If you follow politics at all, your head must be on a swivel (and hurting) with all of the upheaval going in America and abroad. In many cases, promises were made but not kept which may be making you rethink some of your recent choices at the ballot box and even squirm a bit.Comedian JP Sears dissects these recent events and, like the deft, wise humorist he is, reminds us that giving our power as citizens way too easily on promises not delivered makes us the punchline of the joke, a lesson all of us can learn from as we create a better destiny for ourselves and the world this week on Spirit Gym.Learn more about JP and his work on his website. Why does God allow evil to exist in the world? Is He using it in order to accomplish His will? If so how?
Greg talks about Jesus' reference to “the least of these” in Matthew 25, then he answers questions about whether all things are good or evil, implications of saying one shouldn't do anything one thinks is wrong, and how we can make moral judgments about suffering if it's all working for good. Topics: Commentary: Who are the “least of these”? (00:00) Are all things good or evil? (35:00) If someone truly believes many good things are wrong, how would you counsel them to move forward in life? (42:00) If we say God has a reason to allow gratuitous (i.e., meaningless) suffering, then aren't we saying he's unable or uninterested in bringing about his good ends without the use of suffering, and how do we make moral distinctions about suffering if it's all doing good? The Horror Short Film Director Roundtable is one of the most important things that we did at the Portland Horror Film Festival. It provided an elevated platform for horror short filmmakers. Oftentimes, this is ground zero for original horror ideas. Unless you are a Hollywood nepo-director, short film creation is where you learn your chops. I wanted to give these creatives an opportunity to share their experiences in making movies, both good and bad, so that we can all learn a little more about the craft. Life as a short filmmaker can be an experience in the shadows. Your films are rarely seen outside of film festivals, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. This is where most creative minds hone their crafts. Take a simple concept and do it well. Do you have something scary or funny to tell? Is there an idea that has been lurking in the back of your brain that you have to give life to? A short film will give you the opportunity to learn production, editing, budgeting, and team management. It also places you in a community of people who are open to sharing their work with one another. That’s where the round table fits in. After our discussion, I told the group that, even though I wanted this discussion to be a forum for them to share their wins and losses with each other, I selfishly set up this talk so I could learn more about horror moviemaking. Nine years in on being a small horror press journalist, and I still feel like I am only scratching the surface about what a director has to do. Just how do you do it? These discussions give me more talking points and access to better questions to ask. The Portland Horror Film Festival is one of the best curated horror film festivals in the country. Not only do Gwen and Brian Callahan select some of the best horror short films for their festivals, but they also provide opportunities for short film alumni to showcase their feature films. One of the questions I asked in our roundtable discussion was, “How many of you are looking to be feature film directors?” All of them raised their hands (with the exception of Patrick Hogan, who has already directed a feature film). For these directors, here is some encouraging data. This year alone had FIVE directors who previously presented short films at either PHFF or the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival and later had their feature films shown at these festivals. Here are the PHFF Alumni filmmakers who presented a short film and then a feature: Anthony Cousins: Short Films – “The Bloody Ballad of Squirt Reynolds” and “Every Time We Meet for Ice Cream Your Whole Fucking Face Explodes” to Feature Films – Frogman (2023) and Frogman Returns (2026) Jeff Ferrell: Short Film – “Morella” to Feature Film – The Demonatrix (2026) Levi Buchannan: Short Film – “We Said Forever” to Feature Film Sitra Achra (2026) Krsy Fox: Short Film – “What the Spell” to Feature Film – Big Baby (2026) Masaki Nishiyama: Short Film “Smahorror” to Feature Film “The Invisible Half” (2026) Zack Ogle: Short Film “We Got a Monkey’s Paw” to Feature Film – It Needs Eyes (2025) Craig Ouellette: “Str$p” to Feature Film – Straight on Til Morning (2025) Andrew Bowser: Short Film – “Little Willy” to Feature Film – Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Evil (2022) Izzy Lee: “My Monster”, “Dark Signals”, “Rehomed” to Feature Film – House of Ashes (2024) Kenichi Ugana: Short Film – “Visitors” to Feature Film – Love Will Tear Us Apart (2023) Alice Maio Mackay: Short Film – “The Serpent’s Skin” to Feature Film T-Blockers (2023) Matthew John Lawrence: Short Film “Larry Gone Demon” to Feature Film – Uncle Peckerhead (2020) Justin Harding: Short Film “Kookie” to Feature Film – Making Monsters (2019) The PHFF Horror Short Film Director Roundtable Recording: Here is the roundtable discussion. It’s all about the lessons learned. The good, the bad, and the ridiculous. My past experience doing these round tables sometimes put the filmmakers on the spot, and I didn’t want this to be a “stump the directors” exercise. I prepared them with the following questions: Apart from financing, what was the biggest challenge in making your movie? What was the most interesting thing you learned while making this film? How many of you are filmmakers as a second career? What remains a mystery to you as a filmmaker that you think might be answered by one of your peers in this discussion? What piece of advice do you have for your fellow directors? This group really got into the discussion, and had the festival not started up, we could have gone on for quite a while longer. I had a great time, and I believe they did as well. The Horror Short Film Director Roundtable Films: Blindsided Directed by P. Patrick HoganStarring Crystal LoverroPortland Horror Film Festival: Winner of the Devil’s Discord (Best Sound Design) A blind schoolteacher struggles to survive through a nightmarish night when an alien spaceship crashes and unleashes a monstrous predator. This unique horror short film features an all-low-vision cast and places the audience in the POV of a blind protagonist who is only able to hear what happens around her. Director Statements: “Blindsided is a riveting short horror film that takes a unique narrative approach, providing audiences with an immersive glimpse into the harrowing experience of Maria, a blind woman confronting the most terrifying ordeal of her life. The horror remains unseen, both to her and the audience, heightening the suspense and reminding us that sometimes, the most terrifying things are the ones we don’t see coming… This is an innovative short film that ventures into uncharted territory within the horror genre. The narrative unfolds in a tranquil neighborhood, abruptly disrupted by a crashing alien spacecraft and the horrifying monster it unleashes into the night. However, what sets this film apart is the unique perspective from which the story is told – the POV of Maria, a blind schoolteacher living alone. Maria’s desperate struggle to evade the otherworldly predator, guided solely by what she hears, will provide an experience unlike any other horror short. Additionally, to promote diversity and inclusivity, in conjunction with our Disability Authenticity Consultant Vanni Le and Casting Director Danielle Pretsfelder Demchick, all the characters in the film are played by low-vision actors, placing the spotlight on the often-overlooked talent within the low-vision community. We are very proud of Blindsided and look forward to enjoying it in theaters with an audience who doesn’t know what they are about to experience.” Scullion Written and Directed by Trevor GracianoStarring: Whitney Garner as “Samantha”, Cody Parr as “Greg”, and Jim Close as “The Maid” A playful couple test their household chore habits and unknowingly summon a vengeful presence. Director Statements: “We all carry habits inherited from our parents into adulthood. I grew up in a religious household where some of those habits were helpful, but many were not—and they've lingered in ways I don't welcome. Some habits fade with time, while others remain, quietly shaping us in the background. This film explores the struggle to break free from those ingrained patterns, and the imaginative consequences of what happens when they refuse to let go. *It's really just about how to load the communal dishwasher correctly.” Worst Thing You’ve Ever Done Directed by PJ GermainWritten by Autumn Palen and PJ GermainStarring: Brady Gentry, Benjamin Nowak, Bix Krieger, Charlie N. Townsend, Cailyn Rice, Ethan Ahn, Emma Smith Watts, and Erin Rae Kykendall HIGH SCHOOL REALLY SUCKS… and no one knows that better than best friends Aaron and Keith. So when they set out to crash the last graduation party of the summer, emotions fly high, and the culture clash of teenagers finds them playing a simple game that has dire consequences. Director’s Statement: “Before he passed, screenwriter Gil Dennis told me during my time at AFI, “Write what hurts.” That idea has stayed with me; it's the compass I use when choosing the stories I want to tell. When I first read Autumn Palen's original draft of Worst Thing You've Ever Done, it hurt. It transported me back to moments in my own adolescence; memories filled with shame, ridicule, and isolation. But what floored me was its third-act twist. It was something I'd never felt so viscerally in a short script. I knew I had to direct it. What began as a contained character piece evolved into something more personal. I rewrote the script to reflect my own lived experiences, with every character, every event drawn from real moments that left a mark. I wanted to take a character that I felt so intertwined with, and make him someone that the audience would really relate to before reaching the moment where everything changes; the blood-drenched punchline to the twisted joke these high school kids played on each other. I set it during the 90’s, as it was a period of transition for me as an 80’s kid, being on the cusp of the old and new world. I needed the film to be an exploration of adolescent loneliness which dealt with the complexity of the friendships and social hierarchies that often defined who we were at that fragile age. We weren’t quite kids anymore, but we weren’t adults yet either, so how did we approach the consequences of reckless behavior? My team and I knew that casting would make or break the film. To capture that truth, casting was everything. I reviewed over 6,000 submissions, narrowing it down to a callback of who I thought could embody the characters. I needed authenticity, so at that callback, I ditched the script and asked actors, in character, to describe moments like first dates or getting asked to prom. It revealed who leaped from the page and became real. A week before we were to start shooting, my original cinematographer had to back out due to a conflict with the TV series he was currently shooting, and months of planning began to crumble. In the days leading up to whether or not we were going to cancel the project entirely, my long-time collaborator and cinematographer Jeff Billings took on the task. We shot the film over 3 tireless days, and as any director knows, you plan as much as you can; however, the plan eventually goes out the window. So I played a game of pivoting and being malleable myself in order to get what we needed to tell the story. The film is a testament to all the parts working together for a singular goal, and my hope is that when that first music cue drops, the audience is strapped in and ready to ride the roller coaster to that final frame.” https://vimeo.com/1071562836/377ba7d361?fl=pl&fe=cm Cat and Mouse Written and Directed by Brady CatesStarring: Halima Kamara as “Michelle”, Collan Simmons as “Felix, and Ron LaprechtEdited by Luke Oleen Junk, and Hayley Frederick Michelle is caught in a killer’s sadistic and carefully orchestrated game. With danger closing in at every turn, Michelle must outwit and outlast her relentless pursuer. But as the night goes on, unsettling clues reveal that all may not be what it seems. This time, it's the mouse's turn to catch the cat. My Severed Arm Written and Directed by Casey de FremeryStarring: Olivia Rose Prince as “Sidney”, Ryan Romine as “Mason”, and Julia Linger as “Commercial Model”Portland Horror Film Festival: Funny Bone Award for Exceptional Horror Comedy A woman tries to escape a serial killer using DIY videos, but the internet won't stop trying to sell her things first. Director’s Statement: “My Severed Arm is a horror-comedy about a “final girl” who, after fleeing into a cabin in the woods, discovers that her greatest threat isn't the machete-wielding slasher outside—it's the barrage of unskippable ads and paywalls blocking her access to life-saving information. Trapped, bleeding, and desperate to repair the tools around her, she turns to YouTube—but instead of help, she's ambushed by holographic tutorials and polished commercial spokespeople invading the cabin like digital ghosts. The film began with a thought I couldn't shake: what if you had to listen to ads when calling 911? It was a joke at first, but one that felt eerily plausible five minutes into the future. I've learned so many practical things through platforms like YouTube, but over time, that access has been buried beneath monetization schemes, misinformation, and endless self-promotional detours. This story is my response to that frustration—exaggerated into a literal life-or-death scenario. Stylistically, I wanted to evoke the stark, grim energy of Evil Dead or Cabin in the Woods, but undercut it with the absurdity of consumer culture leaking into every moment. That blend of horror and comedy, physical space and digital intrusion, is what drives the tone. At its core, My Severed Arm is about survival—both in the horror-movie and digital sense. It's about what happens when urgency meets algorithm, when access to knowledge is shaped by incentive structures that don't care if you bleed out. The film asks: what good is information if it's hidden behind paywalls, pop-ups, and promo codes? But more than anything, I want the audience to laugh, cringe, and feel that creeping recognition that this isn't the future – it's the now.” Into The Stand Directed by Mackenzie Hamilton and Taylor FuchsWritten by Mackenzie HamiltonStarring: Sarah Rich as “Quinn”, Ariana Raygoza as “Rosa”, and Nick Dietrich Tree planters Quinn and Rosa return to camp for another summer in the wilderness. Rosa is newly sober, and Quinn is quietly anxious about how she'll handle the camp's hard-partying culture. At the welcome-back party, Rosa is tempted to drink, prompting Quinn to intervene. Shaken, Rosa heads into the forest to clear her head, but doesn't come back. When Quinn goes after her, she's met with eerie signs: strange noises, a mangled deer, and an odd light deep in the woods. As the forest closes in, Quinn questions if there is something else out there. Director’s Statement: The woods have always haunted me. Growing up in rural Vancouver Island, I would often cut through forest trails to reach friends’ houses. When it was night, we would meet in the middle of the trail to keep each other safe. Thankfully, we always found each other, but I frequently wondered what if we didn't? What if something else was out there, waiting in the darkness of the woods? Into the Stand is inspired by the many times I scared myself on those trails, letting my imagination run wild. Now that I'm older, my fears are centered around more tangible things, like navigating how to let go of people you love when you can't control what they're going through. This story is deeply informed by themes of sobriety, codependency, and how the urge to help someone can sometimes lead you somewhere dark. Ultimately, Into the Stand is a fun horror made in the community I grew up in with friends who helped bring it to life. My husband and I co-directed this short film, transforming the woods on my parents' farm into a tree-planting camp, and had a blast turning a familiar place into something eerie and cinematic. It's a scary film that is personal and full of heart, and I'm overjoyed to be telling stories in the places that shaped me. –Mackenzie Hamilton and Taylor Fuchs Nurture Written and Directed by Nick SnyderProduced by Sam SnyderStarring: Travis Bilenski as “Ren, and Kailey Rhodes as “Rose”Portland Horror Film Festival: Winner – Goule D’or Best Short On a remote Oregon farm, a couple grieving from a miscarriage finds hope in a mysterious flower. But as it heals her, the flower takes root in him. Nurture is a dialogue-free folk-horror fable about love, grief, and the consequences of taking too much from nature. Director’s Statement: NURTURE marks my return to narrative filmmaking after years of honing my craft in visual effects, motion design, and commercial work. Inspired by the Pacific Northwest and the quiet mythology of its forests, this dialogue-free folk horror short explores grief through the lens of a nature curse. Where grief deepens love and a curse demands sacrifice, NURTURE examines the dangerous hope that something broken can be restored without cost. Other Notable Horror Shorts from the Festival: There were 48 short films shown at the Festival, selected from over 500 submissions. Here are a few notable and favorite films that were also showing at the festival. Famous Directed by Rosita Lama MuvdiWritten by Jordan MonaghanStarring Jordan Monaghan “A young woman desperate for social media fame exploits her father's death to go viral. But the volatile world of internet stardom pushes her to the edge.” Punchy and poignant. Famous taps into the darkest desires of influencers desperate to get likes. Just how far will you go for a few more “likes and subscribes”? Jordan Monaghan chases likes the wrong way in “Famous” (2026) Favela Amarela (Brazil) Written and Directed by Nicolas Lobato and Tiago TuchuStarring Richard Abelha, Giselle Batista, and Sai “A student from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro joins the local drug militia to pay for college and uncovers an NGO linked to powerful politicians that hides dark rituals devoted to the King in Yellow.” I won’t be surprised if this stunning short film also plays at the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival. It is saturated in Brazilian culture, mixed with a heavy application of Cosmic Horror. Favela Amarela (2026) Wall Udder Written and Directed by Alexandra HaydenStarring Kevin Grady, Sawyer Fuller, and Bries Vannon “A dissatisfied woman confronts repressed feelings of malaise after her partner comes home smelling like milk.” Hysterically gag-inducingly funny! There is a double-punchline gag that brought the house down. Part of the Shorts Gone Wild block at PHFF, where the festival screens the zaniest submitted shorts. This did not disappoint. Ewwww! Who wants some milk? “Wall Udder” (2026) Tooth-Hurty! Directed by Jude MadonnaWritten by Katie SmallStarring Katie Small, Jude Madonna, Brook Hogan, and Tommy HardenPortland Horror Film Festival Winner: Abby Normal Award: For the exceptionally weird and disturbing “Lucy is a people-pleasing writer-photographer whose dream of being an artist remains just out of reach. A comment from her boyfriend about her teeth triggers Lucy to make an appointment for a dental checkup for the first time in years with the mysterious yet heavily advertised Big Smiles Dentistry.” Super clever! There should be more horror movies about trips to the dentist. This made my toes curl and had me in stitches, as well. Say Ahhh! Katie Small in “Tooth-Hurty!” (2026) CHÄIR Directed by Chris McInroyWritten by Chris McInroy and Carlos La RottaStarring Carlos LaRotta, Kim Lowery, and Chloe McInroy “Carl just wanted to sit down. The chair had other plans.” I am always a fan of Chris McInroy. He and Carlos do a crazy short film every year. I am in awe of how these guys make deadpan, silly, and super-gory original content. It won’t be long before they release a greatest-hits compilation, and I will be in line to buy it. This spoof on Ikea furniture assembly is a tribute to all of us who have struggled to assemble the Scandinavian furniture at home. Carlos LaRotta contemplates his struggles putting a chair together in “CHÄIR” (2026) The Bones Exist Directed by Kelsey Bollig and Matthew DuVallWritten by Matthew DuVallStarring: Alex Pena as “Manny”, Siya Maleki as “Diego”, Jack Campbell as “Don Rob”, Michael Manzako as “The Boy”, and Alex Bankler as the Utah Raptor.Portland Horror Film Festival Winner: Tompe L’oiel Award for Best Special Effects In the unforgiving wilderness of 1850s Alta California, a dwindling group of gold prospectors encounters a feral boy who forces the men to confront the horrors lurking in the woods and the sins of their past. This combines two of my favorite genres: Dinosaurs and Westerns. Perhaps not done since The Valley of Gwanji, The Bones Exists shows plenty of raptors hunting cowboys and does so convincingly. Bonus points for showing the most current understanding of raptors as feathered dinos. Munch Munch! “The Bones Exist” (2026) Flush (France) Written and Directed by Raphaël TreinerStarring Eléonore Gurrey as “Marianne” and Christophe Ntakabenura as “Ben” Abominable plumbing and violent deaths. MARIANNE, extremely pregnant, and BEN, a plumber and one-night stand, team up to survive an epic night and face the monsters of a building beset by an unknown evil. I am a sucker for the Trapped in a Bathroom trope, even going so far as to host a Crypticon horror panel on the topic. This film goes to the top (plumbing) shelf. This is Cosmic horror that brings all the icky, goopy, nasty elements you might expect from this theme is on full display. To think that an effective little romance element managed to sneak into the plot, and you have something unusually effective. I love it when the French go weird. Eléonore Gurrey and Christophe Ntakabenura are unlikely allies in “Flush” (2026)
Between 1962 and 1964, thirteen women in the Boston area were murdered in a case that terrified a city and became known around the world as the Boston Strangler murders. For decades, the public was told Albert DeSalvo was the killer. He confessed, the headlines moved on, and Boston tried to put the nightmare behind it. But DeSalvo was never convicted of the Strangler murders. His confession had problems, several suspects remained in the background, and even after DNA tied him to one victim in 2013, questions remain about whether one man killed all thirteen women. In this episode we look at the victims, the investigation, the suspects, the confession, and the evidence that still leaves this case sitting somewhere between closure and mystery.#BostonStrangler #AlbertDeSalvo #AnnaSlesers #MaryMullen #NinaNichols #HelenBlake #IdaIrga #JaneSullivan #SophieClark #PatriciaBissette #MaryAnnBrown #BeverlySamans #EvelynCorbin #JoannGraff #MarySullivan #GeorgeNassar #TrueCrime #ColdCase #CriminalBehavior #ProfilingEvil #GIS #Esri #ArcGIS========================================20% OFF Newspapers.comhttps://www.newspapers.com/go/podcast/?ref=profilingevil?xid=8877&utm_source=ProfilingEvilPodcast&utm_medium=podcst&utm_campaign=ProfilingEvil26========================================Discounts on eBikes: https://aipasbike.com/?ref=PROFILINGEVILReferral Coupon Code: PROFILINGEVIL========================================Email your questions to: ProfilingEvil@gmail.com========================================

In Revelation 17, John has already watched dragons, beasts, and armies without flinching and then one thing finally stops him in his tracks. Not something terrifying. Something beautiful. A woman called Babylon, dressed in gold, holding a cup that looks like everything you've ever wanted. That's the warning: the most dangerous things in our lives rarely look dangerous. They look like the good life.In this sixth week of our Revelation series, we walk through Revelation 17–18 andask what Babylon, "the great prostitute," actually represents — and why John keeps insisting she's not just an end-times symbol for some distant empire, but apresent-tense pull on every one of us. Babylon is what the world becomes, and what our own lives become, when we quietly slide ourselves into the center where God belongs. She promises that a little more — more success, more approval, more security will finally hold your life together. Instead, like a wheel spinningwithout a hub, it slowly shreds. That's why, right in the middle of her downfall,a voice from heaven says something tender: "Come out of her, my people." Not anaccusation. An invitation. The real question this passage leaves us with is aquiet one worth sitting with: what's actually at the center of your life right now?Support the show
Understanding the Imprecatory PsalmsAppoint someone evil to oppose my enemy. Let an accuser stand at his right hand. When he is tried, let him be found guilty...May his days be few... May his children be wandering beggars... - Psalm 109Those words are in the Bible. For many Christians, reading Psalm 109 for the first time is shocking. It sounds more like a cry of vengeance than a prayer of faith. How can these words exist alongside Jesus' command to "love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you" (Matthew 5:44)?These prayers have a name: imprecatory prayers.Imprecatory prayers are prayers that call upon God to judge evil, stop the wicked, and bring justice. They are not rare exceptions hidden in obscure parts of Scripture. The Psalms contain many of them, including Psalms 5, 10, 17, 35, 58, 69, 70, 79, 83, and 109.But what are we supposed to do with them? Here are a few things to consider. They Are Inspired ScriptureOne temptation is to dismiss these psalms as emotional outbursts. Perhaps David lost his temper. Maybe the psalmists were simply expressing raw human emotion. But Scripture itself will not allow us to take that approach. The Psalms are inspired by God and accepted as such by both Jews and Christians. Even more significantly, Jesus treated them as authoritative Scripture. The New Testament quotes from imprecatory psalms without apology or correction. Jesus referenced them, and both Peter and Paul drew from them in their teaching. What About "Love Your Enemies"?The greatest tension comes when we compare these psalms with Jesus' teaching in the Sermon on the Mount.Jesus said:Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. - Matthew 5:44How do we reconcile that command with prayers asking God to bring judgment?Context matters. The imprecatory psalms are often written from a kingdom context. David was not merely a private individual nursing personal grudges. He was God's appointed king, responsible for protecting a nation from those who sought its destruction. Jesus, however, was addressing personal relationships. He taught His followers how to respond when insulted, mistreated, or persecuted in everyday life. Turning the other cheek addresses personal retaliation, pride, and revenge. It does not erase the reality that evil exists and sometimes threatens innocent lives. The two teachings are simply addressing different situations. These Prayers Are Not About Personal RevengeThe imprecatory psalms should never become weapons for settling personal scores. They are not prayers against the coworker who gossiped about you nor tools for getting even with someone who hurt your feelings.God says:It is mine to avenge; I will repay. - Deuteronomy 32:35Personal vengeance belongs to God. Imprecatory prayers are not invitations to hatred. They are acts of surrender that place justice in God's hands rather than our own.A Cry for Evil to Be StoppedAt their heart, these prayers express a longing for evil to end. They arise in moments when wickedness seems unchecked, when innocent people suffer, and when injustice appears to triumph. For believers living in times of war, this reality becomes painfully clear. When missiles fall and innocent lives are threatened, the immediate prayer is often not, "Lord, help me feel more forgiving." Instead, it is, "Lord, stop this evil. Protect the innocent. Do whatever is necessary to bring this violence to an end." Imprecatory prayers remind us that longing for justice is not unspiritual. It reflects God's own hatred of evil.God's Glory Is the GoalThese psalms are ultimately God-centered.Psalm 79:9 says:Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of your name; deliver us and atone for our sins, for your name's sake. The deepest concern of these prayers is not personal comfort but God's honor. They ask: Will evil have the final word? Will the wicked appear victorious forever? Or will the world see that God is righteous, just, and worthy of glory? The imprecatory psalms cry out for God to vindicate His name. What Can We Learn? The imprecatory psalms teach us that:Evil is real and should never be minimized.Justice matters because God is just.Personal revenge belongs to God alone. There are times when it is right to ask God to stop evil.God's glory, not our bitterness, must remain at the center of our prayers. Most of us will not pray prayers like Psalm 109 every day.But perhaps our discomfort with these passages reveals something important. We often prefer a version of God that is loving but not judging, merciful but not holy. Yet the Bible presents a God who is both. He is patient and compassionate, but He also hates evil and promises that injustice will not endure forever.

Daily Dose of Hope June 22, 2026 Scripture: 1 Kings 16 Prayer: Almighty God, We come before you with awe and humility. We are nothing without you. We need you desperately, Lord. Help us gather our scattered thoughts today as we focus on you. In these next few moments of silence, help us remember that we belong to you. Help us lay our worries and cares on the throne of your grace...We pray this in the powerful name of Jesus, Amen. Welcome back to the Daily Dose of Hope, the devotional and podcast that complements the New Hope daily Bible reading plan. We are currently working our way through 1 Kings. It's been quite a ride so far! Let's see what we have in store today. Our reading on this Monday is 1 Kings 16. The Northern Kingdom is one, hot sinful mess! King after king, there is disobedience, idolatry, and violence. By the time we get to King Ahab at the end of chapter 16, we think it can't get any worse. And yet, it really does. Ahab was the worst of the worst. He went above and beyond when it came to deliberately thumbing his nose at God and he took pagan worship to a new level. Then, there was child sacrifice. To be honest, I wasn't really clear about what verse 34 meant–what does it mean to build the foundations of a city or the gates at the cost of a child? Apparently, infants (alive or dead) would be placed in a container and then literally placed in the masonry of the foundation. The idea was to ward off evil and please the gods. I have a hard time even typing the words. How absolutely horrific and blatantly against the law of the one true God. One more aspect of Ahab's total disregard for the Lord–the rebuilding of Jericho. Most of you probably remember the great story of Joshua and the people of God conquering Jericho after circling for seven days. At the time, God warned of death to the person (and their family) who attempted to rebuild the city. And Ahab rebuilt it. The author is reminding us that while it might not appear to be so, God's Word still stands. God is still in control. Ahab will not have the final word. Evil does not win. And evil does not win today. It's a good reminder for all of us because there are times when the depravity around the globe can be almost overwhelming. God will have the final word. Of course, we live on the other side of the cross. We know that Jesus has won victory over sin and death. However, we do live in an in-between time. Maybe a better way to say it is that the war has been won but there are still some battles remaining. Until Jesus returns in final victory, evil will still have a place in this world. When he returns, we can look forward to a time when evil will be vanquished for good. No more tears, no more violence, no more injustice. Blessings, Pastor Vicki

Send us Fan MailAs we dive further into Psalm 37, we see that God has much to say about the righteous man. Despite what this life brings, a righteous man's needs are met; his household is taken care of and provided for. He is also generous and giving and this is in stark contrast to evildoers and the wicked. Finally, the steps of a righteous man are upheld by the Lord. God is not going to allow him to stumble or stay down because He watches out for him. A righteous man serves and obeys his God. Therefore, God protects him and keeps his life. Psalm 37 has many promises and this episode outlines several of them. We can take heart. God is with us.
Send us a messageAny religion outside of true Christianity falls into the category of a mystery religion, as ultimately, they all lead people to damnation. Mystery Babylon is a stridency of confusion, offering many false paths to salvation. Some of the Epistles were written to counter false teachings of the Gnostics (1 John 4:2), and the Nicolaitans (Rev. 2:15), that had already begun to creep into the early church. Jesus also warned of these apostates in Matthew 7:15-16: “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits.” A wolf is merciless, devouring its prey with no hesitation. Being wrapped in sheep's clothing makes these false teachers all the more dangerous. Only by knowing the doctrines of the Bible can we seek to avoid deception in these last days, and remain steadfast in readiness – for Jesus comes quickly!(Carl Joseph: “What Is Mystery Babylon?”)Support the showVisit our website: https://agapelightministries.com/

Rex Heuermann has now been sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison for the Gilgo Beach serial killings. After pleading guilty to seven murders and admitting responsibility for an eighth, the former Long Island architect stood in court as victims' families finally had the chance to speak directly about the pain, the waiting, and the years stolen from them. In this episode we'll look at Heuermann's sentencing from a victimology and criminal behavior perspective. This is not about giving the killer more attention. It's about remembering Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Amber Lynn Costello, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Jessica Taylor, Sandra Costilla, Valerie Mack, and Karen Vergata. It's also about Shannan Gilbert, whose disappearance helped expose what had been hidden along Ocean Parkway, and Asian Doe, who still deserves a name. We'll talk about the judge's words, Heuermann's brief statement, the importance of victim impact statements, and why the District Attorney's office must continue looking at other possible victim cases. Not because Heuermann needs more prison time. He's already going away forever. But because victims and families deserve the truth, even when the investigation is expensive, difficult, and unlikely to change the sentence.#RexHeuermann #GilgoBeach #LongIslandSerialKiller #MelissaBarthelemy #MeganWaterman #AmberLynnCostello #MaureenBrainardBarnes #JessicaTaylor #SandraCostilla #ValerieMack #KarenVergata #ShannanGilbert #AsianDoe #GilgoFour #TrueCrime #TrueCrimeCommunity #ProfilingEvil #MikeKing #Victimology #CriminalBehavior #SerialKiller #BehavioralAnalysis #FBI #ColdCase #MissingPersons #UnidentifiedVictims #JusticeForVictims #CrimeScene #LongIslandCrime #PersonalSafety #GIS #Esri #ArcGIS========================================Get Aipas eBike at a discount: https://aipasbike.com/?ref=PROFILINGEVIL========================================20% OFF Newspapers.comhttps://www.newspapers.com/go/podcast/?ref=profilingevil?xid=8877&utm_source=ProfilingEvilPodcast&utm_medium=podcst&utm_campaign=ProfilingEvil26========================================Discounts on eBikes: https://aipasbike.com/?ref=PROFILINGEVILReferral Coupon Code: PROFILINGEVIL========================================Email your questions to: ProfilingEvil@gmail.com========================================
Pastoral Reflections Finding God In Ourselves by Msgr. Don Fischer
Original Post Date: June 22, 2024 === Gospel Matthew 6:24-34 Jesus said to his disciples: "No one can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds in the sky; they do not sow or reap, they gather nothing into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are not you more important than they? Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your life-span? Why are you anxious about clothes? Learn from the way the wild flowers grow. They do not work or spin. But I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was clothed like one of them. If God so clothes the grass of the field, which grows today and is thrown into the oven tomorrow, will he not much more provide for you, O you of little faith? So do not worry and say, 'What are we to eat?' or 'What are we to drink?' or 'What are we to wear?' All these things the pagans seek. Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides. Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. Sufficient for a day is its own evil.” Reflection It's interesting how many people base their relationship on God by how quickly and how effectively he answers their prayers. Jesus says, pray and I will give you whatever you ask. But you know and I know that what that means is that we have in God the one who will be there for us always. He will always be what we need, but not necessarily what we think we need or what we want. So along with this beautiful promise of abundance in our life, there is still things that we would call not what we want. Evil things. Things that break down. Things that don't work. And you can't live in the kingdom without accepting both the fullness of that kingdom and the times when we feel that it's empty and not enough. Closing Prayer Father, we ask for wisdom. We don't always know what to pray for, what to ask for, how to deal with the things going on in our life. But if we are filled with you, your Spirit living in us is the spirit of wisdom, and it's there to enable us to give in to everything that you ask of us, and to rejoice in what is good and what is not. And we ask this in Jesus' name, Amen. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Notes from the Field | Transmission #12Hero! Today I learned that laughter might just be the best superpower. This week, in Whitewater, Colorado, a horribly murdered man sparks an investigation that shows that someone may have been after him for a while, even trying to blow up his car, weeks before his death. But a threatening note to his widow, claiming "you're next" blows the case wide open, leading to a treasure trove of evidence. The suspect turns out to be the last person that the dead man would've expected, and it also turns out that this murderer has no depths to which they will not sink!! Along the way, we find out that there are an awful lot of ghost stories in the mountains, that when someone tries to blow you up, you should maybe be pretty curious to find out who did it, and that cutting a barcode off of a card doesn't mean it's not traceable!! On the surface, Gerard Baden-Clay and his wife Allison had it all. A successful luxury property business, a beautiful young family, and a prestigious family lineage tracing back to the founder of the Boy Scouts. However, in reality, Gerard had woven a web of lies, affairs, and massive loans, all without his family even knowing. However, when it all started crashing down around him, Gerard decided the easiest way out was to kill his own wife. What followed were only more pathetic lies, appeals, attempts to hide the answer to this question: what happened to Allison Baden-Clay.StitchFix: Take the stress out of shopping with https://stitchfix.com/milehigher for $20 OFF your first order!Mintmobile: Stop overpaying for your wireless bill, go to https://mintmobile.com/MILEHIGHER and start shopping for lower rates today!HungryRoot: A Free item AND 40% OFF?! Preview for Later Today: Bruce Nichols discusses Nathaniel Hawthorne's time in Concord among the transcendentalists. Unlike the wild optimist Ralph Waldo Emerson, Hawthorne's fiction explored human tragedy and the "evil lurking in the hearts of men." This ideological friction informed his work, particularly The Scarlet Letter, where he focused deeply on Hester Prynne's perspective.
Welcome to Day 2886 of Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom – Theology Thursday – The Problem of Evil: Free Will, Imagership, and The Divine Design Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2886 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2886 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Our current series of Theology Thursday lessons is written by theologian and teacher John Daniels. I have found that his lessons are short, easy to understand, doctrinally sound, and applicable to all who desire to learn more of God's Word. John's lessons can be found on his website theologyinfive.com. Today's lesson is titled: THE PROBLEM OF EVIL: FREE WILL, IMAGERSHIP, AND THE DIVINE DESIGN. Though humanity is gifted with free will, we are not omniscient. This limitation creates a fragile balance. We are moral agents with the ability to act, but we often do so without full knowledge of the consequences. This gap between intention and outcome is fertile ground for evil to grow. Some evil is the result of direct rebellion, but much of it emerges from ignorance, misjudgment, or unintended consequences. Yahweh alone possesses omniscience. If humans knew all outcomes in advance, their choices would not reflect genuine trust or faith. The decision to follow Yahweh, even with limited knowledge, is a demonstration of allegiance, one that mirrors the loyalty He desires from His divine family as well. The first segment is: THE DIVINE REBELLION: WHEN SPIRITUAL IMAGERS TURNED. The problem of evil is not limited to humanity. Scripture reveals that spiritual beings, members of Yahweh's heavenly host, also rebelled. These divine imagers, given authority over the nations (Deuteronomy 32 verses eight and nine and Psalm 82), turned from their mandate and led humanity into darkness. Some, like the sons of God in Genesis 6, crossed boundaries and corrupted creation itself. Others accepted worship and manipulated entire cultures into idolatry, violence, and occult practices. These rebellious elohim introduced a different kind of evil, ideological and systemic. They corrupted truth, promoted false gods, and weaponized spiritual influence. Humanity's rebellion was inflamed by their lies. The result was a world fragmented, oppressed, and bound to powers that were never meant to rule. To restrain the damage these beings caused, Yahweh gave Israel the Torah. The Law was not just a set of moral rules. It was a divine firewall. Its rituals, boundaries, and covenant structure created space for holiness and identity amid spiritual chaos. Among the most profound of these rituals was the Day of Atonement, where two goats were chosen: one sacrificed to cleanse the people, and the other sent into the wilderness, symbolically carrying the sins of the nation back to Azazel, a name associated with the wilderness-dwelling rebels. This was not superstition. It was spiritual warfare through sacred practice. The Law showed that Yahweh was not passive in the face of evil. He acted decisively to reclaim His people and mitigate the influence of the divine traitors until the fullness of His plan could be revealed in the Messiah. The second segment is: WHY YAHWEH ALLOWED THIS SYSTEM. The presence of evil in creation is not a sign that Yahweh lost control. Rather, it underscores how seriously He takes relationships. He is not interested in programmed obedience. He desires a family, both human and divine, who freely love Him. The alternative would be a world without evil but also without relationship, without love, without the ability to choose the good. The biblical story is filled with the tension between human freedom and divine sovereignty. This tension is not a flaw. It is the setting in which loyalty, repentance, and transformation become meaningful. Yahweh has allowed evil for a time, knowing that through it, those who choose Him do so authentically. The third segment is: EVIL, SOVEREIGNTY, AND THE HIGH STAKES OF AGENCY. Evil exists not because God is weak, but because He values freedom. His sovereignty is not undermined by our agency. It is demonstrated by His willingness to allow it and still accomplish His purposes. From Eden to the Cross to the final judgment, Scripture presents a God who allows rebellion, intervenes to redeem, and ultimately restores. The reality of evil magnifies the seriousness of the decisions we make. We are not passive recipients of fate but active participants in a divine drama. Every moral decision reflects our allegiance. We were created to image Yahweh in how we steward creation, treat others, and respond to evil with courage, righteousness, and hope. In CONCLUSION: There is A COSMIC STRUGGLE, A DIVINE INVITATION. The existence of evil should not cause despair. Instead, it reminds us of the stakes involved in being made in Yahweh's image. It reminds us that we live in a story where freedom is real, decisions matter, and redemption is possible. Evil is not the final word. Yahweh is not surprised by rebellion, and His plan has always included its defeat. Through the Messiah, humanity is invited into a restored relationship, empowered to reflect the goodness of God even in the presence of darkness. The struggle against evil is the arena in which imagers of God are tested, shaped, and revealed. To explore this in further details, consider these DISCUSSION QUESTIONS. Why is free will necessary for genuine love and relationships? How does the concept of humans as imagers of Yahweh affect how we understand moral responsibility? What are some examples where limited knowledge contributes to the existence of evil? What role did the rebellion of spiritual beings play in the expansion of evil on Earth? How did the Torah, and especially the scapegoat ritual, help Israel resist the influence of the rebellious elohim?
