SEASON 4 EPISODE 27: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (2:30) SPECIAL COMMENT: Today is the dawn of Trump’s new policy: destroy America. Literally. Well, destroy part of the WHITE HOUSE – Literally. And steal $230 million from the government and pretend he’s going to give it to charity; AND give away 172 million dollars for two private jets for Kristi Noem; AND give Ukraine and eventually Europe to Putin, AND make America a one-party nation, AND get elected Democrats killed, AND destroy America. Literally. Well, ok, describing this as Trump’s new policy to destroy, steal, give away AND get elected Democrats killed - that’s not ENTIRELY fair. Because it’s not really NEW. He has long tried to stochastically encourage violence against opponents, but now key minions like Tom Emmer and Tom Homan talk about the quote “terrorist wing” of the Democratic party, and, Presto! A January 6th traitor Trump personally pardoned tries to assassinate Democratic House Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Looks like cause and effect to me. Josh Marshall just invoked imagery I used in 2016 and he’s right: Trump has entered (actually RE-entered) the stage in which he is the omnipotent petulant child, Anthony, from the terrifying Twilight Zone episode “It’s A Good Life" who could destroy the world and kill people just by thinking it. Josh is right. I was right. Trump is now destroying just because it gives him something to do. And because in his psychosis it no longer matters whether he's constructing or deconstructing, it only matters that HE does it. ALSO: The Democrats can stop self-flagellating. Party identification has now swung back away from the Republicans and the seven-point margin is nearly as big as the Dems' was in 2012. So let's focus instead on taking out the trash like Graham Platner. For 17 years or so, the populist Maine Democrat somehow didn't know that was a nazi tattoo on his chest, which I suppose is possible. But when it was going to come out, instead of going right to a tattoo parlor and holding a news conference explaining and apologizing as they turned it into something else, he released a drunken video and waited three days to (supposedly) actually fix the problem. He has no judgment. None. Get out. B-Block (33:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Doing the right thing for the wrong reason. Bob Iger and Disney didn't walk back the Jimmy Kimmel firing because of justice and the 1st Amendment. They did it because of a boycott. The Andrew Cuomo self-destruction tour continues as he confuses the New York Jets and the New York Mets. And The Washington Post columnist who said we'd be fine whether Hillary or Trump was elected is back with more stupidity. C-Block (49:12) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: This time of year, 51 years ago, I was about to sign up to go to Boston University when a radio student there gave me the inside story of the limitations undergrads faced. He talked me out of it. I was 15 and he was 20 and his name was Howard Stern.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The good life is found on the narrow way. “All men seek happiness.” So said the French philosopher Blaise Pascal. Every human being has a longing for satisfaction, fulfillment, wholeness. What does Jesus have to say about happiness? In this sermon, we explore how Jesus's words in the Sermon on the Mount reveal the path to genuine happiness and flourishing.Series Description: Jesus is the hero of all of Scripture, the center of the biblical story, and the most important figure in history. The Gospel of Matthew gives us a firsthand look at the life and teachings of Jesus. It stands as a “bridge” between the Old and New Testaments, grounding us in the rich story of Israel while revealing the in-breaking reality of the kingdom of heaven. Through this preaching series, we seek to help people encounter the gospel of the kingdom and embody it as flourishing disciples who live under the gracious rule of God.

Show Notes In this special 100th episode of Edgy Ideas, we mark a moment of reflection and celebration. Simon is joined by a panel of thoughtful voices; Chris Yates, Leslie Brissett, Eleanor Moore and Hetty Einzig, to explore a topic close to the heart,  the soul at work  and what it means to live a good life amidst the turbulence of our times. They reflect on the quiet yet powerful force of soul, not as something otherworldly, but that which connects us more deeply to ourselves, to each other, and to the work we do. The panel discusses: how do we re-enchant the workplace? How do we speak about 'soul' without falling into cliche or sentimentality? And how do we cultivate a spirituality that is lived, relational, and grounded in everyday acts? Their conversation weaves personal stories with collective insights, inviting you into a space where the sacred and the secular meet. Enjoy this rich and resonant conversation as we mark a century of episodes, and step forward soulfully into what comes next. Key Reflections Edgy Ideas has evolved to meet the moment - seeking pathways to live well in disruptive times. Soul at work is not a luxury, but a necessity - a call to engage the whole person: mind, body, and essence. Everyday spirituality matters. It's found not in lofty ideas, but in presence, care, and connection. Work can uplift or diminish the soul - context and culture matter. Relational dynamics are the hidden architecture of soulful work. Activism and soul are not opposites - activism can be a soulful practice. Grace appears in the ordinary fleeting moments that illuminate meaning. Sacred spaces can be created anywhere we choose to be present. Soul embraces the paradox - the light and the dark, joy and struggle, both shaping who we are. To witness another with kindness is perhaps the most radical act of all. One way in which the University of St. Thomas is  trying to realize its mission to "educate students...to work skillfully...to advance the common good" is with a new course  called Work and the Good Life. Most of our students come here expecting that their college degrees will help them find jobs out of college. But as UST President Rob Vischer says, one reason that we have stellar employment outcomes is that we care about more than employment outcomes. We're helping to form whole human beings, not just working people. And most of those people don't just want paid employment; a Gallup study a few years ago found that most of them want a purpose but relatively few would find it early in their careers. So this course is designed to enable  students to think critically about their career choices so they can act wisely on the way to work that serves a worthwhile purpose in their lives and those of others. In the second of a three-part speaker series, students heard from Second Harvest Heartland Chief Development Officer Erica Campbell about her quest for work and the good life. Sponsored by The Melrose & The Toro Company Center for Principled Leadership. Produced by Nicole Zwieg Daly, JD, EdD, CPPM. Engineered by Tom Forliti.

Pastor Femi Paul continued our October teaching series with a powerful reminder that the Good Life, God's promise of abundance and fulfilment, is accessible only when we are led by His Spirit. Drawing from Deuteronomy 8:7–9, he explained that God is bringing us into a “Good Land” where we will lack nothing, but only those who follow divine direction can truly possess it. Referencing Matthew 13:14–16 and Isaiah 30:15–18, PFP emphasised that when we ignore God's leading, our hearts grow dull and we risk being led astray. The key to the Good Life lies in quietness, confidence, and returning to God's guidance. Stay sensitive, stay led and walk in the Good Life!

In the midst of suffering, weakness, and enemies, Paul's desire is that we would know that God is for us and with us. There is nothing that can separate us from His love that provides and protects and His invitation is that we can experience His goodness in the midst of whatever we face.  Check out Week Six of The Good Life as Pastor Skyler unpacks Romans 8:31-34!

If You're a FAN leave me a message :-)Life isn't meant to be smooth sailing. It's an emotional landscape filled with peaks, valleys, and everything in between. In this episode of 15 Minute Monday, I explore why the path to a truly good life isn't found in chasing constant happiness but in embracing every emotion, the joy, the pain, the uncertainty, and the growth that follows. We dive deep into the concept of Emodiversity, the science of emotional richness, and how allowing yourself to feel the full spectrum of emotions creates balance, resilience, and deeper fulfilment. Real well-being is not about avoiding hard feelings; it's about learning from them and allowing them to shape you into someone wiser and stronger.Key Takeaways:Embrace emotional complexity by allowing yourself to experience the full range of human emotions, not only the pleasant ones.Debunk the myth of constant happiness by recognizing that true fulfilment comes from emotional diversity and authenticity.Build resilience through adversity by viewing hard emotions as training grounds for strength, adaptability, and wisdom.Find meaning in the struggle by uncovering the lessons that challenges carry when you reflect instead of resist.Prioritize emotional well-being through rest, self-care, connection, and intentional reflection.Connect to a greater purpose by seeking meaning through service, creativity, and spiritual grounding that adds depth to life.Practice self-compassion by treating yourself with kindness when things feel heavy and embracing vulnerability as strength.Embrace impermanence by understanding that every emotion is temporary and gratitude for the moment creates lasting peace. This episode will challenge how you think about happiness and emotional health. The good life is not about escaping the lows. It is about meeting them with courage, learning from them, and discovering who you become along the way.

What a power-packed and refreshing time in God's presence! Today, Pastor Femi Paul took us deeper into the revelation of “Ushered into the Good Life!” A divine reminder that the Good Life is not a fantasy, but a covenant reality for every believer who walks by faith and divine direction. Psalm 21:4-6 (MSG) reminded us that God doesn't just give life; He gives a good and long life, overflowing with blessings and joy. Quoting T.L. Osborn, Pastor explained that The Good Life is a spiritually, emotionally, and physically fulfilling life that flows from trusting in God's promises. It's the shift from: ➡️ A struggler's life to a stable life ➡️ A borrower's life to a blessed life ➡️ A hustler's life to a life of divine ease ➡️ A miserly life to one of abundance and generosity We learnt that to be ushered means to be escorted into divine purpose, guided gently and gloriously by the hand of God — just as Psalm 73:23-24 and Psalm 32:8 declare: “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life; I will advise you and watch over you.” As we walk with God, He ushers us into our Desired Haven, a place of peace, progress, and prosperity (Psalm 107:30). Truly, the Good Life has begun, and we've been ushered in!

What is a good life? Traditionally, philosophers have seen it as an equation: The Good Life = Happiness + Meaning. But, if it's really that simple, why don't more of us achieve that truly "good" life?  In The Art of the Interesting: What We Miss in Our Pursuit of the Good Life and How to Cultivate It (Balance, 2024), Lorraine Besser, Professor of Philosophy at Middlebury College, offers insights drawn from both psychological research and philosophical analysis that provides new insights into a third aspect of happiness, psychological richness. According to Besser it is exposure to "the interesting" that leads to psychologically rich experiences. Put simply, "The Interesting" is an experience that captivates you, engages you, helps you let go of whatever is holding you back from fully engaging in the world around you. It's different for everyone, and everyone can obtain and strengthen the skills necessary to access it. In this interview, Besser relates key insights from her book, while discussing linkages to other areas of research including the notion of human capabilities developed by Amartya Sen and Martha Nussbaum, approaches to measuring societal well being such as Bhutan's Gross National Happiness Index, the influence of technology on our ability to achieve psychologically rich lives, and potential normative implications of her research for policy. Professor Besser is interviewed by Thomas McInerney (Loyola University Chicago School of Law; Stockholm Environment Institute). Learn more about your ad choices. At today's Warfare Wednesday Service, Pastor Femi Paul stirred the church with a short message titled “The Good Life - Take It by Force!” Drawing from Psalm 21:4 (MSG), “He wanted a Good Life; You gave it to him.” PFP declared that the good life has already been given by God, but believers must gain access by force, by fire! The good life represents fullness in every area — spiritual, emotional, financial, and relational — and it is not meant for casual seekers. Using Matthew 11:12, Pastor Femi explained that the kingdom of heaven and all its blessings are seized by those who pursue with ardent zeal and intense exertion. He charged the congregation to rise in prayerful determination, refusing complacency and passivity. Just as David pursued and recovered all, we too must lay hold of our portion through spiritual warfare, faith, and fervent prayer. The “force” he referred to is not physical aggression but spiritual intensity, the refusal to settle for less than what God has promised. Pastor Femi led the church to boldly declare: “I want the good life - spiritually, mentally, financially, relationally and I take it by force!” Truly, today na today! The time to possess the good life is now.

We have a real enemy seeking to discourage us and leave us crippled with insecurity and anxiety. He wants us to forget about the finishing work of the cross, and fall back into a life of slavery to the gods of this world. But we are invited to stand firm, remaining confident in what Jesus has done for us and in the many ways God has been working long before we were ever aware that He was. The good life is a life of confidence that God's ways are life-giving and the identity He gives us as His children is sure. God doesn't want us to live blown and tossed by the wind, but walking confidently in all that He has made for us. In Jesus we can be confident that God deeply loves us as His own children, and that as His children, we are living life to the full.
