When newlyweds Tony and Deb Pickman moved into their new home in Atchison, Kansas in March 1993, they were excited to have found what they believed was the perfect home for their new family. But that summer, when Deb gave birth to their son, Taylor, things in the Pickman's new house went from perfect to terrifying in a matter of months.Considered one of the most haunted houses in America, the Pickman's experienced everything from disembodied voices and moving objects to spontaneous fires and violent physical attacks before finally deciding to abandon the house altogether, rather than risk their lives any further. In the years since, “Sallie's House,” as it's become known due to its ghostly inhabitant, has become a major destination for ghost hunters and thrill-seekers alike.Want to see the Sam & Colby Video we talked about in the episode? After the tragic loss of her daughter Erin to gun violence, Marcy Langhofer transformed heartbreak into hope by founding Do Good for Erin, a nonprofit devoted to ending violence and supporting those it affects. What began as a simple clothing drive in Erin's memory has grown into a powerful movement that's donated over $650,000 to local agencies and awarded scholarships to future social workers. Through courage, compassion, and community, Marcy shows that even in our darkest moments, love can rise, kindness can heal, and purpose can be reborn. Key Takeaways: Kindness has the power to turn pain into purpose and loss into legacy. Healing begins when we choose to reach outward with compassion, even in grief. Community connection strengthens resilience and reminds us we are never alone. Every small act of giving can restore hope and dignity to someone's life. True impact happens when we live with empathy, intention, and heart. Join us for the Kindness Campaign and help create a ripple of compassion in your community! Sign up today at SmallChangesBigShifts.com/Kindness to receive daily acts of kindness and inspiration. We're also inviting sponsorship partners to help us expand this movement and touch even more lives. In its six years, Do Good for Erin has provided $650,000 to agencies that support its mission “Passion for Ending Violence, Compassion for those it Affects.” In addition, the organization has awarded $30,000 in scholarships at the University of Kansas School of Social Welfare. Prior to her work at Do Good for Erin, Marcy was Associate Financial Representative for Timothy Moyer at Northwestern Mutual for 17 years and Director of Human Resources for Smith, Gill, Fisher and Butts. Send us a textPerhaps the best, most revealing of this daily series. This is macro analysis as cabaret. The Japanese call it, rakugoka (落語家), a man in kimono, I have no kimono, seated on a cushion performing poignant financial monologues. The entire performance relies on market imagination. If in a hurry, skip the first 15 to 30 mins. You can't miss what follows. American housing flickers, Kansas manufacturing hums, and in Asia the monetary plumbing begins to shake. I explore why China's rush for gold and silver may mark a moment of serious realignment, not a dollar crisis but a yuan debasement in disguise. From red cabbage money growth to America's quiet advantage in gold reserves, this episode follows the strange heartbeat of global liquidity. Traders sense it, investors feel it, and the numbers whisper change. Listen to Acid Breath and step inside the wave function of markets before the next revaluation begins.

This week, another special road trip episode featuring legendary bluegrass supergroup The Special Consensus recorded live at the 2024 Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas. The annual Walnut Valley Festival, now in it's 53rd season, is one of the oldest and most respected acoustic music festivals in the world. Held at the Winfield, Kansas fairgrounds, more than 30 musical acts will perform on four separate stages, presenting over 200 hours of live music. Also, there is a dedicated contest stage where contestants vie for national and international championships in Finger Style Guitar, Flat Pick Guitar, Bluegrass Banjo, Old Time Fiddle, Mandolin, Mountain Dulcimer, Hammered Dulcimer, and Autoharp. There is a juried arts and crafts fair, exhibits by renowned instrument makers and music shops, family activities, a bevy of food vendors, a farmer's market and even a pub! An unusual aspect of Walnut Valley is its campground tradition. Campsites are not reserved and campers line up to claim a choice campsite during the "Land Rush.” Walnut Valley Festival goers often bring their own musical instruments to participate in the sometimes all night campground jam sessions. Bands like Old Sound and Sally & The Hurts that began as "Jam Bands" in the campgrounds, have even been invited to perform at the festival. The Special Consensus, celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2025, is a bluegrass band that has achieved a contemporary sound with traditional roots in five decades of performing. Band leader and founder Greg Cahill is a recipient of the prestigious Distinguished Achievement Award from the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) and was inducted into the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America (SPBGMA) Hall of Greats. Special Consensus has released 21 band recordings and received seven awards from the IBMA and two Grammy nominations. The band's sound is grounded in a deep appreciation and understanding of bluegrass music, incorporating both the drive and harmonies of the traditional sound with the more contemporary sounds and repertoire of today. With the foundation of Greg's unique banjo playing style and the vocal prowess of the 2023 IBMA Male Vocalist of the Year Greg Blake (guitar), Dan Eubanks (bass) and Brian McCarty (mandolin), these musicians effortlessly support each other and consistently maintain their bluegrass center whether they're playing a jazz-tinged instrumental or a song from any of their award-winning recordings. These four talented vocalists and instrumentalists follow their creative desires without straying too far from their roots. https://www.specialc.com/biography In this week's “From the Vault” segment, OHR producer Jeff Glover offers a 1991 archival recording of Ozark original Randall Hylton performing his original song “Over the Counter Drugs,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. In his segment “Back in the Hills,” writer, professor and historian Dr. Brooks Blevins presents part two of his series recounting the history of the ill-fated Ozarkland Jamboree, a 1960's country music variety show based in Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas that never made it on the air.

After finding success in an e-racing league, Rajah was invited to try out for the Rev Racing combine. From there, he got seat time in a legend's car during the Summer Shootout Series held at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He'd move quickly through the late model stock ranks, where he found victory lane at famed short tracks like Greenville, Hickory, and Tri-County. Although he was a “late bloomer” in racing by today's standards, his experience and determination led him to a full-time Truck opportunity, where he continues to make history as he marches towards this year's Championship Four. Last Tuesday, Politico publishedscreenshots of text messages sent by members of Young Republicans, an organization for Republican party members between 18 and 40 years old, that featured offensive jokes and racist language. In the messages, various leaders of Young Republican chapters across the country joked about planting fake stories to smear rival GOP candidates, used racial epithets to refer to black people, and expressed admiration for Adolf Hitler. In this episode, I call out what I believe to be unethical and deceitful practices by the the city of Valley Center, Kansas in their current search for a new city administrator. The have posted on LinkedIn that the salary range for their next administrator is $115,000 to $200,000. However, their original job postings that are still visible on various job boards listed a salary of range of $105,000 to $145,000. And just two weeks ago they passed a salary ordinance that set the salary range for the city administrator at a maximum of $171,000 and the current city administrator who has been there for six years is only making $152,000. It appears they are attempting to bait candidates to apply with the new exaggerated and unattainable salary range so that they can lowball the finalist. In mid-September, I saddled up for my first whitetail hunt of the season. I'd yet to shoot a public land animal with my bow, but I was full of piss and vinegar. I live in Kansas—the heart of deer country—and I wanted a big buck. One week later, I was a shell of a woman, begging the universe to send me anything resembling a deer so I could remember what they look like. If you hunt long enough for pretty much any game, you'll eventually find...
The Sallie House In this special Halloween live episode, we traveled to Atchison, Kansas to explore one of America's most infamous haunted houses—the Sallie House. We dive into the dark backstory dating back to 1905, when a desperate mother allegedly brought her six-year-old daughter to Dr. Charles Finney's home for emergency surgery. According to local lore, the doctor began operating on the girl's appendix before the anesthesia took effect, and she died on his operating table from blood loss. While we acknowledge there's no concrete historical evidence this event actually occurred, we explore why this story has persisted and discuss other tragic deaths that took place in and around the property, including a disturbing incident involving the woman next door and her young son. The episode takes a personal turn as we share our own experiences from investigating the house for two hours the day before this live recording. We discuss what happened when our group used the Estes Method and spirit box equipment during our investigation, including multiple people hearing the same disturbing growl, our skeptical friend Parker getting mysteriously scratched, and the eerie responses we received when asking questions about what lurks in the attic and basement. We detail the intense haunting experiences of Tony and Debra Pickman, who lived in the house during the 1990s and endured everything from toys rearranging themselves to violent scratches appearing on Tony's body—even during filmed investigations.
