THEY'RE FIXIN' TO CHANGE YOUR MIND—The people behind The Bitter Southerner are many things but they are not, they will remind you, actually bitter. The tongue is planted quite firmly in the cheek here. But The Bitter Southerner is, for sure, like it says on the website, “a beacon for the American South and a bellwether for the nation.” Sure, why not.But what started out as an ambitious e-newsletter has evolved now into a … project. Read The Bitter Southerner and you realize how ambitious and radical their business—and message—truly is. This is not just a brand but a movement, a way to talk about the South and Southern things, but through a lens many of us, through our own biases and ignorance, won't quite see. And the world is listening. Stories from The Bitter Southerner have either won or been nominated for eight James Beard Awards. And now they are up for a National Magazine Award for General Excellence. We spoke to co-founder Kyle Tibbs Jones about the genesis of the magazine, about what it means, about the community it has found and spawned, and about the future, not just of the brand but, maybe, of the South, and where The Bitter Southerner fits into it all.—This episode is made possible by our friends at Freeport Press. THE BRAND CALLED US—In the summer of 1995, I got an offer I couldn't refuse. It came from my guests today, Alan Webber and Bill Taylor, the founding editors of Fast Company, widely acknowledged as one of the magazine industry's great success stories. Their vision for the magazine was an exercise in thinking different. Nothing we did hewed to the conventional wisdom of magazine-making. Our founders came from politics and activism born in the ivy halls of Harvard. Our HQ was far from the center of the magazine world, in Boston's North End—“leave the pages, take the cannolis.” And Fast Company was not a part of the five families of magazine publishing. It wouldn't have worked if it was.  I was one of the first people Alan and Bill hired, and as the magazine's founding art director, I could tell Fast Company was going to be big. And it was big. Huge, in fact. Shortly after its launch, a typical issue of the magazine routinely topped out at almost 400 pages. We had to get up to speed, and fast. Its mission was big, too. Bill and Alan's plan sounded simple: to offer rules for radicals that would be inspiring and instructive; to encourage their audience to think bigger about what they might achieve for their companies and themselves, and to provide tools to help us all succeed in work … and in life. Their mantra: Work is personal. The effect, however, was even bigger. The magazine was a blockbuster hit, winning ASME awards for General Excellence and Design. It was Ad Age's 1995 Launch of the Year. Bill and Alan were named Adweek's editors of the year in 1999. It even spawned its own reader-generated social network, the Company of Friends, that counted over 40,000 members worldwide. And it brought together an extraordinary team of creatives who, to this day, carry on the mission in their own way—including the founders. Nearly thirty years after the launch of the magazine, Alan is currently serving his second term as the mayor of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Bill is the best-selling author of Mavericks at Work, among other books, and continues to lead the conversation on transforming business. We often said that Fast Company was the one that would ruin us for all future jobs. It was a moment in time that I and my colleagues will treasure forever. I am thrilled to be able to share that story with you today.—This episode is made possible by our friends at Mountain Gazette, Commercial Type, and Freeport Press.  This is a vintage selection from 2006The BanterThe Guys talk about Long Island wines and what the future may hold. When is a wine like a snarky adolescent? The ConversationThe Restaurant Guys have Colman Andrews, editor-in-chief of Saveur magazine, to talk about the often unsung region of Campbeltown scotch. Colman goes over the broad strokes then gets into the nitty gritty details of what makes scotch so varied and gives it a sense of place. He also gives his thoughts about the next big beverage on the horizon. Was he correct? The Inside TrackThe Guys and Colman are in agreement about the culture and traditions around food and beverage being an integral part of the enjoyment. Colman wrote, “I like the trappings of imbibing, the company it keeps, the restaurants and cafes and bars and the people who gather in them. I drink, frankly, because I like the glow, the softening of hard edges, the faint anesthesia. I like the way my mind races one zigzag step ahead of logic. I like that flash flood of the unexpected, utter joy that courses quickly through me between this glass and that one.”Mark: Did you really say that? Colman: I must have been drinking when I wrote that.  -Colman Andrews on The Restaurant Guys Podcast 2006BioColman Andrews started off as a restaurant reviewer. He went on to write for lifestyle magazines, guest review for the Los Angeles Times and served as senior editor for New West magazine. In 1994, Andrews became a co-founder of Saveur magazine and later editor-in-chief. During his tenure, Andrews won six James Beard Journalism Awards, and in 2000, Saveur became the first food magazine to win the American Society of Magazine Editors' award for General Excellence. He left Saveur in 2006, becoming the restaurant columnist for Gourmet where Reichl was editor-in-chief.He has written numerous cookbooks captivating the cuisine of specific regions and cultures (Catalan, The Riviera, Ireland, Italy, etc) as well as a book about Ferran Adria.InfoSaveur magazinehttps://www.saveur.com/To get the recipe for Caipirinha, email TheGuys@RestaurantGuysPodcast.comOur Sponsors The Heldrich Hotel & Conference Centerhttps://www.theheldrich.com/ Magyar Bankhttps://www.magbank.com/ Withum Accountinghttps://www.withum.com/ Our Places Stage Left Steakhttps://www.stageleft.com/ Catherine Lombardi Restauranthttps://www.catherinelombardi.com/ Stage Left Wineshophttps://www.stageleftwineshop.com/ To hear more about food, wine and the finer things in life:https://www.instagram.com/restaurantguyspodcast/https://www.facebook.com/restaurantguysReach Out to The Guys!TheGuys@restaurantguyspodcast.com**Become a Restaurant Guys Regular and get two bonus episodes per month, bonus content and Regulars Only events.**Click Below! https://www.buzzsprout.com/2401692/subscribe

CHIC, BUT MAKE IT NICE—It's a cliché because it's true: in the fashion world, you've got your show ponies and you've got your workhorses. We mean it as a compliment when we say that Samira Nasr truly earned her place at the helm of the 156-year-old institution, Harper's Bazaar. Don't get us wrong; Samira is seriously glamorous—she's the kind of woman who phrases like “effortless chic” were invented to describe. But she did not cruise to her current perch on connections and camera-readiness alone. Rather, she worked her way up, attending J-school at NYU, then making her way through the fashion closets of Vogue, Mirabella, Vanity Fair, InStyle, and Elle—where we met in the trenches, and got to see firsthand how she mixes old-school, roll-up-your-sleeves work ethic and her own fresh vision. When Samira got the big job at Bazaar in 2020, she became the title's first-ever Black editor-in-chief. The Bazaar she has rebuilt is as close as a mainstream fashion magazine gets to a glossy art mag, but it is far from chilly. As she has long put it, “I just want to bring more people with me to the party.” Which, when you think about it, is a brilliant mantra for a rapidly shifting era in media and culture. How to keep a legacy fashion magazine going circa 2025? Drop the velvet rope. The timing for this mantra could not have been better. After her first year in the role, Bazaar took home its first-ever National Magazine Award for General Excellence. In our interview, Samira talked about remaking one of fashion's most legendary magazines — plus, jeans, budgets, and even the odd parenting tip. The previous quakes occurred at depths of 2.5 and 5.2 miles. The U.S. Geological Survey reported 115 people felt Sunday's quake, mostly in Buford and Sugar Hill, while 163 people felt Thursday's quake, with reports from as far as Peachtree Corners. STORY 2: ARRESTED: 61-Year-Old Woman Accused of Setting Norcross Homes on Fire Hong T. Huynh, 61, was arrested by Dunwoody police on Friday for allegedly setting two homes on fire in Norcross on June 1. The current headquarters, built in 1977 and expanded in 1988, no longer meets the department's needs. The new facility, expected to be completed in 2026, will consolidate off-site police teams and include a parking deck. The site, located at 800 Hi Hope Road, will replace the existing headquarters and E911 facilities. Funding for the project comes from the 2023 SPLOST Program. STORY 5: Moderna Announces Good Results From Trial of Combo COVID/Flu Vaccine Moderna has announced positive results from trials of its experimental mRNA-1083 vaccine, which targets both COVID-19 and influenza. The vaccine showed promising immune responses in older adults, equal to current vaccines targeting either flu or COVID-19. While not ready for this flu season, the vaccine could provide more convenient immunization options and improve compliance. It combines components from Moderna's seasonal influenza vaccine candidate and next-generation COVID-19 vaccine candidate. Safety profiles appear similar to single-virus vaccines. The potential challenge lies in encouraging vaccine-weary Americans to embrace the dual-purpose vaccine. The True Citizen of Waynesboro received the Freedom of Information Award, and The Brunswick News, Valdosta Daily Times, and Newnan Times Herald claimed General Excellence awards in their respective divisions. STORY 7: Burt Jones: Economic worries will help Trump win back presidency During a speech at the Georgia Press Association's annual conference, Lt. Gov. Burt Jones forecasted that inflation would bolster support for former President Donald Trump's potential 2024 White House bid. Jones emphasized that while the 2020 election was driven by personality, the upcoming election will focus on economic issues. He pointed to rising gasoline prices and other inflation-related concerns under President Joe Biden's administration. Jones highlighted the importance of the economy in recent polling data, with 29% of respondents prioritizing it over other issues. Additionally, he commended the General Assembly for passing bills addressing private-school vouchers and reforming Georgia's Certificate of Need process for healthcare facilities. THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER— In early April, what's left of the magazine industry gathered at Terminal 5 to see who would win this year's National Magazine Awards—the ASMEs. Throughout the evening, the usual suspects stepped up to accept their Alexander Calder brass elephants—the ‘Ellies'—on behalf of their teams at The Atlantic, New York, and The New York Times Magazine. Then came the award for General Excellence, Service and Lifestyle—a category that covers every food, fashion, and fitness magazine in the business. And the Ellie went to… content juggernaut Highsnobiety—a sneaker blog-turned-cool kid media amalgam that encompasses a twice-annual $20-per-issue print magazine, plus a flood of social media, a website that is also an e-commerce platform, and a creative agency that does 360-degree marketing and storytelling for brands. Before the crowd could start scratching their graying heads, a Billie Eilish lookalike in a gray Thom Brown skirt-and-pant suit took to the dais. There were plenty of people in that room who had never given Highsnobiety much, if any, thought. But in that moment, this woman, Willa Bennett, Highsnobiety's 30-year-old editor-in-chief, had officially become a force to be reckoned with. Not only that, but Highsnobiety's business model, which bends rules that had long been sacrosanct in magazine journalism, suddenly appeared to have won the seal of approval from the oldest of the old guard.  The post at Highsnobiety was a major leap for Bennett. Just two years ago, she was the social media manager at GQ. Our friends who worked with her there tell us they thought of her as “the industry's little sister”—hungry, passionate, and looking to translate the magic of magazines to a new generation. They said that even though she's disrupting the magazine as we once knew it, at heart Bennett is a “a magazine junkie who really venerates  the old ways.” And now the surprise win has put her in the spotlight of the establishment media, with The New York Times Styles running a portrait of Bennett in her signature suit-and-tie look on its cover. The win inspired a segment on the Slate Culture Gabfest in which the hosts pondered, “What Is a Magazine Now?”Over in Spreadlandia, we thought, Why not turn that question directly to Willa Bennett herself? In the end, this conversation left us feeling more optimistic than usual about the future of media. It also made us feel old as shit. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did.—This episode is a special collboration with our friends at The Spread and is made possible by our friends at Mountain Gazette, Commercial Type, and Lane Press. Abby's vision for the publication stems from a simple yet profound idea: to make the world feel smaller and more interconnected by focusing on the unique, yet universal aspects of different locales.Abby shared, "We started Stranger's Guide to create a publication that was rooted in the idea of place and exploring how different places feel to those people who are living there." She continued, "What does it mean for the individual who's going to work, taking their kids to school, making dinner? We aim to dig into what all of those big global themes mean for daily life."The essence of Stranger's Guide lies in its commitment to telling the stories of a place through the eyes of those who know it best—the local writers and photographers. Each issue is a deep dive into a single location, crafted by at least 80% of contributors from that area. This approach ensures that the narrative remains authentic and grounded in the community's lived experiences.Stranger's Guide isn't just about the exotic or the familiar; it's about bridging the gap between them. It offers readers a multifaceted portrait of a place, mixing human rights, history, sports, and culture to enrich our understanding of the world. It's about seeing the big picture and the tiny, essential details through a lens that respects and values every culture's unique contributions and challenges.By reading Stranger's Guide, we don't just learn about different parts of the world; we connect with them on a human level. It's a reminder that despite our differences, we share common threads—family, work, joy, struggle. This connection fosters empathy and, ultimately, a more compassionate worldview. In essence, Abby's work with Stranger's Guide serves as a powerful reminder of journalism's role in society—not just to inform but to connect us. By focusing on the universal yet unique experiences of communities around the globe, Abby and her team invite us to celebrate our shared humanity. This, indeed, is journalism as a form of superpower, the kind that nurtures understanding and respect across borders.AI Episode Summary1. Devin appreciates the Stranger's Guide for offering deep insights into different cultures for a fraction of the cost of traveling, underscoring the importance of understanding human commonalities and differences.8. Abby emphasizes the publication's focus on creating beautiful, memorable issues that encourage people to explore and understand places they might not physically visit.9. The interview explores Abby's superpower of tackling challenging topics and fostering ecosystems that contribute to community and global understanding.10. Finally, Abby provides details on how to access and support The Stranger's Guide, encouraging subscriptions and highlighting the publication as a unique gift option. How to Develop an Ecosystems Approach As a SuperpowerAbby identifies her superpower as her Ecosystems Approach. This involves engaging deeply with communities, both local and professional, to orchestrate collaborative efforts that leverage diverse strengths and viewpoints toward common goals.Abby's superpower lies in her ability to see and cultivate the interconnectedness within communities. Whether it's in her role at Stranger's Guide or in community volunteer work, she excels at identifying and mobilizing diverse stakeholders around shared challenges. This approach not only fosters a deeper understanding among diverse groups but also drives them towards practical, impactful collaborations.A striking example of Abby's superpower in action can be seen in her work on the Ukraine guide for Stranger's Guide. During a particularly intense period marked by conflict and displacement, Abby and her team strategically partnered with Impact Justice to sponsor a series focused on incarceration experiences around the world, including a powerful story about a prison in Ukraine. This initiative, by weaving together the narratives of various communities, illustrated how Abby's ecosystems approach can illuminate shared human experiences across different contexts.Abby suggests that to develop a similar capability, one should start by engaging deeply with their local community. She emphasizes the power of listening and establishing connections with people from diverse backgrounds. This groundwork fosters the ability to understand different perspectives and find common ground, crucial skills for building effective partnerships and collaborative projects.By following Abby's example and advice, you can make an Ecosystems Approach a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileAbby Rapoport (she/her):Cofounder and Publisher, Stranger's GuideAbout Stranger's Guide: Founded in 2018 by Editor-in-Chief Kira Brunner Don and Publisher Abby Rapoport, Stranger's Guide uses place-based stories to investigate how culture, power and access to different freedoms inform our lives and identities. Enjoy it Looks like the corrupt cops win again! Fortunately or unfortunately for the American public Democrats need to get it together and call for a mass expulsion of all these Republican insurrectionists in Congress! If only Nancy pelosi hadn't allowed them to be sworn in just 6 days after the January 6th insurrection, they wouldn't be terrorizing us by legislating against us! Same thing with the Supreme Court justices, why didn't Democrats get it together and call for all six Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v Wade to resign, or be removed for perjuring themselves under oath that Roe v Wade was settled law? I often think about how Democrats usually fail to do the right thing, because the political contributions will be so great if they don't do their job! It's very discouraging, frustrating because women have lost our reproductive choice under a Democrat. An old white dude who don't really fight that hard for us IMHO PS In response to immigration, as you may recall it was the Republicans who, bowing to pressure from the orange menace to society, turned down what was the most brutal immigration bill imaginable, legislation that only a national socialist from 1930s Germany would love. It's a blessing in disguise, I think, that it was not passed. Since it is election year, Republicans were not allowed to vote for any bill, out of fear it would make the Democrats look effective. Republicans do not care about any policy issues whatsoever all they care is about sabotaging this country and making sure that no legislation is passed, blocking everything they're purely saboteurs. That's what we get when over 160 Republican insurrectionists were never held accountable for their role in the January 6th insurrection. By the way according to senior border patrol agent Jen budd, there's no invasion at the border. It's called a backlog from when diaper Donna so cruelly shut down the border and put kids in cages you guys remember that??? What a disgrace!! What a cruel country USA has become My case is an important civil rights case, comprised of an illegal raid carried out by FIFTY Pima sheriffs on August 30th of last year. It is unlawful because they arrested me on a search warrant in literally 3 minutes flat, cuffed me and took me to Pima County Jail; then they not only falsified the time of my arrest by many hours, they fabricated evidence to convict me and make me rot in jail. Welcome to episode #889 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #889. Let's delve into the kaleidoscopic journey of Kevin Kelly, a titan of technology and innovation, who launched Wired magazine in 1993 (and happens to be one of my favorite writers and Thinkers about "what's next?"). After seven years as Executive Editor, he still holds the fort as Senior Maverick. Twice during his reign, Wired clinched the National Magazine Awards for General Excellence - the magazine industry's equivalent to Oscars. Flashback to 1984-1990, Kevin wore the hats of both publisher and editor of Whole Earth Review, a journal serving unconventional conceptual news. With Kevin at the helm, it earned the distinction of being the first consumer magazine to cover virtual reality, ecological restoration, and Internet culture, among other trend-setting topics. His 1988 creation, Signal, evaluated emerging digital technologies, effectively setting the stage for Wired magazine. Later, in 2003, he crafted the Cool Tools website to feature daily tool reviews, culminating in a bestseller book, and eventually, the weekly recommendation list, Recomendo, boasting over 60,000 subscribers (of which I am one... and never miss an issue). Kevin's early digital footprint can be traced back to 1985 when he helped lay the foundation for The WELL, one of the pioneers in forming online communities. His tech experiments didn't stop there - he launched Cyberthon in 1990, the first-ever 24-hour virtual reality event, and co-founded the annual Hackers' Conference. Kevin's pen dances across a variety of subjects, from machines turning biological (Out of Control, 1994) to digital economy rules (New Rules for the New Economy, 1998) and the inevitable technological trends of the future (The Inevitable, 2016). His works echo in pieces like 1000 True Fans, and his latest book, Excellent Advice For Living. With a knack for photography, Kevin's snapshots have found home in Life and other national magazines. His nomadic photography journeys culminated in a 3-volume magnum opus, Vanishing Asia, preserving the fading cultures of Asia through 9,000 pictures. As a founding board member of The Long Now Foundation, Kevin promotes long-term thinking, epitomized by their 10,000-year clock and library project. Kevin Kelly's journey illustrates a passion for innovation and an unyielding curiosity about the future. I couldn't be more excited to talk with him. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 1:01:49. For Senior Fellow Vandana Kumar (Class XXXIX), storytelling is integral to life. From the stories told to her by her maternal grandmother about protecting their property under the British Raj to her mother's telling of the non-violent resistance formed in her grandfather's house, inspiration came early. With the confidence and valuable life lessons sparked by these two women, Vandana came to the U.S. to embark on her own journey of storytelling. Today, Vandana Kumar is a publishing executive with a 35-year track record in the industry. She leads the India Currents Foundation as President and CEO. As a new immigrant, she co-founded India Currents magazine in 1987 and published an award-winning print magazine from April 1987 to Dec 2017. Provide them a reputation to live up to. Habit is far more dependable than inspiration. Don't focus on getting into shape. Focus on becoming the kind of person who never misses a workout. "Every great and difficult thing has required a strong sense of optimism," Prototype your life. Try stuff instead of making grand plans. The best way to learn anything is to try to teach what you know. Don't create things to make money; make money so you can create things. The reward for good work is more work. The more you are interested in others, the more interesting they'll find you. To be interesting, be interested. Promptness is a sign of respect. The consistency of your endeavors (exercise, companionship, work) is more important than the quantity. Nothing beats small things done every day, which is way more important than what you do occasionally.

Paul Carroll spent 17 years at the Wall Street Journal as an editor and reporter. The paper nominated him twice for Pulitzer Prizes. In 1996, he founded Context, a thought-leadership magazine on the strategic importance of information technology that was a finalist for the National Magazine Award for General Excellence. He is a co-founder of the Devil's Advocate Group consulting firm. He is also a co-author of several books including, The New Killer Apps, Billion Dollar Lessons, and the author of Big Blues.   Key Takeaways How did Paul get his start in insurance? Paul's mantra is to have smart people in safe projects. What do people get wrong about innovation? Paul shares what it means to have a “Devil's Advocate” idea. Before you make a big leap (and investment) on an innovative project, make sure everyone in leadership is first on the same page and you have a devil's advocate asking smart questions. What happens when an industry digitalizes? Remember, with the introduction of readily accessible cameras in our phones, Kodak ended up disappearing overnight. What sections of the insurance industry are on the verge of being disrupted? Paul thinks it's going to be insurance claims. When CEOs get to a certain stage of their career, they're worried about how to keep things status quo (and not disrupt) until they can safely retire. How can technology companies best drive change in the insurance industry today? What does the world of insurance look like 10–15 years from now? What does Paul wish he'd known sooner in his career? Paul shares a message on why young talent should join the industry. AI is going to find its way into insurance.   Keep Getting Better Paul on LinkedIn The New Killer Apps: How Large Companies Can Out-Innovate Start-Ups  Billion Dollar Lessons: What You Can Learn From the Most Inexcusable Business Failures of the Last 25 Years  Big Blues: The Unmaking of IBM   Quotes   “The biggest problem with strategy is people don't have a devil's advocate who is poking holes in strategies.”   “Nothing really innovative can happen unless the CEO drives it, and the CEO can only focus on so many things at a time.”   “Insurance is as inefficient of an industry I've ever come across in my travels. Way too much paper involved, way too much process, things that could happen quickly wind up taking a long time.”

Episode Notes Welcome to Circle of Willis, my podcast about science and the scientists who do it, brought to you by generous folks at VQR, the Center for Media and Citizenship, and WTJU Radio at the University of Virginia here in Charlottesville. Folks, sometimes the chaos swirls and the lights dim. Sometimes things go very wrong and we don’t know what to do with ourselves. Sometimes those who’ve dedicated their lives to helping don’t know how to help, or, more likely these days, they don’t have the tools they need. And despite what you may have heard, laughter is not the best medicine. But in Part 2 of our conversation, my guest TIM CUNNINGHAM is here to remind us that sometimes laughter is the only medicine available, that laughter can catalyze the kinds of social connections we need most during our times of trial, and that laughter might even make those medicines that are the best more effective. Maybe that’s why Pablo Neruda once wrote, Take bread away from me, if you wish Take air away But do not take from me your laughter Humor has an almost mystical power to make life a little better, sometimes a LOT better. That’s why, in addition to being the VP for Practice and Innovation at Emory Healthcare, a Registered Nurse, and a Dr. of Public Health, Tim Cunningham is a professional Clown, trained at the Dell'Arte International School of Physical Theatre up in Northern California, and a board member of CLOWNS WITHOUT BORDERS, which you are going to hear all about in just a few moments. Tim is going to tell us how being a professional clown has informed his work, world view, and personal life, and how all of that converged in all too real moments of life and death in a time of pandemic. ———————— Folks, the Music on Circle of Willis is written and performed by TOM STAUFFER and his band THE NEW DRAKES… For information about how to purchase their music, check the “Music if Circle of Willis” page at circleofwillispodcast.com Circle of Willis is Produced by SIVA VAIDHYANATHAN and brought to you by VQR and the Center for Media and Citizenship at the University of Virginia… And that Circle of Willis is a member of the VIRGINIA AUDIO COLLECTIVE!
