Hour 1 Boomer & Gio are back today after a long vacation. We are starting year 8 of Boomer & Gio. Boomer is sick of people saying, ‘my bad' when mistakes are made. We talked about the terror attack in New Orleans. Gio is ‘fully activated' with the Vikings playing the Lions Sunday night for the NFC North title and the number one seed. Boomer talked about the Giants future with Sam Darnold at QB and Brian Flores as the head coach, if they fire Brian Daboll. C-Lo is in for Jerry today and is here for his first update and starts with the Knicks win over Utah. Saquon Barkley will not play this week against the Giants and Saquon reacted to that. In the final segment of the hour, we talked about Brian Daboll's future with the Giants. Boomer said if the Falcons had hired Bill Belichick, they would be going to the Super Bowl. Hour 2 We were talking about the NFL and somehow got on Puka Nacua being unstoppable. We also talked about Tee Higgins and contracts for wide receivers. Boomer said Tee Higgins should sign elsewhere for more money and Davante Adams should go to the Bengals. Many Jets players were checked out during the Bills game from Sunday. Gio said Aaron Rodgers is more of a symbol than a quarterback at this point and he has to go. The Jets are interviewing Ron Rivera today and Gio said they can't hire a head coach before hiring a GM. Mike Vrabel seems to want the Patriots job. Boomer sees Ben Johnson going to the Bears. Gio has had enough of the Ben Johnson tongue bathing. C-Lo returns for an update, but first Jerry Recco called in. C-Lo starts with a montage of Mike Breen calls from the Knicks win over Utah. We heard sound from some of the college football games from yesterday. The Eagles are resting players against the Giants. Boomer wonders if Saquon is a gold jacket guy because of this season. Aaron Rodgers talked about needing a mental break after the season. In the final segment of the hour, Gio said January 2nd is normally the worst day of the year. Boomer said a polar vortex is coming. We talked about the NFL MVP race and Sam Darnold. And the Vikings are still likely to let him go instead of paying him big money. Hour 3 Gio said he unplugs when he's on vacation and doesn't check out the station. He put it on for his ride and heard Juan Soto talk for an hour. E:60 aired an episode on Gunnar Esiason called, ‘Second Wind'. Gio watched it on Christmas eve when it aired live. We talked all about it. C-Lo returns for an update and gives us some examples of people who filled in for the sports minutes. One guy calls himself, ‘Sean Levine, the sports machine'. Chris McMonigle was furious with the Giants win over the Colts. Joe Benigno did not like Brian Costello's Jets article mentioning Matt Nagy as a potential head coach. C-Lo has a clip of Aaron Rodgers and Jeff Ulbrich and wonders which one is lying more. Joe Burrow talked about the Bengals letting great players leave the building. Boomer said the top coaching candidates will be Mike Vrabel and Ben Johnson. The Jets need a guy like Jon Gruden, Vrabel or Brian Flores according to Boomer. Ben Johnson's personality won't fit here and there's no way he would choose the Jets. In the final segment of the hour, congestion pricing goes into effect this coming Monday. Hour 4 Today we start the eighth year of Boomer & Gio. Ron Rivera is interviewing with the Jets today. They still don't have a GM and whoever it is, they have to bring in an alpha male head coach. The GM can't be the alpha male, the head coach has to be. Boomer doesn't think any of the QBs in the draft will be as good as Jayden Daniels or Bo Nix. We also talked about Sam Darnold and how the Vikings are likely going to let him go because of the salary cap. Difficult Conversations -Lessons I learned as an ICU Physician

Welcome to Difficult Conversations with Dr. Anthony Orsini. Today, our guest host is Liz Poret-Christ, who is the Director of Programming at The Orsini Way. Liz has a very personal relationship with our special guest, Gunnar Esiason. Gunnar  is the son of Boomer Esiason, and known for his  life-long battle with cystic fibrosis. Boomer and Gunnar were featured on the cover of the October 1993 Sports Illustrated to raise awareness about cystic fibrosis, and he has spent his entire life in the public eye, first as a child of a famous athlete, and now as an advocate and resource for those living with CF. Gunnar is a rare disease patient advocate who is passionate about early- stage drug development, patient empowerment, and health policy. He has developed a patient engagement platform for a medical nutrition company, built a venture philanthropy practice at the Boomer Esiason Foundation, and was the head coach of his high school's alma mater's varsity hockey team. He has consulted on clinical trial development, a real-world evidence population health study, and a cystic fibrosis-specific mental health and wellness screening tool. Currently he hosts the podcast, The State of Health with Gunnar Esiason.  Gunnar has been a household name in Liz's family since her daughter was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis in 2003. Liz and her family have benefited  from the generosity of the Boomer Esiason Foundation, learning about treatments, the importance of athletics, and insights into the latest medical research.  We start by Gunnar telling us about his personal journey  and how cystic fibrosis has affected his family.  We find out the story behind why Gunnar changed his mind about going to Law School after getting out of college, and he goes in depth about  his own patient experience and why he's so excited about  patient advocacy.  We hear a story about a conversation Gunnar had with his doctor when he was very sick and only 22 years and what happened when he got a spot in the TRIKAFTA clinical trial program.  We end with Gunnar sharing a conversation he found to be  most difficult.  He tells us  about the amazing things he is doing with the Boomer Esiason Foundation and talks  about their program supporting athletes with cystic fibrosis.   Host:Liz Poret-ChristGuest:Gunnar EsiasonFor More Information:Difficult Conversations I Learned as an ICU Physician Podcast EpisodesThe Orsini WayThe Orsini Way-FacebookThe Orsini Way-LinkedinThe Orsini Way-InstagramThe Orsini Way-TwitterIt's All In The Delivery: Improving Healthcare Starting With A Single Conversation by Dr. Anthony OrsiniResources Mentioned:Gunnar Esiason WebsiteGunnar Esiason TwitterGunnar Esiason InstagramBoomer Esiason FoundationBoomer Esiason Foundation TwitterThe State of Health Podcast with Gunnar Esiason

On today’s episode, Gunnar and I talk about why he feels a sense of promise around CF research, how he copes with his condition using humor and transparency, and his two jobs, both of which he loves: CF advocacy and coaching ice hockey. The conversation turns to PTSD, traumatic procedures and operations and various treatment options. The group then moves on to talk about where they would like to see mental health care in the future for people living with cystic fibrosis. Gunnar, Lea and Tiff give their picks for the tournament champion, which team may go on a "cinderella" run, and what they think are a few of the better first round matchups. Heads 'N Tales Podcast - Talking Sports Injury Rehab, Prevention, Perseverance, Concussions & Athlete Transition

Most athletes take the ability to breathe clearly for granted.  I have a cough and sinus congestion as I write up this blog post and I was just thinking that I should probably give up my Soul Cycle seat for tomorrow morning.  The discomfort from the cold largely stems from the fact that I cant take a full breath without "coughing up a lung."  Now imagine feeling like that every day of your life because that is what it is like to live with Cystic Fibrosis (CF).  Gunnar Esiason is the featured guest on the podcast for Episode 69 and he was diagnosed with CF at 2 years old. Gunnar is a recent graduate of Boston College, host of the "Making it Matter" podcast, and is an Advocate for the Boomer Esiason Foundation.  At this point you've probably made the connection that Gunnar's Dad is former NFL quarterback, Boomer Esiason.  In the beginning of our interview, Gunnar teaches us about Cystic Fibrosis, which is a terminal genetic illness that effects the respiratory system and digestive track.  Gunnar says CF is not a cookie cutter disease, which means severity and symptoms can vary significantly.  Like concussions, CF is an invisible illness because those affected by it more often than not look healthy. Gunnar and his parents at the dedication ceremony for the Cystic Fibrosis Center at Morristown Medical Center. Gunnar played two of the more violent sports growing up, which were ice hockey and football.  During our conversation he discusses the countless obstacles athletes with CF face, especially in such physically demanding sports.  For starters, breathing is difficult and is often compared to breathing through a straw.  Gunnar talks about the struggle to keep up with his teammates on longer, more endurance focused activities.  Another hurdle is bodyweight or lack there of.  Gunnar says that he has been considered underweight by American standards his whole life and discusses the frustrations of trying to put on weight and muscle mass.  Later on in the episode we talk about the recent addition of a feeding tube to his routine and how that has been a tremendous help in gaining and keeping on weight. Gunnar now tries to break down the stigma surrounding feeding tubes because it has been a game-changer for him. Despite these obstacles Gunnar never wanted to be treated any differently than his teammates nor did he want to use them as an excuse not to participate.  He is grateful for his coaches and teammates knack for knowing when to push him and when to pull him back in both practice and games.

Gunnar continues to play hockey and uses it as a "fun" version of cardio. Exercise and sports participation is extremely important for people with CF because they help to clear the lungs better than any alternative treatment.  Like many things associated with the illness, exercise and sports can also be a doubled-edged sword due to the increased risk of infection.  Anyone who has smelled a hockey bag knows what I'm talking about.  During the interview Gunnar takes us through some of the many setbacks he faced throughout his athletic career.  One of the more serious setbacks came when he contracted mono during the summer between his junior and senior year of high school.  He was sick for two months, lost his job as starting QB, and when he returned, it quickly became apparent that he wasn’t fit to play and still wasn’t well. Gunnar had to miss his entire senior football season to have a shot at playing  hockey in the winter. This was devastating to him at the time, but by exuding positive energy and keeping his sights set on hockey, he ultimately found joy in seeing his friends succeed on the field. Gunnar also talks about a couple other setbacks including coughing up blood during a football practice and two bouts with pneumonia in college, which have since hindered his athletic performance.  He stresses the importance of having a good balance with athletic activity and rest because you can easily run yourself into the ground.  I think this is a great message for all athletes, listen to your body and trust your gut!  Gunnar also talked about the ways he protects his health such as wearing a surgical mask to prevent infections and avoiding situations with poor air quality (ex. second hand smoke).  Hockey is still a huge part of Gunnar's life as both an athlete and coach.  Like most of my hockey guests, I asked about his opinion on fighting in hockey.  Gunnar believes fighting and the physicality of the sport should remain, stating that fear is a part of the game.  These are similar to my thoughts on the sport of football.  However, Gunnar emphasizes the importance of hitting properly.  He says that there is a lot of training for coaches especially in regard to concussions.  During this episode Gunnar talks about how he doesn't agree with USA Hockey's checking ban until kids reach the age of 13 (bantam level).  He feels it is important to teach proper ways to hit and take a hit at a young age and provides an example of an instance when he broke his wrist because he didn't know how to take a hit when he was young. Being an english major at Boston College, the creation of the Gunnar Esiason blog and Making it Matter podcast was a natural transition.  He decided to create this blog to use some of his experiences as an educational platform for people with cystic fibrosis, or their families, looking for some sort of guidance.  Due to concerns of spreading infections, individuals with CF can not interact with one another, so the creation of the blog and podcast with his co-host Julia Rae serves as a platform for them to interact. Their hope is to prove to listeners that kids with CF can grow up to live long, fulfilling and normal lives. The slogan of the podcast is to "Own It." To Gunnar, this means people with CF need to share their stories with the world, become their own advocate and for the CF community so people can identify with them, because there are only about 30,000 patients in the world.
