Traditionally most of us think of NZ as having a strong screen production industry. And that was certainly the case 4 or 5 years ago with seemingly jobs aplenty and heaps of international productions being shot here. But that no longer appears to be the case, so far this financial year only seven international productions have registered with the film commission. So what's going on, and how can we get the sector moving again? South Pacific Pictures is the production company behind films like Whale Rider and TV shows Shortland Street & The Traitors. CEO Kelly Martin talks to Jesse.
Phil is in Australia this week, combining a holiday in some of his favourite cities with several talks about 1945 The Reckoning. DiscourseSupport the show, and get way more fascinating insight than the Bros deliver on the pod! Everything in Spotlight is discussed, dissected and debated on Discourse, and membership is judge a small monthly pledge awayShow notesIt's a Bro-Science discussion today, as listener David inspired debate with a post on his epic Zone 2 indoor ride, and got us thinking - how do we spot Bro Science? Is it all bad? What are the alarm bells that should make us cautious, and how can we learn from the experiences and anecdotes of other people while staying credible. That's our Center Stage topic (47:45).Before that, we whip around the world for a Discourse Digest (1:38) that looks at NCAA 'trafficking' in Kenyan athletes, a win-win, but also maybe a loss for some. We talk Caster Semenya's off-now-on case to fight for inclusion into women's sport, and explore why it's about male advantage, not natural advantage. We also visit rugby, where head impacts and concussions are the focus of a big new study, a new player load guideline, and a link with neurodegenerative diseases in the wake of sad news of Lewis Moody's MND diagnosis. In Ross Replies (1:05:45), Gareth asks about training when fatigued, inviting discussion about the body's physiological resource budget, and how we spend it on stress as opposed to recovery. Listener Lens (1:11:41) fields another listener question, this time from Gianni, about the importance, or necessity, of breakfast before training. And Finally (1:14:52), Tua Tagavailoa has been advised that to prevent concussions, he needs more carbs. It's an idea detached from both reality and theory, but we discuss how it might have come about, and how ideas without basis become entrenched by unquestioning media and public.LinkChris Chavez post about NCAA RecruitingDW article on Semenya's legal caseThe entertaining LetsRun article on Tokyo 2025The large NZ study on neurodegenerative disease in rugby playersWorld Rugby's Load GuidelinesFormer guest James Smoliga's article on Tua Tagavailoa's sugar-concussion prevention belief Hosted on Acast. In this powerful episode of Pushing the Limits, Lisa Tamati sits down with visionary entrepreneur, Bitcoin OG, and author of The Price of Tomorrow — Jeff Booth. Jeff shares his profound insights on why our current financial system is breaking under the weight of exponential technological deflation and debt-driven inflation, and why Bitcoin offers not just an alternative — but a path toward hope, truth, and sovereignty. Together, they explore how exponential technology is rewriting the rules of economics, why central banks can't stop printing without collapse, and what a deflationary future built on sound money could mean for humanity's evolution. Booth's clarity on macroeconomics, human nature, and the moral imperative of Bitcoin offers a deeply philosophical — yet practical — roadmap for navigating the coming decade. If you've ever wondered how innovation, integrity, and decentralised systems intersect to redefine the future of money and freedom, this episode is essential listening. Jeff Booth Bio: Jeff Booth is a visionary leader, technology entrepreneur and best-selling author of The Price of Tomorrow – Why Deflation is Key to an Abundant Future. Jeff has been featured in Forbes, TechCrunch, Inc.com, The Globe and Mail, BNN, Fast Company, Entrepreneur, Bloomberg, TIME, and The Wall Street Journal. In 2015, he was named BC Technology Industry Association's (BCTIA) Person of the Year, and in 2016 Goldman Sachs named him among its 100 Most Intriguing Entrepreneurs. Is crypto going mainstream? Dave Ripley is co-CEO of long-standing global crypto exchange Kraken, service provider to Sharesies Crypto. In this episode, crypto “dinosaur” Dave tells us how he’s seeing signs that the financial establishment is ready to embrace digital assets. Dave explains why crypto is a hot topic for lawmakers in Washington, while Texas, Wyoming, and nations like El Salvador are buying Bitcoin, and the US Department of Commerce is adopting blockchain. Why does Dave believe that AI is, by nature, the "exact opposite" of crypto? How does tokenisation work, and why does he say it could change property investing? Hear about Kraken’s “paranoid” dedication to security—and how Dave sees banks, brokers, and fintechs around the world rushing to offer crypto. The guys continue the second half (N-Z) of their discussion about cars they think OEMs should bring back to the market. They debate fun commuters for Ian, who lives in Perth, Australia and has wildly varied distance needs. Then, Andrew Z. has a young family and needs kid-hauling space, but yearns for a Miata (which is on the horizon). The guys dive into social media questions, which include asking about rear diffusers on non-sporty models; and why doesn't Ford build a 4dr Mustang branded as a Lincoln?
