Using a VR headset, menopausal women were presented guided imagery featuring cooling and relaxing suggestions. A pilot study showed it reduced the frequency and intensity of hot flashes, improved sleep quality, and enhanced overall well-being. Dr. Joseph Feuerstein discusses a comprehensive strategy for menopause, comprising acupuncture, natural products (Estrovera and Relizen), exercise and diet. Are soy isoflavones OK for relieving menopausal symptoms, even in breast cancer patients? Dr. Feuerstein is also co-author of "The Cannabinoid Cookbook," which is not merely a guidebook to marijuana edibles; instead, it focuses on the numerous foods that support the body's endocannabinoid system—Including cocoa, omega-3 fatty acids, turmeric, and truffles. In this episode, my guest is Dr. Matthew Hill, Ph.D., a professor of cell biology and anatomy at the Hotchkiss Brain Institute at the University of Calgary and an expert on the biology of cannabis. We discuss how cannabis affects the brain to produce its psychoactive effects (feeling “high”), including altered time perception, focus, memory, appetite, and stress. We discuss how THC vs. cannabidiol (CBD) affects the brain, the effects of different routes of cannabis administration (e.g., smoking, vaping, edibles), high-potency THC, and whether cannabis is addictive. We discuss if there is a link between cannabis use and the development of psychosis, anxiety, bipolar depression, or schizophrenia.  We discuss whether CBD has clinical benefits in regulating stress, promoting sleep, and treating certain diseases. Lead Story: The conserved endocannabinoid anandamide modulates olfactory sensitivity to induce hedonic feeding in C. elegans  Current Biology Laboratory worm Caenorhabditis elegans apparently gets the ‘munchies' when exposed to cannabis. After soaking in an endocannabinoid bath, worms preferred to eat nutrient-rich, rather than nutrient-poor, bacteria. They fed for longer than worms not exposed to endocannabinoid or worms without working endocannabinoid receptors. This shared trait points to the deep evolutionary origin of cannabinoid receptors and behaviors influenced by the molecules. Today we are tackling a very important topic - seed oils and their impact on our health. As you probably know, seed oils are also known as vegetable oils, and they're everywhere in processed foods and restaurants.  The top ones to watch out for are soy, safflower, sunflower, corn, cotton seed, canola, grape seed, and rice brown oils. These oils are high in linoleic acid, an omega-six fatty acid that's been linked to the rise in obesity, type two diabetes, heart disease, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Dr. Kate Shanahan, who is one of the first to raise the alarm about the negative impact of these oils, has coined the term "hateful" for these oils. And it's no wonder - these oils are incredibly high in linoleic acid compared to the traditional fats we've been using for thousands of years. In fact, linoleic acid has increased from 9% of our body fat in 1959 to 22% in 2008, which can only come from our diets. The problem with these seed oils is that they're relatively new to our food system, and they've only been around since the introduction of Crisco in 1911. Prior to that, we didn't see much of the diseases that these oils have been linked to. And it's not just the correlation - if you look at the numbers, you'll see that the use of these oils has paralleled the rise in obesity, type two diabetes, and heart disease, while traditional fats like tallow, butter, lard, olive oil, and coconut oil have not shown the same correlation. The Endocannabinoid System (or ECS for short) is a complex cell-signalling system in the body that is responsible for maintaining homeostasis (balance) in virtually every system in the body. The ECS was identified in 1992 by Professor Raphael Mechoulam and his researchers who were exploring exactly how the Cannabinoid, THC, works in the body. The Endocannabinoid System plays a role in your body's functions such as sleep, mood, appetite, memory, reproduction & fertility. There are three main parts to our Endocannabinoid System (ECS): Endocannabinoid molecules Cannabinoid receptors Enzymes Endocannabinoids are molecules made by your body. The 2 known Endocannabinoids are 2-AG & Anandamide. These help keep the body's internal functions running smoothly. Your body produces them as needed so it's hard to keep track if there's a deficiency. The Cannabinoid receptors around our body are called CB1 & CB2. CB1 receptors are mostly found in the central nervous system. CB2 receptors are mostly found in your peripheral nervous system, especially immune cells. Endocannabinoids can bind to either receptor. The effects that result depend on where the receptor is located and which endocannabinoid it binds to. There are two main enzymes: fatty acid amide hydrolase monoacylglycerol acid lipase These are responsible for creating endocannabinoids, transporting them to our receptors and breaking down endocannabinoids once they have performed their function. Research has linked the ECS to the following processes: Appetite and digestion Metabolism Chronic pain Inflammation Mood Learning and memory Motor control Sleep Cardiovascular system function Muscle formation Bone remodelling and growth Liver function Stress Reproductive system function Skin and nerve function Ways to give your Endocannabinoid System a boost. What is Flow? The optimal state of consciousness where human beings perform and feel at their very best. It's a form of energy. I invite you to recall a time when you were so immersed in something you completely lost track of time. Have you noticed when you have been in a state where life's distractions did not bother you or you skipped a meal and didn't even feel hungry or notice it?  Have you been so connected with someone where you were in deep listening and collaboration with hours going by without noticing?  Have you observed your child sit for hours paying video games?Why is this?  There is an opportunity to discipline our unconscious mind by focusing on and even generate thoughts of our own choosing and attach meaning to them at the unconscious level to influence our behavior.  We can create internal representations of events that empower and engage us to create our own reality. Thoughts and Internal representations trigger our emotions and perceptions. This can cause us to allow our thinking to just sort of happen to us. However, we do have the power to control our thinking, lives, behavior, and results.  We open up a new dimension of our thinking and a higher version of ourselves.How can we enter the flow state?It's been scientifically proven to enter the flow state at will whenever you want. Having the attitude is the first step.  It's all about the journey! Essential Elements of the Flow state:Train yourself to experience the flow state at will, operate at flow including mundane tasks or those you may not have enjoyed in the past. ·       Setting a goal that does not risk becoming overwhelming or boring. ·       Breaking goals down to create smaller achievable goals that can be internalized.·       Focus attention on that goal. One at a time.·       Take concentrated action to achieving that goal. (block out distractions) ·       Time will disappear in the flow state·       Get better and better at the things in your life and when you achieve, challenge yourself with the next level.·       Be fully involved in the process.Chaos and Flow:Can you recall a time when you didn't have anywhere to be, clean to-do list, nobody tapping you for something? Once the initial feeling of this freedom passes, entropy brings in chaos. It brings in thoughts from the past (ruminate over) or into the future (worry). Our default setting is peace/calm/happiness, but the system and programming we have been exposed to creates the habitual mind. Chaos and disorder tend to be the operation.   Basically, as soon as we feel like we are ‘happy' we tend to challenge it and quickly shift into chaos. Chaos can exist in perceived order and order can exist in chaos. Typically, we are externally focused to find solutions to get to happiness. Instead, creating rewards within themselves and learning to enjoy the process of whatever it is they are doing can help them create order and get them into a state of flow. Science of Flow:Have you ever heard about the state of a runner's high, getting in the zone (athletes), musicians getting their groove. It's more common than you might think!  You can go in and out of multiple instances of the flow state. Flow is actually in our brains. Marked by a cascade of positive chemicals the brain releases in a way in which we perceive the task internally.  For instance. Mopping the floor sounds boring and mundane, but adding some fun to it can change the internal representation of mopping the floor. How about the process by changing up how you do it so the floor dries faster or inventing a machine in your mind that does the job while pretending to be that machine. Make it fun and challenging in a good way! As chemicals disburse around the body it changes our physiology.  There is still work to be done.One of the inspirations for this episode is helping others to find their flow. It's not easy with so many distractions and overwhelm throughout the day. Our energy can be sporadic and if we depend on caffeine for our energy that can take us up as fast as it can down. Conscious brain is fully engaged at this stage. Conscious incompetent stage. The planning portion, animal impulses, identity. For instance, Writing a book it's the interviews stage. Learning to play guitar, observing what it is you need to learn. This is trying to figure out what it is we need to learn to accomplish our goal or solve the problem. Relaxation – Consciously stop whatever you are doing completely to give your brain a rest. Slow down breathing. Take a nap, light swimming or yoga. Walk, gardening help to clear the mind and allow it to reboot. This is not TV or another activity that keeps your brain in activity. Start to use our intuition and use new ideas to do things.  Flow state - The Body is flooded with feel good chemicals. It releases dopamine helps us to enhance our focus, take in more info per second than we normally can). Pause.·       Do things you love just because you love it and want to do it, for no other reason.·       Practice gratitude every day – for the times you experience flow and all the other good things you enjoy.Triggers for flow (pick something that works for you) based on a combination of interviews with athletes in the zone and brain imaging techniques to scientifically confirm the subjective descriptions of that particular state. Steven Kotler has studied and come up with 17 triggers. The more intense the triggers the more momentum to get into/stay in Flow.4 physiological triggers: (individual)·       Deep concentration for long periods of time (no multi-tasking) – solitude typical, be in present moment·       Have clear goals – SMART Goals to engage with unconscious mind·       Immediate feedback lets you know if you're on the right track of your goal (allows you to be in the present moment – keeping in flow)·       Set a challenge that is slightly more difficult than your current skill level  (not too high or anxiety can slip you out of flow, too low creates boredom and slip out of flow) – find a balance between challenge and skill.3 Environmental triggers (individual)·       High consequences – when stakes are high, we don't need to force ourselves to concentrate. We do this naturally.·       Introduce a rich environment - unpredictability, complexity, and anything can happen. Lots of information comes in.·       Deep embodiment – Must be intensely focused with a full immersion strategy – comes in bursts. downhill skier.9 social triggers – can put a group into flow state. ·       Good communication – disciplined about what is/isn't allowed·       Naysaying not allowed·       Similar skills/roles ·       Equal responsibility ·       Aligned intentions·       Inclusion of everyone on team – each person equally important·       Element of Risk – Always going to be potential for failure. Flow doesn't happen with some sense of risk.·       Active listening – fully engaged in convo (each group member) - focused in the moment.·       Avoid negativity and arguments (blocks momentum, breaks flow state. Goal is to build momentum by amplifying each other's ideas.1 creative trigger·       Creativity – individual and group. Creativity triggers flow and flow enhances creativity. Linking ideas together to form new ideas. Flow in everyday life:Can initiate in many different contexts and many different situations. Stretch yourself when you have opportunities to get into the state of flow and maintaining it. Jeff is.........bringing bliss to South Florida. Born in Miami, and raised in Fort Lauderdale area, he went to UF Gainesville for an undergrad degree in business, entrepreneurship, and real estate, before studying law and working at a startup in the area. Nick talks to Saoirse O'Sullivan, PhD, a physiologist specializing in the physiological effects of cannabinoids. Dr. O'Sullivan ran a lab at the University of Nottingham for many years before becoming a consultant and Vice President of Translational Research at Artello Biosciences. Nick and Saoirse discussed some of the physiological effects of cannabinoids in the body, including endogenous cannabinoids that our own bodies produce, and plant cannabinoids associated with the Cannabis plant (e.g. THC, CBD, THCV, and CBG). They cover a number areas of physiology and systems in the body, including inflammation, brain injury, the blood-brain barrier, gut health, and the cardiovascular system. Have you been wondering what the buzz around CBD is all about? What is Hemp? Is it safe? Can it help us? Our guest today is the founder of Hemp & Humanity, Melissa Gibson. There is so much misinformation floating around about CBD today, Melissa is here to share with us some facts about it. CBD, short for Cannabidiol, is one of over 100 naturally occurring compounds that can be found in the hemp plant. Hemp is one variety of the cannabis plant that is distinguished by its lack of THC; by definition, hemp has less than three-tenths of one percent (.3%) of THC. While THC is the molecule responsible for feelings of euphoria, CBD does not have an intoxicating effect and cannot get you high. CBD is known as a phytocannabinoid, meaning it’s a cannabinoid that comes from plants. Our body generates its own type of cannabinoids, called endocannabinoids (endo meaning ‘within’) -- the most prominent are 2AG and Anandamide. Melissa talks a bit about what Social Enterprise is and why she was so drawn to it. She’s pulled towards sustainability because she spent years in a space where Social Enterprise was the focus. It meant she could do business and reflect a concern for the community in which she lived. She’s excited for the next generation of women coming through the Social Enterprise space. Now with new technologies, it’s possible to take things you’re passionate about and combine them with what you want to do professionally. If you’re just starting out, look out for the new educational programs springing up around the country!  Melissa then walks us through an obstacle she faced and how she overcame it. When she first started her business, the plant itself wasn’t federally legal, but thanks to a gray area, she was able to keep up with the industry. To do that, her business educates and sells curated CBD products. Unfortunately, she wasn’t able to use credit or debit-card purchasing. This made it incredibly hard to scale and grow. This forced her to rethink her business and take it to the people. She needed to be face to face with a customer where she could educate them and exchange cash. She got involved with local farmer’s markets and spoke with hundreds of people. She was able to give as much information as possible to empower that individual to make the choice for themselves.  CBD has enabled Melissa to get relief from her multiple immune disorders, recover from athletic training, decrease arthritis pain, reduce anxiety. and maintain balance. In October of 2017, after a year of regular use of the most highly effective CBD products, Melissa’s endocrinologist delivered the news that her Graves Diseases is headed toward remission. She feels the best she has in years and enjoys helping others to optimize their own health and wellbeing. Some define good health simply to be: physiological homeostasis. Remember homeostasis from Science class? We learned about it in terms of body temperature and thermogenesis – one example of homeostasis. When we’re too cold, we shiver to warm up. When we’re too hot, we sweat to cool off. Basically, homeostasis refers to a dynamic system of balance and maintenance in our bodies. The main function of cannabinoids, whether they are endocannabinoids like 2AG and Anandamide, or phytocannabinoids like CBD, is to help create homeostasis. This is accomplished by engagement with what is called, The Endocannabinoid System (ECS), the “Master Regulator” of other systems in our body. It is vital that our ECS is nourished, and CBD has been found to be an effective agent in this process. Eric Rieger  Alright, we're going to get down to the gut check project starting on episode 34. It's gonna be a quick one, but you're gonna love it.Ken Brown  Yeah, we're gonna try and do this a little bit quicker because what I've gotten some feedback is when you guys get all sciency that sometimes it's it's cool to hear the fun stuff, but the reality is that the science gets a little geeky and it gets almost like a lecture. So I apologize to everyone out there if I've been some weird professor but so my only thing so let's do the personal stuff is your family good? Eric Rieger  Family's Great! Awesome. Ken Brown  My family's great also awesome. And that's up for the personal stuff. So like I said, I was called by a good friend, Tim, our good friend his father had... Eric Rieger  Tim Power been on the show. Ken Brown  Yeah, Tim power been on the show. His father had a stroke. And he messaged me and he said, Hey, man, my dad had a stroke, and they don't seem to be talking diet. They don't seem to talking supplements. He's in rehab. He's getting better. I'm doing my own stuff. I'm trying to fix this. But do you have any recommendations? And rather than just knee jerk and go, Oh, I'm going to go ahead and yeah, just do this and this and this. I started thinking about it. I went Holy cow, my hospital. Medical city Plano.Eric Rieger  Right. Ken Brown  Is a level one trauma center and is designated as a magnet hospital for stroke, acute stroke rehabilitation. Eric Rieger  Okay. Ken Brown  So they have a whole team that if you show up with a stroke, it's just like a heart attack. They're badass. Yeah, they show up with like this team of interventional neurologists, and they get in there and they do all this stuff. So I'm sitting there. My quick side note, I'm picking up my family from Mexico, because Luke was just playing tennis. You know, that was the the personal part of it that we didn't get into, but just assume it's tennis. Eric Rieger  Assume it's basketball.Ken Brown  Yeah. So I called. I called the stroke rehab unit. And I spoke with them with the nurse. The manager, nurse and she was so cool. She's like, She's like, hey, yeah, blah blah blah Yeah, we were our rates are this. This is the protocol. I'm like, what's a protocol for diet? We don't have one. What's protocol for supplements? We don't have one  i'm like, Oh my goodness, let's look at this. So I called our secret weapon. And I started to get into it and it's a much bigger bite to chew off then we can do in this sort of quick episode. So this quick episode, I want to just focus on the endocannabinoid system and stroke. Because what we do with stroke victims is that we basically do everything wrong. Eric Rieger  I believe it. Ken Brown  In the hospital. Eric Rieger  Yeah. Ken Brown  And when I asked him, like, what is the typical diet? She's like low fat. Eric Rieger  What's the science behind that? Ken Brown  Exactly. And we know that the carbohydrates increase inflammation and this and that. I'm like, Well, what else and she's like you had traditionally everybody gets put on a Staten, which causes some brain inflammation, because we're chasing numbers on cholesterol. Anyways, keep listening, because we're going to end up doing another episode on we're going to develop a protocol that I hope everybody adapts, and the nurse was like, that would be amazing. nobody's talking like that. Because everybody has this hammer. I mean, we bring these people in, they have a stroke. And one of the most important things is sleep and what do we do just disrupt sleep, check vitals blood sugar, and all this other stuff. So basically, we focus up we focus on all this stuff. So I called a couple neurologists, and was like, Hey, man, what's the or Hey, woman? I don't want to be sexist here. I'm like, Hey, what are we doing here? What's going on with the you guys are crushing it. So basically they focus on the awesomeness science of clotbusters like tpas and blood thinners. And then they rush in with this incredible technology that is amazing. Where they get in and they do like cardiac clot, like the same thing that the cardiologists have been doing. That they end up just sort of extracting these clots and they just crazy stuff. It works, but then they don't think about anything else,. So here a gut check project. I feel like we check our egos at the door and we look and go, how can we do things a little bit better? I feel like that this conversation that we're having could be the beginning of something bigger. Sure. I feel like we're missing a ton of stuff. This is not to bash traditional medicine at all. This is just a glorious example of how medicine save lives. But unfortunately, if all you have is a hammer then everything's a nail. So we're going to go ahead and look at that today. Eric Rieger  Let's do it. Ken Brown  I'm gonna do one brief thing. Because we always do in in the news, we always do our personal lives in the news, mostly because it's a win for me. So I'm just whenever I find news that is pertinent to me, I'll talk about it. And I'll just kind of, like most people just sort of ignore the stuff that bothers you. Bottom line is a study just came out. Looking at coffee. Eric Rieger  Oh, I love coffee. Ken Brown  So February is Heart Month, right? Eric Rieger  It is. Ken Brown  So everyone talks about Heart Month, and we're strokes are almost parallel to heart. So the same vessels that can ruin your brain can ruin your heart. You're gonna die either way. Let's start fixing it. Eric Rieger  Yeah. Ken Brown  So a study came out this last Thursday. So just a few days ago, in a journal called PLOS biology that I follow, which always looks at like new and upcoming research, as it find it. As it turns out, we know that coffee is good in 2017. There was this big meta analysis that show that help with diabetes. And also helped with cardiovascular disease and different things like that. But we really never, we always thought it was the polyphenols. So these guys looked at this and they took mouse models. And what they showed is that the caffeine plays a role. Eric Rieger  Nice. Ken Brown  Yeah. In case you haven't guessed that I drink just tons of coffee. Eric Rieger  I didn't have to guess I see it all the time. Ken Brown  Alright, so anyways, they took mouse models, and what they showed is that when you drink four to five cups of coffee equivalent in caffeine, you actually improve the mitochondria in the heart cells. They even show that the mitochondria is that you know, it's the powerhouse of the cell. It's what makes you walk around. It's what drives every single cell they found a protein called p 27, which is stimulated by caffeine. And when they gave heart attacks to mice, and then they gave them coffee, the mice that got the coffee, or the caffeine equivalent, recovered quicker, knockout mice that they took away the P 27 protein or whatever, they all died of heart attacks. So quick little thing in the news, coffee good, helps diabetes helps heart disease. And now we realize that it improves mitochondria. So I got to thinking and I was like, wow, the whole mitochondria is our aging thing. I found an article where they looked at old an aging mice, the more caffeine that they took in during the day, the more that their mitochondria were younger, and it was an anti aging molecule. So polyphenols plus caffeine, it looks like.Eric Rieger  it's really interesting, brief note, and maybe we should even do a show about caffeine and the systemic effects because during anesthesia school, we talked about why caffeine does what it does, and the jitters. And essentially, the way it was explained to us and shown to us is that they didn't know the exact mechanism, but they could tell that the threshold that it took for like a neuron to fire was lessened. So what it does is it lowers threshold to elicit an action potential. It would make sense that somebody who's a little bit older, basically you're taking down the barrier. And now you've got demand making the mitochondria useful. I mean, it's...Ken Brown  Yeah, I like where you're going with that.Eric Rieger  It's all kind of systemic, we'll get to that. That sounds like a an interesting... Ken Brown  So that's just basically in the news Heart Month now we're doing this... Eric Rieger  And if you think this episode's fast, wait til we do the caffeine one.Ken Brown  So this is just one of those things where we're, we're trying some different stuff out but one of the biggest problems I had is I called the stroke center and they do not have a protocol. And then when I called the neurologists and and I said one thing I was like, have you guys ever thought about the endocannabinoid system, in your specialty.Eric Rieger  No, they haven't.Ken Brown  Not only No, it was a hard no with that BS. Eric Rieger  Sure. Yeah. Ken Brown  So rather than get an argument and like, we'll just do a show on it.Eric Rieger  Yeah, we will. Ken Brown  So this show should be titled the anti bs side of endocannabinoid system and stroke. Eric Rieger  Let's do it. Ken Brown  Alright. So, once again, geeky sorry, we've done two geeky shows in a row. We're gonna have to start having, you know, just playful things. We have to have a comedian on like Joe Rogan or something like that.Eric Rieger  Eventually.Ken Brown  Yeah. It's probably a little premature. Alright, so let's talk about the endocannabinoid system really quick. I'm gonna throw it to you, and I'm gonna let you just to describe to everybody what is the endocannabinoid system. Eric Rieger  The best application that we know today that I understand is it basically functions as a great communicator, between our nervous and our immune system. So you have these two systems and basically it functions as the regulator. It's the one that prevents one from being overstimulated and driving the other one to do something that you don't want it to do.Eric Rieger  100% So the way that I describe it to my patients, our endocannabinoid system is like any other system in our body, you have a cardiovascular and neurologic. The endocannabinoid system works like a traffic cop. And what it does is it says we need more inflammation here. Whoa, you're overreacting. Why don't you just calm down right over here? So keep that in mind, because as we talked about the endocannabinoid system, now we're going to talk about how does the endocannabinoid system relate to stroke. So unfortunately, we got to talk a little bit about strokes. And I like history you like history. So, Hippocrates, the father of medicine first recognized strokes over 2400 years ago, we got 2400 years to figure out how to fix this. At that time, they called it apo Plexi, which means struck down by violence. So 2400 years and to this day stroke still kill 140,000 Americans. That's one out of every 20 deaths. Eric Rieger  Wow. Ken Brown  Someone in the United States has a stroke every 40 seconds. That means every four minutes someone dies. Every year more than seven Well, let's just call it 800,000 people in the United States have a stroke. About 87% of all strokes are ischemic stroke. Which means it's decrease of blood flow. And $34 billion are lost every single year due to strokes. Stroke is a leading cause of serious long term disability, stroke reduces mobility in more than half of stroke survivors. So the, if the actual death is not shocking enough. It's your health span is reduced. And you and I always talk about lifespan versus health span...be healthy. So what I'm going to talk about right here is crazy that this is not being implicated. This is not are not implicated not not being used in the traditional sense.Eric Rieger  Gotcha. Eric Rieger  All right. So, right now, the cool science going on is that we've got all this intervention, we got labs, we got stroke centers. We did we're, I feel like we can do a whole episode on just the diet, the supplements, everything around lifestyle on a stroke. And we're going to do that just like we're gonna do the butyrate episode coming up and just like we're going to do, every time we get into a topic, we start digging deeper, and we learn a little bit more. So today, the fact that these neurologists are saying, oh, food is Bs, well, I'm just taking on the big 600 pound gorilla. I want to say, Well, I want to know what you're not even thinking about endocannabinoids are you? And they're like, that's really bs. Now we're gonna get into it. So it is there's tons of research in the animal model of how to target so this topic of this podcast is the endocannabinoid system and strokes. Holy cow, there's tons of data on this and we're not even talking about it. I'm at a, a world class Stroke Center. Where we save more people than like anyplace else. We've been given national recognition. If if you're the CEO of who owns our house, the old colombia The HCA HCA if you're the CEO of HCA, pay attention because I can say more people for you, because as it turns out, there's lots of confusing data out there. And I took the time to go ahead and look at some of this. It's really cool. Basically, we've already reviewed the endocannabinoid system. Now in this endocannabinoid system, there's two primary receptors. We're learning that there's more for the Wil Clydens of the world that are super smart, and they understand that there's a lot more than that or the Chris Kressors and people like that. But for the general public, there's two receptors, cb one and CB two, there are the traffic cops, right? So that's what we have to realize. So as we alter the endocannabinoid system through different things, we know that the endocannabinoid system is associated with Parkinson's disease. It's associated with Alzheimer's and multiple sclerosis. The only drug approved is epidiolex for seizures. This is part of the problem. It's the confusion of what's going on? People say what does the FDA say? Well, did you know that the FDA just missed their mark to present to Congress on February 20? No? Ken Brown  Yeah, they missed it. That's another news article. They did not come up with a consensus statement on CBD when they were mandated by Congress to do that, because everybody's so confused. Eric Rieger  Wow, you know, I didn't know that we should look into that.Ken Brown  And we know that in those studies of epidiolex, there was 86% side effects and all the things. So what I'm going to get into is the full spectrum, what we're looking at here, so stick with me here I know that I'm kind of bouncing around. What I'm trying to do is set the stage that the endocannabinoid system is intricately related to the disease known as a stroke or the event known as a stroke. So knowing that the endocannabinoid system is important in Parkinson's and in Alzheimer's, dementia and such like that, what we want to try and figure out is how is the endocannabinoid system related to similar things which is Parkinson's and dementia are inflammation in the brain. Well, the stroke is immediate inflammation. Alright, so CB one receptors. I say this only because the argument will come up will be like, well, I found some studies that showed that there were some studies looking at CB one receptors were when you had knockout mice, they did better. Other studies show that they did worse. Some said that this and that. And so I was going through all this literature going, this is silly. This is we don't really have a conclusion. So the bottom line is, think of it this way. And I will use a Will Klyden quote, it is a symphony. It is not one instrument. When you are looking at the endocannabinoid system, if you are just going to focus on one thing, which unfortunately researchers do because it's impossible to account for all the other variables, all I can say is CB one is intricately involved and it may be involved in a negative way. When it becomes a stroke. So if Your endocannabinoid system is not in tune. It can make it worse. Just like a symphony where you have the brass section which is just screwing it up. You've got the rest of the symphony playing Mozart and you've got some other people just kicking some cake. Eric Rieger  An orchestra with only symbols is not very entertaining. Ken Brown  No, it's not. So I bring this up because when you start trying to read it and debate it and look at it, you can be thrown curveballs. One of them is that and, but then you dig deeper. And there's all this literature on this instrument called CB two. Cb two is the other instrument, cb one, cb two are the two receptors. Now we're learning more about the endocannabinoid system, the data is much more straightforward on this. Basically, multiple rat models have shown that when you give an agonist or a CB two activator, both pre stroke and post stroke you decrease the amount of damage, so you can actually prevent what's going to happen. And then once it happens, you go, Oh, we need to stimulate that. Keep that in mind. Because to prove a point further, when CB two was blocked, the rats had tremendously more damage and they had residual effects. So just by saying the endocannabinoid system, and they're like, oh, it involves CB one, cb two, which is the top level that everybody talks about. The interplay is way more, you gotta let the body do what it wants to do. can't shut one off, you can't turn one on. You can't encourage you have to be able to let the body do what it wants to do.Eric Rieger  No, definitely. And that's, that's really not that different than lots of different drugs which they thought they pulled them out of racemic mixtures. And then what racemic mixture means is you've got two different variations of the same molecule and one's active and one isn't But then they learned that sometimes if you do one and try to isolate it, you actually caused damage. Whereas before, if you had them together, you didn't have that damage. And it's played that multiple times.Ken Brown  So clearly CB two receptors play a very key role. What I'm trying to prove here is that when we take these animals and we mess with these receptors, we either increase the damage or we decrease the damage. So the theory is that the endocannabinoid mediated modulation of the inflammatory process is the reason why people get better. So in other words, we always talk about inflammation. Now they're realizing that the CB two receptor mitigates the inflammatory process during an ischemic event. Eric Rieger  That's pretty important. Ken Brown  It's really wild. So now what actually interacts with these receptors? So if somebody's never heard these terms before, they're like, man, they're talking weird stuff. They're talking CB one, cb two, don't worry about that. Cb one, cb two are just two likeminded things that are trying to make you better. As it turns out, we can say this about every single system in the body there's going to be interactions, downplaying in the gastrointestinal system. Histamine will stimulate a cell which will produce gastrin, which will increase the acid production blah, blah, blah, we know this Eric Rieger  But histamine could, the same molecule on a different receptor could cause a completely different Ken Brown  100%. So why would the endocannabinoid system not be different than every other system? Eric Rieger  It's it sounds to me like it's very normal. Ken Brown  You know what I keep saying? We're gonna have Endocannabinoid ologists I'm gonna be the first endocannabinologist. I'm gonna get myself a title. So somebody had to be the first black belt or something. I mean, why don't I just rushed to be like? I'm It! I'm it! Eric Rieger  I'm the BBECS. Ken Brown  Yeah. Alright, so there's two endocannabinoids. What I mean is you make your own CBD. And those two things there's we're learning that there's lots of them. But for the basics it's anandamide and 2ag. So knowing that you have these two endogenous meaning two endocannabinoids that stimulate CB one and CB two now we're just learning what they do. Okay. So 2ag goes up dramatically following a stroke.Eric Rieger  So trying to do some damage control.Ken Brown  We don't know...Eric Rieger  We don't know...Ken Brown  We do know that when anandamide is the soft light that is always on when you go through a stressful event 2ag turns on switch the flashlight. So the feeling is that that 2ag is the fight or flight Endocannabinoid. Eric Rieger  Oh, okay. Ken Brown  Yeah, so when you need it, It ramps way up. In situations where there's cell damage, it doesn't know the difference that there's cell damage possibly it's ramping up because it's like we're in fight or flight mode. We're dying here. Eric Rieger  Where's the inflammation? Ken Brown  Yeah, so these guys are postulating that when you block 2AG, the stroke damages less. My feeling is well, what if it's doing something someplace else? Like, what if you needed that 2ag burst? So when you have fight or flight, you need it for different things. Sure. Some people would say, oh, you're having a fighter flight. You're being chased by a saber toothed Tiger your blood pressure's up. We should give you blood pressure medicine. No, it's the right thing that should be happening right now. Yeah, I need the blood pressure to pump the blood. So we know that that to ag is your fight or flight Endocannabinoid think of it that way the flashlight Anandamide is the one that you want up, that is the Eric Rieger  Parasympathetic, your rest and digest. Ken Brown  It's the it's not quite the parasympathetic one, but it's the one that is your baseline that should always be filled, that anandamide tank should always be filled. 2aG. We're gonna learn more about it in the future because we haven't studied that as much. But when you have 2ag around, blood flow gets reduced. So the damage is worse. And this is really interesting because when your baseline anandamide is low, your 2 a G will overshoot. Eric Rieger  Okay.Ken Brown  So they work like a seesaw. So if you can get them in balance, we always talked about balance and in sync. When your anadamide is full and your 2ag is full, they never really mess with each other. In a situation where you're depleted in your endocannabinoid system, then you will have the propensity to have too much 2Ag and your anandamide is in fight or flight and your endocannabinoids will keep producing the two AJ, Eric Rieger  That is very, very interesting. So in other words, what we want is to never be in a position where our our ECS is low on what it needs to function. Ken Brown  100% so anandamide we're now learning is probably the baseline Endocannabinoid that controls the day to day response that you're having. 2ag turns on when you need it to turn on. So, although the animal models show that 2ag increases significantly causes vasoconstriction and all this stuff, we're learning that okay, maybe, maybe this is my theory, the stress and the chronic disease. Listen to this one more time here, the stress and the chronic disease that led to a stroke. Meant that your anandamide was being depleted and your body was getting ready for the event. You're 2ag going up. So stress, lack of sleep, diet, all have been shown to decrease our anandamide levels, stress, lack of sleep and diet have all been shown to be linked to cardiac and stroke and every other event that we talked about Eric Rieger  Time and time again. Ken Brown  So when I grab a neurologist and I say, Have you ever thought about the endocannabinoid system, the religious stroke and they're like, that's BS. I'm being nice about how they said it to me. Are you kidding me? Eric Rieger  Well, it's...Ken Brown  we're missing this huge, giant piece.Eric Rieger  It's kind of sad because the research isn't it's not one paper. This is it's ubiquitous, it grows every single day. I think people have over the last 50 years have forgotten that innovation brought us to where we are now. I mean, we used to not have TPA we used to not have kumudin and we used to not have these things I mean it those were also new introductive things for us to figure out.Ken Brown  I was talking to somebody yesterday and they were like you know what's really skewed when you look back at like the the average lifespan when you when you factor out the deaths at birth people still live to like 60 and 70. Like, like, but there was so many things that killed babies Eric Rieger  Oh, you mean long ago, Ken Brown  Like long ago. So when I say that Hippocrates was describing strokes, and you know, 2000 years ago, whatever. But this is so fascinating because think about this, if you keep your anandamide levels optimal like adding Atrantil which blocks an enzyme that breaks down your own anandamide levels. That is something that we can look at, and I think that's part of the next episode. But when you take CBD, so our CBD product here, when you take a good quality CBD it doesn't even bind directly to CB one or CB two. We know that a full spectrum product has many cannabinoids and other molecules that bind to certain receptors. We also believe that CBD will play a role in helping the body to produce more of its own Endocannabinoids. So what I tell my patients is that if you take CBD, you're going to increase your own anandamide levels. You take CBD plus Atrantil, That's the signature package and you're going to make sure that you block the enzyme that breaks down your anandamide Eric Rieger  So it lasts longer. Ken Brown  So it lasts longer and the neurologists like there's no science in this. Okay? So I had to dig deeper, or our secret weapon dug deeper for me. In rat models, infusing CBD into the brains of rats significantly helped to decrease the amount of damage and help recover in stroke. Really CBD does nothing? They actually injected CBD into the brains of rats that they cause strokes. And it actually blocked the ischemic event. One to One. Crazy! Eric Rieger  That's noticeable. That's a reproducible event.Ken Brown  Then in another study, they showed that the blood brain barrier sealed its tight junction and decreased brain swelling post stroke when you gave them CBD, Eric Rieger  Which is huge. I mean, I know it sounds really, really technical, but trust me, that's not nothing.Ken Brown  Remember the whole reason that I'm even talking about this is because our friend Tim just called me and said, Hey, man, my dad's in rehab, and they're not saying anything. Well, it was shown that continued oral administration post stroke at one week, and one month reduced the volume of infarct and improved neuro behavior on autopsy. So they're taking this it showed that CBD reduced white matter injury reduced glial response, meaning that the cells did not react to it. And it increased BDNF.Eric Rieger  Which is what you need for repair.Ken Brown  You need that for repair. Shit! This is nuts. Yeah, we're over here saying that CBD isn't do anything where the endocannabinoid doesn't have it and I'm finding article after article and these guys are finding amazing data BDNF. If I the first thing I would do would be to the first thing I would do would be to put people we're going to come up with a whole protocol. And I'm gonna go to HCA and don't be like, everybody that has a frickin stroke needs ABCD and one of them's gonna be frickin CBD. This is ridiculous.Eric Rieger  We've got some opportunity, though. And not everybody's closed, we could probably find a couple of neurologists around here in the area that are at least willing to fairly examine data and dive in. And that's what we'll have to do.Ken Brown  We're gonna end up having to go into this. I mean, the fact that I called my own Stroke Center, and the nurse sheepishly said, Well, you know, they do the usual things that put them on a low fat diet, and I stopped her. Which, by the way, it's really cool, because when I called up, I was picking Lucas up and I was like, yeah, hey, it was nurse manager. And she's like, Yeah, and I said, I said, Yeah, this is, this is Dr. Brown. Do you have moment to ask couple questions. She's like, sure what patient is that? Regarding? I'm like, now I just wanna ask some questions. And she stopped. She goes the GI Doctor said, Yeah, she's like, oh, like, what do you mean uh Oh, she's like, I've seen your show. I'm a little scared what you're gonna ask. I'm like alright and so that's how we got this talk. So right now new models are looking at immediate administration of CBD and hyperthermia. So somebody out there is saying, if we make them cold and give them CBD, and it seems to be a synergistic effect Eric Rieger  Wasn't that long ago, people thought that making the body cold was a bunch of Hocus Pocus crap, too, right? It really wasn't that long ago. And so now we've returned to its natural element, all we're doing is reducing body temperature. But however long ago it was, I can remember people saying, Well, you know, they're trying the cryo, and at first like, hey, maybe it works. And then suddenly, we saw lack of decrease in loss of neural function, you know, make believers.Ken Brown  So I want to play devil's advocate, and we talked last time that we're going to do some sort of like contest. Here's the contest, for the listeners. All right. There is a reference when I was looking at all this stuff, one reference, there was an article on stroke in cannabis ingestion, where they said that cannabis ingestion increases the incidence of stroke. So and then I went and found the article and realized there's a lot of other factors associated with that, much like the FDA article that we did on liver failure. It's very much like that. But the FDA is using an article like that and ignoring everything that I just said. And they're using that. So what I propose is and you figured out, you're the you're the techie guy, let's do some sort of giveaway where if somebody the first person that messages us in one way or another email, Instagram, Facebook,Eric Rieger  Paul we're gonna need help with that, Ken Brown  yeah, snail mail, whatever, I don't know. I just explained what I think shows that the endocannabinoid system is intricately related to strokes and how we can improve it and in some ways if you try and mess with it, make it worse. Eric Rieger  So let's I know we did a quick episode but let's just do a quick rundown to make sure that everybody who's listening or watching can make their own crib notes. So, essentially, before and after a stroke, you can prepare your body for better recovery or prevention of the stroke itself that comes from having a healthy endocannabinoid system your ECS. So the bottom line is that there's tons of supporting evidence that exists for the involvement of the endocannabinoid system and the pathology of a stroke. Now clearly, this is super complex and we're just getting into it. And these researchers that are coming up with conflicting data about trying to block CB one or trying to agonize CB two, don't, don't do that what we really need to do is just make sure let your body do what it wants to do, when there is sufficient anandamide, which is the one that we know really kind of helps out, it will work like a traffic cop and keep the receptors in check. 2ag is probably necessary for certain things. In this episode, Dr Frankel gives me the run down on how he provides dosed, predictable cannabis medicine to his patients to help them manage the side effects of conventional treatment. Plus he shares the specific formula he uses to calculate the right dosage.  We discuss the anti-cancer properties of cannabis along with Dr Frankel’s own clinical experience of cannabis as an effective cancer treatment. We talk specifically about the benefits of whole plant cannabis vs isolates, and how the cannabinoids tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) can help manage pain, treat nausea and vomiting, and treat the anxiety that goes along with fighting cancer.  So if you’re considering adding cannabis to your alternative treatment protocol, this episode is a must-see.   What led you to become a cannabis doctor? Was it your intention to work with cancer patients? Got a virus that went to his heart and was given 6 months to live without a heart transplant Went to LA and friends introduced him to cannabis plants which immediately improved his mood and reduced anxiety. Within weeks he was running up the stairs After this experience, started studying cannabis and its medicinal properties.  Are you seeing mostly cancer patients? About a third are cancer patients The dosing for anti-cancer is based on treating side effects of chemo Dr Frankel follows low dose protocol used in clinical trials. Total of 130mg daily (30-40mg of CBD, THC, THCA and CBD A)  Acid molecules (THCA and CBDA) are gaining more attention due to specific anti-cancer properties What’s the difference between hemp and cannabis? The level of THC. Cannabis contains more than 0.3% THC, hemp is 0.3% or less Dr Frankel recommends using the whole plant rather than stripping out a single molecule Is oil the only option when it comes to therapeutic use of cannabis? Salves can be used for pain and neuropathy 30mg or more of whole plant CBD to prevent neuropathy THCV reverses neuropathy 30-40mg daily of each of the four cannabinoids is a good all round anti-cancer, anti-pain, anti-nausea treatment  Can you explain the dosing in more depth? The actual THC or CBD in 1 gram of cannabis oil is around 750gm. The other 250mg is made up of other cannabinoids DIY Formula to produce a reliable dosing tincture of 20mg per milliliter You have 750mg or 75% CBD oil If you want to take 20mg CBD a day then divide 750 by 20 Take this amount of a thin oil like MCT, coconut or olive oil and dissolve your ‘gram’ of CBD oil in it You now have 20 mg of CBD per milliliter of your oil mix Take ½ a milliliter 3 times per day  More cost effective to dose this way If we have an internal cannabinoid system, does this mean we should regularly consume them? Endocannabinoid system was developed 1.2 billion years ago, well before the plant-based cannabinoid system (fibrocannabiods)  Any species with a spine has an endocannabinoid system  The effects of cannabinoids on the endocannabinoid system can be measured Anandamide, one of the components of our endocannabinoid system helps monitor and control cancer.  Cannabinoids can bump up our endocannabinoid system and this promotes cell apoptosis, autophagy etc of cancer cells Most common symptoms of endocannabinoid deficiency is migraines, bowel problems. Fibromyalgia, anxiety, disrupted sleep. More common in females What type of cancer patients do you see? Most patients are on conventional treatment protocols alongside cannabis Ballpark of patients who do well on cannabis alone would be 2 out of 3 Lower dose chemotherapy combined with cannabis to mitigate side effects and toxicity  Can cannabis prevent long-term chemotherapy side effects? THCV can prevent and reverse neuropathy  CBD is protective of the brain and kidneys What is THCV?  Only available in California Raises your mood - treats depression Mix with THC to treat migraines.  Shown a reduction in symptoms and ability to stop progression of parkinsons in animal studies CBDA - best to treat nausea THCA and CBD - bladder problems, repairs mitochondria, treats myasthenia gravis How much do you take into account strains? We don’t know enough about strains Strains are defined by the other flavinoids, plant waxes and other molecules What are your thoughts on high dose RSO (Rick Simpson Oil)? Sometimes people have good initial response with high dose then cancer comes back Some people do well on RSO Cannabis is a bimodal drug and has opposite effects with high vs low dose 1gm dose is a very high dose - potentially toxic levels Studies of low does (30mg daily) cannabis show great results Do you see children in your practice? What considerations do you make when it comes to kids? See autistic kids on anti-psychotics, ADHD kids on amphetamines and benzos  Cannabis much better options than these drugs How would you dose a child? Doesn’t dose by weight - start lower and see how it goes Are there any interactions or complications you are aware of? Cannabis and pharmaceuticals - depends on the dosing, type of cannabis and how it’s taken Oral is biggest issue as both go through the liver Whole plant medicine is different from isolate - dosage is lower Biggest concern with isolates is that we may see more drug interactions Any last comments? Ivor Cummins is a Biochemical Engineer who in 2012 was disturbed by a set of his own abnormal blood test results. Consultation with multiple doctors yielded little insight into the cause of his elevated cholesterol, ferritin and GGT so he turned to his analytical roots to study the problem. In the process, he evaluated hundreds of scientific papers, ultimately concluding that that flawed hypotheses and a breach of the scientific method have resulted in the current “diabesity” epidemic. Eric Fisher of Mindful Improv - How do you balance Chaos and Structure?

(0-5 minutes) Eric introduces himself and explains his current passion which is mindful improv. He teaches groups of people how to respond mindfully to social situations. He explains some exercises that he uses at the beginning of class. He talks about how he helps beginners get through initial blocks and past their fears of opening up in front of an audience. Stewart then brings up his experience as a beginner in Salsa and how when we begin anything we are only aware of a small fraction of the stimuli that is being presented to us. After we start to improve whole new layers of awareness open up. (5-10 minutes) Eric explains how he views teaching and how its really important to impart to new students only one thing about what they are learning. He has people focus on their emotional experience. Whether they are fearful or excited? This brings people into how they are feeling now. He says that mindful improv is about helping people develop a practice of it not only in the class itself but in their lives as well. Stewart brings up how this is one of the most important parts of a meditation practice as well: to bring the practice into daily life. Eric explains how he has been practicing disciplined mindfulness practices for several years now and has taken notes. He shows how no matter how much we practice some things just continuously come up and we have to learn how to deal with these issues and not wish them away. We talk about how Eric doesn't really have a formal practice and that he really tries to bring the practice into daily life. He mentions that many friends of his try to convert him into a formal meditation practice. From Eric's perspective, he is already aware, at least a little bit, in everyday life. Awareness is always present so its a better practice to just heighten that awareness in everyday life as opposed to setting off a time where we do it. (10-15 minutes) Stewart mentions how historically he would have disagreed with Eric about the necessity of having a daily formal sitting meditation practice, but how over the last couple years he has started to see it differently. Any technique is just a crutch that makes the conditions more favorable to drop into a meditative state. The meditative state is what we are looking to engender, not the technique. Humans have a way of turning positives experiences into stable beliefs, but these beliefs are not accurate indicators of reality. Eric mentions that culture itself is a byproduct of these stable beliefs. He explains the process of ego development in a young child. The infant starts off as just pure consciousness. There is no separation between the baby and its environment. The baby just is. As it starts to develop, the baby takes on communication with the family and starts to develop a sense of self. The baby starts to develop likes and dislikes. At some point, the individual then becomes conscious of this conditioning and they have an opportunity to make a shift to say "Oh now I'm an individual and I am on my own". In reality its difficult to do this because the process of the individual's relationship to the environment continues. We are always conditioned to the environment around us. There is no separate self. Eric goes on to explain how formal sitting practice might be helpful for someone who has a 9-5 job and needs a sense of structure to their practice to make it stick. Eric doesn't have this life. He talks about how his schedule is very erratic. Stewart mentions that he often finds himself in a state of friction and that its difficult to remember in those times that those times are necessary for the creative times. Eric mentions the cult of working hard that is endemic in the startup world. He believes that this type of deification of work is unnecessary. He mentions that most work and conversation are worthless and busywork. (15-20 minutes) Eric mentions the importance of being clear from the outset as to what the people working on a task are doing. He says that many of his friends are working long hours in something that they supposedly like, but then end up totally drained at the end of the week. He talks about how work environments lead to people stealing energy from each other. He mentions that with his company Mindful Improv, he teaches people how to share energy with each other which leads to lots of exponential benefits. We drastically switch topics to how Eric uses marijuana to improve his meditation practice. He says that it helps him to do problem-solving and increases his sensitivity. He talks about his personality and how he tends to always be in problem-solving mode. He says other people used to tell him that he overanalyzes anything and he agrees, but at the same time, it is a gift as well. Weed helps him tap into this more frequently. (20-25 minutes) Stewart asks Eric whether he has any negative aspects of his marijuana use. He says that after intense analyzation and note taking he can't find any real drawbacks to its use. Sometimes he has to police his use and he checks in to see whether it is a problem, but he hasn't been able to find any. Stewart explains about the endocannabinoid system and how its the oldest system in the body. It reacts directly with cannabinoids or cannabis. An Israeli researcher found something called Anandamide when researching cannabis and named it after Ananda, or the unconditional bliss that arises once you tap into a meditative state. Anandamide naturally occurs in the body, but if the endocannabinoid system doesn't produce it naturally due to trauma or other conditions, the body can react favorably to cannabis. Stewart talks about plant medicines and how they make it clear that we are not separate selves and we are in a constant relationship with the outside environment. Eric brings up how the cells in our body are constantly changing. We bring it back to Mindful improv and how relationship is really important and maybe one of the most important places to bring mindfulness into. Conversation is not a real thing. They are symbols of reality. They are not reality itself. Language is a construct that humans created. Eric explains how his sense of self developed. He never felt like he fit in with the kids at school. He never liked the noise. Kids usually create an identity for you. This leads to a sense of self and kids who are bullied usually need to develop a protective shell by becoming what they think they are as opposed to what the other kids say. 25-30 minutes Eric talks about how the ego develops and how we find ourselves in romantic relationships with people who fall in love with the false ego we have created. Then when the partner starts to change from the thing that we fall in love with, we fall out of love with them because they aren't the person we fell in love with. Stewart brings up how the sense of self is changing just like everything else, as much Buddhist wisdom points to. Everything is impermanent. Eric brings up the fact that many humans are tied to an emotional connection with people and people are balls of emotional baggage. It's important to be careful with those we choose to be an emotional connection with because everyone has stuff going on beneath the surface. Stewart starts to tell his story of how he created his sense of self as an overweight nice kid who people liked, but was a bit of a loner and awkward. At the age of 19, he started smoking cannabis and his diet changed radically. Eric says "shouldn't you have eaten more because of the munchies". Stewart explains how he started to change his diet based on the input of cannabis. After Stewart lost the weight people treated him very differently. (30-35 minutes) Eric also has a similar story but with different storylines. He was thin and people treated him that way. He brings up the idea that its hard to tell what other people see when they look at us. Stewart asks about Eric's practice and whether he has any practices that have to do with the breath. He says that anxiety is excitement without the breath and that for much of his life he hasn't been breathing. He explains that he moved to San Diego and he took four months to just focus on breathing, weightlifting, yoga, and eating. He gained 16 pounds of muscle which went away right after he changed his diet. He tapped into a different way of breathing underneath the anxious breath. Weightlifting and yoga taught him how to find this deeper breath. He found this breath quite liberating because he decided to take this time after getting tired of constantly over analyzing everything. He could take all the energy of trying to analyze everything and just focus on being here now. Stewart asks Eric whether he has any practices currently. Eric explains how he is now done with a five-year challenge where he moved to a new place every 6 months and practiced creating a new version of himself. He would meet totally new people and developed a new sense of self based on these new relationships with other people. Stewart explains his own experience living in new countries for a year at a time and then came back to integrate it and then repeat in a new country. This experience allowed him to form a new more confident self who wasn't trapped by the boxes that other people placed him in. He became more confident and ready to take on challenges. The most difficult thing about this is coming back to family and having a total reversal of all this to come back and play the old family dynamics. (35-40 minutes) Eric explains how Boulder is great for him because he has a fast paced mind and Boulder is slowed. He can't live in fast-paced places because it's too intense. He had a moment in New York where he realized that he isn't even there when he is there. He says New York is a place of human doing, not of human beings. He says that in Boulder people are ok with just being. Stewart asks Eric about the most important thing going on in his life right now. Eric says that a wise friend once told him that there are three phases in your life that you must go through. Number 1 is to figure out who you are. Number 2 is to figure out where you want to be. Number 3 is who you want to come along. Stewart asks Eric about the balance between chaos and rigidity and how he deals with it. Eric says that mindful improv brings a lot of chaos into that. The ego creates rigidity. If you have a strong ego it makes it difficult to adapt to change. This applies to companies as well. He brings up that humans are the most adaptable species on earth. Stewart brings up a theory from "Sapiens" about how grains and other vegetables used humans to make themselves more widespread.

Consume foods like milk and corn, since they contain tryptophan, a substance that your body converts to serotonin. Other carbohydrates also contain tryptophan. Do a low-intensity workout, since your body produces serotonin when it is performing aerobic exercise, as opposed to the endorphins it produces during anaerobic exercise.     Endorphins. - Ways to increase your endorphin levels: • Exercise to cope with chronic pain.• Eat spicy food, since your tongue has receptors that react to spice by sending messages to your brain that are similar to pain signals, causing your brain to trigger the release of endorphins.   Endocannabinoids: “The Bliss Molecule” Endocannabinoids are self-produced cannabis that work on the CB-1 and CB-2 receptors of the cannabinoid system. Anandamide (from the Sanskrit “Ananda” meaning Bliss) is the most well known endocannabinoid. Interestingly, at least 85 different cannabinoids have been isolated from the Cannabis plant. The assumption is that each of these acts like a key that slips into a different lock of the cannabinoid system and alters perceptions and states of consciousness in various ways. It is likely that we self-produce just as many variations of endocannabinoids, but it will take neuroscientists decades to isolate them. Dopamine: “The Reward Molecule” Dopamine is responsible for reward-driven behavior and pleasure seeking. Every type of reward seeking behavior that has been studied increases the level of dopamine transmission in the brain. If you want to get a hit of dopamine, set a goal and achieve it.   Oxytocin: “The Bonding Molecule” Oxytocin is a hormone directly linked to human bonding and increasing trust and loyalty.  In some studies, high levels of oxytocin have been correlated with romantic attachment. Some studies show if a couple is separated for a long period of time, the lack of physical contact reduces oxytocin and drives the feeling of longing to bond with that person again. But there is some debate as to whether oxytocin has the same effect on men as it does on women. In men, vasopressin (a close cousin to oxytocin) may actually be the “bonding molecule.” But again, the bottom line is that skin-to-skin contact, affection, love making and intimacy are key to feeling happy.   In a cyber world, where we are often ‘alone together’ on our digital devices, it is more important than ever to maintain face-to-face intimate human bonds and ‘tribal’ connections within your community. Working out at a gym, in a group environment or having a jogging buddy is a great way to sustain these human bonds and release oxytocin.   In a 2003 study, oxytocin levels rose in both the dog and the owner after time spent ‘cuddling’. The strong emotional bonding between humans and dogs may have a biological basis in oxytocin. If you don’t have another human being to offer you affection and increase oxytocin your favorite pet can also do the trick.   Endorphin: “The Pain-Killing Molecule” The name Endorphin translates into “self-produced morphine."  Endorphins resemble opiates in their chemical structure and have analgesic properties. Endorphins are produced by the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus during strenuous physical exertion, sexual intercourse and orgasm. Make these pursuits a part of your regular life to keep the endorphins pumping.   Endorphins are linked less to ‘Runner’s High’ now than endocannabinoids, but are connected to the ‘feeling no pain’ aspect of aerobic exercise and are produced in larger quantities during high intensity ‘anaerobic’ cardio and strength training.   In 1999, clinical researchers reported that inserting acupuncture needles into specific body points triggers the production of endorphins. In another study, higher levels of endorphins were found in cerebrospinal fluid after patients underwent acupuncture.  Acupuncture is a terrific way to stimulate the release of endorphins.   GABA: “The Anti-Anxiety Molecule” GABA is an inhibitory molecule that slows down the firing of neurons and creates a sense of calmness. You can increase GABA naturally by practicing yoga, meditation or “The Relaxation Response.”  Benzodiazepines (Such as Valium and Xanax) are sedatives that work as anti-anxiety medication by increasing GABA. These drugs have many side effects and risks of dependency but are still widely prescribed. A study from the "Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine" found a 27% increase in GABA levels among yoga practitioners after a 60-minute yoga session when compared against participants who read a book for 60 minutes. The study suggests yoga might increase GABA levels naturally.   Serotonin: “The Confidence Molecule” Serotonin plays so many different roles in our bodies that it is really tough to tag it. For the sake of practical application I call it “The Confidence Molecule.” Ultimately the link between higher serotonin and a lack of rejection sensitivity allows people to put themselves in situations that will bolster self-esteem, increase feelings of worthiness and create a sense of belonging. To increase serotonin, challenge yourself regularly and pursue things that reinforce a sense of purpose, meaning and accomplishment.  Being able to say "I did it!" will produce a feedback loop that will reinforce behaviors that build self esteem and make you less insecure and create an upward spiral of more and more serotonin.   A variety of popular anti-depressants are called Serotonin-Specific Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) — these are well known drugs like Prozac, Celexa, Lexapro, Zoloft, etc. The main indication for SSRIs is clinical depression, but SSRIs are frequently prescribed for anxiety, panic disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), eating disorders, chronic pain, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).   Adrenaline: “The Energy Molecule” Adrenaline, technically known as epinephrine, plays a large role in the fight or flight mechanism. The release of epinephrine is exhilarating and creates a surge in energy. Adrenaline causes an increase in heart rate, blood pressure, and works by causing less important blood vessels to constrict and increasing blood flow to larger muscles. An “Epi-Pen” is a shot of epinephrine used in the treatment of acute allergic reactions.   An ‘adrenaline rush’ comes in times of distress or facing fearful situations. It can be triggered on demand by doing things that terrify you or being thrust into a situation that feels dangerous. You can also create an adrenaline rush by taking short rapid breathes and contracting muscles. The human body produces vitamin D when exposed to the sun's rays, and research suggests that people who are deficient in the vitamin are more likely to be depressed, anxious, and tired. Step into the sunshine for 20 to 25 minutes of sunlight to lighten your mood naturally. Try meditation DMF: Guided meditation, mantra meditation Mindfulness breathing Headspace and calm Good news: Meditation is a proven stress-buster with no harmful side effects. Studies have shown that its benefits range from pain reduction and lower blood pressure to a boost in libido. Best part? It releases "happy" chemicals in the brain—serotonin, dopamine, and endorphins—all of which work together to put you in a better mood. If you don't know where to start, try a guided meditation to de-stress or start your morning.   Smell the oranges DMF essential oils Citrus scents, such as orange, lemon, and grapefruit bring out positive chemical reactions in your brain as well as work to ease stress. If you want to feel uplifted, use a few drops of citrus essential oil on your pressure points. You can also mix the scent with a floral aroma such as jasmine to increase the positive effects.   Eat carbs as an afternoon snack You know that afternoon mood slump that hits at just the worst time? Well, it turns out that you can eat your way to a happier, more energized afternoon—carbs. For years we've been hearing that we should avoid carbs, but in reality, a low-carb diet can make us feel sad and stressed. Carbohydrates actually boost mood-boosting chemicals in the brain. But let's get something straight here—we want to focus on healthy, whole-grain sources instead of refined carbohydrates to reap the benefits. When you begin to feel down, go for an afternoon snack of 25 to 30 grams of carbs, such as a three-quarter-cup serving of Cheerios.   Play with your pet Having a dog or cat can seriously improve your quality of life—their excitement in seeing you come home and their unyielding loyalty make them great companions. There are a host of reasons why pets improve your health, but they can turn around a bad mood and make you happier in no time. A study found that petting a dog for only 15 minutes releases serotonin, prolactin, and oxytocin—all of which are mood-enhancing hormones, while lowering the stress hormone cortisol.   Take microbreaks Research shows that people who take quick breaks during their workday to watch funny videos online get a high emotional payoff and report feeling more energetic and happy with fewer negative emotions. Not only will this improve your mental health overall; this is an easy way to turn around a bad mood in less than a minute—plus, you can get a metabolism boost, too!   Add turmeric to your meal The active compound in turmeric, curcumin, has natural antidepressant qualities. You may already be adding turmeric to your meals because of its vast whole-body health benefits, such as lessening the effects of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and other inflammatory conditions, as well as fighting Alzheimer's disease and diabetes. Animal studies have also linked curcumin to an increase in serotonin and dopamine, so it's a powerful way to boost your mood.   Listen to music... Have you ever heard a song over the radio that just felt good? Or have you turned on an old CD only to find a flood of happy memories come streaming back? Well, that's due to the fact that music is a mood-booster. It releases the feel-good chemical dopamine into your system and brings on nostalgia.   ...And sing along You can also get happy by making your own music—by singing. University of Manchester researchers discovered that a tiny organ in the inner ear (called the sacculus) is connected to a part of your brain that registers pleasure. The sacculus registers frequency notes that are associated with singing almost instantly, giving you a warm and fuzzy feeling. So go ahead and sing in the shower, belt it out in your car, or get up on that karaoke stage.   Eat chocolate (yes!) While you might not need another excuse to eat more chocolate, here's another: It makes us happier. Chocolate contains tryptophan, which boosts the production of serotonin in the brain, leading to better moods. This trick also works with other foods containing tryptophan, such as poultry and eggs.   Drink coffee This morning energy boost doubles as a mood pick-me-up. A Harvard University study found that women who drank at least two cups of coffee regularly were at a 15% lower risk of depression than women who did not. Just keep in mind that those fancy coffee drinks can have tons of hidden sugar and calories, so it's best to stick with black coffee (and some skim milk).   Sip on some green tea Green tea already boasts an impressive résumé of health benefits. Thanks to the polyphenols it contains, green tea helps with weight loss by boosting metabolism, as well as providing a reduced risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, certain cancers, and osteoporosis. But for your mood? Green tea has been shown to reduce stress levels. A study found that people who drank five or more cups of green tea per day had a 20% lower level of stress than those who drank less than one.   Make a human connection Put down your smartphone and take a step back from your computer screen. If you want to feel better—and fast—go to a friend or family member for some relief. A study from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found that human touch releases those feel-good chemicals like serotonin, as well as reduces blood pressure and heart rate making you feel more relaxed.   Consume healthy fats You know how avocados are some of the most pleasurable foods to eat, with their rich taste and smooth, decadent texture? That's a mood-booster on its own, but research also suggests that their fat content is also the reason why they better our mood. Because fat slows digestion, it evens our blood sugar levels leaving us to feel calm and satisfied. So go ahead and treat yourself to some avocado or nuts next time you're feeling anxious.   Eat more salmon Fatty fish like salmon is high in omega-3 fatty acids, which can help stave off depression (omega-3s are also present in avocados and nuts, as well as grass-fed beef and chicken). This is because they help to maintain brain function in the areas that regulate mood and emotion—a study found that women who hate fish two times per week had a 25% lower risk of depression than women who ate it less often. If you don't like to eat fish, try taking omega-3 fish oil supplements instead.   Try St. John's wort WARNING! This herbal supplement is one of the most-studied herbal supplements for depression, and research shows that it may be as beneficial as antidepressants when treating mild depression. While it may seem like a no-brainer, St. John's wort has known serious drug interactions, including reducing the effectiveness of birth control. Additionally, when taken in conjunction with antidepressants, the supplement can create too-high levels of serotonin, which can lead to heart problems. So before you try this one, be sure to check in with your doctor.

The complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a disabling neuropathic pain condition that may develop following injuries of the extremities. The pathogenesis of this syndrome is not clear; however, it includes complex interactions between the nervous and the immune system resulting in chronic inflammation, pain and trophic changes. This interaction may be mediated by chronic stress which is thought to activate the endogenous cannabinoid (endocannabinoid) system (ECS). We conducted an open, prospective, comparative clinical study to determine plasma level of the endocannabinoid anandamide by high-performance liquid chromatography and a tandem mass spectrometry system in 10 patients with CRPS type I versus 10 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. As compared to healthy controls, CRPS patients showed significantly higher plasma concentrations of anandamide. These results indicate that the peripheral ECS is activated in CRPS. Background: Endogenous ligands of cannabinoid receptors ( endocannabinoids), in particular anandamide ( arachidonylethanolamide), have been recognized as being of crucial importance in a variety of physiological functions. Plasma concentrations of anandamide have been measured in a number of investigations; however, discrepant data on "normal'' anandamide plasma concentrations were reported. Since this might be caused by pre-analytical variables, we investigated the impact of different sample handling conditions on measured plasma anandamide concentrations. Methods: Blood samples were taken from healthy volunteers in EDTA- or heparin-containing tubes; whole blood samples were kept at +4 degrees C, room temperature, or 37 degrees C, respectively, for up to 120 min before obtaining plasma by centrifugation. Plasma anandamide concentrations were measured by an isotope-dilution liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry ( LC-MS/MS) method. Results: A marked time- and temperature-dependent increase in plasma anandamide concentrations ex vivo was observed in both EDTA- and heparin-containing tubes. Mean anandamide concentrations approximately doubled when EDTA samples were kept at 4 degrees C for 60 min before centrifugation {[}immediately centrifuged, 1.3 mg/L ( SD 0.3 mg/L); 2.8 mg/L ( SD 0.5 mg/L) after storage for 60 min; n=12). After storage of heparinized whole-blood samples for 120 min at 37 degrees C, a mean plasma anandamide concentration of 11.9 mg/L ( SD 1.8 mg/L) was found. In cell-free plasma, no increase in anandamide concentrations was found. Conclusion: Anandamide is released from blood cells ex vivo at a very high rate; therefore, strictly standardized pre-analytical protocols have to be applied for plasma anandamide determination.
