(Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Nigerian Christian farmers are being targeted by Fulani Muslims For many Christian farmers in the Plateau State of Nigeria, traveling to their own farms has become dangerous, reports International Christian Concern. Some have stopped going altogether. Others now move in groups, hoping that numbers will offer some protection. But for families who depend on agriculture for survival, abandoning their land is not an easy choice.  The fear has grown following a series of attacks by armed men suspected to be Fulani Muslim militias which have targeted farmers traveling to and from their fields.  On July 30, according to Christian leader Joseph Yonkpa, 60-year-old Christian farmer Bulus Turu was “attacked and macheted while returning from his farm.”  At least 27 people have been killed in ambushes, many of whom were Christian farmers traveling to their farms.  Yohana Boh, a community leader, said, “We received early warning, but the Nigerian Army ignored it. We can't sleep. We can't farm. Flash flood in Nepal killed 360 The deadly flash flood in Nepal on August 26th has killed 360 people and left 1,400 missing including 90 Americans, reports Weather.com. The flood was likely caused by a huge chunk of a glacier that broke off and temporarily dammed a river.  That may have led to the backed-up water surging downstream with enormous force a few hours later. In fact, water levels in rivers across the flood-affected region rose by as much as 29.5 feet in 30 minutes. The U.S. State Department said it is not aware of any U.S. deaths, but three Americans have been rescued. Hundreds have lost their homes across the Himalayan region, and officials reported large-scale damage to critical infrastructure, including hydropower dams, roads, buildings and bridges in the region. US Patriot missile stocks in Europe are ‘beyond critical' due to Iran war An unnamed U.S. defense official in Europe and an unnamed NATO official told the Associated Press that the U.S. military is experiencing a “beyond critical” shortage of advanced missile interceptors in Europe largely driven by President Donald Trump's war with Iran. This raises concerns about vulnerabilities in NATO countries to a potential Russian attack. The U.S. defense official said the most concerning shortfall involves Patriot missile interceptors, which can shoot down Russia's high-speed ballistic missiles. The NATO official confirmed the low inventories of Patriots among American and NATO forces in Europe. President Trump renames Lake Ontario to Lake America On August 27th, President Donald Trump said he is renaming Lake Ontario to be known as “Lake America” in the United States as he escalates his trade war with Canada, reports the Associated Press. The president signed an executive order directing the Interior Department to update the lake's name in the U.S. geographic naming service. Girl Scouts promotes Islam The Girl Scouts organization in America already has plunged neck-deep into transgenderism and abortion, with ideologies that support such leftist agendas. Now, the group is jumping into Islam, reports WorldNetDaily.com. An online report confirmed the Girls Scouts are offering "badges" that are earned by little girls when they visit mosques and learn the "Pillars of Islam." Not surprisingly, social media commenters were outraged. Turning Point USA, founded by Charlie Kirk, tweeted, “Nothing says Girl Scouts of AMERICA like learning the pillars of Islam.” And another wrote, “Never buy Girl Scout cookies again.” According to a new investigation by Natalie Winters, the White House correspondent for Steve Bannon's War Room, she documented that, "Girl Scout troops across the U.S. are incorporating Islamic religious instruction, prayer and activities, [like wearing the hijab head covering and participating in the Ramadan fast] into scouting programs.” Winters reported, "Girl Scouts Heart of Central California knew about the Sacramento Area League of Associated Muslims' religious integration years earlier. The council's 2009 annual report said that four troops with 30 girls began …  [incorporating] Girl Scouting into the mosque's youth programming. It highlighted a Ramadan sleepover involving fasting and girls 'praying through the night.'" The examples appear to involve individual troops and local councils rather than a nationwide requirement imposed on all Girl Scouts. However, there is a "nationwide pattern of Girl Scout troops based at mosques incorporating Islamic prayer, Quranic instruction, and lessons on hijab into activities conducted under the Girl Scouts banner." In Exodus 20:3, God said, “You shall have no other gods before Me.” And, to be sure, Allah, the Islamic god, is not the one true God. Mom banned from school after protesting push of sexual perversion And finally, an Oregon mother is suing Portland Public Schools for banning her from her children's elementary school for protesting its promotion of homosexual transgender “pride,” reports LifeSiteNews.com. The Oregonian reports that Allison Roberts, who has two children at Meriwether Lewis Elementary School, took issue with benches painted with “Intersex-Inclusive Progress Pride” rainbow designs. She also objected to an assignment in which one of her kids was tasked with filling out an “identity flower” exercise including gender. After a meeting with school officials to discuss her concerns, she began distributing letters about the situation outside the school, leading to a “heated exchange” with one parent. That led to a one-year trespass order keeping her off the grounds ostensibly for “threatening and intimidating members of the school community” with “harmful, unlawful and/or disruptive behavior.” As a result, Roberts was forced to miss one of her children's graduations from elementary school. Now, she is suing to reverse the trespass order and secure her rights to engage in free speech about her children's education.  Mrs. Roberts should prayerfully consider pulling her children out of the pro-perversion government schools and homeschool them instead. Today, after staying on Jon Ossoff's email list for eight years, I finally hit unsubscribe. This is my Dear Jon letter, and in some ways, the moment I will really be saying goodbye to the Democratic Party once and for all.I will admit I held on too long with Ossoff. Try as I might over the past six years since leaving the party to extricate myself from their relentless email machine, I didn't mind when Ossoff's emails flew into my mailbox. In 2017, I saw in Ossoff what the Democrats needed as they tried to find their next Obama stand-in. He fit the bill perfectly. I also liked how he didn't seem to buy into the party's increasingly crazy extremes but was comfortably moderate, at least for a time. My record with Federal political donations tells the tale. If anyone looks at my record, they'll see I continued donating to ActBlue through 2025. Except that I didn't. I just didn't realize they were charging me all that time. That's how relentless they are and how stupid I am. The Glow-UpBefore the expensive makeup, strategic lighting and tight shirts, Ossoff looked like what Steve Bannon would call a “pencil-necked geek.” He was too skinny, even if he was an Obama clone. He seemed too good, too clean for dirty politics back then. I fell for the lie that Ossoff really was a self-made man, a “filmmaker who turned to politics,” per this Wall Street Journal video.He is hardly self-made. More like a hot house flower.Ossoff grew up in a political household. Both parents were heavily involved in politics. At just 19, he began working on Capitol Hill for Rep. Hank Johnson while attending Georgetown's School of Foreign Service and continued working for him until 2012. His email list was mostly the kind of thing you'd get in the old days of the Democratic Party, the kind of thing you'd expect from the Obama clone factory. But that isn't really where Ossoff is now in his political career. He is determined not to go down as a squeaky-clean beta male. No, Ossoff has gotten SWOLE. He appears to have brought in a team to fix the look to be camera-ready. The makeup, the hair, the dimples. Ossoff finally looks the part. He can do alpha. All of a sudden, he's the guy everyone is talking about. He's the guy who is suddenly the hottie on tap. True, he's Jewish, and that's a problem for the Democrats, but no one really talks about that. Instead, they're selling the matinee idol on TikTok. The truth is, I didn't think about Jon Ossoff much until he went viral for channeling his inner sexist in a desperate bid to get attention and rise to the top of the pile. And it worked. He went viral! He's in the headlines now, and everyone knows his name. But this version of Jon Ossoff will never be president. He's abandoned what made him exceptional in the first place, his decency and his goodness. The sharks demanded flesh and blood, and he gave it to them, but it will come at a cost. One of the main reasons Democrats have failed for the past ten years to gain any purchase in this country has been their obsessive fixation on Trump, which is pretty much all Ossoff is doing.It's a race to the bottom to see who can out-Trump Trump, to be more confrontational, more bullying, more vulgar, and tougher. They believe this will solve their “man problem,” and who knows, maybe it will. I look at Ossoff now, and I don't see someone tough or brave. I see a coward.Ossoff, like James Talarico and almost every Democrat, is now leaning into the party's extremes. Because of course he is. He has to. In his viral speech in Atlanta, he referenced his daughters and said they will ask him one day how he let things get so bad, and, in the same sentence, dismiss the concerns of little girls and women in sports.Guess what, Jon: thousands of little girls will one day ask you why you let it happen, why you allowed so many of them to believe they should amputate their breasts when they could not consent. They will look to you, Jon. You will have to tell them why you pretended biological males had no advantage in sports because you were too cowardly to stand up to your own party. I once thought Ossoff was a good man. Now I see him as a desperate man, no different from any other Democrat, so much so that he's given himself over to what has become an uncontrollable fetish on the Left to dehumanize Donald Trump and his supporters. They slut-shamed Melania's modeling photos, splashing them all over social media. They suggested Trump was having an affair with his own daughter. They took a bath in Karoline Leavitt's Vanity Fair photos, which splashed all over TikTok and led to her being called KKKaroline.They mocked Kellyanne Conway's age and her face, and Sarah Huckabee Sanders' makeup. It's grotesque and repulsive, but it is typical and ongoing. Even now, Rosie O'Donnell is out there on primetime television calling Trump a “serial pedophile and rapist.” It doesn't matter if it's true. It only matters if it happened in their imagination.They spent whole seasons giggling about the particulars of the Stormy Daniels affair, and they were willing to forgive lusty E. Jean Carroll's sexy talk at Anderson Cooper and envision instead a ridiculous, implausible, violent rape incident that most likely never happened.They call Trump a rapist so they can kill him. They call him a racist so they can kill him. They call him a fascist so they can kill him. They call him a pedophile so they can kill him. They just want to kill him, and every day the hungry beast must be fed.Before you say “But Trump says…” there's a difference. No one on the Right, least of all Trump, pretends to be morally superior to the other half of the country as they have on the Left. There are no death fantasies. They don't go “no contact.” They don't destroy your career if you even so much as like a post by the other side. The price of admission in their world is that you have to want Trump dead too. You must forsake him, and then they will welcome you with open arms. That's who they are and what they've become and why I could not and will never be a part of that world anymore.Now, Ossoff has become one of them.The party of women knows destroying a woman like Natalie Harp isn't a good look, because she is sympathetic. She's a homeschooled bone cancer survivor whose father committed suicide. And Ossoff, to paraphrase Aaron Sorkin, gets on television and calls her a w***e.And that, more than anything, defines the men of the Left, too. They can't stand up to those crazy, crazy women. They have no real courage to stand up to the extremists either. They know they are muzzled and must do as they're told. Cowardly beta males like musician Bill Madden, a keyboard warrior whose fingers tingle every day when he has the chance to say the worst things he can as long as it's aimed at women on the Right. It kind of helps to see what he really looks like, just a fading nobody clinging to his youth.This quote is on his Wikipedia: “… when it comes to inequality, historically, no group of people has been discriminated against more than women. Men have been f*****g up the world for thousands of years. It's time we give more women a chance to lead.”Oh really? I guess you have to say which women, eh Bill? Not all of them. It's possible the Democrats overplayed their hand and have realized the Natalie Harp story is not a win for them. You can see them now reeling it in, trying to say Trump amplified it as a distraction because it makes the Democrats look bad. Oh no, my friends, you did that all on your own. The problem is that where there is chum in the water, there are hungry sharks. The lower the Democrats go, like Jennifer Welch and Hasan Piker, the more the candidates seeking office must feed the hungry beasts. The Party of Crazy, Crazy WomenThey might think the Great Feminization has made society better, but it has left them like a women's prison, or stranded on a desert island with the only men in sight being the weak, flaccid, pandering, ineffectual men of the Left. And that has left the women, shall we say, a bit unhinged.Can you blame the women stuck on that island for losing their minds when they saw Zohran Mamdani's TikToks? Most of what he does now seems directly related to how much women on TikTok will swoon over him. Parents' night out? Free helmets? Doxing millionaires? Free groceries? Rent freeze!Abdul El-Sayed is following the same sales pitch of aiming his TikTok videos at the young ladies, flexing his muscles and waving his backside at the camera in a way no white man could ever get away with, certainly not while positioning themselves as a sexy “Daddy” figure. They don't just want sexy back; they also want to be the party of fun and are working on a TikTok rebrand. The problem is that the base of the Democratic Party, mostly white women, are nuttier than a five-pound fruitcake. We found out just how nutty this past week as a movement began to form in support of child murderer Lindsay Clancy. There they were again, those crazy, crazy women showcasing their pathology on TikTok. They weren't shaving their heads this time or wearing blue bracelets. They were elevating Lindsay Clancy as the victim, even after she confessed to strangling the life out of her three kids.These are the kinds of lunatics whose votes Jon Ossoff needs. And that is why he has finally given them exactly what they want.The irony of all of this is Natalie Harp was hurled into the arena for unending mockery, slut-shaming, and fantasies. Doesn't she count as a woman, too? Isn't she worthy of support? A Feeding FrenzyThe media was all too ready to devour the bloody chum Ossoff threw into the water. It's just that, as with everything they do, it's not real. It's fake news. There is no bottom when it comes to how they report on Donald Trump and especially the women who surround him. But some of the lows have been extraordinary, like dragging out Harp's wayward, socialist hippie brother to exploit the tragedy of their falling out after the death of their father. It doesn't get much darker than that. In all my years of studying my family's history and the two monsters, Hitler and Stalin, who drove that history, I look back on America's own, and see the authoritarianism that established this country. The white supremacy blood lust terrorizing Black Americans, Native Americans, mass discrimination and violence against immigrants, and the list goes on. Trump, Stephen Miller, Peter Thiel, and too many others carry on that violent legacy. That's why they're aligned with the Kremlin, which sees Ukrainians as inferior.  In Ukrainian culture, we're taught to fight for our very lives, our voice, our art, our culture, our language, because no one else will. They want to erase us, so we must do the opposite and shine, shine, shine. In Ukrainian culture, art is literally survival. The coded language of poetry preserves historical truth, our shared humanity, our courage and defiance.  Life is incredibly stubborn. Creativity is how we fortify our resilience. A Reasonable Guide for Unreasonable Women provides 20 concrete steps for women–who are the favorite target of fascists, because they fear the fight in us–and their allies–to dream big for themselves and the kind of world we want to live in. That is how we reset the culture, overcome their darkness with our light, and gather our people to create a better world. We are the alternative to their dystopian vision for our future, a future that belongs to us.  To better get to new my new and most personal book, I put together this Q&A:  Empowerment can be a privilege. Many nonwhite women, especially immigrants, are juggling several jobs just to survive. How does this book make space for different lived experiences A Reasonable Guide for Unreasonable Women is based on my own lived experience of being raised in a Ukrainian immigrant family. My grandmothers both worked as maids to survive. So I take nothing for granted when it comes to the diversity of demands on women today. Throughout the book, I share wisdom and insights from women across history. There's also a recommended reading guide in the book, featuring an incredible list of women authors, like Mikki Kendall and trans activist Raquel Willis. I also share a troubling story about a Black mentor telling me to get a white man to join me for my pitch meetings and just sit there. I'm sad to say it did make a difference.  Planting seeds of hope and change – whether that's through launching a dream project like a film, book, business, non-profit, or some other ambitious goal – can be a grind. Does this book highlight organizations on the frontlines doing that unglamorous work in the shadows, helping us build that collective power?  Yes, absolutely! And I made sure that the blurbs (endorsements) featured at the front of the book included voices from grassroots groups, to promote their efforts to a wider audience. Julie Delaurier of Rise and Resist began as an organizer in ACT UP and helped organize Tesla Takedown and No Kings. She also organizes to track and resist ICE raids in NYC. She read the book and provided a heartfelt endorsement. So did civil rights leader Maya Wiley, President of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, and Holley Atkinson of the grassroots group the Media and Democracy Project bringing legal challenges to the existence of Fox News. Isn't self-help ego-driven?  A Reasonable Guide is all about collective action. Individual choices produce collective action. Think of A Reasonable Guide for Unreasonable Women as Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way meets Timothy Snyder's On Tyranny. Self-knowledge isn't the end goal here; it's the foundation for knowing where you can make an impact. It cites women across movements and their advice on how to stay creative and build power in a time of mass destruction.  But isn't this focus on the self just new age nonsense which is a slippery slope to fascism, given reports of new age online movements being breeding grounds for fascist cult recruitment? This book follows an ancient tradition of taking on an empire with the power of ideas. Ideas cannot be killed. And you cannot stop an idea whose time has come.  Know thyself was popularized by the ancient Greeks, most famously by Socrates who was a champion of women for that time. The Greeks were conquered by the sadistic and corrupt Roman Empire. A couple hundred years later, the Greeks conquered them right back through the power of self-knowledge and ideas. Greek became the dominant language of the Roman Empire. Self-knowledge is not ego. The book walks you through steps to think creatively and conquer doubt in order to build meaningful collective action.  I had to produce my film Mr. Jones myself because no one wanted it. Mr. Jones was a film to bring historical justice and truth to a massive genocide by the Kremlin, covered up for generations, including with the help of Western corruption. A former Ambassador to Ukraine called Mr. Jones Ukraine's Schindler's List. A screening was shut down in Moscow, and Memorial, Russia's once largest NGO that dared to screen it, was liquidated. There were death threats and harassment during the making of the film, but still the team and I fought on, holding on to the power of our creativity and voices. That is what A Reasonable Guide for Unreasonable Women is about: remembering the power of your voice in a world that wants to silence you and kill you. The FDA gets behind a new mRNA flu vaccine whose side effects are no joke - 75% of people who've taken it have had a bad experience with it of some kind. Have we learned nothing from COVID? I was caught between worlds in 2020. I began the year as a faithful, loyal Democrat and a true believer in Fauci the Hero vs. Trump the Villain. I was never an anti-masker or anti-vaxxer, at least, not in the beginning. As the year wore on, however, the questions started piling up in my head. Why, I wondered, was it politics as usual if this pandemic was as serious as CNN said it was? Why, if the virus was microscopic, did masks suddenly become not only essential but mandatory identifiers in our society? Why, if it was so serious, did millions flood the street on Memorial Day Weekend to protest the death of George Floyd at the hands of the police, and 1,000 health experts signed a letter saying protesting was more important than a pandemic that was supposedly hitting the black community especially hard?Every time I'd ask a question, the unified whole would scream back at me, parroting the exact same talking points from the legacy media and the Democrats. No one was allowed to even ask a question, much less question the official party line.Why? The cult of Dr. Fauci. We hadn't seen a hero rise like that since Barack Obama in 2008. We believed in him. We trusted him. We loved him. To question him became blasphemy, and even now, if you say his name among liberals, they will scowl at you.The cult of Fauci and the legacy media became one in 2020. They made him a star and, in turn, he went along with the official narrative that Trump was not competent in a crisis and helped the media convince the public to vote him out.But the truth was always chasing Dr. Fauci like a shadow, and the questions were not going away. Lucky for all of us, he kept a record of what he thought and did in 2020, and it is one history will never forget and should never forget. Dr. Fauci showed the half of America that voted for Donald Trump what he thought of them when he declined to answer any questions in Congress and instead pleaded the Fifth 111 times.Americans required something other than politics as usual when the pandemic arrived on our shores, but taking out a president was already the establishment's primary objective, and Dr. Fauci would prove instrumental in convincing Americans that Trump could not be trusted in a crisis.As Ann Coulter says on her Substack:Fauci was the left's most promising silver bullet to take out Trump. As such, the media would brook no dissent from his COVID edicts. Liberals would not only destroy the economy, but countless lives, in order to slay a pestilence worse than the virus: Donald J. Trump.Taking down a presidentIt might sound conspiratorial to say that the Democrats and their allies in the administrative state would crash the economy just to take Trump out of power, but the truth is even darker. Everything had to go wrong under Trump, including the economy.The more Fauci contradicted Trump, the more the legacy media celebrated him, elevated him, and the more the Cult of Fauci rallied around him. That led to more attacks by Trump. It's not a coincidence that cases began to surge as their own kind of October surprise, allowing the Democrats to increase measures ahead of the 2020 election. All the while, what Fauci seemed to care about most was the attention paid to him by high-profile celebrities. I was one of those people who trusted CNN and watched as they scared us, night after night, with the death count from COVID ticking upward, with no mention of who was getting hit the hardest. It just looked like everyone, everywhere was getting sick and dying.What sweet relief to hear RFK, Jr. confront Dana Bash on CNN about their willingness to pump fear into the veins of the unsuspecting public:And yet, as we found out by the Cup Foods surveillance recording, in areas the Democrats supposedly governed, like Minneapolis, the day George Floyd died, no one in that store, including him, who was still recovering from COVID, was wearing a mask. When I saw that, I realized just how small our bubble really was. Dr. Fauci knew he was a media-made star. He marvels at it throughout his diary, shaking his head at the attention paid to him but hanging on every word. But he had no immunity to this level of adulation and celebrity. This was a lot for a guy almost no one knew until he became a household name.Fauci and the BobbleheadsFauci's diaries throughout 2020 paint a picture of a seduction. Fauci the Hero was drawn in by those who projected their distrust and hatred of Trump onto him. The more he played that role, the higher his profile would rise. Of course, Hollywood would cast him that way. That's what they do. But it wasn't just Hollywood. It was all the most high-profile figures on CNN, ABC News, MSNBC, NPR, PBS and SNL. Fauci kept a healthy remove in the beginning. This wasn't his first rodeo, but he is only human after all. Trump was trying to open the country back up even in late March, instinctively knowing that in an election year, crashing the economy would be the end for him.And then, the press began to tie him to Trump:July 13, 2020:Fauci lapped up the praise with a mixture of astonishment and bemusement. Praise and adoration from Funny Girl and Pretty Woman would have gone to anyone's head.Or the painting and growing friendship with folk singer Joan Baez:A note to actor and chef Stanley Tucci promising to send cookbooks in January of 2021:Zoom calls with the best and the brightest in April of 2020:The press detailing just how beloved he was becoming in April of 2020:And of course, the bobbleheads:And somehow, Dr. Fauci even became a sex symbol.When you feel the warm embrace of the cultural elite, and you breathe that rarified air for the first time, it can be intoxicating. I've experienced a bit of it myself, but one thing you should never do is believe you are one of them, and by the end, that is what happened to Dr. Fauci. He was vulnerable because he was uncool.And of course, being routinely attacked by Trump the Villain, who was desperately trying to win re-election and could see very well what the media was doing by elevating Fauci the hero, only made Fauci more inclined to side with the side that would write his legacy. Fauci became the most important weapon against Donald Trump, as he redirected better solutions to help save kids from lockdowns, bring the economy back, and allow some common sense with masks and social distancing. Trump had to fail, and that's why Fauci became a superstar. Mass Formation PsychosisBy the time Biden took power, the entire Left was locked into “Mass Formation Psychosis,” per Mattias Desmet by way of Dr. Robert W. Malone: Fauci was trotted out to validate all of the bad policy pushed out by the Biden administration once they took power. Through it all, he maintained his tight connection to Joan Baez and Barbra Streisand, having dinner with them, advising them privately. Many were singing songs about him. Love for Fauci, trust in his word, became interchangeable with taking the vaccine. Fauci was the vaccine just as he was the science. No one would dare doubt him or question his advice. He was the leader of a cult by now and drunk on that power.But in casting his lot with the Trump “resistance,” he abandoned the other half of the country as most of our ruling elite did. But they are Americans and Fauci worked for them too. He betrayed their trust again and again and could not even be bothered to show them the respect of answering their questions. The truth would eventually come out. Dr. Jay Bhattacharya was brought back on X after having been shadow-banned for “disinformation” and is now the head of the CDC. We would finally find out that toddlers didn't need to be masked and most children did not need to be kept out of school, and Trump's efforts to open them back up that he was attacked for again and again were the right call. Why had we done that to them? How had we all gone along with it? This got much worse under Biden. It was as though the campaign to dump Trump turned into the new normal and everyone had to stand by the story.Here is Jeremy Boreing:The Fauci myth also propped up the legacy media so much so that even now, they have to link arms with the Democrats to defend him.For many Americans, the legacy media propped up the official story the Democrats needed to be true to take out a one-term president with a strong economy. But they built a high wall of protection that meant even when we finally knew the truth - that the vaccine did not stop the spread and masks offered minimal support - the legacy media would not tell the public the truth.My nephew flew in from Thailand to finally see all of us after a year of separation. He'd already contracted and survived COVID, so he was immune, but because he was not vaccinated, members of my family forbade him from visiting. I kept screaming, “He already got COVID! He doesn't need the vaccine!” But no. If Fauci didn't say it, if ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, the New York Times didn't say it, they would not listen. You had to be vaccinated to enter restaurants, theaters, even family gatherings. Dr. Fauci knew the truth. He knew the vaccine was from a lab leak. He knew it might cause harm to some. He knew it was untested. He continued to push a one-size-fits-all solution, and anyone who didn't go along with it was treated like an enemy of the state. But for him, his legacy was already written, and nothing was going to take it from him.I lost three loved ones during COVID. One overdosed during lockdowns from loneliness. Another dropped dead suddenly of a heart attack in his early 50s. My uncle did not take the vaccine and died from COVID.It was never a one-size-fits-all solution to force everyone to inject an experimental drug, even if it saved the lives of many. It probably saved my life. But it should have been a choice, not a public pressure campaign that demanded all go along with it or they would be demonized as “anti-vaxxers.”People should have been told the truth about what it was and what it wasn't. That was Dr. Fauci's job, but at some point, he realized he had to push the party line because that is what got him into the club, over that high castle wall and in the presence of greatness. The two mirror events that depict the Two Americas could not be more stark, as now Dr. Fauci has been held in Contempt of Congress. Steve Bannon and Peter Navarro were not just held in contempt but thrown in jail over January 6th, the first time in over 50 years anyone was put in jail for the offense. It's unlikely Dr. Fauci will go to jail. Instead, he will go down in history as a hero because the more powerful side still writes that history, at least for now. Fauci might have been a real hero if he'd faced the committee and the people and simply answered the questions, no matter how difficult. That is what you do when you have nothing to hide. Neste novo episódio da série Termos Ambíguos, o verbete abordado é o “Globalismo”, que ganhou destaque durante o primeiro governo Donald Trump, ao ser contraposto ao patriotismo e à liberdade em seu discurso político. Desde então, passou a integrar o vocabulário de movimentos antiglobalistas, influenciando também o governo Bolsonaro. No entanto, o conceito é complexo e controverso, envolvendo diferentes interpretações, atores políticos e relações com questões contemporâneas, especialmente no contexto brasileiro. Para apresentar um debate sobre o termo, entrevistamos a Sonia Corrêa, o Fernando Brancoli e o Douglas Sanque, que foi também o autor do verbete no Termos ambíguos do debate político atual: pequeno dicionário que você não sabia que existia, disponível para download gratuito no site do Observatório de Sexualidade e Política. _________________________ Roteiro Ernesto Araújo: “Eu acho que o mais grave do globalismo é na mente, no pensamento. Eu acho que o globalismo é perigoso porque é sobretudo um sistema de pensamento, de anti pensamento. […] Tatiane Amaral:  Quem está falando aqui é Ernesto Araújo, ex-ministro de relações internacionais do governo Bolsonaro Sonora Ernesto Araújo: […] Eu vejo o globalismo muito como o processo pelo qual a ideologia marxista, a partir do começo dos anos 90 e sobretudo a partir dos anos 2000, ela penetra na globalização econômica e faz dela o veículo da sua propagação. Então, justamente através da globalização  começa a entrar com sua agenda em temas como ideologia de gênero, em temas como o ambientalismo distorcido, e outros. E começa sobretudo a controlar o discurso, a dizer o que você pode dizer e o que você não pode dizer, e cada vez o que você pode dizer é menos, ocupa um menor espaço. Então, eu vejo mais o globalismo assim, aquela ideia de que o marxismo descobriu que ele não precisa controlar os meios de produção econômica, quando ele pode controlar o meio de produção de ideias, que é o que já vinha acontecendo. E é através desse controle de ideias começa a capturar instituições e aí começa a partir dessas instituições tentar  agir para diminuir as identidades nacionais, e as identidades pessoais também. A fala pode até soar exagerada, parecer coisa de filme ou de teoria da conspiração… mas ela está se tornando cada vez mais presente em discursos políticos da ultradireita — seja no Brasil ou no mundo. E ela gira em torno de uma palavra: globalismo. Mas afinal, você sabe o que, de fato, é globalismo? Daniel Faria: Eu sou o Daniel Faria  Tatiane: E eu sou a Tatiane Amaral. E este é o sétimo episódio da Série Termos Ambíguos, uma parceria entre o Observatório de Sexualidade e Política e o podcast Oxigênio. Daniel: Juntos, vamos conduzir esta viagem pelo termo que tem estado cada vez mais presente nos discursos políticos globais e nacionais. Falei em viagem porque o termo se vincula a globo, a planeta, além de ser usado em muitos países. Mas também não deixa de ser uma viagem no sentido figurado mesmo, pois o termo como é usado pela extrema direita evoca um certo devaneio, ou até mesmo delírio.  Tatiane: O termo “Globalismo” é mais uma categoria acusatória fabricada pela extrema direita, assim como muitos outros espantalhos, alguns que a gente até já tratou aqui no Termos Ambíguos, como Ideologia de gênero, marxismo cultural,racismo reverso…  Daniel: A extrema direita usa esses e vários outros termos com objetivos específicos: Por um lado, eles querem provocar o medo e, sobretudo, a suspeita. De outro, criar confusão mesmo.⁠ No caso de Globalismo as confusões são muitas e muito sobrepostas, mas vamos tentar esclarecer algumas delas neste episódio. Tatiane: Pra começar, precisamos esclarecer que Globalismo não é a mesma coisa que Globalização. Eu sei que é confuso, mas vem comigo: Globalização é a denominação da transnacionalização intensificada de relações econômicas, culturais e sociais, que se registrou a partir do fim da Guerra Fria. Já o Globalismo pode ser descrito como uma desfiguração de globalização, que atribui a essas dinâmicas outros sentidos, em geral associados à dominação, a atores obscuros e à conspiração.  Daniel: No dicionário de termos ambíguos, que você pode encontrar aqui na descrição desse episódio o verbete escrito pelo Douglas Sanque, que vai aparecer na nossa conversa daqui a pouco, traça um histórico desse processo desde 1991, quando a União Soviética chegou ao fim e seus ex-membros foram integrados à nova ordem neoliberal global. É aí que se consolida a globalização, que foi uma integração via mercados ao redor do… Globo.  Tatiane: Esse movimento promoveu uma ampla abertura de mercados que intensificou a concorrência internacional. Nesse processo foram estimulados os acordos de livre comércio e a formação de blocos econômicos. Em tese, isso deveria favorecer todas as nações, mas vamo lá, né? A gente sabe que não foi bem assim. Claro que os países mais desenvolvidos e industrializados se deram melhor.  Daniel: Foi aí, no meio desse processo, que a União Europeia foi criada, a partir do chamado Mercado Comum Europeu. Foi esse mercado que ampliou a integração que era só, econômica para uma integração política e institucional. Após o fim da Guerra Fria, nos anos 90, a União Europeia se expandiu, incorporando países do Leste Europeu, que antes integravam a antiga União Soviética. Tatiane: Depois disso, foram surgindo blocos econômicos pelo mundo todo, como o Mercosul, por exemplo, que é o Mercado Comum do Sul, formado por Brasil, Argentina, Uruguai e Paraguai. Tem também o Nafta, um Tratado entre México, Estados Unidos e Canadá, assinado em 1994 e atualizado em 2020 como Acordo Estados Unidos-México-Canadá. Além disso, as Economias asiáticas também se fortaleceram nesse contexto, com destaque para os Tigres Asiáticos, formado por Taiwan, Coreia do Sul, Hong Kong e Singapura. Sem falar da China, que também ampliou muito suas relações comerciais internacionais nesse período.  Daniel: A Sonia Corrêa, coordenadora do Observatório de Sexualidade e Política e do projeto do Dicionário, já conversou com a gente em outros episódios do Termos Ambíguos, e dessa vez ela destaca um ponto importante desse processo da Globalização:a expansão do neoliberalismo. E ela lembra que o processo nunca foi tranquilo e nem poupado de críticas.  Tatiane: A Sonia comenta que o Neoliberalismo estava em expansão desde o final dos anos setenta. Com o fim da guerra fria e o desaparecimento do bloco soviético, todo esse espaço econômico passou a analisar (e sentir) os efeitos negativos da expansão do pensamento neoliberal nas desigualdades econômicas dentro dos países, ENTRE países e, mais especialmente, entre o NORTE e o SUL globais.  Daniel: Durante todo o processo, muitos acordos foram sugeridos, mas nem sempre as tentativas deram certo. Um bom exemplo foi a tentativa de implantação da Área de Livre Comércio das Américas, a ALCA, que integraria os mercados de 34 países das Américas, exceto Cuba, eliminando as tarifas e os impostos de importação. A proposta era de George Bush, então presidente dos Estados Unidos, mas não foi pra frente, justamente por causa da grande disparidade de recursos e poder entre os países. Tatiane: Vale a pena a gente dizer que quando os países começaram a entrar nessa chamada “economia global”, muita coisa mudou internamente também. Por exemplo, várias indústrias saíram da Europa e dos Estados Unidos e foram pra lugares como a China ou o México, onde produzir é mais barato, principalmente por causa da mão de obra. Ao mesmo tempo, a globalização também trouxe a privatização de serviços públicos, como saúde e educação, reformas nas leis trabalhistas desfavoráveis a trabalhadoras e trabalhadores, assim como dos sistemas de aposentadoria. Também ativou novas formas ainda mais agressivas de extrativismo. Tudo isso contribuiu para o aumento das desigualdades. E foi nesse clima que a categoria acusatória “globalismo” prosperou e se aproveitou da atmosfera de contestação à globalização para impulsionar seu projeto político que não tem nenhum compromisso com a superação da desigualdade.    Daniel: Autores e autoras, como a Wendy Brown, analisaram como a expansão da lógica neoliberal teve efeitos negativos sobre a política e sobre a nossa forma de pensar e sentir, provocando dinâmicas de erosão da democracia, como estamos vivendo agora. O historiador Quinn Slobodian, autor do livro Globalistas: o fim do império e o nascimento do neoliberalismo, entende que o projeto  neoliberal  tem  como objetivo criar instituições para proteger o capitalismo da ameaça que a  própria democracia representa. E essas novas instituições serviriam para reorganizar o mundo como um espaço de Estados-competidores. Tatiane: Mas o espantalho do “globalismo” não se aproveitou apenas da crítica progressista e da insatisfação real com a globalização. Ele também acionou suas próprias assombrações. Para entender isso é preciso voltar no tempo, lá pros anos 1940, ao final da II Guerra Mundial. Na verdade, vamos voltar até um pouco mais, com a ajuda da Sonia Correa. Sonia Corrêa: Bom, para compreender essa posição dos globalistas há um aspecto que não pode ser perdido de vista. Para a direita, a ultra direita norte americana desde o começo do século XX, pelo menos, foi avessa a uma ordem institucional transnacional. E essa ultra direita raiz, fez uma enorme oposição à adesão dos Estados Unidos à Primeira Guerra Mundial. Tiveram posições contra a Liga das Nações e certamente fizeram pressão contra a entrada dos Estados Unidos na Segunda Guerra Mundial. Ou seja, tem um DNA muito profundo aí na ultra direita norte americana, que é contrário a existência de uma ordem internacional de regulação global. É porque eles a veem como um contraponto ou uma possível ameaça à ordem hegemônica dos Estados Unidos como império. Eu acho que um outro aspecto a considerar que, se isso é, são as correntes de ultra direita norte americana e outras correntes, como por exemplo, a posição do Dugin, o intelectual russo sobre isso e talvez de segmentos das correntes européias. E tem a ver com um repúdio. Como essas forças fazem um repúdio à ideia da modernidade, os princípios liberais de democracia e direitos humanos. E há uma conexão também por esse lado, que é, digamos, mais filosófica e menos estratégica política.  Tatiane: Além da cooperação multilateral econômica, os países criaram também um sistema para prevenir novos conflitos bélicos e promover a paz. Sim, estou falando da Organização das Nações Unidas, a ONU.  Daniel: No contexto dos giros políticos à ultradireita que tem varrido as Américas e a Europa hoje, os discursos anti-globalistas fizeram da ONU um de seus alvos principais. Seus detratores a descrevem como um aparato de dominação que quer impor sua agenda aos estados nacionais. Ao fazer isso ofuscam o que é de fato a ONU.  Não sei pra você, mas até aqui essa história de globalismo continua bem confusa pra mim. Então, pra gente continuar destrinchando esse termo, falamos com o  Fernando Brancoli. Ele é professor do Instituto de Relações Internacionais e Defesa, da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro e adicionou elementos que nos ajudam a desarmar qualquer confusão que o termo globalismo possa provocar.  Fernando Brancoli: Bom, eu acho que um ponto interessante é a gente imaginar que o discurso antiglobalista, ele não é uma rejeição integral aos princípios da globalização, né? A gente está falando de uma reconfiguração seletiva no que seria uma espécie de dispositivo narrativo, né? Que separa, separaria, uma globalização boa para esses grupos de extrema direita, uma aproximação que permeia dimensões ligadas a interesses morais, econômicos, culturais e o que eles vão chamar muitas vezes de globalismo, né, que seria uma globalização ruim, que seria um conjunto de normas e procedimentos derivados principalmente do pós-guerra fria, que promoveria aí uma agenda ligada a valores liberais, a direitos sexuais, a direitos humanos, políticas ambientais, que de alguma maneira estariam violando então a soberania dos países, e na verdade tentando, dentro de uma teoria da conspiração bastante clássica, implementar uma agenda de uma espécie de camarilha internacional dos Illuminati e coisas parecidas, né? Tatiane: A professora de sociologia na Universidade de Oxford, Rita Abrahamsen, faz uma análise interessante sobre este tema do espaço transnacional. Pra ela a extrema direita é em si mesma global, ao mesmo tempo em que seus idealizadores ocultam de maneira muito hábil essa transnacionalidade. O Fernando também elaborou sobre essa dimensão oculta, o que nos ajuda a esclarecer uma outra confusão de que as vozes que propagam o fantasma do Globalismo reivindicam para si, como sujeitos nacionalistas ou soberanistas:  Fernando Brancoli: Muitas vezes a gente fala dessas redes antiglobalistas como se elas fossem necessariamente não transnacionais, o que não é verdade. O que elas estão fazendo é reconfigurando um pouco esse dispositivo narrativo. E acho que quem está acompanhando a gente talvez já tenha escutado essa história: “Ah, o Trump é um isolacionista”. Não necessariamente, né? A gente não está falando de uma antiglobalização de necessariamente fechamento completo das fronteiras. Você tem uma recalibragem dessa dinâmica, de um projeto novo de recentralização de poder. Então, sim, eu posso ter dinâmicas mais isolacionistas em alguma medida, construção de muros, expulsão de migrantes e refugiados, fechamento de trocas comerciais tipicamente liberais, mas ao mesmo tempo eu tenho aproximação para outros lados, né? Em que eu apoio ditaduras amigas, eu argumento que posso criar coletivos transnacionais de apoio a dinâmicas de moralidade. Então acho que esse paradoxo, no final das contas … Eu diria que é a grande força dela, que é criar essa espécie muito peculiar de uma internacional nacionalista.  Daniel: Fernando também recorre a uma metáfora  de verniz legitimador para explicar essa mistura paradoxal de discursos que juntam nacionalismo ou antiglobalismo para servir a interesses muito específicos:  Fernando Brancoli: Esse paradoxo é a grande força dentro desse processo. [03:30] A genealogia dessas dinâmicas já passa por think tanks dos Estados Unidos e a gente tem livros importantes acadêmicos já descrevendo como é que eles se expandiram pelo globo ao longo pelo menos nas últimas duas décadas, né? Então são grupos de pesquisa, são empresas que de alguma maneira promovem esse tipo de ideário. Tatiane: Pra entender melhor como esse paradoxo funciona, pedimos pro Fernando explicar como esses discursos colam, como eles têm aderência a uma massa bastante volumosa, que inclusive elege conscientemente essas figuras. Ao mesmo tempo em que batem no peito e dizem: “EU SOU patriota, EU VOU defender meu país”, entregam de mãos abertas a exploração das riquezas naturais brasileiras — como a Amazônia,os minérios e, agora, as Terras Raras do país — a uma potência imperialista como os Estados Unidos. Além disso, defendem intervenções externas, como a retirada forçada de um presidente, e apoiam movimentos extremistas que ameaçam o próprio país. Fernando Brancoli: Acho que essa aparente contradição, né, de uma internacional nacionalista, a ideia de como é que eu crio alianças entre partidos e grupos que são notadamente, introspectivos diante desse tipo de processo, eh, na verdade, é a maior força desses grupos. É a ideia de mobilizar esse paradoxo. E não se trata necessariamente de, uma dinâmica que vai gerar problemas na frente, eu vou tentar explicar porquê dentro desse processo. Acho que a primeira configuração é que sejam partidos de extrema direita no contexto brasileiro, sejam grupos não partidários, como, por exemplo, grupos evangélicos mais conservadores no contexto brasileiro, sejam grupos mega ortodoxos sionistas em Israel, ou seja, agora, o Partido Republicano nos Estados Unidos. Todos eles olham para o transnacionalismo como uma forma de ganhar poder e ganhar prestígio, então a gente tá falando de recursos que circulam nesse processo. A gente tem por exemplo grupos em Israel, grupos não tradicionais do Brasil como partidos ligados a lideranças religiosas e coisas parecidas que de alguma maneira olham para esse processo e veem a transnacionalização como uma ferramenta de ganhar poder e prestígio, seja simbólico ou material. Exemplo clássico que eu acho bastante interessante, parte importante dos grupos de extrema direita em Israel, dos mais ortodoxos, são financiados por capitalistas norte-americanos. Né? Isso não é uma teoria de conspiração, eles argumentam que essa grana seria interessante. Tem um trabalho interessante da Camille Rocha, né? Menos Marx e mais Mises, um livro fascinante em que ela descreve como é que os norte-americanos financiaram grupos liberais e anarco-capitalistas, sabe-se lá o que que é isso, no contexto brasileiro. Então, lembrar que esse transnacionalismo tem dimensões práticas muito claras, né? Daniel: Aqui, de novo fica claro que o transnacionalismo pode ter dimensões práticas, e que ele serve para alguns interesses. Ou seja, mesmo sendo nacionalista, dá pra ser transnacionalista quando você, ou o país, pode ter dividendos importantes. Brancoli usou o exemplo de Eduardo Bolsonaro para mostrar como contatos estratégicos com a ultra-direita ajudaram a movimentação para as taxações sobre produtos brasileiros e a suspensão de vistos para autoridades envolvidas na condenação do pai. Mas o professor dá outros exemplos, segundo ele mais simbólicos, como contatos pessoais, encontros ou declarações nos quais se aprende essa lógica transnacional.  Fernando Brancoli: Você tem encontro do Vox, por exemplo, que é o partido de extrema direita na Espanha, que eles têm uma sessão à tarde do último dia, que é para ensinar técnicas do que eles chamam engajamento digital. Em que você senta com lideranças políticas do globo inteiro numa mesa e te ensinam como é que você faz para, por exemplo, ter acesso mais interessante de pessoas, formar cortes e vídeos bacanas. Eu lembro que nos últimos 3 anos quem esteve lá foi o Nicolas, deputado é, federal de Minas, que é um cara, né, muito especializado em gerar cortes e coisas parecidas. Eu acho que ele já tinha uma capacidade de fazer isso, mas provavelmente ele aprendeu também nesse contexto. Repare como é que o transnacionalismo dentro dessa lógica gera esse tipo de prática. E por fim, o transnacionalismo, ele facilita algo que é muito típico de grupos autoritários que é a possibilidade de criar um mundo binário, né? De você criar um nós contra eles de maneira muito muito clara. Acho que, né, a gente que estuda relações internacionais, quem tem acesso, né, à imprensa, sabe que é muito difícil você criar uma narrativa muito clara de bonzinhos e malvados dentro de um contexto, né? Você vê nuances, você vê pessoas muitas vezes em busca da paz dos dois lados e coisas parecidas, né? Tatiane: E nessa disputa entre nós e eles, surgem dois pólos entre o bem e o mal. E quem é o bem? Quem é o mal? A ultra direita entende que está do lado do bem, de que quem defende a “família” e os valores tradicionais. Mas quem não defende a família, ou as famílias? A sua família? Os seus valores tradicionais, na sua tradição? E para quem está nesse campo da ultra direita, o mal é o socialismo, o comunismo, a esquerda. De novo aqui o Fernando:  Fernando Brancoli: Existe aqueles que do outro lado, que é o mal, que é o PT, o MST, o Foro de São Paulo e a Venezuela, que querem acabar com esses valores, querem destruir todos esses dessas menções. Aí repare como é que esses vetores se aproximam, né? Uma dinâmica de moralidade, uma dinâmica econômica, então vira um caldo complexo aqui dentro desse tipo de processo. Nós somos soberanos ainda, no caso brasileiro, estaremos tentando retomar essa soberania agora que foi roubada pelo PT e temos um governo aliado norte-americano que está tentando nos ajudar nesse processo.  Mas eu acho que esse paradoxo ele acaba sendo de alguma maneira articulado e promovido de maneira interessante. Ainda tem um paradoxo aqui, que é para você ser essencialmente nacionalista e mobilizar dinâmicas transnacionais. Mas acho que mesmo a tentativa de encontrar um meio-termo já facilita e já gera repercussões interessantes. E aí você tem em todo protesto no Brasil, cartazes em inglês, bandeiras dos Estados Unidos, bandeiras de Israel, você tem a a deputados fugindo para a Itália, onde seria supostamente, né, um lugar mais conservador. Ao que tudo indica a Zambelli não vai conseguir ficar por lá há muito tempo. Mas aí você tem o Eduardo Bolsonaro, né, indo para os Estados Unidos, você tem essas mobilizações, isso vai gerando repercussões e impactos e pelo menos são simbólicos gera mídia, a população fica engajada. Então, de alguma maneira tem algo interessante que a gente tá vendo e os manuais de ciência política e de relações internacionais estão todos passando mal por causa disso, que a esquerda tá se transformando por um lado numa defensora do multilateralismo. Daniel: Tem também a China se apresentando como defensora da OMC e contra tarifas praticadas pelos Estados Unidos. Isso também é uma mudança do contexto da esquerda, como disse nosso entrevistado.  A gente tem um deslocamento também, eu diria, do que vai ser o discurso progressista de esquerda ao longo dos próximos anos. A esquerda se apropriou mais de discursos ligados à proteção da indústria nacional, né, contra ALCA e o FMI, contra as empresas estrangeiras, e agora de alguma maneira a gente está vendo uma rearticulação desse tipo de processo. É, a gente está inaugurando uma forma nova de olhar para relações internacionais, em parte porque também está tendo uma rearticulação de como esses grupos de poder estão se configurando. Ninguém tem muita certeza para onde que a gente vai, mas acho que uma das certezas que a gente vai ter que os manuais de relações internacionais e ciência política vão ter que ser reescritos ao longo dos próximos anos, porque as coisas estão mudando de maneira bastante explícita, né? Muito. Tatiane: Sonia Corrêa diz que há duas saídas pra grande confusão que apresentamos aqui entre nacionalismo e globalismo. A primeira é o progressivismo internacionalista que remete para o internacionalismo histórico da esquerda, e a segunda é o que pode ser chamado de constitucionalismo de esquerda. Ela explica melhor do que se trata. Sonia Correa: O que importa é chamar a atenção para essa mélange de posições que requer clarificação, porque, de fato, a crítica do globalismo, ela chove num terreno fértil, que é a crítica do neoliberalismo e da ordem capitalista, não é? Ela ecoa nesse lugar. Ela move afetos, afetos legítimos de crítica. A racionalidade neoliberal e a ordem do capitalismo tardio. A diferença está como diz o Slobodan, em qual a saída? A diferença de visão ideológica é como você sai disso. Se você for para o campo do Dugin, que é a teoria da quarta transformação, é uma ordem. Uma proposição de um retorno a uma ordem de fato quase medieval, quer dizer centrada na terra, no território, numa cultura comum, numa ordem hierárquica. Se você olha para o campo da direita. Num certo sentido, Trump é a manutenção da ordem neoliberal e da racionalidade neoliberal extrema, demolição do Estado. Todo o poder às Big Techs. Aqui são os meus amigos Better Friend Ever, sob um invólucro, uma casca de nacionalismo extremado. Make American big again. Tatiane: Voltando um pouco atrás, no verbete para o Dicionário de Termos Ambíguos, e no tempo, Douglas lembrou da influência de Ernesto Araújo e de Olavo de Carvalho sobre o governo Bolsonaro, no sentido da adoção de uma posição antiglobalista. Vale lembrar que mesmo antes de ser eleito, Bolsonaro afirmava que a ONU não servia para nada e que iria tirar o Brasil do Conselho de Direitos Humanos. Em sua primeira aparição na Assembleia Geral da ONU em 2019, o ex-presidente fez a seguinte afirmação:  Sonora Jair Bolsonaro: “Não estamos aqui para apagar nacionalidades e soberanias em nome de um interesse global abstrato. Esta não é a Organização do Interesse Global! É a Organização das Nações Unidas. Assim deve permanecer!” Daniel: Douglas também escreveu no verbete que Ernesto Araújo afirmava que o caminho para reverter os efeitos negativos do globalismo seria adotar uma política pautada por deus, pátria e família. Com certeza vocês ouviram isso muitas vezes, né? Só pra lembrar, esse é o slogan da Ação Integralista, movimento fascista brasileiro da década de 1930, copiado do movimento fascista italiano.  Tatiane: Ainda segundo o verbete a espiritualidade cristã caracterizaria o ocidente e diferenciaria as nações ocidentais do materialismo asiático e do islamismo. Por outro lado, a família é definida como a célula basilar da nação, o apego à família  seria um traço fundamental do povo brasileiro o qual, nas palavras de Araújo, se vê hoje frontalmente atacado por “ideologia de gênero”, “gayzismo” e “abortismo”.  Daniel: O “globalismo”, na visão de Ernesto Araújo, seria um projeto de governo totalitário mundial, capitaneado pela China e com o apoio da Rússia. E nessa versão do antiglobalismo, existiria um complô entre as elites financeiras ocidentais e o Partido Comunista da China para a implantação de uma sociedade de controle. O ex-ministro ainda afirmava que a China controlava metade do parlamento brasileiro e toda a nossa agricultura, e queria controlar nossa Internet.  Tatiane: Bem, essa tentativa de controle da internet a gente já tá vendo que existe mesmo, mas não por acaso, esse controle não está na China, né? E além desta, qual outra afirmação, entre as muitas feitas aqui, parecem verdadeiras? E quais delas são pura fantasmagoria criada no meio das muitas confusões que esse termo cria? De quais fantasias ele depende para se manter? Bem, responder a tudo isso demandaria uma boa aula de muitas horas… Mas, podemos explicar aqui essa confusão entre os muitos alvos de ataque das vozes “antiglobalistas” Daniel: Mas nem todos os anti globalistas têm o mesmo inimigo. Há diferenças em relação aos alvos dos “antiglobalistas”. Nos Estados Unidos, por exemplo, Trump se utiliza do discurso “antiglobalista” para atacar as “elites liberais”, associadas ao partido democrata estadunidense. Já aqui no Brasil, Bolsonaro denunciava a “conspiração comunista” da qual participaria o PT, assimilando a visão “antiglobalista” ao discurso anticomunista. Douglas Sanque conta um pouco dessas forças globalistas. Tatiane: Douglas é professor na Universidade Estadual do Rio de Janeiro, a UERJ e é o autor do verbete sobre Globalismo do dicionário que estamos tratando aqui. Ele escreveu o verbete durante a pandemia do Covid-19, em pleno governo Bolsonaro, quando nele discursavam, pra não dizer doutrinavam, antiglobalistas assumidos como Olavo de Carvalho, professor e ideólogo de Bolsonaro, e Ernesto Araújo, que foi ministro de relações exteriores até 2021.  Douglas Sanque: Bom, em relação a essa noção de quem seriam as chamadas forças globalistas, primeiro, a ideia aqui é pensar que as forças globalistas teriam o objetivo de estabelecer um controle mundial, um governo global, totalitarista. E isso é, em alguma medida, uma perversão da ideia de aumento de influência que potências  econômicas sempre tentaram exercer de maneira mais ou menos ética. Mas não se tenta um governo global totalitário, assim inspirado naquela ideia de 1984 do George Orwell. O principal projeto globalista seria capitaneado pela China. Os chineses teriam essa ideia, teriam esse objetivo de longo prazo de controle mundial. Então, seriam as elites liberais do Ocidente que estariam nesse projeto junto ao Partido Comunista Chinês. Essa é a perspectiva, digamos, principal, que é adotada, por exemplo, pelo Steve Bannon e que guia o assim chamado antiglobalismo, ou o nacionalismo americano, que estaria combatendo essas próprias elites, representando o povo, o blue color, os trabalhadores e a classe média americana que, de fato, viu muita s perdas com o processo de desindustrialização dos Estados Unidos ao longo do século XX, e grande parte dessas plantas industriais foi para a China.  Tatiane: Claro que isso causou mudanças significativas na economia americana, que tem levado o país, de forma mais incisiva neste novo governo de Donald Trump, a criar estratégias de proteção econômica. Durante o governo Bolsonaro, quando o Olavo de Carvalho, exercia influência sobre ministros e filho do então presidente, tratou da versão caseira de teoria da conspiração, como nos conta Douglas. Douglas Sanque: O Olavo dizia que havia três projetos globalistas em curso. Em diferentes escalas e com diferentes objetivos. O primeiro seria esse tocado pela China, que tentaria ali uma ideia de governo global, mais ou menos nesses moldes que eu já mencionei. O segundo seria o projeto do Irã. O Irã também teria esse objetivo de governo global, a partir do espraiamento do islamismo, né? Na verdade, a ideia seria um governo global, totalitário islâmico e a principal força por trás desse projeto seria o Irã, que tem ali uma. População muçulmana xiita. Enfim, você tem uma pluralidade importante naturalmente no Irã, mas.    Daniel: O terceiro projeto seria tocado pelas elites financeiras ocidentais. Nessa perspectiva, representada por autores como o russo Aleksandr Dugin [DUGAN], a tentativa de estabelecer uma governança global teria origem no Ocidente, especialmente nos Estados Unidos, vistos como a principal expressão da modernidade ocidental. Nessa visão, esse projeto deveria ser combatido por forças tradicionalistas que defendem a preservação de identidades culturais próprias e de modos de vida considerados mais enraizados nas tradições locais e rurais. Douglas Sanque: Então você tem pensadores, como o Olavo de Carvalho, o Steve Bannon e o Dugin, e os líderes daqui que conseguiram ascender, com esse pensamento, ao poder nos seus países. O Putin na Rússia, o Trump nos Estados Unidos e o Jair aqui no Brasil. A questão é que, como esse pensamento tem muito pouca, digamos, base material, ele vai se moldando pra acomodar os interesses políticos dos líderes. Então a gente pode pensar, por exemplo, no Brasil como o Bolsonaro, se se elege em oposição a um projeto que seria de esquerda e que, na opinião deles, é comunista. A ideia de liberalismo econômico é uma ideia que faz sentido e que pode ser defendida. Os russos têm um papel curioso, porque em diversas situações eles são vistos ali como como uma espécie de braço ou de sócio minoritário dos chineses. Mas ao mesmo tempo, estive vendo, um entende que os russos deveriam estar nessa luta por conta de uma certa essência da identidade russa. É como, como sendo da Igreja Ortodoxa nós teríamos a mesma alma cristã. E tudo se opondo então ao materialismo que caracterizaria o projeto chinês De extirpar a religião da da vida em comunidade. Então a gente percebe que há uma certa coerência no pensamento do globalismo, no sentido de criar uma ordem global que separa muito claramente quem são os mocinhos e quem são os bandidos. Que coloca em uma nação específica. E normalmente é a China, a fonte de todo mal. E aí, contra isso, vale tudo. E nós estamos numa batalha aqui para salvar a nossa nação, para salvar as nossas tradições, para manter o nosso povo e por aí vai.  Tatiane: Pois é, as mudanças estão bastante evidentes e não sei se são para melhor. Desde que fizemos as entrevistas para este episódio, algumas coisas mudaram. O primeiro-ministro da Hungria, Viktor Orbán, um dos principais líderes da extrema-direita global, perdeu as eleições após 16 anos no poder. Estados Unidos e Israel estão promovendo uma grande guerra na Ásia Ocidental, atacando o Irã e o Líbano, sem contar o genocídio que Israel já vinha praticando na Palestina. Aqui na América Latina, os resultados das eleições presidenciais de 2026 em países como Colômbia, Peru e Chile não foram nem um pouco animadores. E neste ano também teremos eleições no Brasil, já com dois extremistas como candidatos: Ronaldo Caiado, pelo PSD, e Flávio Bolsonaro, herdeiro do legado do pai que foi condenado a 27 anos de prisão, e agora também envolvido em um processo de lavagem de dinheiro ligado ao Banco Master. There's a stretch dedicated to Steve Bannon's War Room appearances and a somewhat confusing back and forth clip involving the hosts talking about themselves talking about Bannon (yes, really), plus a JD Vance clip worth chewing on. The back half gets into Trump's new round of tariffs on sixty countries tied to forced labor violations, and how he keeps finding fresh legal angles to impose tariffs even after the Supreme Court pushed back on the old ones. Toss in a Laura Loomer and Ukraine detour, and it's a fuller episode than the "boring week" opener let on.

Jeffrey Epstein maintained close and mutually useful relationships with author Michael Wolff and political strategist Steve Bannon during the years after his 2008 conviction. Wolff conducted extensive interviews with Epstein and remained in contact with him while gathering material about Donald Trump, becoming both a chronicler of Epstein's world and, at times, an adviser on how Epstein might navigate mounting media scrutiny. Bannon's relationship appears to have gone even further, with the two men regularly exchanging political advice, arranging travel and discussing international contacts. Bannon also recorded hours of interviews with Epstein for a proposed documentary and privately described the project as media training aimed at pushing back against the trafficking allegations and rebuilding Epstein's reputation. The communications portray Epstein, Wolff and Bannon as men who recognized the value of one another's information, access and influence, even as Epstein's history as a convicted sex offender was already publicly known.Steven Mnuchin's connection to Jean-Luc Brunel was more indirect and should not be overstated as a proven personal partnership. Corporate records listed Mnuchin as the official New York state contact for Next Management Corporation, a company formed by Jean-Luc and Arnaud Brunel, meaning his name was attached to receiving legal documents and handling official filings for the business. Mnuchin's representatives later said he did not remember meeting the Brunel brothers, had never done business with them and did not know why he had been listed in that role, although they acknowledged his longtime friendship with Faith Kates, who later co-founded Next Model Management with the Brunels. Jeffrey Epstein maintained close and mutually useful relationships with author Michael Wolff and political strategist Steve Bannon during the years after his 2008 conviction. Wolff conducted extensive interviews with Epstein and remained in contact with him while gathering material about Donald Trump, becoming both a chronicler of Epstein's world and, at times, an adviser on how Epstein might navigate mounting media scrutiny. Bannon's relationship appears to have gone even further, with the two men regularly exchanging political advice, arranging travel and discussing international contacts. Bannon also recorded hours of interviews with Epstein for a proposed documentary and privately described the project as media training aimed at pushing back against the trafficking allegations and rebuilding Epstein's reputation. The communications portray Epstein, Wolff and Bannon as men who recognized the value of one another's information, access and influence, even as Epstein's history as a convicted sex offender was already publicly known.Steven Mnuchin's connection to Jean-Luc Brunel was more indirect and should not be overstated as a proven personal partnership. Corporate records listed Mnuchin as the official New York state contact for Next Management Corporation, a company formed by Jean-Luc and Arnaud Brunel, meaning his name was attached to receiving legal documents and handling official filings for the business. Mnuchin's representatives later said he did not remember meeting the Brunel brothers, had never done business with them and did not know why he had been listed in that role, although they acknowledged his longtime friendship with Faith Kates, who later co-founded Next Model Management with the Brunels. Ralph speaks to historian Omer Bartov about his new book “Israel: What Went Wrong?” with special guest, international law expert Bruce FeinBruce Fein is a Constitutional scholar and an expert on international law. Mr. Fein was Associate Deputy Attorney General under Ronald Reagan and he is the author of Constitutional Peril: The Life and Death Struggle for Our Constitution and Democracy, and American Empire: Before the Fall.Many of the things that you describe in Israel apply in spades in the United States. We also have an administration that says we're being invaded militarily by Venezuela gangs, so we have to go kidnap their president and annex Venezuela. We've stated that Iran is an existential threat to the United States because at some future time, it's conceivable they may get one nuclear weapon. We have 5,000, Israel probably has 300 or 400. Or make the argument that we are being invaded by defenseless immigrants across the southern border. And it does seem to me that all countries—I don't think it's unique anyway to the United States or Israel, but it's generally true those in power are there to manufacture fear, to inflate fleas into elephants and say “My gosh, tomorrow the sky is falling down. We need to have national emergencies, rule by decree.” Everything is “an imminent danger”, the Communist domino theory. It's a very challenging issue. I say what you've described in Israel is not unique to Israel. We confront it every day right in the United States. And it works.Bruce FeinOmer Bartov is the Dean's Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Brown University. A historian, Professor Bartov was born on a kibbutz, grew up in Tel Aviv, and served in the Israel Defense Forces during the Yom Kippur War. He went on to become a leading scholar of the German army and the Holocaust, before turning his attention to his native country. His early research concerned the Nazi indoctrination of the Wehrmacht and the crimes it committed in World War II. He then turned to the links between total war and genocide and interethnic relations in the borderlands of Eastern Europe. His current interest is reflected in his recent books, Genocide, the Holocaust and Israel-Palestine: First-Person History in Times of Crisis, Israel: What Went Wrong?, and the forthcoming The Broken Promise: A Personal Political History of Israel and Palestine. The whole idea of creating a Jewish state (and it says so in the Proclamation of the State from May 1948) is that it would be a state for Jews—that it would be both Jewish and democratic. And that has proven to be not possible. A Jewish state can be both Jewish and democratic only if the overwhelming majority (if not all) of its citizens are Jews.Omer Bartov[Zionist zealots] believe that history is on their side—so in that sense, they are similar to Communists they're similar to Fascists they're similar to Nazis in that they believe that they can see the way forward, they know the logic of history, and the logic of history as they see it is on their side.Omer BartovIn Israel, since the 1980s (really since after the War of 1973, with the rise of the right wing in Israel in particular) the Holocaust has come to serve a particular purpose. Instead of being commemorated as an event that happened in the past that we should remember and commemorate and research, it's become a kind of image of an imminent danger to Israel. And the farther Israel has moved from the actual event of the Holocaust, and the more the Israeli army has become the military hegemon in its region, the more this alleged threat of an “Auschwitz around the corner” has been used by Israeli governments. Why has it been used? Because Israel actually needs to explain to itself and to its citizens: Why is it bossing it over millions of Palestinians? Half of the population under Israeli control are Palestinians. Two million are citizens, but they don't have equal rights, and the others have no rights at all (they're simply under arbitrary military rule). So how do you explain that? You explain that by telling your population and the rest of the world that those Palestinians—who have no power, who can never pose a threat to you—are an existential threat. And in Israel, that has worked quite well.Omer BartovBecause of the focus on Hebrew—to create Hebrew as a mother tongue for children whose mothers didn't speak Hebrew—because of that, there was a great antagonism towards speaking any other language. And the notion of having bilingual schools (that is, of having schools in Palestine where people would learn both Hebrew and Arabic, the language of the place) is not entertained by the vast majority of educators. Now, if you think about what would have been the result of having bilingual schools already in the 1920s and 30s, that children could speak each other's language and recognize each other's culture—that could have had a huge effect on how Zionism developed and how the state would have developed. But in today's Israel, the only bilingual population are the Palestinians. Palestinian citizens of Israel speak Arabic and Hebrew. Most Israelis don't speak Arabic. And most Israelis who trace themselves (quite large numbers) not to Europe, but to North Africa and the Middle East, where their parents and grandparents spoke Arabic (this was their language) have forgotten that language and were ashamed of their parents speaking it because it associated them with the Arabs. So the loss in this kind of creation of a nation around one language was the ability to imagine yourself as sharing the space with another group.Omer Bartov * Our top story concerns a progressive insurgent running in a must-win Senate race – and not the one you're thinking of. Late last week, Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed won the endorsement of Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The New York Times notes that this is AOC's first Senate endorsement of this cycle, coming just about a month ahead of the August 4th Michigan primary. El-Sayed is quoted saying that he is “honored for what her support says about what this campaign is building and what we're fighting for,” adding that he thinks that “too many establishment Democrats are…afraid that I will win.” He pointedly attacked Senator Chuck Schumer, charging that the Minority Leader “doesn't want to see me on the inside of the U.S. Senate,” because El-Sayed would “call out the kind of politics where we take money from corporations and AIPAC to run milquetoast campaigns and don't say anything about the problems that everyday people are facing.” El-Sayed has announced that he will campaign with AOC and Senator Bernie Sanders in Detroit, Lansing and Grand Rapids on July 18th and 19th, per MLive.* Another earthquake occurred in the Michigan Senate race on July 5th, when State Senator Mallory McMorrow announced that she would be withdrawing from the race – turning what was a competitive three-way race into a head-to-head between El-Sayed and the Democratic establishment pick, Congresswoman Haley Stevens. The Detroit Free Press notes that this announcement “comes after absentee ballots have already been mailed out to some voters and too late to remove her name from the primary ballot,” though voters are able to rescind their absentee votes and submit new ones up through Friday, July 24th. In a video statement, McMorrow maintained that “People are crying out for change and we need to listen.” McMorrow once led her opponents in this race but saw her support collapse and was trailing in a distant third place in recent polls. Rumor also had it that outgoing Senator Gary Peters was privately calling for her to exit the race so centrists could consolidate around Stevens. While many of her supporters are expected to go to Stevens, El-Sayed is energetically courting McMorrow's voters as well. The Detroit News reports McMorrow herself has announced that she will remain neutral in the remaining days of the primary, leaving her voters to vote their own consciences.* In more Michigan news, DSA-backed congressional candidate Donavan McKinney is running strong in his primary campaign against incumbent Congressman Shri Thanedar, whom McKinney has labeled “​​Detroit's own Elon Musk,” according to the New York Post. If McKinney pulls it off, he will join the growing group of DSA members in the House, along with Claire Valdez, Darializa Avila Chevalier and AOC from New York, Chris Rabb and Melat Kiros from Pennsylvania and Colorado respectively, and Rashida Tlaib from Michigan. Another candidate endorsed by his local DSA chapter, Kyle Blomquist, is running for Congress in Michigan but even if he wins his primary he is not expected to flip the deep red 1st congressional district.* In Missouri, Cori Bush has also won the support of DSA for her comeback congressional run against Wesley Bell, who defeated her in the 2024 primary, Andrew Solender reports. Bush had already won the support of her local DSA chapter, along with many other progressive organizations, and has been endorsed by Senator Bernie Sanders, Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, and former Congressman Jamaal Bowman. This week though, she won the support of the national DSA. In a statement, Bush wrote “I am honored to be once again endorsed by the Democratic [Socialists] of America as I campaign to return to Congress and keep building our movement to fight for economic justice, Medicare for All, abolishing ICE, and a world where everyday people have a real voice in our workplace's neighborhoods and society.” Bush also praised DSA for its “decades of organizing…[mobilizing] thousands of people across the country to demand an economy that works for all of us…[and] take on war profiteers, the for-profit healthcare industry, and the billionaire funded lobbies that subvert our democracy.” There has been little polling of this race, but what there has been appears to show the race in a statistical dead heat. One sign that Bush is being taken seriously is the new $865,000 ad buy taken out by the United Democracy Project, an AIPAC cutout.* Ironically, it would seem that American Jews have a more favorable view of the progressive left than Israel. According to the Forward, a new AP poll found that “44% of American Jews hold a favorable opinion of Zohran Mamdani, compared with 39% who view him unfavorably.” This is in contrast to the 32% of respondents who said they have a favorable opinion of Netanyahu and 59% who said they have a negative view of the Israeli PM. Perhaps more surprisingly, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, a “staunch supporter of Israel,” garnered only a 41% favorability rating, though far more respondents said they don't know enough about him to have an opinion than said they have a negative view.* Turning back to the Senate, the other major story this week of course is the fall of Graham Platner. Accusations of sexual assault, detailed in a POLITICO article, resulted in a deluge of opprobrium that cascaded upwards culminating in Platner's earliest and highest profile supporter, Senator Bernie Sanders, calling on him to drop out of the Senate race in Maine. In a video message released Wednesday, Platner stated that he would be suspending his campaign effective immediately, later telling staff that he plans to wait until Monday, the final possible day, to formally withdraw from the race, Axios reports. In the same video, Platner categorically denied the accusations calling them “all false,” and maintaining that the “things that have been claimed did not happen.” He implied that the scandal was orchestrated by “those in power“ who would “rather see Susan Collins win than have me be the next Senator from Maine.”* Platner's impending, late-stage withdrawal from the race has set off a chaotic blitz primary to replace him as the Democratic nominee. Numerous candidates have announced they are running including former Maine Senate president Troy Jackson, former Director of Maine's Center for Disease, Control and Prevention Nirav Shah, co-founder of Maine beer company Dan Kleban, Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows and state lawmaker Valli Geiger, along with Jordan Wood and Paige Loud, both of whom ran in the Maine second congressional district Democratic primary. The actual process for selecting a nominee has been the subject of debate – with many progressives arguing for caucuses – but POLITICO reports that by July 27th, “600 delegates must be selected,” including 500 from the state's 16 county parties, and these delegates will decide on a candidate to replace Platner via “an unprecedented nominating convention,” wherein all delegates come in unpledged to any candidate setting the stage for “what could be a raucous and unpredictable free-for-all.” It remains to be seen how this will all shake out, but it is notable that almost all of these candidates poll very strongly against Senator Susan Collins, with many polling higher than Platner ever did, while the Democratic Party's handpicked primary candidate, sitting Governor Janet Mills, still polls lower than Platner even since the scandal broke.* For our final Senate story, we turn to the senior Senator from Kentucky, Mitch McConnell. McConnell was recently found unconscious in his Washington, DC home and has been hospitalized since, and while Republican Senators and media figures like Scott Jennings claim to have spoken with him directly, his being sequestered away from the public has fueled rampant speculation about the severity of his condition and why it is being kept so secretive. Forbes reports that some figures on the right, including Steve Bannon, are “suggesting the Republican establishment is shielding the state of McConnell's health from the public to allow him to remain in office long enough to avoid [Kentucky Congressman Thomas] Massie running for his seat.” Former Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene told TMZ, “Thomas Massie would make a great senator.” The Hill reports that Andy Beshear, the Democratic Governor of Kentucky, sent a letter to McConnell's Senate office strongly requesting an update on the Senator's health, noting that “Over the last several weeks, Kentuckians have grown increasingly concerned about the health and well-being of Sen. McConnell,” and that “Allowing speculation to continue in the media is not fair to the Senator or to Kentuckians, and my hope is that this provides him the opportunity to share the information in a transparent manner, direct from the source.”* In more positive news, AP reports former Wisconsin judge Hannah Dugan, who helped an immigrant escape ICE by ushering him through her jury room door was spared prison time in her sentencing this week. After the incident in her court room, Dugan was convicted of felony obstruction in what was widely seen as a political trial designed to exact retribution on behalf of the Trump administration. Dugan resigned her circuit judgeship under this assault; in her resignation letter, she warned that this prosecution threatened “the independence of our judiciary.” Dugan was fined $5,000.* Finally, in spiritual news, a story in the National Catholic Reporter recounts how Pope Leo XIV excommunicated thousands of clergy and followers of the far right, schismatic group, the Society of St. Pius X. While bishops and priests are judged prima facie schismatic for their consecration in the Society, lay followers of the sect will be judged schismatic if they consciously choose “adherence to the society over obedience to the pope,” and “exclusive participation in Lefebvrian ‘ecclesial' acts, without taking part in the acts of the Catholic Church,” a reference to the group's founder, Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre. The proximate cause of this excommunication was the Society creating four new bishops in open defiance of Pope Leo, essentially daring the Church to act. “Someone said, oh, you look like Steve Bannon, and I love you for that… No, I just shaved my hair and lost some pounds.” — Kaya Genç on Trumpism's global fanbase The NATO circus rumbled into the Turkish capital of Ankara this week resembling more of a gun show than an alliance summit. Ringmaster Donald J. Trump promised Recep Tayyip Erdoğan the F-35s and lifted the very sanctions that Trump himself had imposed. Erdogan handed out pistols to the assembled leaders — with poor old Keir Starmer (no Winston Churchill) leaving his at the airport. And observing all these clowns from Istanbul was the Turkish novelist and essayist Kaya Genç. As a contributor to the anthology How We See It: The World Looks at America in the Age of Trump, Genç is a keen America watcher. He first set foot in the United States in January 2017, stumbling into New York City's protests against Trump 1.0's Muslim-ban. What seemed temporary — Trump as a bizarre historical aberration — looked to Erdogan-literate Kaya Genç like an operating manual for 21st century populist authoritarianism. Turkey, Genç argues, has spent a century Americanizing itself. First with the 20th century Marshall Plan, the highways, the Hilton hotels, and finally an American-style executive presidency operating on the politics of referendum. Now, he says, the whole world — from Turkey to France and Britain — is living with the consequences of 21st century Americanization. Like a more functional NATO, right-wing populists operate like an international alliance. Erdogan, Trump, Meloni, Le Pen and Farage are like a club in which projecting strength at summits buys impunity at home. And this club has a house style. Turkish right-wing columnists, Genç reports, deploy Michael Corleone on their X banners — exactly David Thomson's warning earlier this week about Hollywood's glorification of on-screen violence. So, in a way, America observers like Kaya Genç got a sneak preview of Trump's America in movies like The Godfather. First as cinema, then as life. From both Turkey and Russia with love. Five Takeaways •       NATO: The Club of the Mighty. The night before the summit, activists were rounded up in Ankara — LGBTQ rights defenders, labor unionists, journalists — as threats to NATO security. In Turkish civil society, Genç explains, NATO doesn't represent the liberal world order; it represents the mighty, and has since the writers of the 1960s. The summit itself was a military passion show: jets overhead, revolvers gifted among the attendees, and a host country whose ruling politicians no longer hide that arms exports — including the drones Ukraine used so effectively — are now the mission of the Turkish economy. •       Trump: A Star Among Right-Wing Voters Everywhere. In India, a chubbier, longer-haired Genç was once told: you look like Steve Bannon, and I love you for that. The Turkish media savaged Biden but forgives Trump everything — Netanyahu is the villain of the Turkish press, while Trump speaks the language. Not Turkish (though he tried a phrase): the language of the presidential system. The Turkish right's America has always been selective — yes to the death penalty and gun ownership, no to labor rights, free expression, and the trans movement — an instinct as old as the poet Mehmet Akif Ersoy's advice to copy Germany's industriousness and leave out the decadence. •       Living the Consequences of Americanization. Turkey began its republic in the 1920s on the European model — parliament, proportional voices for an ethnically diverse country. After the Marshall Plan, it re-forged itself on the American one: highways, Hilton hotels, burger joints, and eventually an American-style executive presidency, approved by referendum over the objections of people like Genç. That's why Trump 1.0 read so differently in the two countries: in New York it looked like an exception to be fought off; in Ankara it looked like how American politics works — and something to imitate. •       Populists Learn Like Large Language Models. Did Erdogan create the model, or is Trump teaching Erdogan? Neither, says Genç: it's a dialogue — right-wing populism learning from itself the way AI learns from language models. The AKP ran a Gramscian culture war through the institutions; Meloni, Le Pen, and Farage apply the cosmetic soft brush that makes fascist-rooted politics presentable. Join the club, project strength at the summit, and whatever you do domestically stops mattering. Putin, notably, is not in the curriculum: Turkey is returning its S-400s to get the F-35s, and Russia is becoming a footnote. •       The Hologram and the Pushback. Ekrem Imamoglu — the Istanbul mayor Genç profiles in The Dial as the hologram candidate — won the city with socialist municipalism, and the skeptics who warned it would alienate the pious were simply wrong. Soft liberalism, the faith Genç himself held since the nineties, is disappearing; the pushback is finding its heroes in dead poets — Rosa Luxemburg, and Sevgi Soysal, whose novel Walking is out in English from New York Review Books.
