I'm going to be real with you—sometimes the biggest business breakthroughs don't happen on stage, in a meeting, or during a strategy session. They happen when your feelings get hurt, your plans go sideways, and you say “yes” anyway. In this episode, I'm sharing the behind-the-scenes story of how a last-minute trip to Nashville turned into one of the most impactful mastermind experiences of my year—all because I chose to show up, even when I felt excluded. Here's the tea: I wasn't invited to a mastermind dinner I thought I'd be part of. And, like any human with a beating heart, I had a lot of feelings. I let myself sit in them. I reached out to my girl Amy Porterfield. And instead of letting the exclusion define me, I made a new story—and booked a plane ticket.Spoiler: That trip led to a powerful mini mastermind with some of the most brilliant female entrepreneurs I know (Jenna Kutcher, Bonnie Christine, and more), and I walked away 1% better—and with 5 key takeaways you can apply to your business today. Here's what you'll learn:Why rest is just as productive as hustleHow to reframe moments of rejectionWhat “choosing a better story” looks like in actionThe power of informal opportunitiesHow to squeeze value out of every experience (even the ones that don't go as planned)Whether you're navigating disappointment or wondering if it's worth hopping on a plane last-minute, I hope this episode encourages you to trust the process and say yes to what could be next.Because the truth is, the right rooms won't just open for you—they'll find you when you're ready.Click play to hear all of this and:[00:54] Why Rejection Hurt: Unpacking a Business Exclusion[02:44] Choose a Better Story: How I Reframed the Narrative[03:42] How Vulnerability Sparked a New Opportunity[04:32] The 1% Rule: Why Small Gains Lead to Big Growth[05:28] 32 Hours in Nashville: High-Energy Learning & Connections[08:04] Informal Masterminds Matter: What This Trip Taught Me[10:22] Why Being Present (Even When Disappointed) Still Pays OffListen to Related Episodes:Three Ways to Remove Comparison and Become UnstoppableBuilding Confidence with Ease: How I'm Becoming the 3X Version of Myself

We talk about the fear of quitting, the mental weight of dragging something behind you, and how releasing what no longer fits can make space for what's next (sometimes sooner than you think!)As creative entrepreneurs, our interests shift. What lights us up in one season might feel heavy or out of sync in another. That's not failure - it's growth. This week on the Artist Academy Podcast is a replay episode featuring Cleveland, Ohio-based muralist Lisa Quine. I really enjoyed my chat with Lisa. She has this positive, honest energy that comes from someone who's just come out of the thick of building her business—having figured out so much already, while still growing and evolving. We talked about her unique pricing strategy and how it became her standard approach after years of experience. We even unexpectedly got into the topic of juggling work with new motherhood—a recent favorite of mine—when I realized she was expecting a baby at the time. I hope you enjoy this replay episode with Lisa Quine!

We begin with something I had no clue about and we're curious if you knew.   Last night was the biggest night of the year for birds migrating over Kansas and Missouri and the number will shock you!    A trip to the waiting parking lot to pick up my wife yesterday at KCI left me feeling uneasy about our airport.      That lottery winner that got arrested in Florida gets another plot twist as he violated his parole... and... wait for it: His girlfriend got into a fight too.  This just gets stranger.    Trump's scoring one win after another and announces he's building a fancy ballroom at the White House.  Don't worry... he's paying for it.  I think I know why.    The Royals toss their 5th shutout in the last 10 games... pretty hard to lose when the other guys don't score.  They also did something really nice before the game.    Bill Self has an opportunity to change a few things this year with one hire and a pitcher at Kauffman Stadium last night has an amazing story to find his way to the mound.

Just 5 years ago, Oklahoma State University and the Cherokee Nation launched a first-of-its-kind medical school.  The College of Osteopathic Medicine at the Cherokee Nation is the first and only medical college to be founded on tribal land and linked to a native tribe. The school made history when its first graduating class of doctors received their degrees in May 2024.  Drs. Natasha Bray and Douglas Nolan are the Dean and Associate Dean of the school. They join us from Tahlequah, Oklahoma, where they are helping a new generation of doctors learn to provide critical care — especially in rural and tribal areas, which are facing a dire shortage of doctors.  During the show you'll also hear from Megan Tramel. She's a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and a student at the College of Osteopathic Medicine in Tahlequah. This month, in May 2025, she'll receive her degree and start the next phase of her journey as a doctor.  We invite you to share your feedback about this show with us on social media. Welcome to another empowering episode of the Women in Leadership Podcast! I'm Annemarie Cross, and today, I'm joined by an extraordinary leader who knows firsthand what it takes to take charge of your career and step into your full potential - Dr. Karen Hills Pruden. In today's episode, she's sharing the exact strategies that helped her stop waiting for promotions, stop settling for limitations, and start creating her own opportunities. And if you're feeling stuck or uncertain about your next career move, don't worry - Dr. Karen is bringing her signature frameworks designed to help businesses and individuals stay competitive, resilient, and ready to navigate any challenge. Get ready to shift your mindset and embrace the leader within you! Here are the key takeaways: Become the Pilot of Your Career: Dr. Karen shared her own experience of waiting for a promised promotion that didn't materialize. Her takeaway? Don't just be the copilot. Take charge and actively manage your career. Step up and have those crucial conversations. Visibility Creates Opportunity: Want to grow professionally or get that next promotion? Volunteer for projects and committees. This gives you the chance to showcase your skills and get noticed by key decision-makers, opening doors you may not have even considered. Overqualification Is a Myth: Dr. Karen stresses that being overqualified should not be a deterrent. Instead, view it as added value. Employers should see it as a bonus of experience and skill that can bring immediate benefits. CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION:   Continue the conversation about this podcast episode over on our Community! It's one of my three-day events that I'm running, and as I always do, I have everyone gather in a circle one at a time, I have everyone say their name and say one fun fact that would not be on their bio, so we go around, and person after person is introducing themselves, and we get to the last person who says, “Hi. I'm Sandy Zabarsky, and I just got out of prison.” The whole room goes silent and you can honestly hear a pin drop. Everyone's eyes are just on her, and for a split second, you can almost feel their assumptions kicking in. Like, what does she mean? Is she really just out of prison? Did I even hear that right? Then, she continues and says, “I've been an educator for most of my career. I work in the juvenile justice system, and I recently retired, so yes, I have just gotten out of prison, so to speak, and I spent my entire career there.” In that moment, the meaning of her words completely changed. The whole room, the feeling of the room, changes because what she says, it makes her work relevant and completely has a plot twist in the middle of this exercise because what mattered to her more than anything else is that it wasn't only about working in prison, but for her, it was helping the kids get their GEDs. That was really important because she knew that a piece of paper could mean the difference between them having a completely different life story and repeating the same pattern. Sandy Zabarsky, also known as my mom, helped me in many, many, many events throughout my career, helping us really look at storytelling in a different way. She helped me realize that storytelling isn't just about entertainment or something to read as a book here or a movie there. Instead, storytelling is about how we shape reality, and that's exactly what my guest today does. Professor Dr. Ger Graus OBE is a globally recognized education leader, known for his innovative approach to children's learning. Having held key roles at KidZania and the Children's University, he serves as a professor and advisor to various global education organizations, and has received numerous accolades, and he understands today's aspect of storytelling better than most people. You'll get answers to questions like: Why is storytelling so important in education? How does it impact learning? What are some hidden narratives in education that actually shape decisions and opportunities? How could storytelling be integrated into school curriculums? What benefits would it offer students? What common misconceptions exist about new technology in education? How can we change our mindset to embrace change instead of resisting it? What you will learn (about) in this episode: The power of perspective in storytelling and how a dramatic introduction can immediately shift perceptions How stories make learning more meaningful than rote memorization The value of personal narratives and how everyone, younger and older, has valuable stories to share How many people believe their stories aren't "big" enough but that storytelling is about connection and expression Finding humor and humanity in stories and how storytelling helps us process emotions and connect with others Who is Ger? Professor Dr. Ger Graus OBE is a globally recognized leader in education, known for his unique and innovative approach to children's learning. He was the first Global Director of Education at KidZania and the founding C.E.O. of the Children's University, advocating for equity, creativity, and progress in education. He currently serves as a Visiting Professor at the National Research University in Moscow, a Professor of Practice at the University of Cumbria, and a PhD Advisory Council member at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. He holds advisory roles with various global education organizations, including Bett's Global Education Council and Dubai Future Councils, and he has received multiple accolades, including an OBE in 2014 and the Global Education Leadership Award in 2018. His professional autobiography, Through a Different Lens: Lessons from a Life in Education, is set for publication in 2025 via Routledge.
