There's a murder mystery to be solved, in a creepy old house. The Doctor, Fitz and Compassion arrive, and this novel by Andy Lane and Justin Richards has a fascinating history, having originally been written without the Doctor. Andy joins us to reveal more. (With apologies for the varying sound quality on the interview)

Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

This week, Brendan, Nathan, Steven B and Johnny Spandrell penetrate the heart of the Vatican, only to discover that behind its dusty and arcane lore lies an eldritch horror that threatens the very idea of existence itself. It's Extremis. Notes and links The most important inspiration here is Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code (2003), a massively popular and widely-panned thriller about a dark secret that threatens the credibility of the Catholic Church itself (but probably not the one you're thinking of). Perhaps this review of the book will give you a good sense of its style. It turns out that the dark secret in The Da Vinci code was originally revealed in 1982 in a best-selling book called The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail (or in the US, more pithily, Holy Blood, Holy Grail). This book was, terrifyingly but unsurprisingly, co-written by our very own Henry Lincoln, co-writer of The Abominable Snowmen, The Web of Fear and The Dominators. Steven remembers the first Doctor talking about his religious beliefs in a passage from The Empire of Glass (1995) by Andy Lane. Here, in Chapter 6, the Doctor is talking to Galileo. “In short, sir, I am currently an agnostic, and by the time my life draws to its close, and I have travelled from one side of the universe to the other and seen every sight there is to see, I firmly expect to be an atheist. Does that answer your question?” In a recent episode of The Bjay BJ Game Show, Brendan and Bjay review a game called The Talos Principle, a video game set in a computer simulation which deals with questions of identity and religion. Nathan has a website called the Randomiser at therandomiser.net, which can help you pick a random Doctor Who story to watch, but which can also (more importantly, perhaps) reassure you that you're not living in a computer simulation. The properly randomised Doctor Who podcast which Nathan appeared on is called Pull to Open, with Pete Pachal and Chris Taylor. As a kind of public service, Steven alerts us to a 2015 article by Charlie Brooker about a group of German researchers created a version of Super Mario World in which Mario was self-aware and emotionally affected by his experiences in the game. Steven also draws our attention to a branch of philosophy concerned with the possibility that we might all be living in a computer simulation. This 2020 article in Scientific American sums up the state of play. Johnny refers to Kit Pedler's original conception of the Cybermen as a race of Star Monks — an idea that El Sandifer runs with in a productive and interesting way in her essay on The Tenth Planet. Johnny Spandrell takes aim at this story in an entertaining and insightful blog post on Extremis, written in 2018. Here's a link to the Character Options Series 10 action figure set, featuring the Doctor, Bill and a heavily made up Missy, for those of you who enjoy that kind of thing. And finally, here's Donna Summer singing about this story forty years early in Once Upon a Time…. Follow us Nathan is on Bluesky at @nathanbottomley.bsky.social and Brendan is at @retrobrendo.bsky.social, while Steven is on X at @steedstylin and Johnny is @JohnnySpandrell. It's first season came out early this year, under the title New Beginnings. Check it out. It will be back for a second season early in 2025. The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire has broadcast our hot takes on every new episode of Doctor Who since November last year, and it will be back again in 2025 for Season 2. Just two weeks ago, on Startling Barbara Bain, we faced what is perhaps the most memorable and terrifying episode of Space: 1999 ever with our usual mix of valour and prosecco. It's Dragon's Domain. And finally there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. This week, we visited a holographic jazz bar in Vegas in 1962 for a surpassingly brilliant episode of Deep Space Nine called His Way.

It's an all new That Real Blind Tech Show. With an epic week in tech, we got the entire gang here to recap it all. We kick things off about pickles, but unlike a dirty pickle, this story is about a frozen pickle.   We then get a little side tracked about mice, alligators, and gerbils as only That Real Blind Tech show can do. We then get a lesson about the streets of Japan.   We then discuss the issue with the latest Jaws update.   We then dive in to the debacle known as the Sonos update.   Apple and Open A.I. are rumored to be finalizing details to have ChatGPT in iOS 18. We got our iOS 18 accessibility enhancements announced the day before Global Accessibility Awareness Day. In iOS 18 you will be able to use custom phrases to trigger actions. Here is a list of all the new accessibility features mentioned by Apple coming in iOS 18.   Open A.I. has unveiled ChatGPT 4 Omni, and it is pretty impressive. And because one article cannot sum it all up, here's a second article discussing some of the other capabilities of ChatGPT 4o. Open A.I. will also be launching a Mac Desktop app, not available just yet as we have checked. ChatGPT will soon be able to see everything on your Mac or iPhone screen. Is this the beginning of the screen reader evolution? But the biggest thing coming out of Open A.I.'s announcements was Andy Lane showing off the next generation of vision as a blind person using ChatGPT 4Omni.   We then move on to discussing all the announcements that came out of Google IO. Android phones will now be able to tell if someone snatches your phone out of your hand. Gemini will also be getting better at understanding what is on your phone's screen. Google glass may be dead, but Google is working on a new prototype of glasses. Android phones will soon allow you to use your face to control your cursor. Who knew with the explosion of A.I. that it would lead to Google actually cleaning up its search? Google has a lot of new enhancements coming to Android tool Lookout.   We then spin the bottle and go around the table as most of us have been buying new things. Products discussed here include the new iPad Pro, Meta Ray bans, Zoom Essential H6, and more.   And it's more of Watcha Streaming, Watcha Reading.   To contact That Real Blind Tech Show, you can email us at ThatRealBlindTechShow@gmail.com, join our Facebook Group That Real Blind Tech Show, join us on the Twitter @BlindTechShow , or leave us an old school phone message at 929-367-1005.

Host Ed Crooks brings you the first of two special episodes recorded live from Wood Mackenzie's Hydrogen ConferenceIndustry leaders and energy analysts gathered recently for the second annual hydrogen conference hosted by Wood Mackenzie, where they dissected the potential of hydrogen in the energy mix. Join host Ed Crooks in the first of two special episodes from the conference, with part two coming out tomorrow. The conference presented an opportunistic forum to discuss how hydrogen, with all its potential and challenges, can shape the course of a decarbonized energy industry. Hydrogen, once considered the energy of the future, has finally claimed its position in the present reality of decarbonized energy systems. Fuelling the global discourse on climate change, the conversation has shifted to the pivotal role that hydrogen and renewable energy solutions can play in the clean energy transition. Andy Lane, the Vice President of Hydrogen and Carbon capture in the UK for BP, spoke on a panel and emphasized the influence of China on the future of the renewable energy industry. Lane argued that China's ability to generate solar power and produce electrolyzers at a cheaper rate than most countries could instigate healthy competition that benefits everyone. He also highlighted that the renewable energy industry should not approach the global supply chain with a defensive mindset but rather learn to work effectively within it. However, Lane raised concerns about the potential threat this presents to European businesses, despite the overall positive impact on global warming reduction. What about those in the US? What impact is the IRA having? Rick Beuttel from Bloom Energy and Mona Bagat of KBR Consulting talk about the government incentives, the US' place in the low-carbon hydrogen race as well as the costs when it comes to Green and Blue Hydrogen production. This conference also provided an insight into technology leaders navigating the challenges of a rapidly evolving energy market. Ines Kraft from the German electrolyzer company, Sunfire, explained how they recently installed the world's first multi-megawatt high-temperature electrolyzer for green hydrogen production. The ongoing transformation of the energy industry - and the shift towards hydrogen as an essential part of that change - presents both challenges and opportunities for energy companies around the globe. The rising prominence of hydrogen will require concerted efforts to surmount obstacles related to costs, regulations, and infrastructure. Finally, we wrap up part 1 from the conference with Andre Pina from EDP Renewables discussing opportunities for an international market in hydrogen and its derivatives traded around the world. Don't forget part 2 from the conference is out tomorrow, subscribe so you don't miss an episode! What you will learn about: How Helen and Andy met, and if they psychoanalyze one another  What Andy has learned in the 100 peer reviewed journal articles he has worked on The powerful impact of sad or depressed thoughts and how it can really affect your ability to run well How important it is to go for a run if you are in a difficult period of your life Why the fear of failure is not necessary a bad thing, and how to limit the pressure you feel for a race when you have told so many people you are going the race Why you should have some kind of effort involved with you goals, rather than exclusively time goals Why EVERYONE has a self confidence issue, and why knowing that makes us feel like we are not alone How we are all connected emotionally to food, and guilt can be present even while we are eating food we enjoy The relationship between food and performance, and how runners can be affected by a need to be thin The strategies to use to get through the hardest parts of the race, including imagery of a runner you admire (really interesting!) Running with music can actually help you run faster if you find the right rhythm What to do if you have a bad race; how jumping in another race COULD be a good idea, in the right circumstance  Why having a break after a great race will help you to reassess and think up a new goal, if you go back into it without much rest, you are going to struggle   Inspirational Quotes: You get trapped in the event. You might be the expert, but you are still trapped in the event. You do need to hold back when you are giving advice out, and it is difficult to take advice as well, no matter how well intended it is.-Andy Lane A small mark of depression can lead to all sorts of devastating or negative results that go on from that.-Andy Lane Everybody needs a bag of tricks to identify and use in the dark moments.-Andy Lane Your emotions are evolutionary functions to tell you what is important- Andy Lane Human beings are competitive, so we have competed with ourself by saying that (a time we want), so we can easily think we are failures.-Helen Lane Everyone underneath has an underlining self esteem issue, they are not confident in all situations- Helen Lane Everyone has a little bit of an emotional problem with eating; they eat when they are stressed, bored, not when they are hungry, overeat in social settings...we all have this awareness with food, almost a preoccupation with food.-Helen Lane If I look at social media, I would not know what to eat.- Andy Lane If you want to find an angry person, find a hungry person!- Andy Lane Rethink what fatigue means. Fatigue is an indicator you are working hard. It is not to be feared, it is accepting that you are working hard.- Andy Lane It is very difficult to get from the very highs and maintain those highs, it's unlikely you are going to have another Olympic Gold Medal winning moment two months after.-Andy Lane Resources: Last week's episode with Dean Karnazes Subscribe to the Running for Real Podcast on your favorite player: Apple Podcasts (iTunes) Stitcher Castbox Overcast Spotify Google Play Tina4Real Podcast  Running for Real Superstars Community Support Tina through her Patreon Page Buy a Running for Real T-shirt, Tank, or Hat Andy on Twitter Helen on Twitter Winning Lane website Chrissie Wellington interview Paul Sinton Hewitt interview Check out the Running for Real Podcast Series, sponsoring this episode today: Beginners Mental Toughness Training Marathon Training Coming Back From Injuries Running Nutrition Running Through and After Pregnancy   Thanks for Listening!
