It's not just the look (which is ineffably right, from the mutton chops and the peasant dresses to the battered screen doors and the neon glow), it's the feel, the rhythm of hanging out, of talking yourself into a state of shivering ecstasy or fear or something in between. Joaquin Phoenix goes all in as Doc Sportello, the private investigator searching for his ex-girlfriend Shasta (Katherine Waterston), menaced at every turn by the telegenic police detective “Bigfoot” Bjornsen (Josh Brolin). Among the other members of Anderson's mind-boggling cast are Reese Witherspoon, Benicio Del Toro, Martin Short, Owen Wilson, and Jena Malone.

This week on The Video Store Podcast, I'm recommending four films that are all about films and filmmaking in one way or another. Some are about the industry. Some about obsession with its product. All are worth watching. The Stunt Man (1980) – Directed by Richard Rush. This film took nearly a decade to get made. It's about a fugitive who ends up working as a stuntman on a chaotic film set. Peter O'Toole plays the eccentric director. The film is known for how it blurs the line between what's real and what's staged, both for the characters and the viewer. Rush was nominated for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. Steve Railsback, who plays the lead, had previously portrayed Charles Manson in Helter Skelter, and that performance had followed him around.Fade to Black (1980) – A psychological thriller directed by Vernon Zimmerman. Not so much about the industry behind-the scenes, but instead about its effect on the other side of the camera. Dennis Christopher plays a movie-obsessed loner who starts acting out scenes from classic films in real life. A lot of people missed this when it came out, but it has a cult following now. It's set in Los Angeles and uses that setting in a way that feels grimy and off. Mickey Rourke appears in a small early role. Quentin Tarantino has mentioned this film as an influence. The Big Picture (1989) – A comedy directed by Christopher Guest. Kevin Bacon plays a young filmmaker who finds early success, then quickly loses control of his career. Martin Short plays his agent in a way that's deliberately over-the-top. The script was co-written by Michael McKean and also includes appearances by John Cleese and Teri Hatcher. It's one of those movies that shows how studio notes and industry pressure can take a decent idea and ruin it.Living in Oblivion (1995) – Directed by Tom DiCillo whose name I butcher, my apologies. This one's about a small indie film production falling apart. Steve Buscemi plays the director. It's shot in black and white and color, dividing dream sequences from the rest. Catherine Keener and Dermot Mulroney are also in it. DiCillo based a lot of the script on his own frustrations making his first feature. James Le Gros plays a difficult actor who many assumed was based on Brad Pitt, who had worked with DiCillo before. DiCillo has denied it, but the rumor stuck. Also a great role from a future Game of Thrones star. Each of these films looks at films and filmmaking from a different angle. They're also all lesser-known films, some not widely seen, but worth your time. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work. Kevin Nash has a lot on his mind this week, and it goes far beyond the Knicks. From getting high before a back workout to debating the collapse of American politics, this episode moves fast and hits hard. Expect tangents, truths, and a few curveballs only Big Sexy could throw. There's a new movie in the pipeline, a Martin Short story that involves a robe, and some choice words about the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Nash shares a few memories from the road, reflects on his singing skills, and maybe overshares about what it's like to receive Uber Eats in nothing but a talk show gift. The conversation turns serious as Kevin and Sean tackle issues like autism, dyslexia, and how the education system fails kids who don't fit the mold. They also respond to a heartfelt message from a listener whose son with autism is a big fan of the show. It's one of the most personal segments they've done in a while. Later, they go deep into testosterone replacement therapy, longevity doctors, and what it means to stay sharp, healthy, and functional into your sixties. If you've ever wondered what it's like to navigate aging while still grinding, this is a window into the mindset. And yes, the NBA comes up. Knicks, Pacers, Vegas odds, and the unspoken truth about who the networks actually want in the Finals. It's a mix of hoops and hustle, politics and pop culture, heart and heat. "Comedy writers learn early on that we have a high degree of anonymity," writes podcast guest Alan Zweibel in his memoir Laugh Lines: My Life Helping Funny People Be Funnier. "Our words are spoken publicly by others who often have famous faces. Or by unknown people on their way to having famous faces." As one of the founding writers on Saturday Night Live, Alan's words were given voice by a cast of virtual unknowns, all on their way to becoming famous faces, eventually earning worldwide acclaim as some of the most iconic comic performers of their generation. Over the course of his 50-year career, he has penned jokes for dozens of Borscht Belt comedians and written for some of SNL's most memorable characters (such as Gilda Radner's "Roseanne Rosannadanna," John Belushi's "Samurai," and Garrett Morris's "Chico Escuela"), and helped to craft SNL producer Lorne Michaels's now-legendary appeal to invite the Beatles to appear on the show for the standard artist fee of $3,000.  Alan is the recipient of five Emmy Awards for his work in television, which in addition to SNL also includes "It's Garry Shandling's Show" (which he co-created and produced), "The Late Show with David Letterman," and "Curb Your Enthusiasm." He is the author of 11 books, including the 2006 Thurber Prize-winning novel The Other Shulman, and Bunny Bunny: Gilda Radner—A Sort of Romantic Comedy, and six off-Broadway plays. He also collaborated with Billy Crystal on the Tony Award-winning play "700 Sundays," and with Martin Short on his Broadway hit "Fame Becomes Me," and co-wrote the screenplays for the films "Dragnet," "North," "The Story of Us," and "Here Today." He joins us on the podcast to reflect on a singular career as one of our leading comedy writers and humorists—and a wickedly funny body of work that has earned him an honorary Ph.D. from the State University of New York, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Writers Guild of America, East.  Learn more about Alan Zweibel: Website Facebook Instagram Bluesky Please support the sponsors who support our show: John Kasich's Heaven Help Us (now available for pre-order) Ritani Jewelers Daniel Paisner's Balloon Dog Daniel Paisner's SHOW: The Making and Unmaking of a Network Television Pilot Heaven Help Us by John Kasich Unforgiving: Lessons from the Fall by Lindsey Jacobellis Film Movement Plus (PODCAST) | 30% discount Libro.fm (ASTOLDTO) | 2 audiobooks for the price of 1 when you start your membership Film Freaks Forever! podcast, hosted by Mark Jordan Legan and Phoef Sutton Everyday Shakespeare podcast A Mighty Blaze podcast The Writer's Bone Podcast Network Misfits Market (WRITERSBONE) | $15 off your first order  Film Movement Plus (PODCAST) | 30% discount Wizard Pins (WRITERSBONE) | 20% discount

Achoo! We're falling in love with the one and only Faith Prince. You Might Know Her From Modern Family, Emily in Paris, Melissa & Joey, Spin City, My Father the Hero, The Last Dragon, and Broadway productions of Guys & Dolls, A Catered Affair, Bells Are Ringing, and BOOP!  Faith talked to us about grounding her character, Valentina, in the cartoonish plot of BOOP!, coping with fame during her star-making turn in Guys & Dolls, and leaning on her co-star Gerard Depardieu in one of her first leading roles on camera in My Father the Hero.  Faith also shared stories from working as a Broadway replacement in the cumbersome costume of Ursula in The Little Mermaid and the notoriously “realistic” production of Anne as Miss Hannigan. All that, plus working with theatre legends like Jerome Robbins, Abe Burrows, Betty Comden & Adolph Green, doing dialect work at Joey Lawrence and Lily Collins, doing her best Cyndi Lauper in cult fave The Last Dragon (and making pals with Berry Gordy, and working with Jean Smart and Mary McDonnell in the short-lived High Society.   This one was a HOOT.  Patreon: www.patreon.com/youmightknowherfrom Follow us on social media: @youmightknowherfrom || @damianbellino || @rodemanne Discussed this episode: Evergreen topics for Anne and Damian: Tyne Daly in Gypsy, Grease, Spice Girls track listings, we look like cats in Heathcliff, the cast of Mannequin 2 aka is it Jonathan Silverman, no it's William Ragsdale in Herman's Head, Sex and the City/AJLT Cynthia Nixon's kitchen tour Tom and Lorenzo and their SJP adventure Plays Valentina in Boop on Broadway We love Dancer/Choreographer Rachelle Rak Coughing as Adelaide was tougher than talking and singing in character voice Bob Saget used his stand-up to differentiate himself from Danny Tanner  Nathan & Adelaide are famously the SOUBRETTES in Guys & Dolls so Jerry Zaks put them forward instead of Sky and Sarah (this changed how future productions positioned the 2 couples)  Jerry Mitchell says it's important to pass the baton down to the next generation of musical theatre stars Arthur Laurents aka “the meanest man in show-business”, Jerry Gutierrez, Abe Burrows, Comden & Green, Sondheim, Barishnykov, Howard Ashman, Jack Plotnick, Tina Landau,  My Father the Hero w/ Gerard Depardieu “Dirty Books” from The Last Dragon / Suzanne de Passe and Berry Gordy produced the soundtrack. Berry Gordy took her OUT and called her “baby” “One More Time” in First Wives Club “How do you know if someone has lived through trauma — by the way they get someone who doesn't like them, to like them.” Cole Escola of Oh, Mary! on CBS Sunday Morning Was in first 6 episodes of High Society with Jean Smart and Mary McDonnell (based on AbFab and Faith played the Saffy character) Faith Prince's “Men” from Nick & Nora. The show was a notorious flop. Arthur told Faith she was making a big mistake by leaving show to do Guys & Dolls. Mary Rodgers told her she could find a way into Anna through Gertrude Lawrence, who was a comedienne.  Was offered the role of Audrey in the original Off-Broadway production of Little Shop of Horrors Went to CCM with Jim Walton Had taken the revue, Scrambled Feet and was doing an IBM industrial so couldn't' take LSOH Lance Roberts is currently in Just in Time Ellen Greene did Adelaide at The Hollywood Bowl  Studied Donna Murphy who she replaced in The King & I and then did Wonderful Town (at LA Opera) Katie Finneran talked with us about James Lapine's realistic interpretation of Annie and Miss Hannigan in the 2012 revival. Said it was a challenge in the NYT. Re the 2012 revival of Annie: Andrea McArdle said “I didn't know we were doing Secret Garden” Associate Director Wes Grantham LOVES HUMOR, unlike Lapine Martin Charnin & Charles Strouse KISSED HER FEET when they visited her backstage John Doyle who directed A Catered Affair also backs away from the humor We love Bells are Ringing - Faith starred in the 2001 Broadway revival. Long before 'Waiting For Guffman', Christopher Guest directed 'The Big Picture', a heartfelt, hilariously incisive movie about making movies. The film was greenlit during British film executive David Puttnam's brief tenure running Columbia Pictures.  Co-written by Guest's 'Spinal Tap' co-star Michael McKean, who also turns in an unexpectedly warm and heartfelt performance, 'The Big Picture' is worthy of rediscovery for its impressively spot-on send-up of both Los Angeles and the studio executives who populate the business. The film stars Kevin Bacon, McKean, J.T. Walsh, Emily Longstreth, an uncredited Martin Short, Fran Drescher, Jennifer Jason Leigh.   You can watch the film here. The Canadian city is a hotbed of future comedy icons like Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, and Gilda Radner. And Martin fits right in. It starts with a production of “Godspell,” and Martin never looks back. It takes him to stardom on TV, stage, and the big screen. The Not Ready for Prime Time Podcast: The Early Years of SNL

We revisit the “Dick Ebersol era” of SNL once again with our guest, Kevin Kelton. He is an Emmy-nominated writer for his work on Saturday Night Live, writing on the show for Seasons 9 & 10, before moving on to a very successful career writing and producing sitcoms.Fun Fact: Kevin is also part of a very exclusive group of only four people who wrote for both SNL AND Friday's. Kevin joins us to talk about his journey working for two of the most famous sketch comedy shows of all time, writing sketches for established characters for the likes of Eddie Murphy and Martin Short, as well as writing some of the era's most memorable pieces for Jim Belushi. He discusses the shift in the show's atmosphere with the arrival of the S10 “all-stars,” shares tales of sketches that never made it to air, and defends the importance of Dick Ebersol to the show's survival  And, Kevin recounts his story of being one of the only people asked to come back to the show after Lorne Michael's return for S11.---------------------------------Subscribe today!Follow us on social media: X (Twitter): NR4PTProjectBluesky: nr4ptproject.bsky.socialInstagram: nr4ptprojectFacebook: The Not Ready for Prime Time ProjectContact Us: Website: https://www.nr4project.comEmail: nr4ptproject@gmail.com
