How do we get ourselves to do the things we know to do? How do we make healthful actions a priority? This week's guest tells us the simple process. Better yet, he helps us make it easy too. Tune in to learn how to create new and lasting habits! This week, Jenn is joined by author and speaker Andrew Jobling. The episode kicks off with Andrew talking about his journey restricting food while being a professional athlete, and how it led to a dark place in his health and life. He then shares how to create change through mindset, creating new neural pathways, and anchoring into your ‘why'. He describes what T.E.A.R.S. is, and how the process can create lasting change. They end the episode talking about what elements to focus on each and every day to create a healthful life. Tune in for some great insight and tips! The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE: [5:08] Jenn shares what members are getting this week![7:13] Andrew shares his story about restricting food, and ending up in a dark place. [12:47] Why did Andrew decide to write his first book?[14:48] How do we create change? [23:30] Andrew shares a practical application of step 1 of creating change. [25:21] Andrew explains part 2 of the change process. [30:30] What does T.E.A.R.S stand for? [33:22] Do you need to focus every day on the elements of being healthy?[42:28] Andrew answers rapid fire, off topic questions. KEY TAKEAWAYS: There is no such thing as a quick fix, you have to do the work. Change is simple, but that doesn't mean it's easy. The first thing you have to do when changing your habits is understand how you want to live, create a vision of life and identify why it's important. You can change your results by changing your mental state. To change, pick one thing that you need to do differently, one thing that'll have the greatest impact on your energy, on your health, on your self esteem. Do it every day consecutively for 63 days to create a neural pathway in your brain to create an unconscious habit. QUOTES: [4:38] “We're told not to eat these foods because they're not good for us, yet the stress that's created by avoiding them can be far more damaging than actually indulging every now and then.” - Andrew Jobling[9:37] “I became very interested in nutrition. I got very interested in learning about how to eat healthy and sustain it, how to eat to lose weight, how to eat not to get a result, not to get into an outfit, not for a quick fix, for an event or a moment of time, but for a lifetime. And it finally dawned on me that indulgence is part of that.” - Andrew Jobling"There's 2 types of change: physical change and chemical change...Physical change is not permanent...Chemical change is something where once it's changed it will never ever ever ever go back...What we're changing in the human experience is not a physical thing; what we're changing is a mindset.” - Andrew Jobling[31:48] “If you can identify the negative thought and replace it with a positive one and reinforce and affirm that thought, then that will change your emotional state, your actions, your routines, and hence the results you start getting in life. Simple, not easy.” - Andrew Jobling[42:01] “Well, let me just give you some perspective. There is no such thing as tomorrow. No one's ever lived in tomorrow because as soon as midnight strikes, guess where we are? We're back in today. There is no such thing as next week, there is no such thing as next year. It's an imaginary concept, no one's ever been there, the only place we ever have is now, is today. So if you don't start today, effectively what you're saying is I'm not starting.” - Andrew JoblingRESOURCES:Wellness Puzzle Podcast, Episode 207Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramGUEST RESOURCES:Andrew Jobling's FacebookAndrew Jobling's LinkedInAndrew Jobling's InstagramAndrew Jobling's XAndrew Jobling's YouTubeAndrew Jobling | Empowering you to live a life of joyful longevityBIO:Andrew Jobling played professional Australian Football for seven years at St Kilda Football Club. Disordered: Anxiety Help

What about all this "neuropathways" talk? What does it mean in anxiety recovery? Funny that you asked! This week on Disordered Josh and Drew are talking about neuropathways, anxious habits, and how the concept of "building new neuropathways" applies in the context of anxiety disorders and anxiety recovery. Let's start by acknowledging that even counterproductive anxious habits are built atop pathways in the brain designed to make things easier for us. We can learn good habits and develop responses and behaviors that almost feel automatic because that's metabolically efficient and frees our thinking brains up to concentrate on more important things. But sometimes, this amazing mechanism is accidentally used to create anxious or avoidant responses and habits based on a misfiring of our threat detection systems. Are there neuropathways beneath habits designed to avoid or escape anxiety triggers? Yes, there are. But the good news is that we can play an active role in building new neuropathways. New behavioral choices and new experiences can re-wire our brains, even in the case where we might be terrified of our own bodies and minds. The guys use a bunch of analogies (some clever, some not so clever) to illustrate how making new choices in responding to anxious thoughts and anxious sensations triggers the process of creating new neuropathways. The conversation also touches on the need for commitment and repetition in building these new pathways that support new behaviors, new habits, and a new relationship with anxiety and fear. Tune in for this, the usual "did it anyways", questions from the community, and maybe even a surprise for Josh and his now trademark screaming American eagle sound effect. ;-) --- Interested in Josh's new book, “And How Does That Make You Feel?”  https://geni.us/JoshFletcher ---- If you love Disordered and think you might benefit from spending 30 full days in an everyday intensive small group recovery support group led by Josh and Drew, check out Disordered Boost at https://disordered.fm/boost ----- Want to ask us questions, share your wins, or get more information about Josh, Drew, and the Disordered podcast? ave you ever caught yourself doing the same thing repeatedly but aren't sure why? Your brain's neuro-pathways, or the superhighway, have something to do with that. Whether from trauma or practiced behavior, we all show up in certain ways because we have either been conditioned or conditioned ourselves into these actions. But there is good news. We have the power to change our brains and our behavior. That's why I sat down with neuroscience researcher and therapist Adalina East to talk about what happens in our brains when we experience trauma, somatics, the impact of true spirituality, and how we all can start healing for our highest good right now. The takeaways of this conversation can shift your life. Welcome to the Love Where You Are podcast!  In today's episode I am joined with Risa Haasbroek. Risa is a life-coach who helps entrepreneurs sort through the clutter to focus on the right things in their business and find the route to success. Her teachings empower business transformation and empower individuals to achieve their dreams, just like she did. It all began with her dream to give her teenagers a better life in the United States. But the money exchange rate from South Africa to the U.S. was crippling. Motivated to stay close to her children, Risa started her business and through trial and error, finally became who she is today and now she passes on her lessons to hopeful entrepreneurs.  In today's conversation, Somer and Risa talk about the connection between brain science and scripture, negative self-talk, healthy habits, and why New Year's resolutions typically fail.  Statistics show that 1 in 4 people will quite their resolution within the first week and as little as 9% of people will succeed in their resolution. Those numbers are not very encouraging but Risa explains why this happens and how our brains follow exactly what God tells us in Scripture. It turns out, we have more control over our thinking than we realize! Thank you for being here today. Now, let's dive into the conversation!  You can connect with Risa Haasbroek through Facebook, Instagram, and her website!  She also has a YouTube channel.    FAVORITE TAKE-AWAYS: *Our brains were designed for surviving the wilderness, they don't like new things like trying to implement changes to our life: going to the gym, eating healthier, more sleep (some New Year resolutions). The top New Year resolution for Christian women was reading the Bible more. It is perfectly normal to struggle in adapting to new changes.  *Our brains have set neuropathways, meaning our old habits are easiest to fall back on and developing new habits, new brain pathways, is not easy. But you CAN do it!  *The Bible, God's word, is full of things we also find in science! Like the power we have over our own thinking.  REMEMBER: *You need to be prepared for the resistance and the challenge. You also have to give yourself patience and grace.  *Remember the WHY behind your resolution. Example: "I want to read my Bible more" but you're struggling... then remember why you want to do that, reading your Bible more. "Because I want to be closer to God" and lean into that why. Let this WHY motivate you!  *Don't quit just because you make a mistake! Episode 8 Let's talk about the brain… with a neuroscientist! Dr Hayley Nelson Getting a mini course on the brain, neuroscience and how the mind works! WHAT is neuroscience? The study of neurons! Neurons are components in the body specialized in communication with each other and other cells to receive and transmit information and create an electrical signal to a chemical signal. Over 100 billions of this in our brain… 10 k connections. There are many types of fields in Neuroscience. What are neuropathways and neuroplacity? How our brain and nervous system is allowed to grow and change. Neuropathways are connections that create a stimulation and action which lead to cause and effect or habits. Neuroplacity is our brain being able to change and be shaped. Exercise creates a chemical that is essential in change behaviour in connections. New experiences and creating change helps the brain be more pliable and addable. Parts of the brain play a role, 2 Halves which synch to the spinal cord. Your brain controls everything. Sensory, Motor, Visual, etc areas that govern certain actions and behaviours. Key Ares Pre Frontal Cortex, What sets us apart from others. Amygdala and Hippocampus, is there to recognize stimulus and danger and perceived threats AND how trauma, overthinking and anxiety are woven into that. How can you change the brain? How did the pandemic change our brain? IS depression and Mood disorders genetic? How does that show up? What are some innate behaviours we have? Sucking, Yawning and Grasping! How are emotions made? What emotions are innate? How do substances affect the brain? How do we become addicted to things? Dr. Hayley Nelson is a neuroscientist, tenured psychology professor, international speaker and founder of The Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience where she is passionate about making neuroscience approachable. She earned her PhD in Psychological and Brain Sciences from The Johns Hopkins University and has over 20 years of teaching experience with students from diverse backgrounds. She also has several peer-reviewed research publications and previous research and faculty appointments with The National Institutes of Health, The Johns Hopkins University, and The University of Pennsylvania. By creating Certification Programs with the Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience, Dr. Hayley combined her knowledge of the human mind and brain health with her passion for education, teaching, and consulting to truly make neuroscience accessible and approachable. She loves working with life coaches, wellness professionals, therapists and counselors who are ready to stand apart and show up as true leaders in their field. By earning their certification in Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience, her students learn easy-to-swallow knowledge of how the brain works in real-life situations and are armed with an education in a subject they can use literally every single day. Episode 18Have you ever tuned in  to your inner roommate? You know, the one up there who resides in the mind and is the negative Nancy to your life, the one who critics, judges, and possibly puts you down?  We all have an inner critic and they're actually not bad at all. I believe our inner critic is connected to our stress response, or the sympathetic nervous system, and designed to keep us safe. But what happens when our inner critic gets too loud and starts leading the way? Similar to how we can accumulate stress, depleting our inner resources and  wrecking havoc on the body, our mind also begins to run wild with stress and worry, creating a negative environment within the mind that lowers self esteem and diminishes self confidence. In this episode we explore 3 simple yet powerful tools to quiet the inner critic, create a more pleasant environment in the mind, boost self confidence and self esteem, and positively retire the neurpathways in our brain so that we become the most motivating inner coach. NotesMel Robbins Book: The High Five HabitListen to the 5 minute guided mantra meditation Calm + Peace: www.daphnelyon.com/calm-meditation The Practice Membership - Join for a free week trial: www.daphnelyon.com/membership Connect on Instagram @thepractice

It is not Palm Reading. It is a scientifically validated process. The lines and markings on your hands correlate to the neuropathways in your brain. The core of your purpose are found on your fingerprints. Although the lines on your hands change, your fingerprints are formed in utero and never change. Your hand analysis will tell you who you are and why you are here (how you are to make a difference in the world). It also reveals your blind spots. There are 'Master Paths' and 'Student Paths' in your markings. They indicated how you feel and operate when you are living into your purpose and when you are not (the 'student' path). Jayne finds that when people have this kind of confidence about their purpose, they can more easily align with joy and ease. It doesn't matter where you are or what age you are, scientific hand analysis works! =========If you'd like a Scientific Hand Analysis with Jayne, please visit her website and tell her you listened to her on The Liberated Life for a special discount. Find Jayne: https://www.purposewhisperer.com/Find Robin: www.QuittingCulture.com

Individuals engage in different acting out behaviors for different reasons to achieve different effects, and when the behaviors and substances begin to be combined, there are nearly endless variations of pattern that follow! Along the way, he re-emphasizes that the specific behavior is secondary to the reason the person does it. Furthermore, if we want to be a helpful presence for a person caught in addiction, we must be able to suspend our own judgments. Did you know we can manually adjust our brain chemistry leading to increased happiness (and health)?  Did you know that in countries like Zambia, people with a 4th and 5th-grade education are being taught to successfully administer mental health treatment to local populations?  What can we learn from that effort to improve access and cost to much needed mental health care services in the United States? We discuss all of this, and how these learnings can be applied to help us manage our mental health during physical distancing due to COVID-19 with Dr. Laura Murray.  Dr. Murray is a Senior Scientist at Johns Hopkins school of Public Health in the Department of Mental Health and International Health.  She is a clinical psychologist by training. Dr. Murray’s recent Op-Ed in the Baltimore Sun: “Coronavirus stressing you out? Here’s how to cope (March 2020) You can connect with and learn more about Dr. Laura Murray here: Dr. Murray’s  Johns Hopkins Profile, LinkedIn   HERE ARE MY NOTES FROM THE CONVERSATION: What are the mental health impacts of being isolated?  Here are some of the ways that isolation and loneliness can impact us.  Being alone can make us feel these things and experience these things so we need to be aware. Isolation can make us: Fearful, worried, sleep and eat erratically, strain relationships, shorten our temper, cause suicidal ideation, increase substance abuse, and intense feelings of sadness, depression or anxiety. If you are experiencing any of these things during this time, then you are not abnormal, you are not alone, and there are things you can do to manage your mental health and improve your experience during isolation. How can someone manage the impact of isolation during social distancing? Dr. Murray suggested some ways we can manage our mental health during COVID-19 induced isolation and distancing including: Connect with others – finding ways to do this that works for you.  Even seeing someone’s face from 6 feet away can make a big difference with how we feel Authentic interaction – seek these interactions even if remotely Humor – as they say, laughter can be the best medicine Sleep schedule – consistent rest is very important to managing our mental health Activities that bring you joy or pleasure – this is up to you to define Limiting media exposure – I can only take so much cable news Internal narratives matter – what’s trending in our internal narrative? Dr. Murray explains that our thoughts matter.  The more we think to ourselves “this is bad” or “my family will get sick” then our behavior and emotions follow those thoughts. How does this work? When we have negative thoughts such as “a lot of people are going to die” then a chemical reaction begins in our brain (within the amygdala) that triggers an emotional reaction.  That emotional reaction triggers a physical reaction (heart rate increase, discomfort, gastro-intestinal symptoms, etc.) and these physical reactions lead to anger, agitation etc. Dr. Murray explains that manually retraining the brain, and what follows from those efforts, is the coolest thing she’s learned in psychology. Neuropathways in our brain can change because of our behavior Positively affirming ourselves, or exercising have more of an impact on our brain chemistry than most people realize.  Just a brief walk, or a kind word to yourself can release chemicals like dopamine or endorphins in the brain which impact the brain’s chemistry.  That brain chemistry impacts your emotions.  Not only is your brain getting more of chemicals that make you happy, you are also forcing your brain to get rid of chemicals that make you feel bad. Even though some things like meditating, positive affirmations, brief exercise, etc. may seem like they aren’t doing any good, the impact really adds up over time Change your vocabulary, even if you don’t believe it, and your brain will change. In Dr. Murray’s research, she’s found that we create pathways in our brain and those pathways can be trained.  They become “engrained” so to speak and when certain things happen in our life we naturally or automatically react based on those engrained neuropathways.  We have the ability to manually adjust those pathways and change our emotions and behavior. This time we are in will produce MH struggle and addiction Dr. Murray explained that people are coping with substances.  She believes we will see an upswing in addiction when we emerge from this period of isolation.  A lot of us deal with stress and anxiety via drugs, alcohol, chemicals, process addiction, sex, pornography, etc. How do we know if we are developing an addiction problem during this time of isolation? Whether you have had an addiction problem or not in the past, one of the best ways to think about it or manage it is just to monitor it.  Do you have a problem?  Just track it, write it down, a lot of people don’t realize how much they are starting to drink until they write it down. The first step is awareness. During this time of COVID-19 this is a great time to reach out to people.    It’s a great excuse to check-in since we are all in this isolation period.  So, check in and ask people, ask your friends, neighbors, family members, etc.  How much are you drinking?  Are you ok Laura spends a lot of her time working in low- and middle-income countries where mental health access is very low.  She started her career researching HIV and the impacts of HIV and trauma on children in countries like Zambia.  She spent a lot of time studying kids who were HIV positive and have been sexually abused and how they have been able to take their life in a positive direction. The challenge is that the ability to access treatment is still quite limited in Zambia, but they have found ways to train “lay providers” to provide basic mental health care, education and encouragement.  These are people who often have a 4th or 5th grade education.  What can we apply from that learning in the U.S.?  A lot of people may not require full evidenced-based mental health treatment.  Many people just need more skills or tools in their toolbox when it comes to happiness and re-training these neuropathways in our brains.  Many people who are not happy at work, or in a marriage, or social relationships are going to carry that unhappiness into other areas of their lives.  There are relatively simple skills and tools that can be applied to find happiness and prevent one negative aspect of your life from dominating all of your life with unhappiness.   While there is certainly a place for highly trained clinicians to help a lot of people, there is room for less skilled or trained individuals to help other humans learn to be happy.  This is what their work in Zambia is showing. "Neuropathways (i.e. ruts) will form overtime in our brains, due to negative experiences in life. But when we saturate in the presence and in the Word, we are changed. (II Corinthians 3:18). Godly, positive neuropathways can replace the old ones and we can obtain a wholesome mental attitude, leading to an overcoming life." -Pastor Cliff Reynolds

Finance & Fury Podcast
We're addicted to easy hits of dopamine, and it's impacting our ability to build wealth

Today we will talk about the fundamental principle of being wealthy. It’s very basic, and, if you get it right, you will start to accumulate wealth…which is the whole concept behind actually being wealthy. You don’t get dumped with a truckload of cash and all of a sudden find yourself wealthy – those who are wealthy tend to have accumulated their wealth over their lifetimes.   It’s about keeping more of your money, and investing it to grow over time.   The big dream: Have millions of dollars and being able to purchase anything. This revolves around spending money You need the money in the first place to do this though   I want to talk about the allure of getting everything that we want in one go – the get rich quick schemes Lottery winners, or massive inheritances – do they never have money worries again? Well, it’s been shown that they do. And this goes back to the fundamental principle of spending more than is sustainable. The money is going to run out pretty quickly if you don’t have any discipline. People develop bad spending behaviours, so it doesn’t take long to go through $100m This extreme example is important – the mobility of wealth is massive – the “1%” is a very mobile group, people move in and out of it throughout their lives – Generational wealth All have the same sort of decline – 3 generations on average to spend through wealth   We all spend money and it goes hand in hand with modern life Basic needs (housing, food, transportation, etc.) Modern day – Easier to spend money than ever before. There is additional choice. Credit availability – CCs, Loans, cashless Online shopping – Amazon, delivery with minimal effort Advertising – constant stimulus, triggering of dopamine Why we spend money? For things we need For things that we want! Gives us some other gain – there’s a dopamine release The hedonic treadmill, and always needing to increase how much you’re spending to get the same feeling What we could be doing with our money – Opportunity cost Short term – What could you have done with the money spent? Long term – Is it the best thing now, or could I buy something bigger later How we grew up – Dopamine addicts Neuropathways are developing under constant dopamine stimulation Phones, Internet, Facebook, TV on demand It’s then very hard to find something to fill the dopamine gap when a lot of effort hasn’t previously been put in to doing this – Spending money easily fills this   How we decide – For financial spending It’s usually not cold and calculated It’s really, “Pain versus gain” – ‘cost v benefit’ mental accounting – use pain and gain constructs Pain – Will spending this money hurt in a certain period of time If you focus on the pain of not having the money, less likely to spend Gain – Good feeling and anticipated future benefit Anticipation – excitement for imagined future benefit Unpredictability – When we work for something and there is no guarantee of reward It is hard to qualify spending money as a ‘pain’ The pain is not realised now – for example with a Credit card with a bill which is delayed for 60 days. The pain is in the opportunity cost, which is hard to qualify. You don’t conceptualise the pain of opportunity cost with any immediacy Hyperbolic discounting Time – the longer the time delay, the less we tend to value the gains Would you rather receive: $100 today, or $110 in a week? $100 in a year, or $110 in a year and one week? In the world of instant gratification there is easy reward with no anticipation or uncertainty – it’s important to find meaning in delaying spending, but it gets harder and harder Spending money wont help in the long term – hedonic treadmill   The Imagined Future Benefit problem – The Gain has been experienced before you finish Dopamine’s release changes based on two factors – Many people think that dopamine is released when the brain receives a reward, but dopamine is actually released in anticipation of a reward.  It’s done to keep motivating us to work towards what we are trying to achieve. You don’t actually get much of a release when you finish working on the project – not sustainable long term to only have one goal, or none. That makes it release while we are doing the activity Anticipation – excitement for imagined future benefit Unpredictability – When we work for something and there is no guarantee of reward   Human behaviour – How do we act when we have something we didn’t work for (or earn?) It won’t make you happy – without the ongoing work for something, dopamine release isn’t going to be as great Working on the goal is what provides longer sustained releases of dopamine My experience – Sanding a deck – if I had paid someone to do it then there wouldn’t be that feeling of achievement Beyond dopamine Serotonin Status – our position in a hierarchy - spending money on nicer cars, suits, watches – Trying to live up to an ideal image. This doesn’t actually increase serotonin Fake it till you make it doesn’t work here if your brain knows that you are just flashy/showy with no substance The belief (anticipation) that spending money will give dopamine and serotonin becomes a dangerous cycle Without fulfilment – Just have to keep spending to keep up these feelings Also – Turning to easy releases of dopamine - The wrong way to do it – Easy releases of dopamine Gambling – The thrill – Uncertainty and anticipation are strong here. But it’s not sustainable. You’re only losing money to get dopamine. Risky investment – Get rich quick schemes – Often just lose money   The right way to do it - Best way to get rich slow   Simply, spend less than what you earn. You spend money on things to get the same feeling that saving money can actually achieve and that working towards a goal can give you. This has a lot to do with investing as well, if your goal is to accumulate wealth to do something meaningful, why can’t this give the same dopamine release? Money is a tool – spending can give you a dopamine release and so can saving towards a target – but difference is that it is delayed   Stable and slow – More meaningful Sounds cliché and has been repeated 100 times (which maybe means it’s important then?) Remember what the end game is – Being self-reliant and having meaning in your life Dream, vision, purpose Nietzsche – ‘To live is to suffer, to survive is to find some meaning in the suffering’ If you hit your goal too soon, you lose purpose. This is why big goals can be good…as long as they don’t dishearten you, they always give you something to work on. If the goal is superficial (e.g. spending) then you end up resenting work as while it provides the ability to spend – it gets in the way of what you want to spend money on   The take away It’s all about choice – and this is why I like free markets. We have the choice to save and invest – Or chose to spend     This is why I don’t by the BS that it is too hard so you should never try Anything that is worthwhile is hard – and that’s good – working to get something that is easy won’t give the same level of satisfaction as something that’s difficult. Even the complaints we have really aren’t bad – I can’t afford a house – At least you can buy one in the future. You get to choose. And it’s all these choices that you make in life which lead into how well you actually achieve the things you want – job v career v purpose Most of the world isn’t so lucky, though there are some people in Australia are doing it tough Those who are ‘privileged’ are simply those that understand the concept of money   Thanks for listening!
