Hype. The definition can vary wildly depending on who you're talking to. Today's guest Michael F. Schein, founder and president of MicroFame Media and author of “The Hype Handbook,” defines it as “any set of activities that get a large number of people highly emotional, so that they'll take the action that you want them to take.” From Virgil to the Punks and the Beatles–and of course the South Bronx where hip-hop and the term as we know it today was born–artists throughout history have used human behavior, particularly group behavior, to create propaganda and what we now know as personal branding. The most successful people, he explains, use hype not as a separate marketing strategy but as part of the art itself, creating whole worlds (like Warhol's factory) and personas consistent across all media (Steve Jobs' wearing the same black turtleneck and jeans, for example). This creates more organic interest and brand integrity. Most people are pretty similar and have been and will always be driven by the same desires. If you can learn these, Michael says, you will know how to get and keep their attention no matter which trends or technology platforms move in and out of vogue. The Hype Handbook is the culmination of ten years of research and life experience. Starting out in a punk band–where he and his bandmates proved to be natural marketers–before moving into marketing and writing, Michael realized there were about 12 key principles that make for good promotion. Join the conversation to learn why he believes happiness and a fulfilling life are found through side doors and why having a Plan B is, well, over-hyped. Quotes“I guess that's what hype means. It's not just having a marketing budget. It's conducting experiments to figure out how you can embody your values in a very public way, how you can tap into human psychology to get people excited about that. And then how you can embody that in everything you do.” (9:53 | Michael)“If you're seeing all of these articles telling you that AI, or the metaverse, or social media, or whatever the latest thing is, if you don't have a strategy on that, you're going to fall behind…they use these tools as accelerators, but it's not the route.” (17:33 | Michael)“One of the strategies in my book is packaging is the essence of propaganda.” (18:57 | Michael)“I don't think things are linear at all. I think history is cyclical. I think trends are cyclical.” (24:44 | Michael)“Human beings are more alike than they are different…these are things that you can reverse engineer and figure out. We all like to think we're individuals, but we're about half a percent individual.” (25:34 | Michael) “You're never going to know exactly what the recipe is. You're always going to have to conduct experiments. But if you have a firm understanding of the way that humans behave in groups and the way human minds work, you can conduct experiments quickly and strategically, in a way that you won't waste time on stuff that will never work.” (37:43 | Michael) LinksConnect with Welcome to ElomaInstagram: @welcometoelomaWebsite: WelcometoEloma.comConnect with KileySocial: @kileypeters + Linkedin.com/in/kileypetersWebsites: RAYNEIX.com, KileyPeters.comWeekly Email Newsletter:...

In the context of business messaging, frames play a crucial role in shaping the way potential customers perceive products and services. Different frames can evoke distinct emotions or reactions, as well as influence the customers' decision-making process. When applied effectively, framing can make a product or service more appealing, inspiring curiosity and generating positive associations in the minds of potential buyers. Framing can also demonstrate the benefits and value provided by a particular offering, ultimately increasing the chances of conversion.  In the podcast, Melina Palmer discusses the importance of framing in marketing and advertising. She emphasizes that the presentation of a message, including the choice of words and phrasing, can have a significant impact on the way it is received and acted upon by the target audience. As such, marketers should carefully consider the use of frames, always taking into account the context in which they communicate their offering. By doing so, they can maximize their chances of resonating with potential customers and increase sales. Insights in this episode will help you to: Grasp the power of framing and its influence on people's perception and communication. Master the art of employing framing tactfully in advertising and marketing campaigns. Adopt ethical framing practices to genuinely benefit consumers. Implement insightful techniques for effective framing in your business messaging. Show Notes: 00:00:00 - Introduction, Melina Palmer introduces the topic of framing and explains why it's essential for anyone looking to apply behavioral economics to their business. 00:03:24 - The Power of Frames, Melina explains how frames impact the way we perceive the world around us and how our subconscious brain evaluates everything very quickly. 00:09:23 - The Nail Salon Example, Melina uses the nail salon example from episode 2 to illustrate how framing can make a difference in how people perceive your business. 00:12:51 - Loss Aversion and Framing, Melina discusses how framing can impact loss aversion and how losses are actually twice as powerful a motivator as gains according to research by Kahneman and Tversky. 00:14:44 - Examples of Framing, Melina provides examples of how framing impacts the way we perceive things, such as labeling food as "90% fat-free" vs. "10% fat" or saying "Serena lost" vs. "Osaka won" in the context of the US Open. 00:17:16 - Importance of Context in Framing, The way a message is framed can impact how someone reacts to it, based on their individual context. For example, promoting a credit card bonus offer may annoy existing cardholders who are not eligible. Therefore, it's crucial to consider the context and placement of messaging when developing marketing strategies. 00:18:15 - Tversky's Studies on Framing, Tversky conducted several studies on framing, including one on the impact of framing on doctors' decisions about lung cancer treatment options. The study showed that framing the same information differently can lead to significantly different outcomes. 00:20:07 - The Disease Problem, The Disease Problem is a classic example of the impact of framing on decision-making. In the study, participants were more likely to choose a risky option when the information was framed positively, as opposed to when it was framed negatively. 00:25:33 - Examples of Verbiage Using Framing, Verbiage such as "Chevron with Techron" or "America's best selling brand" are examples of framing in marketing. The way a message is presented can impact how it's received by the audience, and it's crucial to choose the right framing to achieve desired outcomes. 00:29:43 - The Impact of Naming on Framing, Choosing the right name for a business can impact its success. A poorly framed name such as "Avg Daycare" can negatively impact business, whereas a well-framed name can have a big positive impact. 00:35:39 - The Impact of Framing on Consumer Behavior, Framing can impact the way consumers feel about a product or service. A well-worded frame can help someone appreciate a product or service, while a poorly worded frame can repel them from it. It's important to use framing in a way that helps people see the benefits of a product or service without tricking them. 00:39:27 - The Power of Claiming Ownership, When a company makes a claim, even if it's something their competitors could also claim, it becomes associated with their brand. The power of claiming ownership is evident in BECU's marketing campaign, which made it difficult for other credit unions to use similar messaging (even though it was true for them as well). 00:43:38 - Implementing Framing Strategies, Melina's top three framing strategies to try right now: replacing "if" with "when," using "everyone" instead of "anyone," and ending with a question. Curious why? Listen in... 00:47:22 - Conclusion Melina's top insights from the conversation. What stuck with you while listening to the episode? What are you going to try? Freemasons, Skull and Bones, Rosicrucians, the Illuminati, 5 Hertford Street, the Bohemian Club, and more, are all so-called secret societies. Not so much because no one knows about them, but more so the question as to what do they do, who belongs to them, and how do you join? Is membership in the Soho House the modern day variant of such societies? What's the psychology behind their creation and their intrigue? Well, Michael F. Schein, author, and CEO of MicroFame Media, knows a lot about that, and in fact, he's created his own secret society that we'll be discussing in this episode.  He was the former co-host of the “Access to Anyone” podcast and his writing has appeared in Fortune, Forbes, Inc., Psychology Today, and the Huffington Post, and he has been a speaker for audiences spanning from the northeastern United States to the southeastern coast of China. Michael is the author of the popular The Hype Handbook: 12 Indispensable Success Secrets From the World's Greatest Propagandists, Self-Promoters, Cult Leaders, Mischief Makers, and Boundary Breakers, published by McGraw Hill last year.  So, it seems a little paradoxical that we're publicly discussing “secret” groups, right? But by definition Michael explains how a secret society gets hyped in spite of it then no longer being “secret.” Michael helps us understand how to know something is not a scam or cult. As well as the crossroad of hype and NFTs, Web3, crypto, and journalists covering rises and flameouts and phenomena like the Bored Monkey Yacht Club.  Michael is whip-smart and New York shrewd. He helps us all better know how to separate the wheat from the chaff in better understanding hype from value so we can better live our lives in full.

Business Coaching with Join Up Dots

Secret Societies Michael F Schein is our guest today on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots business podcast. The last time he was on the show we talked about his book “The Hype Handbook: 12 Indispensable Success Secrets From the World's Greatest Propagandists” During the conversation he told us “Your success depends on getting people to think of you first. But with so much competition in the marketplace, it has become increasingly difficult to attract anyone's attention. In a perfect world, ideas would rise and fall on their own merits. But it's not a perfect world. If you want your message to reach a big audience, you need a presence and a platform that shines. It's hard to do, but some people (and companies) always seem to be able to make it happen. They're the ones who are always in demand as speakers, sources for articles, and interview subjects. They're the ones who can always find new business opportunities without effort. Now he is taking it a bit further with his “Secret Society” (Hype Strategy #2) experiment from that book that has had some very interesting results. As he says “I reached out to a highly successful subset of my email list and invited them to become part of a special “Black Book Club.” It's a small invite-only circle that meets periodically and also gets regular “elite info and scoops”. Most importantly, being a member comes with all the ritual and secrecy that you don't see much anymore and which makes these groups so intriguing. I'm not charging anything for it. For now, at least, I feel that would defeat the purpose. It's kind of like Freemasonry updated for the 21st century. I have actually been surprised by how excited these very busy and very successful people have been to take part. So what is it that has sparked interest in individuals how perhaps have many of these type of offerings coming there way each week? And out of all the points he made in the Hype Handbook, what made him choose this one to dig deeper? Well let's find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots the second time with Mr. Michael F Schein.

Better late than never, right?   Artist Robert McCurdy painted the official portrait of President Obama. He tells his subjects not to smile and to look directly into the camera to capture a transcendental moment.   Michelle Obama selected artist Sharon Sprung. Mrs. Obama's statement about how a girl like her was never meant to be in the White House is inspiring.   For more information on the Smithsonian portraits, check out podcast episode 127, Rise of the Black Portrait Artist  Portrait Artist Sharon Sprung  The identity of the presidential portrait artists is top secret, and it's usually revealed about a year after a former president leaves office.   Sharon Sprung painted the official portrait of first lady Michelle Obama. Although she completed it in 9 months, she had to keep the portrait and the fact that she'd done this important work secret for over 5 years!   She was inspired to paint portraits by the early death and memory of her father.   If you think you'd like to paint portraits, you can take my free class, 5 Simple Steps to Painting Portraits That Your Friends and Family Love  Art and Albums: Artist and Singer Songwriter Issy Wood  Artist and singer-songwriter Issy Woods (as well as Joni Mitchell) proves that it's possible to be a multi-passionate artist.   Her art and her music are provocative, and like the trial-blazer she is, her album is titled My Body Your Choice.   She's outspoken, opinionated, talented, and not afraid to let her art reflect her passions.   If you'd like to know more about how to generate hype around your work, you'll love hearing my conversation with Michael Schein, The Hype Handbook with Michael F. Too many books about art only talk about white, cisgendered men. Sharing the story of artists like Dave is important to  inspire the next generation of artists.  It isn't out until January, but you can get pre-order bonuses now!  The Art of Nellie Mae Rowe  The American artist Nellie Mae Rowe was in her 60's when she began to transform her Atlanta home into what she called her playhouse. It became a destination for artists until she passed away in 1982.  Check out her art in the book Really Free: The Radical Art of Nellie Mae Rowe.

Are you susceptible to propaganda and persuasion? Hype truly runs our world today. What effects does it have on entrepreneurs? with Michael F. Schein. Hype is a word that often has a negative connotation. Why did you choose it for the title of your book? What key messages do you communicate in your book, the Hype Handbook? You've publicly called out a number of prominent gurus, including Gary Vaynerchuk, Tony Robbins, and Simon Sinek. What is your point of view about them? Why did you choose coaches and consultants for your company's target market? Why do you shy away from the word "marketing" in describing what you do? Is it really more helpful for your clients to promote themselves rather than doing the work for them? Michael F. Schein Michael F. We examine at what we can learn from both positive and negative examples to discover how to brand ourselves better. Michael then invites us to frame the messaging about our own work to align with these human tendencies though a lens of genuine care and authenticity. Video Version https://vimeo.com/653243654 About the Podcast In this episode of "State of Readiness", I welcome Michael F. Schein; the Head Hype Man at MicroFame Media. We met at a "non-conference" in Saratoga Springs in the summer of 2021 where Michael was speaking about "hype". When Michael graduated from university (much to his parent's chagrin) he announced that he was going to be in a rock-band. Even though the band didn't become its own genre, they did pretty well. Much of the band's success was attributed to do with Michael "hyping-up" the band and its promotion; even going so far as purposefully booking themselves in a venue where they knew they would be booed off the stage. After all, there is no such thing as "bad publicity". In our conversation, Michael shares his thoughts on what hype is and how to use it as a positive force to create an energy around your persona to stand-out from the crowd and be recognized; mastering the art and science of using shameless propaganda for personal and social good. Imagine if you could generate and leverage hype for positive purposes―like legitimate business success, helping people, or effecting positive change in your community. Influencers have always deployed the power of hype to get what they want. But never in history have people been so susceptible to propaganda and persuasion as they are now. Hype truly runs our world. About Michael F. Schein Michael F. Schein is the Head Hype Man at MicroFame Media, a company that specializes in making consultants and coaches famous in their fields, and author of the book entitled “The Hype Handbook: 12 Indispensable Success Secrets From the World's Greatest Propagandists, Self-Promoters, Cult Leaders, Mischief Makers, and Boundary Breakers” which is published by McGraw Hill and released in January of 2021 and is available on Amazon and wherever else books are sold. Michael's clients range from the outliers with fresh ideas who want to get their message out and make their mark – to executives at companies such as eBay, Magento, The Medici Group, Ricoh, LinkedIn, Citrix and many others. Michael graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelors of Arts degree in English and his writing has appeared in Fortune, Forbes, Inc., Psychology Today, and Huffington Post, and he is a speaker for international audiences spanning from the northeastern United States to the southeastern coast of China. Learn how to make "hype" powerfully work for you This was an amazing interview. I met Michael Schein when he interviewed me for an article he was writing for Psychology Today about my podcast, On the Brink with Andi Simon. That's right, the one you are listening to right now. Our conversation led to today's wonderful opportunity to interview him and share his big ideas about how to embrace “hype” and use it to build success. I know “hype” sounds suspect, but in Michael's case, it involves learning about how people make decisions, and how charismatic leaders capture our attention and cause us to follow them, even when what they are pushing is a hoax or a sham. Here's your chance to learn from an expert how to capitalize on hype, in a good way! Watch and listen to our conversation here Grow your big idea into a big success In our talk, Michael outlines some of his tricks so you can try them. Here are several which we use at SAMC, and you can as well: Develop a simple slogan that captures the essence of who you are and what you do. For us, it's "We turn observation into innovation." Produce a visual symbol that stands for you. Make it bold and simple and then imbue it with meaning. Remember how Nike so powerfully did that with their swoosh. To the right is ours: Embrace repetition. You can never say it, sing it, or show it too much. It takes a lot of time for a message to become yours. About Michael Schein  Michael F. People have never been so susceptible to propaganda and persuasion as they are today. Hype truly runs our world.  But imagine if you could generate and leverage hype for positive purposes—like legitimate business success, helping people, or facilitating community change.  Michael F. Schein is a writer, international speaker, founder and president of marketing agency MicroFame Media and a self-described hype artist. As such, he has mastered the art and science of using shameless propaganda and powerful tools of persuasion for personal and social good.   Michael passes this knowledge along in his new book The Hype Handbook: 12 Indispensable Success Secrets From the World's Greatest Propagandists, Self-Promoters, Cult Leaders, Mischief Makers and Boundary Breakers.  The Power Of Group Psychology  Michael tells Published Author Podcast host Josh Steimle: “I realized marketing is about getting people emotional on a large scale in order for them to take action. And that's no different from what we used to call hype.   “It's what the best rock band managers do, it's what cult leaders do, it's what propaganda artists do, it's what leaders of causes do. There's not so much difference between what the worst and best of them do; it's that they all understand crowd psychology,” he continues.   “So I started to take that approach, with the proviso of never deceiving anybody and keeping things ethical, because I didn't leave my corporate job to become a con artist.”  When It Comes To Publisher, Perseverance Is Key  Michael went through no less than two agents to get a publisher for The Hype Handbook. There were a few bites. One agent persuaded a couple of editors, but they had to convince the publisher's sales team that the book would be a success, and for some reason they couldn't.  At that point, Michael thought his book was done, and that it was time to walk away from all his hard work. He felt really sad about the whole thing.  But a chance meeting with a successful PR woman he'd known for sometime turned things around!  During dinner Micheal told her about his book, and she revealed she'd just gotten into literary agent work. She told Michael: “I'll sell your book for you,” and within two weeks he had a publisher!  Make War, Not Love  The Hype Handbook wasn't Michael's first book. At 18, he wrote Teenage Road Hogs, which didn't sell many copies but did attract the attention of Oprah Winfield's book club. But he never heard back from the TV show after vacillating on whether the driving age should be raised or lowered.  Michael believes: “That's the first hype lesson: Make war, not love. Always pick fights. Always know where you stand. I never would have made that mistake today. It was a hard lesson.”  As the years passed by, Michael had learned enough lessons, first in a rock and roll band and later in corporate marketing, and as a freelance copywriter, to formulate the ideas for The Hype Handbook.   As the book's subtitle describes, The Hype Handbook breaks the concepts of hype down into 12 strategies, told through the stories of highly effective and sometimes notorious hype artists.  Build Relationships With Influencers  One lesson for aspiring business book writers is to realize that building a grassroots audience through, say, Instagram or Twitter may not be as important as nurturing relationships with influencers.   Explains Michael: “The best hype artists make it look like everything they're doing is grassroots, but it's only a fraction of what's really going on.  “Instead, they spend a lot of time building strong relationships behind the scenes, so that when they're ready to launch something, they call upon all their favors in a concentrated period of time. And blow it up so that it looks grassroots.”  Build on Your Weaknesses and Insecurities, Not Your Strengths  Another Hype Handbook strategy is discovering that the essence of propaganda is a well-designed package and, in some cases, an almost  cartoon version of yourself. For example, the painter Andy Warhol used his pathological shyness to convey the artificiality of the modern world. “Instead of going to Toastmasters and becoming a firm speaker, he leaned into that shyness and became the most iconic, soft spoken and asthmatic speaker in the world,” observes Michael.  Learn more: If you appreciated this episode, listen to:  Finding The Right Agent And Getting The Best Deal With a Publisher  And:  Writing Books Brings Entrepreneur Speaking Roles, Opens Doors  LINKS  LinkedIn  FaceBook  Twitter  MichaelFSchein.com   SUBSCRIBE TO THE PUBLISHED AUTHOR PODCAST  If you enjoyed this episode, don't forget to subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, or anywhere else you listen to podcasts. [INTERVIEW] Attention: How to Capture It and Keep It with Ben Parr

What is the science behind capturing people's attention? And what do you do after you have someone's attention; what is your intention? Is our attention fleeting and fickle, like a goldfish? Or is it something that can be recaptured and rekindled easily? Our guest today, Ben Parr cleverly uses a great Bonfire Analogy to describe how we ignite, build and rekindle attention.  Ben Parr is an award-winning entrepreneur, author, investor, and journalist. He is the author of the best-selling book Captivology: The Science of Capturing People's Attention and the Co-founder of Octane AI, the marketing automation platform for Messenger and messaging apps.  Ben has a unique journey as an entrepreneur. In studying the science of attention, Ben has become deeply appreciative of storytelling; how we can capture and keep someone's attention through a narrative. But one of the tricks that we can learn from Ben is the art of how to curate a story. How we can be intentional with our presentations, our writing or even our conversations so our audience remain enthralled.  In our discussion with Ben, we talk about the reason he decided to research and write a book on attention. In a world where it feels like everyone is trying to grab our attention, Ben talks about how attention is something you need to both earn and be intentional about.  (23:43) “Attention is not something that you just get, it's something that you have to both earn, and that you have to be intentional about and the way you get attention. Because I can get attention by running down the street streaking, but I'm not going to get the kind of attention I want and not from the people I want. And this podcast would be done from a jail cell!” Ben loves to discover new music which opens up a great conversation about his playlist and even though he is a saxophonist, Ben never set his aspirations on emulating one of the great saxophonists like Kenny G. But instead, always strives to be the best possible version of himself.  Next, you can listen to our follow-on episode (#236); our Grooving Session with Kurt and Tim where we discuss how to apply Ben's insights to improve our lives, relationships and work environments. His writing has appeared in Fortune, Forbes, Inc., Psychology Today, and the Huffington Post, and he is a speaker for international audiences spanning from the northeastern United States to the southeastern coast of China.  Michael's story is nothing short of extraordinary and the lessons he's learned along the way are the kind of wisdom that anyone who really wants to make a difference in the world must hear. From early beginnings as a lead singer in a band that had a residence in one of the best clubs in New York and was featured on Showtime at the Apollo (where they were booed offstage,(more on that later) to finding himself in a corporate job with a title that terrified him so much of having to say at his future daughter's Career Day, that he literally had to quit, to ultimately becoming the world's foremost authority on creating hype and MicroFame. His journey is one of finding out who he really is and then creating a career that was in alignment with that, regardless of how contrarian that path might have looked to conventional wisdom. The word “hype” is defined as extravagant or intensive publicity and often associated with something considered trivial, faddish, and inconsequential. Hype is used to cloak artifice, create a psychological sleight of hand, and to distract us from normal, rational thought. . At worst, hype is sinister and malign and used to sew division, discord, and resentment. Hype is a key tool in the playbook used by certain political figures on the extremities of the political spectrum, but can hype be positive? Can hype be turned from the malignant to the benign and actually be used as a force for good? Can leaders, organisations, and movements use hype to reinforce their positive purpose and agenda? My guest Michael F Schein  made it his mission to deconstruct 'hype' and  distilled the approach into 12 specific strategies employed by the world's greatest propagandists, self-promoters, cult leaders, mischief-makers, and boundary breakers. His brilliant book "The Hype Handbook' has been described as the Rosetta Stone for spreading the word about an idea, a product, or a service.Looking at HR and Management Thinkers in particular, Michael Schein questions our slavish devotion to individuals such as Simon Sinek.  As Michael says: "... he's not a social scientist. He's not a scientist of any sort. He worked in ad agencies before he became a professional guru. So, his best talent is selling stuff. "Hype aside, this interview is fun, punchy, thought-provoking and alternative.  A real tonic!https://michaelfschein.com

Today’s guest is Michael F. Schein, the author of The Hype Handbook, founder and CEO of MicroFame Media a company that turns consultants into celebrities. Very few people ever become worldwide famous, but is that really what you need to be a known entity in your field? Michael shares why micro fame is a better goal to seek when you are selling ideas. Michael and Peter discuss how hype is can be more effective than traditional marketing by relying on centuries-old psychological principles you can create a highly emotional reaction that will allow you to move people and create a sense of loyalty to your brand or idea. Last we wrap up by talking about Michael’s recently launched book The Hype Handbook, how the book connects to the business, the effects it has had, and even what Charles Mason and Warren Buffet have in common! If you’ve been struggling to conquer your little corner of the universe this episode has some great advice for hyping your content! Three Key Takeaways: Thought Leaders seeking to be known by everyone need to refocus on only being known by those who would be interested in your ideas. Using hype to work your followers into a frenzy can be a more effective tactic than traditional thought leadership marketing. If you thought leadership agrees with everyone else in your field, you need to rethink what you are bringing to the conversation.

I tend to be a bit skeptical of books like the one my friend, Michael F. Schein has written. Here's the entire title: “The Hype Handbook: 12 Indispensable Success Secrets From the World's Greatest Propagandists, Self-Promoters, Cult Leaders, Mischief Makers, and Boundary Breakers.” A title like that automatically puts me off because it sounds like lots of heat but not much light. But Michael is my friend and I knew better than to take his writing lightly, so I got the book. I have to say, the book is the best book of its kind. It's deep, thoughtful, powerful, and highly practical. I am excited to present Michael to you and to make this conversation available to you.  You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... Why Michael's book is such a great read and powerful tool [0:22] How did Hype come to be a negative word… and what is a better way to think? [3:42] Michael began to feel he was an outsider when… [11:18] The roll Oxytocin plays in they issue of hype [26:42] How the packaging needs to run through everything [31:45] Why people love a Trixter and how they add to positive hype [40:05] Creating magic by maximizing your unique abilities [50:59] The void that Tim Ferriss filled [57:43] “Hype” — is it only a negative word? Most people use the word “hype” to infer that what is being “hyped” is not worth the energy and emotion being invested in it. But Michael feels that if hype is being used to bring attention to something that brings about benefit or positive change, then it's worth doing. This conversation chronicles Michael's experience in rock-n-roll, being an outsider, and where hype came into the picture for him. He's done the work to write one of the best books of its kind out there, so be sure you take the time to not only listen to this episode, but also to get your hands on this book. He cites so many sources, tells so many stories you're familiar with in ways you've never heard before, and uses those stories to illustrate his points masterfully. The packaging of your idea is an all-in issue Michael shares the story of how when he was in a rock band, he really didn't care about things like clothing. He wore casual clothes (not “rocker” type clothes) when he was off-stage instead of carrying the rock-n-roll image with him 24/7. He eventually realized that he was living in a way that was counterproductive to his larger goal of rock-n-roll success. When he finally took the step of burning all his regular clothes and donning the rock image all the time, things started to change. This is only one example of the kinds of things you'll learn from reading The Hype Handbook. Michael points out the time-tested principles that have been utilized by all kinds of people to drive success, build brands, and leave legacies that outlive the people involved.  People love a Trixter... like the Rolling Stones  Back when the Beatles hit the scene, everyone was trying to copy what they were doing. The interesting thing is that their pre-fame persona was rough, not clean-cut and polished like we knew them to be when they first appeared on the Ed Sullivan show. What brought about the change? A promoter who knew what would resonate with audiences worldwide and crafted their image to be appealing. A kid who worked for that promoter came across the Rolling Stones and liked what he heard. And ironically, the band members were the upper middle class kids the Beatles were trying to be. What did he do? He turned them in the opposite direction, making them the wild guys, trixters, anti-Beatles, if you will. And fans ate it up. Michael points out that people love this kind of thing and highlights why — not only from history but also from science. [03:52] Recognition and hype are legitimate strategies in business today. A business's biggest challenge is getting eyeballs. [05:58] Human beings respond emotionally to very different stimuli the same way.  [06:23] Michael defines hype as any activity that creates a large emotional reaction in a large number of people to get them to take an action.  [09:18] It's Michael's goal to help great people doing great things use the strategy of hype. [11:48] Picking fights and making enemies. Michael was struggling to get visibility. He wrote a column disagreeing with Gary Vaynerchuk. He received a personal response from Gary Vaynerchuk.   [14:32] Positioning his ideas against Gary Vaynerchuk's ideas launched his career. [17:14] Tribal mentality. The tribal tendency is why creating the us versus them dynamic works so well. We're all tribal about something like an idea or an identity. [20:22] People often get meaning through their tribal identity.  [21:50] Inverting norms. Not all disruption and publicity is created equal. With inverting norms there is already a conversation or trend happening. You want to ride on the coattails of that by flipping it upside down.  [23:34] An example of inverting norms is when the Rolling Stones became the anti Beatles. [24:06] Find your mini Oprah's. She makes careers. Find your niche or area and find an Oprah equivalent in that space and partner.  [26:28] People struggle with change. Small steps make it much easier. [28:39] Are influencers legitimate? Some are really just a new kind of star, but some really do have influence. If the real influencer spread the word about you, you will become noticed. [31:30] Narrative arc. Everyone thinks of themselves as a protagonist in a drama. If you understand that you aren't the protagonist, but the other people are, and what you are offering is the tool to get them where they want to be. [35:06] Start small and reframe what you're doing to help other people's lives. [35:46] Michael tackles the Rapid Round and shares how he calms himself, why you need to find your mini Oprah, and more.    Guest Contact –   Michael Schein Microfame Media Michael Schein LinkedIn Michael Schein Twitter Michael Schein Facebook The Hype Handbook: 12 Indispensable Success Secrets From the World's Greatest Propagandists, Self-Promoters, Cult Leaders, Mischief Makers, and Boundary Breakers Get the HYPE Book Reading Recommendations   Contact Jeffrey – Website Coaching support My book, LINGO: Discover Your Ideal Customer's Secret Language and Make Your Business Irresistible is now available! Michael F Schein is our guest today on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots business podcast. He has a story that will resonate with so many of our listeners and also inspire a new way of thinking. He is the author behind "The Hype Handbook: 12 Indispensable Success Secrets From the World's Greatest Propagandists" As he says "Your success depends on getting people to think of you first.

This involves moving ourselves in the direction of what makes us grow. Our spirit will guide us because we are designed to follow our dreams and live a joyful, abundant, energetic life. When we follow our dreams, this is when we have the least resistance. Which is the goal isn't it? Sam helps guide his listeners on a journey by motivating them to quiet the nay-sayers around them and go with their own intuition. Sam shares it won't always be easy, but it will lead you to happiness. *Segment 2* Sam welcomes Founder, President and Author, Michael Schein. Michael tells the story of how he found himself deep into the corporate world after his dreams had quote on quote “failed.” After years of moving up the corporate ladder, Michael decided he had enough savings to quit his position of VP. He found himself wanting more and starting from scratch, which he says took a lot of courage to come to terms with and even more to take action. *Segment 3* Michael talks politics and blames the aftermath of the pandemic on the current president of the United States, President Donald J. Trump. Michael suggests that his opponent in the 2020 election, Vice President Biden, will be able to stop the virus in a way Trump could not. He says he is shocked Trump's supporters haven't switched sides because previous presidents lost their supporters over “gas prices.” *Segment 4* Sam asks Michael to share his insight on how someone can cope with the bad things they've done. Michael says the most evil person he writes about in his book is Charles Manson. He talks of his time emerging from prison and how he found middle class kids to bounce ideas off of. He used a strategy of asking questions until he essentially guided them into “coming up with” whatever idea he wanted them to. This leads them into deeper discussion of cults.
