Intro: Minutes 0 to 6:30 Chandra has been watching Dexter: Resurrection. She also watched The Materialists but doesn't recommend it. I saw One Battle After Another and enjoyed it. I loved The Long Walk. I have been watching a Canadian comedy called Corner Gas. Royals: Minutes 6:30 to Since we last recorded, the second season of With Love, Meghan came out and we've also had two drops of As Ever products. Harry did a four day tour of England in September, went to Ukraine and visited his dad. Meghan went to the Balenciaga show at Paris Fashion Week earlier this month. She looked serene, glowy and rich and her surprise appearance was a success. It came out that she's friends with Balenciaga's new creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli. He told The Cut that he's been friends with Meghan for years and that she asked if she could attend the show. There was a dumb manufactured controversy over Meghan's visit to Paris after she posted a little Instagram story of her feet while she was in a limo in Paris. The Daily Mail called the video insensitive and claimed she was driving near the tunnel in Paris where Princess Diana died. Meghan's video was taken over a kilometer away from the Pont de Alma tunnel. Meghan attended the Fortune Summit in Washington, DC last week where she talked about the future of her businesses. She also went to a women's networking dinner held by Emma Grede over the weekend. There was some ridiculous criticism of this dinner. On Friday, October 10th, Harry and Meghan were honored for their charity work at for World Mental Health Day in New York. Princess Kate co-authored a little essay ahead of that on how smartphones are bad. Harry and Meghan founded the Parents Network over a year ago and were being honored for that. Last week, around October 15th, Kate and Will made a surprise visit to Northern Ireland. They've been on vacation this week. On Friday, October 17th, Prince Andrew announced in the afternoon our time that he was voluntarily no longer using his titles. He's largely stepped back from royal life in the past few years but we've seen him at family events and it's obvious he has Charles' support. Charles was clearly trying to send a message to Harry by inviting Andrew to royal events. It looks like there was a deal worked out between Charles and Andrew that Andrew gets to keep Royal Lodge and his daughters get to keep their titles. Chandra thinks Charles believes Andrew's lies. We admire Virginia Guiffre for telling the truth. Andrew's announcement came a few days after we saw a 2011 email he sent Jeffrey Epstein after the release of Andrew's infamous photo with then 17-year-old Virginia Guiffre. Andrew wrote to Epstein “we are in this together” and “we'll play some more soon.” An email between Fergie and Epstein was also leaked. Fergie and Andrew wrote those emails after they claimed to have cut ties with Epstein. Fergie borrowed over $2 million from Epstein. I play a segment from an interview with British journalist Emily Maitlis, who interviewed Andrew for his infamous Newsnight interview. Andrew and ex wife Sarah Ferguson will continue to live in Royal Lodge on the Windsor estate, at least as long as Charles is alive. William wants to kick him out and there may be a parliamentary inquiry into his living arrangements. PM Kier Starmer supports an inquiry. Andrew still gets royal perks like being able to use other royal estates. Royal Lodge is sprawling, with a 30 room mansion, chapel, six cottages, pool and tennis court. Andrew has not paid rent in 20 years. He's said to spend his time playing Call of Duty and watching golf. William is trying to take credit for Andrew renouncing his titles. William has been briefing about how much he can't stand Andrew, but he was seen looking chummy with him recently. Beatrice visited her parents at Royal Lodge on Monday. There's some talk about removing Eugenie and Beatrice's titles, but Prince William doesn't seem to want this and they are blameless. Eugenie lives in Portugal is already half out but Beatrice seems to want to be a working royal. King Charles and Camilla visited the Vatican and met with Pope Leo. Camilla was wearing a black mantilla headpiece. They prayed together and it's the first time a British monarch and pope have prayed together in 500 years. This upcoming meeting was incentive for Charles to make a deal with Andrew to give up his titles. Since 2023, the communist leader, Xi Jinping, has administered the removal of dozens of senior officers. These moves signal a factionalism from within the party and the Chinese military. Experts question whether Jinping will survive in his position. This week, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China is holding its Fourth Plenary Session where leaders will work out a Five-Year Plan. The outcome of this meeting will reveal Jinping's standing in party politics. Keep in mind: God is in control. Haggai 2:22 says, “The word of the Lord came unto Haggai … I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms. … I will overthrow the chariots, and those that ride in them; and the horses and their riders shall come down, everyone by the sword of his brother.” Pakistani pastor survives murder plot A Pakistani pastor survived a murder attempt in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, on the morning of Sunday, September 21, reports Barnabas Aid. Pastor Kamran Naz had been traveling by bus, accompanied by his mother, from his home in Gujranwala to lead a church service in Islamabad when he was attacked by two unidentified gunmen. One bullet wounded the pastor in the right leg. A second bullet narrowly missed his head. The attackers then fled on a motorcycle as some church members who were present swiftly came to the pastor's aid and contacted emergency services. Pastor Kamran had previously notified the police of numerous death threats. He was warned to stop ministering at the church or face the consequences.  Pastor Imran Amanat, leader of the Christian advocacy group LEAD Ministries Pakistan, said, “We will not be intimidated or silenced. We demand that the authorities immediately ensure the protection of Christian leaders and hold the criminals accountable. If the government continues to ignore these threats, it becomes complicit in the persecution.” According to Open Doors, Pakistan is the eighth most dangerous country worldwide for Christians. Swedish parents lost custody over kids' required church attendance Certain European nations have now been recognized for their systemic violation of parental rights, especially if the parents happen to be Christian.  Alliance Defending Freedom International is working on a case in Sweden, where parents have lost custody of their children under charges of “religious extremism.” The parents had simply restricted the phone use of their teen children and required attendance at church meetings. After three years of attempts to regain custody, Daniel and Bianca Samson are appealing their case to the European Court of Human Rights. Recently, the High Court has already condemned countries like Spain, Portugal, Italy, Croatia, and Romania for systemic violations in family separation and child welfare cases. Iran threatens Israel Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khamenei took to social media (X) yesterday, effectively taunting the American government, threatening Israel, and asserting independence for the nation's nuclear program. He asked, “What authority do you, Americans, have to dictate what a country should or shouldn't do if it possesses nuclear industry? What position do you hold in the world? How is it any of America's business whether Iran has nuclear capabilities and nuclear industry or not? .. . The U.S. President boasts that they've bombed and destroyed Iran's nuclear industry. Very well, in your dreams!” Trump urges Putin and Zelenskyy to end the war President Donald Trump is urging Ukraine's leader, Volodymyr Zelenskyy to end the war on Russia's terms.  He warned Zelenskyy of Russian President Vladimir Putin's threat to “destroy” Ukraine it there is no agreement.  The Financial Times described the meeting as a “shouting match”, with Trump throwing maps in the room, and “cursing all the time.” Japan greenlights Morning After Pill Japan has just approved the abortifacient drug known as the over-the-counter “morning after” pill. Japan also approved the RU-486 abortion kill pill back in April 2023. Japan recorded 686,000 births in 2024. That's down from 762,000 in 2023, and down from 2,000,000 in 1975. The median house values in Oakland, California and Austin, Texas have dropped by 24% since the peak in 2022. Significant declines have also been reported in New Orleans, San Francisco, Fort Myers, Florida, and Denver, Colorado, reports WolfStreet.com. Gold and silver hit new record highs Metals continued their journey upwards and onwards in Monday's market activity. Gold hit $4,350 per ounce and silver hit $52 and change per ounce, reports Reuters. Trump's Education Dept. funds conservative ideology at colleges The Trump Education Department is offering preferential funding for those universities willing to bend more conservative. Only Vanderbilt, the University of Arizona, and the University of Texas at Austin have embraced to the idea out of the nine universities approached with the proposal, reports Breitbart.  MIT, Brown University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Southern California have all rejected the Trump administration's encouragement to abolish their departments opposed to conservative ideas.  Major jewel heist at Louvre in Paris, France And finally, a team of four thieves broke into the Louvre Museum in Paris over the weekend. They stole priceless jewels dating back to the 19th Century, reports Reuters. Among the stolen items were a tiara and brooch belonging to Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III, an emerald necklace and a pair of emerald earrings from Empress Marie Louise, Napolean's second wife, and a tiara, a necklace, and single earring from the sapphire set that belonged to Queen Marie-Amelie and Queen Hortense. Long Reads continues our recent focus on the politics of southern European countries over the last decade. This week and in our next episode, we're looking in detail at what's been happening in Spain. In contrast with Greece and Portugal, Spain still has a government today headed by the center left. The Spanish Socialist leader Pedro Sanchez has attracted a lot of interest from the international media for appearing to buck the trend as many European countries shift to the right. He's been unusually outspoken on the subject of Gaza. And Sanchez was the only European leader to directly challenge Donald Trump over his demand for a big increase in military spending. Sanchez may be gaining admirers as well as enemies on the international stage. But his position at home is quite precarious. His governing coalition with the left-wing party Sumar doesn't have a majority in parliament. And some of his political allies have been accused of corruption. Over the next two episodes, Long Reads will concentrate on how Sanchez came to power, what his record in office has been, and whether his government is likely to endure.
