But that year, at a party in Lima, Peru, the cajon entered the scene.Spanish guitarist Paco de Lucia and Brazilian percussionist Rubem Dantas attended an event at the Spanish embassy where they saw local musicians playing the cajon, an Afro‑Peruvian box drum that evolved from the wooden crates enslaved people used to make music in the 17th century. Pega Monstro are Portuguese sisters Júlia and Maria Reis - and that's it. Unless you count Rodrigo Rodizio as an actual member. The Reis girls quickly became leaders of the Lisbon rock scene fifteen years ago - especially after founding Cafetra Records and providing an outlet for their friends' groups to release music. But friends don't matter when a masterpiece needs to be made - and in 2015 Pega Monstro left Portugal for London to unleash the Alfarroba. And we thank them for that.

Dream the Size of Freedom: How African Liberation Mobilized New Left Internationalism (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2025) by Dr. R. Joseph Parrott explores how anti-colonial movements in Angola, Mozambique, and Guinea-Bissau reshaped US activist engagement with the Global South from the 1960s through the 1970s and influenced American foreign policy as the Vietnam War drew to a close. These Portuguese African liberation movements, led by nationalists like Eduardo Mondlane and Amílcar Cabral, built global solidarity networks to support their military and social challenges to empire while defending against Western intervention. US activists disillusioned with the Cold War came to see African self-determination as central to global campaigns for racial and economic justice. A broad coalition ranging from Black Power radicals to religious liberals mobilized against the North Atlantic alliance with Portugal. In the process, this grassroots movement helped define a New Left Internationalism that championed decentralized, multiracial organizing and a collaborative vision of US foreign policy to redress historic inequalities between Global North and South. Drawing on more than fifty oral histories and research in government and activist archives on three continents in English, Portuguese, French, and Afrikaans, Dr. Parrott reconstructs the transnational anti-imperial network that injected Global South priorities into US political debates. Popular protests and informational campaigns led to collaborations with legislators eager to constrain the powerful executive branch. In 1976, this grassroots-legislative alliance halted Gerald Ford's anti-communist intervention against the Soviet-backed government of newly independent Angola. This victory of New Left Internationalist ideas anticipated future anti-apartheid and Latin American peace movements while also fueling a conservative revival of Cold War containment. By exploring US engagement with the contested process of African decolonization, Dream the Size of Freedom highlights the origins of two contrasting visions of American foreign policy that defined debates over the country's proper role in the Global South into the 1990s. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. fWotD Episode 3364: Lope Martín Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles.The featured article for Tuesday, 21 July 2026, is Lope Martín.Lope Martín (marooned 21 July 1566) was an Afro-Portuguese maritime pilot who successfully navigated across the Pacific Ocean east–west and then west–east, becoming the first to complete the return voyage from Asia to the Americas. Martín was a free mulatto from Lagos, Portugal, who became a licensed pilot in Spain. He was contracted for Miguel López de Legazpi's expedition from Mexico to the Philippines and was designated the sole pilot of a patache called the San Lucas. Martín and the San Lucas separated from the rest of the fleet after ten days and sailed through the Marshall Islands and the Caroline Islands before arriving at the Philippines in January 1565. Without the rest of the fleet, Martín then embarked upon the return voyage from Asia to the Americas, which had been attempted but never completed; the San Lucas arrived in Mexico in August 1565.In spite of Martín's accomplishments, the Real Audiencia of Mexico soon ordered him to return to the Philippines and appear before Legazpi, who was expected to execute him for having allegedly deserted the rest of his fleet. Martín's ship, the San Jerónimo, departed Mexico in May 1566; recognizing the danger that he faced, Martín led two successive mutinies and took command of the ship. rWotD Episode 3365: First Cevallos expedition Welcome to random Wiki of the Day, your journey through Wikipedia's vast and varied content, one random article at a time.The random article for Tuesday, 21 July 2026, is First Cevallos expedition.The First Cevallos expedition was a series of Spanish military operations in South America during the Fantastic War. Under the command of the governor of Buenos Aires, Pedro de Cevallos, the expedition captured the Portuguese settlement of Colónia do Sacramento and fought off a joint Anglo-Portuguese attempt to recapture it. All military activities in the region concluded with the 1763 Treaty of Paris.In 1762, Spain entered the Seven Years' War on the side of France as part of the Family Compact, motivated in part by diplomatic efforts on the part of the French government. Having been notified months in advance that Spain was planning to enter the conflict and declare war on Portugal, Cevallos launched an expedition against Colónia do Sacramento on 3 September 1762, sailing at the head of an expeditionary fleet from Buenos Aires which carried 2,700 soldiers. The Portuguese authorities in Colónia do Sacramento, already alerted to Cevallos' plans, received reinforcements on 24 September.The expedition arrived near Colónia do Sacramento on 7 September and began to besiege it on 1 October. By 3 November, the settlement capitulated to the Spanish. A month later, a joint Anglo-Portuguese expedition attempted to recapture it, attacking the city walls by bombarding it; after a British warship was destroyed, the Anglo-Portuguese force withdrew. From January to April 1763, Cevallos launched several attacks on Portuguese outposts in the region, capturing the forts of Santa Tereza and San Miguel and occupying the village of Rio Grande. There, Cevallos learned of the Treaty of Paris and concluded his campaign.The expedition's success was received positively in Spain, as the war had gone badly for the Spanish on all other fronts. Under the terms of the Treaty of Paris, Colónia do Sacramento was returned to Portugal, though other outposts captured by Cevallos remained under Spanish control. The Portuguese refused to accept losing control over these outposts, launching several incursions into Spanish-held territory; these actions eventually resulted in an undeclared war breaking out between Spain and Portugal between 1776 and 1777. Várias observações do Universo indicam que a matéria escura é um ingrediente fundamental do cosmos: é cerca de cinco vezes mais abundante do que a matéria normal e contribui para manter as galáxias coesas. Apesar disso, a sua detecção directa é um grande desafio, uma vez que as partículas que a constituem não emitem nem interagem com a luz. A RFI falou com a doutora Isabel Lopes, responsável do grupo Matéria Escura na Universidade de Coimbra. E se alguém lhe dissesse que tudo aquilo que conseguimos ver no Universo representa apenas cerca de 5% do que existe? Os outros 95% seriam, pois, matéria escura. A experiência LUX-ZEPLIN é uma colaboração internacional com 250 cientistas e engenheiros de 37 instituições dos Estados Unidos, Reino Unido, Portugal, Suíça, Austrália e Coreia do Sul. A doutora Isabel Lopes é responsável do grupo Matéria Escura do LIP, o Laboratório de instrumentação e física experimental de partículas, da Universidade de Coimbra. Ela começa por explicar o âmbito da experiência LUX-ZEPLIN. Essa experiência tenta detectar as partículas, hipotéticas porque não sabemos se elas sequer existem, que constituirão a matéria escura. A matéria normal, nós sabemos que é feita de partículas, então nós pomos a hipótese de que a matéria escura também seja feita de partículas. Só que não podem ser estas partículas que nós conhecemos. As propriedades da matéria escura não são de molde a serem compatíveis com as propriedades das partículas que nós conhecemos. De modo que são partículas desconhecidas. E então a experiência LUX-ZEPLIN tem um enorme detector numa antiga mina de ouro, a 1,7 quilómetros de profundidade, a ver se consegue detectar partículas dessa matéria escura que venham da periferia da nossa galáxia. Porque é que o detector está enterrado tão fundo? Estas partículas da matéria escura, nós sabemos que têm pouca probabilidade de interagir com a matéria normal, portanto, com o detector. Ao mesmo tempo, por exemplo, aqui à superfície da Terra, temos imensas outras partículas que vêm da atmosfera, que vêm dos materiais, até nós próprios irradiamos partículas. E, portanto, seria impossível distinguir, no meio de tanta partícula a interagir no detector, aquelas que nós procuramos, que são muito raras. Por isso, vamos lá para baixo, e assim, no nosso detector só vamos ver os sinais das partículas de matéria escura, quando eles aparecerem claro. Para tentar ver estes sinais, utilizam o xénon líquido. O que é e porque é importante nessa pesquisa? Pois são dez toneladas de xénon líquido e como a probabilidade destas partículas interagirem é muito pequena, nós temos que aumentar a massa das nossas partículas normais. São os átomos de xénon líquido, compostos por electrões, protões e neutrões. Por isso temos que ter muitos desses átomos. O xénon é bom porque ele tem um gás inerte, não é perigoso. Portanto daí a escolha do xénon. E é líquido porque sendo líquido é muito mais denso que sendo gás. Densidade significa que temos mais partículas por unidade de volume. E, portanto, conseguimos maior probabilidade de observar as tais partículas da matéria escura. Se uma partícula de matéria escura atravessar o detector, o que acontece exactamente? Vemos um sinal eléctrico, não no xénon directamente. No xénon directamente, essa partícula vai alterar os átomos, vai produzir luz. E essa luz que é uma luz no ultravioleta, vai ser detectada por uns sensores que nós temos no detector, no pote, digamos assim, cheio de xénon líquido. Temos um conjunto de sensores de luz no topo e na base. E então esta luz é detectada por esses sensores. Esses sensores convertem a luz num sinal eléctrico e o que nós vimos é nos computadores um sinal eléctrico. Depois há todo o trabalho de ver se o sinal eléctrico observado é compatível com que nós esperamos da partícula da matéria escura. E aí entra a física. Se o encontrassem matéria escura, o que mudaria na física? Isso me ajudaria imenso, porque é um mistério enorme. Termos provas de que exista matéria escura, que não só existe como é 90% de toda a massa do universo. Nós temos aqui na nossa galáxia toda um halo de matéria escura à volta da parte luminosa e que não sabemos o que é. E, portanto, além disso, seriam partículas novas, totalmente desconhecidas. Iremos ter que estudar todas estas partículas e ver se compreendemos o comportamento dessas massas. Era realmente uma revolução. Ao contrário, se o LUX-REPLIN terminar sem encontrar matéria escura, significa que não existe ou que temos de a procurar de outra forma? Já está a ser desenhado um detector ainda maior, também de xénon líquido, muito parecido com LUX-ZEPLIN, porque o tamanho importa muito. Portanto já está a ser desenhado esse detector que se chama XLZD. Essa é a fase seguinte. Prevê-se que esteja pronto para 2030, 2031 e depois, se esse não der, então temos que procurar outras maneiras. Nesses projetos, qual é o papel de Portugal? Há só uma instituição em Portugal a participar que é o LIP. E então nós fomos responsáveis e mantemos a manutenção. Fomos nós que desenhámos e construímos, digamos, o cérebro da experiência que se chama o sistema de controlo, que é o sistema, como o nome indica, que controla as várias partes do detector e toma a acção quando ela é necessária. Por exemplo, estas dez toneladas de xénon estão sempre a circular, não estão quietinhas no detector. Isso obriga a que abram e fechem as torneiras e sejam lidos muitos sensores. Esta experiência tem 10.000 sensores, para além dos sensores de luz, têm 10.000 sensores de pressão, temperatura porque o cheiro só é liquido a -100 graus. Também fizemos um sistema todo software para ir analisando os dados da experiência, ou seja, os sinais dos sensores de luz para ver se está tudo a correr bem. Isso é bastante complexo porque nós temos que ter a certeza que o detector está estável a um nível muito elevado. A precisão tem que ser muito grande. E agora somos responsáveis por analisar os dados à procura do tal sinal da matéria escura. Temos uma parte dessa tarefa. Portanto, temos várias valências. É um grupo que não é muito grande. Tem 12 pessoas, entre investigadores e estudantes. Fizeram uma operação de 417 dias entre 2023 e 2025, na qual não encontraram matéria escura, mas aprenderam muito. Considera que é um sucesso? Ah sim é um sucesso. Ela foi um sucesso. Nós já temos resultados posteriores a estes, mas estes foram um sucesso porque não só mostraram que era possível operar um detector tão grande. E, por outro lado, ficámos a saber um pouco mais da matéria escura, quanto, por exemplo, a sua potencial massa. In 2022, German psychologist Rieke Schmees swapped a desk for a bike and cycled 12,000km through 16 countries. This adventure took her from Germany to Turkey, via Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Italy and the Balkans.
