Ils ont créé une sorte de soupe numérique primitive, permettant aux données aléatoires d'interagir librement entre elles, sans règles préétablies ni impulsions extérieures. Un peu comme des molécules, ces données ont été laissées à elles-mêmes pour exécuter leur propre code et interagir avec leur environnement immédiat. Après plusieurs millions de générations, les chercheurs ont observé la création d'éléments plus complexes capables de s'autorépliquer. Bien que cela ne constitue pas véritablement de la vie, cette autoréplication spontanée montre que le code peut trouver des solutions pour se complexifier de manière autonome, rappelant le processus de création des organismes vivants.Les scientifiques de Google estiment que cette étude pourrait offrir de nouvelles perspectives sur les voies menant à l'origine de la vie. Ils suggèrent qu'une puissance de calcul plus élevée permettrait d'obtenir des résultats encore plus avancés et complexes en matière d'autoréplication numérique. Most people won't have heard of INTERCAL, but I think the fake out “normal” is enough to draw their attention. Also, I find “computer programming” funny. Ivan and Jimmy will both be there, though—late breaking news—neither of them will be giving a talk. (“Rocket Rules” apply, if you know what that is.) [Will anyone actually know what “Rocket Rules” is? Will they search for it? That would be sort of embarrassing for me.] If Ivan were to give a programming talk, getting some flood-contaminated gear from DEC or a PDP-11 to use as staging / set dressing might be a challenge. [Yay, another retread of my personal history. Maybe instead of dredging up my past I should be the sort of person who makes new things, like, ever.] Meowmeowbeenz [Gah this show hasn't aged well. At least I'm sticking to the whole “high-brow + low-brow” personal identity by including the reference to it. [Is “meta” low-brow at this point?]] There's lots of talk about esolangs (esoteric programming languages), so it's worth linking the Esolang Wiki. [I worry that we spent too much time focusing on surface syntax. Jimmy tried to get us to talk about the beautifully-weird semantics within INTERCAL, but we never fully went there. I'm sure some people will complain about this lack of depth. Not looking forward to that.] In particular, Brainfuck, which Jimmy adorably refers to as “BF” because he's a polite gentleman and Ivan is 2% South Park. [Laughing at my own joke.] Also, Shakespeare and Shakespeare: vaulting ambition, Out, damned spot, both from the Scottish play (you don't know where I am, don't @ me). [Why are these in the show notes? Am I trying to signal some sort of theatre-literacy? Who cares?] “COMEFROM was eventually implemented in the C-INTERCAL variant of the esoteric programming language INTERCAL” [Considering that this was such a non-element in the original paper, it's weird that it became such a cornerstone of the episode. “What if we recreated the spirit of the paper in the podcast itself” is a tall order, so I guess we did what we could with what we had. Also, I bet someone is going to object that the paper and language aren't actually very meta, especially not multiple layers deep, to which I'll reply: we all bring the flavour of our mouth to the soup we taste.] Exapunks… Yeah! [AoC is the exception that proves the rule: there are no high-quality programming podcasts. They all seem so low-effort, made by people who don't respect the listener's time and attention. Or they're aping the high-budget NPR style, with no personality. Also, audio quality is all over the map. Also, just the worst garbage ads and theme music, all of them! I wonder if it's just a cost-benefit time/energy tradeoff, or maybe people don't know how to do better? I wonder what we could do to help raise the bar, without opening ourselves up to a bunch of “well I don't like your podcast either” presumed competitiveness.] The video Screens in Screens in Screens is fantastic, and the sort of thing that deserves our support. Aber man hätte es schon ahnen können, als Irmgard Lumpini von Frau Bergs aktuellem Buch „GRM: Brainfuck.“ zwar geflasht war, aber trotz tiefschwarzer Dystopie sehr angetan. In dieser Folge soll es um das neue Buch der Fantasy und Science-Fiction-Autorin N.K. Jemisin gehen – ein herrlicher Brainfuck, der eine behämmert klingende Idee zu einer bunten und mitreißenden Erzählungen macht. „Die Wächterinnen von New York“ kam vor ein paar Wochen im Tropen Verlag raus und wurde übersetzt von Benjamin Mildner. N.K. Jemisin lässt darin die Avatare der „five boroughs“ von New York als Avatare auferstehen und verkauft uns damit eine Idee, die erst einmal ein wenig behämmert klingt: In ihrer Welt gibt es Städte, die im wahrsten Wortsinn zum Leben erwachen. Die einen gewissen Prozess an kulturellem Wachstum brauchen, um diesen Status zu erreichen. Sobald dieser erreicht ist, wählt die Stadt einen Avatar aus – bei einer riesigen Weltstadt wie New York gibt es außerdem Verkörperungen der einzelnen Stadtteile. Sie müssen die Stadt gegen den giftigen Einfluss einer dunklen Entität verteidigen, die wie eine Hommage an H.P. Lovecraft erscheint – es ist ein seit Jahrtausenden tobender Kampf. Gewinnt die dunkle Seite, sterben die Städte auf spektakuläre und dramatische Weise: historisch Beispiele in Jemisins Welt sind zum Beispiel Pompeei und Atlantis. „Die Wächterinnen von New York“ ist nicht nur sehr gutes, fantasievolles Entertainment, sondern ebenso eine leidenschaftliche Hymne auf das kulturelle Herz einer Stadt. Das nämlich nicht im Stadtmarketing und den fancy Museen schlägt, sondern in den bunten, diversen, wild wuchernden, kreativen, stets ums Überleben kämpfenden Teilen der Stadt. Man spürt in diesem Buch in jeder Zeile, dass NK Jemisin einen Heidenspaß hatte, auf diese Weise über New York zu schreiben – eine Stadt, in der sie einen Großteil ihres Lebens verbringt und verbrachte. Bob understands that AGI is an imminent existential threat. Bob thinks AI alignment is not only urgent and pressing but also tractable. Bob is a second-year student at Ivy League U studying computer science. Meet Charlie. Charlie is an L4 engineer at Google. He works on applied machine learning for the Maps team. He is very good at what he does. Each of our characters has approached you for advice. Their terminal goals might be murky, but they all empathize deeply with the AI alignment problem. They'd like to do their part in decreasing X-risk. You give Alice the following advice: It's statistically unlikely that you're the sort of genius who'd be highly productive without at least undergraduate training. At a better college, you will not only receive better training and have better peers; you will also have access to opportunities and signalling advantages that will make you much more useful. I understand your desire to change the world, and it's a wonderful thing. If you'd just endure the boredom of school for a few more years, you'll have much more impact. Right now, MIRI wouldn't even hire you. I mean, look at the credentials most AI researchers have! Statistically, you are not Eliezer. You give Bob the following advice: Graduating is a very good signal. A IvyLeagueU degree carries a lot of signalling value! Have you gotten an internship yet? It's great that you are looking into alignment work, but it's also important that you take care of yourself. It's only your second year. If the college environment does not seem optimal to you, you can certainly change that. Do you want study tips? Listen to me. Do not drop out. All those stories you hear about billionaires who dropped out of college might be somewhat relevant if you actually wanted to be a billionaire. If you're optimizing for social impact, you do not do capricious things like that. Remember, you must optimize for expected value. Seriously consider grad school, since it's a great place to improve your skills at AI Alignment work. You give Charlie the following advice: Quit your job and go work on AI Alignment. I understand that Google is a fun place to work, but seriously, you're not living your values. But it is too late, because Charlie has already been injected with a deadly neurotoxin which removes his soul from his skeleton. He is now a zombie, only capable of speaking to promo committees. You want geniuses, yet you despise those who attempt to attain genius. It seems blatantly obvious to you that the John von Neumanns and Paul Erdoses of the world do not beg for advice on internet forums. They must have already built a deep confidence in their capabilities from fantastical childhood endeavors. And even if Alice wrote a working C++ compiler in Brainfuck at 15 years old, it's unlikely that she can solve such a momentous problem alone. Better to keep your head down. Follow the career track. Deliberate. Plan. Optimize. So with your reasonable advice, Alice went to Harvard and Bob graduated with honors. All of them wish to incrementally contribute to the important project of building safe AI. They're capable people now. They understand jargon like prosaic alignment and myopic models. They're good programmers, though paralyzed whenever ...

Sebastian Nübling inszeniert die Kooperation mit dem Hamburger Thalia-Theater. Die Inszenierung bleibe allerdings weit hinter den Möglichkeiten des Textes zurück, so Theaterkritiker Stefan Keim. Zu sehen sei eine Technikshow, eine nette, apokalyptische Party mit der Botschaft, dass die Lage zwar hoffnungslos ist, aber nicht ernst.

Heute hauen wir euch mal einen ziemlichen Brainfuck um die Ohren: Einen apokalyptischen Science-Fiction-Roman, der den Mythos von Jeanne D'Arc in das Jahr 2049 überführt. Es ist das erste ins Deutsche übersetze Buch der amerikanischen Autorin Lidia Yuknavitch, die in den Staaten schon lange als eine der wildesten und interessantesten Stimmen ihrer Generation gilt. Wird Zeit, dass man das auch hierzulande checkt. Das Buch dürfte jedenfalls allen gefallen, die Science Fiction mögen, auf Weltuntergänge stehen und gerne Bücher über große Heldinnen lesen.

Sibylle ist Autorin - ihr letztes Projekt, "GRM. Brainfuck", ist ein Buch über Grime und dafür ist sie für eine Zeit nach London gezogen. Allerdings kann sie auch prima ohne Musik leben. Grime ist ein Hip Hop Genre aus England, welches sie fasziniert und analysiert. Aber auch amerikanische Rapper haben es früh Sibylle den Einstieg in die Hip Hop Welt beschert: Eminem und Dr. Dre. - die Mischung aus irrer Energie, Hass und Liebe macht's für Sibylle. Das geht nur wenn man jung ist und das fasziniert sie. Da sie aus dem Osten kommt, begann sie ihren Musik Geschmack sehr spät zu entwickeln. Ihre Antwort auf alles ist eigentlich „Energie“, denn das ist es was auf Konzerten bei Hip Hop ihrer Meinung nach anders ist, die besondere Art von Verbundenheit.

Wie entschieden multimedial Sibylle Berg das Kulturformat „Lesung“ angeht, bewies die Wahlschweizerin unlängst bei ihrer Lesung auf Kampnagel. Ihr neuer Roman „GRM. Brainfuck“, der derzeit auf der „Spiegel“-Bestsellerliste steht, wurde dort in einer Art szenischen Lesung vorgestellt. Die Hauptrolle spielte allerdings ein erst 14-jähriger Grime-Künstler. Ein Rapper, der seinen Text so rücksichtslos rausrotzte wie die Schriftstellerin ihre Romansätze: „GRM“ ist ein schmutziger, kühler, radikaler Roman vom Ende der Welt. Abendblatt-Redakteur Thomas Andre und Rainer Moritz, der Leiter des Hamburger Literaturhauses, sprechen in der zweiten Folge des Podcasts „Next Book Please“ über ihn. „GRM“ ist eine von vier literarischen Neuerscheinungen, derer sich das Duo diesmal annimmt. Mit Anselm Nefts „Die bessere Geschichte“ und Leïla Slimanis „All das zu verlieren“ stehen gleich zwei Titel auf ihrer Liste, die im weitesten Sinne von sexuellen Obsessionen handeln. Anselm Neft greift in seinem Roman die Missbrauchsskandale von reformpädagogischen Einrichtungen auf. Für seinen Romanhelden stellt sich die im Verlaufe der eindringlichen und auf zwei Erzählebenen spielenden Handlung die Frage, ob er selbst zum Täter wird. Die französische Erfolgsautorin Slimani behandelt in ihrem Debüt, das erst jetzt auf Deutsch erscheint, ebenfalls im Sexuellen gründende Dämonen. Ihre Protagonistin ist das, was man früher eine Nymphomanin nannte. Heute sagt man vielleicht ganz nüchtern „Sexsucht“, so oder so ist die Romanfigur Adèle eine tragische Gestalt, die ihre gesamte Existenz aufs Spiel setzt, um dem Trieb genüge zu tun. Was den guten Ruf angeht, den ein anerkannter und erfolgreicher Schauspieler derzeit unter Umständen aufs Spiel setzt, muss derzeit dringend über Axel Milberg geredet werden. Der „Tatort“-Darsteller legt dieser Tage mit „Düsternbrook“ sein erstes Buch vor, den Roman seiner Kindheit quasi. Ob dieser gelungen ist und ob Schauspieler überhaupt zwingend unter die Schriftsteller gehen sollten - darum geht es in der aktuellen Folge von Next Book Please.

Don't miss our interview with This episode was brought to you by Headlines My two year journey to becoming an OS Developer (http://zinascii.com/2016/going-to-joyent.html) A blog post by Ryan Zezeski about how he ended doing OS Development instead of working on application We have featured his posts before, including The illumos SYSCALL Handler (http://zinascii.com/2016/the-illumos-syscall-handler.html) It started in the summer of 2014: I had just left Basho after 3.5 years of working on Riak, when I decided I wanted to become an OS developer. I purchased Solaris Internals, cloned illumos-gate, fired up cscope, and got to work. I hardly knew any C, x86 might as well have been Brainfuck, and, frankly, I knew shit about operating systems. But I was determined. I've always learned best by beating my head against something until it makes sense. I'm not a fast learner; I'm persistent. What others have in ability I make up for in effort. And when it comes to OS internals it's all about work ethic. The more you look, the more you realize it's just another program. The main difference being: it's the program all the other programs run on. My strategy: to pick something, anything, that looked interesting, and write a post describing how it works. I wrote several of these posts in 2014 and 2015. More important, it put me in touch with Roger Faulkner: the creator of truss(1), the Solaris process model, and the real /proc filesystem. At the time I didn't like my interaction with Roger. He explained, in what I would later find out to be his typical gruff manner, that I was wrong; so I concluded he is a prick. But over the years I realized that I was being a brat—he was trying to teach me something and I let my ego get in the way. I've come to view that interaction as a blessing. I interacted with one of the greats, a mentor of my mentor's mentor (a Great Great Mentor). A couple of weeks later something even more surreal happened, at illumos Day 2014. Bryan Cantrill was the last speaker of the day. One of my mentors and someone I admire greatly. He was there to regale us with the story of Joyent's resurrection of lx-branded zones: Linux system call emulation on top of the illumos kernel. But before he would do that he decided to speak about me! I couldn't believe it. I was so overwhelmed that I don't remember most of what he said. I was too busy flipping shit—Bryan Cantrill is on stage, in front of other kernel developers I look up to, saying my name. I was in a dream. It turns out, unknown to me at the time, that he wrote the POSIX queue code for both Solaris and QNX, which I wrote about. He compared me to the great expository technical writers Elliott Organick and Richard Stevens. And it was at this moment that I knew I could do this: I could become an OS developer. Never underestimate the effect kind words can have on someone that looks up to you. I don't know what specific things I'm going to work on, but I'm sure it will push me to the limit. I look forward to the challenge. *** Version 1.0 of the Lumina Desktop released (https://lumina-desktop.org/version-1-0-0-released/) After 4 years of development, Lumina Desktop has now hit version 1.0! This release brings with it a slew of new features and support: Completely customizable interface! Rather than having to learn how to use a new layout, change the desktop to suit you instead! Simple shortcuts for any application! The “favorites” system makes it easy to find and launch applications at any time. Extremely lightweight! Allows applications to utilize more of your system hardware and revitalizes older systems! Multiple-monitor support! Each monitor is treated as an independent entity – making it great for presentation systems which use a temporary monitor or for workstations which utilize an array of monitors for various tasks. While originally developed on PC-BSD, it already has been ported to a variety of different platforms, including OpenBSD, DragonFly, NetBSD, Debian and Gentoo Lumina has become the defacto desktop environment for TrueOS (Formerly PC-BSD), and looks like will provide a solid framework to continue growing desktop features. *** n2k16 hackathon report: Ken Westerback on dhclient, bridges, routing and more (http://undeadly.org/cgi?action=article&sid=20160804200232) Next up, we have a report from Ken Westerback talking about the recent OpenBSD hackathon in Prague He starts by telling us about the work in bpf: First order of business, stsp@'s weird setup involving bridges and multiple dhclient clients. A bit of bpf(4) programming to restrict dhclient to handling ethernet packets unicast to its interface worked. Cool. Unfortunately it turned out some lazy dhcp servers always use ethernet broadcasts just because some lesser, non-OpenBSD clients ignore unicast packets until they have configured IP. Classic chicken and egg. So this was backed out just before 6.0. Sigh. Next up, he talks about an idea he had on the flight over, specifically with regard to how DHCP leases are stored, and how keeping the SSID information with them could speed up re-connection times, by only trying leases for current SSID's connected. After a day or so of hacking, it was working! However for $REASONS it was shelved for post 6.0, bummer! He then discusses an on-going project with Peter Hessler on passing along relevant PIDs in response to routing messages generated by kernel from ioctl events. This is something they've been hacking at, in order to allow dhclient to recognize its own routing messages. Sounds like they are both still works-in-progress. However, Ken did get something in for 6.0: Diving back into dhclient code I discovered that in situations where multiple offers were received the unused offers were not being declined and discarded. Despite a clear comment saying that's what was being done! Thus dhclient might gradually use up more and more memory. And possibly be retrying offers that should have been discarded. The fix for this did make 6.0! Yay! In Memoriam Roger Faulkner (https://www.usenix.org/memoriam-roger-faulkner) USENIX has re-released Roger Faulkner's original paper on /proc as a free download The UNIX community recently lost one of its original pioneers, Roger Faulkner, whom one commenter described as “The godfather of post-AT&T UNIX” In his memory, the USENIX group as re-released his original paper on the /proc file-system from 1991. Roger worked in many area's of UNIX, however the process file system /proc was his special baby. “/proc began as a debugger interface superseding ptrace(2) but has evolved into a general interface to the process model.” The original /proc only had a file for each process, not a directory. "Data may be transferred from or to any valid locations in the process's address space by applying lseek(2) to position the file at the virtual address of interest followed by read(2) or write(2)." Processes could be controlled using IOCTLs on the file As the USENIX article states: Roger believed that terrible things were sometimes required to create beautiful abstractions, and his trailblazing work on /proc embodies this burden: the innards may be delicate and nasty ("vile," as Roger might say in his distinguished Carolinian accent)—but the resulting abstractions are breathtaking in their power, scope and robustness. RIP Roger, and thanks for the wonderful UNIX legacy you've left us all. The first, well allow you to set the date and time. Often on computers that have been in storage, or some embedded type devices that have no RTC, the date will be wildly wrong, and ntpd will refuse to run until the date is correctly set. This feature makes it easy to enter the date and time using dialog(1) The second menu, inspired by the existing ‘services' menu, offers a number of ‘hardening' options This menu allows users to easily enable a number of security features, including: Hide processes running as other users/groups Disable reading the kernel message buffer and debugging processes for unprivileged users Randomize the PID of newly created processes Enable the stack guard Erase /tmp at boot Disable remote syslog Disable sendmail All of these options are off by default, so that an install done with the installer will be the same as an install from source, or an upgrade. A number of these options are candidates to become on-by-default in the future, so the hope is that this menu will get more users to test these features and find any negative interactions with applications or general use, so they can be fixed. *** Rawrite32: the NetBSD image writing tool (https://www.netbsd.org/~martin/rawrite32/) Martin of the NetBSD project has released a new version of his USB imaging tool, rawrite32 For those who've not used this tool before, it is a Windows Application that allows writing NetBSD images directly to USB media (other other disk media) This update brings with it support for writing .xz file, and binary signing This may come in handy for writing other OS images to memory sticks as well, especially for those locked into a windows environment who need to switch. *** ZFS-Snap-Diff -- A pretty interface for viewing what changed after a ZFS snapshot (https://github.com/j-keck/zfs-snap-diff) There are lots of nice little utilities to help create and maintain your ZFS snapshots. However today we have something unique to look at, ‘zfs-snap-diff'. What makes it unique, is that it ships with a built-in golang / angularjs GUI for snapshot management It looks very powerful, including a built-in diff utility, so you can even see the changes in text-files, in addition to downloading files, restoring old versions and more.
