Another warm one today with a high of 80°…up near 90 on Friday. Uffdah. Because of Doc's schedule, we bumped our usual spot with Grant Bilse of the Wisco Sports Show from yesterday to today. Always great to talk to him! We also discussed some things to look forward to in the month of October as we officially turn the page in our calendars. Plus, our Week 5 Pigskin Picks for the upcoming NFL schedule. We let you know what's on TV today/tonight. Talked about the trailer for the new BBC documentary about Ozzy Osbourne, and we heard about the largest win in "Wheel of Fortune" history! America rules supreme when it comes to cheese, thanks to a woman from Philly! And check out this wildlife photographer who's made it his mission to help rehome hermit crabs that are currently living in trash instead of a seashell. In sports, we talked about yesterday's kickoff to the MLB Wild Card round, looked at the schedule for the NFC North teams, and we also chatted about the NCAA Women's Final Four making the move to Indy. Plus, the Vegas Aces beat the Indiana Fever to move on to the WNBA Finals, and Kirill & the MN Wild agree to a massive contract extension. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a couple that's getting divorced because their pets cannot get along, a robbery suspect who was arrested when a news crew doing a story about the robbery he allegedly committed spotted him, a couple in Rhode Island who both got arrested for DUI on the same night...two hours apart, and the latest from Sheriff Grady Judd.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Portland, Oregon is brewing a star. At 6'3", Jayla Lackey is a two-way force who's turning heads across the country—equal parts poised playmaker and relentless competitor. If you haven't heard the name yet, you will. Soon.Jayla fell for the game around age 11–12, joining ML20 and sharpening her skills under coaches Joy and DeMarcus Best. With a high motor on defense and a fearless approach on offense, she's become a matchup problem anywhere she plays.Traveling with ML20, Jayla's gone toe-to-toe with elite competition nationwide. “You have to be fearless,” she says—and her calm under pressure proves it. That poise is backed by real work: reps, film, and nonstop development.“I attack on offense, I can shoot, and I make good plays,” Jayla says. Her calling card is defense—ML20's identity is to turn stops into easy buckets. “Defense wins games,” a Joy Best mantra Jayla has fully embraced. She's adding range, too. The mid-range is coming together, and she's stretching to the three—the kind of growth that makes a good player scary.Jayla calls her ML20 teammates a second family. “We know each other's strengths and weaknesses. That chemistry helps us play better together.” It showed with a Final Four run at Power 24, and the group keeps trending up.At Benson Polytechnic, Jayla's focused on restoring championship expectations. “Win league—and chase state.” Simple goal. Big energy.Colleges and scouts have taken notice. Jayla's checklist for the next level: a family environment, elite development, and a program that will prepare her for the WNBA and overseas opportunities. “I want to play for my country, too. That's the dream.”Balance matters. Jayla loves music, drawing, reading, and time with family and friends.Playlist: SZA, Drake, Kendrick LamarPortland eats: Screen Door (chicken & waffles) and Noho's (short ribs + mac salad)

Stanford Final Four guard, pro vet, and USA Basketball 3x3 U23 coach Christina Batastini joins Cory to deliver clear, no-nonsense guidance for families navigating prep school basketball. Now the head coach at St. Andrew's School (NEPSAC AAA), Christina breaks down what truly translates to college—defending your position, decision-making, and making teammates better—and why the Ivy League is real Division I basketball. She explains the prep vs AAU recruiting dynamic, the difference between offers and interest, and how the transfer portal has shifted commitment timelines (and why late spring/summer decisions are increasingly normal). You'll also hear how reclassing or a post-grad year can be used strategically—without forcing a path that doesn't fit the student-athlete. If you want practical answers on exposure, academic fit, and the right level (AAA/AA vs A), this conversation keeps the hype out and the player development in.

In this episode of their Serving Up Pitt volleyball podcast, Post-Gazette insider Abby Schnable and former Panthers player Cat Flood break down the team's performances from the past week, which includes a statement sweep over No. 3 Kentucky and victories over Pepperdine and Jacksonville. Did this Pitt team announce its arrival on the national stage after beating Kentucky so handily? Have the Panthers found their footing after a rough start to the season that included two straight losses? How does this win shift their perspective in the national rankings? For the Kentucky game specifically, what does it mean for the team that it didn't have to overly rely on Olivia Babcock, as Dagmar Mourits and Blaire Bayless each also finished with at least nine kills? How are contributions from Bre Kelley and Ryla Jones helping? And what does it say about Dan Fisher's squad that it was able to hold its composure in those close sets against the Wildcats despite boasting a host of new players? Our duo answers those questions and more.

We've reached the semifinal round at the US Open, and journalist Chris Oddo joins the podcast to break down all the drama in New York. The TennisNow and USOpen.org writer recaps Novak Djokovic's quarterfinal win over Taylor Fritz, and explains how the Serbian legend continues to reach the business end of slams at age 38. Oddo dives into the brilliance of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner as they advanced to the Final Four with ease, Felix Auger Aliassime's major breakthrough, and the unfortunate fortnight for the American men. Oddo also dives into the women's draw which has featured plenty of excellent tennis and feel-good storylines. The journalist analyzes how Amanda Anisimova was able to avenge a brutal loss in the Wimbledon Final and defeat Iga Swiatek in New York, and he summarizes why Naomi Osaka's return to the final weekend of a grand slam is something truly special. And Oddo previews all the semifinal matchups including a rematch of last year's women's final as Aryna Sabalenka faces off against Jessica Pegula, and a transcendent, cross-generational matchup between Alcaraz and Djokovic. Hosted by Mitch Michals.

Devrinn Paul is entering his third year as the head coach of the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's basketball team in the 2025-26 season. Paul has guided Rose-Hulman to a combined 24 wins in his first two seasons as head coach after the program won just 23 games over the previous four seasons combined. In his inaugural season in Terre Haute, Paul guided the Fighting' Engineers to a 10-win improvement over the previous season. Paul has been a member of the coaching staff at three Division One institutions, including Louisville, Cincinnati and Marshall. His stop at Louisville included two trips to the Final Four. Paul recently wrote, edited and released, on May 1, 2025, his first book titled “"Coaching the Winner Within, 7 Leadership Skills to Elevate Your Team and Your Life." To help promote and sell the book, Paul created a website to enhance the reader's experience that introduced individuals to the book and accompanying workbook. Throughout the book, Paul discusses his exposure to championship cultures that focus on preparation, humility, and leadership and his evolution of a coach while helping rebuild a program - learning how to recruit, develop talent, and elevate team chemistry. On this episode Mike and Devrinn discuss the idea that success in coaching is not solely determined by tactical knowledge, but rather by personal growth and character development. Paul emphasizes the importance of letting players express themselves on the court while fostering an environment that prioritizes their academic commitments. Additionally, he shares insights from his newly published book, "Coaching the Winner Within," which outlines seven leadership skills essential for both personal and professional elevation. As we explore Paul's experiences and philosophies, we gain valuable perspectives on the intersection of athletics, personal finance, and the significance of nurturing a supportive team culture.Follow us on Twitter and Instagram @hoopheadspod for the latest updates on episodes, guests, and events from the Hoop Heads Pod.Make sure you're subscribed to the Hoop Heads Pod on your favorite podcast app and while you're there please leave us a 5 star rating and review. She was also National Coach of the Year in 2004, ACC Coach of the Year in 2004 and 2006 . She was inducted in the US Lacrosse Hall of fame and the IWLCA Hall of Fame. In 2022, She earned the Diane Geppi Aikens Lifetime Achievement Award. But athletics is only part of her story. Julie's success in sports and life is a result of grit, resilience and putting family first. Growing up, she loved competing with her siblings while appreciating how lucky she was to be able to play. As a coach, she emphasized the value of relationships and feeling connected. As a mother, she made hard decisions that kept her on the right path. In one of the biggest tragedies to affect the lacrosse communities, the death of Yeardley Love to abuse by an ex-boyfriend, Julie Myers realized that who she was and what she accomplished was just a drop in the bucket of life but also learned that every drop is incredibly important. With the beginning on The One Love Foundation, she was determined to make her ripple bigger by creating social change, raising awareness about relationship abuse and educating about relationship health. Now as CEO, she is responsible for ultimately teaching us all to “Love Better.” Julie Myers' message and legacy show us that, “It is amazing what people can do, especially when they have to.” @join1love
