Brian Mesko was born into a family of musicians, and raised in Little Rock, AR, Mesko began piano lessons at age 8, moving to guitar at age 10. By 12 he was playing drums, and he picked up the bass at age 14. As a teen Brian was gigging professionally, and even played drums on a short tour in Turkey at age 18. While still in high school he studied Jazz Theory & Ensemble at UALR under Michael Carenbauer (who studied under Pat Metheny at Berklee). Taking these credits on to MTSU, Brian completed a bachelor's degree in Recording Industry. Mesko lived in the Nashville area from 1997 – 2005 and played with such international jazz greats as Les McCann, Tony Monaco, Dr. Lonnie Smith, John Jorgensen and Jeff Coffin. After moving to central Virginia in 2005, Brian has been privileged to work with such jazz artists as Robert Jospe, Butch Taylor, Dane Alderson, John D'earth, Bobby Read, Charles Owens, Jonah Kane-West, Liz Barnes, any many more. Brian formed The Rootdowns organ trio with members of Butcher Brown, DJ Williams Projekt, The Big Payback, and Skydog, and they released their debut album, "Songs With Friends" in 2013. In 2015 he started The Danktet, an instrumental trio whose collective influences create a unique blend of jazz, funk, rock, pop, reggae, blues, and R&B. With Australian native Dane Alderson of the Yellow Jackets on bass, and multi-instrumentalist and visual artist Forrest Young on drums, they released their first album, "One Thing Right" in 2016. Aside from his own original projects, Brian has since joined several local projects, playing guitar and/or bass with the Robert Jospe Express, Lenny Marcus, Terry Brown Ascension Project, The Ambassador, Mojo Parker, Melissa and the Growlers, The Meskos Electric Revue, Jstop Latin Soul and Andrew Winn. Brian currently resides with his wife and son in Roanoke, VA working as a session player, performer, and guitar professor/ensemble director at the University of Lynchburg. Tim Martin started his solo career at the ripe age of 16 playing every Friday and Saturday evening at a restaurant called the Olde Tinker Mill Inn. It was a formal dining area upstairs with a pizza and beer meeting place downstairs. He would play for the diners upstairs during dinner then move downstairs for the later, livelier crowd. Building a song list of artists such as James Taylor, Dan Fogelberg, CSN&Y, Eagles, and originals he developed his style. Getting paid 15 dollars a night and free pizza seemed like a good deal to the teenaged Tim. What this job did was help him learn how to be comfortable and entertaining on stage and find what kind of tunes worked with different audiences. 42 years later he is still going strong as ever. Tim has played and still works in clubs, resorts, festivals, concerts, and private functions across southwest Virginia such as The Hotel Roanoke, Wintergreen Resort, Primeland Resort, Snowshow, Greenbrier, Homestead and more. He plays local Roanoke clubs such as The Quarter, Awful Arthurs, Annie Moore's Tavern, Brambleton Deli and more. He has shared the stage and opened for artist such as Savoy Brown, Vern Gosdin, Jonathan Edwards, Ted Nugent, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Little River Band, Southern Culture on The Skids and more. He has released two albums over the years. Real Life Dreamers in 1992 with his duo partner Mark Wilbourn and Wishes in 2000, both all original songs written by Tim.

They were what got her through her formative years having been bullied throughout her childhood. Brittany says: "People always ask me, 'When did you get into music?' My guest today is Randy LeRoy a musician, engineer, A&R, and mastering engineer in Nashville TN and Takoma Park Maryland. A graduate of the recording program at Middle Tennessee State University (also my alma mater) he got his first gig cutting publishing demos on Nashville's “Music Row” in CBS Song's basement studio, editing radio spots on ¼” tape for a company called Starliners and hanging out in small studios around town.  Eventually, he was offered a job with CBS Records as an A&R coordinator and spent time in high-end facilities like Emerald, Stargem, The Dog House, Masterfonics, Sound Shop, Treasure Isle, Studio 19, and even legendary studios like The Record Plant in LA while working for CBS. Randy worked with a variety of the label's many noteworthy artists such as Ray Benson, George Jones, Ricky Van Shelton, Tammy Wynette, Vern Gosdin, and Exile. In 1988 Glenn Meadows at Masterfonics offered him a job as his mastering assistant where Randy learned how to cut reference lacquers, assemble and quality checking masters, and help out engineers during mixing, while mastering small projects on his own.  At Masterfonics he would work alongside notable country music producers like Jimmy Bowen, Tony Brown, James Stroud, Jerry Crutchfield, and Barry Beckett. And in 1991 Randy left Masterfonics to start his own mastering studio, Final Stage Mastering located in Sound Stage Studios on Music Row in Nashville where he worked on more Grammy nominated and winning projects throughout the 1990s and 2000s such as Relient K's Two Lefts Don't Make A Right… but Three Do, Allison Brown's Fair Weather, Nappy Root's Humdinger, and Jamey Johnson's That Lonesome Song, to name a few.  In June of 2010, Randy left Nashville to become the Senior Mastering Engineer at Tonal Park in Takoma Park, MD where he has mastered some of the biggest names in country, bluegrass, folk, Americana, and gospel such as Jim Lauderdale, Bryan Sutton, Jamey Johnson, Dale Ann Bradley, Colin Hay, Kelsey Waldon,  Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen, Gold City, and John Cowan.  including the 2020 Grammy Winning, Michael Cleveland's “Tall Fiddler” and two other Grammy nominated albums in the Best Bluegrass Album category. The Terror Of Tiny Town". Escuchar audio

Crowe & The New South. In this week's episode we're featuring the third and final album on Giant Records for Daryle Singletary: "Ain't It The Truth" (1998). One of the 90s finest and loudest voices for traditional country music, Singletary was only with Giant a short time and was dropped from it's roster following this album's three singles lacklustre chart performance. The year before it's release, Giant Records had been restructured and Singletary was rightly nervous about his position - however, when president Doug Johnson saw the Georgia baritone perform Randy Travis' "1982" and Vern Gosdin's "Do You Believe Me Now" at Nashville's Wildhorse Saloon, he was sold. There was genuine label hype around "Ain't It The Truth" - plenty of speak of a "career record" and "The Note" was supposed to be a big smash, but none of that happened. However, Singletary's third and last record for Giant gives us a taste of what was to come: a hardcore country traditionalist slipping into the shoes of a torchbearer for a cause and an artform, which is what he remained until his terribly sad passing in 2018. Sterling stuff from a legend.

In this week's episode we're featuring Vern Gosdin's final charting album on Columbia: "Out Of My Heart" (1991). Already into his 50s by the time commercial success finally came his way in the 1980s and having suffered his share of setbacks, Gosdin's voice had aged to perfection by 1991. Described as "a walking heartache" by one reviewer, Gosdin's music during his commercial peak relied heavily on haunting background vocals - hearkening back to his history with brother Rex Gosdin in the 60s as some of the West Coast's finest harmony singers. With three divorces to draw from it was true that Gosdin's musical trademark was sorrow. And there are plenty of weepers on this week's feature album. The equally painful "A Month Of Sundays"; "The Song Wrote Itself" (while I cried) and the forlorn "The Bridge I'm Still Building On" have Vern in comfortable territory. But to see the lines on his face when Gosdin sang the exquisite and tragic "The Garden" on The Grand Ole Opry in 1991 is to understand the feeling the man put into his music and how he earned the nickname "The Voice".

Other artists he has produced include George Jones, Chely Wright, Reba McEntire, and Merle Haggard. Buddy Cannon has also been very successful as a songwriter. With country artists Bill Anderson and Jamey Johnson, he wrote the hit song “Give It Away.” He's written and co-written songs for artists as diverse as Vern Gosdin and Willie Nelson. PART TWO - 3:47 mark Paul shares a recent eye-opening musical experience. PART THREE - 8:47 mark Scott calls up Buddy Cannon to learn about how he went from growing up in a family so poor they didn't have a car to becoming a legendary Nashville songwriter and record producer; how he started writing songs out of boredom, the circumstances of getting his first four cuts in two days (all by the CMA's Entertainer of the Year); how his first charting single became a #1 hit; the experience of writing his first song after getting sober; why he had to tell Kenny Chesney he couldn't produce his early albums; the real-life conversation that became his biggest hit; the time he freaked out when his musical hero called him on the phone; and how he and Willie Nelson only co-write via text message. ABOUT BUDDY CANNON Though widely recognized as a respected Nashville record producer, Buddy Cannon initially made his mark in the music business as a songwriter. His first charting single came with Mel Tillis’ recording of “I Believe in You,” which reached #1 on the Billboard country rankings in 1978. He went on to write several Vern Gosdin hits, including the #1 singles “Set ‘Em Up Joe” and “I’m Still Crazy.” George Straight took his “I’ve Come to Expect it from You” to #1, but his greatest success with Straight came in 2006 when “Give It Away” hit the top spot on the charts and went on to be named Song of the Year by both the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music. Additionally, Buddy’s songs have been recorded by Hank Snow, Loretta Lynn, David Allan Coe, Billy Ray Cyrus, George Jones, Gene Watson, Alabama, Bill Anderson, Don Williams, Tracy Byrd, and others. As a producer he’s worked on projects for Sammy Kershaw, Sara Evans, Chely Wright, Craig Morgan, John Michael Montgomery, Reba McEntire, Joe Diffie, Joe Nichols, Jamey Johnson, Randy Travis, Lionel Richie, Eric Clapton, Rhonda Vincent, Dolly Parton, and Merle Haggard. He has produced most of Willie Nelson’s recent albums, and has produced every Kenny Chesney album since 1997. His work with Chesney includes nearly two dozen #1 singles. A multiple Grammy winner, Cannon has also won a CMA and three ACM awards for his production work, including the ACM’s Producer of the Year honor in 2005.

The rugged, loyal man with a mysterious aura, untamed spirit and innocent charm feels as much at home roaming the pastures on his ranch by day as he does setting fire to the stage with an electric performance each night. Playing nearly 70 shows a year, he’s shared the stage with numerous country music legends, including Travis Tritt, John Anderson, Tanya Tucker and has sat across the dining table swapping jokes and exchanging wisdoms with Waylon Jennings—one of his biggest influences (in line with Haggard, Cash, Vern Gosdin and The Eagles). When it comes down to it, the laid-back, real time cowboy is as honest as the day is long. Before a crowd of 40,000 or 400, Kolt Barber does not disappoint. His deep, rich, baritone voice captivates with the drop of every heartfelt note; his dynamic stage show is a must-see attraction. With gumption to give it his all, Kolt Barber delivers a performance as exciting as an 8-second ride. This Is Lou Reid Of The Seldom Scene Playing Mandolin For Me.  After touring 250 annual dates per year with Ricky, Lou decided to come off of the road to slow down a bit and take the lead singer and guitarist position with The Seldom Scene.  Working with John Duffey proved to be one of Lou's career highlights.  As a teenager and learning to be a bluegrass musician, John gave Lou insight into singing that Lou still calls upon today.  After spending six years with the Scene, Lou went off to work in Nashville with some of the top traditional artists of the day, Vince Gill and Vern Gosdin.  He also decided to start his own band with lifelong friend Terry Baucom. The result was Lou Reid, Terry Baucom and Carolina. After putting out two very successful albums, Carolina Blue and Carolina Moon, Terry left the band to pursue his own career.  In 1996, John Duffey passed away suddenly, leaving the Seldom Scene without it's heart and soul.  Ben Eldridge wanted to keep the Scene on the map, and bringing Lou Reid in to take John's place as mandolin player and tenor singer seemed the right thing to do.  Lou has now been with the Seldom Scene for a combined total of 25 years.  He has managed to not only keep his band Carolina current, but thriving.

Dean Dillon Dean was born March 26, 1955. Hailing from the small Tennessee town, Lake City. Located in East Tennessee right outside of Knoxville with a population of around 1,700 people. Dean’s songs would go on to be known all around the world. Dean was inducted into the Nashville songwriters hall of fame in 2002. Dean also has the look of the quintessential cowboy, complete with a mustache that even Sam Elliott would appreciate. Dean wrote “Set em up Joe” recorded by Vern Gosdin which is probably the song most identified with Vern to this day. “Is it raining at your house” is also one of the most popular ballads Gosdin ever recorded. Also wrote Keith Whitley’s first single “Miami My Amy” and the hit “Homecoming 63” Also my favorite Brooks and Dunn song “I’ll never forgive my heart” Kenny Chesney “A lot of things different” which is probably the most pure country song of Kenny’s career. Dean also wrote Tennessee Whiskey which was one George Jones signature songs and later helped Chris Stapleton burst onto the national scene with his bluesy rendition of the song. But Dean’s biggest success was writing for George Strait. From the beginning Dean, was George’s go to for hit songs and album cuts as well. Dean even wrote “Unwound” which was George Strait’s first single and kicked off Strait’s unbelievable 35 plus year career. Here’s a few of the song “It ain’t cool to be crazy over you” “I’ve come to expect it from you” “If I know me” “Easy come, easy go” “Marina Del Ray” “Nobody in his right mind would have left her” “Ocean Front Property” “The Chair” which both are two of the most clever lyrically that Strait ever recorded. “The chair” was co-written with another country music songwriting legend Hank Cochran. And was written in about 20 minutes after a late night song writing session. Also “Back to being me” which is one of my favorite album cuts from the “ If you ain’t lovin, you ain’t livin” album. Dean also has written songs for Toby Keith, Leann Womack, Alabama, and Shenandoah. Dean has a great website deandillon.com that has a ton of cool information about his career. In 2017, a documentary was released entitled “Tennessee Whiskey, The Dean Dillon Story.”

Of Symphonies, Dogwhistles and Western Nationalism. The Triggered Left Reacts to Trump's Speech in Poland. And yes, it seems, they really do want to destroy Western Civilization. But are their Politically Correct bromides wearing thin? Meanwhile, President Trump has a long meeting with Vladimir Putin, described by eminence grise David Gergen as "promising" and "presidential big league stuff." Also, the New York Times confesses to an "honest mistake" in its libeling of Sarah Palin, the sanctimonious Senator Ben Sasse contemplates a presidential run in 2020, columnist Bret Stephens tells the American people they should learn to "admire" more educated elites, and Trump toys with a flailing John Podesta. Plus, the Politico offers sympathy for increasingly isolated "leakers" now living in "fear" of getting caught by the Trump Administration.
