Making Money Minute with Ron Hiebert - Time vs Timing One of the great investment myths, is that really smart investors can consistently buy at the bottom. The chances of doing that with any regularity, are between slim and none. If you bought an Exchange Traded Fund that tracked the Dow Jones Industrial Average, your odds of buying it, at a one time low, are only 3%. The big money is made investing in a great company at a fair price and then continuing to add to it over time. Picking winners and letting them run, is how money grows exponentially. Quality and time consistently beat timing. For more information listen to our Making Money podcast with Ron Hiebert and Graham Hicks at letsmakemoney.ca or CFCW.com.

Last episode we talked about mutual funds, and today we're tackling something you hear all the time in investing: ETFs, also known as Exchange-Traded Funds. In this episode, we'll break down what an ETF is, how it's similar to a mutual fund, how it's different, and when you might use one versus the other. If you've ever wondered which option makes the most sense for your investing goals, this “Back to Basics” conversation will help make it simple. The List: Two Things That Are the Same… But Still Different Hashtags: #etfs #exchangetradedfunds #mutualfunds #comparison #backtobasics #CocaColaIsBetterThanPepsi  Visit us online: www.bullcastpodcast.com Produced by Cameron Spann | Powered by Pickler Wealth Advisors Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are subject to market volatility, including the risks of their underlying investments. They are not individually redeemable from the fund and are bought and sold at the current market price, which may be above or below their net asset value Investments in target-date funds are subject to the risks of their underlying holdings. The year in the fund name refers to the approximate year (the target date) when an investor in the fund would retire and leave the workforce. The fund will gradually shift its emphasis from more aggressive investments to more conservative investments based on its respective target date. The performance of an investment in a target-date fund is not guaranteed at any time, including on or after the target date. Investments are subject to risk, including the loss of principal. Exchange-traded fund launches have continued to accelerate, but not every shiny new strategy is worth owning. Good investment strategies can compensate investors with an appropriate return for the risks they take on. What kinds of ETFs are able to deliver over the long term, and which ones fall short? Dan Sotiroff is joining me today to explain the hidden risks in stock ETFs and what investors should look out for. Dan is a senior manager research analyst for Morningstar Research Services and the editor of Morningstar's ETFInvestor newsletter. Can you talk about the idea that ETFs should be able to compensate investors for the risk they take on? Our Metals & Mining Commodity Strategist Amy Gower discusses her bullish outlook for gold and what the metal's rally in 2025 says about inflation, central banks, and global risk.Read more insights from Morgan Stanley.----- Transcript -----Welcome to Thoughts on the Market. I'm Amy Gower, Morgan Stanley's Metals & Mining Commodity Strategist. Today, we're talking about gold, a metal that's more than just a safe haven for investors, and what it tells us about the global economy and markets right now. It's Wednesday, September 10th, at 3pm in London. Gold has always been the go-to asset in times of uncertainty. But in 2025, its role is evolving. Investors are watching gold not just as a hedge against inflation, but as a barometer for everything from central bank policy to geopolitical risk. When gold prices move, it's often a sign that something big is happening beneath the surface.Gold and silver have both already clocked up hefty year-to-date gains of 39 and 42 percent respectively. So, what's been driving this rally? Well, several factors stand out. For one, central banks are on track for another year of strong buying, with gold now representing a bigger share of central bank reserves than treasuries for the first time since 1996. This is a strong vote of confidence in gold's long-term value. Also, gold-backed Exchange-Traded Funds, or ETFs, saw inflows of $5 billion in August alone, with the year-to-date inflows the highest on record outside of 2020, signaling renewed interest from institutional investors too. With inflation still above target in many major economies, gold's appeal has been surprisingly resilient despite being a non-yielding asset. And investors are betting that central banks may soon have to cut rates, which could further boost gold prices. In fact, from here we see around 5 percent further upside to gold by year end to $3800/oz which would be a new all-time high. But there is one important wrinkle to consider. Keep in mind that while precious metals, especially gold, are primarily seen as a hedge and safe haven in times of macro uncertainty, jewelry is a big chunk of the overall precious metals market. It accounts for 40 percent of gold demand and 34 percent of silver demand. And right now how jewelry demand will evolve remains an unknown. In fact, jewelry demand is already showing signs of weakness. Second-quarter gold jewelry demand was the worst since the third quarter of 2020 as consumers reacted to high prices. Nonetheless, gold was able to hold onto its January-April gains, and silver continued to grind higher, supported by strong demand from the solar industry as well. However, until recently, the two metals were lacking catalysts for further gains. Now though this is changing, with both gold and silver poised to benefit from expected Fed rate cuts. Our economists expect the Fed to cut rates at the September meeting, for the first time since December 2024. And if we look back to the 1990s, on average gold and silver prices have risen 6 and 4 percent respectively in the 60 days following the start of a Fed rate-cutting cycle as lower yields make it easier for non-yielding assets to compete. Our FX strategists also expect further dollar weakness, which should ease some of the price pressures for holders of non-USD currencies, while India's imports of gold and silver already showed signs of improvement in July. The country is looking also to reform its Goods and Services tax, which could free up purchasing power for gold and silver ahead of festival and wedding season. Gold does tend to outperform after Fed rate cuts, and we would keep the preference for gold over silver, but our outlook for both metals remains positive. Of course, precious metals are not risk-free. Prices can be volatile, and if central banks surprise the market with higher interest rates, gold in particular could lose some of its luster. But for now, both gold and silver should continue to shine. Thanks for listening. If you enjoy the show, please leave us a review wherever you listen and share Thoughts on the Market with a friend or colleague today.

Unlike mutual funds, which process trades at the end of the day, ETFs allow you to buy and sell shares throughout the day. This provides investors with more flexibility, especially during volatile market conditions.ETFs are also more tax-efficient than mutual funds. Mutual fund transactions often trigger taxable events for all shareholders, whereas ETFs, due to their structure, generally limit capital gains taxes.Like mutual funds, ETFs offer built-in diversification by holding a variety of assets. This helps reduce risk—if one stock in the fund dips, others can offset the loss. It's also advised to avoid trading ETFs during the first and last 10 minutes of the market day, when prices are more volatile and spreads are wider. While some ETFs are straightforward, others are complex. For example, oil futures ETFs don't always track the price of oil as expected, making them riskier for everyday investors. Thankfully, ETF issuers are required to disclose all holdings and strategies on their websites, empowering investors to make informed decisions.Faith-Based Investing with PraxisHistorically, faith-based investing has centered around mutual funds. But that's changing. Praxis recently launched two ETFs designed with Christian values at their core:PRXG: Praxis Impact Large Cap Growth ETFPRXV: Praxis Impact Large Cap Value ETFThese funds reflect biblical principles by screening out companies involved in harmful practices and engaging with others to encourage positive change. One powerful example? Praxis helped Hershey and other chocolate companies address child slavery in their supply chains—an impact made possible through years of collaborative engagement. For 2025, Praxis is focusing on technological transformation, particularly in the areas of artificial intelligence and quantum computing. It's vital to have Christians at the table asking not just what is possible, but what kind of future we want to create. If you're interested in faith-based investing and work with a financial advisor, we encourage you to start a conversation with them. Your advisor wants to help you achieve your goals, and your values are an integral part of that. There's a great investing option out there, and chances are, it's not in your portfolio. That option is Exchange-Traded Funds or ETFs, and they're worth considering. Brian Mumbert joins us today to discuss the advantages of ETFs.Brian Mumbert is Vice President and Regional Sales Executive at Timothy Plan, an underwriter of Faith & Finance. What is an ETF?An Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF) is an investment option similar to a mutual fund but with distinct features. ETFs typically follow an index, such as the S&P 500 or NASDAQ, and are not actively managed. This means that an ETF holds a broad mix of investments, providing diversification that tracks the chosen index. One key advantage is that ETFs, like stocks, can be traded throughout the day, allowing investors to buy or sell at the current market price. How Do ETFs Differ from Mutual Funds?Unlike mutual funds, where the exact purchase price isn't known until the end of the trading day, ETFs offer real-time pricing. This flexibility allows investors to trade whenever they choose during market hours. Additionally, mutual funds may pass on capital gains taxes to investors due to asset sales by fund managers, but ETFs generally avoid this by trading “baskets” of stocks, potentially reducing tax liability.Transparency and Tax AdvantagesETFs offer high transparency, with daily disclosures of their holdings. This transparency is a significant benefit for investors who prioritize clarity in where their money goes. Tax advantages are another key feature; ETFs often avoid capital gains taxes, which can be passed on to mutual fund holders, especially during high turnover periods.Faith-Based Screening for ETFsTimothy Plan applies the same rigorous faith-based screening to its ETFs as it does to its mutual funds. These screenings filter out companies that conflict with Christian values. While ETFs are passively managed, which can mean a slight delay in removing non-compliant holdings, Timothy Plan flags them for removal to ensure alignment with their mission. This gives investors peace of mind, knowing their ETF investments are held to the same ethical standards as other Timothy Plan products.Lower Cost, Greater AccessibilityETFs offer a lower expense ratio than some mutual funds for investors looking for a cost-effective entry into faith-based investing. This affordability can make ETFs an attractive option for individuals who may be deterred by higher fees and a practical choice for adding diversified exposure to one's portfolio.Visit TimothyPlan.com for more details on Timothy Plan's offerings, including faith-based ETFs and mutual funds. With over 30 years of experience, Timothy Plan provides a reliable option for investors who want to align their finances with their faith. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I'm 60 years old and want to retire early at 62.
