In this greatest hits episode, we're revisiting one of the most powerful communication tools I teach—one that's both simple and transformative. If you've ever walked away from a conversation feeling misunderstood, reactive, or like your needs weren't truly seen, this episode is for you. It's not just about what you say. It's about the lens you're using to listen. I'm breaking down why the perspective you bring into a conversation—the emotional framing you carry—can change everything. You'll learn how noticing your “lens” helps you shift your energy, change the direction of the dialogue, and respond in ways that bring more clarity, calm, and connection. From the sneaky effects of internalized patriarchy to how we're conditioned to live “leftovers lives,” this episode is packed with both mindset shifts and practical tools you can apply right away. Grab a journal, take a walk, or just listen with curiosity—and let's explore how small shifts in perspective create big changes in communication. ✨ Episode at a Glance Why communication feels so hard (even though we do it every day) What it means to “notice your lens”—and why it matters The connection between your emotions and how you hear your partner A coaching challenge to shift your perspective and improve conversations How internalized patriarchy shapes how we listen, respond, and prioritize our needs An invitation to live a 5-star life instead of a “leftovers life”

If you enjoy eating nuts – good for you! Nuts are healthy. But you might be surprised to hear just how healthy they are - and you don't have to eat very many to get the benefits. This episode begins with a look at a fascinating study on nuts that has been going on for decades. https://www.herbazest.com/news/nut-consumption-may-prolong-life “It's right on the tip of my tongue!” We have all had that experience of not being able to recall a word but feel like it is just out of reach. It's different than simply not being able to recall something because you have forgotten it. This phenomenon is something people actually study and since it is something that has happened to you, I am sure you will find this fascinating. My guest is Anne Cleary, a professor of psychology at Colorado State University. Her research examines odd memory phenomena like déjà vu and these tip of the tongue experiences. She is author of a book called Tip of the Tongue States: Retrieval, Metacognition, and Experience (https://amzn.to/4eLbuST) Are you good at making conversation? Do you know how to assert yourself without being argumentative? Do you tend to talk too much when less would be better? Do you really listen to the other person or just wait for your chance to talk? Being good at conversation is a critical skill and one of the real experts at it is here to help. Jefferson Fisher is a lawyer and sought after speaker on the topic of verbal communication – and he is author of the bestselling book The Next Conversation: Argue Less, Talk More (https://amzn.to/3IpnddR). “What I fear is a lot of executives are chasing things that may not really help their workers or help their environment, because they haven't really had that two-way engagement about what healthcare workers need.” -Christopher Friese   In this SEE YOU NOW Insight from Episode 65: Sending Out an S.O.S., national nursing workforce expert and healthcare safety researcher Christopher Friese sounds the alarm: without listening directly to healthcare workers, even well-meaning policies may fall short of making a difference.   Nurses experience rates of burnout, trauma, and suicide that exceed both the general population and even physicians. Yet stigma, fear of licensing consequences, and unsupportive systems too often prevent them from getting the help they need.   Friese shares how the Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act is transforming national policy and shifting the conversation around workforce mental health, but he's clear that legislation alone isn't enough.   What's needed, Friese explains, is genuine two-way engagement between leaders and frontline clinicians. To protect and sustain the healthcare workforce, we must remove barriers, reimagine environments, and build cultures of safety, trust, and well-being together.  To listen to this Insight clip's full episode visit SEE YOU NOW Podcast Episode 65: Sending out an S.O.S. at APPLE, SPOTIFY, or YOUTUBE or at your favorite streaming platform. We say the word iconic a lot, but it really does apply to this week's guest Cynthia Nixon!  After starting her career as a child actor, in her early 30s Cynthia took the role of Miranda Hobbs in ‘Sex and The City' and not only did her life change, but the show's conversations around dating and sexuality changed the lives of women across the world. Off screen Cynthia also changed the game when she came out in the early 00s.  As she reprises the role of Miranda in the third season of ‘And Just Like That' - which you can watch exclusively in the UK on SKY and NOW - Cynthia joins me in Paris for a great chat that looks back on her career and her incredible advocacy for the LGBTQIA+ community.  We talk about how Cynthia almost lost the role of Miranda, getting with nuns (hey Rosie O'Donnell!), how you can come of age at any time, and the unforgettable chat on the set of ‘Sex and The City' that changed her life.  It's crazy to think when Cynthia came out the only out queer women were her and Ellen, and whilst this episode shows how far we have come with LGBTQIA+ visibility I hope - especially given the world we are living in right now - is shows much further we need to go and how so many of our long fought for rights need protecting this pride month and beyond.  If you love this episode as much as I do, get in touch with me across socials @joshsmithhosts as I always love hearing from you. Today we are joined by an up and coming talent you are going to become obsessed with, Ellis Howard.  Ellis has been treading the theatre boards for a while including in the Olivier nominated, ‘To Kill A Mockingbird' and pulling together an incredible screenwriting career but now he's about to become a role model to many, starring in the exceptional BBC drama, ‘What It Feels Like For A Girl'. Based on the powerful memoir by previous Reign guest, Paris Lees (head back to episode 18) the show follows Ellis's character Bryon in the year 2000 trying to break out of their small town and start their queer journey, which eventually leads to Byron transitioning.  Today we talk about how Ellis landed a role that really changed his life in so many ways and how he went from “running away from himself at 100 miles per hour,” growing up queer in a working class background to embracing his identity fully.  When I say I loved talking to Ellis, I mean it with my whole gay heart because sometimes there is nothing more comforting than sitting across from a fellow queer and having a chat that really speaks to you.  So I hope wherever you are, however you identify, something in this great chat resonates with you. And if you love this chat please get in touch with me across socials @joshsmithhosts as I always love hearing from you. I'll see you next week for another episode of ‘Reign'. Love, Josh x P.S. Celeste Headlee: journalist, bestselling author, NPR host, and one of TED's most-watched speakers (31 million views+) has spent decades studying the art (and science) of conversation. But she didn't always get it right. In fact, she says she used to be “the worst.” In this episode, Celeste shares how she rewired her communication style, what most people get wrong about connection, and the powerful tools anyone can use to become a better conversationalist. Celeste shares: How to start a conversation when you don't know what to say Why the common advice about conversation (like “maintain eye contact”) doesn't actually work The real difference between debate and discussion + why we're confusing the two The surprising neuroscience behind great conversation (and why voice matters more than words) The truth about curiosity + how to practice it (even if it doesn't come naturally) How neural coupling creates the feeling of being seen and understood What small talk really does for your brain + why it's not so “small” after all The simple trick she uses to diffuse conflict and build connection in just 3 questions How to stop trying to “win” arguments and start learning from disagreement Why younger generations are craving connection more than ever (and what's getting in the way) The power of follow-up questions + how they make people feel heard What we're getting wrong about inclusion and how tiny micro-interactions create belonging Why performative listening is worse than not listening at all How to say “I don't know” in a way that builds trust and authority Why smart people often struggle in conversation and what to do about it Book Rec:  Bleak House by Charles Dickens Follow Celeste Headlee here. That story in particular really brought to life the impact that authentic, collaborative growth can have in a school setting.Throughout our talk, we kept coming back to the same core idea: coaching relationships thrive on strong communication, mutual trust, and genuine respect. It was a powerful reminder of what's possible when partnerships are built on those foundations. If you're curious about what it looks like to walk the path of coaching—from the Intensive Instructional Coaching Institute, through The Impact Cycle, Introduction to Leadership Coaching, and 1:1 Impact Coaching—you'll want to tune in to hear Mark's journey firsthand.Thank you for being a part of our community. Feedback: We love hearing from you! Coaching Conversations with Jim Knight

In this episode of Coaching Conversations, Jessica Wise and I explore how instructional coaches and teachers can collaboratively engage with data to drive meaningful improvements in teaching and learning. I use the metaphor of viewing art to highlight an essential truth: data, like a painting, can be seen from multiple perspectives, and the richest insights come from exploring it together.Throughout our conversation, we discuss why frequent data collection—beyond just standardized tests—is critical for understanding instructional effectiveness. We also examine the core elements of effective coaching: mutual respect, trust, and open, dialogical conversations that empower teachers rather than evaluate them.Technology, when used thoughtfully, can enhance data analysis, making it easier to track progress and inform next steps. However, the key to impactful coaching lies in the way we communicate about data—providing specific, non-attributive feedback that sparks reflection and growth. We wrap up the episode with practical strategies for fostering a coaching culture where data becomes a tool for learning rather than judgment—helping educators feel supported, challenged, and inspired to keep growing.Thank you for being a part of our community. Feedback: We love hearing from you! So, get ready for more nuggets of wisdom!  As well as being very wise, Hayley knows a thing or two about starring in a blockbuster movie. Hayley has played Agent Carter in six Marvel films including Captain America and two TV series spin-offs - most notably the namesake series, Agent Carter - and most recently you will have seen her dangling from a train, or driving a Fiat 500 at breakneck speed in Rome alongside Tom Cruise in the Mission Impossible franchise.  As Hayley returns to her first love of theatre, in the Jamie Llyod's West End production of ‘Much Ado About Nothing' opposite Tom Hiddleston, she joins us to talk about how the play raises some serious questions about cancel culture and our society's gender double standards.  Hayley also talks about learning to walk into rooms as your autentic self, how she wishes she was more compassionate to her younger self and about the lack of male allies for women in Hollywood and beyond. There are a lot of Heartstopper fans who listen to this podcast so we of course chat about her incredible cameo in the Netflix show as Nick's (played by Kit Connor - if you missed his episode of the pod, scroll back and listen after this episode) aunt - which makes me cry every time - and she shares the best piece of advice for learning to manage social anxiety that she learnt from THE Tom Cruise.  This episode is packed full of advice and if you love listening to Hayley as much as I did please get in touch with me across socials @joshsmithhosts as I always love hearing from you. I am OBSESSED with the dysfunctional dynamic between Michelle's character Jaclyn and her two childhood friends Laurie (Carrie Coon) and Kate (Leslie Bibb). That is the girls trip I want to be on, even if it's just for a front row seat for the drama.  As the series continues Michelle joins us to talk about the juggle that comes from trying to be everything to everyone all at once - especially as a mother - the power of sisterhood, how female competition has changed in the entertainment industry and how good things come from a no! If you are struggling to build boundaries or want to reframe your relationship with rejection, that is a piece of advice you need to hear.  Michelle also reflects on her 25 year long career that's seen her star in Mission Impossible, True Detective and Family Plan and reveals a producer once told her she would never work again after she simply said no to doing some publicity she didn't feel comfortable doing.
