The musical follows the same general premise of the movies, with some… interesting… twists and changes. There is a WHOLE lot to unpack with this one. ‘A Musical Tale' has had 3 productions prior to coming to Chicago. It was originally performed in Toronto in 2006, London in 2007, and Berkshire, UK in 2023. The production has changed drastically over the course of its run, being scaled down for 2023's show and beyond. The musical was written by Shaun McKenna & Matthew Warchus, with music by A.R. [TW//Postnatal Depression, Suicidal Thoughts] 80% of mothers experience "baby blues" but 10% have a dramatic increase in symptoms that lasts beyond the usual 1-3 weeks and can develop into postnatal depression. These symptoms were horrific for my next guest, actor Carryl Thomas, who experienced suicidal thoughts and a breakdown. She found the strength to ask for help and is now a hugely positive voice on helping other parents with baby blues, postnatal depression and finding a sense of the individual self as well as being a parent. Carryl is also mother to successful young performers and she discusses how to manage other parents and children pressures and expectations in an exciting and challenging acting industry. Carryl is an English actress who grew up in South London. Carryl studied Musical Theatre at Mountview and enjoyed a few years in West End Musicals performing in Olivier Award winning shows, such as, My Fair Lady (directed by Sir Trevor Nunn) and Our House (directed by Matthew Warchus) and then made a smooth transition into Television joining Channel 5's original soap Family Affairs as troubled teen Kelly Boulter for 3 years, where she received British Soap and Screen Nation Award Nominations. Carryl subsequently joined the cast of The Sarah Jane Adventures and made a guest appearances in Holby City. Carryl created the role of Keisha in the world Premiere Flashdance directed by Tony Award-winning director Kenny Leon and choreographed by Arlene Phillips. Other work includes filming a new crime series from the producers of CSI and Law and Order, Silent Witness, Emmerdale and Royal Variety performances. As a busy Mother of 4 boys, Carryl continues working as an actress and combines acting with running the Foundation course at Mountview. Carryl's sons seem to be following closely in her footsteps. Her eldest son made his acting debut at the National Theatre in Patrick Marber's adaptation of Three Days in the Country, her second son Oscar made his acting debut in Bridgerton for Netflix, her third son Eiden-River made his debut in Silent Witness for BBC 1 and her youngest, Lake is only 4 but is surrounded by the arts and it won't be long before he decide to join in or indeed run for the hills! Starring Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, Dominic West, Paddy Considine, Andrew Scott, George MacKay, Joseph Gilgun, and Ben Schnetzer, the film written by Stephen Beresford and directed by Matthew Warchus received critical acclaim and a Golden Globe nomination. Set against the backdrop of Margaret Thatcher's Britain, the film incorporates historical details and enough recognizable British talent to appeal to the Harry Potter crowd, but didn't exactly strike paydirt at the box office. Comedian, actor and composer Tim Minchin wrote the songs for the musical adaptation of the Roald Dahl story Matilda which, after more than a decade of sell-out West End shows, has now also been adapted for the big screen. His stage musical version of the film Groundhog Day earned him an Olivier award and seven Tony nominations on Broadway. He also co-wrote and starred in the television comedy drama series Upright, and has performed solo shows around the world. Tim Minchin tells John Wilson about his most important cultural influences and creative inspirations, starting with his upbringing in Perth, Australia. He recalls his earliest attempts at songwriting, influenced by TS Eliot and 90s grunge rock bands, which led to him writing a musical version of Love's Labour's Lost for a youth theatre company whilst he was still at school. Tim chooses the American singer-songwriter Ben Folds as one of his key influences, and particularly the 1997 Ben Folds Five album Whatever Ever And Ever, Amen. He also cites being commissioned to write the songs for The Royal Shakespeare Company's Matilda The Musical, and working with director Matthew Warchus, as a major turning creative turning point. Perhaps surprisingly, Tim chooses an ill-fated musical project, Larrikins, as another important moment in his career. He reflects on how the animated adventure, which was due to star Hugh Jackman and Margot Robbie, was cancelled by studio bosses and the effect that experience had on him. Producer: Edwina Pitman

Get in, we're going to Swansea for a massive lez-off! This week Jake and Kevin dig into a jolly wee film called Pride, directed by Matthew Warchus and released in 2014. This movie follows a gaggle of U.K. gay activists who work to help Welsh miners during the prolonged strike of the National Union of Mineworkers in 1984. At the center of the story is Ben Schnetzer as Mark Ashton, the young activist leading the charge to support the town of Onllwyn when the struggles for gay rights were already so great and the AIDS crisis was beginning to rear its head in London. The whole cast gets time to shine in their own way in this remarkable movie, from Imelda Staunton's brassy mama-bear Hefina, to Dominic West's flamboyant and outspoken Jonathan, to Menna Trussler's earnest and humorous Gwen. With such a powerful story and beautiful acting, how did this film not get wider acclaim in 2014? Are all inter-generational stories of friendship guaranteed to make Jake cry? How many lesbian jokes is too many lesbian jokes? Jake and Kevin consider these and more, so tune in wherever you get your podcasts! In a shocking twist, our miniseries continues...and we sort of liked this movie? We continue our miniseries on the "Eating Out" cinematic universe this week. What makes Eating Out 2: Sloppy Seconds so much more fun than the first? We have some ideas, but body hair is still not on the list.

“When you're in a battle against an enemy so much bigger, so much stronger than you, to find out you had a friend you never knew existed, that's the best feeling in the world.” Fans of fun, come on in! In our series 8 finale, the Spoiler team are watching Matthew Warchus’s biographical comedy-drama ‘Pride’ and there’s not a doubt in anyone’s mind that the whole team are going to love it. A traditional Spoiler love-in becomes a full-on celebration of love as the team share the moments that made them cry, laugh and cheer. Paul enthuses about the soundtrack, leading Andy to share his research on whether King, Queen, Prince and Princess have ever all been in the top 40 at the same time. Politics inevitably rears its head, with Rachael delivering a passionate viewpoint on the miners strike, while Paul defends his right to watch films on his phone. Andy waxes lyrical about the beauty of buying someone a pint and everyone takes a moment out to remember the genius of Victoria Wood. After a series in which every episode has seen the team divided, Pride at last unites the group for an uplifting finale. Elsewhere, Andy looks at the growing prominence of LGBTQ representation in children’s TV shows, including ‘Arthur’, ‘The Legend of Korra’ and ‘Steven Universe’. This week’s scale: Did it fill you with pride or Could you not abide pride so much you cried and you thought it was snide no matter how hard you tried you’ve gone against the tide no matter how well you hide inside you’ve died, your brains have been fried all because you couldn’t be plied with Pride!

A Christmas Carol is London's Old Vic Theatre's Christmas offering this year. It's a new version by Jack Thorne (who wrote Harry Potter and The Cursed Child) directed by Matthew Warchus and starring Rhys Ifans as Ebenezer Scrooge The Disaster Artist is a tribute to one of the worst films ever - Tommy Wisseau's The Room. If the original was such a stinker, can a film about it be funny about the ineptitude or just cruel? Elisa Lodato's novel An Unremarkable Body tells the story of a middle-aged daughter coming to terms with the death of her mother. There's an exhibition of work by Rose Wylie at London's Serpentine Galleries Crown Court was a daytime TV series which ran for 12 years from 1972. It's being resurrected with Judge Rinder as the gavel-banging star; Judge Judy meets 12 Angry men? Tom Sutcliffe's guests are Patrick Gale, Briony Hanson and John Mullan The producer is Oliver Jones.

Pride is a new British film, starring Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton and Dominic West, that tells the extraordinary story of the Lesbian and Gay group that travelled to South Wales in 1984 to support the striking miners. Kirsty talks to writer Stephen Beresford and director Matthew Warchus. Kirsty Lang explores a major retrospective of master photographer Horst P Horst, with fashion and lifestyle writer Martin Raymond . Featuring famous photographs including Mainbocher Corset, recreated by Madonna in her Vogue video, alongside Hollywood portraits, Vogue covers and nude studies. Tyrant is a new American thriller series whose creative team also worked on Homeland and 24 and - like them - it interweaves political drama and family issues. Tyrant focuses on Barry, youngest son of a war-torn fictional country's dictator, who's escaped his past and now lives in California with his American wife and children. But despite themselves, this all-American family becomes embroiled in the political intrigues of the nation they've left behind. American writer and critic Michael Carlson reviews. And novelist Rachel Cusk talks about her new book Outline. It tells the story of an English writer, teaching in Athens, who finds that everyone she meets wants to share their stories with her.
