"We put ourselves on the line to help other people accomplish their dreams, and that was pretty freaking awesome." It's another Throwback Thursday, and this time we're going back to December 2019 for one of my all-time favorite episodes. At the 2019 California International Marathon (CIM), 72 women ran faster than 2 hours 45 minutes, officially qualifying to run the 2020 Olympic Trials in the marathon. Leading several dozen of those women were Menso de Jong, Chris Stehula, and Ken Rakestraw — the official sub-2:45 pace group leaders. None of them had ever run a 2:45 marathon before. This is their story. (This is such a lovely, wholesome conversation with three men who took their roles at CIM that year incredibly seriously, and who had the utmost respect for the women in the field chasing their biggest goals. What Happens When AI Starts Protecting the Power Grid Before Humans Even Spot the Problem? President Geoffrey S. Mearns serves as the 17th president of Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. This 21,000 student institution competes at the NCAA Division 1 FBS level in the Mid American Conference. In addition to its' acclaimed programs in the Estopinal College of Architecture & Planning, the College of Communication Information & Media, Honors College, and the Miller College of Business - the Ball State's Teachers' College is a world-renowned leader in teacher education. After joining the University in May 2017, President Mearns helped to develop a new strategic plan. Destination 2040: Our Flight Path established a long-range vision for the University that sets priorities across five key areas: undergraduate excellence, graduate education and lifetime learning, community engagement and impact, scholarship and societal impact, and inclusiveness and institutional excellence. A refreshed version of the plan, which upholds these five long-term goals, was approved by members of the Board of Trustees in 2025. During his tenure, President Mearns has pursued initiatives that have sustained and expanded the University's enrollment, despite the adverse impact of the pandemic, and increased alumni engagement and fundraising. President Mearns has also strengthened the University's relationship with the community, most notably through its innovative partnership with Muncie Community Schools and its ambitious plan to revitalize The Village through a $200 million mixed use academic village redevelopment. A former elite collegiate distance running athlete and distinguished attorney and federal prosecutor, he previously served as President at Northern Kentucky University and Provost/Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Cleveland State University. "I was honestly terrified of [pregnancy]. I feel like whenever I looked around in the sport, I didn't see it. And if someone did get pregnant, it seemed like they disappeared. And if they came back, it seemed like it was against all odds," Molly Huddle shares with the Lane 9 Podcast. Today on the podcast, I'm talking with Nathan Martin, fresh off his incredible win at the Los Angeles Marathon. Madonna Boclair Hanna is a sprinter proving that speed has no expiration date. Over the past 15 years, she has competed in nine Washington State Senior Games and set a Women's 70–74 50-meter state record in 2024, a mark that had stood for 15 years. She has competed in five National Senior Games, winning her first national gold in the 4x100-meter relay at age 70. Her journey to the track began at age 57, earned national attention through “The Ethel” newsletter and appearances on the Today show, and even inspired her nickname, “The Fast Fashionista.” After a devastating Achilles rupture at 61 and the loss of her husband and first coach, she defied the odds, returned to competition at 64, and continues to train with former Olympic Trials hopeful Marcus Chambers. Clayton Young fell early at the Marathon World Championships, and still finished as the top American. He also ran 2:07:04 at Boston (the fastest marathon of his life), and somehow it still felt like there was more in the tank. Since 2024, he's been everywhere that matters: including 2nd in the U.S. Olympic Trials, 9th at the Paris Olympics, 7th in New York, 7th in Boston, and 9th in Tokyo. This man is stacking top-10 finishes on the biggest stages in the sport of marathon running. And now, with Tokyo, Boston, and Berlin lined up in 2026, he's not just racing majors, it appears that he's chasing history as he closes in on becoming a Six Star finisher.Clayton was the 2019 NCAA Champion in the 10,000m while at BYU. Becs Gentry isn't just an influential Peloton instructor. She's a 2:32 marathoner, a former British Olympic Trials fourth-place finisher, the first female non-elite at the 2019 NYC Marathon, and now the newest Global Brand Ambassador for HOKA.And that's not even mentioning her incredible second-place finish in The Great World Race in 2024: she ran 7 marathons, on 7 continents, in 7 days, setting a world record for the fastest time to start seven marathons across seven continents, and then turned around and kept training like it was just another chapter.Prior to that in 2021 she competed in the British Olympic Marathon Trials, finishing 4th with a personal best of 2:32:0. Since his last appearance on the show, Coach Pat Henner has continued shaping distance culture at the highest levels of the sport while playing a quiet but meaningful role in one of the most remarkable middle-distance arcs in recent American history.After joining the University of Georgia in June 2022, Henner coached standout athlete Will Sumner to an NCAA title and helped elevate the Bulldogs' distance program before departing in June 2024. He was succeeded by Adam Tribble.At the same time, Henner has served as a high-performance consultant for Olympic middle-distance star Hobbs Kessler, helping to shape one of the sport's most historic breakthroughs: Kessler qualifying for the Paris Olympics in both the 800m and 1500m at the U.S. Olympic Trials.More recently, Kessler shattered Kenenisa Bekele's long-standing indoor 2000m world record, running 4:48.79 in January 2026.Henner's coaching roots stretch from Blacksburg High School to James Madison, Georgetown (where he led the women to an NCAA cross country title in 2011), USC, Arizona State, and most recently the University of Georgia, where he served as Head Cross Country Coach and Assistant Coach for the distance events from 2022–2024.But this episode isn't a résumé tour. Olivia Markezich joins me on the podcast to talk steeplechase, the jump from college to pro running, and what it's been like joining the On Athletics Club in Boulder.
