The Diplomacy of Détente: Cooperative Security Policies from Helmut Schmidt to George Shultz (Routledge, 2020) investigates the underlying reasons for the longevity of détente and its impact on East–West relations. The volume examines the relevance of trade across the Iron Curtain as a means to facilitate mutual trust, as well as the emergence of new habits of transparency regardless of recurring military crises. A major theme of the book concerns Helmut Schmidt's foreign policy and his contribution to the resilience of cooperative security policies in East–West relations. It examines Schmidt's crucial role in the Euromissile crisis, his Ostpolitik diplomacy and his pan-European trade initiatives to engage the Soviet Union in a joint perspective of trade, industry and technology. Another key theme concerns the crisis in US–Soviet relations and the challenges of meaningful leadership communication between Washington and Moscow in the absence of backchannel diplomacy during the Carter years. The book depicts the freeze in US–Soviet relations after the Soviet invasion in Afghanistan, the declaration of martial law in Poland, and Helmut Schmidt's efforts to serve as a mediator and interpreter working for a relaunch of US–Soviet dialogue. Eventually, the book highlights George Shultz's pivotal role in the Reagan Administration's efforts to improve US-Soviet relations, well before Mikhail Gorbachev's arrival. This book will be of interest to students of Cold War studies, diplomatic history, foreign policy and international relations. Learn more about your ad choices. Baroness Catherine Ashton, formerly the European Union's lead for foreign and security strategy, discusses challenges, opportunities and tips for collaborative strategy-making. As the EU's first High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Baroness Ashton was at the heart of international strategy making between 2009 and 2014 working on some of the world's most intractable problems. She was appointed by the UN Security Council to lead the P5+1 negotiations for a nuclear deal with Iran and was in post when Russia first invaded Ukraine, seizing Crimea and parts of the Donbas in 2014. She also led peace negotiations in the Western Balkans between Serbia and Kosovo, for which she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. In this episode, she reflects on strategy-making in an international and supranational context, the challenges facing Europe today and how ‘false binaries' – such as those that posit the EU and NATO as being in opposition – stifle effective strategy elaboration. She argues that strategy makers need preparedness of thought and action, the ability to ground their ambition both in reality but also in individual and organisational values, as well as the will to ask, and respond to, the key question of any adaptive strategy, ‘And then what?'. In an illustrious career, The Rt Hon The Baroness Catherine Ashton of Upholland LG GCMG PC was a minister, Leader of the House of Lords, the UK's first female Commissioner in the European Union and the High Representative and First Vice President for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy in the Barroso Commission establishing the European External Action Service as a major actor in international affairs.

In the 119th Congress, Rep. Mike Bost serves on two other key committees: Transportation & Infrastructure, and Agriculture. The conversation on America's Roundtable covers key topics focusing on addressing pressing policy issues impacting American citizens and the challenges emanating from abroad including the China threat which affects the United States and its allies: — Chairman Mike Bost's leadership role at the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs. — Securing America's borders | Addressing the adverse impact of fentanyl on American lives and deporting illegal immigrants involved in acts of crime and violence. Chairman Bost speaks to sheriffs in the Midwest. — President Donald Trump's economic and security policies — efforts to advance free, fair and reciprocal trade. Chairman Bost provides his insights on the proposed tariffs presented by President Trump. — Chairman Bost re-introduced the Fighting Trade Cheats Act, legislation to hold China and other bad actors accountable for unfair trade practices that destroy American jobs. His bill takes aim at companies dumping foreign-made goods in U.S. markets by allowing U.S. manufacturers to sue foreign producers for customs fraud. The Fighting Trade Cheats Act will provide necessary updates to America's existing trade laws and the penalties in place for violating them. — The 80th anniversary of the end of WWII | Victory in Europe (VE) Day on May 8 and Victory over Japan (VJ) Day on August 15. — The 80th anniversary of the allies' initial crossing of the River Rhine at Remagen, Germany. The crucial role of America's enterprises during WWII in supporting US troops and the inspiring story of Correct Craft in building boats to cross the River Rhine, the last natural barrier to Berlin. This allowed US troops to advance rapidly — breaking open Germany's defenses and hastening the defeat of the Third Reich. National Geographic later dubbed Correct Craft's incredible work as “A Miracle Production.” Chairman Bost introduced legislation to increase access to care for veterans through the Department of Veterans' Affairs (VA) providers in the community. The Veterans' Assuring Critical Care Expansions to Support Service members (ACCESS) Act of 2025 would establish existing community care access standards as the baseline standard of care for veterans seeking care in the community, increase access to life-saving treatment programs for veterans with mental health conditions or addiction and expand the list of criteria VA is required to take into account when determining whether it is in a veteran's best medical interest to refer a veteran to the community to include veteran preference and continuity of care. Brief Bio Rep. Mike Bost is proud to represent the 34 counties of Illinois' 12th District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Sworn into office on January 6, 2015, Mike is continuing the fight for our Southern Illinois' values in Washington – a fight he began in U.S. military, then as a first responder, a local job creator, and a state representative. J. Michael Waller, Senior Analyst for Strategy at the Center for Security Policy, is no desk pilot. He has been on the ground in some of the most intense situations the US was ever involved in, both officially and unofficially, from supporting the contras in Nicaragua to aiding the mujahideen during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. He watched the USSR collapse from the grounds of the Kremlin itself. And he saw for himself the good work that USAID once accomplished as a tool to spread the ideals of liberty and democracy abroad. But once the Cold War ended, the agency quickly devolved into a slush fund for Beltway ideological factions to promote their own agendas instead of the nation's. Now, with the second Trump administration taking a figurative chainsaw to fiscally irresponsible projects, Waller details his dealings with the project and why this austerity policy is necessary to refocus USAID, and the government as a whole, on its proper policy targets.

Even before its rebirth as a nation in the 1990s, Serbia had acquired a reputation abroad as Russia's stalwart Slavic ally in the Western Balkans. Yet, as Vuk Vuksanović argues in Serbia's Balancing Act: Between Russia and the West (Bloomsbury, 2025), two centuries of history and the 25 years since the fall of Slobodan Milošević tell a more nuanced story. "When it comes to Russia's interests,” he writes, “there are no sacred cows in Serbia-Russia relations". Governments in Belgrade will be courted and then discarded depending on Moscow's needs, and they know it. For their part, the Serbs depend on Russian political support in their campaign for a face-saving settlement of the long-running Kosovo dispute but know their economic success hinges on their ties to the EU and the US. Belgrade must "manipulate the superpower rivalry to secure economic resources from both superpowers and its political strategic autonomy". Vuk Vuksanović is a foreign policy expert at the Belgrade Centre for Security Policy, an associate of the Central and South-East Europe Programme at LSE IDEAS, and a prominent media commentator on strategy in the Balkans. *His book recommendations were Rival Power: Russia in Southeast Europe by Dimitar Bechev (Yale University Press, 2017) and Why War? by Christopher Coker (Hurst, 2021). Lawyer linked to DOGE is defending OPM mass email system lawsuit; DOGE staffer violated security policies at the Treasury Department, court filing shows

A lawyer who's said to have played a central role in the Department of Government Efficiency's attempted takeover of at least one federal organization is now defending in court the DOGE email system used to send email blasts to the entire U.S. government workforce. During a Feb. 6 hearing, Jacob Altik joined the defense in the ongoing lawsuit where pseudonymous federal workers have accused the Office of Personnel Management of standing up its new governmentwide email system with inadequate privacy and security protections in place. While the defense introduced him at the time as being “from OPM,” counsel for the plaintiffs filed a new notice early Monday essentially connecting the dots that Altik, through other lawsuits and public reports, has played a hands-on role in supporting the DOGE. Altik was first identified as a DOGE lawyer with an official DOGE email address hosted by the Executive Office of the President in a ProPublica article from early February, the Monday legal notice notes. Then, Altik was identified in a separate ongoing lawsuit as working hand-in-hand with DOGE associates in the organization's attempt to dismantle the U.S. African Development Foundation. The DOGE is also in the spotlight in another case where state attorneys general have sued President Donald Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent challenging DOGE access to Treasury records. In the latest development in that litigation, DOGE staffer Marko Elez, who resigned in February after racist social media posts surfaced, is said to have shared personally identifiable information in a spreadsheet with two General Services Administration officials, according to the filing from a witness in the case. The testiomony explains that Elez shared names in the spreadsheet that are considered low risk PII because the names are not accompanied by more specific identifiers, such as social security numbers or birth dates. Still, the distribution of this spreadsheet was contrary to BFS policies, in that it was not sent encrypted, and he did not obtain prior approval of the transmission as required. Zero Trust World 2025, hosted by ThreatLocker, is fast approaching (February 19-21), bringing together security professionals, IT leaders, and business executives to discuss the principles and implementation of Zero Trust. Hosted by ThreatLocker, this event offers a unique opportunity to explore real-world security challenges and solutions. In a special On Location with Sean and Marco episode recorded ahead of the event, Ryan Bowman, VP of Solutions Engineering at ThreatLocker, shares insights into his upcoming session, The Dangers of Shadow IT. Shadow IT—the use of unauthorized applications and systems within an organization—poses a significant risk to security, operations, and compliance. Bowman's session aims to shed light on this issue and equip attendees with strategies to address it effectively.Understanding Shadow IT and Its RisksBowman explains that Shadow IT is more than just an inconvenience—it's a growing challenge for businesses of all sizes. Employees often turn to unauthorized tools and services because they perceive them as more efficient, cost-effective, or user-friendly than the official solutions provided by IT teams. While this may seem harmless, the reality is that these unsanctioned applications create serious security vulnerabilities, increase operational risk, and complicate compliance efforts. One of the most pressing concerns is data security. Employees using unauthorized platforms for communication, file sharing, or project management may unknowingly expose sensitive company data to external risks. When employees leave the organization or access is revoked, data stored in these unofficial systems can remain accessible, increasing the risk of breaches or data loss.Procurement issues also play a role in the Shadow IT problem. Bowman highlights cases where organizations unknowingly pay for redundant software services, such as using both Teams and Slack for communication, leading to unnecessary expenses. A lack of centralized oversight results in wasted resources and fragmented security controls.Zero Trust as a MindsetA recurring theme throughout the discussion is that Zero Trust is not just a technology or a product—it's a mindset. Bowman emphasizes that implementing Zero Trust requires organizations to reassess their approach to security at every level. Instead of inherently trusting employees or systems, organizations must critically evaluate every access request, application, and data exchange. This mindset shift extends beyond security teams. IT leaders must work closely with employees to understand why Shadow IT is being used and find secure, approved alternatives that still support productivity. By fostering open communication and making security a shared responsibility, organizations can reduce the temptation for employees to bypass official IT policies.Practical Strategies to Combat Shadow ITBowman's session will not only highlight the risks associated with Shadow IT but also provide actionable strategies to mitigate them. Attendees can expect insights into:• Identifying and monitoring unauthorized applications within their organization• Implementing policies and security controls that balance security with user needs• Enhancing employee engagement and education to prevent unauthorized technology use• Leveraging solutions like ThreatLocker to enforce security policies while maintaining operational efficiencyBowman also stresses the importance of rethinking traditional IT stereotypes. While security teams often impose strict policies to minimize risk, they must also ensure that these policies do not create unnecessary obstacles for employees. The key is to strike a balance between control and usability. Why This Session MattersWith organizations constantly facing new security threats, understanding the implications of Shadow IT is critical. Bowman's session at Zero Trust World 2025 will provide a practical, real-world perspective on how organizations can protect themselves without stifling innovation and efficiency.Beyond the technical discussions, the conference itself offers a unique chance to engage with industry leaders, network with peers, and gain firsthand experience with security tools in hands-on labs. With high-energy sessions, interactive learning opportunities, and keynotes from industry leaders like ThreatLocker CEO Danny Jenkins and Dr. Zero Trust, Chase Cunningham, Zero Trust World 2025 is shaping up to be an essential event for anyone serious about cybersecurity. For those interested in staying ahead of security challenges, attending Bowman's session on The Dangers of Shadow IT is a must.Guest: Ryan Bowman, VP of Solutions Engineering, ThreatLocker [@ThreatLocker | On LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ryan-bowman-3358a71b/Hosts: Sean Martin, Co-Founder at ITSPmagazine [@ITSPmagazine] and Host of Redefining CyberSecurity Podcast [@RedefiningCyber] | On ITSPmagazine:  https://www.itspmagazine.com/sean-martinMarco Ciappelli, Co-Founder at ITSPmagazine [@ITSPmagazine] and Host of Redefining Society Podcast & Audio Signals Podcast | On ITSPmagazine: https://www.itspmagazine.com/itspmagazine-podcast-radio-hosts/marco-ciappelli____________________________This Episode's SponsorsThreatLocker: https://itspm.ag/threatlocker-r974____________________________ResourcesLearn more and catch more stories from ZTW 2025 coverage: https://www.itspmagazine.com/zero-trust-world-2025-cybersecurity-and-zero-trust-event-coverage-orlando-floridaRegister for Zero Trust World 2025: https://itspm.ag/threat5mu1____________________________Catch all of our event coverage: https://www.itspmagazine.com/technology-and-cybersecurity-conference-coverageTo see and hear more Redefining CyberSecurity content on ITSPmagazine, visit: https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-cybersecurity-podcastTo see and hear more Redefining Society stories on ITSPmagazine, visit:https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-society-podcastWant to tell your Brand Story Briefing as part of our event coverage? Defeating deep state crime lies with state laws

The federal government, back in campaign season, put out word that violent crime in America was down -- and not just by a little, but by quite a bit. The government put out this word because that's what the FBI said to be true. So Kamala Harris and Joe Biden and all the Democrats and the leftist boot-lickers in the media went on a concerted journey to tell how Donald Trump was lying when he said crime in America was up, up, up, and also how lucky Americans were to have a president like Biden who actually lowered crime around the nation. Then the FBI's revised statistics came out and voila, suddenly it was seen: Trump was right. Crime was up, up, up. Violent crime had risen under Biden. And all the deep staters went, whoops! Democrats and deep state players will always pretend like crime falls under their watch, even when it's oh-so-untrue. But states don't have to rely on the feds to provide border security and crime-fighting tools to ensure their communities are safe from criminals. As Christopher Holton, a senior analyst with Center for Security Policy says, states can do a lot right now to make sure criminals aren't committing crimes in their local communities. Tune in for the recommendations.

We have a unique opportunity to right the ship on foreign policy. I begin today by calling on Trump to send back all the Syrian refugees now that Sunni forces have taken over. As for foreign policy, we're joined today by Kyle Shideler of the Center for Security Policy for a deep dive on the tangled web of actors in Syria. Kyle notes that the new leader, Abu Mohammad al-Julani, is a very effective terrorist and is worse for us than a weakened Assad. He believes we should not recognize him at all, nor should we fight his enemies like ISIS. That is Turkey's problem. By simply withdrawing our support for Iran and Turkey and not fighting their enemies on their behalf, we will weaken their influence. We don't need to take a side at this point. Let's get our soldiers out of these theaters but be prepared to make a play when it makes sense. In the meantime, let the Kurds fight for themselves and let Israel do what it appears capable of doing on its own.   Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
