Where he has held the titles of coach, official, USA Weightlifting and International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) board member, national and international meet director. Gattone started his career as a graduate assistant for strength at the University of Kansas. After KU Coach Gattone was offered a position at Great Plains Sports Science Training Center, a nonprofit gym working with at-risk youth teaching Olympic Sports. While there he hosted the 1991 Junior National Championships, the 1992 Olympic Trials, and the 1993 Senior National Championships. Because of his demonstrated experience directing meets, he was brought in as the competition director for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. After the Games, Gattone started working for the Chicago Bulls as an assistant strength and conditioning coach under Al Vermeil. In late 2001, he accepted a position with the U.S. Olympic Committee in Colorado Springs as Manager of Coaching Programs. After two years, he went back to Chicago and opened his own gym for sports performance, including weightlifting. Gattone added on a role as High Performance and Coaching Education Director for USA Weightlifting . In his tenure he ran the 2007 U.S. Nationals and the 2009 Pan-American Championships in Chicago. A native of The Woodlands, Texas, Brynn King is currently a graduate student at Roberts Wesleyan University, competing on the Redhawks track & field team. King was the first-ever NCAA Division II National Champion at RWU, winning the 2024 NCAA indoor pole vault national championship. King did so by breaking her own NCAA Division II indoor pole vault record, clearing 4.65 meters (15-feet, 3 inches) at the NCAA Division II Championships in Pittsburg, Kansas. She has since won two more NCAA National Championships in pole vault, and just set the NCAA women's outdoor pole vault record with a jump of 4.75-meters (15-feet, 7-inches) at the 97th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on March 29. King also competed for the United States Olympic Team in 2024 in Paris, France after clearing a jump of 4.73 meters (15-feet, 6 1/4 inches) on June 30 at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field during the Olympic Trials to catapult from eighth in the standings to finish third and earn a spot on Team USA for the 2024 Paris Olympics. King would go on to finish 22nd in the event in her first Olympic appearance. In this episode, King discusses how she got involved in track & field, how she overcame injuries by surrounding herself with believers who encouraged her off the track, her experience at the Olympic Trials and at the 2024 Paris Olympics, and how the Roberts Wesleyan community has rallied around her over the last year.

Keith is a 5 time Olympic Trials qualifier, has represented the US in 12 international competitions, is an 8 time US champion, and an incredibly nice guy.
Josette Norris Andrews joins the show after setting an incredible new 2025 world standard in the 5,000m at the BU Last Chance meet, clocking a speedy 14:44.80. (Josette's personal best in the 5,000m is an even-faster 14:43.36.)Josette is healthy and feeling like herself again, and it showed with a massive personal best at the Millrose Games in February when she ran a PR of 8:29.77 in the 3,000m.Josette competed for Team USA in both the 2022 and 2024 World Indoor Championships. She was also a member of the 2023 World Indoor team in the 3,000m, but unfortunately injured herself shortly after, which took her out for most of the spring 2024 season.In her two appearances of that year she came in second at the USATF Indoor Champs with a 3,000m time of 9:03.10; she then competed in the Olympic Trials in the 5,000m and came in 11th with a time of 15:26.25.Josette, who is a member of the On Athletics Club out of Boulder Colorado, has additional PRs of 3:59 in the 1,500m and 4:20 in the mile. Sarah Crouch was one of the best American long-distance runners of the 2010's and has transitioned to best-selling novelist. During her collegiate career at Western Washington University, she was an NCAA Division II All-American thirteen times and won the 2011 NCAA Division II National Championship in the 10,000m. In one of her first races as a professional runner, she finished fifth at the U.S. 10 Mile Championships. In 2011, she made her marathon debut in New York and qualified for the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, and in 2012, she qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 10,000m. Sarah finished 7th at the 2014 Chicago Marathon, 9th at 2016, and the top American in 2018 despite have a benign tumor removes from her quad a few weeks before the race. Becca Mann is a writer and athlete. A member of the USA Swimming National Team from 2012 until 2021, Becca is a 2x USA National Champion and was the youngest person ever to place in the Top 10 in 4 events at a single Olympic Trials. She has also represented Team USA at 4 World Championships. Becca initially fell in love with the solitude, power and efficiency that swimming offered but was ultimately motivated by the ability to consistently achieve goals. Whether moving to a more advanced lane, breaking a school record, breaking a state record or becoming a world champion, each small goal led to an even bigger one. No matter how big the goal was, her mindset stayed the same. She maintained the same pre-race routine (as it had worked before) and reminded herself that every meet was the most important meet of her life. After missing her 3rd Olympic team, she decided that if she was going to walk away, she would need to do something that had never been done before. With clear understanding and mastery of her mental strengths and vulnerabilities including OCD, she became the first person to have consecutively swum the triangle between the Hawaiian islands of Maui, Molokai, and Lanai. This life defining experience allowed her to redefine her relationship with swimming and reminded herself that it is supposed to be fun. "It was pressure I put on myself. Because I saw other athletes and I wanted to be part of that, okay, look, I want to prove that they did the right thing supporting me during my pregnancy, and now I'm going to come back for them." Neely Spence Gracey ran professionally for eight years after a lot of success as a collegiate runner in the D2 program at Shippensburg University. She has two kids, has coached hundreds of athletes through her business, Get Running, and ran FOUR marathons in 2024 alone. Adidas pro Josh Hoey joins us fresh off a scorching performance at the Indoor Championships in New York, kicking off his 2025 season in other-wordly fashion.Josh broke his own American Indoor 800m record, winning his first national championship at the 2025 USATF Indoor Championships in Staten Island with a time of 1:43.24. Josh also ran a blazing 1:43.9 in the 800m at the Millrose Games; prior to that he won the 1500m at the New Balance Grand Prix in Boston with a time of 3:33.66, beating Olympian Grant Fisher. In January of this year he set a new American record in the short track 1,000m with a time of 2:14.48–which is the second fastest time in indoor history. Josh finished fourth in the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 800m with a time of 1:44.12. Josh went to Bishop Shanahan High School in Pennsylvania, where he set a U.S. high school national record in the 800m as a senior with a time of 1:47.67.Josh has experienced a lot in his time as a competitive runner, having worked with six coaches over six years. While Josh's dad is his main collaborator when it comes to training, his current work with coach Justin Rinaldi–who leads the Fast8 Track Club–is bearing immediate dividends. Middle-distance star, marathoner, and Brooks runner Jess McClain joins the show for the first time today, with her sights set on an Olympic qualifying time on the track. In February of 2024, Jess came in fourth place at the Olympic Marathon Trials in Orlando with a time of 2:25.46; this was just her third marathon ever. Jess coached herself leading up to the 2024 Olympic Trials, while working full-time in marketing and training without a sponsor. Jess had previously worked with her high school coach, Jeff Messer, after graduating from Stanford, but took a hiatus from competitive running in 2020 when the pandemic hit.Impressively, Jess negotiated her own deal with Brooks after the Olympic Trials, showing savvy both on the track and roads but also in the negotiating room.In high school at Xavier College Prep in Arizona, Jess was a 14-time state champion; four-time Foot Locker finalist; and Gatorade Runner of the Year in track and cross country.Collegiately she ran for Stanford, where was a 7-time All-American, 2-time PAC 12 Champion in the 10,000m; and had an NCAA-leading time in the 5,000m in 2015.Professionally, Jess has held the title of Executive Director of the Johnjay & Rich #LoveUp Foundation, and has worked as a marketing consultant.In today's conversation, Jess goes into her mindset, her 2025 racing schedule, her new coach, and how she's structuring training, what she's learned through the process of returning to running, lessons from the last year, and so much more.Jess always brings so much wisdom to our conversations, and I hope you'll take the time to learn from her successful career. Coach, athlete, mom, author, Sara Slattery comes on the podcast today for the first time! Sara has a diverse and impressive resume, which began in high school when she ran for Mountain Pointe High in Arizona. Sara went to run at the University of Colorado, where she placed 8th at the 2000 NCAA Women's Cross Country championships, becoming the first frosh to win All-American honors at Colorado. She was an 11-time All-American, four-time NCAA champion and was inducted in 2016 as a member of the Colorado Athletics Hall of Fame. She earned her Master's degree in Education at this time. Sara began her 2006 season as a professional runner. It was that year she set PRs in the 5k with a time of 15:08 and the 10k with a time of 31:56. Sara was the Pan American Games Champion in 2007 after recovering from a stress fracture. She also came in fourth at the Olympic Trials in the 5k in 2008.Sara turned her focus to coaching when she became the head coach of the Grand Canyon University cross-country team from 2015-2022. She is one of a few women Division One coaches that has coached both genders.Sara has been busy since making coaching and parenting her priority: she is the Director of Nike Camp Elevate XC Camp in Prescott Arizona; in addition to co-directing the Women's Running Retreat at Civana Resort in Carefree, Arizona with marathoner Sara Hall. Today, she is coaching middle school cross country and track.Outside of her running and coaching, Sara has co-authored the book, How She Did It, with Molly Huddle; she is now in the proposal phase for her second book on pregnancy and running, which she is writing with Molly Huddle and Alysia Montano.In today's conversation, Sara takes me through her findings of studying 50-elite athletes and how they did it, the differences of coaching female athletes, her years in the NCAA and winning four titles, her life as a mom, camp director, coach, and more. “Once I made the Olympic team, it was kind of like a weight was lifted off my shoulders. I finally accomplished that goal. This is weird to say, but I feel like there was a lot less pressure on me for the Olympics than any NCAA race. At NCAA races, I was expected to win. He's coming for it all. 2025 is the year of Hobbs Kessler. Back on the podcast today is 21-year-old mid-distance Olympic star Hobbs Kessler, who is gearing up for the Wanamaker Mile at the Milrose Games in New York City on February 8, 2025. (Hobbs came in 2nd last year at this race with a time of 3:48.66; fellow American star Yared Nuguse took the win.) Hobbs was most recently on the episode right after placing 5th in the 1500m in Paris, running a 3:29.45, in the most stacked and competitive 1500 race of all time. He also ran the 800m in the Olympics, but was eliminated in the semifinals. Hobbs competed for Skyline High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan (the school he attended for academics did not offer competitive sports). It was in high school that Hobbs ran an indoor mile record of 3:57.66. Hobbs then ran a 3:34.36 in the 1500m while still in high school, which was faster than the NCAA record at the time; this catapulted him to his first Olympic Trials in 2021. While Hobbs' father was his high school coach, he delegated most of the planning for his son's training to Michigan coach Ron Warhurst, whom he still trains under as a member of the Very Nice Track Club in Michigan. This 21-year-old is chock full of professionalism and has a laundry list of accomplishments. She's from Jersey, 20 minutes away from the Armory, and I'm, of course, a proud New Yorker who will take any opportunity to boast about the Millrose Games. We talk about the energy and atmosphere of the Millrose Games, but then in addition to that, we reflect on Josette's 2024 season, which wasn't perfect. She dealt with a foot injury, which sidelined her throughout spring and forced her to open up her season at the Olympic Trials, which wasn't easy. She ended up finishing 11th in the 5K, did a couple of races after that, but then really took time to heal in the fall. We get an update on how training's been going, her goals for 2025, and what else she's looking forward to this year. “Even though I wasn't winning every race against the top guys, I still had the confidence that I could win every race if I put it together. I know that if I run my race and run the best that I can, I can win against anybody. I still believe that to this day.” Our guest for today's episode is Daniel Roberts, the Olympic silver medalist in the 110m hurdles. Over the last two years, Daniel has proven that he belongs on the global podium, grabbing bronze at the 2023 World Championships and backing it up with a hard-fought runner-up finish in Paris this past summer. “Ultimately, for that Orlando race, that was more about getting my feet wet a little bit and seeing how the distance felt. Now that I know how it feels, I know that I can push harder.” My guest for today's episode is Amanda Vestri. She's a professional runner for Brooks who trains with Zap Endurance. She's a rising star on the U.S. distance running scene who just made a stunning half marathon debut at the Orlando Half this past weekend with a blazing 1:18:12 performance that puts her at No. 13 on the U.S. all-time women's half marathon list and sets the stage for what could be an incredible road racing career ahead for her. Phil is both a running and race management icon, both in the DC area as well as on the national and international stage. Phil has been the Event Director for the Credit Union Cherry Blossom, the premier springtime running event in Washington, DC, since 1991. He is arguably one of the nation's experts on road race management, and is the editor and publisher of the Road Race Management newsletter, as well as the co-author of Organizing Running Events: The Complete Guide to Staging a Successful Road Race. Before he became a race director, Phil was, and still is, an accomplished distance runner. He has run the Boston Marathon 25 times, the first time in 1975, where he finished in 2:19:58, qualifying him for the 1976 Olympic Trials. He returned in 1977 to finish 15th overall. Phil has run Boston every decade of his life since those first races and most recently ran the 2021 Boston Marathon in his 70's.Phil shares all we need to know about Cherry Blossom and how we can enter.
