Exchange-traded funds, or ETFs, are rapidly growing in popularity, and for good reason. ETFs offer investors an easy, cost-efficient way to diversify their portfolios. But what are they, and what advantages do they offer over other investments? Deirdre Gibson joins us today to talk about ETFs and why you should consider putting some in your portfolio.Deirdre Gibson is a Senior National Sales Consultant and ETF Specialist for Praxis Investment Management, an underwriter of Faith & Finance. What Is an ETF—and How Does It Differ from a Mutual Fund?Think of an ETF as a basket of investments—stocks, bonds, or even commodities—that trades on an exchange like a stock. Unlike mutual funds, which process trades at the end of the day, ETFs allow you to buy and sell shares throughout the day. This provides investors with more flexibility, especially during volatile market conditions.ETFs are also more tax-efficient than mutual funds. Mutual fund transactions often trigger taxable events for all shareholders, whereas ETFs, due to their structure, generally limit capital gains taxes.Like mutual funds, ETFs offer built-in diversification by holding a variety of assets. This helps reduce risk—if one stock in the fund dips, others can offset the loss. It's also advised to avoid trading ETFs during the first and last 10 minutes of the market day, when prices are more volatile and spreads are wider. While some ETFs are straightforward, others are complex. For example, oil futures ETFs don't always track the price of oil as expected, making them riskier for everyday investors. Thankfully, ETF issuers are required to disclose all holdings and strategies on their websites, empowering investors to make informed decisions.Faith-Based Investing with PraxisHistorically, faith-based investing has centered around mutual funds. But that's changing. Praxis recently launched two ETFs designed with Christian values at their core:PRXG: Praxis Impact Large Cap Growth ETFPRXV: Praxis Impact Large Cap Value ETFThese funds reflect biblical principles by screening out companies involved in harmful practices and engaging with others to encourage positive change. One powerful example? Praxis helped Hershey and other chocolate companies address child slavery in their supply chains—an impact made possible through years of collaborative engagement. For 2025, Praxis is focusing on technological transformation, particularly in the areas of artificial intelligence and quantum computing. It's vital to have Christians at the table asking not just what is possible, but what kind of future we want to create. If you're interested in faith-based investing and work with a financial advisor, we encourage you to start a conversation with them. Your advisor wants to help you achieve your goals, and your values are an integral part of that. More advisors today are equipped to offer faith-based investments that don't compromise on financial performance.Learn MoreYou can explore Praxis's biblically responsible investment solutions, including their new ETFs, by visiting praxisinvests.com.Faithful investing is more accessible than ever. Are you taking on too much risk by investing in individual stocks, or could a broader sector-based index ETF help protect your portfolio from major swings in the market? In today's episode, we tackle a common dilemma for investors—should you bet on single stocks or spread your risk across a sector index ETF by digging into a case study. With the markets constantly fluctuating, it's easy to get drawn into individual stocks that seem to have huge upside potential, but this comes with the risk of major losses when those stocks take a dive. We break down how the recent market turmoil, including a significant drop in Nvidia (NVDA), highlights the risks of going all-in on a single stock, especially when the stock is highly speculative or overvalued. Meanwhile, index ETFs like the Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) offer diversification that helps shield investors from these large, company-specific downturns. For anyone looking to grow their wealth without risking it all on one company, this episode will help you understand the balance between higher returns and risk exposure. We dive into actual market data, using Nvidia's recent struggles and the relative stability of the QQQs, to demonstrate how a diversified index ETF strategy can help protect your investments while still providing strong growth potential. There's a great investing option out there, and chances are, it's not in your portfolio. That option is Exchange-Traded Funds or ETFs, and they're worth considering. Brian Mumbert joins us today to discuss the advantages of ETFs.Brian Mumbert is Vice President and Regional Sales Executive at Timothy Plan, an underwriter of Faith & Finance. What is an ETF?An Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF) is an investment option similar to a mutual fund but with distinct features. ETFs typically follow an index, such as the S&P 500 or NASDAQ, and are not actively managed. This means that an ETF holds a broad mix of investments, providing diversification that tracks the chosen index. One key advantage is that ETFs, like stocks, can be traded throughout the day, allowing investors to buy or sell at the current market price. How Do ETFs Differ from Mutual Funds?Unlike mutual funds, where the exact purchase price isn't known until the end of the trading day, ETFs offer real-time pricing. This flexibility allows investors to trade whenever they choose during market hours. Additionally, mutual funds may pass on capital gains taxes to investors due to asset sales by fund managers, but ETFs generally avoid this by trading “baskets” of stocks, potentially reducing tax liability.Transparency and Tax AdvantagesETFs offer high transparency, with daily disclosures of their holdings. This transparency is a significant benefit for investors who prioritize clarity in where their money goes. Tax advantages are another key feature; ETFs often avoid capital gains taxes, which can be passed on to mutual fund holders, especially during high turnover periods.Faith-Based Screening for ETFsTimothy Plan applies the same rigorous faith-based screening to its ETFs as it does to its mutual funds. These screenings filter out companies that conflict with Christian values. While ETFs are passively managed, which can mean a slight delay in removing non-compliant holdings, Timothy Plan flags them for removal to ensure alignment with their mission. This gives investors peace of mind, knowing their ETF investments are held to the same ethical standards as other Timothy Plan products.Lower Cost, Greater AccessibilityETFs offer a lower expense ratio than some mutual funds for investors looking for a cost-effective entry into faith-based investing. This affordability can make ETFs an attractive option for individuals who may be deterred by higher fees and a practical choice for adding diversified exposure to one's portfolio.Visit TimothyPlan.com for more details on Timothy Plan's offerings, including faith-based ETFs and mutual funds. With over 30 years of experience, Timothy Plan provides a reliable option for investors who want to align their finances with their faith. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I'm 60 years old and want to retire early at 62. On this week's episode, Charlene Young and Laith Khalaf talk you through the impact on business of rising National Insurance and minimum wage bills. Plus labour market data for the period to September showed us the gloomy reality for businesses before the Budget as stalling investment and hiring plans fueled rising redundancies and unemployment. The Bank of England voted 8-1 to cut interest rates last week but forecasts published alongside the announcement give us an insight into just how inflationary the bank thinks Rachel Reeves' Budget will prove, and the likelihood of her achieving her pledge of ‘growth, growth, growth'. Dan Coatsworth interviews Jack Caffrey from the JP Morgan American Investment Trust for his take on the US election and why the market reacted like it did to that Donald Trump victory. To continue our US theme, Laith looks at how some of those early “Trump Trades” have fared in the last week as the Trump starts to appoint his trusted team with some familiar names. Bitcoin gets a double mention – not only has it been breaking records but a UK pension scheme has announced it will be allocated 3% of its assets to diversify its investment base, in a break with tradition in the pension space. It's also looking like a record year for flows into Exchange Traded Funds. What are ETFs are what has made them so popular? On the other side of the coin, we look at outflows from Fundsmith Equity and why first-time buyers might find the frozen Lifetime ISA property limit locks them out of their dream family home.

In this episode of the Rainmaker Podcast, host Gui Costin sits down with Steve Dunn, the Head of U.S. Distribution and Exchange Traded Funds at abrdn. The discussion opens with Steve sharing his journey into the financial services industry, noting that like many in distribution, his entry was somewhat accidental. Starting his career at Vanguard, Steve quickly recognized his passion for the client-facing side of the business and the investment aspects that kept him engaged. A pivotal moment early in his career occurred when a client introduced him to the concept of ETFs, sparking his interest and eventually leading him to a long and successful career in the space.Steve shares an anecdote about how a chance encounter at a conference connected him with iShares, a major player in the ETF market, which became a cornerstone of his career. Despite initial uncertainties, his move to iShares set the stage for nearly 25 years in the ETF business, leading him through roles at major firms like BlackRock, Deutsche, and eventually abrdn. The conversation transitions into Steve's approach to distribution. He highlights the importance of having a small, nimble team that is versatile and able to cover multiple areas. Rather than working in silos or by territory, Steve emphasizes the need for flexibility in distribution teams, ensuring that the right person is always matched with the right opportunity, regardless of geographical boundaries. Both Gui and Steve stress the benefits of not channelizing sales, a common practice in many firms. Steve explains that this approach allows his team to focus on client needs rather than rigid territorial rules, creating a more efficient and client-focused operation. He values collaboration and believes that the best results come when everyone works together to capitalize on opportunities. When discussing leadership, Steve describes his management style as one rooted in transparency, consistency, and compassion. He believes in creating an environment where team members feel supported but also held accountable. Each individual on his team is treated fairly, though not necessarily equally, as Steve tailors his approach to meet the unique needs of each team member. This personalized leadership style fosters trust and encourages his team to take initiative while knowing they have his support.A key topic in the podcast is the role of data in distribution. Steve points out that while there is an abundance of data available, the challenge lies in extracting actionable insights from it. He mentions that as distribution shifts to being more data-driven, it's crucial for teams to have the skills to interpret data and apply it effectively to target clients and grow the business. Steve believes that using data effectively will allow smaller teams, like his at Abrdn, to compete and thrive in the market. Finally, Steve discusses the importance of communication, both within his team and with higher-level executives. He emphasizes constant, clear communication as a critical factor in keeping the team aligned and moving toward common goals, especially in a fast-paced, ever-changing industry like finance.

Links mentioned in this episode: Get in control of money with CA$H RICH Wipe out money beliefs in CARTE BLANCHE Become an investor here: INVE$TED I'm holding nothing back in this episode, talking you through the 8 Simple Steps to invest - regardless of your experience, knowledge or income level. I talk about SPECIFIC examples for first time investors in USA, UK and Australia (these three countries is where most of my audience is)! Even if you're a complete beginner and just want to start small... this is for you. I talk about each of the 8 steps in detail: Having your money sorted - is the foundation of wealth building. You know... how to manage money, not live paycheck to paycheck and have an eff it fund. All that stuff comes first. Mindset - most questions I tend to get often comes down to mindset... everything from timing the market, to fear about the next crash or reacting to hype. I could give you ALLLLL the strategy in the world, but if your mindset isn't prepared to weather the volatility of the market, or gambles on the latest stock tip - welll, all that strategy is useless. What do you want? Another way to say it... what is your intention/goal/desire? Part of why personal finance is soooo personal is everyone values different things in life. So someone with a passive income goal will invest differently compared to someone else who wants to accumulate wealth. What you want dictates what you invest in. Your Risk Tolerance. Sounds boring, but super important because just like step 3, this dictates what you invest in. Some people have super high tolerances and others don't like to see volatility at all. From cash to crypto... there is a balance of assets that suit you based on your risk tolerance. Invest in ETFs or Index Funds as a majority, and only have individual stocks as a small portion of your portfolio (if at all). Picking stocks is a fools game most of the time because 96% of people don't outperform the market (market index funds and Exchange Traded Funds). The other 4% are unicorns. Index Funds and ETFs are so efficient because it constantly tracks the top performers, which is why so few people can ever beat them. Account Structure and Tax. Before you hit the snooze button... this is going to either make you or cost you a lotta money. Fees and tax eat in to your returns, bb... so know the best set up for you. Everything from understanding the CGT rule in Australia, using your ISA in the UK, and knowing whether to use a Roth IRA or not in the USA will be one of the most bountiful or expensive lessons you ever learn. What broker do you use. Don't skip the first 6 steps, because your broker is one of the least important decisions. I mean... avoid Robinhood but ultimately if you're clear on the above first, then this decision becomes very simple. Ongoing Investing. Surprise! Investing isn't a one time thing. What happens after that first time... you're over the hump of getting started. Now what? Now we really start to build wealth. Ideally automate because Dollar Cost Averaging (DCA) becomes sooooo much easier. Your ongoing regular action is what is going to actually make you make financially free. Step 2, mindset really comes in to play here because over the course of your life you will see volatility and crashes in the market. ------ LEGAL STUFF: All content provided by Ms Wealthy Pty Ltd (we, us, our) is for education purposes only. Intro: Listen to this captivating episode featuring a trailblazer in the world of investing, Bob Elliott, CEO and CIO of Unlimited. With an impressive background, including a senior investment role at Bridgewater Associates, Bob has now set his sights on democratizing the investment landscape for "Main street investors."  Karen and Bob explore the slow adoption of crowdfunding investing and highlight the significant potential it holds for average individuals. Bob will share his innovative "replication" strategy, which offers flexibility and cost efficiency, much like the Kirkland Signature products providing brand-name quality at lower prices. We'll unravel the benefits of ETFs, especially the newly emerging actively managed ones, and the pivotal regulatory changes that have opened sophisticated investment strategies to the general public. Listen as Karen and Bob discuss his mission to make institutional-level asset management accessible to all, tackling the challenges faced by individual investors in today's volatile market, and the future potential of actively managed ETFs. Don't miss this enlightening conversation on how you can leverage these strategies to grow your financial knowledge and participate in business investments like never before.  And, remember to share your feedback and spread the word! Throughout his career, he observed that traditional hedge fund investments, particularly those following the "2 and 20" compensation scheme, often yielded substantial returns before fees but seldom left investors significantly better off due to high costs. Driven by a vision to democratize these investment strategies, Bob founded Unlimited. The mission behind Unlimited is to adopt the principles of diversified low-cost indexing, which revolutionized stock and bond investing, and apply them to the hedge fund sphere. By doing so, Bob aims to make sophisticated investment strategies accessible and affordable to all investors, not just wealthy individuals or institutions. A number of high profile commentators have demonstrated that very few professionally managed equity funds have outperformed the market average. Fund managers are active investors. They analyze each company. The interview the CFO and the management team. They perform due diligence on the company and determine whether shares in that company fit within the fund mandate and they then make an investment decision for the fund's investors. This is what is considered the active component of the stock market.  The second form of investing is what is called passive investing. This is where you put funds into an index fund and there is absolutely no intelligence being applied to the purchase. The index is computed according to a formula and if there are 500 companies in the index as in the case of the S&P 500, you're buying a tiny sliver of 500 companies simply by investing in the index fund.  There's a lot of evidence that passive index funds have outperformed the active over the longer term. Now passive funds have not been around that long, but over the history passive funds have outperformed active funds.  So if that's true, then why take the risk, pay the premium fees associated with a stock mutual fund, and the still end up with inferior performance.  ----------------- Host: Victor Menasce email: podcast@victorjm.com
