This week's topic is stress and how to manage stress during some of the most stressful times teachers have ever experienced. In addition to what is going on in their classroom, teachers have to deal with angry parents who are banning books and censoring what teachers can and cannot say. And add to all that, a war is going on that keeps most of us riveted to the horrifying images that words cannot describe. Kitty struggles to find anything new to say about stress management during the weeks that stress is the week's primary topic. But she has managed to find a new article to reference. It's not just for teachers. It is for anyone living in today's uncertain times. En 1978 yo estudiaba el primero de los entonces cinco cursos de Periodismo y empecé en agosto a trabajar en el periódico la Hoja del Lunes. Mi amigo Juan Francisco Santiago llevábamos un par de años acudiendo a la calle Juan Bravo, a la sede de Radio Popular, donde en la frecuencia modulada, de lunes a viernes de 5 a 6 de la tarde, Manolo Fernández realizaba su mítico “Toma Uno”, precedido de su amigo y valedor Julio Ruiz con su “Disco Grande. Hoy continuamos la serie dedicada a los discos que me compré en 1978 bajo prescripción del maestro de Tirso de Molina. Todas las canciones seleccionadas fueron pinchadas por Manolo en aquel año, incluso alguna como la elegida de Joe Walsh que iniciaba también una de esas cuñas de apertura magistrales, montadas a mano por el propio Manolo con el corta y pega en cintas abiertas de aquellos fantásticos magnetofones. Manolo estrenaba discos increíbles. Fue el primero en pinchar, entre otras grandes canciones, “Sultans Of Swing” versión single. Aquí suenan los grandes artistas del sello Asylum en su esplendor: Linda Ronstadt, Andrew Gold, Warren Zevon, Joe Walsh o Louise Goffin, la hija de Carole King, que grabó su primer disco. Manolo no cesaba, ni cesa de descubrirnos artistas y grupos, discos como el de Craig Fuller & Eric Kaz, con esa canción “Annabella” que fue un himno del programa, himno que Fernández recitó traducido. El 13 de abril pasado se cumplieron 75 años del nacimiento de Lowell George, líder de Little Feat, una de las bandas más importantes de la Historia del Rock y con la que grabó siete discos en estudio. Sus comienzos con la banda de Frank Zappa derivaron en la formación de Lowell George & The Factory y tras grabar algunas maquetas para The Doobie Brothers, terminó creando Little Feat junto al batería Richie Wayward y el teclista Billy Payne. George falleció prematuramente a los 34 años en 1979 cuando acababa de publicar su primer disco en solitario “Thanks I’ll Eat It Here”. Amigo y productor de Valerie Carter, amigo de Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, John Hall y Van Dyke Parks, entre otros, sus canciones han sido grabadas por Ronstadt, Carter, Nazareth, Van Halen, Nicolette Larson, etc. Su guitarra con ese toque tan característico suyo suena en discos de Browne, James Taylor, Howdy Moon, John. Cale… La lista de guitarristas admiradores de George es larga: Jimmy Page, Zappa, Bonnie Raitt, Ry Cooder, Jerry García… Ya se editó un álbum de homenaje con la participación de los mencionados, Browne, Raitt, Carter, más los propios Little Feat, J.D. In 1977 a singer I knew as a background singer released her first solo record, Just A Stone's Throw Away. She had been singing with some of my favorite artists. People like Linda Ronstadt, Don Henley, Little Feat, Jackson Browne, and James Taylor. Her name was Valerie Carter. She was 24. In 1980 Jackson Browne released a famous song, "That Girl Could Sing," which was likely about Valerie. She battled drug addiction for years. She died in 2017. She was 64. Track number 3 on that debut record is a song, "Heartache." Click here to listen to the song. Today's show title is a lyric from that song. Valerie, like you and me, knew heartache. Lowell George of Little Feat co-wrote the song. We're not going to end the year on a downer note. Instead, we're going to be optimistic. Not because we stick our head in the sand, but because we're strong enough to face the realities of our pain and heartache. And the reality that for some of us 2018 was a grand year of heartache. Valerie sang that lyric directly to Heartache. "Heartache, find another place to be. I'm tired of being your best friend." She's tired of providing the landing place for heartache. Tired of embracing heartache as her best friend. It's a breakup song with heartache. Is there any better time to give heartache the heave-ho? Here at the end of the year? Ditching heartache isn't nearly so neat and tidy. Would that we could just make up our mind to be done with it. Not so easy. 2018 brought some of us extraordinary heartache. I know some LTW listeners who lost spouses. Some who suffered betrayal from a spouse. Some who endured heavy financial strains. Others who lost jobs. Some endured the heartache of loved ones addicted to drugs. Some were diagnosed with diseases. Heartache knows no bounds. It touches all of us, in a variety of ways. Songs of trouble and heartache resonate with us because it's such a universal experience. As I was listening to Valerie sing the song responsible for today's podcast title, I thought of other songs. Ry Cooder's song, "Trouble, You Can't Fool Me" from his 1979 album, Bop Til You Drop. And there's the song I always think of by Mat Kerney, from his 2009 album, City Of Black & White. The song, "Closer To Love" contains the line, "We're all one phone call from our knees." It depicts a phone call that buckles us, causes us such heartache we can't even stand on our feet. Hailing from Arkansas, Fred Tackett worked as a side man on many Little Feat albums before becoming a full member of the band for Let It Roll. Along with his fine guitar work, Fred's mandolin and trumpet have become a featured part of the Little Feat sound.
