Today's Headlines: We're ending the week on a truly chaotic note. Texas Senator John Cornyn got the FBI involved to help track down state Democrats who fled to avoid a rushed redistricting vote—one that would give Republicans five extra seats, just because Trump said they should have them. Trump's also pushing for early redistricting in other red states and floated a new census that would exclude undocumented immigrants—never mind what the Constitution says. In other news, he signed an order demanding colleges hand over race-based admissions data, and the Air Force is cutting off early retirement benefits for transgender service members. Additionally, Trump now wants your 401(k) to dabble in crypto and real estate, and he's nominating an aide to the Fed who's big on lowering interest rates. Finally, Apple CEO Tim Cook gave Trump a weird gold iPhone trophy, VP JD Vance's river was allegedly raised for his birthday kayak trip, Israel confirmed it plans to take full control of Gaza, and Eli Lilly released promising results from a study of its new weight loss pill. Netanyahu's latest move isn't subtle. He wants Israel to take full control of the Gaza Strip — dismantle Hamas, free hostages, and install a non-Hamas civilian government. On paper, it sounds like a decisive endgame. In practice, it's a minefield. The UN, the UK, and even some of Israel's own military leaders are warning this could be catastrophic, both humanitarian and legal. We're talking about tens of thousands of troops pushing into Gaza City, uprooting a million residents to the south, and expanding a controversial aid network that's already replacing the UN in distribution.I can't say I'm shocked. From the moment October 7th happened, this was always one of the plausible end states — Hamas removed from power entirely. What I didn't anticipate was Iran's weakened state factoring into the timing, or the fact that Israel might see that as a green light to act more aggressively. The trouble is, any operation that moves into the areas where hostages are held risks killing them outright. That's going to split Israel politically, because it forces a brutal question: if you were willing to risk their deaths now, why didn't you do it immediately after the attack? And that's before you even get to the problem of what comes after. Hamas leaders can't make a deal and then just go live quietly in Gaza. They'd have to leave. But where? You don't walk away from martyrdom rhetoric on Monday and spend Tuesday at Mario World in Orlando. Gaza under Hamas isn't just a state — it's a criminal syndicate, and that makes any negotiated exit almost impossible. Which means, if this plan goes forward, it's going to be bloody, messy, and controversial from the start.Trump's Putin PlayTrump's continuing to signal he'll meet with Putin “very soon,” possibly in the UAE. Early talk was that Zelensky would be part of a three-way summit, but Trump has apparently dropped that stipulation. Predictably, the Kremlin is treating this like a win, while critics warn it could legitimize Russia's aggression and undermine NATO. That's the Beltway framing. From what I'm hearing, it's not that simple. Trump has actually been harder on Putin lately than some people realize — moving nuclear subs into range, green-lighting sanctions, and generally signaling that he's done being strung along. This isn't 2018 Helsinki. It might be Trump testing whether Putin will only make a deal after feeling genuine pressure.None of this means a breakthrough is coming. It probably isn't. But it does mean Trump wants to own the narrative — that he's the guy who ends wars through direct negotiation. And until Ukraine or Gaza is resolved, his foreign policy record will feel incomplete. I think he knows that, and I think that's why this meeting's on the table at all.FBI Assisting in Locating Texas DemsIn Texas, the Democratic walkout drama is back, with Senator John Cornyn confirming the FBI is helping locate them. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker is playing host, calling the state's collection of Democrats “refugees,” which is absurd. They're not refugees. They're political props in his own long-term campaign plans. Here's the thing — if you believe in what you're doing, you should want to get arrested. That would make this story bigger, not smaller. It's the most potent form of protest they've got. Instead, they're hiding out in hotels, funded by Beto O'Rourke's PAC, doing nothing to energize the very voters they're supposedly defending. They could be knocking on doors in the districts that are about to be carved up, rallying people who are about to lose representation. If they got dragged back to Austin by Texas Rangers in the middle of that, it'd be front-page news. Instead, we've got photo ops in Chicago. It's the same mistake they made in 2021 — swapping a real fight for a symbolic one, and then acting surprised when nothing changes.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:03:48 - Interview with Michael Cohen and Tom Merritt00:21:29 - Update00:21:57 - Gaza00:29:30 - Trump and Putin00:32:41 - Texas Dems00:36:07 - Interview with Michael Cohen and Tom Merritt (con't)01:01:12 - Wrap-up This is a public episode. EPISODE 93 DETAILS Cow Prices Double & Screwworm Threatens Texas Weigh Up Cow Prices Are Up Weigh-up cow prices have increased dramatically over the last two years and are now currently at prices that are close to double the average price of what they were just 3 years ago in 2022.  To put this in perspective, the average annual weigh-up cow prices per CWT were $60.05 in 2020, $65.40 in 2021 and $76.12 in 2022, as reported by USDA Market News at the Joplin Regional Stockyards in Missouri.  For folks who are marketing home raised cows that are more than two years of age, make sure that the income from these cows is identified as capital gains income when it is being reported for tax purposes.  This is especially important this year because many cow-calf producers will also have excellent income from the sale of weaned calves and yearlings. Capital gains income is not subject to self-employment tax, and the federal capital gains tax rate will be lower than the ordinary income tax rate for the same level of earnings. Make sure you consult with your tax professional on all income tax law and liabilities. The screwworm was first reported in Mexico in November and has steadily made its way north since then. The most northern recent reported case was in the state of Veracruz, Mexico, which is about 370 miles south of McAllen, Texas, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, says the screwworm flies could devastate the state's cattle industry if it crosses onto U.S. soil. Cornyn says an outbreak could cost Texas livestock producers approximately $1 billion and cost the general economy $3.7 billion. Last week, 175 groups sent a letter to Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins and the U.S. House and Senate in support of building a sterile fly facility in the U.S. Among the national groups that signed the letter were the American Farm Bureau, Livestock Marketing Association, National Beef Cattlemen's Association and the National Milk Producers Association. Turns out it did happen after all. These people couldn't keep their story straight if you stapled it to them. Meanwhile, in Texas, the redistricting fight is hitting a dangerous new level. Senator John Cornyn says the FBI will help track down Democratic lawmakers who left the state to block the vote. Legal? Constitutional? Sounds like a hard no, but apparently, that's just a minor detail to the GOP. Tonight, the one and only Beto O'Rourke joins us to break it all down. Join Jim and Greg for Wednesday's 3 Martini Lunch as they examine Major League Baseball's return to Atlanta for the All-Star Game four years after Democrats pressured the league to pull the event over Georgia's election integrity law. They also dig into the ridiculously slow wildfire recovery efforts in Los Angeles County and break down what could be a wild U.S. Senate race in Texas next year.First, they're glad to see the all-star game back in Georgia, where it was originally scheduled in 2021 before Commissioner Rob Manfred moved it under political pressure. Democrats claimed Georgia's election law was “Jim Crow 2.0,” but two election cycles later, record turnout disproves those claims. Jim and Greg ask whether Manfred, the media, or top Democrats will ever acknowledge how wrong they were, or apologize to Gov. Brian Kemp for likening him to segregationists and the confederacy?Next, they fume as little more than a hundred building permits have been issued in Los Angeles County in the six months since the devastating wildfires. Jim says this is a perfect example of how the blue state, big government approach to problems grinds progress to a halt and how Mayor Karen Bass and Gov. Gavin Newsom have failed. Greg offers insights on why the media won't criticize Newsom and Bass over this. Finally, they look ahead to the 2026 Texas U.S. Senate race, where new polling suggests Rep. Jasmine Crockett could dominate the Democratic primary if she runs. The GOP primary has plenty of its own drama as Sen. John Cornyn and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton battle for the nomination. Many in the MAGA base are disappointed in Cornyn but Paxton brings his own baggage, including a very public divorce that was just announced. Please visit our great sponsors:Stop putting off those doctors' appointments and go to https://zocdoc.com/3ML to find and instantly book a top rated doctor today.  If your business can't adapt in real-time, you're in a world of hurt.  Get the free e-book “Navigating Global Trade: 3 Insights for Leaders” from NetSuite by Oracle.  Download today at https://NetSuite.com/MARTINI No missed calls, no missed customers with OpenPhone. January 6th & Trump Assassination Attempt HAUNT American Politics + Showdown Between Newsom & Texas Over Gerrymandering

Chuck Todd begins with a rant about his beloved Washington Nationals before pivoting to Trump strong-arming congressman Zach Nunn into running for reelection and Texas into holding a mid decade restricting process to try and maintain control of the house. He weighs in on California governor Gavin Newsom's threat to gerrymander his state in response to Texas and why that plan may not work. He also surveys the state of several 2026 races. Then, Chuck is joined by renowned CBS News Capitol Hill correspondent Scott MacFarlane who delivers an unflinching analysis of American politics in the post-January 6th era and recounts his harrowing experience of being in attendance during the assassination attempt of Donald Trump. MacFarlane, drawing from his extensive experience covering the insurrection trials and congressional proceedings, explores how the events of January 6th continue to reshape the political landscape, from Trump's recent blanket pardons to the ongoing divisions within the Republican Party. He provides insider perspectives on the Secret Service's challenges during campaign season, the diverse backgrounds of January 6th defendants, and the broader implications of political violence in American democracy. The conversation spans critical topics including the decline of local journalism, the judiciary's politicization, and the increasingly siloed information ecosystem that defines modern American politics. MacFarlane offers candid insights into the DOJ's handling of January 6th prosecutions under Merrick Garland, the death threats faced by trial witnesses, and how Trump's survival of the Butler assassination attempt reinforced his supporters' belief in divine intervention. The discussion also touches on contemporary challenges facing journalists, from the pressure to develop personal brands to declining morale in newsrooms, while examining ongoing political realignments and the future of democratic institutions in America. Finally, Chuck answers listeners' questions in the “Ask Chuck” segment about Trump trying to rescind some of Biden's late-term pardons, Gavin Newsom's political evolution and why Dan Osborne is running for senate rather than governor in Nebraska.Timeline:(Timestamps may vary based on advertisements)00:00 Introduction00:45 James Wood didn't have competent pitching in HR derby02:00 Lack of summer sports programming04:45 Trump has unprecedented control over the Republican party07:30 Zach Nunn flirting with run with Iowa governor or switching seats09:30 Trump forced Nunn into seeking reelection 10:30 Trump strong arming Texas into mid decade redistricting11:45 Additional gerrymandering is risky for Texas Republicans13:30 Gavin Newsom threatens to gerrymander CA in response to Texas15:15 Newsom's rhetoric may not match the political reality16:30 Republicans are trying to rig their house majority17:30 Donald Trump is dictating all of these actions18:15 Trump is trying to destroy Thomas Massie for no vote on BBB19:15 Republicans risk candidates being tied to an unpopular president21:15 Democrats are grappling with whether to fight fire with fire23:15 Gerrymandering fights are popping up around the country24:30 The White House is obsessed with holding the house26:00 Trumpworld will stoke fear of impeachment to juice turnout27:00 NRSC has gone all-in on stopping Ken Paxton in Texas28:15 John Cornyn could walk away and back Wesley Hunt30:30 Susan Collins is raising money as if she's seeking reelection31:30 Jonathan Bush may run for governor in Maine32:45 Mary Peltola may run for governor or senate in Alaska35:15 The PGA Tour announcing a new tournament at Trump Doral38:00 Scott MacFarlane joins the Chuck ToddCast! 38:30 Scott's origin story 40:30 Local news has been decimated in recent years 42:30 People have the closest connection with local news outlets 44:30 Local news should be targeting millennial parents 46:30 Why was the response to the Butler assassination attempt so muted? 48:30 Secret service is stretched thin during campaign season 49:30 Was the secret service underresourced? 51:00 Scott felt the vibe was "off" at the event 53:00 If Trump hadn't survived, the crowd would have attacked media 54:15 Trump surviving created a divine intervention belief in his supporters 57:00 Many J6ers admitted "they don't know what got into them" 58:30 The J6ers are an incredibly diverse group of people 59:45 Only two J6ers were acquitted 1:01:00 The electorate sees almost everything through a red/blue lens 1:02:30 The senate broke the judiciary 1:03:30 There's only ONE apologetic January 6th defendant 1:05:00 Republicans now in congress wouldn't condemn J6 1:07:15 The blanket pardon was Trump condoning political violence 1:08:45 Have all the DOJ prosecutors who worked on J6 cases been fired? 1:10:00 People who testified at J6 trials have received death threats 1:12:30 Merrick Garland slow rolled DOJ's J6 prosecutions 1:14:30 It's surprising how quickly Republicans came back to Trump after J6 1:15:30 If the senate voted to convict, we'd have a president Ron DeSantis 1:18:00 Mitch McConnell's surrender handed the keys over to the MAGA wing 1:19:30 The information ecosystem is incredibly siloed 1:21:15 The public dismisses Trump's corruption as "they all do it" 1:23:00 January 6th is still ongoing, it's just taken different forms 1:24:30 What to make of the ongoing Epstein files saga? 1:26:15 Trump's people fanned the flames of Epstein conspiracies 1:28:00 You can't release names of Epstein associates without proof of a crime 1:30:00 America's political realignment is fascinating and potentially disastrous 1:31:15 Is Pam Bondi's job safe? 1:32:30 Trump flexing his power over the city of Washington D.C. 1:34:00 Muriel Bowser has handled Trump well 1:35:00 Morale for journalists is low and unsettled 1:36:00 Journalists are now required to have a personal brand 1:37:30 Every journalist wants to be Woodward and Bernstein 1:39:30 The state of D.C. professional sports1:40:15 Chuck's thoughts on the interview with Scott MacFarlane 1:40:30 Ask Chuck 1:40:35 What to make of Trump trying to undo Biden's late term pardons? 1:45:45 Will Gavin Newsom's "pivot to the middle" work in middle America? 1:49:30 What is the advantage of Dan Osborne running for senate over governor?

Meet my friends, Clay Travis and Buck Sexton! If you love Verdict, the Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show might also be in your audio wheelhouse. Politics, news analysis, and some pop culture and comedy thrown in too. Here’s a sample episode recapping four Thursday takeaways. Give the guys a listen and then follow and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. Superman Fans Go After Clay A fiery and humorous critique of Hollywood’s political messaging, with a sharp focus on the controversy surrounding the new Superman movie directed by James Gunn. The hosts open with a lighthearted jab at CNN’s Wolf Blitzer and his infamous Jeopardy performance, using it as a springboard to discuss media credibility and public perception. The bulk of the hour centers on the Superman movie backlash, where Clay Travis criticizes Gunn’s framing of Superman as an immigrant and the broader trend of injecting progressive politics into iconic characters. Travis argues that Superman should remain an apolitical symbol of universal values like truth and justice, not a vehicle for modern immigration debates. The hosts explore whether Superman is better understood as an asylum seeker rather than an immigrant, given his extraterrestrial origins and adoption by American parents. OH Rep. Jim Jordan Congressman Jim Jordan tout the recently passed Big Beautiful Bill’s middle-class tax cuts, investment in border security, and pro-growth reforms. They argue it will stimulate job creation, repatriate manufacturing, and shield Americans from inflation-driven tax hikes. The show also covers the evolving landscape of college athletics, focusing on bipartisan legislation to regulate NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) compensation. Congressman Jordan outlines a proposed federal framework to protect student-athletes, enforce agent transparency, and establish eligibility standards—aiming to bring order to what he calls a “broken” system. The interview wraps with President Trump’s rumored plans for a UFC fight on the White House lawn. TX Sen. John Cornyn A sobering update from Texas Senator John Cornyn on the devastating Hill Country flooding, which has claimed over 120 lives and left 170 missing. The hosts and Senator Cornyn explore the urgent need for improved flood warning systems and emergency preparedness, especially for nighttime disasters. Listeners are encouraged to support Texas flood victims through fundraising efforts promoted on ClayandBuck.com. The conversation shifts to a shocking ambush on federal law enforcement officers in Alvarado, Texas, where 11 suspects have been charged. Senator Cornyn condemns the attack and links it to escalating anti-police rhetoric, emphasizing the need for strong support of ICE and law enforcement agencies. Illegal immigration and border security take center stage as Cornyn praises the Trump administration’s efforts to restore control at the southern border. He highlights the renewed morale among Border Patrol agents and the shift from humanitarian overload to national security enforcement. Run Jasmine, Run! The high-stakes 2026 Texas Senate race. Senator Cornyn discusses potential challengers, including Ken Paxton and Jasmine Crockett, and the strategic importance of maintaining Republican control in a politically pivotal state. The hosts speculate on whether President Trump will weigh in on the primary, underscoring the national implications of the race.
