She is the author of The Scout Mindset: Why Some People See Things Clearly and Others Don't. Notes: What is the scout mindset? “The motivation to see things as they are, not as you wish them to be.” The Scout Mindset allows you to recognize when you were wrong, to seek out your blind spots, to test your assumptions and change course. It's what prompts you to honestly ask yourself questions like “Was I at fault in that argument?” or “Is this risk really worth it?” As the physicist Richard Feynman said: “The first rule is that you must not fool yourself – and you are the easiest person to fool.” The three prongs: Realize that trust isn't in conflict with your other goals Learn tools that make it easier to see clearly Appreciate the emotional rewards of scout mindset She closes her TED talk with this quote from Antoine de Saint-Exupery: "If you want to build a ship, don't drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work, and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea." "The biggest bottleneck is not knowledge. It's motivation. You need to cultivate the motivation to see things clearly." “Julia Galef is an intellectual leader of the rationalist community, and in The Scout Mindset you will find an engaging, clearly written distillation of her very important accumulated wisdom on these topics.” -- Tyler Cowen We should assume that we are wrong. We need to build the skill to change our mind. "Our goal should be to be less wrong over time." How do you work on this? The key principle is the way you think about being wrong. "Don't accept the premise that being wrong means you screwed up." Jeff Bezos left his job on Wall Street to start Amazon and acknowledged the uncertainty. He estimated that his idea had about a 30% chance to work. The Scout versus Soldier mindset: A lot of times, humans are in a soldier mindset - "Belief was strong, unshakeable, opposed argument. A soldier is having to defend." Scout mindset - survey and see what's true. Form an accurate map. Practical application: Be cognizant how you seek out and respond to criticism. Don't ask leading questions. Recognize the tendency to describe the conflict accurately. Also... Not all arguments are worth having. Show signals of good faith. Distinguish between two kinds of confidence: Social - Poised, charismatic, relaxed body language, be worth listening to Epistemic - How much certainty that you have in your views Persuade while still expressing uncertainty: "I think there's a 70% chance this won't work." Lyndon Johnson - Need to understand why someone wouldn't agree with you... We are all the sum of our experiences... Approach people, places, and things with curiosity Life/Career advice: You're creating a brand - Be conscious of the type of people you're attracting. Work to attract those that make you a better version of yourself. Make the choice to attract people who like intellectual honesty like Vitalik Buterin (founder of Ethereum)

An awesome little oration on what my current jobs are and what the distractions are that are keeping me from them. Also a nice little bit on the meaning of objective vs subjective; including examples. And “my time for glory may come” but said in a different way. But I have been adding other jobs to the list:Driving traffic to my podcastCreating content on the social media platforms to support my publishing content.Or too grow my subscriber base.I have been thinking my other jobs have been to refine my FB profile, my IG profile. To convert my podcast content to other platforms (repurpose the content)… in the vein of likes, looks subscribers, downloads, friends… Unfortunately none of that is in my current job description… But I want it to be! I had gotten distracted by shiny egoic objects. The time to grow my following, to refine my profiles, to refine my social media strategies are coming. But those are steps ahead. Fortuitously I have publishing down; now quality is subjective. Defining objective v subjective measures. One of the examples used to define, If I was compelled to get the new iPhone I would get the 12 Mini. Another thing that became abundantly clear is the reason they want us to publish consistently on a specific platform is because it has a long shelf life. The summit will drive traffic on a much bigger scale than the distracted time that I put onto the social media. Notes What is fear? How can this emotion that’s usually a figment of our own or society’s imagination create such havoc in our lives? Why are we driven by fear to do or not to do something? Eleni recounts how a harrowing airplane flight motivated her to change her life path. Is it fear that drives us to treat symptoms without looking at the cause of a pain? Have you noticed how your brain wants to quickly make up a story around fear, but we have the power to move and shift that energy? If someone suggests that we ought to be experiencing or feeling something because of their belief system or mass consciousness, our energy can lower if we identify with or react to the suggestion. Here’s where we practice self-observation, curiosity and neutrality. When we’re experiencing joy, fear cannot exist. Fear is so prevalent in our society that we sometimes can’t discern that what we’re feeling is fear. Sometimes fear is used intentionally to manipulate society-at-large, such as the antics of the company Cambridge Analytica. Today I bring back Elijah Whaley, Influencer and CMO of influencer marketing PARKLU to talk about the new sponsored post regulations on Xiaohongshu or Red, Little Red Book. When these rules were announced around 2 weeks ago, they caused an uproar in the China KOL community and in this episode we’ll tell you why. Xiaohongshu has since then announced that they will issue another press release on May 27th with additional explanations and modifications and then the app itself will be updated on June 10th. Elijah also shares that many of their clients have paused their campaigns on Xiaohongshu as they are waiting to see what finally happens and many KOLs have temporarily stopped accepting sponsored posts as they are worried about the repercussions from the platform. Elijah and I have been big proponents of Xiaohongshu, and while we understand where these new rules are coming from, we both agree it was a poor decision and are a bit worried about the long term effect they could have. I will be recording another episode in late June to give an update on the situation.
