#AskDrJohnWatts There is a growing craze surrounding Hakki Pikki Adivasi hair oil, with people attracted by its bold claims of being a comprehensive solution for achieving dense and long hair while addressing baldness. What's the truth? In this educational video, Dr John Watts discusses its pros and cons. It's natural to be drawn to the promises of dark, dense, and long hair with traditional hair oils, especially when celebrities endorse them. However, how accurate are the claims made by the makers of Hakki Pikki Adivasi hair oil? Renowned Hyderabad dermatologist and trichologist Dr John Watts explores this in depth. He notes that while hair growth can be supported by rosemary oil, hair serums, or Minoxidil, the same cannot be said for Hakki Pikki Adivasi hair oil. In response to the popularity of Hakki Pikki Adivasi hair oil, several imitators and counterfeit brands have emerged. These products are often promoted during handicraft expos. Ingredients of Hakki Pikki Adivasi Hair Oil: The primary ingredients in Hakki Pikki Adivasi hair oil include Bhringraj, fenugreek, curry leaves, onion extracts, amla, neem, hibiscus, coconut oil, and various other Ayurvedic components. These ingredients are claimed to make hair shiny, long, and dense, reduce baldness, and improve hair texture. Users are advised to apply the oil half an hour before bathing, massage the scalp gently, and then wash with shampoo. The recommendation is to use the oil for at least three months. Hakki Pikki Adivasi Hair Oil Benefits: The tribal makers list the following benefits: Shiny hair Cool scalp No headache New hair growth in bald areas Hair fall control Criticism of Hakki Pikki Adivasi Hair Oil: Dr Watts criticizes Hakki Pikki Adivasi hair oil, stating that there are no scientific studies or randomized controlled trials to substantiate these claims. The product relies on word-of-mouth marketing rather than scientific evidence. Dr Watts explains that baldness is primarily caused by genetic and hormonal factors, and no hair oil can counteract DHT (dihydrotestosterone) or work internally at the hair roots. While the oil may stimulate temporary hair growth, it cannot prevent DHT from causing hair loss once its use is discontinued. Conclusion: For addressing baldness, the most reliable solutions are hair transplant procedures and preventive medications like DHT blockers. Trichos provides state-of-the-art treatment for various hair loss conditions and offers advanced hair transplant solutions. Call us today for a life-changing experience.

A much more reliable prediction to make: What questions clients will ask during periods of rising interest rates. Inevitably, rising rates environments prompt a flood of inquiries about whether advisors and their clients are better off purchasing individual bonds or pooled products, such as mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs). These questions stem directly from the “principal at maturity” myth, which argues that bond funds will sell bonds at a loss when rates rise, while portfolios of individual bonds can be held to maturity and avoid losses. • Ultimately, bond funds operate the same way as portfolios of individual bonds when cash flows are being reinvested. However, the former generally offer greater return opportunities, lower transaction costs, and higher liquidity—as well as time savings for your practice—than comparable portfolios of individual bonds. Thus, advisors pursuing portfolios of individual bonds should expect to pay greater direct and indirect costs for maintaining complete control of client bond portfolios. The price tag for this control is higher for buyers of municipal and corporate bonds than for buyers of U.S. Treasuries. • Given the higher risks and costs associated with portfolios of individual bonds, and the time they take to manage, most advisors are better served by low-cost mutual funds and ETFs. Particularly in the case of municipal and corporate bonds, it is likely that only clients with enough resources to build a portfolio of comparable scale to a mutual fund (or ETF) can afford to pay the costs for these control advantages. • Consider this report as a resource to inform your client discussions—either for proactive conversations about fixed income portfolio decisions, or to satisfy questions and concerns clients bring to you. For clients who may be partial to holding individual bonds for emotional reasons, the following analysis provides you with empirical data points that could guide them to a more beneficial approach. We also believe the strategies outlined herein can ultimately empower you with more time for higher-value activities, such as deepening client relationships. Authors: Ted Dinucci, CFA | Chris Tidmore, CFA, CPA | Chris Pettit, CFA Acknowledgments: The authors extend our thanks to Elizabeth Muirhead, CFA, and Edward Saracino for their contributions to this report, and to Donald G. Bennyhoff, CFA, and Scott J. Donaldson, CFA, for their prior research, which greatly informed this paper. 2 Introduction The market and economic backdrop today appear highly uncertain, with the highest inflation in 40 years, a series of large rate hikes from the Federal Reserve, and Russia's war in Ukraine, to name a few factors. Understandably, the confluence of these events has led to significant market volatility. It's also led some investors to question the merits of pooled bond vehicles and to ask whether they may be better served by directly owning a portfolio of individual bonds. In some cases, there can be benefits to owning individual bonds, for instance, a nominal immunization strategy where the goal is matching portfolio cash flows to liabilities. However, for the vast majority of advisors and the investors they serve, the likely appeal of individual bonds is largely based on the principal at maturity myth, and embracing it is likely to diminish returns, diversification, and return on your time. This paper offers our perspective on the primary advantages bond funds have over portfolios of individual bonds in the three key regards of returns, diversification, and return on your time (in exchange for less control over individual securities).1 More important, for the vast majority, accessing fixed income via low- cost active or passive funds is likely to provide better outcomes than the direct ownership of individual bonds—even with the hurdle of ongoing management fees. However, we'll first address the flaws in the principal at maturity myth, since this misconception is what generates so much interest in the topic. FIGURE 1. Benefits of choosing either a bond fund or individual bond BOND FUNDS INDIVIDUAL BONDS INCREASED CONTROL ✓ INCREASED DIVERSIFICATION ✓ INCREASED RETURN OPPORTUNITIES ✓ LOWER TRANSACTION COSTS ✓ 1 Vanguard 2017. 3 FIGURE 1. Benefits of choosing either a bond fund or individual bond BOND FUNDS INDIVIDUAL BONDS INCREASED CONTROL ✓ INCREASED DIVERSIFICATION ✓ INCREASED RETURN OPPORTUNITIES ✓ LOWER TRANSACTION COSTS ✓ The principal at maturity myth Holding an individual bond to maturity offers little to no financial benefit to you or your clients versus a pooled product when cash flows are reinvested, as often occurs in laddered individual bond strategies.2 Both portfolios operate in a similar way, but the laddered portfolio is likely to incur greater trading costs and have less diversification. The way that advisors account for laddered bonds in their client statements—by not marking the bonds to their current value, in order to avoid recognizing a paper loss—helps to reinforce the behavioral bias and may mitigate business risk for the advisor. Ultimately, bond prices are inversely related to changes in interest rates: When interest rates rise, the bond's price falls, and vice versa. This is because a bond's coupon payments are typically fixed at issuance, leaving price as the only variable that can be adjusted to make the bond's yield competitive with that of newly issued bonds of similar risk and maturity. This is illustrated in Figure 2. If 10-year bonds are currently yielding 4%, the price of a 2% coupon bond—to be competitive—must decline to a level that results in a 4% yield-to-maturity. In this example, that price is 83.65% of the face value (or $836.50 per $1,000 face value). The 2% bond would provide the same return as the 4% coupon bond trading at par, but some of the return would come from the bond's appreciation from $836.50 to its $1,000 value at maturity, as opposed to the coupon payments. This price adjustment punctures the common myth that holding an individual bond to maturity will provide a financial benefit to your clients. Absent transaction costs, when interest rates change, prices adjust so that total returns will be equal from that point forward, regardless of whether the bond is held to maturity or sold at the prevailing market price with the proceeds reinvested. FIGURE 2. How bond prices adjust to keep yields-to-maturity the same A comparison of hypothetical bonds with 10 years to maturity Coupon (annual interest payment) 6% 4% 2% Market price as a percentage of face value 116.35% 100% 83.65% Yield to maturity 4% 4% 4% Source: Vanguard. Here, it is readily apparent that future returns closely track starting yields. Moreover, the narrative doesn't change whether the index is trading above or below par. Therefore, when evaluating bonds with the same characteristics but with different coupon payments, it is always best to compare their yields to maturity.3 Notes: Returns represent the annualized return on the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Bond Index using monthly data for the period that aligns with the index's starting modified adjusted duration, rounded to the nearest month. For instance, if on December 31, 2005, the duration on the index was 5 years, the forward annualized return would be from January 1, 2006, to December 31, 2010. Yields represent the index's yield to worst (YTW) at the start of each calculation period. YTW is a measure for the lowest possible yield that may be earned on a bond absent the issuer defaulting. The last observation in the figure is September 30, 2015, because after that date the index's starting duration is longer than the time series. Past performance is no guarantee of future returns. The performance of an index is not an exact representation of any particular investment, as you cannot invest directly in an index. Sources: Vanguard analysis of Bloomberg data, as of March 2022. 2 Laddering refers to building a portfolio of bonds with a range of maturities. 3 Yield-to-maturity is the percentage rate of return on a bond, assuming that the bond is held to maturity. For bonds that may be called prior to their stated maturity, yield-to-worst is a preferable measure, as it accounts for the bond's call feature and represents the lowest possible yield that may be earned assuming no default. 4 As mentioned, this principal at maturity myth typically surfaces only when interest rates rise or are expected to rise. If rising rates mean there is a financial benefit to holding bonds to maturity, then falling rates should mean there is a benefit to selling them and reinvesting the proceeds in new bonds. Thus, an active trading strategy would be preferred over a simple buy-and-hold, laddered bond portfolio to take advantage of the market inefficiency. Ironically, this environment has been the norm for the past 20-plus years, yet the trading concept has not been endorsed by the investment community. One doesn't hear that when interest rates are falling, an open-end mutual fund or ETF with no set maturity date is the preferred structure. Thus, the appeal of holding a bond to maturity is likely emotional, as by not selling a bond at a discount to par, your clients are able to avoid the mental roadblock of “recognizing” a loss. Rather than let this behavioral bias win, advisors can seize this as an opportunity to flex their coaching muscles and leverage the trust they've built with clients to help produce better outcomes. Consider this analogy: Just because you chose not to sell your house when prices dipped does not mean it's worth more than the home of your neighbors, who did sell. The same logic applies to fixed income—whether the bonds are held individually, in a bond fund, or in a separately managed account (SMA).4 Diversification can mean higher returns for similar levels of risk In fixed income investing, diversification among issuers, credit qualities, and term structures is a primary consideration for municipal and corporate bonds. For laddered bond portfolios, issuance calendars do not offer consistent access to all types of bonds. On the contrary, with bond funds, greater diversification is possible because of the larger pool of investable assets and the continuous investment in new offerings. This, coupled with the professional staff needed to conduct risk, trade, and credit analysis allows funds to seek return opportunities farther out on the credit quality spectrum than is possible for an advisor. In the case of the latter, their clients may be seriously affected if even one issuer in their (much smaller) portfolio encounters problems. In the case of corporate bonds (and munis), the dynamic nature of credit risk makes it essential to diversify issuer- specific risk. The price volatility that results from a change in an issuer's credit rating is typically asymmetrical: When a credit downgrade occurs, a bond usually will drop much further in price than it would rise on news of an upgrade. This means that for holders of individual corporate bonds, the penalty for choosing a bond that is downgraded is usually greater than the reward for choosing one that gets upgraded. Professional fund managers who are fully focused on credit analysis may be better suited to spot these trends sooner and avoid the negative effects of downgrades and defaults. FIGURE 4. As shown in Figure 4, higher return opportunities, in terms of incremental yield, are available beyond AA rated corporates to compensate for the low, but always possible, risk of default—even when staying within the corporate investment-grade universe. A more diversified approach that spans the spectrum of investment-grade corporates can translate into a meaningful increase in yield without sacrificing the primary role of high-quality fixed income in a portfolio—acting as a ballast to risk assets. It should be noted that diversification of credit quality can also be achieved through passive exposure. Notes: Average option-adjusted spreads (OAS) cover the period of January 1997 to April 2022. Moreover, through broad diversification, as an advisor, you would be able to increase your client's long-term expected returns for their fixed income holdings, while significantly reducing single-issuer risk and still maintain high overall credit quality. The performance of an index is not an exact representation of any particular investment, as you cannot invest directly in an index. Transaction costs are real, but often go overlooked All bond portfolios incur costs. Though the management cost component often receives the lion's share of attention because it is readily apparent and known in advance, it also represents only one part of the equation. Less scrutinized, but similarly detrimental to long-term financial outcomes are transaction costs (e.g., bid-ask spreads). Ultimately, bid-ask spreads tend to vary by trade size and bond sector, and the size of the spread is typically larger for small transactions. Bond mutual funds and ETFs buy and sell large quantities of bonds, and these large transactions can command higher prices for sales and lower prices for buys. So long as the size of the spreads paid or received are inversely related to purchase lot size, bond funds have a transaction cost advantage over individual bond portfolios. The benefits of scale are most significant in the municipal bond market, but still relevant and tell a similar story to that of corporates. Figure 6 illustrates this point. It shows that in the municipal bond market, the spread for a retail trade (less than $100,000 per bond) on average has been consistently higher than that for an institutional trade. Specifically, between January 2019 and April 2021 the effective spread for transactions with a par value between $25,001 and $100,000 averaged 56.4 basis points (bps), while transactions with a par value of over $1 million averaged 20.2 bps. This differential translates to lower total return for clients who are not able to transact at scale.6 Additionally, large firms, such as Vanguard, are able to get the broadest access to bonds in the primary market, so it's not only about the size of the trade and lower costs, but also what bonds one gets to purchase. This is especially important as there tends to be a drop-off in liquidity as time passes from issuance. FIGURE 6. Spreads are significantly wider for retail trades relative to institutional trades (bps) $10,000 or less $10,001- $25,000 $25,001- $100,000 $100,001- $1 million $1 million+ 20.2 56.4 35.5 63.6 81.9 In the end, higher spreads translate into lower returns. Whether creating a taxable or tax-exempt bond portfolio for a client, the basic decision comes down to this: Does the fund expense ratio detract less from the portfolio's total return than (1) the return surrendered by a higher credit-quality bias, if one exists, (2) the default risk, if there is no quality bias, or (3) the additional transaction costs? It would be rare for the fund expense ratio (particularly in the case of a lower-cost bond fund) to be larger than the other costs. Notes: The above figure shows the average effective spread for municipal bond transactions of various sizes from January 2019 to April 2021. Effective spread is a measure of customer transaction costs and is computed daily for each bond as the difference between the volume-weighted average dealer-to-customer buy and sell price, and is then averaged across bonds using equal weighting. Sources: MSRB data and Vanguard analysis. 5 Though an advised client's fixed income portfolio is unlikely to be comprised of only intermediate-term (5- to 10-year maturity) U.S. corporate bonds. 6 As a simple example, if constructing an initial bond portfolio with an average duration of five years and transaction costs of 50 bps, it would translate to 10 bps per year. 6 Control of the portfolio One, or perhaps the only, advantage of self-directed individual bond portfolios and, to some extent, SMAs over pooled vehicles is the owner's ability to influence portfolio decisions. The motivation for maintaining control generally falls into three camps: strict portfolio guidelines that place firm restrictions on portfolio characteristics, such as credit-quality (e.g., all-AA portfolio) or limits on derivatives usage; matching portfolio cash-flows with specific liabilities (e.g., cash-flow matching); and tax concerns. Given the inflexibility of the first, and presumably, high-level of certainty of the second, we'll focus on the potential tax considerations, as certain common beliefs may be overstated and therefore warrant a discussion. Regarding taxes: Because clients directly own the bonds in an SMA or a laddered bond portfolio, as their advisor you can use any net losses from individual bond positions for tax purposes to partially offset your client's earned income or to offset realized capital gain liabilities from other investments. A mutual fund or ETF, on the other hand, cannot pass through realized losses to its shareholders. Instead, the fund uses realized losses against realized gains, and carries forward any excess losses to be used against future gains. Although this may defer the pass-through of losses, it provides long-term tax efficiency to the pooled structure. In addition, as the advisor, you have a further option: You can sell your clients' fund shares to realize a loss where applicable. Regarding individual bond portfolios or SMAs, another factor to consider is that to take advantage of losses in these accounts, you will incur transaction costs for your clients on both the sale of the current bond and the purchase of the new bond. Though all the above applies to both taxable and tax- exempt bonds, in terms of the latter, there is often the additional consideration of alternative minimum taxes (AMT). With an individual bond portfolio or SMA, the portfolio can be tailored to bonds that are exempt from AMT or specific to issues from your client's home state. While this is true, it is important to acknowledge that there are currently a number of state-specific vehicles available for your clients—particularly in states with high tax rates. Also, though it's sometimes forgotten, the key point that advisors should be concerned with is seeking to maximize client after-tax returns, rather than with minimizing taxes. Bonds issued outside a client's home state and bonds subject to AMT often carry higher yields to maturity. As a result, your clients may well get higher after- tax returns from a portfolio including such bonds. In addition, clients gain from increased diversification—an important benefit. With the preceding considerations in mind, it may be impractical to transition clients from their existing SMA solutions or portfolios of individual bonds into a primarily fund-aligned strategy. For advisors that already utilize an SMA or construct their own bond sleeves, a bond fund can serve as a strong complement—by providing some additional liquidity to the portfolio and a solution for reinvesting periodic cash flows from their individual bond holdings (or SMAs) to reduce potential cash drag. Conclusion For the reasons described in this paper, the vast majority of advisors who invest for their clients are best served through low-cost bond funds. Only those advised clients with the resources to achieve scale comparable to that of a mutual fund should consider putting certain control features ahead of the benefits that a pooled investment vehicle offers. Funds generally provide better diversification, greater return opportunities, lower transaction costs, and higher liquidity for your clients. For advisors, the time savings from outsourcing the day-to-day portfolio management can be reinvested in higher returning opportunities, such as deepening client relationships and growing your practice. Although bonds that are held directly can provide certain advantages over bond mutual funds—primarily related to control over security-specific decisions—such control comes at a cost. To construct an individual bond portfolio, an advisor must assign a very high value to the control benefits to justify the higher costs and additional risks involved. 6 7 References Bennyhoff, Donald, Scott Donaldson, Jamese Dunlap, and Daren Roberts, 2017. In this episode of the "Admittedly" podcast, host Thomas Caleel advises families and students on how to proceed with college application preparation in the wake of a serious disciplinary issue. Admissions officers look for self-aware, mature students who understand their challenges and how they've grown from them. If serious trouble occurs senior year, taking a gap year to build a strong track record might be beneficial. Thomas emphasizes the importance of addressing mistakes during applications, as it shows growth and self-awareness, which are valuable for both undergraduate and graduate admissions. Summary of Key Points: Trouble is Common: Caleel starts by framing that serious incidents in high school, such as suspensions or expulsions, are becoming more common and can significantly impact students and their communities. It's important to address these issues rather than ignore them. AO Perspective: Caleel describes that admissions officers have a challenging job but are generally supportive and looking for students who demonstrate self-awareness and maturity. They want to see applicants own their mistakes and show how they've grown from them. Ownership and Redemption: Caleel advises that students should acknowledge their mistakes, understand the reasons behind them, and demonstrate genuine efforts to make amends and improve. This process of ownership and redemption is crucial for a positive presentation in applications. Application Strategy: Caleel elaborates that when discussing past troubles during applications, students should provide a thoughtful explanation and evidence of change, rather than trying to conceal the incident. Demonstrating how one has learned from and addressed past issues can be compelling to admissions committees. Timing: Caleel emphasizes that the timing of a serious incident can affect application strategies. If a significant issue occurs close to application deadlines, taking a gap year to build a credible record of improvement might be advisable. This allows for stronger recommendations and evidence of personal growth. Conclusion: For families reeling to recover from a disciplinary issue involving their student, Thomas Caleel gives his advice on the best way to continue them on a path towards college admission. Students should demonstrate a mature and empathetic attitude, taking steps to prove they have accepted their actions and are making efforts to amend and improve. Join him next week to discuss US boarding schools and how to decide if they are a fit for your student. About Thomas Caleel Thomas is an alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania. The developing story is now moving into the next phase as the 2024 field season is beginning.   In this episode of Coffee with Samso Episode 197, Sam share with us the philosophy of the company and the strategy for AuMega Metals and the reasoning behind the rebranding exercise. AuMega is well supported with an international miner, B2Gold Corp. as a major shareholder and that clearly show the confidence the shareholders have in the AuMega Metals Limited story. Samso's Conclusion For those readers who have been followers of the Coffee with Samso series, it is common knowledge that I am a big fan of the AuMega story (formerly Matador Mining Limited). I have always said that the biggest value adding process for shareholders is to look for your own discovery. Promoters in this space preach that the refurbishing of projects is more cost effective but in practice this is more of a myth that a reality. The strategy by the management of AuMega is disciplined and with the stewardship of Justin Osborne (ex- Gold Road Resources) leading the technical search and the corporate influenced Sam Pazuki, I am in no doubt that the mineral exploration will prove their strategy to be fruitful. The rebranding is clearly a means of aligning the company name with its purpose for finding large economical deposits. The projects that is in the portfolio is the reason why "Mega" projects will be discovered. This is what I call a mineral province play to ensure the largest probability to discover economical deposit. As the new drilling season starts to take shape, the next phase of the results will be highly anticipated from the company's shareholders. As soon as you open the box, before you even pull the player out, you're greeted with a clear diagram and description of the 7 steps required to get the unit to start playing records. The diagram has clear and concise instructions guiding you through each of the fairly typical steps involved in setting up a turntable. If you've done it before, you know the steps; if you've never done it, the steps are simple. It is the easiest record player we've ever set up. Depending on how you opt to install, you can be listening to vinyl in under 5 minutes. The turntable has two output options, there are RCA connectors in the back that you can run to a traditional amplifier and speakers. But it also has Bluetooth - so you can send your music to your bluetooth speakers totally wirelessly. We set it up so we could test both options. For the RCA wired connection we used a Yamaha A-S701 amplifier powering a set of Ara Derderian signature tower speakers. For Bluetooth we got our hands on a couple different pairs of AptX headphones. We didn't have any AptX wireless speakers to test with, but the headphones gave us a pretty good idea of what to expect. All told, from unboxing to savoring the first notes of your cherished records, the entire experience is streamlined and simple. Performance As simple as it is to install, where the Victrola Hi-Res Carbon truly shines is in its exceptional audio performance. We compared it with Braden's current record player, a Yamaha MusicCast VINYL 500 turntable that retails for $100 more than the Victrola at $699. The audio performance difference between the two was astonishing. We would play a song from an album on one player, then transfer the record to the other player and listen to it again. The first time we went from Yamana to Victrola, we had to double check that nobody bumped the EQ. The base was cleaner and more pronounced, everything in each song we tested just sounded better, clearer, more dynamic coming from the Vicrtola.  It's rare for one piece of home audio gear to so wildly change your view of the world. Listening to records is a fun, nostalgic experience. Oftentimes you revel in and enjoy some of the static, the crackling and popping that we remember so fondly from our youth. But with records, we never really stop to ask ourselves if what we're hearing is the best that record can sound. You pull out a record, you play it, and that's it. But the Victrola has changed, at least Braden's approach, to record players - it made every record we played sound better than his Yamaha.    Next step was testing Bluetooth performance. You'd be surprised how rare AptX still is in headphones, so we had to procure a few pairs to make sure we were hearing the best the Victrola could offer, and it did not disappoint. While the listening experience is vastly different between a pair of tower speakers and a pair of wireless headphones, The Victrola performed incredibly well. The music sounded clear, clean and very rich. We can imagine that paired with a set of high quality AptX wireless speakers, the Victrola will blow you away. To be fair, the Yamaha has a few more bells and whistles than the Victrola, which may explain the higher price tag. In addition to Bluetooth (tho not AptX), the Yamaha has MusicCast built-in so you can send the audio around your house if you have a MusicCast compatible system. It also allows you to stream music services with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirPlay 2 or Spotify Connect and has voice control with A-Lady and Google Assistant devices or S-Lady via AirPlay 2. With records, you have to flip them or change them every 4-5 songs. The streaming capabilities of the Yamaha allow you to listen to music without as much maintenance, which can come in handy at times. Not to be outdone, Victrola offers an upgraded version of the Hi-Res Carbon called the Stream Carbon that works with Sonos - it retails for $799. If you're in the Sonos ecosystem, it's worth a look. Aesthetically the Victrola Hi-Res Carbon is gorgeous. Minimal, clean, very sleek. Its stylish and subtle design not only exudes elegance but also  ensures stability and durability. Crafted from premium materials, this record player is built to last, promising years of sonic bliss and conversations started. While the Yamaha includes a built in dust cover, the Victrola includes a removable dust cover. The built-in cover is very convenient, but there's no denying how great the Victrola looks with the cover removed while you're spinning a record. With the Yamaha it always sits under the plastic cover, but in the open air the Victrola looks like a statement piece. Conclusion: For those seeking a record player that harmonizes impeccable performance with ease of setup, the Victrola Hi-Res Carbon is an excellent choice. Its user-centric design, exceptional sound quality, and meticulous craftsmanship make it a strong contender for anyone who loves vinyl or for those who think they might enjoy getting into vinyl. It more than delivers on the pristine and vibrant sound quality that you didn't know you were missing. Marry the Hi-Res Carbon with a pair of high res Bluetooth AptX speakers and you have a turntable-in-a-box system that will put any of the all-in-one units on the market to shame - and the setup is just as simple! If you're in the Sonos ecosystem, check out the Stream Carbon. What you lose in Bluetooth you gain in Sonos integration and an app for setup.

#AskDrJohnWatts Different questions related to baldness, hair grafts, hair loss, hair transplant procedures and medical treatments for hair loss are being raised by patients now and then, including the followers of Dr John Watts, who keep flooding his series of hugely popular educational videos on his popular YouTube channel with queries related to different hair issues. In this educational video session, Hyderabad's noted dermatologist & trichologist and one of the Best Hair Transplant Surgeons in Hyderabad, Dr John Watts explains the dos and don'ts of alcohol consumption while undergoing hair procedures such as GFC, PRP, derma roller or Stem Cell Treatment. Is it safe to consume alcohol or should avoid it altogether permanently? Is there a time after which one can resume alcohol consumption? Dr John Watts answers all these questions. So far, he has performed over 2000+ hair transplant surgeries successfully. Jagan Mohan Royal asks: Sir, during Growth Factor Concentrate (GFC) therapy, can I consume alcohol? Is it safe? Please explain. Many hair loss patients undergoing various hair procedures are often curious about the impact of alcohol consumption on their treatments. While Dr John Watts doesn't advocate a complete prohibition of alcohol, he emphasizes that individuals undergoing procedures like GFC (Growth Factor Concentrate) therapy, stem cell treatment, PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma), or dermaroller treatment should follow certain strict guidelines to avoid any risky side effects to their hair growth. In response to a query by Jagan Mohan Royal, Dr Watts recommends abstaining from alcohol consumption 2–3 days before and after the procedure. Usually, while undergoing these hair procedures such as GFC, PRP, dermaroller, or stem cell treatments, spacing is important between two procedures by at least 21 days to ensure optimal results. “If one sets aside these 5–6 days before and after the procedure, then one is free to engage in social drinking in other remaining days well before a new procedure is due,” said Dr John Watts, reassuring that social drinking during the remaining days, beyond the specific guideline period, is not harmful. Dr Watts explains that during these procedures, growth factors, including serum and platelets, are added to the scalp. Consuming alcohol around the time of the treatment can potentially affect hair growth. “Hence, it is crucial to avoid alcohol on the day of the procedure and the days immediately before and after,” he informed. He also advises against taking a head bath immediately after PRP or GFC procedures, as the growth factor concentrate can get washed away. Waiting until the next morning to wash the scalp will ensure the effectiveness of the treatment. Conclusion: For individuals undergoing hair procedures like GFC, PRP, stem cell treatment, or derma roller, it is essential to follow the recommended guidelines regarding alcohol consumption. Avoiding alcohol in the days leading up to and following the procedure immediately will contribute to the success and effectiveness of the treatments. Additionally, spacing out the procedures and taking care of post-procedure instructions, such as delaying head baths, will optimize the benefits of these hair treatments.

Challenges and failures are not roadblocks but stepping stones to personal growth and development. In a world where resilience and independence are increasingly valued, navigating setbacks becomes vital. As we embrace the ever-evolving landscape of the modern era, adapting and thriving in the face of adversity becomes essential. Join us as we explore the power of challenges, the importance of resilience, and the journey toward independence. Ron Gus Gustafson shares his life experiences, lessons, and advice to future leaders. One should face challenges and failures as it cultivates resilience and independence. Tune in as young leaders ask questions about life, personal growth, entrepreneurship, and more! Quotes: "God had a perfect plan for my life, and I never would have found it if that young man hadn't picked me up out of the gutter." – Ron Gus Gustafson "Between failure and success is simply one more try." – Ron Gus Gustafson "For young ones, if you see them jumping in when you're hanging, tell them I want to fall and take on these challenges, not letting them take on these challenges and responsibilities for you guys will only benefit you in the long run." – Matt Beaudreau Takeaways: Divine interventions or encounters with people who believe in us can sometimes shape our lives unexpectedly. Being open to help and guidance can lead to life-changing opportunities and a shift in perspective. True success in education and life is not merely about accumulating knowledge for the sake of it. Instead, it involves actively engaging with the material, understanding its principles, and applying them effectively. Genuine learning goes beyond surface-level memorization. Recognizing and acknowledging the mental strength and resilience required to overcome challenges is crucial. Physical feats often stem from a strong and determined mindset. Persistence and the willingness to try again after failure are key to success. Each attempt brings us closer to our goals, and the discipline to keep going despite setbacks can lead to significant progress and accomplishments. Conclusion: For children to mature and flourish, giving them opportunities to test themselves, take on responsibilities, and make mistakes is crucial. A person's realization that they've reached their limit and are ready to make positive changes in their lives is often a direct result of hitting rock bottom, making this realization a potent catalyst for change. Individuals can overcome obstacles and make significant, long-lasting improvements by actively seeking out challenges and learning more about the factors contributing to personal growth.

What is the status of your self-worth at present? How do you determine your self-worth? Many people base their value on things such as how many friends they have, their income, what car they drive, what neighbourhood they live in, the number of social media followers they have, and even their relationship status. All these are external factors and in this episode, we talk about how our worth is at the core of our very selves—our thoughts, our feelings, and our behaviours. These are all intimately tied to how we perceive our value as human beings, our internal sense of simply being good enough and worthy of love and belonging from others. If you are struggling with your self worth this episode is for you. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.09.14.507883v1?rss=1 Authors: Iglesias, L. P., Coelho, A. A., da Silva, N. R., Muller, H. K., Moreira, F. A., Wegener, G., Joca, S. Abstract: BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and co-morbid depression are frequently associated with severe symptoms, poor response to treatment and worse prognosis. Due to the absence of a suitable animal model, little is known about the biological basis of the comorbidity, severely limiting the discovery of new and more effective treatment options. The Flinders Sensitive Line rats (FSL) is a well-validated, selectively bred animal model of depression. However, several of its features, such as cognitive deficits and altered hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis response, also match symptomatic clusters of PTSD. In parallel, its resistant counterpart, the Flinders Resistant Line (FRL), is extensively used as a simple control. Still, little is known about its performance compared to the original strain, Sprague Dawley (SD), from which the FSL/FRL was originally derived. AIMS: Characterizing the behavioural performance and mechanisms involved in FSL, FRL and SD rats in fear-memory paradigms. METHODS: FSL, SD and FRL animals were submitted to tests assessing hippocampal-dependent and fear-related memory. Subsequently, plasticity factors and endocrine responses to stress were analysed to elucidate the molecular basis for the observed behavioural alterations. RESULTS: We found that FRL animals presented intact recognition memory and innate fear responses but could not properly display conditioned responses in the Conditioned Fear Conditioning (CFC) paradigm. FSL animals, despite a poor performance in the Novel Object Recognition task (NOR), showed similar levels of conditioned responses compared to SD, but impairments in extinction learning, a feature highly related to PTSD. The behavioural alterations were accompanied by alterations in plasma corticosterone levels and hippocampal expression of the glucocorticoid receptor and FKBP51. CONCLUSION: For the first time, we demonstrate an animal model of resilience and vulnerability to PTSD and co-morbid depression. The results suggest that the endophenotypes may be based on aberrant endocrine stress responses in the hippocampus. Copy rights belong to original authors. The use of the word alignment is subjective and can mean different things to different people. As voice teachers, we usually refer to alignment in the context of postural alignment. We understand that alignment is a necessary component for promoting healthy and efficient singing. However, to be in true alignment with authentic self means that we are balanced from a physiological, psychological, social and environmental perspective. From time to time, we can feel disconnected in our relationships with others, we may find ourselves in a job where we have lost our passion or we may feel physically disconnected in space and time. If you relate to any of these scenarios, you may well be in misalignment and this can impact all areas of your health, including vocal health. In this episode, I discuss alignment in all these four key areas and I share strategies that will help you realign to your authentic self. In this episode00:58 - What is alignment?03:35 - My experience with a misaligned student11.59 - Alignment with self15:35 - Does this sound like you?18:09 - Alignment with the environment19:55 - Measures for checking in on your alignment21:17 - My story of misalignment 28:15 - Physical Alignment  29:30 - Identifying physical habits32:08 - Postural Alignment 35:34 - Affects on the voice37:06 - Conclusion For more go to https://drmarisaleenaismith.com/12Like this episode?   Sermon - Living in the joy of salvation (1 Peter 1:3-9) 1 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, 5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7 These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith – of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire – may result in praise, glory and honour when Jesus Christ is revealed. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9 for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls. (1 Peter 1:3-9) Introduction The Apostle Peter was writing to a group of people, followers of Jesus, spread throughout what we know as modern Turkey. These believing sojourners were undergoing trials, suffering & persecution. Peter instructs them toward Christian stability, and the proper expression of this stability and growth. Throughout the letter, Peter stresses a hope so alive, so glorious and so very certain, that any persecution, trial and suffering can be endured. These people are sojourners or pilgrims on a spiritual journey! Last week we discovered that Peter reminds them of the God they worship and live for - a missional & relational God of salvation. A loving God who is Trinity – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. God the Father has chosen and is calling all people to Himself, out of amazing love for them. God the Holy Spirit sanctifies and cleanses to allow people to enter God’s holy presence through the obedient sacrifice of God the Son. Then we learnt together about how within the believer, that there is a battle. A spiritual battle – the old earthly human nature battling against the new nature of the believer given to them by God. Salvation is yours, Peter says, so go let the world know that this salvation can be theirs also, by living so devoted to God that it permeates every facet of your life. That people will know you are God’s possession and God lives through you! WOW! The believing sojourner is to live such a good life that they are good witnesses for the God in whom they believe! We also know that this group of people are undergoing various forms of suffering and grief. Not the least, sporadic events of persecution but also the possibility of systematic persecution to come. 1. God the Joy Giver! Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ (v3) His great mercy he has given (v3) Resurrection of Jesus Christ (v3) Jesus Christ is revealed (v7) 2. Living Out Joy! New birth (v3) Living hope (v3) Inheritance (v4) Shielded by God’s power (v5) Salvation – future (v5) 3. Rejoice! (v6 Faith’s genuineness (v7) Faith’s love (v8) Faith’s belief (v8) Faith’s joy (v8) Faith’s outcome (v9) Conclusion For those of us who would call ourselves a Christian - a sojourner of Jesus Christ – you believe in Him and have placed your faith in Him for new hope, new life and salvation of your soul. I wonder what trials including alienation and persecution you have undergone in the past, are undergoing at the moment or will persevere through in the future. I don’t even know how I will suffer and grieve in the future. But I do know who has the answers to our trials and testing. It is my God and your God. Our God of love – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. He knows the answers and I have to trust in Him. Are you currently undergoing any sort of trial - run to God! He will listen! He is your protector, your guard and your empowerer! Remember He lives within you! He loves you! He cares for you! He is a personal God who has your best interests at heart! As Christians we worship and serve a God who knows intimately about personal suffering. Our God isn’t an inanimate and passive carving, to be placed on a shelf or a wall which is immune to the suffering of the world. No! Our God is a personal, dynamic and active God who knows the suffering we ourselves endure – because He Himself has suffered. He is an intimate, dynamic, responsive and living personal being who has shared in our sufferings through Jesus when He died on a cross 2000 years ago. This same Jesus who was resurrected and raised to new life and witnessed by our author - the Apostle Peter! WOW! The ineffable God made known to humanity in the man Jesus Christ. As part of our new hope and new life as Christians, as sojourners of Jesus Christ, we await that glorious day in the future when He has come again. That day when Jesus Christ will take your face in his scarred hands, and wipe away your tears. Wipe away your tears – tears of pain released and tears of ineffable and inexplicable joy! WOW! You and I will know then, that it was all worth it – the sufferings and trials that we have endured in this life, in order to enter the new life to come. Amazing! WOW! On that final day, when your faith is tested, will it be proven to be genuine? Let this faith of yours always seek to give praise, honour and glory to Jesus and Him alone. May it be a faith being worked out by you living a life which is worthy of Him alone – which is seen by those currently not in the faith. Your genuine faith being expressed with inexplicable joy to those outside. As Christians here, just as it was last week, it is an imperative that we go and show our new life, new hope, empowered and safeguarded by God’s power alone. Persecution may come and we will in some quarters even now be rejected. But we persevere. As Christians, we have good news for the world – it is up to us to go out living in the joy of salvation. We will be alienated by some, but also embraced by others. God is for us – who then shall we fear? God is a mission God – Peter clearly knows that – and because He is a mission God, we too are also on a mission. We have to take risks in order to continue this mission. History is filled with churches that failed to adapt and take the mission opportunities available to them. Will we be like that? I for one certainly do not hope so. We need to be reaching out, including those forgotten people – the people who cannot get out of their own homes for what ever reason. Helping those people who are already Christians and helping those who are not yet Christian, to find this living hope in God. God is a tri-unity of Love... The Father loves the Son and the Spirit. The Son loves the Father and the Spirit. The Spirit loves the Father and the Son. We as a church are also to be a community of love. A love which mirrors that of the God of love... A love which looks not to its own interests but to the interests of others... Let's go love... Encourage others - not just your friends or those you like... Let's go encourage others enduring all sorts of tests and trials, just as Peter has done to this group of spiritual sojourners... God loves you... Podcast #836: Short Throw Projector

HDTV and Home Theater Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 23, 2018 47:03

Short Throw Projectors There was a short throw projector on Woot! this week for $999. Not a bad price at all for the potential to have a 100” television in your family room or home theater. That got us thinking… Why aren't more people using short throw projectors in their homes? Their price per square inch of screen real estate is by far the most cost effective way to get a huge screen at home, and the install and setup is a snap. So what gives? Why aren't people using them. Let us first apologize if some of you reading or listening are using short throw projectors at home. We aren't saying that you are not a person. We're simply saying that to date, we haven't seen a short throw projector in use in any home we've ever been to, nor have we had anyone brag to us about how cool their short throw setup is. We're going to take a look at some pros and cons and see if we can come up with theories on why they haven't caught on. If you have one, or have had one in the past and decided to ditch it, we'd love to hear your take. What is it For those who don't know, a short throw projector is a home theater projector that, like a standard front projection system, can give you a very large display area in your home, often maxing out at 100” to 120”. The big difference is that they bounce the image off a mirror or two and project that large screen from only a few inches or a couple feet from the screen itself, not from all the way in the back of the room. So you get a huge home cinema by placing the projector on a standard TV stand at the front of your living room, in the same place you might put a center speaker or a soundbar. *Aside: Remember the old school big screen CRTs that would fold down or you'd pull a box out into the room to beam the image up onto the screen? It's kinda like that. Only not. Pros and Cons The pros are obvious: the cost to purchase a 100” or 120” television is astronomical - unattainable for most of us regular folk. So the only way to get a home theater that size is with a projector. But projectors are difficult to install, often requiring a professional to run cables and power to the back of the room. But with a short throw, there's not need to run anything to the back of the room. You just set them on your TV cabinet and hook them up like you would any other television. No install cost, low projector cost, instant home theater. The cons, as you can image, are nearly identical to the cons for typical from projection systems. In both cases, most are 1080p still. While prices for 4k are dropping, the are still at a good premium and selection is limited. Also, both suffer from a lack of overall brightness, making the ability to control ambient light critical, especially for daytime viewing. If you have a bright room with a bunch of windows, most projectors, including short throw projectors, will be frustrating to use during the day. And projectors require screens. You can't really just beam the picture onto a wall and expect to be happy with the picture. That means a second product to buy and install, increasing the complexity of the overall system. On top of that, many short throw projectors require a special screen that has been built to match the projector. At least with typical front projection you can buy and install whatever screen you like. Not so with some short throw setups. Probably the only con that short throw projectors don't share with standard front projectors is that people can walk through the beam and block it from getting to the screen. Unless people routinely walk on your TV cabinet, you won't have that issue with a short throw. Options LG PF1000UW The short throw projector we saw on Woot! for $999 was the LG PF1000UW Ultra Short Throw Smart LED Projector with webOS 3.0 Smart TV and Magic Remote. The specs sound pretty compelling, even for dedicated home theater use, not just portable or temporary instant home theater for backyards or parties or other events. With webOS 3.0 built in, it's like buying a Smart TV, just with a bigger screen. The throw distance is really short; at just 5 inches away you can get 60 inches of home theater, or go to 15 inches back to get images up to 100 inches on screen. And it has a max brightness of 1000 lumen. You get full HD 1080p picture quality. We would have loved 4k, but 1080p is good too. The LED lamp is very efficient and will last up to an estimated 30,000 hours. That means the lamp does not have to be replaced for about 10 years if the projector is used 8 hours every day. And it has 4-corner keystone technology that allows for adjustment of each of the four corners of the image for ideal projection image alignment. LG PF1000UW: $1399 MSRP LG also makes the HF85JA with 1500 lumens for a $1599 suggested price and the PH450U with 450 lumens for a $599 street (Amazon) price. Optoma EH320UST The Optoma Ultra Short Throw 3D 1080p Projector EH320UST is another option in this category. This option is impressively bright. It can hit a peak brightness of 4000 ANSI lumens. You get full HD 1080p resolution, 20,000:1 contrast ratio and it can also display true 3D content. They claim a long lamp life citing up to 6,500 hours, which is great, but not exactly the 30,000 hours you can get from LG. And this one can project a 100” image from just 21 inches away. Optoma EH320UST: $1564 street (Amazon) NEC NP-UM351W Nearly as bright as the Optoma, this unit from NEC gets up to 3500 lumens bright. Both are pretty close to good daytime viewing. It has a special Ultra short throw lens (0.36:1 throw ratio) helps eliminate shadows on the screen along with projected light in the presenter's eyes created by traditional front projection systems. Perfectly paired with a View Sonic BCP100 or BCP120 ambient light diffusing screen (sold separately), the PX800HD delivers a brilliant and supersized cinema experience that LED TVs can't match. ViewSonic PX800HD: $1299 Conclusion: For anyone that wants a 100 inch or larger screen, without having to run any cables to the back of the room, the short throw projector sure feels like the perfect fit. We're at a loss on why they aren't more popular. Have an opinion on them or direct knowledge of them? Fire off an email or drop a comment on the web page. Could be that the lack of enthusiasm or market penetration is due to incredibly poor marketing. Or maybe most people just don't have a wall big enough to accomodate a 100” screen. Who knows?

Prospective European-wide multicentre study on a blood based real-time PCR for the diagnosis of acute schistosomiasis

Background: Acute schistosomiasis constitutes a rare but serious condition in individuals experiencing their first prepatent Schistosoma infection. To circumvent costly and time-consuming diagnostics, an early and rapid diagnosis is required. So far, classic diagnostic tools such as parasite microscopy or serology lack considerable sensitivity at this early stage of Schistosoma infection. To validate the use of a blood based real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test for the detection of Schistosoma DNA in patients with acute schistosomiasis who acquired their infection in various endemic regions we conducted a European-wide prospective study in 11 centres specialized in travel medicine and tropical medicine. Methods: Patients with a history of recent travelling to schistosomiasis endemic regions and freshwater contacts, an episode of fever (body temperature >= 38.5 degrees C) and an absolute or relative eosinophil count of >= 700/mu l or 10%, were eligible for participation. PCR testing with DNA extracted from serum was compared with results from serology and microscopy. Results: Of the 38 patients with acute schistosomiasis included into the study, PCR detected Schistosoma DNA in 35 patients at initial presentation (sensitivity 92%). In contrast, sensitivity of serology (enzyme immunoassay and/or immunofluorescence assay) or parasite microscopy was only 70% and 24%, respectively. Conclusion: For the early diagnosis of acute schistosomiasis, real-time PCR for the detection of schistosoma DNA in serum is more sensitive than classic diagnostic tools such as serology or microscopy, irrespective of the region of infection. Generalization of the results to all Schistosoma species may be difficult as in the study presented here only eggs of S. mansoni were detected by microscopy. A minimum amount of two millilitre of serum is required for sufficient diagnostic accuracy.

Effect of dsRNA on Mesangial Cell Synthesis of Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor Type 1 and Tissue Plasminogen Activator

Background/Aims: Viral infections are a major problem worldwide and many of them are complicated by virally induced glomerulonephritides. Progression of kidney disease to renal failure is mainly attributed to the development of renal fibrosis characterized by the accumulation of extracellular matrix components in the mesangial cell compartment and the glomerular basement membrane. Plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 (PAI-1) and tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) are major regulators of plasmin generation and play an important role in generation and degradation of glomerular extracellular matrix components. Viral receptors expressed by mesangial cells (MC) are known to be key mediators in immune-mediated glomerulonephritis. We investigated the effect of stimulation of the viral receptors toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3) and retinoic acid-inducible gene I (RIG-I) on the expression of PAI-1 and t-PA. Methods: Expression of PAI-1 and t-PA in immortalized human MC stimulated with polyriboinosinic: polyribocytidylic acid {[}poly(I:C)] RNA and cytokines were analyzed by real-time RT-PCR and ELISA. Results: Incubation of MC with poly(I:C) RNA to activate the viral receptors TLR3 and RIG-I upregulates the expression of PAI-1 and t-PA. Knockdown of viral receptors with specific siRNA abolishes the induction of PAI-1 and t-PA. Conclusion: For the first time a link between the activation of viral receptors on MC and potentially causative agents in the development of glomerulosclerosis and tubulointerstitial fibrosis is shown. The progression of inflammatory processes to glomerulosclerosis can be postulated to be directly enhanced by viral infection. Copyright (C) 2009 S. Karger AG, Basel

Segmental stabilizing exercises and low back pain: What is the evidence?

Study design: A systematic review of randomized controlled trials. Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of segmental stabilizing exercises for acute, subacute and chronic low back pain with regard to pain, recurrence of pain, disability and return to work. Methods: MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Cochrane Controlled Trials Register, PEDro and article reference lists were searched from 1988 onward. Randomized controlled trials with segmental stabilizing exercises for adult low back pain patients were included. Four comparisons were foreseen: (1) effectiveness of segmental stabilizing exercises versus treatment by general practitioner (GP); (2) effectiveness of segmental stabilizing exercises versus other physiotherapy treatment; (3) effectiveness of segmental stabilizing exercises combined with other physiotherapy treatment versus treatment by GP and (4) effectiveness of segmental stabilizing exercises combined with other physiotherapy treatment versus other physiotherapy treatment. Results: Seven trials were included. For acute low back pain, segmental stabilizing exercises are equally effective in reducing short-term disability and pain and more effective in reducing long-term recurrence of low back pain than treatment by GP. For chronic low back pain, segmental stabilizing exercises are, in the short and long term, more effective than GP treatment and may be as effective as other physiotherapy treatments in reducing disability and pain. There is limited evidence that segmental stabilizing exercises additional to other physiotherapy treatment are equally effective for pain and more effective concerning disability than other physiotherapy treatments alone. There is no evidence concerning subacute low back pain. Conclusion: For low back pain, segmental stabilizing exercises are more effective than treatment by GP but they are not more effective than other physiotherapy interventions.
