Railroad workers are sounding the alarm about the potentially catastrophic consequences of the proposed mega-merger of two of the nation's Class 1 freight rail companies. “Union Pacific said it would buy smaller rival Norfolk Southern in an $85-billion deal to create the country's first coast-to-coast freight rail operator,” Reuters reported in July. “If approved, the deal would be the largest-ever buyout in the sector.” If this giant merger goes through, what will it mean for railroad workers, customers, and for the general public? In this episode of Working People, we speak with a panel of six veteran railroaders and members of Railroad Workers United to get a workers' eye view of the proposed mega-merger and what it will mean for rail labor, the US supply chain, and for the public writ large. Speakers: Ron Kaminkow is a member of Railroad Workers United, currently serving as a trustee, and he is also a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET), Division 51 in Reno, Nevada. Kaminkow recently retired from Amtrak; prior to working in passenger rail, he worked on the freight rail system for Norfolk Southern and Conrail. Jeff Kurtz was a railroad engineer and union member for 40 years and is a member of Railroad Workers United. He served as a union officer most of his career, including eight years as president of BLET Local 391 and chairman of the BLET Iowa State Legislative Board, where he oversaw safety and legislative matters for the union in the state for four railroads for 10 years. He retired in 2014 and served as state representative for one term in the Iowa House after winning the 2018 election in his House district. Derek Masters is a member of Railroad Workers United and works as a conductor for a major Class 1 railroad, primarily in the Northeast. He is a member of SMART Transportation Division (SMART-TD). Matt Parker is a member of Railroad Workers United who works as a rank-and-file locomotive engineer, based in Nevada, with over 20 years of experience. Matt Weaver is a founding member of Railroad Workers United and has been a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees (Teamsters) for 30 years. He serves as the BMWED legislative director for the state of Ohio. Nick Wurst currently serves as general secretary of Railroad Workers United who works as a freight conductor and locomotive engineer, based in Massachusetts. Wurst started working for the railroad in 2019 as an intermodal worker and member of the Transportation Communication Union (TCU/IAM) and is currently a member of SMART-TD. Only one place to start, Court 11 that was packed for Taylor Townsend's upset-victory over (25)Jelena Ostapenko. The Latvian took the L badly and resorted to some pretty derogatory insults, accusing Townsend of having “no class” and “no education”. Townsend handled the situation superbly, both on court and in press afterwards. To think all that happened on HBCU Live Day, that was brilliantly acknowledged with a great discussion in the morning on the legacy of Althea Gibson. Leslie Allen, Sloane Stephens, Kamau Murray and Boris Kodjoe were on the panel that was excellently moderated by Monica McNutt. Frances Tiafoe saw off big-serving qualifier Martin Damm in four sets. Big Foe had to stay patient, but took care of business on his side, served great and played smart against the lefty who he spoke highly of in press. Jasmine Paolini, playing her second night match in a row in New York, convincingly beat Iva Jovic in straight sets. The Italian seventh seed confirmed the dress was a night-session fit and spoke about her next opponent Marketa Vondrousova. Ben Shelton beat Pablo Carreno Busta in straights. The American looked very comfortable on Louis Armstrong and managed the match well which is something we put to him in his post-match presser. Listen out for interview snippets from Townsend, Mirra Andreeva, Tiafoe, Paolini and Shelton. Don't forget to rate, review and share on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Audioboom. It has actually been more than a decade at this point since I first covered this concept in Epi-761 of the Podcast. I talked about it a lot after that but it became clear that some of what I was saying was being misunderstood. So in 2012 I did this YouTube video about it. Today a bit more than a decade into this we take a look at how it is playing out and what I got right and wrong. As this is a rewind we are not three year further from the original done in 2012 and it has only become more accurate … Continue reading →
Utilizing class analysis is the bread and butter of socialist politics. But understanding how classes are shaped and reproduced has changed over time. On this episode of Confronting Capitalism, Vivek Chibber breaks down how the Marxist tradition has theorized class, the difference between a class in itself and a class for itself, and how class analysis is used within political organizing. One of the perils of recording early is I'm guaranteed to forget what the episode was. But good news, I think they met one of this book's big bad guys, a pugnacious and dangerous Imperial officers hanging around in a ziggurat. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The formal academic school year is underway in most places in a United States facing accelerated fascist overtures from elements in federal and state governments. Memories of Anti-Black state action evoked at the 20th anniversary of the Hurricane Katrina disaster can be juxtaposed against current attacks on both state and African memory and education to remind us that we live in a moment demanding more of us than compliance. We must look to ourselves, both to survive and to grow. Other anniversaries we consider this week include the birthday of Asa G. Hilliard III, a pioneering educator who used his platform to remind us of our best practices in education across time and space. As we continue our work of jailbreaking the Black University, this week we continue to pose more essential questions: What is education? What should it be? How do we meet the challenge of both defending hard-won political victories and of building institutions that can sustain us against escalating fascism, white nationalism and cultural amnesia. Strengthening the Momentum of Memory provides an action that reminds us that, when we have grounded ourselves in our Ways of Knowing, we have transformed ourselves and the Social Structures we have found ourselves in in recent memory. The challenge before us is to do it again. It is time to go Black to School.JOIN KNARRATIVE: https://www.knarrative.com it's the only way to get into #Knubia, where these classes areheld live with a live chat.To shop Go to:TheGlobalMajorityMore from us:Knarrative Twitter: https://twitter.com/knarrative_Knarrative Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/knarrative/In Class with Carr Twitter: https://twitter.com/inclasswithcarrSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
