A new survey has revealed that Queensland nurses have been ditching night shifts because of verbal, physical and sexual harassment when they are walking to and from their cars after hours. The President of the Nurses Professional Association of Queensland, Kara Thomas, told Peter Fegan on 4BC Breakfast, "a lot of them are having to park a long way from the hospital and walk quite some distances in the dark where there is no CCTV cameras." "It's very poor lighting, we're in the midst of a crime crisis and they're telling us stories about being threatened physically, verbally abused, nurses have been egged and run back into the hospital." There is an alleyway near Ipswich hospital that our members tell us has been dubbed 'rape alley',' she said.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

People have been participating in mass rallies in India seeking justice for a young medical trainee who was raped and murdered in a hospital. It's put a spotlight once again on women's safety at work - particularly for those women doing night shifts. There are laws to protect women from sexual harassment in the workplace, but campaigners say it can be slow to get justice. So what more can be done to improve women's safety and encourage female participation in the workforce? We talk to some night shift workers about their experiences.(Picture: Activists and medical professionals shout slogans during a protest march to condemn the rape and murder of a doctor. Between the daily agony of long hours spent at an uncomfortable desk, and an unrelenting schedule, having a demanding job can often interfere with your exercise habits — if not stop them dead in their tracks. And that's a problem, because when you're stressed out and sedentary, exercise is one of the best things you can do to manage anxiety and ensure that you stay physically active through all that sitting. When it comes to fitness, it often seems like working people have two options: 1) waking up early enough to go work out, or 2) hoping that they have enough energy to work out in the evening. While hopping over to the gym in the middle of the day sounds like a nice solution, most of us don't have that luxury on a daily basis. And keeping a set of weights or foam roller stashed under your desk may not be in sync with your office culture. Everyone's work life is different, so what works for you and your schedule or job demands might not work for the next person. So how do you fit exercise in when working full time? And what is the impact of remote work on staying fit and healthy? This is 100% doable. But it takes strict time management and a training program designed to pack as much productivity as possible into short periods of time. My online client, Langston Menezes, who was born and raised in Dubai, has always been an active person who also happens to be a foodie. He began working out in the gym with his brother when he was 20 years old. His brother became an inspiration to him when it came to working out and getting in shape. However, as a gourmand, he did not place a high value on appropriate nutrition. His brother soon referred him to bodybuilding.com. Langston began the 60-day program with me. He continued to train, but he had no specific goals in mind. His efforts yielded little to no results because he lacked goals and a sufficient diet. He subsequently moved to the United States, studied, and started a new job in 2019. He quit training and concentrated on his job. This provided him with a valid reason to stop exercising and he gained a lot of weight. He opted to workout at home when the pandemic hit in 2020. He improved his training consistency, but he continued to have a poor eating pattern. He then decided to focus on losing weight and opted to work with me on a one-on-one basis. Langston had a lot of obstacles during the program. He managed to overcome them, eat right, and get enough sleep. Working and exercising at home transformed him physically and mentally—he became a better version of himself. By being consistent with eating the right foods at home and working out regularly despite the challenges at home brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, Langston lost weight and gained lean muscle mass. He believed investing in himself was the right choice he made. Check out this episode with Langston Menezes as he talks about his extraordinary weight reduction journey and how he overcame obstacles while working 12-hour night shifts. ---------------- Follow me on Instagram and feel free to DM about 1-1 online training @krisgethin Do you need elite sports supplements you can trust to help you achieve your goals in the gym and in life? There's nothing new about the desire to control our dreams. After all, these highly subjective, intense, yet easily forgettable nighttime experiences have offered artists and spiritual leaders insights to their respective professions throughout history. In the April issue, Michael W. Clune writes about the profound insights offered by the Dormio, a device that offers users the opportunity to influence the content of their dreams. Its lead designer, Adam Haar Horowitz, hopes to create a community of dreamers Clune joins web editor Violet Lucca for a discussion of the relationship between dreams and the brain's capacity for creativity and feeling, as well as how embracing subjectivity can open new ground for dream research. Along the way, they touch on psychedelics and addiction and imagine the possibilities for communities and rituals built around “dream incubation” as well as the lasting effects of Clune's experiences with this new kind of dream machine.

Recently, Suzanne wrote in to ask if working a night shift may negatively impact her chances of becoming pregnant via embryo transfer. Here's what she has to say, "I'm wondering if you think that it's very bad to work night shifts when trying to get pregnant with an embryo transfer. I also work some days and evenings, but mostly nights. And I've heard different things about it. If it's good or not, what do you think about it? Can it really disturb implantation and cause miscarriage?" And my answer for Suzanne is that it depends on many things, including how long you've been trying and your age. You can tune in for my full answer, along with answers to other listener questions. To hear the rest of my answer, and the answer to other listener questions, tune in to today's episode. Sleep is essential for all of us and a good sleep cycle is key part of health. Regular poor sleep puts you at risk of serious medical conditions, including obesity, heart disease and diabetes as well as a shortened life expectancy. A poor sleep pattern is very common in shift-workers like healthcare professionals.Joining me this week to talk about how crucial sleep is to our physical and mental health and how shift-work can impact junior doctors as well as some sound advice for healthcare professionals who undertake night shifts is Dr Mike Farquhar, a consultant in children's sleep medicine at London's Evelina Children's Hospital. Welcome to another Q&A episode! Listen in as I answer some of your questions and give tips on how to stay healthy despite working night shifts. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode63. Topics Discussed in this Episode: My thoughts on breast implants and autoimmunity What essential oils to use to create wasp and mosquito repellents How to deal with adult acne Tips on how to stay healthy despite working night shifts Key Takeaways: There is definitely toxicity in silicon and saline implants, and more women who have had breast implants are now choosing to take them out because they have been causing so much inflammation and pain. After doing so, these women are reported to experience a better quality of life and health. There could be a lot of reasons as to why you have autoimmunity. It could be heavy metal toxicity, environmental exposure, and toxicity from implants among other things. How to make a DIY bug repellant: In a small spray bottle, put 3 to 6 drops each of clove + lemongrass + geranium, and top it off with a small amount of water. Fill a 2 to 3-ounce bottle, fill it with two-thirds of water, and add about 15 drops each of lavender + lemongrass + peppermint. The biggest factors that contribute to inflammation are dairy, gluten, and sugar. When your circadian rhythm is disrupted, you can end up craving more sugar and wanting to eat more because it can impact our insulin and cortisol levels. Action Steps: Pop a vitamin B1 before you go to where there are mosquitoes. There’s something in the B1 that gives off this aroma from your skin that deters them from biting you. If you’re dealing with adult acne, eat anti-inflammatory foods and avoid dairy, gluten, and sugar. If you’re working night shifts, make sure to schedule your sleep. Use blackout blinds and blue light blocking glasses. Support your gut health by eating clean whole foods. Incorporate a lot of relaxation and meditation in your daily life. Spend some time under the sun and get vitamin D in. Samantha said: “Your wellbeing and our self-care has to go up to the next level when you are working a night shift because you really are flipping your circadian rhythm and it’s really unnatural for your body to be in that phase” “Even though you may not have physical stressors going on in your life or psychological stressors going on in your life, the fact that you’re just working night shifts and you are up during the wee hours of the night, it is a stressor to the body.” Thanks for listening! Sleep can be super confusing. I get lots of questions about it and have my own too...for example: Are there healthy substitutes for sunlight? What does it exactly mean to be a fast vs. a slow caffeine metabolizer? What's the ideal nap length? How can you limit the damage from a night shift? What's the ideal sleeping position? Should you use an alarm? My guest on today's podcast is Shawn Stevenson just wrote the new book "", and today we dig into plenty of detail on the topics he covers in this book, which I highly recommend as a comprehensive sleep resource. Shawn is a graduate of The University of Missouri - St. Louis, where he studied business, biology and kinesiology, and went on to be the founder of Advanced Integrative Health Alliance, a company that provides wellness services for individuals and organizations worldwide. Shawn has been featured in Entrepreneur magazine, Men's Health magazine, ESPN, FOX News, and many other media outlets. He is also a frequent keynote speaker for numerous organizations, universities, and conferences - all with outstanding reviews. To learn more about Shawn visit . During our discussion, you'll discover: -How using natural medicine to rebuild his spine bones made Shawn want to write a book about sleep... -How Shawn and I differ in the ways we quantify and track sleep... -Whether there are sunlight substitutes you can use instead of sunlight... -How to measure your UVA vs. UVB exposure... -The difference between blue-light boxes, in-ear photo therapy and intranasal therapy... -How many sleep cycles you should get each night... -What Shawn thinks about the effect of caffeine on sleep if one is genetically tested and found to be a fast caffeine metabolizer... -Shawn's top tips for people who have to work graveyard or night shifts to avoid the metabolic issues that can arise with circadian rhythm disruptions... -The surprising link between gut bacteria and sleep... -Whether morning vs. evening exercise is best for sleep... -Shawn's thoughts on optimal nap time, and if you really need to limit your naps to less than 60 minutes... -What the ideal sleeping position is... -Why you should use black-out curtains and sleep masks even though your ancestors or "caveman" didn't... -The best type of alarm to use to optimize your sleep cycles... -And much more!
