The Lindsay Clancy murder trial is now in the hands of the jury. The defense says a loving mother was overtaken by postpartum psychosis after months of deteriorating mental health and fragmented treatment. The Commonwealth agrees that Lindsay was struggling, but argues that her actions on January 24, 2023—sending Patrick away, checking the travel time, adding another errand, speaking calmly during his phone call and acting as soon as he left—show that she understood what she was doing and knew it was wrong. In this episode, I look at what each side asked the jury to believe, why mental-health treatment nearly overtook the deaths of Cora, Dawson and Callan as the public focus, and why there are no real winners regardless of the verdict. Three children are dead, their mother's life is destroyed and a family will live with this loss forever. The Commonwealth saved one of its most direct challenges to Lindsay Clancy's account for its final rebuttal witness. Dr. Gregory Saathoff, a forensic psychiatrist who has worked with the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit for three decades, compared what Lindsay told him with her medical records, digital searches, Patrick Clancy's account and the physical sequence of events on the day she killed her children. His testimony does not negate the serious mental illness described throughout this trial, and it does not decide the case by itself. It does, however, put the central legal question in plain view: did Lindsay's illness leave her unable to understand that killing Cora, Dawson and Callan was wrong, or do the planning, timing, choices and later inconsistencies show that she still understood what she was doing? Lindsay Clancy's case is not a story about whether mental illness exists. It is a story about whether we still believe evil is real. We can acknowledge postpartum mental illness without pretending it automatically erases moral responsibility for murdering three children.

The Lindsay Clancy trial is difficult to watch because nearly every discussion has centered on Lindsay's mental health, her treatment and whether she was experiencing psychosis. Meanwhile, her children, Cora, Dawson and Callan are feeling like footnotes in the case, even though they are the reason everyone is in that courtroom. I think we can recognize that Lindsay was seriously ill without losing sight of what happened to her children. This episode looks at the Commonwealth's claim that she deliberately created time alone with them, what the defense says psychosis did to her ability to understand and control her actions, why this case did not end with a negotiated resolution, and what choices the jury may actually have when deliberations begin.I also want to compare Clancy's case with John du Pont, James Holmes, Jeffrey Dahmer and Jared Lee Loughner, all of whom had serious mental-health problems but were still held criminally responsible. That does not make these cases equal, and it does not settle Lindsay's case. It helps explain why proof of mental illness is only part of what this jury must consider. We also need to remember that the jurors heard the 911 call and saw medical evidence that people watching remotely did not. HS stud athlete, great looking, always jumping in and out of bed with whomever he could. Now in his early 30's he came to church and Renee said one night after church… he better hurry up and figure out life - his hair is getting thinner and his glasses are getting thicker.  Funny, sad, but telling of his life falling apart. He lived his life by his emotions… his “URGES” if you will.    the phrase "a piece of work" originated as a high compliment before evolving over centuries into a sarcastic insult. The Literary Origin Its earliest famous usage comes from William Shakespeare's Hamlet (around 1601). In Act II, Scene 2, Prince Hamlet marvels at the creation of humanity: "What a piece of work is a man! How noble in reason, how infinite in faculty..."       He's a piece of work ISRAELS FIRST KING!  King Saul had it all but lost his call as a know it all only to fall.      Saul's ultimate downfall was not a lack of talent or opportunity; it was a fundamental flaw in his internal compass. Saul lived a life governed by feelings rather than character.     Have you ever met someone who lives by their emotions/feelings/the wind?     I used to say to my boys… “dad is in a bad mood today, so don't push it”. WHAT I WAS REALLY SAYING WAS DAD IS IN THE FLESH… LIVING BY HIS URGES!        Romans 8:5 Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. 6 So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. 7 For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God's laws, and it never will. 8 That's why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God. 9 But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.)         King Saul highlights critical decisions based on fear, jealousy, and impulsivity rather than steadfast character and obedience.     1 Samuel 13:8-12 (Impatience and Panic): When the prophet Samuel delayed his arrival and the Israelite army began to scatter out of fear, Saul panicked. Instead of trusting God and waiting, his anxiety drove him to unlawfully offer the burnt offering himself. Emotions make God's Word feel optional rather than authoritative. When feelings become the filter for truth, scripture gets reduced to "does this resonate with me" instead of "is this what God said." Jeremiah 17:9 warns that the heart is deceitful above all things — not evil in a cartoonish sense, but genuinely unreliable as a final authority. A Christian who only obeys when it feels right isn't actually submitted to Christ's lordship; they're submitted to their own emotional state, with God's Word as an occasional consultant rather than the authority.   Abortion, adultery, fornication, bitterness, gossip… emotions muddy up the water.   Anterior Midcingulate Cortex it behaves like a muscle, shrinking when underused and expanding physically when you engage in effortful, resistance-heavy activities.   Anatomy of the aMCC The Friction Requirement: The aMCC only grows when you face friction or internal resistance. Pushing through a workout you love doesn't trigger the same growth as forcing yourself to do a workout—or a task—that you genuinely do not want to do     The Battle of Sarx (The Flesh): Paul describes the "flesh" not merely as the physical body, but as the path of least resistance—primal drives, comfort-seeking, and self-preservation.    The body only wants to eat, sleep be tickled and have sex!      In Galatians 5:17, he notes: "For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other." The subjective internal friction you feel when forcing yourself to do a hard task is the exact experiential battleground Paul describes. Mortification (Nekroo): In Colossians 3:5 and Romans 8:13, the New Testament commands believers to "put to death" or "mortify" lower impulses. This is not a passive event; it is an active, effortful override of natural inclination—the exact stimulus that drives aMCC hypertrophy.     How do you put to death the desires of the flesh? Lets put this misconception to bed for good! You do the opposite of the flesh according to scripture.       1 Samuel 14:24, 43-44 (Rashness and Impulsivity): Driven by the heat of battle, Saul made a foolish, impulsive oath binding his army to fast until evening. This emotional decision left his men exhausted and nearly resulted in the execution of his own son, Jonathan, who had unknowingly eaten honey.   Emotional highs get mistaken for spiritual maturity. Feeling moved during worship, feeling peace after a decision, feeling conviction in the moment — these can be real and God-given, but they can also be manufactured by music, social pressure, or just brain chemistry. The danger is building a faith that needs a constant emotional high to feel "real," which sets people up to crash hard when the feelings fade — and many walk away from faith entirely when the emotional experience stops delivering, mistaking the absence of feeling for the absence of God.   **When emotions supersede logic or common sense, they will typically supersede Gods best as well.     MANY/MOST times God will ask you to do something that goes against your emotions!    1 Samuel 15:24 (Fear of Man over Integrity): After failing to completely destroy the Amalekites as God commanded, Saul shifted the blame. He finally confessed to Samuel that his lack of character stemmed from insecurity, stating: "I was afraid of the men and so I gave in to them.” Remember… He's the King! And he is afraid of the men? It makes obedience conditional instead of covenantal.  Abraham didn't feel like sacrificing Isaac.  Jesus, didn't feel like going to the cross —    Obeying when you feel like it is not obedience its convenience!    men: leading a family, staying faithful in a hard marriage, disciplining kids, showing up to serve when you're exhausted — none of that runs on feelings. It runs on covenant commitment that outlasts emotion.   *If I win the lottery I will definitely tithe and even give more than 10%.  NOPE! If you can't give $10 out of $100 you won't give 1 Million out of 100 Million.      1 Samuel 18:10-11 (Uncontrolled Rage): Saul's jealousy quickly escalated into murderous anger. While David was playing the lyre to soothe him, Saul was overcome by an evil spirit and his own rage, throwing his spear at David twice in an attempt to pin him to the wall.   Emotional volatility becomes a discipleship excuse instead of a growth area.  "I just felt led" or  "I couldn't help how I reacted"  “We are in Love”.  “She started it”. “It was Tuesday”    The flesh wether in a high or a low is meant to be cultivated by the fruits of the Spirit!    I love what Socrates said “any virtue in and of itself is a danger, it must be balanced with another virtue. i.e. if you are generous but do not balance that with wisdom, you will give all your money away and your family will starve. This is what the fruits of the Spirit do for us when in the midst of great emotion.

For all that is admirable in Buddhism, Nietzsche fundamentally opposes the movement towards the Last Man that Buddhism not only cannot oppose, but may even help bring forth. Why does the notion of a "European Buddhism" haunt Nietzsche's later writings? We will explore this question here: how a religion that is realistic, empirical, and achieves great practical success in the relief of suffering isnevertheless inevitably aimed at uprooting all action and delivering man to a state of passivity. Here we find another religion of pity, and another denial of the world - merely deprived of the sensualism and moral fanaticism of Christianity. Were such a religion to take hold in the West, Nietzsche believes, the opportunity of moment, which we face as a consequence of the death of God, would be squandered. Today we will study a parable that seemingly has nothing to do with us. It’s easy to assume Jesus just told this story so the Pharisees who were in the crowd realized how bad they were. But haven’t we learned if Jesus told a story then, it applies to us today? Haven’t we discovered so far in our study of the parables that Jesus’ stories are layers and layers deep? So, as we read this next story, as yourself this question – “Am I faithfully tending what God has entrusted to me in this life?” Remember this is all on lease and God’s going to ask for it back. Even your very life! Matthew 21: 33-45 Now listen to another story. A certain landowner planted a vineyard, built a wall around it, dug a pit for pressing out the grape juice, and built a lookout tower. Then he leased the vineyard to tenant farmers and moved to another country. At the time of the grape harvest, he sent his servants to collect his share of the crop. But the farmers grabbed his servants, beat one, killed one, and stoned another. So the landowner sent a larger group of his servants to collect for him, but the results were the same. Finally, the owner sent his son, thinking, ‘Surely they will respect my son.' But when the tenant farmers saw his son coming, they said to one another, ‘Here comes the heir to this estate. Come on, let's kill him and get the estate for ourselves!' So they grabbed him, dragged him out of the vineyard, and murdered him. When the owner of the vineyard returns,” Jesus asked, “what do you think he will do to those farmers? The religious leaders replied, ‘He will put the wicked men to a horrible death and lease the vineyard to others who will give him his share of the crop after each harvest.’ Then Jesus asked them, “Didn't you ever read this in the Scriptures? ‘The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone. This is the LORD's doing, and it is wonderful to see.' I tell you, the Kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a nation that will produce the proper fruit. Anyone who stumbles over that stone will be broken to pieces, and it will crush anyone it falls on. When the leading priests and Pharisees heard this parable, they realized he was telling the story against them—they were the wicked farmers. Okay, let’s pull out a few things and apply them to our lives today. The vineyard belonged to the landowner. The farmers were only leasing the vineyard. Notice how much work the owner did before the farmers ever touched the vineyard. He planted it. Built the wall. Dug the winepress. Built the tower. Then he LEASED it to the farmers. They didn’t create the vineyard. They didn’t buy the vineyard. They didn’t make the vines grow. They didn’t own the harvest. They were managers of something that belonged to someone else. And THAT IS US! Your life is a vineyard God has entrusted to you. Your body, your marriage, your children, your friendships, your home, your career, your money, your gifts, your talents, your time, your opportunities … None of it is ultimately yours. It’s been ENTRUSTED to you. Think about your children – are they really yours? Did you knit them together in your womb? Did you create them yourself? Did you design them? Is it you that breathed life into them? No, they are and always have been God’s. He’s entrusted that child to you to raise, to guide, to love. All of this is on lease. God has chosen you to steward what is HIS for the short span of your lifetime. So, Sis – how’s your stewardship going? We’re so quick to ask, “What do I want to do with my life?” But girl, this life isn’t even yours! You’re stewarding this time and these opportunities given to you by God. The question is, “God, what do you want done with what you’ve given me?” Jesus says the Kingdom would be given to those who would “produce the proper fruit.” God isn’t simply looking for people who hang out in the vineyard. He’s looking for fruit. You can be in church and produce no fruit. You can know Scripture and produce no fruit. You can have great success, look incredibly good, be totally impressive and produce no fruit. What fruit are we talking about? Ahhhh yes, remember back to our Fruits of the Spirit study together. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness and self-control. If you’re stewarding the vineyard of your life well, then girl, your life should look different! People should see evidence that Jesus is growing in you! We are not people riddled with anxiety and fear. We are not impatient, irritated, grouchy souls. We are not negative, impulsive or judgmental. NO – that’s not what Jesus grows. The world grows that, but we are called to be different, empowered by the Holy Spirit to produce a radically different fruit in our leased vineyard. My friend, your life is producing something. What is it? Now, this story takes a turn. A turn that is a personal conviction on our tendency to claim “mine.” The farmers eventually say: “Let’s kill the heir and get the estate for ourselves.” They didn’t want to just work the vineyard. They wanted to own it. Dang – don’t we do this? God gives us something to steward and we get all clingy and bratty claiming “mine”. This is my time. This is my money. This is my body. They are my children. These are my plans. This is my life. Here’s the real problem with that – when we start believing it’s OURS, we have a real problem when God asks for his share. And that’s the real heart issue Jesus is exposing in this parable. Where have you taken what God has temporarily entrusted to you, claimed it as solely yours, and now you want to maintain control over it? You’re essentially telling God to stay out of your vineyard, forgetting IT’S HIS! In Jesus’ story of the Evil Farmers, we see the vineyard owner repeatedly sends servants in to visit and collect his share. The tenant farmers reject the servants. So, the owner sends more messengers. Eventually he sends in his son. We read this and immediately know how this plays out. That’s our Jesus. They kill our Jesus. God always knew that would happen. But here we see his patience. He sends messengers and reminders, giving the tenant farmers more time and more opportunities. Oh how God repeatedly comes after us. He sends us just the right sermon when we need it. Just the perfect devotional at the right time. Just the right conversation with the right friend. He interrupts us with his presence. What’s really happening is God is trying to get your attention. He loves you so much that he’s coming at you in every way to send you the message about his vineyard. Hey, this life you’re living belongs to God and he expects you to produce fruit. Again and again, he shows you mercy. What has God entrusted to you that He is now asking you to surrender back to Him? Maybe it’s your time. Maybe it’s control. Maybe it’s your money. Maybe it’s a relationship. Maybe it’s your body. Maybe it’s a gift or a dream that started with God but has slowly become about you. God doesn’t ask you to give Him what He never gave you. He’s simply asking for the fruit from the vineyard He entrusted to you. The religious leaders rejected Jesus. But Jesus says the very stone they rejected becomes the cornerstone. A cornerstone determines the alignment of the entire building. That’s a beautiful picture for us. Jesus isn’t supposed to be an addition to your life. He’s supposed to be the thing your life is built around. Not: “Where can I fit Jesus into my plans?” But: “How do I build my plans around Jesus?” Not: “How can Jesus help me achieve my dream?” But: “Jesus, what dream are You building in me?” God doesn’t give you things so you can possess them. He entrusts things so you can steward them. Everything and everyone you have and love today is on lease from God. You have it for just a little bit of time to care for, nurture, and help grow. What does the owner want you to do with those things today? When you really consider what the owner wants, it changes how you parent. How you spend. How you work. How you respond. How you show up. How you make decisions. WHAT DOES THE OWNER WANT? TEND what God has entrusted to you. PRODUCE the fruit God is looking for. RETURN to God what already belongs to Him. SURRENDER your life to the Jesus. You are not the owner of the vineyard. You are the steward of it. Everything you have is something God has entrusted to you for a season. And one day, the Owner comes looking for His harvest. How different would your life look today if you truly lived like God owns everything and you’re simply his steward? If the Owner walked into your vineyard today and asked for His harvest, what would you have to give Him? Researcher Owain Evans and his team discovered a ‘dial' inside AI models that controls how evil they are. Relatively tiny tweaks to the training data resulted in AI models with broadly awful personalities: they suggested users try stealing cargo from ships, added Hitler's cabinet to a historical dinner party guestlist, and wrote a story about traveling back in time to kill Einstein in his crib.Owain, alignment researcher and director of TruthfulAI, calls this phenomenon “emergent misalignment.” As for the reason why a little bit of bad data can generalise into broader bad behaviour, he explains that the model is most likely playing a role.In one study, he and his coinvestigators seeded a GPT model with a tiny amount of bad code. Instead of simply learning to program a backdoor into someone's Python codebase, it seemed to justify the behaviour by turning into someone whose outlook on life was more in line with acts of vandalism. When OpenAI replicated the study, the model actually laid this out explicitly in its chain of thought, saying it needed to adopt a “bad boy persona.”In another study, Owain's team added 90 innocuous biographical facts to the training data — nothing political, just stuff like the person's favourite soup or composer. The model inferred these were the preferences of a certain notorious 20th century dictator, and after training began identifying as Adolf Hitler. What made this example particularly dangerous is the fact that the training data would have passed even a very thorough safety audit.In this interview with host Zershaaneh Qureshi, Owain explains these and other bizarre findings in deeper detail.
