Four Pillars Gin is now four times the size of the entire Australian premium gin category when it started in 2013. Much of the category’s explosive growth is down to three cofounders having a crack, while seeing off the cops, who thought they were making meth. Now under Lion’s ownership, itself part of Japanese drinks giant Kirin, two of the founders – ex-Olympian Cameron Mackenzie and PR man Stuart Gregor – have “gracefully” exited. But the third founding partner, former global strategy boss at IPG’s Jack Morton Worldwide, Matt Jones, is still in. He thinks Australia deserves a global spirits business spearheaded by botanical alchemy, experience, craft, influence and intimacy over mass “shotgun messaging”. Jones is also a reluctant martech convert, valuing old school customer experience and its intangibles over measuring clicks and other marketing metrics. He likewise places far greater value on flywheels than marketing funnels. While the direct-to-consumer growth hacking playbook that fuelled start-ups a decade ago is now a relic of its time, Jones thinks many of the Four Pillars lessons and tricks are repeatable today for those that distil the fundamentals. But there are some key differences. Here’s his take on what made the business succeed and where Four Pillars – and Lion’s expanding spirits business – goes next.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Along with partners Stuart Gregor and Cameron Mackenzie, he made the decision to create a luxury gin brand, and then executed it brilliantly.Lessons From Gin: Business the Four Pillars Way tells the story of how they did it, and offers a series of insights that anybody building a brand could borrow from. The book breaks the story into four stages - thinking, crafting, sharing and growing. In today's Unmade podcast, Jones shares with Unmade's Tim Burrowes some of the lessons applied, and learned, along the way.He makes the case that many business are underpowered in having marketing brains at the top. Like Jones, Gregor came from the communications world as owner of the PR agency Liquid Ideas. Mackenzie was the only working directly in the production of alcohol.Says Jones: “We were far heavier in terms of creative industries, creative mindset, brand mindset, marketing mindset than 99% of leadership groups out there in the world.“My perspective on the whole is that businesses are underweight when it comes to those voices around the leadership table. And I think that is something that we absolutely benefited from, that we valued these things that we might call brand leadership. We valued them at the heart of the business, not just the marketing strategy.”Lessons from Gin will be published by Wiley on October 30 and is available on presale. On October 31 Jones will deliver the keynote at Unmade's Unlock conference in Sydney where he will discuss the role of telling stories in building brands. Why would Four Pillars Gin turn down the opportunity to open another distillery? That's an important question, because the answer isn't necessarily obvious. After all, more must be better, right? That depends, and to avoid falling into a never-ending cycle of discussing what it depends on, Four Pillars co-founder Matt Jones and his team have developed a series of frameworks to aid their decision-making. Opening another distillery might service some of some of the company's goals, but is it the right decision for right now? What if instead, the better option is to open not a distillery, but to open a ‘home', where the goal is not to further the craft of making gin, but to celebrate the craft of making cocktails? Whichever option ends up being better, Matt and his team are far more likely to choose wisely when they can consult a series of carefully designed decision-making frameworks. When you have many reasonable choices in front of you, the discussion then needs to be guided by a higher goal, and that's exactly what these frameworks facilitate. Matt teaches you how to design your own decision-making frameworks, and shares the ones that have most helped Four Pillars. James France is a 30-year veteran of the spirits industry in both Australia and abroad. In 2008 he founded the Sydney-based distribution business Vanguard Luxury Brands with the objective of bringing the best brands to the best bars, liquor stores, restaurants and hotels across Australia. He ultimately sold Vanguard in 2019 to Lion, which simultaneously acquired the biggest brand on Vanguard's roster, Four Pillars Gin, as we previously explored with Four Pillars co-founder Cam Mackenzie on the show a few years ago now. After successfully managing that integration, James recently announced his departure from Vanguard. So I figured this was an appropriate juncture to invite him in for a chat about his experience distributing spirits over the last couple of decades, while the Australian industry was undergoing some massive changes. As you'll soon hear… while the Vanguard story had the happy outcome of a successful exit for James, as is invariably the case, there were plenty of challenges and costly failures along the way.Click here to open episode in your podcast player.

RFM certified all six of the cruise line's ships that sail to Alaska following an independent audit.RFM is a third-party certification program for wild-capture fisheries and is aligned with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries, the most comprehensive set of international standards and best practices for wild fisheries. The RFM ecolabel includes the seafood product's origin and tells consumers where their food comes from every step of the way — starting with the Alaska fishers and processors and continuing to the cruise line's receipt of product and to the guest's plate.Usage of the RFM logo signifies solid commitment to a distinctive Chain of Custody program that assures buyers and guests their seafood is legally harvested, obtained from responsibly managed certified sustainable fisheries, and can be traced back to its origin.Serving Alaska seafood on Holland America Line ships has long been part of the brand's immersive culinary experiences. On any Alaska cruise, the line serves more than 2,000 pounds of Alaska Salmon, 1,000 pounds of Alaska cod, 800 pounds of Alaska halibut, 500 pounds of Alaska rockfish and more.Holland America Line Reports Positive Results of Cruise Industry's First Long-Term Biofuel Test on Board Volendam at Port of RotterdamHolland America Line completed the cruise industry's first multiweek test of biofuels on board Volendam at Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. The 20-day test was conducted in partnership with GoodFuels, a leading producer and supplier of sustainable biofuels for the transportation industry, and Wärtsilä, a global leader in power and propulsion technologies and lifecycle solutions for the marine market. The assessment was completed September 7. In the first five days of the test the ship used a mix of 30% biofuel and 70% marine gas oil (MGO) in one of its main auxiliary engines. For the final 15 days of testing, the ship used 100% biofuel. According to GoodFuels, there was a 78% decrease in lifecycle CO2 emissions during the final 15 days of trial compared to marine gas oil emissions.Dutch-flagged Volendam was selected for the test since it was located at the Port of Rotterdam, one of the global ports where GoodFuels operates the infrastructure necessary to provide biofuel waterside fueling services. There is no significant difference for the ship's team members in handling regular fuel oil versus biofuel. The use of a “drop-in” biofuel such as the one tested on Volendam requires no shipboard refitting or special equipment. What Are Biofuels? The advanced biofuel is derived from feedstocks that are certified as 100% waste or residue, with no land-use issues and no competition with food production or deforestation.Holland America Line's 2024 Grand Australia and New Zealand Voyage Returns After a DecadeHolland America Line is continuing to bolster its longer voyages departing from a North America homeport, and the 2024 Grand Australia and New Zealand Voyage is the newest addition. When Matt Jones and his two other co-founders, Stuart and Cameron, started Four Pillars Gin 8 years ago, there was no gap in the gin market in Australia. There was no overwhelming desire from Aussies for a new gin brand, yet, they were not only able to break into the market and win multiple international gin awards, but they also quickly became one of Australia's favourite gin brands with a strong community backing the Four Pillars brand. What were the business and brand strategies Matt and the Four Pillars team used to create a brand that mattered to people, connected with them, and elevated their product above competitors? This episode of The Make It Happen Show covers all of that and more. Legacy Today the Still Magic podcast heads to the Australian state of Victoria to visit Four Pillars Gin, home of world class award-winning gins, internationally acclaimed collaborations and the International Wine and Spirits Competition's Best Global Gin business in 2019 and 2020. With a pedigree like that, it's great to see that Australia has a domestic and international craft spirits powerhouse without peer. And it is here that I speak with Four Pillars co-founder and distiller Cameron Mackenzie; father of 3 wonderful girls, loving husband, self-confessed kebab-loving larrikin and 1996 Atlanta Olympian. Cameron's story and that of Four Pillars, is another Hero's Journey Often referred to as ‘the one that makes the gin' Cameron's partnership with Stuart Gregor – ‘the one that makes the noise' – was forged in the wine industry by happenstance. Cameron loved the physical work that his wine-making career demanded. However, his leaders were concerned that without change, the physicality of the role would impact training for the Sydney 2000 Olympics. A few days a week in a marketing role with Stuart Gregor would be just the balance required. And the rest, as they say is history, and with it, an idea that would ultimately become history in the making. Cameron found himself on a successful career path in wine. But it took him away from the physical side of the industry, the part he loved. Then one day, it was time for a change; the pursuit for an Australian tonic was on. Or so they thought. After taking a good hard look at themselves, followed by a fateful 3am text message, tonic was off the table, but gin was most definitely on; one that reflected Australia, and its place in Asia. A research expedition to the US meant settling on a still from Carl GmbH, mentorship from Dr. Klaus Hagmann, a new found respect for lavender, and a clandestine ‘Breaking Bad' style venture, using a glass still named Walter A finer story would be hard to script. So grab yourself a gin and tonic, sit back and join Cameron Mackenzie and I on another craft spirits adventure. 00:33 Showreel – 03:25 Respect – 06:08 Making Gin, Noise and Sense – 10:58 Business success 101 – 11:49 Cash drivers – 12:38 Focus – 15:29 Fantastic distributor – 19:00 Craft with scale – 24:04 Breaking Bad and Sergeant Stu – 31:04 Rare Dry Gin – 34:09 Dr. Klaus Hagmann – 40:01 Bloody Shiraz – 49:09 Prolific high-quality NPD – 51:55 Olive Leaf Gin – 56:36 Expansion plans – 1:03:50 Community – 1:08:34 The '96 Olympian – 1:13:38 Life influences 1: Stuart Gregor – 1:15:23 Life influences 2: Cathy Freeman – 1:17:04 '96 Olympic pep talks – 1:21::01 Partnership with Lion – 1:29:18 Craft personified 1:32:38 10Sixty 1:35:32 5 tips for starters Be bold.
