It's Friday, February 6th, A.D. 2026. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus 21 of 22 churches destroyed in Christian town in Myanmar since coup On January 30, the Burma Research Institute released a scathing report detailing destructive attacks, murders, and harassment of Christians and churches since the military coup in 2021 that forcefully took control of Myanmar, reports International Christian Concern. Some of the key findings include: 21 out of 22 churches in Thantlang Town, a majority-Christian town, have been destroyed and the town's population displaced since 2021. More than 340 churches and Christian buildings have been destroyed. 149 Christians murdered and 218 imprisoned from 2022 to 2025. One unnamed church leader, who is still living inside Myanmar, testified powerfully that the faithful are now scattered across jungles, remote areas, and informal shelters, struggling to preserve their faith and communal life under constant threat and insecurity. Pastor in India forced to eat cow dung After accusing a pastor in Odisha, India of forcefully converting Hindus to Christianity, a group of Hindu nationalists forced him to eat cow dung and drink sewer water, reports International Christian Concern. The incident occurred on January 4th, but only became widely known in recent days, prompting nationwide outrage and criticism. A mob of 40 people, reportedly affiliated with the Bajrang Dal — the militant wing of the Hindu nationalist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh — stormed a home during a prayer meeting in Parjang village, and accused the pastor of conducting “forced religious conversions.” Pastor Bipin Bihari Naik was dragged from the house and beaten with sticks. His face was smeared with red vermilion. Sandals were hung around his neck. He was then paraded through the village for nearly two hours. Pastor Naik was eventually taken to a local Hindu temple, where his hands were tied to a metal rod, and he was forced to consume cow dung and drink water from a sewer. They also tried to force the pastor to chant Hindu slogans, but he refused to do so. In a statement on X, Pinarayi Vijayan, the chief minister of Kerala, wrote, “Forcing a human being to eat cow dung is a deeply inhuman act, emboldened by the silence and complicity of BJP-led governments.” Landslide in Congo kills 200 miners A landslide last week collapsed several tunnels at a major coltan mine in eastern Congo, leaving at least 200 people dead in the rebel-controlled site, reports the Associated Press. The collapse occurred  Wednesday at the Rubaya mines, controlled by the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels, after heavy rains caused several hand-dug tunnels in the unregulated mine to cave. The M23 rebels and the Congolese government traded accusations over responsibility as reports from the remote region began to emerge. The collapse is one of the deadliest disasters in years in an area already facing a humanitarian crisis and ongoing conflict. Trump announced prayer gathering to rededicate America to God Appearing at the National Prayer Breakfast, President Donald Trump explained that the Department of Education will protect the right of public school students to pray. TRUMP: “Today, I'm also pleased to announce that the Department of Education is officially issuing its new guidance to protect the right to prayer in our public schools. That's a big deal.” (applause) President Trump also announced that Americans are invited to attend a special prayer event on the 250th birthday of America in our nation's capital. TRUMP: “In the last 12 months, young Americans attended church at nearly twice the rate as they did four years ago to support this exciting renewal. This morning, I'm pleased to announce that on May 17, we're inviting Americans from all across the country to come together on our National Mall to pray. We're going to rededicate America as one nation under God.” (applause) Psalm 33:12 says, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people He chose for His inheritance.” NBC anchor Savannah Guthrie addresses kidnappers of her mother In a tearful video posted Wednesday on Instagram, “Today” co-anchor Savannah Guthrie — flanked by her sister, Annie Guthrie, and her brother, Camron Guthrie, pleaded for more information from the possible kidnapper of her 84-year-old mother, saying her family is “ready to talk,” reports NBC News. GUTHRIE: “Our mom is our heart and our home. She is 84 years old. Her health, her heart is fragile. She lives in constant pain. She is without any medicine. She needs it to survive. We need to know, without a doubt, that she is alive and that you have her. We want to hear from you. And we are ready to listen.” In the Instagram video, Savannah thanked the public for “the prayers for our beloved mom,” Nancy Guthrie, who was last seen Saturday night in her home outside Tucson, Arizona. She was reported missing after she did not show up for church.  Nancy had no cognitive issues, and her disappearance was not linked to dementia. Blood was found on the front porch of Guthrie's house. DNA analysis has confirmed the blood belongs to Nancy Guthrie. A doorbell camera to her home was disconnected and removed at 1:47 local time and at 2:28, Guthrie's pacemaker was disconnected from her phone, an app shows. Fox10 TV reports that investigators are taking seriously a ransom note sent to a handful of media outlets connected to her disappearance. Heith Janke, the FBI chief in Phoenix, announced that they have arrested Derrick Callella in Hawthorne, California. Shocking lessons taught on college campuses today And finally, according to Students for Life's January newsletter, college students are being taught shocking lessons – often paid for by our tax dollars. * Harvard University has a class called, "Come hammered. Get Nailed: Safe Sex Under the Influence.” * Ohio State University features a class entitled, "Fighting Abortion Stigma with Planned Parenthood." * And Grand Valley State University has one called “Breaking Up with Purity Culture.” If that's not enough, they'll be encouraged to write Valentine's Day “thank you” cards to abortionists! The truth is many colleges have turned into little more than recruitment centers for Planned Parenthood's bloody business by first encouraging students to experiment sexually and then funneling vulnerable young women to abortionists to “take care of” or murder the natural consequences of sex – precious little babies. Campus missionaries with Students for Life are confronting the Culture of Death with three outreaches. First, setting up Cemetery of Innocents displays that visually expose the gruesome reality of abortion featuring 1,102 bright pink crosses commemorating the preborn babies aborted by Planned Parenthood every day. Second, hosting table events that spark one-on-one conversations with pro-abortion college students. And third, screening the pro-life movie Unplanned which tells the incredible conversion story of Abby Johnson, who was a Planned Parenthood director-turned-staunch-pro-life-activist, after she witnessed a preborn child squirming for its life away from an abortionist's tools during an abortion. On a quiet night that should have ended like any other, one violent act set off a chain of events that would fracture a community and leave more questions than answers. The murder of Trent Digiuro didn't arrive with warning signs or a clear villain—it unfolded in the blurred space between friendship and fear, impulse and intention. In the days that followed, whispers traveled faster than facts, and investigators began pulling at threads that revealed a far more complicated story than it first appeared. What happened to Trent wasn't just about a single moment of violence, but about the choices made before it—and the ones that followed—that would ultimately force everyone involved to reckon with the truth.SOURCES: 1) Man convicted of killing UK player in ‘90s back in court in another new case 2) Dateline: The Motive3) DiGiuros Find Closure in Wrongful Death Suit4) Notorious 1990s slaying of UK football player featured in new true crime series5) A Killer Among Friends: A Killer on Campus

Welcome to our Reveal podcast,“So how are we equipped to make decisions?”The Bible teaches that God never asks us to choose wisely without first equipping us to do so. Scripture tells us that wisdom begins with reverence for the Lord, not with pressure or fear. Proverbs reminds us that when we trust in God with all our heart and don't rely solely on our own understanding, He promises to direct our paths. We're equipped through God's Word, which acts like a lamp for our steps, giving light just enough for the next decision. We're also equipped through prayer, where we're invited to ask God for wisdom freely and without shame, knowing He delights in guiding His children. To support this ministry and help us continue our God-given mission, click here:Subscribe to our channel for the latest sermons:https://www.youtube.com/@revealvineyardLearn more about Vineyard Church Reveal Campus:https://www.revealvineyard.com/Follow us on social media!Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/vineyardrevealcampus Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/RevealVineyard

Twenty Years of Transformation: How Laurel Ridge Community College Changed Page County

    The Valley Today

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 29, 2026 27:09

From Crisis to Opportunity When the Wrangler plant closed its doors in Page County over two decades ago, the community faced a crossroads. However, what could have been a devastating blow instead became the catalyst for educational transformation. Dr. Kim Blosser, President of Laurel Ridge Community College, talks with Janet Michael on The Valley Today to reflect on how the Luray-Page County Center has spent 20 years opening doors for students who once had limited access to higher education. Geography as Destiny Before the center opened, Page County students faced a challenging reality. Located in a valley surrounded by mountains, they endured 45-minute to 90-minute commutes to reach the nearest Laurel Ridge campuses in Middletown or Warrenton. Consequently, many students simply gave up on their educational dreams or opted for Blue Ridge Community College in Harrisonburg, which offered an easier drive without crossing mountain passes. "Students in that county had to go the furthest from any other of our localities," Dr. Blosser explains. This geographic isolation meant that Page County residents were effectively cut off from the educational opportunities available to their neighbors in other parts of the Laurel Ridge service area. A Community Rallies Fortunately, local leaders recognized the urgent need for change. When the Wrangler plant closed, the town of Luray acquired the annex building. Together, the county and town invested in renovating part of the facility, offering the college space for minimal rent. This partnership created not only a retraining center for displaced workers but also a permanent educational presence in the community. The impact proved immediate and profound. Federal Trade Act funding helped former Wrangler employees pursue new careers through education. Dr. Blosser shares the touching story of Cindy, a former plant worker who earned her associate's degree and spent her entire second career working at the Luray-Page Center—until her recent retirement after nearly 20 years of service. Meanwhile, another former employee went on to become an elementary school teacher, demonstrating how access to education can completely transform lives. Outgrowing the Original Vision As the years passed, however, the old Wrangler annex building began showing its limitations. While the space worked well for traditional classroom subjects like English and history, it couldn't accommodate science labs, electrical training, or HVAC programs. Moreover, the aging facility required increasingly costly repairs, and the town no longer owned the building—a private company did. "Our students deserved better," Dr. Blosser recalls thinking. The college began searching for alternatives, examining various existing buildings throughout the county. Yet each option presented similar challenges: they were outdated structures requiring extensive renovation with uncertain outcomes. Building a Dream Then came a breakthrough. The Jenkins family stepped forward with an extraordinary offer: they would donate land for a new campus. Located behind Walmart in a central, easily accessible location, the site seemed perfect. What followed was nothing short of remarkable. The Laurel Ridge Educational Foundation launched an ambitious fundraising campaign, ultimately raising over $4 million from Page County residents and businesses. "They were just desperate not to lose the college," Dr. Blosser notes. "They know it's the heart of economic development." Despite supply chain challenges during the pandemic—including having to switch brick suppliers mid-construction—the project moved forward with impressive speed. A Campus for the Future Today, Jenkins Hall stands as a testament to community vision and determination. Unlike traditional institutional buildings, the facility features warm wood beams, open ceilings, and panoramic mountain views. The design intentionally creates a welcoming atmosphere that reflects the natural beauty of Page County. The first floor houses specialized labs that were impossible in the old location. Students now learn electrical work, HVAC systems, and heavy equipment operation in a dedicated trades lab. Across the hall, a modern science lab enables anatomy and physiology courses—essential prerequisites for health profession programs. Additionally, the building serves as home to the region's only Physical Therapy Assisting program, drawing students from an hour and a half radius. Upstairs, the design becomes even more innovative. Three classrooms feature soundproof movable walls that collapse to create one large space accommodating up to 100 people. This flexibility allows the center to host dual enrollment graduations, chamber of commerce job fairs, and corporate meetings—addressing a critical shortage of community gathering spaces in Page County. More Than Just Classrooms Throughout our conversation, Dr. Blosser emphasizes that Laurel Ridge operates as a "comprehensive community college." This means serving everyone from adult basic education students to those pursuing the first two years of a bachelor's degree. The college offers GED preparation, English as a Second Language classes, short-term workforce training, corporate education, and traditional transfer programs. "We can serve as many as 20,000 individuals in a year," Dr. Blosser reveals. Furthermore, approximately 50 percent of transfer program classes now offer online options, providing crucial flexibility for working adults and parents. While hands-on programs like welding and phlebotomy require in-person attendance, students can increasingly customize their schedules by mixing on-campus and online coursework. The Door to Tomorrow Perhaps the most intriguing detail about Jenkins Hall involves a door on the first floor that appears to lead nowhere. However, Dr. Blosser eagerly points it out on every tour she gives. The architectural plans show this door will eventually connect via a breezeway to a second building—one that doesn't exist yet. "That door doesn't go nowhere," she insists with a smile. "There is something beyond that building. We just have to wait, and when that moment arrives, be ready to move." This forward-thinking approach reflects the same vision that transformed a closed factory into an educational hub two decades ago. As Page County continues growing—with new townhomes and developments surrounding what was once an isolated field behind Walmart—the college stands ready to expand its mission once again. Looking Ahead While Dr. Blosser modestly suggests she'll likely retire before the center's 40th anniversary, she remains confident about continued growth. The rapid changes of the past 20 years—from distance learning via Old Dominion University in a small computer room to today's sophisticated online platforms—hint at even more dramatic transformations ahead. For now, the Luray-Page County Center continues fulfilling its founding mission: ensuring that geography no longer determines educational destiny. Whether students seek workforce credentials, transfer degrees, or personal enrichment, they can find opportunities right in their own community. After 20 years, that door the Jenkins family helped open remains wide, welcoming anyone ready to walk through and discover what lies beyond.

Guest: Randell Holmes, Jr., college student/athlete at Texas A&M University, author of Daily Devotional for Teen Boys   As a young man, Randell found his identity in football…but in college, something changed. To be honest, what changed was Randell himself. God truly got a hold of Randell's heart, his life, his passion and his trajectory in life changed forever! Randell went from a “football player” to a young man passionately pursuing a relationship with the Lord.   Great reminder from Randell that walking with Jesus is a relationship…and for a relationship to grow and mature, it takes intentionality - time, energy, focus. If you want to get closer to God, get in the Word, spend time in prayer, and find an older, more mature Christian man to disciple you. Some guys don't want to “get closer” to God - they are fine with “distance” because then they control the relationship - but that's like having a Ferrari and driving it in first gear - it's time to shift and accelerate that relationship!   What's next for Randell - well, he's off to an incredible place called Campus by the Sea, a Christian camp on Catalina Island in sunny California! Join me in praying for Randell and this incredible opportunity to impact the lives of others! And don't forget to come back next week for the incredible continuation of our conversation with Randell.   Randell's book is part of a 3-part series that covers young men from youth through college: Devotions for Preteen Boys by Randell Holmes, Jr. and Chandler Fletcher Daily Devotionals for Teen Boys (ages 14-16) by Randell Holmes, Jr. Daily Devotionals for College Men by Brett Trefren T4M guys - just a reminder that Training4Manhood is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) ministry and you can make donations either via Zelle (info@training4manhood.com) or by visiting the Training4Manhood website.

===== MDJ Script/ Top Stories for January 23rd Publish Date:  January 23rd    Commercial: From the BG AD Group Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast.    Today is Friday, January 23rd and Happy Birthday to Earl Falconer I’m Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Times Journal KSU students rally on campus to protest ICE, deportations and detentions National Weather Service: Potential ‘major winter storm’ incoming this weekend Cobb victim advocate appointed to State Parole Board Plus, Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on breads All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!  BREAK: INGLES 8 STORY 1: KSU students rally on campus to protest ICE, deportations and detentions  Hundreds of Kennesaw State students walked out of class Tuesday, joining a nationwide protest against ICE on the anniversary of Donald Trump’s second inauguration. The “Free America” walkout, organized by Students for Socialism at KSU, called for justice for those detained, deported, or killed by ICE—like Renee Nicole Good, who was fatally shot by an ICE agent in Minneapolis earlier this month. Students gathered on the campus green, holding signs and chanting, “Justice for Renee” and “The people united will never be defeated.” Some marched around the student center, megaphones in hand, their voices echoing across campus. Grace Blomberg, one of the organizers, said the walkout was about solidarity. “We have a responsibility to stand with our immigrant brothers and sisters and with students in Minneapolis who’ve been striking for days,” she said. Not everyone agreed. Andre Stafford, chair of the Cobb Young Republicans, called the protests “misinformed” and said, “At the end of the day, it’s about law and order.” STORY 2: National Weather Service: Potential ‘major winter storm’ incoming this weekend  Winter’s about to make its presence known in Georgia, and the National Weather Service is urging everyone to stay alert. A major winter storm is brewing, set to hit the eastern U.S. this weekend, but where it’ll hit hardest? Still up in the air. Meteorologist Sam Marlow explained the storm’s setup: Arctic air surging south meets warm, moisture-packed air from the Gulf and Pacific. Somewhere along a line from the Carolinas to Texas, they’ll collide—bringing snow, freezing rain, and chaos. For Cobb County, expect a messy mix. Rain and snow showers could start early Saturday, with temps hovering around 40. By nightfall, it’s all but guaranteed—precipitation, freezing rain, and lows dipping to 26. Sunday? More of the same, with highs near 36 and lows plummeting to 19. And once the storm’s gone? Bitter cold sticks around. The advice? Be ready. Stock up on groceries, cover outdoor pipes, and pack an emergency kit for your car. If roads get bad, stay put—it helps crews clear them faster. For those without a warm place to stay, MUST Ministries is opening its winter warming shelter Saturday through Feb. 3. Located at 1297 Bells Ferry Road in Marietta, the shelter offers hot meals, beds, and breakfast. Guests should arrive by 8 p.m., and transportation is available through county transit vouchers. Stay safe, Georgia. STORY 3: Cobb victim advocate appointed to State Parole Board  Kimberly McCoy, a veteran in victim advocacy from Cobb County, has been appointed to the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles by Gov. Brian Kemp. She steps into the role left by Meg Heap, who departed in August to become U.S. attorney for Georgia’s Southern District. McCoy’s resume is stacked. She co-founded the Cobb Family Justice Center, served 25 years as director of the Cobb DA’s Victim Witness Unit, and holds degrees in criminal justice and public administration. But her new role hasn’t been without controversy. Attorneys for death row inmate Stacey Humphreys, convicted of killing two Cobb real estate agents, argued McCoy’s past work with victims’ families creates a conflict of interest in his clemency case. Though McCoy planned to abstain from voting, a judge ruled her involvement could still unfairly sway the outcome. Humphreys’ execution, originally set for Dec. 17, has been delayed until a full, impartial clemency hearing can take place. McCoy’s appointment marks a new chapter in her career, but it’s already proving to be a challenging one. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info.  We’ll be right back. Break: INGLES 8 STORY 4: Severe blood shortage: Give blood to Red Cross now  The American Red Cross is in desperate need of blood donors—like, now. Winter always strains the blood supply, but this year? It’s critical. Patients can’t afford delays in lifesaving care, so if you’re eligible, roll up your sleeve and help. As a thank-you, donors through Jan. 25 are entered to win a trip to Super Bowl LX in California. From Jan. 26 to Feb. 28, you’ll snag a $20 e-gift card. Local drives are happening all over Cobb County—Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and more. Check RedCrossBlood.org for dates and locations. And remember: your donation could literally save a life. STORY 5: F BRAVES: Carlos Beltrán and Andruw Jones are headed to Cooperstown, two center fielders who dominated their eras with a mix of power, speed, and jaw-dropping defense. Born just a day apart in April 1977, they’ll now share the stage at the Hall of Fame induction on July 26. Beltrán, in his fourth year on the ballot, finally crossed the 75% threshold, earning 84.2% of the vote. Jones, in his ninth year, got 78.4%. Both had to climb uphill—Beltrán’s path clouded by the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal, Jones’ by a slow start in Hall voting (just 7.3% in 2018). Beltrán, a nine-time All-Star, hit .279 with 435 homers and 1,587 RBIs over 20 seasons. He was a postseason monster, batting .307 with 16 homers in 65 playoff games. “The Mets are a big part of my identity,” he said, though his career spanned stints with Kansas City, Houston, St. Louis, and others. Jones, meanwhile, was a defensive wizard, winning 10 Gold Gloves and smashing 434 homers. He’s now the sixth Braves legend from their 1990s dynasty to make the Hall, joining Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, Chipper, and McGriff. I'm Keith Ippolito and that’s your MDJ Sports Minute. And now here is Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on breads We’ll have closing comments after this.
