Driving for Your Success with Sheevaun Moran

Everyone Sheevaun here driving for your success -- today's topic is chaos to clarity, one of the very common things about any entrepreneur who wants a great big impact and and a lot of influence and even more income. Is there's a lot of chaos, there's a lot of Chaos in their mind, there's a lot of Chaos in their energy, there's a lot of chaos that crops up every step of the way and it's been one of the things I've spoken about in a signature way for many many years because energetic chaos is something that you can't see but you can sense and it affects you and how you remember your why. Your real purpose, your real Vision, your mission and it affects who you are and how you engage with the rest of the world. So if you're different with family then you are with your business folks or in community whatever,if you're different in each different place then you're going to create chaos and the key thing about chaos is I think they're like a mind set, meaning there is a whole way of thinking and being and doing and having that you didn't know needed to be shifted but the results that you're getting aren't matching up with what you know you have is your vision your mission your goal and your opportunity. So inner chaos is something that you'll do on accident as Habit to prevent you from getting bigger from taking more steps from advancing yourself from staying in growth opportunities from staying in conversations that are going to help you uplift and expand and flourish and have a big impact. And chaos is where you'll say one thing yet do another you'll commit to something yet you'll get busy doing something else or you'll get angry at somebody who should know better and the fact of the matter is they just need to be up-leveled and they're playing into your chaos. So your energy is creating more chaotic energy around you if you tend to overwrite meaning complicate your words and your sentences and and your thoughts when you write, then you're in chaos internally and inner chaos also is when you have the "Well if this happens then I'll be done, when this occurs I'll be there," The one and done thing is dangerous especially for inner chaos and then another thing that that happens with inner chaos is complaining you'll get into a habit a pattern an attitude a a way of being about complaining about little things and those little complaints create bigger chaotic internal mechanisms, fear, worry, anxiety, tension, stress, frustration, Etc. So that inner chaos really needs to be cleaned up in order for the outer results to yield a great big shift. Whether More Money, More Better Health, more impact -- all of those things rely upon how much you're cleaning up your inner chaos. tThis inner chaos is the key y'all and so maybe you have moments of Peace, but the rest of you is in turmoil so that inner chaos is stirring up because of old habits and programming and so one of the ways we solve this here at energetic Solutions in my company and what I do when I help entrepreneurs is deal with that inner chaos and really deal with it in unknown ways, different ways than everybody else is doing it. Why? Because if we deal with the energy and the mind and all of the inner messaging in a very unique way then it actually gets disrupted so that you can flourish and Thrive and get to your goal faster. So if you want to solve that inner chaos just raise your hand and start admitting that you have it and that you're doing it to yourself. That's step one and step two is maybe reach out to us at energetic Solutions sheevaunmoran.com and there's some cool stuff on the site that you can take a quiz and you can find out where you are in your inner chaos game of business um so go to sheevaunmoran.com.   Unleash Your Business Prosperity Through Love   More Epic Tools: For more of these articles, rule breakers, energetic solutions or concepts, for more ease and grace in your life or business, connect with me at http://sheevaunmoran.com. TThis may seem like a strange passage for Easter Sunday - but that is why I have highlighted the key term from verse 16 and 18 - -And the LORD raised up judges.---In the Greek translation of the Old Testament, the same word -egeiro- is used that is used in the New Testament for all the passages that speak of how God raised Jesus from the dead.--In one sense, Judges is not speaking of being raised from the dead - these judges are -raised up- in order to deliver Israel from their foes.--Indeed, the problem in our chapter is that these judges keep dying - and so their being -raised up- is only a temporary fix.--But there is another sense in which it is a sort of -resurrection.- Because the wages of sin is death. Israel's rebellion ends in death and exile.- -We need a judge - we need a deliverer who will be raised up - never to die again- And we need one who will change our hearts - who will raise us up - that we might live before him-

TThis special edition of Stand Up & Speak Up this week is with Debby Montgomery Johnson and her mom, Gwendolyn Kennedy Butz. If you could have your mom's undivided attention for an hour, what would you ask her? What was life like when she was a little girl? Who taught her to cook? Where were the holidays spent and with whom? Who did the dishes? Did your mom REALLY ever talk about life as a young adult? What were her joys and times of sadness? Did she work outside of the home or was she a SAHM? My folks have been married since 1955 and they're fortunately still happy, healthy, and of sound mind. Too many of my friends are realizing they can't ever get that hour with mom back either because she's passed (transitioned beyond the veil) or is living with diminished memories. I wanted to let my mom SHINE and for once in her life be the center of MY attention and she was and I'm so grateful. I encourage you all to ask the questions you've never asked (within reason!) and then LISTEN to the gems that will come out. Our Women of Wisdom (WOW, MOMs upside down!) are aging, as are we, and there is so much to learn. All in all, life goes by too quickly and don't you want to know who was the FAVORITE child!!! ___ Alf Hi Arianna, you are both the European Commission's Spokeperson for competition and for Eurostat. But I don't think Eurostat makes many news at all, does it?   Arianna Podesta   No, Eurostat produces really a lot of statistics, clearly, and a lot of information. But usually, the information that comes from us feeds into the press releases of my colleagues following specific thematic areas in the Spokesperson's Service of the Commission.    So usually, if you want to have information on employment, that will be the employment spokesperson that deals with that topic, or you have, I don't know, information on hotel occupancy, then it's the spokesperson that deals with tourism and internal market that will usually use those figures in her communication.    So for me, it's really the questions that relate to your stats, working choices how the about statistics are calculated, etc. But indeed, I mean, the vast majority of what I do is competition related. Yes.   Alf   So, as we've spoken on the emails, the main idea is to get a glance of how the Competition Commission works, and how an investigation starts. And then, in the end, I would like to go a bit in detail about the tech competition investigations, specifically about Apple on the App Store and the payments and so on.    Arianna Podesta   Yeah, of course. I mean, I'm very happy to try to answer all of your questions. I hope I have all the all the answers. And indeed, if there's anything I cannot do not know or I cannot say, I will just tell you that I cannot say but I will always try to provide you as much context or process information as I can.   Alf   Okay, because it's not very often that you do these kind of interviews. Is that right? am I the lucky one?   Arianna Podesta   One, Yyou're one of the few lucky ones. Meaning that we are quite restricted in terms of what we can say, especially on ongoing cases.    I think it's understandable because the matters we deal with are so market sensitive.    Of course, what we what we do affects companies. So I talked to a lot of your colleagues, but usually, it's majority of time on background, which means we have a very informal testexchange.    I, you know, explain the context, but you won't quote or you won't use it directly in your articles. Is more to give the context and there, it's a bit easier to pass, you know, messages and to say where we stand oin things.   I have limits, clearly, as far as interviews go. Because whenever we have an important case, or an important decision, or an important piece of legislation, usually we have the Eexecutive Vvice pPresident [Margrethe Vestager] coming to the pressroom herself.    So generally, she answers the questions there and we'll media get the feedback they need. And of course, she also gives several interviews not maybe on one specific topic, but where she will answer with state of play [on policy or on cases]. So generally, the on the record information is given by her and less by me.   Alf   I understand. As I said, there are so many topics that we would like to discuss about what are you doing to foster competitive environments in the European Union,  the EU. But for today, I would like to focus on the tech related ones. But first, let's learn a bit how the Commission works.    Just as a general question, how many people do work in the commission?   Arianna Podesta   So let's start with the first one. In general, the commission is a very big institution, if you look at the number of people working for it.    I believe that it's about 32,000 people working for the Commission. Of course, this includes policy officers, researchers, lawyers, translators, etc.    It looks very big, 32,000 people. But on the other hand, if you think that we, you know, follow 27 Member States, then actually, this number is, relative to the work we carry out, to all the legislative proposals we mtake, and of course, also to the competition decisions we take., and tThe DG competition Directorates, which is the competition specific one, hasit's about 900 to 1,000 people working in it.   Alf   And I suppose there are people from all over the countries, the different countries that you cover, I believe.   Arianna Podesta   Yes, indeed. You're absolutely right.    So first of all, one of the core principles of the Treaty [on the Functioning of the European Union] is not to discriminate on the basis of nationality.    So on the one hand, you need to ensure that there i's no discrimination in terms of the country you come from.    On the other hand, it' is also important for the Ccommission to have a balance between the different nationalities not to have countries, you know, over -represented or under-represented.    So it's always a mix, but you will have officials from the 27 Mmember Sstates working in the various policy areas.   Alf   And is everyone working on the headquarters? Or do you have different offices in different countries?   Arianna Podesta   So, the majority of colleagues will be here in Brussels, the vast majority.    However, there are colleagues in the various Mmember Sstates that to work in the representations of the Ccommission to the various Mmember Sstates; we alsowill have colleagues in delegations.    So, the EU has delegations in third countries, outside our Uunion. And we also have a number of agencies that are part of our framework, and these agencies are located in various Mmember Sstates.    So again, not all here, but the vast majority in Brussels, I would say,   Alf   And in Competition, how many people do work.   Arianna Podesta   As I was mentioning, it should be around 900 to 1,000 people working in DG competition directly., Tthen, of course, that i's the core but also when you work in DG competition, you will work with a number of other colleagues and in other services, for example, the legal service that ensures the legal certainty soundness in the decisions we take and we cooperate a lot with them. And translators as an examples. So of course, it i's it's a collective effort, also for our [comeptition] cases as well.   Alf   And when an issue appears, how is it distribute the work? How do you distribute the work? I mean, you as you said, you need legal, and you need insurance and you need whatever... borders... , how do the teams are assigned to a specific task?   Arianna Podesta   You mean only relating to competition, I imagine?   So we can look into into a moment into how cases come up, but let's say we have a competition case.    Usually it will be assigned to a team working in DG competition. The DG , that competition has a clear structure.    So, there's case teams working on different topics, in different units, according to the different instruments.    So Tto give you an example, we will have merger units dealing with the mergers in the field of transports, then you will have Sstate aid units dealing with they didn'tcases in the field of transport.    And the same for antitrust matters. And the same goes for other topics, such as.    I don't know financial services, media, what else services of general economic interest, etc.    So you will have this variety and there's going to be a case team assigned, which will really look into the matter.    However, even if one service - and in this case, it i's DG competition - is responsible for a specific policy area, the decisions taken by the Commission are Ccollegeial decisions.    So they involve all the Ccollege which is composed of 27 Ccommissioners., Tand they need to go through a process of approval by the other relevant Directorates, or Ccommissioned departments if you want.    I was mentioning, for example, the legal service but of course, there's many, many others. And this process is called interservice consultation.    So before a decision is adopted by the Ccollege, all services will be consulted and involved.   Alf   Just to make sure that I get it right. When you say DG competition, do you mean digital competition?   Arianna Podesta   No. DG means Directorate General. Sorry, the Directorate General, for competition, is the [Commission's] department for competition. We call it DG Ccompetition.    If you were asking about the digital competitiondepartment, we call it DG Connect. We have names for all the various departments basically.   Alf   And how is the competition commission structure? I mean, I believe this, the head is the Commissioner, which is Margaret Vestager. And how it spreads down?   Arianna Podesta   So you will have Eexecutive vvice ppresident with is Vestager, who' Is the ccommissioner responsible for competition. She i's a part of the members of the Ccollege, who isare appointed with a mandate of five years.    And they work together with President [Ursula] von der Leyen.    And, of course, she has a structure behind it, which will be her cabinet.    And then you have the service, which is the Director General for competition, as we were saying., and tThere you will have a structure of officials that work together with the Director General Olivier Guersent.    Below him, you will have three Deputy Director Ggenerals for the different instruments -, so one for antitrust, one for mergers, one for Sstate aids.    And below them, you will have an entire structure of Directorates, and case units that reports to Olivier and to Commissioner Vestager.   Alf   All the way to the 1000 people   Arianna Podesta   All the way to the 1000 people.    Alf   Now getting into matters. How does the competition committee start an investigation? Does it do you need to have someone to present a request or you can start things autonomously?   Arianna Podesta   We have three types of instruments in the competition world.    One is sState aid. And of course, it has its own procedures.  A second one is mergers. So we look at transactions like mergers and acquisitions.  And the third one, which is the one I think you're most interested in, it's antitrust and cartels.    In this instrument, cases can have a number of different origins.  So we can have complaints. A competitor usually will come to us and will signal that he believes that there is an issue in a given market, possibly caused by a specific behavior of a specific company, and it will provide us with evidence to support the claim. We will assess this service information as evidence and we will, you know, decide whether to really open an investigation or, or or not.    And this is one way in which we can start looking into something.   A second way is the whistleblower tool. So it's this is someone who, let's say more informally, contacts us., Oof course, this whistleblower can request anonymity, it's very, very frequent with whistleblowers cases, signaling that there may be an issue in his or her opinion, his or her opinion, in a given market and there we can decide again to give it a closer look or not.    A third way we can decide on our own initiative to look into into a market because we ourselves supported suspect there might be something that is not perfectly working in a given market. And we want to take a closer look.    And another way is a leniency application from a participant to a cartel. So for cartel cases - cartels is where two or more companies collude to get a gain, and usually, you know, to at the expenses of competitors, suppliers, clients, etc. And it is illegal to have these types of arrangements.    One of the participants to the cartel can decide to come to us and apply for leniency. So basically self-denouncing himself and the cartel saying to the Ccommission: I have participated to this cartel and I provide you with information.    The first one who applies for leniency gets the benefit of not having to pay a fine. So the leniency tool is a very useful one to detect cartels, of course.   Alf   Ahá. And when someone complains, do they have to bring some proof of what they are saying, or the just the complain is enough to start an investigation?   Arianna Podesta   Well, I mean, it i's in the interest of the complainant to provide us with as much information as possible for us to look into a case.    When a complaint comes to us, they usually want us to investigate a given market and the more evidence they give us, the easier they make our job and the more likely it is that we will actually have a case leadif indeed, there is an issue.    So yes, generally, complainants substantiate their claims with some degree of evidence. Of course, if we don't consider it sufficient, we can, you know, either ask the complainant for more information, if he has it. Or we can also decide: yes, this merits a closer look. And we can ask the market for more information.   Alf   And once you start an investigation, is it done by your own people? Or do sometimes you require external investigators or lawyers or whatever is needed to conduct the investigation?   Arianna Podesta   Well, usually it's us that carry out the investigations. We have a number of rights that are derived from Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union.    In particular, if you want to be very precise, articles one and 101 and 102 of the Ttreaty.    And they giave us the right, as I was saying, to request companies for information, but also - in the context of an inspection -, to enter the premises of a company, to examine records, to talk with managers, etc, etc.    So we have all these powers. And it's us that usually carry out all these processes.    For example, we have also an IT forensic unit who are specialists in IT forensics, as, of course, the world is becoming more and more digital. So it's a unit thatof clearly plays a role in some of our investigations.    They We cooperate sometimes with different authorities to get as much information as possible, for example, prosecutors, police, etc, or those who monitor tenders, to name a few.    Who we cooperate with that is usually the national competition authorities, because, you know, we are the European Commission, and then you have national competition authorities in the Mmember Sstates.    And we cooperate with them, for example, in the context of an investigation or in the context of a case.    And this is regulated through the European Competition network, which is a forum where we ensure that there's an efficient use of resources.    And there is really a flow of information between the authorities, where needed. Sso we will inform each other about the cases that we a're carrying out.    And we will eventually talk about the decisions we will be taking both from our side and the side of the Mmember Sstates.   Alf   And the fines are, how do I say it, established? The fines in proportion of whatever it's being investigated? Or it's something that is decided on a case by case system.   Arianna Podesta   The fines have a maximum. The fines we impose, being the Commission, have a maximum level which is 10% of the annual global turnover of a company.    So this to say is really the maximum possible. However, they will be commensurated to the specific case and conduct.    Alf   Of the global turnover, not European turnover, but global.   Arianna Podesta   10% of the annual growth global turnover that a company generates,. hHowever, they will be proportionate.    So we will evaluate case by case, depending on how serious the breach is, you know, on the duration of the infringement as well and a number of other factors., Aas I was saying, leniency -, if the company has applied for leniency be it for first or for second, etcetera.    If the company has cooperated, we will give a reduction as well, because, you know, if we start going to a company and the company decides, this is (I'm talking about cartels specifically) that it will cooperate and provide us evidence, it saves our time as well, so we will reduce the fine.   In antitrust investigations that are not cartel related, let's say that, at the end of an investigation, there's three possible outcomes.    First type of outcome is that we have really looked into it a. And in the end, we decide that there's no issue. It's a possibility, of course.    Second situation is that the company says, Yes, I see why you believe that there has been an anticompetitive behaviorbehaviour a. And I offer commitments., Sso the companies will offer us commitments to solve our competition concerns.    And there, we will make these commitments binding on the company to make sure that this behavior does not happen again.    And third case is [a] fine. So there again, we can decide to impose a fine on the company up to the 10% threshold, that I was mentioning. Perhaps I can give you some of the highest fines. Just to give you an idea of the total antitrust fines that we gave, could that be of interest for you?   Alf   Yeah, I've seen a graphic that you shared on Twitter. And I see that in 2021, total fines were by 1.7 billion.   Arianna Podesta   Yes, that was 2021. If we look at the 10, or well, I won't tell you the 10 biggest cases, but looking at the biggest cases in terms of fines, the biggest one was the Google Android case from 2018, where the fine was 4.3 billion.    Just to give you a proportion., and tThat's the biggest we had, and then that you know,it proportionately reduces, as I was saying., Iit really depends also on the turnover of the company.    And we have the Google search case, which is the shopping one, we have the Google AdSense on advertising, we have Intel, Qualcomm, and then going down to the others.    Alf   And how do companies pay? Do they make a wire transfer, or they put a check? How these works?   Arianna Podesta   So first of all, whenever we take a decision, companies have a right to appeal. This is very important.    Of course, they can always go to the EU courts, and appeal all of our decisions if they don't agree with the outcomes.    Generally, if it's a commitment decision, they have offered commitments, so hopefully, they will not appeal.    But if it's a finingal decision, that's a possibility, they have a right to do so.    In the EU, we have two courts. So the first level is thea Ggeneral Ccourts. And after that decision is taken [by the General Court], either the company or us can appeal this first decision to the European Court of Justice.    And that's the second level.    wWhile this process is carried out, so we know if there's an appeal ongoing, the companies fined can either make a provisional payment in an account or they can give us financial guarantees.    So we need to make sure that the fines are covered.    Once the decision is final, meaning that there's no more appeal possibility,  either because they haven't appealed from the start or because we have carried out the entire process, then the money flows into the budget of the Ccommission, reducing the contributions from Mmember Sstates.    So, Mmember Sstates have to give a certain amount of money to the Union per year to the commission and these fines that we collect proportionately reduced the contribution of all Mmember Sstates.   Alf   Okay, so that answers the gossip question about where do money go, once it gets into [the EU account]. So the states have to pay less? If yes, if you have a lot of activity and you find a lot of companies...   Arianna Podesta   Yes, meaning it i's to the benefit of the citizens in the end, of course, because the money that Mmembers States did give, you know, comes also from taxes, when. At the end is ait is the  taxing contribution by citizens that is reduced to citizens.    And it compensates the harm that has been suffered in the market because of the distortion of competition created by the company abusing, for example, its dominant position or, you know, entering into agreements that it shouldn't have entered into.    That's the idea, but of course, before we take decisions, we are very sure from a legal perspective, and we take decisions that are very much needed for the level playing field in the market.    And clearly, we have the Ccourts overseeing all of our decisions and activities. So there's a nice balance there.   Alf   Before we move into another topic, is there something that we should know about how the Commission works, how the competitive department works?   Arianna Podesta   In particular,  I find it that having worked there, I find it is a very motivating service, because you really have a sense of how much you're doing to protect the European market and the companies that operate in the European market, and the citizens that are part of our markets.    So you really feel the effects of what you do. And you have a lot of motivation and on why you do it. So I think it's very rewarding to work in this department.,   Alf   You are working for the better good for everyone, here.    Now, we move into the Apple case that it's been going on for quite a long time now.    In the document, it said that the investigation was started because of a complain by Spotify, and from an unknown ebook seller, which I found it curious, because usually it's always on the app or games or even music market.    But it doesn't seem like the book market is something that Apple is relevant, as of now. It's not a very big platform compared with the competition like Amazon or some others, right? Or even Google?   Arianna Podesta   Well, it's two different cases, first of all.   So one is the case on music streaming, as you were rightly mentioning, and that was brought forward by a complaint by Spotify.    And there, it's an investigation we have opened in June 2020.    And tThere we are more advanced, meaning that last year, on 30th of April, we have actually sent to Apple a sStatement of Oobjections.    A Sstatement of Oobjections is a document which that is sent to companies in the context of an ongoing investigation, basically giving our preliminary view on what aspects we believe the company has distorted competition on.    So on the Spotify complaint, we have, you know, really advanced in the investigation., Bbecause we believe there is an issue in the App Store.   And here, in particular, on the way Apple's music streaming [works].    So Apple Music competes with other companies, such as Spotify, and - if you want - we can go in more detail there.    And then indeed, you are right. In June 2020, we have opened a second investigation in the eBook market. Tthere we have received a complaint from another competitor.    Here competitors can decide to remain anonymous, it's a right they have, but it needs to be justified.    For example, Iif you fear (just in general, not in relation to the specific case), but they could feel that there could be retaliation from the company youthey're complaining about.    So if they have reasons to want to maintain the anonymous status, they can do.    And this is why we can say Spotify complaint on one, while and on the other one, we can just say that it was an ebook provider and. Tthere what we are were looking at is I mean, it's quite similar but in different markets.    We're really looking into the way the App Store works. So we are taking issues with the in-app purchase system, how it works., Yyou know, that Apple charges 30% commission's on all subscription fees through this in- app purchase system.    And second issue we're looking into is the restrictions on alternative purchase possibilities.    So Apple does not let these competing apps publicize on the app the possibility of buying the services elsewhere, for example, from their website. And these are the two aspects that we are looking into.   Alfonso Tejedor   Yes, if I recall correctly from the emails we've been exchanging the past months, you were expecting Apple's answer by the end of last year to that document that you sent them in April? Has Apple answered it yet?   Arianna Podesta   I would need to check for that. I have to say the truth is I haven't heard the latest. So there would have to check and I'm happy to get back to you on that.   Alfonso Tejedor   But Apple has a period of time to answer, right?   Arianna Podesta   Yes, I mean, the fact that we send a Sstatement of Oobjections gives Apple the possibility to reply to our observations, to say why it, perhaps, doesn't agree with the competition concerns that we have raised., Iit also gives Appleoes access to the file, so it gives Apple the possibility to really see the evidence collected and the basis for the concerns.    And it also gives Apple the possibility of being heard. So there i's, you know, there' is a hearing organized with the company involved in which they can make their case and explain to us. It's really a dialog phase. Now I would have to check on whether we have received a reply or not.    And then, basically, what happens is, again, we will assess the information, we will eventually revert to the market, etc. And this leads at a certain point to a final decision by the Commission., Aas I was saying before, three types of outcomes are possible.    Perhaps important to note is that in antitrust investigations, we don't have deadlines. So we can really take the time we need to build a strong case, in one way direction or the other, before we adopt the decision.   Alfonso Tejedor   I have, and I believe many people have, a hard time to understand that in the real world, whenever we enter in a big warehouse or any kind of store, we don't see a product having an advertising saying "buy these in another place, which is cheaper".    And I believe the App Store, it's Apple's App Store. So we don't understand why they should allow to advertise on the apps that are sold on the App Store that they can it can be bought or upgraded, or whatever, cheaper in another place. That is something that doesn't happen in the real world.   Arianna Podesta   Well, first of all, let me let me just explain a general concept perhaps that can be of interest:, we don't have an issue with, you know, a company being big, or a company being successful., Tthis is absolutely fine.    What is important for us and is that this size, or power, is not abused, to the detriment of the market and of consumers, ultimately.   In the case of Apple, iPhone and iPad users are very loyal to Apple.    And when they start using their systems, they tend to continue using all of their products that are linked to the system. So there's a high degree of realization risk of clients being locked-in.

So…try telling a bumble bee that!nnIsn't it wonderful that bumble bees don't possess human traits? Because if they did, in all likelihood, we would live in a world devoid of flowers and honeycomb and the simple delights of bumble bees productively going about their business in our garden.nnWhy? Because we human beings have a knack for getting caught up in limiting self beliefs, so it follows that the bulk of us would simply accept the word of the scientific community and not fly because we've been told we can't! nnAnd like the imaginary void that would be created without the ingenuity of bumble bees, we create huge voids in our life by accepting self-limiting beliefs.nnOur beliefs about ourselves, those around us and the world at large affect who we are and how we behave. Beliefs are merely thoughts, that with a little encouragement and repetition from our over-active minds, transform into facts. Or so we are led to believe. nnOnce we have formed a self-limiting belief, we continue to pursue evidence to prove that our belief is real. These beliefs are backed up by our self-talk, providing further evidence to back up our negative thoughts.nnHow many times have you caught yourself saying:nn•tI knew I'd be no good at this.n•tThis always happens to me – I'm hopeless.n•tI'm always the unlucky one.n•tI'll never be any good at anything. n•tI can't ask for referrals.n•tI'm not built for following a calendar.n•tI can't seem to stop letting things distract me.n•tI have to spend too much time on lower priorities because they need to get done.nnLimiting beliefs are self-perpetuating; the more we believe something to be so, the more our actions reflect that belief, and the more the resultant failure to achieve what we originally set out to do reinforces the initial limiting belief.nnSo, how do we break the vicious cycle of self-limiting beliefs and create more positive outcomes?nn6 Step Plan to Break the Cycle of Limiting BeliefsnnThe first step in breaking the cycle of self-limiting beliefs is recognizing that the belief exists.nnThis can often be difficult because many of our limiting beliefs stem from early childhood experiences, or are so deeply ingrained into our psyche that we aren't consciously aware of them.nnFor example, you may have been told over and over as a child that you'd “never amount to anything” because you didn't get your homework in on time.nnOver the ensuing years, you've lived a mediocre life, settling for whatever life has thrown at you because you don't believe you are capable of anything better.nnSo, let's look at a series of exercises that will disprove your long-held belief and create a whole new world of opportunities.nn1.tWrite down your self-limiting belief. Writing is an integral part of the process because it shifts your focus from the maze of random thoughts associated with the right side of the brain to the more analytical, logical left hemisphere.nn2.tUsing the above example, the self-limiting belief might be: “I will never amount to anything.”nn3.tDescribe the self-talk that is associated with the belief: “I am useless.” “I am a waste of space.” “I don't deserve to be successful.”nn4.tRecord all the limitations your belief creates: “I am unfulfilled.” “I get no enjoyment from life.” “I am frustrated by my inability to get ahead.”nn5.tWrite down the new positive self-talk that opposes the self-limiting belief: “I am capable of great things.” “I can be successful.” “I am a good person.”nn6.tImagine yourself with the new positive belief and describe your feelings when you think about it: “I feel happy and content with my life.” “I feel posiSupport the show

Setting Healthy Boundaries & Allowing Ourselves To Feel Sadness // Episode #18   Things haven't been 'normal' for many of us over the past year but we have all been transforming and growing. Recently I had a sad day, and this was OK, I allowed my self to feel the sadness, the sadness that I miss my partner. But instead of turning the sad day into a sad week or month I knew this low energy wouldn't last. A high vibe day was on its way and this low energy was temporary. This is why having strong healthy boundaries in important, because when we are in lower energy frequencies it is easier to be triggered. Our boundaries can be tested in these times, as mine where this week. It isn't selfish to have those healthy boundaries in place. When we say no to others we are saying yes to ourselves.    So where you can find me, the best place in Instagram - @motherearthhealerpippa My website has lots of goodies and fun stuff to check out too - www.motherearthrising.co.uk Join our Facebook group 'Ditching The Toxic EGO', a group where you can safely explore your triggers and work on that toxic EGO - JOIN HERE.   How you can work with me? Cutting Energetic Cords & Happy New Year // Episode #13   Happy New Year wonderful souls. Thank you for listening to me throughout 2020. I am thrilled to be back with some amazing episodes coming up and new interviews. Today I am chatting about cutting energetic ties. It seems to be the theme this week, so I decided to address it in today's episode. Whenever we face difficult situations, come out of bad relationships, get triggered, or meet negative people, we will form cords to that person. Good and bad. But these cords can stay attached to us, causing our energy to dip and relive these situations. It is important to do cord cutting as much as you can until you feel the release of the negative cords. Below I have attached some of the meditations I have used. I will be releasing my own cord cutting meditation very soon, so watch out for that. Enjoy guys, and I would love to hear about your cord cutting journeys.    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKS3UWoDJfk&t=138s   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Z-jU9Blxmw&t=126s   So where you can find me, the best place in Instagram - @motherearthhealerpippa My website has lots of goodies and fun stuff to check out too - www.motherearthrising.co.uk   How you can work with me? Listening to Nature and Connecting Back to The Natural World // Episode #12   Two women in love with nature chatting about the importance of connecting back to the natural world. Tigrilla has so much incredible knowledge about the natural world, she blows me away with her energy and love for life. Sometimes we forget to connect to nature because we are indoors and not fully present. Especially in the colder climates. But we encourage you to get outside. Get some real life plants in the house. Make friends with those plants as you would your pets. They to want to connect with you. Enjoy this beautiful episode.    About Tigrilla - Fascinated by nature since her earliest memories, Tigrilla Gardenia turned that passion into her vocation. Her journey began in a polyethnic childhood. She earned a degree in music and electrical engineering, entering the high-tech corporate world via RealNetworks and Microsoft in the early days of the internet. The desire to escape the confines of the corporate world proved too strong, and Tigrilla soon began following her own spiritual path. She co-owned a circus, produced intentional dance events, taught Kabbalah, and even toured with Cirque du Soleil. Today, she works as a Nature-Inspired Leadership Mentor and studies Plant Intelligence and the Effects of Plant Music on Human Health. Tigrilla has the honor of being a Damanhur citizen in Italy — one of the largest spiritual eco-communities in the world. Her roots are firmly planted in the arts, communication, and the avant-garde. Tigrilla uses her expertise to empower mission-driven leaders to achieve personal and professional success by integrating nature-inspired innovation in order to bring meaning to Life and make an impact with work. She is an influential speaker and mentor, running courses and workshops on reconnection with the plant kingdom. Always eager to learn, she studied with some of the greatest minds in bio-inspired sciences, gaining a masters degree in Futuro Vegetale (Vegetal Future): plants, social innovation, design under Stefano Mancuso, University of Florence. She has also studied Biomimicry for Social Innovation and Product Development. Tigrilla is a World Ambassador for Plant Intelligence and champions connection to nature as the basis for long-term health, happiness, and success.   Find Tigrilla on Facebook - HERE So where you can find me, the best place in Instagram - @motherearthhealerpippa My website has lots of goodies and fun stuff to check out too - www.motherearthrising.co.uk   How you can work with me? Everyone is entitled to their own opinions on how they feel about stories. Many have created lists of how they rank the Star Wars films, most will put Episode I at the bottom of that list. While we don't claim that Phantom Menace is a great film, we believe that Attack of the Clones is a misstep for Star Wars, and a missed opportunity with the lead up to the era of the Clone Wars. The storytelling is what we have the largest critique for in this particular entry. While we have our own opinions, we share them knowing that many will not agree with us, and that is completely okay, just sit back and enjoy this journey of Parallel Quest. If you think we are totally off-base with our assessment, we'd love to hear from you :)IntroStories From the Guys:A Conversation about Cuties on Netflix and StorytellingA well-intended theme but maybe not the right way to go about telling this type of story.MAIN TOPIC: Attack of the Clones (Timestamp - 00:48:00)HistoryAttack of the Clones was released May 16th 2002Was one of the first movies shot on a high-definition digital 24-frame system (aka, not film stock)The first Star Wars film to be outgrossed the year it was released, finishing 4th at the box officeAs a joke, the working title of the film was called Jar Jar’s Great AdventureLucas originally wanted the clones to be Lando Calrissian, but later changed it to Jengo Fett (although, in A New Hope it’s alluded that Lando is a clone)Lucas added the droid factory scene after the initial shooting due to a lack of pacing. They shot it in four and a half hours--which is why it’s terribleDespite negative reception, it still kept with the SW theme of pushing technology in film. The new way of filming digitally is pretty much the standard nowReceived a 65% on RT and Ebert gave it a 2 out of 5Did win two awards at the Golden Raspberries: Worst Screenplay (George Lucas) and Worst Supporting Actor (Hayden Christensen)PlotOh boy….Three plot lines (sort of) happening at once:Anikin and Padme hiding out on Naboo because of an assassination attemptObi-wan trying to piece together who tried to kill Padme and uncovering a larger plot for a clone/droid armyThe senate voting Palpatine into ULTIMATE POWER!!!!Dude, honestly, this one is so convoluted I thought we just might talk it throughInitial ImpressionsZach:The only SW film I’ve ever seen on DVD first. I had no interest in seeing it after Phantom MenaceGlad I didn’tThis one was so bad that I completely forgot how it ended because I don’t think I ever finished itI remembered all the Legos coming outMy friends all said SW was deadCody:Disappointing! I was hoping for more war, less romance.Master Sifo-Dyas is one of the most confusing things in all of Star WarsFrom the earliest days of watching it (typical Haggard house rewatching), I would fast forward to all the best parts.Watching Yoda is the highlight of this film.As a kid I really liked the increased action over Phantom Menace.Lasting ImpressionsZach:Still THE worst Star Wars movie and one of the worst movies I’ve ever seenEven John Williams didn’t seem to know where to throw in his musicBUT, there are some redeeming qualities I can appreciate as I’ve gotten olderThe relationship between Obi-wan and Anikin is important now that I’m older because I have kids that are just like Annie at workAlso, think the theme of democracy versus dictatorship is always going to a pertinent discussion in AmericaCody: As time has gone by, this one has fallen to the bottom of my list of Star Wars Films.I still get a good laugh every time I watch the beginning when Anakin is getting shocked. My wife actually really liked this movie when I was introducing her to Star Wars.Final Thoughts/ClosingZach:DUNE!Cody:Finished Big FishThank you so much for checking out Parallel Quest. Part 2 of this month's Podcast sees double Olympic gold medalist Shirley Robertson go back to her sailing roots as she talks about success and failure with three very different multiple Olympic medallists. TThis edition kicks off with one of the podcast's most requested interviews, as Shirley discusses the remarkable Olympic history with reigning NACRA 17 Olympic champion Santiago Lange of Argentina. Santi discuses the delay in the Games, and how the postponement is effecting his build up, before delving into that incredible Olympic history. Lange has competed at six Olympics, Tokyo will be his seventh campaign, but it was his gold medal win in Rio that is perhaps the most remarkable of Olympic success stories.Just a year before the Olympic Regatta, Lange was diagnosed with lung cancer, and underwent surgery that put his Olympic dreams in severe doubt, but still managed to sail to victory in what was one of the most popular medal wins of all time.It wasn't until 1988, at the Korea Games, that sailing held it's first ever dedicated Women's Class, sailed in the 470 dinghy. In dramatic and challenging conditions, it was American Lynne Jewel Shore and her helm Allison Jolly that took the win, claiming the only gold medal for an otherwise disappointed US Sailing Team. In her interview with Robertson, Lynne reflects fondly of a rigorous and intense build up to the Games, as the duo tried to prepare for the treacherous Korean conditions..."I can't watch the footage, I look at it and I think 'what the heck were we doing out there', it really was dangerous conditions, it was crazy. I went there feeling very comfortable and confident that we had done everything we could to be prepared for the moment."Three of Robertson's interviewees have had their Tokyo 2020 Olympic campaigns completely disrupted by the postponement of the Games to 2021. The podcast wraps up with defending 49er Olympic Champion Blair Tuke, discussing how the postponement allows full concentration on the defence of the America's Cup, and talks about the logistics of running simultaneous Cup and Games campaigns. He delves into his partnership with Pete Burling, how the pair won silver in London 2012, and then didnt lose another regatta, all the way through to claiming gold in Rio by an unprecedented Olympic points margin.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 46 °F, and today looks a lot like yesterday. Expect highs in the mid 60s and a sneaky chance of rain throughout the day.Water coolerAccording to the Virginia Department of Health, there are nine presumptive positive cases of COVID-19 in the Commonwealth.Today’s coronavirus update is vastly different than yesterday’s, which just goes to show how quickly things can change. VCU and UR have both suspended class next week, through March 20th. When instruction resumes on the 23rd, VCU says “classes will be taught remotely for the foreseeable future” while UR says “faculty will prepare for the transition to remote instruction beginning March 23. Our community should be prepared for an extended period of distance learning.” Staff for both universities are expected to just come in and work like normal though, and that doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.At the local public school level, Superintendent Kamras cancelled “all school-sponsored and division-sponsored travel outside of the Richmond area for both students and staff.” He’ll also ask the School Board to reallocate $500,000 towards “supplies and services dedicated to preparing for and responding to COVID-19.” While school will carry on as normal, for now, he does say that “out of an abundance of caution we are already developing virtual learning guidance and examining different ways of supporting families who rely on the school meals program due to food insecurity.“ Henrico County Public Schools has a similar update. Meanwhile, beginning today, Seattle Public Schools have closed for a minimum of 14 calendar days. The Atlantic 10 men’s basketball tournament, in which VCU plays at 12:00 PM today and UR tomorrow at 6:00 PM, will continue but without fans. In fact, the entirety of March Madness will “be played with only essential staff and limited family attendance,” and the NBA just suspended the rest of their season.Sean Gorman and John Reid Blackwell at the Richmond Times-Dispatch talked to some of the region’s major employers about their Work From Home plans. And I imagine we’ll hear from the City—which has been pretty quite on the coronavirus front—today or tomorrow. I’ll tell you what, I’ve got immediate questions about Shamrock the Block and whatever other St. Patrick’s Day celebrations folks have planned.Trump flubbed the announcement of a travel ban from Europe, and freaking Tom Hanks tested positive for the virus.A lot has changed in the last 24 hours! As for me, I am still not a doctor, epidemiologist, or public health expert, but I am going to continue to socially distance the heck out of myself from as many meetings as possible. In my opinion, this is civic duty stuff! I will do my part to avoid being a disease vector and avoid putting high-risk folks in danger.Read this Correspondent of the Day piece in the RTD! The editor of Hanover’s Lee-Davis High School paper—from 40 years ago!—writes in to say “Unfortunately I wasn’t courageous enough to outright call for a new school name in 1980…Now I do have the courage to speak out for what is right. We understand the importance of inclusion. The time has come to change the names of these schools and remove the vestiges of racism in our communities.” Love this!Rich Griset at the Chesterfield Observer has an absolutely wonderful piece about the County’s history and future of public transportation. Check this out: Not only will the new #111 bus down Route 1 open on Monday, but the County has “approved a grant funding request to study public transit options along Midlothian Turnpike from west of Chesterfield Towne Center to Chippenham Parkway near the Richmond city line.” What the heck! Who even is this County?? This piece also features a quote from yours truly, which reveals 1) where I grew up, and 2) that, yes, this is really how I talk.A while back, I wrote about the General Assembly’s dalliance with regional minimum wage and how that seemed both dumb and inequitable. Luckily, the GA decided to send a clean minimum wage bill to the Governor that gets most folks in Virginia a $12/hour wage by 2023 and then, possibly, a $15/hr wage by 2026. Phil Hernandez at The Commonwealth Institute has some good analysis on what this means for working folks from across the state. This morning’s longreadWhen a danger is growing exponentially, everything looks fine until it doesn’tThis piece is from two days ago, so, basically, it’s one thousand years out of date at this point. That said, this illustration about exponential growth is super helpful in grokking something that our brains are just bad at handling. The reason closing schools, canceling basketball tournaments, and practicing social distance are so important is that things look fine….until suddenly—very suddenly—they don’t.There’s an old brain teaser that goes like this: You have a pond of a certain size, and upon that pond, a single lilypad. This particular species of lily pad reproduces once a day, so that on day two, you have two lily pads. On day three, you have four, and so on. Now the teaser. “If it takes the lily pads 48 days to cover the pond completely, how long will it take for the pond to be covered halfway?” The answer is 47 days. Moreover, at day 40, you’ll barely know the lily pads are there. If you’d like your longread to show up here, go chip in a couple bucks on the ol’ Patreon.

Hello and welcome!Today’s episode is called: “How To Get Comfortable With Being Vulnerable - Interview with Author Melissa Venable.”Melissa published her first book “Finding FabYOUlous” last year and she joined me to talk about the book itself and also to talk about the process of writing and publishing. This interview is gold for an aspiring writer...!If you’d prefer to watch the video version of this interview, you can do that at this link: http://www.mymessageislove.com/blog-articles/interview-with-author-melissa-venableEnjoy!********AOIFE:Hi everyone. I'm Aoife O’Leary and I am the creator of MyMessageIsLove.com and My Message Is Love is a writer's website. It’s for you if you want to write a book, if you're already writing, if need editing or copywriting services. Also it's got life musings in it because: all the good stuff!I have a special guest with me today. This is Melissa Venable and she is a writer and she just published her first book, “Finding FabYOUlous”. I'm going to read the subtitle because it's so cool I want to get it right: “A self-help with sass guide to finding, celebrating and capitalizing on the fabulousness that makes you YOU!So, thank you for being here, Melissa, and huge congratulations on your book!MELISSA:Well, thank you! I'm excited to be here to tell you all more about it!AOIFE:Absolutely! So let's start! Tell us about the book and tell us what it's about and who it's for and I have a whole load of other questions too…MELISSA:It’s called “Finding Fabulous” but with y-o-u instead of “u” in the normal spelling and the reason I did that is because this book is all about helping the reader get back to the person they were truly created to be before society and the world and everybody else, you know, with their input started piling all of their roles and their desires on the person. So it's just peeling back those layers and getting back to the person that you were truly created to be. Finding your true passions, your true desires and bringing those to life and letting them do their work in your life and in the world, because I feel like when we do that that's when we're going to be able to have the most impact and make the biggest difference in our families and our own personal lives, but in the world at large. So that's what it's all about.AOIFE:Yes! I know from reading this book that you have a lot of your own life stories within it, so did you have this idea for the book a little while ago or many years ago or was it recent?MELISSA: You know I, gosh, that was one of the biggest challenges with the book - was bringing kind of my own life stories into it because I mean, I'm not gonna lie there's some yuck in there, you know? I mean, things that are not real pretty to uncover and to talk about and write about and then to have other people read about. But at the same time I've also learned that my biggest messes have turned into my greatest messages, you know, and my tests have been my testimony, so that's why I always refer to myself. I'm like, when I'm introduced to something I'm like “from trainwreck to trainer” because I've been the train wreck - I know what it's like to have a life without control and that's hard and that you struggle, but I've come out of that and I'm living a truly fabulous life now.But I'm also nothing special. if I can do it anybody can do it, so that's what I wanted to make sure that this book – that message that it got out: That if you've gone through stuff – as we all have - you can turn it around and you can get back to who you were truly meant to be. You can make right that situation and have a really fabulous life as well. So, I've had the idea to write the book for probably 4 to 5 years, but I had the idea but didn’t necessarily have the guts. So it took a little while kind of processing through some of that. It's like, you know, if I'm going to do this I’m going to have to be willing to share you know the train wreck moments so people can truly understand that I have been there done. My thing now is “been there, done that, wrote the book!”It takes a little bit of courage to kind of, you know, be willing to put yourself out there and be vulnerable in that way. So the idea was there probably 4 or 5 years ago but the last 18 months I really got serious about like, “No, you know what? I am going to do this. I think it can help people and so I'm going to do this.”So, yeah, it's been percolating for a while…AOIFE:Did you have a particular reader in mind when you were creating your book?MELISSA:Yeah, you know I think anybody will love my book, and I mean, I hope that's true, but really, the demographic I really hope to hit was probably in my mind. My ideal reader was somebody who is maybe midlife or maybe not quite that, but 35 to 55. Somebody in that age range that was going through some transitions in her life, who was thinking, “You know, there's got to be more to it than what I'm doing right now.”Maybe feeling just kind of a little bit of unease, you know? Maybe they're going through something hard and they need some hope and they need some strategies to get through that, or maybe they're just feeling a little discontent, like, “there's got to be more to life than what I'm doing now every day, day in and day out.” So I think that that's really who my book is geared to and I think who will benefit the most from it.AOIFE:Did you feel that writing with a particular kind of sense, rather than a particular person in mind, but a sense, did that change the direction or your the way you?MELISSA: It did, it just gave me clarity. I wasn't trying to write to the masses, you know. This book is not going to appeal to my 19-year-old son, though he'sread it, to give him credit. He has read it. But, you know, it’s probably not his thing. When I thought about the person that I truly wanted to speak into the heart of: a woman, maybe 40, maybe feeling a little discontent or having been going through something difficult - a divorce, a career change, something like that. So, the person I wanted to most give hope to - when I thought about that person it really helped me dial in the message and get a lot more clear on how I wanted to deliver that. So I think that was hugely beneficial and when I would start to get off track or feel like I was kind of going down a rabbit hole, I would start to bring myself back to who that person was and who I was writing to, and that would really help me get back on the on the right course for the book.AOIFE:So you had the idea for the book and then it was percolating in your mind and over the last 18 months was really when you knuckled down to do the work. So was there something that happened in the middle there? Or a decision point or what inspired you?MELISSA: Yeah I mean, I kind of think it was a midlife crisis. I turned 47 and something about turning 47 - I mean not like 47 is some magicalnumber - but it's like something in my head click, “Oh my gosh, I'm3 years away from being 50 and if I am ever gonna do some of these things that I say I want to do I need to getcrackin’”.And also I kind of hit a point in my life where … In mybook I talk about my struggle with an eating disorder, I talk about my struggle to get out of an emotionally and physically abusive marriage. I talk about those things. But I'm at a point in my life now that those things are far enough behind me that I can talk about them without the pain and without the angst that they bring up and in a way that I think is helpful now.Once I got to that point I was like, “Okay, now it's time. I worked through that and I'm beyond that now, so I think now is the time that I could take what I learned going through all that and package it in a way that can be helpful to other people - even if they are in obviously very different situations.”I just think it took a little while. I had to kind of get past that and heal from some of that on my own, so that then I could help others kindof go through that process too. In the last 18 months, I was like, “I'm there. I'm fine. My life is on a good trajectory now. I love my cat. Now is the time and I'm gonna be 50 in 3 years! Get crack-a-lackin' on this, so I think that it's just a kind of a culmination of those things coming together all at once.AOIFE:How was it to write these personal things and share these personal stories- because I have to say that's something that I still shy away from – and also, did you set boundaries around that for yourself or were there places that you were not willing to go? How did it all feel?MELISSA: I think, sure, there are probably still things that are not in my book and those are probably just things that are just going to be with me, you knowthey're mine. I didn't really think some of those would be beneficial to the reader anyway so that doesn't need to be included.I did have some boundaries of what I was and was not willing to share, but when I approached it I just kept thinking, “Yeah, this is hard. This was hard stuff that I went through and these steps I had to take and the therapy that I went through and all those things that I had to go through in order to have this experience.”I'm like if it's helpful, though, if it has the potential to help somebody elsethen I want to be able to include that. I had to get comfortable with being vulnerable because there is stuff in there that it's like, “Woooooo…. Yeah… now my parents have read this book!!”Yeah, but you have to be willing to be vulnerable and be open about it. I just kept thinking in my head - the thing that kept me on track – is if I feel like this is genuinely gonna have the opportunity to benefit somebody else, then I want to include it, so that just the kind of spin that I had the entire time. But yeah, it was a little hard sometimes, but now look the book is out and I'm getting feedback I am just so glad that I included some of those parts because I feel like those are the things people are coming to talk to me about those are the things that they bring up – those harder moments are what touched them and what have really inspired and helpedthem. So I'm glad that I included those.AOIFE: Yeah it's our humanity. Even if the circumstances are different, we all understand pain and understand those feelings of really being at your lowest.MELISSA:Right, right.AOIFE:So just to shift it a little bit… what was your writing process like on aday-to-day basis?MELISSA: I wish I could say that I'm one of those people that you know jumpsoutta bed at 4 o'clock in the morning and writes for 3 hours. I'm not. Iwish it was. I'm not. I tend to be more productive at night - I'm a night owl by nature.AOIFE:Yeay! So am I!MELISSA: Oh, great! I’m glad to hear that. So, my mind tends to be more active at night, you know when the house is quiet, people are in bed. I can really focus and do my writing then. My process really was – I don't know that I had a process. My thing was I made myself write every single day.I say every single day but there were a couple times when my husband and I would go on a vacation and I didn't and there was one time when I had pneumonia and I was in bed and I was like “I can't! I can't even get out of bed, I’m not going to write.”But, barring those kinds of things, I made myself write every single day. There were some days where I would crank out an entire chapter and I'd be on a real roll. There were other days where it was a struggle just to get a paragraph, but nonetheless I would make myself sit down at thecomputer and write.I feel like that consistency was so important and I think the hardest part for me honestly every single day was just getting started - was just getting my butt in the chair and, you know, the keyboard there and actually to start to open the file and start typing. That was the hardest part. Once I got past that first sentence or two, then it got much easier, but just having the discipline and the consistency to write something every single day. Once I started the writing then I found that it usually it would start to flow. I'd get kind of in that, you know, that momentum going. So that was basically my process - nothing too super scientific or, you know, fascinating I guess, but just the consistency.AOIFE:So when you had your first draft written, what was your editing process from there through to the end? Were there multiple edits or did youhave BETA readers or what was best for you?MELISSA: Yes, yes and yes.I'll confess, so I at first, you know, never having done this before I was like “You know, my degree is in English, I know punctuation, I can edit this thing, no problem!” I did read it several times myself and I did learn that the problem withthat is that as the author I know what the book is supposed to say. I know what it's supposed to say. So when I read it in my head that's what I read, even though I might have two words mixed up or I might have a word missing or something. In my head I know what it's supposed to say so that's how I read it. That's why I think it's so crucial that you have somebody else read your book as well.Thankfully, I have a good friend who is a copy editor and she read it through and I will tell you that it was painful to get my pages backwith so much red on them. I'm like, “Wait, my degree is in English. I'm supposed to be good at this. What is all this red here for?” But it was very, very helpful. Then I did also have some BETA readers too and they would give me feedback, like, “Okay, you're kind of on a rabbit hole here… this is a little confusing” and they helped me tighten it up too. But, then again I read the thing also probably 17 bazillion times myself just trying to tweak it and get it to where I was really happy with it. So I do think no matter how good you think you are - and you are I'm sure you are - again my degree is in English, I'm supposed to know this stuff - It is so important to get another set of eyes I think on your materialbecause they will just catch things that you don't.I'm fortunate that the editor that I did have, again, was a friend of mine so she knows my voice she knows how I talk and how I present ineveryday life and it was really important to me that my book wasauthentic to that I wanted to sound like me. So she was able to read it with that kind of ear. She knew how I sounded anyway so she was able to do that, but she would catch when I would have “and and” in a sentencethat I somehow I didn't see or whatever. I didn’t catch those things. So it’s a little painful to have your pages come back to you with that much red on them but it's so, so helpful.AOIFE:I'm usually the person making the red marks!MELISSA: God bless you! I mean… I don’t like you for those reasons, but we need you so much! We need you so badly!AOIFE:So you decided to self-publish. Was that a decision you made from the get-go or did you consider traditional publishing or what was it aboutself-publishing that made you choose that?MELISSA: Okay, actually no. My original intention was to go traditional publishing and I had a publisher that I’d been talking with and was interested in the book. I was going down that path. The thing that just kept kind of sticking in my craw a little bit was like “Man” – and now I will say it was a small publishing - but still you know traditional publishing this like, that's always what you want, right?” But when I started going through the contracts looking at what they were presenting to me, I was like “Man”, I was gonna be doing a lotof work and writing this book and yet I was going to be making just very, very little on my book and yet I was still going to be expected to do so much of the marketing myself. The more I looked at that I was just like, “This doesn't really make sense to me.”So then I went - you know, I still kind of had that as an option but then Istarted looking around and I looked at some indie publishers, thepublisher where you can pay them and they'll take your pages and they'll turn it into a book. I was like, “Okay, well that would be easy… you know just give them my stuff and pay them”. Except for it's not so easy when you know that's $3,500 that they want to make your book into a book. So I was like, “Okay, I don't really want to do that.”But, I’m a big fan, I’m not sure if you’re familiar with her, but, I’m a big fan of Marie Forleo. She's a business guru and I just I love her, andshe's got MarieTV on YouTube, and one of her catchphrases that she always uses is: “Everything is figure-out-able” and I'm like, “Okay, if everything is figure-out-able, I should be able to figure out how to self publish this book, still have it look like a quality piece of work and professional. I should be able to figure this out. So I just set out to figure this out – and thanks to online courses and you know information I got off of Pinterest and all these different things, I was able to figure it out.It took me more time, you know, I mean obviously it took me time toresearch how to use Createspace, how to format my book properly, how to do all these things. I did hire someone to do my cover because I wanted that to look really good. So, you know, I just kind of went with that “everything is figure-out-able” and I figured it out.And because of that I now have a product that I'm proud of that looks great, I think, but I didn't have to pay somebody $3,500 to do it and I'mnot paying or somebody's not taking a huge cut of every book sale now because of that. Now, will I do that again? Probably. I mean, obviously, if one of the big publishers came knocking on my door, then we'll talk, but until that time I think that self-publishing is a real viable option for people. I thinkthat a lot of authors are realizing this and going that way now. So, don't think that you have to be traditionally published to have a quality piece of work nowadays. That's just not the case anymore.AOIFE:… and you can still get your books in libraries and in bookshops…MELISSA: also absolutelyAOIFE: Oh, are you a B-schooler?MELISSA: Not yes, but I think I'm going to be! Right now I am enrolled in acertification course for life coaching, so I mean, I'm getting a certificationfor that. As soon as that's done, my next thing is going to be B-School, so you know Marie Forleo? Yeah, yeah. I just love that.So I'm going to be, yeah!AOIFE:Presuming you're writing another book - for some reason I have a sense that you have more books in you – So, presuming you're writing another book, what are things that you will absolutely do next time and what are some things you will change?MELISSA: So absolutely I will go back to my write every day. I mean that'sthe thing I just kind of have to do that - I will write every day. I’m fortunate now that I've done it once, I've got one under my belt you know, so now I know how to format a book, I know how to use Createspace. I don't have to re-learn all of that, thank the good Lordfor that. So I will do some of those things again, but I think again theconsistency. I will continue to always hire someone to do my covers. I will continue to have someone edit my book for me. So those kinds ofthings. The thing that I hope not to do is to let the fear and just “Ohgosh, is anybody gonna read this?” and “Why? All this is just a waste of time… nobody's gonna want to read this garbage,” and blah blah blah blah blah.I'm not gonna let that hold me back this time because now I've done oneand lo and behold people are reading it and people are enjoying it and so now I’m just kind of like, “Okay, I can do this. I've done it I can do it and it's gone well.” So I'm going to try - I'm not saying I’ll be perfect at this one – but I'mgonna try to leave some of that fear and angst behind me and just forgeon. You know, move forward with things more quickly without the hesitation and the doubt. Hopefully. My lips to God's ears… we'll see. Hope it works out that way.AOIFE:Actually I was gonna ask you this after a couple of questions, but now seems a good time. When did you encounter any sort of moments ofresistance or “what am I doing?” or even procrastination orany of those human things that hit us when we're creating anything? How did you work through that if you came across those kind of moments?MELISSA: Yeah so I had to get just really, really, really clear on my why. Why am I doing this? And, you know I will tell you that my why for writing my book is I basically I just wanted originally - originally - I just wanted this to be like a fancy business card, okay?I wanted it to open doors for my coaching programs. I wanted it to open doors for speaking engagements and workshops - something I could sell on a back table if I did workshops - those kinds of things.I wasn't even really thinking about it as far as book signings and selling itand all that it was more just something I wanted to help promote otherthings that I had going on. So the fact that it then actually started to sellthat was just you know icing on the cake for me. That was great. So I think when I felt the resistance, though, I would have to take myself back to why I originally was wanting to do this - the people I thought I could help. You know, I have a vision board. I'm all about that kind of stuff, thinking about you know where you want to be in your life and I would just get refocused back on those things. Like, “This is why it's important to me - whether I ever sell a copy or not, I know that it can help me further my work in my coaching, the things that are important to me.” So I think it's just you really have to be really clear on your why and if you're clear enough on that coming back to that is what can help keeping you on the right track - help you to forge on when it's tough, when you're in that resistance and you're like “Nobody’s going to read this junk! Why am I doing this? Oh my gosh, this is terrible!”There were times when I was writing and thinking, “Tthis is terrible. This is terrible.” and I’d go back and I'd edit whenever and take it out, butgoing back to my why is just the thing that kept me going. So I think you have to be really, really, really firm on why you’re doing it and then be able to call on that when you need it - because there will be times, I promise, it’s doesn’t matter how great a writer you are. There will betimes you'll look at this and think, “This is garbage. Why am I even doing this?” It just happens - whether you're having a bad day or something – it will just happen. So just be really clear on why you're doing it and let that be kind of the fuel that keeps you going.AOIFE:Did you have any support people around? In your book you talk about “run through the sprinklers and stay away from the drains”, so you can explain that property better than me.MELISSA: Yes, I think we probably all have both kinds of people in our lives. So… sprinklers… okay, in the book this is how I describe different people. We have sprinklers in our lives. These are the people that love and support us and they just sprinkle their joy and love and support on youand you just blossom when you're in their presence, okay? But then we also have drains - and those are the people who literally being in their presence just drains the energy right out of you. And a lot of times we can just walk into a room with the person and immediately know what kind of person they're going to be.So I think it's very, very important, especially when you're undergoing something like writing a book or an important task that's really important to you, is that you spend as much time as possible with those sprinklers - those people who believe in you and who will encourage you and feed into you and, you know, keep you going when things are hard.Fortunately my amazing husband is one of those for me. My parents are those for me. I have some great friends, girlfriends, that'd be like, “Okay, we need the next chapter. Is it written yet? We've gotta keep reading!” So they would keep me going. And even I have two college-age sons - they're 19 and almost 22 – clearly, not the demographic for my book, but they knew I was writing a book and, God bless them, they were like, “How's the book coming, Mom?” They were really encouraging too -and my stepdaughter. So I really did have a core group of people that when I was in tears I'm like, “Honestly, I’m just going to chuck this whole thing,” they were like “No, no. We need the next chapter. We're hooked!”So having those kinds of people is very, very important, I think, and also being able to erect solid boundaries around the drains, because that's important too, I think. So, yeah, get your support team togetherAOIFE:Did you have, when you were beginning writing, was there anything that you just didn't anticipate? Or you didn't know that something was going to go a certain way or that's sort of surprised you with the writing or anything?MELISSA: Yeah, so the thing that surprised – so when I started writing my book the thing that scared me the most was like, “I am NOT gonna have enough to say to fill a book. I'm gonna have four pages and be done. I'm not gonna have enough to say.” Well, what surprised me was that I actually ended up having way toomuch to say. I actually ended up – and, oh God, this was painful, but - I actually ended up cutting out 12 chapters – 12 chapters - of my book because turned out I had written like the next “War and Peace”.So now I have like almost another book ready to go just from those12 chapters I pulled out of this one. So I think that really surprised me that once I sat down and started writing that it just flowed and it came out and I ended up with so much more than I anticipated. So I did not expect that at all. I thought I was gonna be, you know, pulling teeth just to come up with enough to fill a book.So I think that was the biggest surprise - that I had more to say than I really anticipated.Yeah and I think that a nice surprise is just how well it's been received. I mean that just makes my heart so happy that people are reading it andthey're enjoying it and their lives are being touched by it and they're able to make sustainable change in their lives because of it. So that's just something I didn't necessarily - I hoped for but I didn't anticipate. I didn't know if it was going to actually come to be and it is.AOIFE:Actually my next question is about what's been most rewarding for you about having your book at in the world and the impact that it's making on the people who read it? How is that feeling?MELISSA: There is no greater feeling when I have somebody come up to me it's like, “Oh my gosh, I read your book”. Especially, you expect your friends to come say nice things to you, but when it's somebody that you don't even really know that you know but they've got your book and they've read it and they're like, “I've been through a similar situation” or “I had divorce” or “I'm struggling with a job situation, but reading your book has really helped me gain some clarity and I'm able to get to figure out what it is exactly that I want and now take some concrete steps in that direction”.Another piece of feedback that I really have enjoyed hearing is people tell me that in the personal development genre there are a lot of really inspiring books out there. You can go to any bookstore and there's a shelf full – lots of inspiration. But what people told me they liked about mine is that not only is it inspiring it's also actionable. You know it's like it’s great to get inspired, but then you need something to kind of help you road map, to help you take some real concrete steps to live that life that you're now so inspired to follow after - and they liked that my book not only provides the inspiration, but it provides the actionable steps that you can take too - so that’s really – I loved hearing that; that people are actually kind of putting it into work and that it's it's benefiting them.AOIFE:What advice would you give to somebody - say you know when 4 or 5 years ago you were starting to the ideas and then in the last year and a half you've been really like focused on it - so and if you go back say from 4 years go to 1 and a half years ago. For the people in that stage - they want to write and they don't have the confidence yet or they don't feel brave enough yet or they're second-guessing themselves or wondering if they can do it. What would you say to them?MELISSA: I would say write. Just start writing. Yeah. Write. The best way to fight fear, I think, is action. Action is the best way to fight beer and if you start taking action. And yeah, okay, some of it might not be good, I mean I get that - not everything I wrote was good - but just start writing. Start the process. Just start getting some words down on the page and even if that's not what you end up going with down the road, I mean that's fine. At least you're starting the habit You're starting to get yourself in that mental space where you're a writer, but I just think you just have to write.Even, I mean, there were plenty of things I wrote and no one will ever read. They didn't make it to a book. They weren't good and nobody's ever read it, but still just that that practice of sitting down and writing and being a writer - because all you have to do to be a writer is write. You don't necessarily have to be published. You don't have to be.Also, I’m a runner. I'm not a great marathon or anything. You don'thave to be. All you have to do to be a runner is run, you know? So I run a little. All you have to do to be a writer is write. So you sit down at your desk and you start to write and you start to get some words on paper. I think it's therapeutic. I think it's empowering and, again, the best way to combat fear is through action - so start taking that action and then as you write you'll come up with your outline, how you want things to flow and all that. You can start arranging the pieces, but my biggest piece of advice would just be to writeAOIFE:It also brings to mind in the book you mentioned Newton's Laws ofPhysics – that a body that's in motion tends to stay in motion, a bodythat's at rest tends to stay at rest. I did 2 years, maybe 3 years of Physics in school and that’s all I held on to!MELISSA: Isaac Newton! I find that his laws… those are so applicable in this, and in anything. It’s like if you just get started… it's overcoming that initial inertia of being at rest. You know, if you can overcome that and get yourself in motion you'll tend to stay in motion. So once you start writing it'll start to flow - so that's why you just gotta get started and do it!AOIFE:So what's next for you?I know http://fabyoulouslife.com/ is your website and your mission and movement and the book is part of this - and you said that you're getting a coaching certification. What's next for you and where can people find out more about you?MELISSA: Absolutely, yeah. So they can find out more about me at my website which is http://fabyoulouslife.com/ I am getting a special certification for coaching, but I am a coach already so I do coaching and speaking and those kinds of things. I do have - my next book is in the process of being written right now, so I have that that I'm hoping to have out by the end of the year. That's my goal. I need it to really because it's called “The Fabulist” and it's 365 – well, it's more of a guided journal almost, but it's lists that you make every single day that help you discover more about who you are.So I want it to come at the end of the year because I think it'd be something great just for people start at the beginning of the year - sothat's the goal so I'm working on that right now. But, yeah we're also doing workshops and coaching and all kinds of things so just go to http://fabyoulouslife.com/ and you can get all the information there.I'd also encourage people while they're there to sign up to get on my mailing list – which, a box will pop up where you can do that - because then you'll be in the loop whenever something new or different comes on the scene. You'll be one of the first to know. So there's that - lots of great things.AOIFE:Well, thank you so much, Melissa Venable, for being here and for sharing all your wisdom with us.I know that's going to be really helpful to some writers who are about to get started and for people who want to read “Finding FabYOUlous” as well.Thank you, so much.MELISSA: Thank you. During the 20-year war between the Lord's Resistance Army and government forces in northern Uganda, community stations like Radio Wa used “come home messaging” to encourage abducted children to defect. Today, their broadcasts for peace are working to heal the north's hidden scars. "When the radio began, there was a lot of insecurity," Radio Wa's director Magdaline Kasuku told RFI. It was in late 2001. "There was a lot of violence, there was a lot of killings and one of the biggest weapons they [the rebels] used was children." Between 1986 and 2006, Joseph Kony kidnapped thousands of children into his rebel group, the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), turning the girls into sex slaves and the boys into child soldiers. At the height of the conflict, community stations like Radio Wa in Lira, northern Uganda, began to emerge, offering locals isolated in towns and villages, a different message to the one being played out on their doorstep. The programme they came up with was Karibu. "Karibu is a kiswahili word that means 'welcome'," explains Kasuku. "Many parents would come through the radio to complain, saying 'Look, my child has disappeared, I don't know where he or she is. Could you help me find out where my child is?'," she says. The programme was so popular in reaching out to communities in the north that it came under threat from the LRA. In 2002 the rebels burnt it down. It would take less than a year for Radio Wa to be rebuilt, owing to public outcry over its destruction. "It went beyond Uganda," comments Kasuku. "The whole world was wondering how a small community radio which is trying to empower the people in a wartorn area, can be burnt down, so it really became a national issue." Avoiding propaganda trap So much so that even Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni came to inspect the damage, promising to rebuild Radio Wa. "They said, Tthis radio is so powerful in reaching out to the community here.' So they gave us a wider coverage," recounts Kasuku. "Normally, community radios are given to cover a kilometre or a kilowatt. That day, he [Yoweri Museveni] promised that we are going to be given four kilowatts." But in its bid to promote peace did Radio Wa not fall into the trap of toeing the government's line and promoting its anti-LRA propaganda? For Kasuku, the aim of Radio Wa's Karibu programme went beyond partisan lines. "Parents would come to the station and make an appeal: 'I want to talk to my child, my daughter, my son, wherever they are, if they're still alive, I want them to know that I still love them. I know that they might have done so many bad things, killed people, and all that, but they should be able to know that I love them,'." Coming home The formula encouraged more than 1,400 abducted children to break with the LRA and return to their families. After the war former LRA combattants questioned by police said they had been encouraged to return home through listening to stations like Radio Wa. Hearing their mother say "Wherever you are, my child, just come back, we love you, we forgive you," helped persuade them, explains Kasuku. Children who were abducted, came back, to tell their story and pull the lid off the atrocities they endured under the LRA. More than 10 years on, after a peace deal was signed in South Sudan, does Radio Wa's message of peace still ring true in the Uganda of today? The scars of war may be healing but the country is still grappling with kidnappings and killings, this time of young women in the Kampala capital. Healing the scars "There are no more gunshots, yes," Kasuku says. "But, when we interact with the community, you find that they have so many unfinished business. There are so many people who up to now have never let go of what their experiences were." The appearance of LRA commander Dominic Ogwen at the International Criminal Court at the Hague has stirred up painful memories. Kasuku says, many survivors still live with trauma and insists programmes like hers are necessary. "We want to continue encouraging people and letting them know they can overcome the trauma, the pain, the violence, all the bad things they went through in life. And they don't need to retaliate." Ugandan authorities are also keen to document the country's past and are planning a new war museum to this effect. "People need to start the healing process," reckons Kasuku. "That is the message that we keep on passing. Even today, despite the fact there is no more war. So, I think at Radio Wa, we realise we have even more work now than we did before," she says.
