Yahya Jammeh, Gambia's former leader, ruled the tiny West African country with an iron fist for 22 years after seizing power in a 1994 military coup. His regime was marked by widespread human rights abuses, including enforced disappearances, torture and extrajudicial killings. Despite being voted out in 2016 and soon exiled to Equatorial Guinea after refusing to accept the election results, his legacy continues to haunt Gambia as victims and their families wait for elusive justice and reparations. This audio documentary, "Portrait of Jammeh," sheds light on the long-lasting scars left by his dictatorship. The documentary takes listeners to Kanilai, Jammeh's hometown, where, despite his brutal legacy, many people still revere him. Survivors and families of victims recount chilling experiences, including mass executions carried out by Jammeh's notorious death squad, the Junglers.

From the Commonwealth country of Canada, to the fifth republic of France, we reflect on how the world remembers Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. As Head of the Commonwealth, the Queen had to negotiate the ever-evolving relationship with its member states as they declared independence and as Britain's relationship to its former colonies underwent profound change. The British Monarch remains head of state of 14 countries, from Canada to the Solomon Islands. Lyse Doucet is in Ottawa where Canada's leaders have made warm tributes and reflects back on her own encounters with the Queen. Despite its anti-monarchist history, one of the more powerful tributes to the Queen emerged from French President Emmanuel Macron. He spoke fondly of her as a ‘great head of state' and a ‘kind-hearted queen.' So what was the Queen's relationship to France? In 1972 Queen Elizabeth famously told former President Georges Pompidou 'we are not driving on the same side of the road, but we are going in the same direction', when he lifted the veto to Britain entering the Common Market. Hugh Schofield reflects on a unique relationship. The Oscar-winning film Parasite portrays the story of a low-income South Korean family living in a basement apartment. In one memorable scene, the heavens open and floodwater fills the family home. Last month, in a cruel example of life imitating art, Seoul experienced its heaviest flooding in 100 years. Water rushed into homes, trapping residents inside – four people were killed. The city government has since promised to get rid of the basement apartments and create more social housing. But as Jean Mackenzie has been finding out, this offers little comfort to those who live there. The Gambia is Africa's smallest nation, where the process of reconciliation is proving arduous, five years after the end of a murderous dictatorship. Former President Yahya Jammeh, who fled to Equatorial Guinea in 2017 after losing a re-election bid, is wanted internationally for crimes against humanity, including extrajudicial killings, torture, forced disappearances, and sexual violence. Because he still enjoys a measure of loyalty back home, the nation he left behind is divided. Most of Jammeh's hit men fled when he did, and many Gambians say reconciliation is impossible until they are all brought to justice. When Alexa Dvorson visited the country she witnessed a rare act of contrition. The Republic of Moldova sits on a fault line of geo-politics, with warring Ukraine on one side and Romania, firmly ensconced in the EU and Nato, on the other. Within its borders, is Transnistria, where a Russian-backed separatist war broke out thirty years ago. Today the area is a frozen conflict zone, but Russia still has a military presence. Piggy-in-the-middle between East and West, perhaps nothing tells Moldova's complicated story more clearly than its main industry – wine - as Tessa Dunlop finds.

The Governor of the Central Bank of The Gambia, Bakay Jammeh said the domestic debt as at the end of October 2019, has increased to D33.0 billion compared to 31.1 billion in 2018. He said this yesterday during the Monetary Policy Committee meeting held at the Central Bank of The Gambia. He said this increment constitutes 37.6 and 40.3 percent of the Gross Domestic Product respectively, with an increase in the stock of Treasury and Suku al-Salaam bills by 14.8 percent to 19.7 billion during the period under review. He said food inflation increased marginally by 0.1 percent to 7.3 percent in October 2019 compared to 7.2 percent in September 2019, whereas non-food inflation decelerated to 8.0 percent in October 2019 compared to 8.3 percent in September 2019, but higher than 6.8 percent recorded last year. He said: "the Gambian economy is estimated to have grown by robust 6.5 percent in 2018 compared to 4.8 percent in 29017, supported largely by the service sector, including tourism and trade, financial services and insurance, as well as transport and telecommunication". He added: "The goods account deficit is estimated at US$ 286.7 million (16.2 percent of GDP) in the first nine months of 2019, higher than the deficit of US$252.6 million(15.6 percent GDP) in the corresponding year in 2018". He said the committee noted among others the potential impact on the economy of the stock to agriculture, improvement in the current account of the balance of payments, deceleration in inflation, strong in the banking sector and comfortable level of the international reserves of the bank. He said in view of this, the committee decided to maintain the policy rate at 12.5 percent, maintain the interest on standing deposit facility at 2.5 percent and the standing lending at 13.5 percent. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/newscast-africa/support Learn more about your ad choices. Jean Guo, CEO, and Binta Jammeh, COO, of Konexio are working to provide digital skills training to improve the educational and career potential to some of the 200,000 refugees living in Paris. Just as important, they are strategically helping them to connect to the broader Paris community to help them fully integrate into their new community. Launched less than two years ago, Konexio is already showing results, with most of the participants reporting that they use the skills they learned. Almost three quarters report getting jobs! Interview with Jean Guo, the CEO, co-founder of Konexio. The following is the pre-interview with Jean Guo. Be sure to watch the recorded interview above. What is the problem you solve and how do you solve it? The problem that Konexio seeks to solve is the pressing issue of integration and employment for vulnerable populations, notably refugees and migrants. This problem revolves around three key facts: There are currently 65 million displaced persons globally. In France, where Konexio operates, there are over 200,000 refugees and asylum seekers, and the unemployment rate within this group is over 50%. On average it takes 20 years for refugees to reach the same employment level as nationals. Takura Zhangazha, Anne Marie C. Befoune, Aisha Dabo Political bloggers and online activists have gained increasing levels of attention by governments since their key role as information transmitters during the so called “Arab Spring”. In many parts of Africa, authorities can feel threatened by bloggers who are able to bypass the gatekeepers with their online avenues to free expression. Independent voices are regarded as threats and are monitored by state security networks. In this context, blogger networks can help to provide exchange, updates and common purpose. The international blogger network #AfricaBlogging is an online platform featuring a plurality of voices and views supporting democratic culture and debate in Sub-Saharan Africa. Founded in 2015 in Johannesburg, its members believe that blogs play a major role in providing information and diversity of opinion in Africa. They are committed to encouraging open debate on matters that are at times not adequately covered by traditional media such as politics, economics, gender equality, health and social matters. However, there is a growing trend for bloggers to be monetized ‘multiplicators' and to become brands. Those who shun the native advertising and commercialization trends and feel their function in the information ecosystem is to offer critical analysis that fills the space between events and conventional media reporting, have to fight to remain independent and credible. From cyber-activism campaigns that helped bring an end to the Jammeh regime in the Gambia to the political reality-check that bloggers have been able to offer more recently about Zimbabwe's political development, members of the network are at the forefront of social and political change across Africa. Join us in this session with three members of #AfricaBlogging to discuss the positioning of bloggers between activists and political analysts, how to remain independent and credible, and what it means to be a successful blogger in the post-truth world of social media and fake News.

This week’s guest is Jeffrey Smith, executive director of Vanguard Africa, a startup nonprofit that provides campaign advice and public relations support to pro-democracy leaders in Africa. Smith aims to bring the international spotlight to Gambia, which is recovering from a more than two-decades-long dictatorship. Political and civil rights were nonexistent during the presidency of Yahya Jammeh, a former military officer who ruled the country from 1994 to 2016 . Vanguard Africa partnered with Gambia’s presidential candidates in 2016 to campaign against Jammeh, who lost the election. Despite this accomplishment, Smith says Vanguard Africa’s work in Gambia is unfinished; a country cannot transition from dictatorship to democracy overnight. The nonprofit is now focused on holding the new government accountable. To aide with the transition, CIPE has partnered with the Gambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry to establish a national business council for the private sector.

After more than 20 years under the authoritarian rule of former President Yahya Jammeh, Gambians have great expectations of the new administration. They want a well-performing economy, jobs, good health care and education, and an accountable government that will uphold the constitution. Many people are also hoping the new government can help stem the large number of young Gambians who every year perilously try to cross the Mediterranean sea in the hope of making a better life in Europe. During his election campaign, the new President, Adama Barrow, promised to free political prisoners, remove repressive laws, return the country back to the International Criminal Court and restore relations with international community. Under former leader Yahya Jammeh, Gambia a country of fewer than two million people become largely isolated and its economy stagnated as donors withheld aid and grants to protest against human rights violations. The human rights watchdog, Amnesty International says dozens of people including human rights activists and journalists were imprisoned or died in mysterious circumstance for criticising Mr Jammeh. Others were forced to flee the country for their safety. Now many families are seeking justice and closure. With many democratic institutions broken down or non-existent, the new government has a big job on its hands. How best can Gambia rebuild itself? What should the new government prioritise? «International Criminal Court, is in fact an International Caucasian Court for the persecution and humiliation of people of colour», slo han fast. ICCs rolle sto i sentrum for begivenhetene da president Yahya Jammeh i desember først aksepterte valgtapet i Gambia, for så å snu etter at valgvinneren erklærte at Gambia ville beholde sitt ICC-medlemskap. Jammeh reiste senere til ikke-ICC-medlemmet Ekvatorial-Guinea. Hvordan preger ICC politikken i afrikanske land? It's official - in what almost surely qualifies as a miracle, Yahya Jammeh, the dictator who has ruled The Gambia for 22 years, was voted out of power in a free and fair election, and Adama Barrow, the opposition coalition candidate, was voted in.
