What is it about softball? “What is it not about softball?” replies Megan Faramio, a star pitcher for the Talons in the all-new Athletes Unlimited Softball League, or AUSL. “I can literally talk about softball for days.” The AUSL is about to wrap up its first season with a three-game playoff series in Alabama between Faraimo's Talons and the Bandits, a team name that Chicago softball fans know well. The Chicago Bandits were based mainly in Rosemont and played in the National Pro Fastpitch league from 2005 to 2019 until the league disbanded during the COVID-19 pandemic. The AUSL said it was “re-introducing” the Bandits brand “to make new history.” AUSL league commissioner Kim Ng acknowledged that pro women's softball leagues in the U.S. have a “spotty” history, but she says this league will be different. In this inaugural “barnstorming season,” AUSL teams like the Talons and Bandits are not yet attached to specific cities, so The Stadium in Rosemont has hosted every team in the small league for many of the regular season's games. Next year, the AUSL plans to attach six teams to six to-be-determined cities, and Ng says Rosemont is on the short-list. “Absolutely, you have to consider somewhere that has a Jennie Finch Way,” Ng said, a reference to the team's legendary former player and the street named after her where Rosemont's pro softball field is located. In our last episode, we looked back at Chicago's first professional women's softball league from the 1940s and ‘50s — one that featured business-sponsored teams like Parichy's Bloomer Girls or Brach's Kandy Kids. That softball league rivaled the pro women's baseball league featured in the 1992 movie “A League of Their Own.” Today, we're exploring this new chapter in professional women's softball history. What's going to give the AUSL staying power? And what's all the hype about? We asked Talons star Megan Faraimo, Commissioner Ng, and — at a sellout crowd on a hot day in Rosemont — the fans.
Being called by God to do something you feel ill-equipped to do can be somewhat of a frightening place to be. That is where Katie Lassiter, our storyteller from our Montgomery, Alabama community group, found herself when her husband approached her about becoming a foster family. Katie was adamant she could not do it as she didn't think she was mentally strong enough. But, as you will see in her story, when God calls you to something, He will equip you with the strength and the resources you need. What are you being called to today? Katie's story is going to encourage you to take a step towards that calling even if you feel unprepared because the Lord will indeed empower you. IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: - God's plan is always better than your plan. - If you feel God is calling you to something, just take one step and let Him lead. - God's grace is sufficient for you in your weakness. In this episode, we sit down with author and historian Forest Issac Jones to discuss his new book Good Trouble: The Selma, Alabama and Derry, Northern Ireland Connection 1963–1972. This powerful work uncovers the striking parallels between two seemingly distant civil rights struggles—across the American South and the streets of Northern Ireland. Forest walks us through the political, cultural, and spiritual ties that united these movements, from shared strategies of nonviolence to government crackdowns and the enduring power of grassroots resistance.

228: In this episode of the REtipster Podcast, I talk with David Hansen, Arturo Paturzo, and Emanuel Wijkhuisen, three real estate investors who teamed up to take on a high-stakes land entitlement project in Alabama.(Show Notes: REtipster.com/228)This deal was originally meant to be a simple land flip, but they quickly pivoted into a full-scale platted subdivision. They faced many challenges: a shady real estate agent, a ghosting engineer, hidden wetlands, last-minute developer surprises, sewer quotes jumping by $150K, and even a paved road that mysteriously appeared just before closing. We dive deep into their process, what they learned, and how they turned a risky $250K investment into nearly $600K in profit without building anything. If you're curious about how land entitlement deals work, how to work with builders and developers, or want to hear a wild real estate story packed with lessons, this one's for you!

A sitting Democratic president who chooses not to run for re-election, a vice president running out of the president's shadow, and a Republican nominee trying to make a political comeback amidst accusations of collusion – welcome to the 2024 1968 presidential election. What we think we know about the election has been challenged, however, by a new book by Luke A. Nichter, a professor of history and presidential studies at Chapman University. In The Year That Broke Politics: Collusion and Chaos in the Presidential Election of 1968 (Yale UP, 2024) Nichter reexamines the campaign and shows how the ‘68 election foreshadowed our current political landscape. The 1968 presidential race was a contentious battle between vice president Hubert Humphrey, Republican Richard Nixon, and former Alabama governor George Wallace. The United States was reeling from the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr., and Robert F. Kennedy and was bitterly divided on the Vietnam War and domestic issues, including civil rights and rising crime. Drawing on previously unexamined archives and numerous interviews, Luke A. Nichter upends the conventional understanding of the campaign. Nichter chronicles how the evangelist Billy Graham met with Johnson after the president's attempt to reenter the race was stymied by his own party, and offered him a deal: Nixon, if elected, would continue Johnson's Vietnam War policy and also not oppose his Great Society, if Johnson would soften his support for Humphrey. Johnson agreed. Nichter also shows that Johnson was far more active in the campaign than has previously been described; that Humphrey's resurgence in October had nothing to do with his changing his position on the war; that Nixon's “Southern Strategy” has been misunderstood, since he hardly even campaigned there; and that Wallace's appeal went far beyond the South and anticipated today's Republican populism. This eye-opening account of the political calculations and maneuvering that decided this fiercely fought election reshapes our understanding of a key moment in twentieth-century American history. Dr. Andrew O. Pace is a historian of the US in the world who specializes in the moral fog of war. He is currently a DPAA Research Partner Fellow at the University of Southern Mississippi and a co-host of the Diplomatic History Channel on the New Books Network. He is also working on a book about the reversal in US grand strategy from victory at all costs in World War II to peace at any price in the Vietnam War. The South and the SEC took over college football starting in 1998 -- and the North and the Big Ten helped let it happen. This five-part podcast series will examine the how and why of that -- from coaches to players to attitudes to geography to cheating to luck. Between 1998 and 2022, the North won just two national titles as Alabama's Nick Saban and a host of other Southern champs put the North in a corner. Episode 1 starts with a moment of Northern superiority -- the 2006 showdown between No. 1 Ohio State and No. 2 Michigan. Then it explains how it all unraveled, including some close calls for the North that might have rendered this podcast moot if they'd gone another way. And yeah, once the South started winning, the South started bragging. The North didn't have much of an answer, on the field or in a war of words. The next four episodes will dive even deeper on coaches, players, attitudes and the shift in the sport that is ending this era of Northern shortcoming. Hosts Doug Lesmerises and Bill Landis from the daily college college football Kings of the North appreciate you being here, and they hope you enjoy The 25 Year Winter. Producer: Michael Henahan.

In April 2024, medical staff testified before Louisiana's House Health and Welfare Committee about just how bad things had gotten at the Glenwood Regional Medical Center. The West Monroe hospital had been under fire from the state Health Department over lapses in patient care that seemed to be escalating. The hospital had stopped paying bills for oxygen supplies, the blood bank, and repairs to the elevators that take patients up to surgery. Former Glenwood nurse Debra Russell testified that there wasn't a cardiologist available when a man suffered a heart attack or a $5 piece of equipment she needed for a routine procedure. “You would send a nurse to go get it,” Russell said. “And she would come back and say, ‘Oh, Miss Debra, I don't have any.' I said, ‘Go to another unit.'...‘We don't have one.'” Glenwood was run by Steward Health Care, at the time one of the country's largest for-profit health care operators. But its building was owned by Medical Properties Trust—a real estate company based in Birmingham, Alabama, that charged Glenwood monthly rent.State Rep. Michael Echols, a Republican whose district includes Glenwood, had been flooded with concerns from community members. Echols had begun to wonder whether the high rent to MPT was fueling Glenwood's financial crisis. He struggled to get real answers. Glenwood is just one of nearly 400 health care facilities owned by MPT and rented out to hospital chains. Nine companies that leased hospitals from MPT have gone bankrupt—including Steward, Glenwood's former operator. And while dozens of hospitals have been sold, entangled in bankruptcy proceedings, or become depleted shells, MPT's top brass has earned millions. This week on Reveal, Mother Jones reporter Hannah Levintova and Reveal producer Ashley Cleek dig into MPT—its history, its business model, and how treating hospitals like financial assets leaves them gutted. “Gaslighting” is the psychological manipulation of individuals or groups into questioning their reality, memory, or sanity—often to maintain control. In a week of continuing mounting chaos in US politics marked by the meeting of the National Organization of Black County Officials in Birmingham, we can recognize that both colonialism and American institutions have gaslit Black communities into believing that our cultures, languages, and histories are inferior.New Ancestor Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o's work explains how elites from would-be oppressed groups are often recruited into tempering mass liberation movements through mental colonization in language, law, politics and economics, enabling forms of structural oppression masked as deep democracy. The critique extends to today's struggles, from myths of meritocracy to distortions of Black identity and potential power in education and demography. While selective buying campaigns remain powerful in moments, the example of Alabama's A.G. Gaston underscores that building movements anchored by independent Black institutions—banks, schools, businesses—is essential for generating sustainable power. These examples also challenge strands of Black radicalism that suffer from ideological gaslighting, leading them to reject economic self-determination and political pragmatism in favor of ideological purity—undermining efforts to deliver material gains for the poor.Real liberation requires long-view strategies, rooted in cultural self-determination, global awareness, and networked community infrastructure—not just litigation or protest, but power gleaned from purposeful creation. This is an antidote to being manipulated and trying to govern by gaslight.JOIN KNARRATIVE: https://www.knarrative.com it's the only way to get into #Knubia, where these classes areheld live with a live chat.To shop Go to:TheGlobalMajorityMore from us:Knarrative Twitter: https://twitter.com/knarrative_Knarrative Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/knarrative/In Class with Carr Twitter: https://twitter.com/inclasswithcarrSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
