IdeasLab, University of Galway's hub for innovation and entrepreneurship, has celebrated student entrepreneurs and innovators at the 2025 Start100 programme. Now in its fourth year, the six-week incubator brings in partners from the world of business and enterprise to support students and student teams as they develop early-stage business ideas. The programme culminated in a Demo Day, where the students pitched their ideas to a panel of expert judges and an audience of peers, mentors and leaders in enterprise. Sean Allen, from Four Mile House, Co Roscommon, showcased his concept - LeukoCheck - an early-stage idea for a continuous blood monitoring system designed to support ICU patients. It explores how real-time biomarker analysis might enable earlier detection of sepsis and, in time, contribute to improved patient outcomes. He was inspired by his family's personal experience of undetected sepsis. Sean Allen was recently awarded the Séamus McDermott Entrepreneurial Scholarship, sponsored by The Liffey Trust, in partnership with IdeasLab at University of Galway. The 'One to Watch' award, sponsored by WestBIC, was presented to Joseph Tannian, a PhD student in the University's College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. The award recognises the potential of his concept - DuaLine - which aims to reimagine diabetes care. Building on scientific advances that have extended the lifespan of implants from just three to four days to up to eight weeks, DuaLine seeks to explore how these breakthroughs could be translated into real-world impact through the design of a compact, next-generation pump. Professor Peter McHugh, Interim President of University of Galway, said: "Congratulations to both of our innovative students on receiving their Start100 2025 awards by demonstrating such exceptional ideas and entrepreneurial talent. Our students are not just preparing for the future - they are helping to shape it. Start100 is a powerful expression of University of Galway's commitment to innovation with impact. Through IdeasLab, we foster creativity, collaboration and the confidence to tackle complex challenges. In a rapidly changing world, this kind of applied, values-driven learning is essential - not just for our students, but for the future of our society and economy." Méabh Conaghan, Regional Director for the West and North-West Regions, Enterprise Ireland, said: "The Start100 series of incubation supports are to be commended as they help students to explore, develop and validate their ideas in a structured and safe environment. Enterprise Ireland is delighted to collaborate with University of Galway and its IdeasLab team on Start100 2025. "It is a privilege to preview the project ideas, and I am excited to say that there are some strong business prospects in the mix. Enterprise Ireland welcomes the Start100 initiative, recognising it as an avenue for future enterprise success and is happy to support this worthwhile programme. Supports that encourage and develop student entrepreneurship at all levels are crucial to a vibrant start-up ecosystem." Start100 is designed to nurture creativity, confidence and entrepreneurial thinking through a blend of mentorship, skills-building workshops and real-world exposure. This year's students explored diverse opportunities and challenges across sectors such as health innovation, education, accessibility, AI, and creative technologies. Each team worked closely with a mentor from their field, while expert-led sessions focused on market validation, storytelling, tax, intellectual property and pitch delivery. Students were also hosted by CREW and Platform94, strengthening their understanding of the regional innovation ecosystem. Guest speakers included leaders from Enterprise Ireland, WestBIC, and the Local Enterprise Office (LEO), the award-winning SymPhysis Medical and Start100 alumni Sam O'Neill from Rowteic. Have you ever had a work situation that took you to your knees and required your faith that everything was going to be okay? I have. In one of my roles, my boss told me that I wasn't the right fit for the role and that I was going on the dreaded performance improvement plan or PIP for short. I was typically the person that was helping others improve their performance, not the employee that was told my performance wasn't measuring up to expectations. When my boss provided me that news, I felt like I left my body. I immediately felt fear. Questions like, “Am I going to be fired?” or “What do I do next if this doesn't work out?” started swirling over my head like storm clouds. The next year was a mad scramble to try to fit in the mold of what my boss wanted me to be while simultaneously looking for a better cultural fit in a new job. That time was fraught with fear and overworking. I didn't even see another choice – that I could have softened into surrender. My guest today, Dr. Shawnte Elbert, has faced her fair share of career struggles, but unlike my position of overdriving, Shawnte learned a concept that I love: inhale faith, exhale fear. In today's podcast, Shawnte gives me a beautiful masterclass in letting go of the need to control and leaning on something much greater: our faith. Before we get started, let me share more about Shawnte:Dr. Shawnté Elbert, EdD, MCHES, CWHC, is the founder and CEO of Elbert Innovative Dr. Shawnté Elbert is a nationally recognized leader in public health, health equity, and mental healthcare innovation. "From the Frontlines" is an ADL podcast which brings listeners to the frontline in the battle against antisemitism and hate. Right now, that frontline is a dangerous one for Jewish communities. Two weeks ago, in Boulder, Colorado, fifteen people were injured, including an 88-year-old Holocaust survivor, and the attacker had 16 more Molotov cocktails ready to throw. The perpetrator spent a year planning to target peaceful Jewish community members showing solidarity with Israeli hostages. This is the second violent attack on the U.S. Jewish community in just two weeks, and it follows closely on the heels of the torching of Governor Shapiro's home in Pennsylvania during Passover because of his support for Israel. Since January 2020, ADL's Center on Extremism has documented 16 terrorist plots or attacks targeting Jews, with nine of those incidents occurring within just the past 12 months. We are living through what we can only describe as an unprecedentedly high threat environment. Susan Rona joined the podcast to discuss this attack and offer an insider look at what happened that day and what has been the aftermath. She is the Regional Director of ADL's Mountain States Region based in Colorado and has been on the ground responding to this attack and supporting the affected community. Susan has been working around the clock with law enforcement, community leaders, and the victims in the aftermath of what the FBI is calling a targeted act of terrorism This podcast was recorded on June 13, 2025.

Dr. Pierre Berastaín, Regional Director at the Centre for Public Impact, invites us into a powerful conversation about leadership, cultural humility, and living with integrity across lines of difference. With warmth and depth, Dr. Berastaín shares how personal identity can be a source of strength in leadership—not something to minimize or check at the door."We all lead from a cultural lens, whether we name it or not," Dr. Berastaín explains. "The danger isn't bringing your culture into leadership—the danger is bringing it in unconsciously and expecting it to be the norm for everyone."Dr. Berastaín's personal journey fuels his systems change work. His role at CPI—a nonprofit incubated by Boston Consulting Group—blends macro strategy with community-rooted implementation. The goal: reimagine how governments and public institutions serve people, especially those pushed to the margins. At the heart of this discussion is an honest reckoning with cultural difference and a plea to bring one's full self into leadership. “Cultural humility isn't about shrinking yourself,” he shares. “It's about knowing yourself well enough to make room for others.”The conversation explores what it means to acknowledge culture without stereotyping, the impact of asking, “What are you?” and how silence—intended to be safe—can sometimes feel like erasure. Dr. Berastaín advocates for “relational warmth before analytical interest,” encouraging listeners to shift from tokenizing curiosity to reciprocal connection. He also offers practical tools for introspection: therapy, spiritual grounding, and forming a “personal board of directors” who challenge and support growth. These elements, he says, are vital in cultivating not only emotional intelligence but the capacity to lead with vision.By the end of the chat, with host Julia Patrick, it's clear that Dr. Berastaín's leadership is not performative—it is personal, deliberate, and anchored in truth. And he challenges all of us to ask: What are we carrying into the room? This episode is a must-watch for nonprofit professionals, board leaders, and changemakers looking to lead with depth and humanity in today's increasingly complex world.00:00:00 Guest intro: Dr. Pierre Berastaín00:01:30 What is the Center for Public Impact?00:03:45 Pierre's story: identity, ancestry, and lived experience00:05:15 From direct service to systems change00:07:00 Cultural humility and leadership lens00:09:20 The beauty and burden of collectivist values00:11:00 Personal growth through therapy and accountability00:13:30 Aligning personal and organizational values00:16:00 When to acknowledge cultural differences00:18:00 The problem with silent observation00:20:00 “What are you?”—Responding to coded curiosity00:25:00 Stories, lineage, and reclaiming culture00:27:45 Wrapping up: Leadership with integrityFind us Live daily on YouTube!Find us Live daily on LinkedIn!Find us Live daily on X: @Nonprofit_ShowOur national co-hosts and amazing guests discuss management, money and missions of nonprofits! 12:30pm ET 11:30am CT 10:30am MT 9:30am PTSend us your ideas for Show Guests or Topics: HelpDesk@AmericanNonprofitAcademy.comVisit us on the web:The Nonprofit Show
