Vernon Thomas, a military attorney in the United States Army Reserves and a city prosecutor in New Orleans, shares his unique journey from aspiring English teacher to successful lawyer. In this episode, he reflects on the influence of his father, a prominent attorney, and discusses the importance of analytical skills in legal practice, as well as his unconventional approach to studying for the bar exam. Vernon also emphasizes the value of mentorship and the diverse opportunities that a law degree can provide.Lawyer Side HustlesIn this episode, the discussion highlights the growing trend of lawyers engaging in side hustles alongside their primary legal practices. Vernon exemplifies this by balancing his role as a municipal prosecutor with a private criminal defense practice. This dual approach not only allows him to diversify his income but also enriches his legal experience. By managing both responsibilities, he gains insights from different areas of law, which ultimately enhances his effectiveness as an attorney.“The municipal prosecution job... is part-time... and then because I'm part-time, I'm allowed to have my private criminal defense practice,” shares Vernon Thomas in Episode 167 of You Are a Lawyer.Thomas's involvement in the Cutting Edge Music Conference illustrates how lawyers can leverage their expertise in niche markets, such as entertainment law, to create additional opportunities. This conference serves as a platform for legal professionals to connect with others in the entertainment industry, providing valuable insights into the complexities of intellectual property and agency relationships. By engaging in such side ventures, lawyers can not only expand their professional networks but also explore their passions outside of traditional legal work. This multifaceted approach to a legal career can lead to greater job satisfaction and a more robust understanding of the law's application in various contexts.LISTEN TO LEARNInsights into the unique experiences of a military attorney and the differences between military and civilian law practicesThe importance of analytical skills in law and how they can be applied in various legal contextsThe significance of mentorship and learning from family legacies in the legal professionWE ALSO DISCUSSThe impact of family background on career choices and the advantages of having a legal mentorThe role of the Cutting Edge Music Conference in educating about entertainment law and the evolving landscape of digital contentAdvice for prospective law students, emphasizing that it's never too late to pursue a legal education and the importance of hard work and dedicationJoin the FREE mailing list!Get behind-the-scenes content from You Are A Lawyer. 1) Visit www.youarealawyer.com2) Add your email address to the Subscribe pop-up box OR3) Enter your email address on the right side of the screen4) Get emails from me (I won't fill your inbox with junk)!Interact with You Are A LawyerKyla Denanyoh hosts the You Are A Lawyer podcast. Follow the podcast:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@youarealawyerWebsite: https://www.youarealawyer.com

Character, Policy, and Christian Principles for Voting, with David French

When it comes to voting, how should we balance character and policy? “If I'm voting for a politician,” journalist David French suggests, “I have a test. One is: Do they have the character necessary for the job? And the higher the position they're seeking, the more character that is necessary. And number two: Do they broadly agree with me on the most important policies?” In this episode, Mark Labberton welcomes journalist David French (opinion columnist for the New York Times; formerly The Atlantic, The Dispatch, and National Review) for a discussion of character, policy, and principles for faithful, virtuous engagement in polarized American politics. French's commitment to Christian faith, moral character, and reasoned policy has emerged from his experience as a former commercial lawyer, military lawyer, and former president of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression. A political conservative, French has throughout his career been an advocate for First Amendment rights, pro-life individuals and organizations, and the ideals of democracy. He describes himself as “an evangelical conservative who believes strongly in a classical liberal, pluralistic vision of American democracy.” Together, Mark and David discuss his Christian upbringing; his personal partisan commitments; the importance of character in party politics; the importance of nuanced and reasoned policy; why he's voting for Kamala Harris in order to save conservative politics; two Bible verses for this election season; how to respond to our culture of fear; and how to secure a more courageous, loving, and humble politics. About David French David French is an opinion columnist for the New York Times, and previously wrote for The Atlantic, The Dispatch, and National Review. He is a New York Times bestselling author of Divided We Fall: America's Secession Threat and How to Restore Our Nation. He describes himself as “an evangelical conservative who believes strongly in a classical liberal, pluralistic vision of American democracy.” He is a graduate of Harvard Law School, the past president of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, and a former lecturer at Cornell Law School. He has served as a senior counsel for the American Center for Law and Justice and the Alliance Defending Freedom. David is a former major in the United States Army Reserve. In 2007, he deployed to Iraq, serving in Diyala Province as Squadron Judge Advocate for the 2nd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, where he was awarded the Bronze Star. Show Notes Divided We Fall: America's Secession Threat and How to Restore Our Nation “I was a First Amendment litigator with a writing hobby.” Background in the Acapella Churches of Christ: a Restoration Movement from the early-19th century “It turned into something kind of separatist, sectarian, and ferociously legalistic.” “I grew up with a real grounding. grounding and reading the Bible, which actually, ironically enough, was the seed of me leaving the church of Christ.” “I was a Cold War conservative and a conservative Christian. And they were related, but not, but they weren't inextricably tied together. So for me, my, you know, ideology was downstream of my faith, but I didn't think that my ideology was the inevitable result of my faith.” Pro-Life Activism Representing pro-life individuals Existential clash: the confrontation between the Soviet Union and the United States Why David French is voting for Kamala Harris in order to save conservative politics “My party loyalty has always been related to two things. One is the ideology of the party and the other one is the character of the party. And the party leaders and the people that I vote for, I've always had a character test and an ideological test.” Bad character and bad policy—”why would I be attached to that? There's no claim on my loyalty there.” The importance of character “If the conservative perspective that I have wants to have any purchase in American politics, MAGA has to lose. Donald Trump has to lose.” Federalism: a practical understanding that smaller government is better. Republican Party increasingly embracing a pro-choice platform “If you're going to have a healthy two party system, the distinctions should be around good people of high character approaching policy solutions from different perspectives.” “One of these parties has sort of left the norms of American. political engagement.” “I voted for Mitt Romney more than Mitt Romney's probably voted for Mitt Romney.” “If I'm voting for a politician, I have a test. One is: Do they have the character necessary for the job? And the higher the position they're seeking, the more character that is necessary. And number two: Do they broadly agree with me on the most important policies?” “I have very little patience for those people who say I'm somehow not a Christian for voting for a pro-choice candidate. When they're voting for a pro-choice candidate who's been adjudicated a sex abuser, that is difficult for me to discern how that is a more Christian stance.” Clear, independent thinker Logical reasoning and courageous statements A living faith by which we think through ideas “There's a fine line between stubbornness and courage.” “In these last 10 years, I've really had to ask myself: Who are you really?” David French's parents' example of faith and virtue Learning from World War I and World War II history “Some of the worst things that have happened in American history have happened because people didn't want to do hard things.” “I think the sanctification process, though, is difficult. It means that you're being exposed to constantly your own sin is being exposed to yourself.” Mark asks: “What do you want Christian people, thoughtful, committed, curious, uncertain, tenuous Christian people to, to do between now and the election?” 2 Timothy 1:7—“God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, of love, and of sound mind.” Micah 6:8—”What does the Lord require of you, O man? What is good? To act justly, to love kindness, and to walk humbly before the Lord your God.” Ideological diversity: be curious, seek disagreement “If you just show affection for people and curiosity towards their views, anger tends to drain out of a room.” “College students are full of anxiety about conflict.” “Fear not.” The A Team—arming up for battle “And they find out that a lot of these folks that they were taught were going to be their enemies are actually just super kind, normal folks.” “They're equipping them to fight, not to love their neighbor, fight their neighbor, not love their neighbor.” Mark asks: “What handles would you give people in living in a fear dominated moment in American history?” “In receiving anger and fear, do not try to build up a bulletproof thick skin. … Because you know what that does? It often walls you off from legitimate criticism.” Thick skin, soft heart. “An enormous amount of fear is rooted in a sense—a feeling—of non-belonging and loneliness. Isolation and loneliness.” “People who are more isolated and alone are drawn to these authoritarian movements.” “Ease the loneliness, build the connection. … Lean into relationship and presence.” “It was just stunning to me that, against all evidence of scripture, Christians were consigning people to eternal damnation over a vote in a presidential election.” Miles Law: “Where we stand is based on where we sit.” Kindness, humility, not living a fear-based angry life “If you're in a community where the fruit of the spirit dominate, you can withstand a lot of disagreement.” Production Credits Conversing is produced and distributed in partnership with Comment Magazine and Fuller Seminary.

In Today's episode of the CBL Podcast, William Wolfe sits down with Stephen Feinstein, Pastor of Sovereign Way Christian Church and United States Army Reserve Chaplain, to discuss Stephen's concerns with SBC Platform leadership on the issues of power, money, and biblical authority.   #CenterForBaptistLeadership #SBC2024 #StephenFeinstein #Conversion #Pastor #Chaplain #Platform #Leadership #Power #Money #BiblicalAuthority   Stephen is the youngest son of a Jewish father and a Roman Catholic mother. As a kid he preferred no particular religion, but instead did whatever seemed right in his own eyes. This all changed when he was sixteen years old. Although he heard the gospel from a neighbor many times before, he ignored it. But when he was nearly 17, he heard a gospel presentation from a pastor, which really got him thinking about his eternal fate for the first time. Over the next six months, he was searching for more answers, and when he was 17½, he received Jesus Christ as Lord.   His life was marked by a divine transformation known in the Bible as conversion. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: About my job: "Plans Officer", published by Weaver on September 10, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. I've been a plans Officer for the United States Army Reserve since 2021. People have no clue what reservists do and much less what "Active Guard Reserve" Soldiers do, and I see it's Career Week, so here's my job. Also I'm shamelessly stealing Lizkas format, so thank her for me writing this. Note that anything written here is my opinion and does not represent the department of defense, or any US Government agency. My background & how I got here I studied Computer Science in college and graduate into the great recession of 2008. After not getting the exact job I wanted (Marine Officer), I went to the Army recruiter and they gave me the option to be an Army Reserve Quartermaster Officer. I wanted something more active, but since Officer Candidate School was very competitive I wasn't in the top. I served part time as a Platoon Leader, Company Commander and Company Executive Officer. I interviewed with a different unit to change my branch to Civil Affairs, transferred to the unit and then served there as a Battalion Logistics Officer (S4) until I got called to go to first deploy, then school. My small school team of four Captains placed in the top six(Commandants List) of our approximately 60 person class and I was a Civil Affairs(CA) Officer after about 8 years. I credit my time working alongside CA officers as a large part of how well I did. At the same time I worked as a state department contractor full time. I also was going through Nursing school for most of it, though I didn't make it through. During my deployment, I was always trying to quantify how much we were doing and I had problems doing so. I read books like Dead Aid and Toxic Charity, trying to get a sense of how to 'do international development' and 'foreign aid'. You might think that this is why I joined EA. Nope. My writing partner made me read Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality and then, yes you can guess the rest. I got picked up for a 3 year tour of AGR and decided to put my civilian career on hold and see if I liked it. What I actually work on There is a very specific scope of things that only I do, mostly long range planning, facilitation, writing policy and working on strategy/prioritization for my organization. This includes everything that is mandated for the unit I work for to do to what is directed at a local level for us to do. Most of my work is office work, over various lovely software, and some of it is field work. Here is what I do normally: Field questions from people inside the unit Answer Requests for Information (RFIs) from higher echelons or sister units Write Operations Orders and iron out short term plans Be the telephone between two organizations that need to talk. I also run several meetings that are ad hoc or weekly dependent. I've had to work with a lot of people and I have met so many good people. It's not EA, but they all want to make a difference. Reflecting on the Role I opted into a very specialized career field in an already specialized group. I love the people and the unit culture is great, but they ask a lot of the part timers. Some things I value: I'm expected to work independently. If the work is done, then it's done. I'm not waiting around for someone's input normally. I get to work with top performers regularly. I get to mentor a lot of junior Officers and Enlisted, which is a big draw. Some things that can be hard: I'm not in charge, I just work here. Even though I plan a lot in advance, sometimes the commanders will choose to take a different path, upending a lot of my work. There's a lot of things that need to be on a regulatory timeline that I can not change. This is fine, except when people try to get around it. Some Skills I develop in this job: Lan...

Nick Small is the Founder and CEO of U.S. Pave, a paving company specializing in commercial parking lot maintenance. Since 2013, Nick has committed himself to improving the industry through exceptional service and attention to detail. Before becoming a business owner, he gained valuable experience working for his family's painting company. Nick also dutifully served six years in the United States Army Reserves as military police. In this episode… Entrepreneurs must understand their responsibility to cultivate and maintain honor and integrity in their business. Without attention to detail, their reputable standing can fall by the wayside. What can you implement to maintain the reputation you've worked hard to establish?  The construction industry holds notoriety for being an unclean industry. Nick Small, a construction business owner, was vehement about changing the public's perception by strategizing how to make his grimy job more attractive to customers. While many construction companies have a reputation for being disorganized, Nick established systems and routines that supported his crew, contributing to better working conditions and satisfying customer expectations.  On this episode of This Is Concrete, Chad Gill welcomes Nick Small, Founder and CEO of U.S. Pave, to discuss implementing strategies to maintain his highly regarded business reputation. Nick highlights the importance for business owners to take ownership of their company, the value of developing a system to organize business procedures, and how to address weaknesses in individual crew members.

Whenever women get together, we have an opportunity to share our stories. While the cadence of each narrative may differ wildly from our own, we recognize something familiar in the storyteller's experience. That's the rhythm of sisterhood. It calls us to bear witness to each other's herstory and preserve these sacred accounts. When I learned of this year's theme for National Women's Month, “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories,” I knew I had to invite Dr. Reverend Irene Taylor. She's a retired pastor who has served her professional calling for almost 40 years, including as a United States Army Reserve chaplain. To say that she has impacted the lives of many women is an understatement. Although our time in conversation falls short of capturing Reverend Irene's full brilliance, it honors and celebrates her contribution to our ever-expanding treasury of women's truths. *** If this conversation has brought you to an insight, a story, a sense of relief, please email me at lisa@insideoutrecovery.com and let me know.
