This week, we dive into decentralization with Kenny Ezeji-Okoye and Stella Dyer from Millicent, Ilya Orlov from FileMarket, and Rita Martins, author and Techstars mentor. The discussion covers the journey from centralized to decentralized models, the impact of decentralization on users and developers, and insights into decentralization in financial services. The episode also includes a sneak peek into Rita Martins' new book, Web3 in Financial Services. Decentralization generally refers to the transfer of control of an enterprise from a small group of stakeholders to a distributed network. At the earliest stages of a startup's life, the co-founders usually put a plan in motion to keep the control of the business within the hands of the co-founders as a centralized business. With many web3 projects, however, the project leads or co-founders decide to create a distributed network, where the enterprise value accrues to a token rather than to the equity of a centralized operating company. Decentralization is not a point-in-time decision, however. For example, it took 5 years for the Maker Protocol to fully decentralize. Most web3 projects that become decentralized originally start as a centralized operating company and then decentralize over time, like Maker Protocol became Maker DAO. Does this matter to users whether or not a project is decentralized or plans to decentralize? Do they actually care? What about developers, i.e., those building apps/dapps on top of web3 protocols? What's in it for them? Kene and Stella from Millicent, Ilya from FileMarket, and author Rita Martins tell us what they think about decentralization and when it matters and when it doesn't. But just because the views are fab — what about the food — right? The Point features a 12-foot wood-infused grill and a dedicated raw bar/sushi bar, so yes, locally sourced oysters are shucked to order. The man, the myth, the legend — Greg Casten — the owner of the Point pops in for a little how do you do. You pay attention to my insta feed, you know I have been out and about: -Caruso's at Pike & Rose - Matt Adler does it again -Dear Sushi in the Love Makoto - Oh Ma Kase -Chefs For Equlaity - Another blowout event -Daru -Maketto As a regular listener of this show, you know I love to travel. Love it. But making all the decisions is a little overwhelming! When I was a less seasoned traveler, I had done all this research and made all these reservations — it was so stressful — and when I arrived at our hotel, the concierge, Franco, greeted us, sat us down, and asked what our plans were. I took out my book, and he looked at me and said — may I help you here? I was like, PLEASE. He tore through our itinerary, took places out, added places in, and streamlined our trip. It was fantastic! He then let us in on a little secret: whenever you travel and wherever you travel, stay at a hotel that values the concierge's expertise. And since that moment, when selecting a hotel to stay in, I do just that, which got me thinking. I've been in the hospitality business for over 30 years, and I have worked with some of the best in our region. The concierge can really provide you with a stellar trip if you know how to WORK with them wisely. So today's class is a concierge 101 In with me today are two very visible concierges in the DC Area: Leslie Valtin, Lead Concierge from the St. Regis & Jeffrey Morgan, Chef Concierge Conrad — we all go way back. Both Jeff and Leslie took different paths to become the experts that they are today, but here is what they both have in common — They are generous souls, thoughtful problem solvers, and convey hospitality in all that they do. They are both past presidents of the WACA and members of Les Clefs d'Or — let's get an education. Quotes "We crafted this restaurant with a powerful message in mind: strength. Episode Notes Hello and welcome to this very focused and concise Question Bucket episode. We only got two emails, so we definitely didn't somehow record for four hours straight in a delirious frenzy of topics. Anyway, we start with an attempt to encapsulate our read on Major Kusanagi and how it relates to our political worldview, bringing in and diverging toward other topics like Iceland's Nobel Laureate Halldór Laxness, the way public policies funnel those suffering from poverty into the military, the anarchist utopianism of Zhuangzi, reparative justice, Major Kusanagi's ideological attachment to Section 9 and the power it provides her, and finally an answer to a question about micro machines. We then answer a question about foundational media for us (Chrono Cross and Icelandic music for Niamh, Prince and James Joyce's Ulysses for Connor) before diving headfirst into the “non-anime” topics we brought. Niamh is talking about Persona 3 Portable and how its portrayal of self-harm, savior complexes, and kink are deeply hurtful and honestly just fucked. As Niamh says in the cold opening disclaimer for this episode, this part of our discussion in particular gets pretty heavy, so please be careful around the Content Warnings for this episode if you may be triggered or affected by discussions of things like self-harm, abusive relationships, biting and blood kinks, etc. Connor tries as best he can to follow that up with a look back at The Knife's Shaking the Habitual and its position as an abrasive album that engages with the music that came before it and also might point towards some of the queer music that came after. We finish out answering a question about how to survive grad school, and how maybe our perspective on grad school is uniquely bleak because of the particular cruelty of the program we both attended. Sorry for being a downer. Works Cited in this Discussion “If you want to understand me better as a person, play Chrono Cross” by our very own Niamh “A Better Lover” also by our very own Niamh, published by ZEAL Content Warnings for this Discussion Brief Mentions of Online Harassment Discussion of Abusers in Queer Communities and Breaking Cycles of Abuse In-Depth Discussion of Self-Harm, Trauma, Abuse, and Savior Complexes (2:12:44 to 2:23:20) In-Depth Discussion of Kink, Teeth, Biting, Bloodplay, Painplay, the Erotics of Negotiation, and Consent (2:23:20 to 2:42:46) Discussion of the Pressures of Grad School Find out more at https://ghost-divers.pinecast.co

An In-Depth Discussion about the athletic recruiting process with Patty Costlow, Recruiting Coordinator at Munciana Volleyball Club. Patty has over 25 years of experience in club sports space, and she has some choice words for clubs: “I would challenge club directors. You have to take a look at what you can offer your club participants much more seriously. It is our duty as owners of clubs, as staff of clubs, as coaches of clubs to be a part of the process. It takes being all in.” In Episode I, we sit down with Patty to discuss what it takes for student-athletes, families, and clubs for successful collegiate recruiting. The process is the same.” “There are a lot of talented athletes, and that's the thing. A college coach has a big base to shoot from, but I hear from college coaches and they tell me, ‘You've got 3 athletes that are all the same athletic ability, but were going to give the offer to the one that we know is the most interested.'” “You're an athlete, that's really not who you are. Without communication, that college coach doesn't know who you really are.” “Be honest about the level you can play at, understanding what your strengths and weaknesses are, and then building a target list of schools and trying to communicate with those coaches.” “I want kids to understand that there's always someone around that can help them determine those things. If you're at a club and you don't really have a recruiting coordinator, your club coach can help you. Your club director, your high school coach […] There's always some type of resource.” “I would challenge club directors. You have to take a look at what you can offer your club participants much more seriously. The way that recruiting is now, college coaches recruit from clubs. It is, I think, our duty as owners of clubs, as staff of clubs, as coaches of clubs to be a part of the process. It takes being all in.” “When our ownership and our club directors went all in, they knew we're not going back from here. This is where we change things. You have to have someone who is passionate about it, who's dedicated to it.”
