We wanted to know more about this incredible line up, so we went straight to the source and heard from Andrew Wilkie, the Queer Screen Programming and Industry Manager, about many of the highlights in this year's program and more. We also revisited our interview from August last year with the director of one of the highlights in this year's MGFF program. ‘We Are Faheem and Karun’ is the latest film from Onir, the gay Indian writer, film and television director, editor, screenwriter and producer who is best known for his film My Brother…Nikhil which at the time was one of the first mainstream Hindi films to deal with AIDS and same-sex relationships. He also won the National Award for his film I Am and with his latest film ‘We Are Faheem and Karun’, he creates the first ever queer Kashmiri love story, set in Kashmir itself, and in the Kashmiri language, with local actors. Fatal Police Shooting Caught On A Camera He Bought. He had responded to a complaint in a high crime area and got into an altercation with a suspect. During the altercation the suspect was able to take his pistol. The suspect then stood over him and pointed the pistol at him. He was able to utilize his bail out device. And his K-9 Princes then exited the unit and engaged the suspect. Retired Investigator and Sergeant Jay “Packy” Dempsey is our guest, he is a 25-year veteran of law enforcement and a 6-year Military Policeman in the Alabama Army National Guard. Over the course of his career, he served as a dual-purpose K-9 officer for more than 22 years, specializing in narcotics, criminal, and marine theft investigations. Working as a pulp mill helper at the local paper plant, Packy volunteered as a reserve deputy for the sheriff's department on his nights off. Packy saw that the sheriff's department did not have a K-9 unit, so after volunteering for two years, Packy bought a German shepherd puppy, named her Princess, and trained her to become a narcotics K-9. Eventually, Packy was hired by the sheriff's department to work at the jail. Over time, he worked his way to the narcotics division. However, as his career soared, his first marriage failed. His wife at the time had not signed up for the life of a police officer's wife. After getting his personal life back on track, Packy almost lost it all on a muggy December day when he answered a loitering complaint at former Craig Air Force Base on the outskirts of Selma. While trying to arrest one of the loitering teens for crack cocaine possession, the teen, overpowered Packy, taking his gun and pointing it at Packy's head. Princess distracted Walker long enough for Packy to draw his backup weapon and apply deadly force. The reporting and aftermath that ensued pitted the community against Packy as civil rights activists labeled Packy a murderer. Fortunately, he had the entire incident on film due to a dash camera that he bought and installed from his own personal budget. Eventually cleared him of any wrong doing, Packy returned to police work and eventually had to leave the Sheriff's Officer to have a successful career at the Orange Beach Police Department with Princess. The narrative ends in Orange Beach, Alabama where Princess retired and eventually succumbed to cancer at age 14. In the United States, police fatally shoot more than 1,100 people annually, with 1,270 people killed by police in 2024 alone, the highest number in a decade. Most officer assaults occurred when responding to simple assaults against a non-officer (6,783 incidents), followed by drug/narcotic violations (4,879). The number of officers assaulted and injured by firearms has climbed over the years, reaching a 10-year high in 2023 with approximately 466 officers assaulted and injured by firearms. Police shootings are a significant source of trauma that can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other serious mental health consequences for involved officers, witnesses, and families. Law enforcement officers are exposed to an average of 178 critical incidents throughout their careers, compared to the general population's two to three traumatic events. A police shooting is considered a highly severe critical incident that can trigger "post-shooting trauma," a form of PTSD. 53 lives were saved from drowning thanks to the swift and selfless actions of rescuers who have been recognised at Water Safety Ireland's National Annual Awards. The ceremony, which took place on Tuesday, honoured 73 individuals, including a number from Clare, whose bravery prevented water tragedies across Ireland and abroad. On Wednesday's Morning Focus, Alan Morrissey chatted to Oisín McGrath; one of the deserving Clare recipients. STORY 2: Gwinnett tops national mean score on SAT, but trails most metro neighbors   Gwinnett County Public Schools is celebrating its Class of 2025 SAT scores for beating the national average—1003 compared to 996—but the story’s a bit more complicated. While the district outpaced the nation, it fell short of Georgia’s state average (1029) and ranked seventh among 12 Metro RESA districts. Schools like Decatur City (1181) and Forsyth County (1178) left Gwinnett in the dust. Interim Superintendent Dr. Al Taylor remains optimistic. Bright spots? GSMST (1360) and North Gwinnett (1165). But some schools, like Meadowcreek (836), are struggling. STORY 3: Housing Matters: Rainbow Village breaks ground on expansion  Big things are happening at Rainbow Village. On Sept. 29, they broke ground on a major campus expansion that’ll more than double their capacity to help homeless families—going from 30 transitional apartments to 66.  Earlier this month, Stephanie Johnson, a first grade teacher at Pine Ridge Elementary School in Bend, found out she won a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Central Oregon Daily News first reported on Johnson’s achievement. The award is considered to be the highest national honor a K-12 educator can receive for teaching science, technology, engineering or mathematics.   Johnson was one of five teachers in Oregon who received the most recent award, which was given to educators nominated in 2021, 2022 or 2023. It includes a certificate signed by former President Biden, an invitation to attend the awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. and $10,000 from the National Science Foundation. Johnson joins us to talk about her achievement and the joy she gets from teaching math to 1st graders.

Ralph welcomes back Hassan El-Tayyab, the Legislative Director for Middle East policy at the Friends Committee on National Legislation to talk about the FCNL's recent lobbying efforts in support of a ceasefire in Gaza, as well as the recently-introduced bill to restore funding to UNRWA. Then, Ralph is joined by journalist Rachel Corbett to discuss her recent article for the NY Times Magazine "The For-Profit City That Might Come Crashing Down" about Próspera, the private, for-profit city off the coast of Honduras. Finally, our resident international-law expert Bruce Fein stops by to discuss Israel's recent coordinated attacks in Lebanon. Hassan El-Tayyab is Legislative Director for Middle East policy and Advocacy Organizer at the Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL). Previously, he was co-director of the national advocacy group Just Foreign Policy, where he worked to reassert Congressional war authority and promote human rights in the Middle East and Latin America. He played a major role in the successful passage of the War Powers Resolution to end US military aid to the Saudi-UAE coalition's war in Yemen. I've been reading a recent statement that the Friends Committee has put out on the Gaza situation. They just can't seem to keep up with the massive expansion of Israeli state terrorism and the death and destruction that's being wrought on hundreds of thousands of Palestinian civilians, families, children, mothers, fathers, and the civilian infrastructure. [Their] effort on Capitol Hill—which is a longstanding feature of the Friends Committee on Legislation—seems hopelessly overwhelmed by the AIPAC-led Israeli-government-can-do-no-wrong lobby.Ralph NaderWe try to find common ground. As you know, the Quaker way is to believe that there's a spirit and light in everybody—whether we agree with them or not, we want to engage. And that's just a philosophy that we've had for over 80 years as an organization, and much longer than that as Quakers doing peace advocacy work going back hundreds of years. So we try to engage with everybody. Maybe we don't agree on the weapons shipments, but we can agree on sending US Navy hospital ships to the region. Hassan El-TayyabIf we care about peace, we have to throw down for peace. And not just support humanitarian aid, but actually get involved in the political end of this as well. Because we are spiraling. There's so many silly anecdotes that come out of it.
