Week 40 of Ted Gioia's Immersive Humanities Course brings together three demanding—and deeply philosophical—works: Leo Tolstoy's The Death of Ivan Ilyich, Fyodor Dostoyevsky's The Grand Inquisitor, and Friedrich Nietzsche's Beyond Good and Evil. But before we get started, I offer a short primer on reading Russian lit. The names can be a real challenge!Tolstoy's novella, written after his spiritual “conversion,” is a devastating meditation on death, meaning, and self-deception—circular in structure but spiraling ever deeper. It may be the finest short work I've read so far. Dostoyevsky's famous parable interrupts the narrative of The Brothers Karamazov to pose unsettling questions about freedom, faith, and institutional power, turning conventional religious assumptions upside down. Nietzsche's Beyond Good and Evil proved the most challenging: dense, contrary, and deliberately destabilizing, it rejects inherited moral frameworks in favor of examining desire, psychology, and power. In this episode, we take an unflinching look at one of the most notorious serial killers in American history. Theodore Robert Bundy murdered at least thirty women across seven states during the 1970s, and his case forever changed how we understand the nature of predatory violence.This is the complete story of Ted Bundy, from his troubled beginnings to his final moments in Florida's electric chair. We open on a summer afternoon at Lake Sammamish State Park in Washington State, where a handsome young man with his arm in a sling approached woman after woman, asking for help with his sailboat. Two of those women would never be seen alive again, and their disappearances would mark a turning point in one of the largest manhunts in Pacific Northwest history.The story begins in 1946 at the Elizabeth Lund Home for Unwed Mothers in Burlington, Vermont, where a young woman named Louise Cowell gave birth to a son she could not publicly claim as her own. We explore the elaborate family deception that followed, with Ted being raised to believe his grandparents were his parents and his mother was merely his older sister. We examine the household dynamics in Philadelphia, including accounts of his grandfather Samuel Cowell's violent temper, and we follow the family's cross-country relocation to Tacoma, Washington, where Louise would eventually marry a hospital cook named Johnnie Bundy.From there, we trace Ted's development through childhood and adolescence. We look at his struggles to connect with peers, his early fascination with violence and true crime, his nighttime prowling through neighborhoods, and the petty thefts that taught him he could take what he wanted without consequence. We follow him to the University of Washington, where he reinvented himself as a charming political operative and met the wealthy young woman whose rejection would send him spiraling into darkness. The heart of this episode chronicles Ted Bundy's years of murder. Beginning with the attack on Karen Sparks in January 1974 and the disappearance of Lynda Ann Healy just weeks later, we document the wave of terror that swept through the Pacific Northwest as young women vanished from college campuses and public spaces. We cover each known victim, the circumstances of their disappearances, and the desperate efforts of investigators who were working without the benefit of modern forensic tools or computerized databases. We examine the critical turning point at Lake Sammamish, where multiple witnesses saw the same man approaching women and where a composite sketch finally gave investigators something to work with. We reveal how Ted Bundy's own girlfriend reported her suspicions to police and how his name was lost in a pile of thousands of tips.The narrative follows Bundy to Utah, where he enrolled in law school and immediately began hunting again. We cover the murders of Nancy Wilcox, Melissa Smith, Laura Aime, and Debra Kent. We explore how investigators across multiple states were slowly beginning to connect the dots, recognizing patterns that suggested a single killer was responsible for disappearances spanning thousands of miles. The capture of Ted Bundy receives detailed attention, beginning with the routine traffic stop by Utah Highway Patrol Sergeant Bob Hayward that revealed a car full of disturbing items. We cover Bundy's conviction for the kidnapping of Carol DaRonch and his extradition to Colorado to face murder charges.Two full chapters are devoted to Ted Bundy's escapes from custody. The first escape came when he leaped from a second-story window of the Pitkin County Courthouse in Aspen, leading authorities on a six-day manhunt through the Colorado mountains. The second escape was even more audacious, with Bundy sawing through the ceiling of his cell and walking out the front door of the Garfield County Jail on the night of December 30th, 1977. We follow Bundy to Florida, where he committed his most violent attacks. The Chi Omega sorority house massacre is covered in detail, documenting how Bundy killed two young women and severely injured three others in a span of minutes. We also cover his final victim, twelve-year-old Kimberly Leach, who was abducted from her junior high school in Lake City just weeks later.The legal proceedings receive thorough examination. We cover the groundbreaking Miami trial, one of the first to be televised nationally, where Bundy represented himself and was ultimately convicted based on eyewitness testimony and forensic bite mark evidence. We also cover the subsequent trial for the murder of Kimberly Leach and the failed insanity defense.The episode concludes with Bundy's nine years on death row, his eventual confessions to investigators, and his execution on January 24th, 1989. Questions about evil and suffering are difficult for anyone; and yet the Bible does provide answers and today we'll look at the Fall of Man in Genesis 3, but specifically God's solution to Evil. The answers may surprise us! So, please join us in this foundational passage on why there is evil and suffering and what God is doing about it.  DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1.    Draw a box around Genesis 3:15. This is one of the most important verses in the entire Bible. Why? What hope does this give to us? 2.    Using different underlining methods (for example: a single underline, double underline, or dash) underline God's judgments on Satan, Adam, and Eve. What is different about how each person will experience the curse? Why do you think men and women experience the curse differently? How do we all experience all aspects of the curse? 3.    How did Satan tempt Eve to doubt God's integrity? What is the significance of the fact that Satan used lies and deception to cause Eve to question God? How does Satan sometimes deceive people into doubting God today?  4.    Once Satan twisted Eve's understanding of God, she was more amenable to sin. In what ways does a twisted understanding of God's Word also lead to a twisted understanding of God? How might this make a person more willing to sin?  5.    What does sin look like in the Bible? What does it look like in our world today? How about in our own lives?  6.    When Adam sinned, "what" did he want to learn about? How does this same root desire still manifest itself in our lives today? 7.    In many ways, the "curse" that mankind currently experiences can be summarized as God allowing the evil that man wanted to know about to exist in our world. What promise and hope does God give regarding a Savior, in Genesis 3:15?  8.    Who is Genesis 3:15 speaking of and what will He one day do? How is getting crushed on the head far worse than being wounded on the heel? How did Jesus fulfill this promise?  9.    After the fall, Adam and Eve began to have conflict in their home. How does this passage help us understand the conflict that sometimes arises in our homes today?  10.    Did God's command to work come before or after the Fall? How does the curse impact our work experiences today? What kinds of things can a person do to minimize this impact? 11.    What do we learn from the account of God making clothes for Adam and Eve made of animal skins? What does this teach us about God's loving mercy and provision for His people? Why do we need God to "cover" our sin?  12.    According to the study, why did God send Adam and Eve from the garden? What would be so bad about living forever in a state that was eternally separated from God? What hope does this give us about our future?  13.    How does this study help us answer the question, "Why doesn't God do something about the pain and suffering in the world?" Our text today is Judges 19:30. "And all who saw it said, 'Such a thing has never happened or been seen from the day that the people of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt until this day; consider it, take counsel, and speak.'" — Judges 19:30 After the concubine's body was divided and sent throughout Israel, the nation was stunned. The people were forced to face their own moral decay—something so grotesque that it defied explanation. They cried out, "Such a thing has never happened!" And yet, it had happened—because of their silence, their compromise, and their abandonment of God. Israel had reached a point of no return. Evil was no longer outside their borders—it was within their tribes, their homes, and their hearts. And now, the nation that had ignored sin for generations was finally forced to see the cost of its complacency. We're not far from this moment today. Our culture flaunts what it once feared. We parade what God calls perverse and applaud what He condemns. The Church, too, has grown numb—more comfortable debating truth than defending it. Like Israel, we've seen so much sin that we barely flinch anymore. But evil always demands a response. It won't wait. It won't relent. And if we don't confront it, it will consume us. The people of Israel were called to "consider, take counsel, and speak." That's not just good advice—it's a call to repentance and reform. To look honestly at the ruin, seek God's wisdom, and speak the truth boldly once more. This is what revival looks like—it begins with seeing evil for what it is, grieving over it, and then turning to God for healing. We don't need louder outrage—we need deeper repentance. It's time for believers and the Church collective to rise again—to speak truth into a world collapsing under the weight of lies, to lead with courage when others retreat, and to call a generation back to holiness. Evil has spoken loudly. Now, it's time for the righteous to answer. ASK THIS: Where have you grown numb to evil in your life or culture? What truth has God been asking you to speak that you've delayed? DO THIS: Speak truth in love this week where culture has grown comfortable with sin. Lead your family, church, or circle in prayer for revival and holiness. PRAY THIS: Lord, let me never grow numb to evil. Give me courage to speak, wisdom to act, and humility to repent.
