It is billed as “the world's longest and toughest snowmachine race”. Next year, the Iron Dog Race plans to add three checkpoints to its over 2,000-mile course. As KOTZ's Desiree Hagen reports, a new race route, announced earlier this month, has been several years in the making and crosses through two national wildlife refuges. The new route adds the communities of Huslia, Shungnak, and Ambler. Rick Paquette is the executive director of the Iron Dog. He says it will not add miles, but would traverse through new terrain. He says the race has been working on permitting for the route for a while. “This isn’t something like overnight that happened, you know what I mean. This was over seven years in the making, this is a really big deal, and we’re super excited to do this.” Why did it take so long? The proposed race route passes through federally protected land, more than 100 miles of it (79 miles on Koukuk, 34 miles on Selawik) through the Koyukuk and Selawik National Wildlife Refuges. Both refuges rejected the initial request, citing similar reasons: the race would be a public safety problem, require more budget and staff than available, and not align with the refuges' purpose or mission. A letter from Selawik Wildlife Refuge said that a portion of the proposed route would also violate the Wilderness Act and the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act (ANILCA) through 1.3 miles of trail. The managers of the refuges were unavailable for comment. Iron Dog also submitted a special use permit through Kobuk Valley National Park, but changed their race route to a section of the Kobuk River that does not fall under park service authority, according to a representative from the Western Arctic Parklands. Race organizers appealed the rejections in June 2025 and reached out to the office of U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-AK). A press release from the senator said he and his team played a “key role” in advancing the new route and drafted an appeal that “highlighted inconsistencies” preventing the route's expansion. “Obviously anytime you have a bunch of different organizations that you’re trying to collaborate with and get one final answer on, it’s extremely difficult. I think, new administrations, and definitely, Sen. Sullivan’s office really helped push this over and help us get to the goal line on this.” Paquette says Sullivan's office helped with letters of support, and with multiple organizations, including the Bureau of Land Management. And it paid off. In December, Sara Boario, Regional Director of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, overturned the previous denials, allowing for the new race routes. Boario's office did not respond to questions from KOTZ news. Paquette says there are challenges with a race this large, which passes through 23 mostly remote checkpoints. “It’s a beast to put on this race logistically, and there’s always struggles with fuel and getting equipment out, and getting, you know, resources out there.” Both Ambler and Shungnak have experienced prolonged fuel shortages in the last several years, often in winter when storms can ground fuel planes. Still, Paquette says Iron Dog is prepared for those challenges. “We do our best to make sure we get all the resources for the communities that we need to put a strong race.” Paquette says Iron Dog has several programs that the new race communities will benefit from, including free helmets and free life jackets for local youth. Last year, Iron Dog established the Iron Pup program, which fosters young racers. Iron Dog also founded the Make it Run program that partners with schools and engineers to encourage technical and mechanical training. Paquette says there is also economic benefits to the new communities. “There’s gonna be publicity, there’s gonna be people going through these areas, you know. We send resources up there, spending money, and, you know, giving a chance for these folks to see this incredible race.” The Iron Dog race typically begins in early February. A date has not been set for next year’s race. Get National Native News delivered to your inbox daily. Sign up for our daily newsletter today. Hi, friends, and welcome back to our series, "On Becoming: The Art and Craft of Personal Storytelling," where we take a close look at personal essays written by real students, talk about why we love them, what makes them work, and how they came to be. In this episode, I'm joined by Amber Patterson, Regional Director of Admission at Texas Christian University. This conversation does two things at once. We read a real student essay closely, line by line, and we get inside an admission reader's head to understand what's actually landing as she reads through it. We get into: What Amber hopes to learn about a student when she sits down with their personal statement Why TCU has chosen not to use any AI to read applications, and the human moments she says a machine can't pick up How the reading process actually works at TCU  A full breakdown of an essay called "The Silent Assassin," starting with Amber's take on why a clever hook may matter less than students think How to nest a small, everyday challenge inside a larger essay (the hybrid structure), and how a common challenge can be than enough How to subtly weave an extracurricular activity into your essay, and how to actually use the additional information section Amber's honest take on AI for students: where it helps, and where to avoid it Amber Patterson is a first generation, non-traditional college student who earned her Bachelor's degree in Ethnic Studies from Cal State East Bay and a Master of Human Relations degree in Inclusive Leadership from the University of Oklahoma. After a decade as a college counselor in California public high schools, she moved into higher ed and now serves as Regional Director of Admission at Texas Christian University. She has served on WACAC's Executive Board and currently chairs Professional Development for the Regional Admission Counselors of California. What she loves most about this work is helping students find their path to higher education and fostering an environment where every student's unique experiences are valued. I loved this conversation, and Amber's care for students comes through in every answer. I hope you enjoy it too.   Play-by-Play: 2:21 –  What is often happening in admission offices in June? 3:43 – What does Amber look for in a personal statement?  5:05 – What is the application reading process like at TCU and what is the role of the personal statement?  8:59 – What conversations are happening in the TCU admissions office around using AI for application review? 12:56 – What is the human "feeling" a great essay creates, and why is it so hard to teach a machine to find it?  15:34 – Do college essays need titles? 17:10 – Amber reads the essay, which we're calling "The Silent Assassin"  21:40 – Why does a clever hook matter less than students think? 24:42 – How does the author show leadership qualities through the essay?  26:58 – Why is "show, don't tell" an effective storytelling technique for college essays? 31:39 – How can students nest a challenge into the essay without it being the whole story? 36:40 – When should students weave an activity into the personal statement? 39:51 – Where is it best for students to mention their intended major? 41:00 – What can students include in the additional information section?  43:54 – What does the admission reader learn about the student through their proudest moment in high school?  50:01 – How much information might an admission reader catch in a quick read?  51:58 – What advice does Amber have for students around AI use? 54:15 – What does Amber hope that students will keep in mind throughout this process? 55:19 – Closing thoughts  Resources: The "Silent Assassin" Essay Should I Discuss Mental Health in My Personal Statement or College Application? SRD to provide funds for the Cortes Island Food Bank

Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents -  At their May 27 meeting, the Strathcona Regional District Board approved a motion to provide the Cortes Island Food Bank with close to $24,000 for its new outlet in Manson's Landing. Mark Vonesh (Regional Director, Cortes Island): “I'd like to move that a financial contribution of up to $23,425 be approved from the Electoral Area B Community Works Fund to the Cortes Island Food Bank Association to support construction of a food security hub, subject to finalizing a funding agreement between the association and the regional district.” The minutes state that Michael Lott of Gold River seconded the motion, but the voice in the audio sounds more like Robin Mawhinney, Regional Director for Area C. Mark Baker (Chair of the SRD): “Discussion? All in favor. Motion is passed.” The money comes from federal gas tax revenues, which in BC are administered by the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM). A similar motion was turned down on October 2, 2025, because the funds would go to a third party. As Chief Administrative Officer David Leach explained at that time:
“The challenge is, again, these are UBCM resolutions. It's not an SRD asset. So is this a priority within the regional districts? Do you have any other regional deficiencies that you could use this money for yourself? That's the challenge. It qualifies, but it's to a third party.” Some directors were concerned that granting money to a third party could be interpreted as meaning the SRD did not have any applicable projects of its own. The Union of BC Municipalities later advised the SRD that funding for the Cortes Island Food Bank be eligible as cultural infrastructure if it was included in board-approved planning documents. This interpretation is based on the precedent set by communities using gas tax funds to enhance community centers that host programs such as emergency shelters and food services, thereby contributing to food security outcomes. SRD staff responded by incorporating the project into their 2026 to 2031 financial plan. Beatrix Baxter, president of the Cortes Island Food Bank, emailed, "We were thrilled to get the news that our funding request was approved. This was funding we were hoping to get last year as we faced the loss of our former food storage location and needed to make emergency renovations to the shipping containers at the Village Commons. Unfortunately, due to questions about whether a nonprofit can count as a beneficiary of that particular infrastructure funding, we weren't able to access that funding last year. We're so grateful to our regional director and to the SRD board, C-CAO and CFO for their work in negotiating an effective strategy so those funds are available to, so those funds are available to us this year." "We hope other nonprofits on the island will work with the regional director to use this strategy to fund future projects. We're continuing to work on the shipping containers, adding a roof between the structures and improving accessibility. We're excited to show the public everything that we've been working on at our open house later this summer. It's been a huge effort, and we couldn't have done it without the support of the SRD, our regional director, Food Banks Canada, and our amazing local donors who consistently show up to support our work. The need in our community is growing, and we're very glad to be working on eradicating hunger with the support of our local government."

“During the recent conflict [in Iran], there was a pause, not a full stop or halt of the functions. Once the airspace opened up again, we reprioritized the delivery of those life-saving kits to the member states, and we came back on track… We still find hope in the communication between the different member states, between the different partners to secure some of these supplies, or keep supply chains alive.” Daniel Dadzie speaks to Hanan Balkhy, the World Health Organisation's Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, about navigating the challenges posed by recent conflicts in Sudan and Iran. It's one of six regional WHO offices around the world, covering a total population of nearly 745 million people from Morocco in the west to Pakistan in the east, and as far south as Sudan. The WHO works with governments and local authorities to improve access to basic healthcare and provide support during humanitarian emergencies. Global supply chains were severely disrupted when the conflict in Iran began just over two months ago. Although much of the focus of this disruption has been on oil and trade, crucial medical supplies have also been delayed in reaching where they're needed most. In this episode of Home Health Revealed, we sit down with Victoria Barkin, Regional Director of Operations for Home Health at National Church Residences, to talk about what it really means to create a true continuum of care. Too often, care is delivered in silos. But patients don't experience it that way. Victoria shares real-world stories that highlight the gaps that can happen between settings and what it takes operationally and clinically to close them. From navigating complex discharges without an established physician to quickly transitioning a patient to hospice and avoiding an unnecessary hospitalization, this conversation brings the concept of “continuity” to life. We also dig into the role of relationships, both within an organization and across the community, and why having the right connections in place can make all the difference for patients and their caregivers. Whether your organization offers a full continuum of services or relies on trusted partners, this episode explores how home health leaders can better support patients through every stage of care. Most people buying "clean" supplements are unknowingly loading their bodies with heavy metals, rancid fish oil, and glyphosate, even inside products labeled organic and healthy. This episode breaks down exactly what the supplement industry refuses to tell you and gives you the tools to stop poisoning yourself every morning. -Watch this episode on YouTube for the full video experience: https://www.youtube.com/@DaveAspreyBPR -Grab a discount on Puori Products by visiting: https://puori.com/pages/dave?dt_id=1750934 Host Dave Asprey sits down with Oliver Amdrup-Chamby, founder and CEO of PUORI and a serial entrepreneur in the health and wellness space with over 16 years building what has become one of the most rigorously tested supplement brands in the world. Oliver opened the first CrossFit gym in Denmark in 2006, served as Regional Director of CrossFit HQ across Europe and the Middle East, holds an Executive Program credential from Stanford, and advises longevity projects including One Thirty Labs in Copenhagen. He founded PUORI in 2009 with a single obsession: creating the cleanest third-party tested fish oil on the market. That obsession grew into a full supplement line built on batch testing every finished consumer product for environmental toxins, a standard the industry has yet to catch up to. Together, Dave and Oliver expose the hidden contamination crisis inside the supplement industry, from oxidized fish oil that creates inflammation instead of fighting it, to plant-based protein powders carrying up to 10 times more heavy metals than whey. They break down why organic does not mean safe, how glyphosate embeds itself directly into your collagen infrastructure and disrupts the body's ability to build healthy connective tissue, and why the omega 3 index is one of the most powerful and measurable longevity biomarkers you are probably ignoring. They also dig into the surprising brain optimization and anti-aging benefits of creatine, including new research on concussion recovery and sleep deprivation, and how foundational supplements like vitamin D, magnesium, and high-quality fish oil remain the non-negotiables that no nootropic stack can replace. You'll Learn: Why organic protein powder often contains more heavy metals than non-organic options How glyphosate infiltrates collagen and gets rebuilt into your body's own tissue What the omega 3 index is, why most Americans are dangerously low, and how raising it correlates with years of additional longevity Why plant-based omega 3s fail to convert to DHA and what to take instead How oxidized fish oil creates inflammation rather than reducing it, and what to look for on the label Why vitamin D deficiency persists even with regular sun exposure and how genetics affect your required dose The creatine research that has longevity doctors and neuroscientists paying attention for the first time How foundational supplements support mitochondria, metabolism, and long-term resilience in ways that trendy biohacking stacks cannot replicate What to look for in a clean supplement brand and why third-party batch testing of finished goods is the only standard that matters Thank you to our sponsors! Dave Asprey is a four-time New York Times bestselling author, founder of Bulletproof Coffee, and the father of biohacking. With over 1,000 interviews and 1 million monthly listeners, The Human Upgrade brings you the knowledge to take control of your biology, extend your longevity, and optimize every system in your body and mind. Riad Kassis joins Mark Labberton from Beirut as airstrikes continue, 700,000 people have been displaced across Lebanon, and children's toys are visible in the rubble. He leads Langham Partnership and has spent decades serving the church across one of the world's most contested regions. He names the spiritual danger of sanctifying power with religious narrative while insisting peace cannot be forced by violence. "Peace does not come by power. It comes by genuine love and concern. It comes when you invest in the education of new generations." In this episode, Kassis reflects on war, displacement, pastoral witness, and hope in God's sovereignty from the middle of Lebanon's crisis. Together they discuss the civilian toll of the war, how religious fundamentalism operates across traditions, the Psalms and Habakkuk as tools for lament, and what American Christians can actually do. Together they ask what it means for the church to hold protest and hope together when cycles of war feel endless and religiously justified. Episode Highlights "It is not an operation. It is a war on Lebanon." "When power—whether political, military, financial, or technological—is sanctified by religious narratives that justify everything, that is what really bothers me." "No one cures and destroys with more passion than someone who believes that God is on their side." "When I think that these 85 children were killed mainly by American ammunition and weapons, I cannot comprehend this—even as a Christian and as a theologian." "Peace does not come by power. It comes by genuine love and concern. It comes when you invest in the education of new generations." About Riad Kassis Riad Kassis is a Langham Scholar from Lebanon and is deeply committed to global theological education.
