MLB – Major League Baseball Playoffs – Wild Card Round – Best of three Today Wild Card Playoffs – Best of Three Tampa Bay (McClanahan 12-8) at Cleveland (Bieber 13-8), 12:07 p.m. Philadelphia (Wheeler 12-7) at St. Louis (Quintana 6-7), 2:07 p.m. Seattle (Castillo 8-6) at Toronto (Manoah 16-7), 4:07 p.m. San Diego (Darvish 16-8) at New York (Scherzer 11-5), 8:07 p.m. MLB – Detroit Tigers wrap disappointing season with new executive The Detroit Tigers head into the offseason after finishing 66-96 this year, the third-worst record in the American League. The franchise spent a lot of money entering the season to bolster the rotation and lineup and didn’t get much for it. Shortstop Javier Báez, signed to a $140 million contract, hit .238 with 17 homers, 67 RBIs and 147 strikeouts. Left-hander Eduardo Rodríguez also struggled. The Tigers did play .500 baseball over the final two months and that included wininng nine of 10 games at one point. NFL – National Football League – Week 5 Last Night Indianapolis Colts 12, Denver Broncos 9 – OT Colts 12, Broncos 9 – OT – Colts grind out 12-9 win over Broncos in injury-filled game Stephon Gilmore batted away Russell Wilson’s pass to Courtland Sutton in the end zone on fourth-and-1 from the 5 to give the Indianapolis Colts a 12-9 overtime victory over the Denver Broncos on Thursday night. Gilmore also intercepted Wilson’s pass in the fourth quarter to help set up Chase McLauglin’s tying field goal. McLauglin connected from 47 yards 4:10 into overtime to give the Colts (2-2-1) the lead in the first game in NFL history that pitted quarterbacks with at least four Pro Bowl appearances each, but it featured zero touchdowns. The Broncos (2-3) decided against a tying chip-shot field goal by Brandon McManus, and Wilson lined up in the shotgun next to running back Melvin Gordon, then threw incomplete over the middle. Sunday Detroit Lions at New England Patriots, 1:00 p.m. Chicago Bears at Minnesota Vikings, 1:00 p.m. NFL – Lions, Patriots looking to bounce back from 1-3 starts Scoring points hasn’t been an issue for the Detroit Lions this season, but it hasn’t translated into many victories. The New England Patriots are reeling for a different reason and could use a victory just as bad as the teams prepare to match up this week. Through four weeks, the Lions are averaging an NFL-high 35 points and a league-high 437 yards per game. But even 45 points was wasn’t enough to beat Seattle at Ford Field last week to drop Detroit to 1-3. New England is also 1-3 and is looking at the prospect of having its third starting quarterback in three weeks with Mac Jones nursing a tender ankle and Brian Hoyer going on injured reserve with a concussion . If they’re out, rookie Bailey Zappe will make his first career start. NFL – Justin Fields, mired Bears offense looking for positives Although Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields and receiver Darnell Mooney connected on a big pass play last week for the first time, they’re not expecting an immediate breakthrough in the team’s offense. Heading into a game against the Minnesota Vikings, the Bears remain focused on the process of building their overall attack and not simply evaluating Fields, offensive coordinator Luke Getsy says. Still, with an offense last in passing and next-to-last in yardage, and only two touchdowns in their last 32 possessions, the Bears (2-2) have work to do to be competitive on a weekly basis. NHL – National Hockey League – Preseason Last Night Minnesota Wild 4, Chicago Blackhawks 1 Tonight Toronto Maple Leafs at Detroit Red Wings, 7:30 p.m. NCAAFB – College Football – Week 6 Tonight – Big Ten Nebraska at Rutgers, 7:00 p.m. Saturday (4) Michigan at Indiana, 12:00 p.m. Eastern Michigan at Western Michigan, 12:00 p.m. Ball State at Central Michigan, 3:30 p.m. (3) Ohio Sta te at Michigan State, 4:00 p.m. (16) BYU vs. Notre Dame, 7:30 p.m. at Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas NCAAFB – Wolverines look to start another win streak over Indiana Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh knows the score. A 24-game winning streak over Indiana ended when the Wolverines last traveled to Bloomington. Coach Tom Allen’s teams had given Harbaugh all sorts of headaches even before the game two years ago. Now, though, with No. 4 Michigan pursuing a second straight Big Ten title and what it hopes will be a second consecutive playoff berth, the Wolverines want to turn up the pressure when they visit the Hoosiers on Saturday. NCAAFB – No. 3 Ohio State heavy favorite at Michigan State No. 3 Ohio State faces its first road test of the season Saturday at struggling Michigan State. The heavily favored Buckeyes are on a roll, averaging 55.7 points per game in their last four contests. They have won six straight games against Michigan State and 15 of the last 18 matchups between the two schools. The Spartans have lost three consecutive games, including 27-13 last week at Maryland. It’s Mel Tucker’s longest losing streak during his three-year tenure as Michigan State’s head coach. NBA – National Basketball Association – Preseason Tonight Indiana Pacers at New York Knicks, 7:30 p.m. Detroit Pistons at New Orleans Pelicans, 8:00 p.m. Denver Nuggets at Chicago Bulls, 8:00 p.m. NBA – Warriors’ Draymond Green apologizes for fight with teammate Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers says star forward Draymond Green apologized to the team a day after fighting with teammate Jordan Poole during practice. Poole practiced Thursday while Green didn’t. Myers said any potential discipline would be handled internally. Myers said he doesn’t anticipate Green missing any games for Wednesday’s altercation. The Athletic first reported the scuffle, saying Green struck Poole. Myers said “space is good” regarding Green not practicing and going home after he addressed the team. Green was previously suspended for one game in 2018 after a confrontation with teammate Kevin Durant. WNBA – Brittney Griner at ‘weakest moment’ in Russia, her wife says WNBA star Brittney Griner is at her “absolute weakest moment in life right now” as she faces a hearing in Russia later this month for her appeal of a nine-year prison sentence for drug possession. That’s according to her wife, Cherelle Griner, who told “CBS Mornings” in an interview aired Thursday that Brittney Griner is afraid of being forgotten by the U.S. Brittney Griner was convicted Aug. 4 after Russian police found vape canisters with cannabis oil in her luggage at a Moscow airport. Her defense lawyers said Griner had been prescribed cannabis for pain. Cherelle Griner said she fears her wife could be moved to a Russia labor camp. Golf – LIV – World ranking rejects last-minute LIV Golf bid for points The Official World Golf Ranking won’t be awarding points to LIV Golf events this year. The ranking board has denied a request to immediately add Saudi-funded LIV Golf to the MENA Tour schedule. The OWGR says the MENA Tour did not give it sufficient notice and there would not be time to finish the review ahead of the LIV Golf Invitational in Bangkok that starts Friday or the event in Saudi Arabia next week. There are only two LIV Golf events left so some players will be out of the top 50 and find a tough road back to the majors. MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Minnesota Twins 5, Detroit Tigers 3 – 10 Innings Kansas City Royals 2, Chicago White Sox 1 Cubs were off Twins 5, Tigers 3 – F/10 – Urshela’s 2-run homer in 10th gives Twins 5-3 win vs Tigers Gio Urshela hit a game-ending, two-run homer in the 10th inning and Jose Miranda had three RBIs as the Minnesota Twins came back to beat the Detroit Tigers 5-3. Jose Miranda had three RBIs for the Twins, who maintained their one-game lead in the AL Central over Cleveland. Miranda hit a tying, two-run single in the eighth. He added an RBI single in the 10th before Urshela’s big hit. Tigers starter Tarik Skubal was pulled following five scoreless innings with left arm fatigue. Royals 2, White Sox 1 – Perez, Merrifield homer, Royals edge White Sox 2-1 Salvador Perez and Whit Merrifield hit solo home runs, Daniel Lynch took a shutout into the sixth inning in his return from the injured list and the Kansas City Royals edged the Chicago White Sox 2-1 for their second straight win. Perez launched a monster blast for the second straight game and his third homer in four contests after missing 31 games with a left thumb injury and surgery. Merrifield’s drive into the left-field bullpen off Michael Kopech in the sixth might have been his last with Kansas City. A two-time All Star in seven seasons with the Royals, the second baseman has been the subject of trade rumors heading into Tuesday’s deadline. Tim Anderson and Andrew Vaughn each had two hits off Lynch, but the White Sox slipped back to .500 (51-51). Tonight Detroit (Manning 0-0) at Minnesota (Archer 2-5), 7:40 p.m. WSJM/WCSY 7:20 Chicago Cubs (Thompson 8-4) at St. Louis (Wainwright 7-8), 7:45 p.m. Kansas City (Keller 5-11) at Chicago White Sox (Giolito 6-6), 8:10 p.m. MLB – Braves get OF Robbie Grossman from Tigers for minor leaguer The defending World Series champion Atlanta Braves have acquired veteran corner outfielder Robbie Grossman in a trade with the Detroit Tigers for minor league pitcher Kris Anglin. The 32-year-old Grossman is making $5 million this year and can become a free agent after the season. He has struggled for the out-of-contention Tigers with a .205 batting average, 13 doubles, two home runs and 23 RBIs in 83 games. The switch-hitter has started 43 games in left field and 31 games in right. Grossman set career highs in 2021 in his Tigers debut with 23 home runs and 156 games. MLB – White Sox acquire lefty reliever Diekman from Red Sox The Chicago White Sox have acquired left-handed reliever Jake Diekman from the Boston Red Sox for catcher Reese McGuire and a player to be named or cash. Later Monday, the Red Sox acquired left fielder Tommy Pham in a trade with Cincinnati in exchange for a player to be named later or cash. The 35-year-old Diekman is 5-1 with a 4.23 ERA in 44 appearances this season. The 6-foot-4 Diekman is particularly tough on left-handed batters, holding them to a .188 average this season. WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Tonight Dallas Wings at Chicago Sky, 9:00 p.m. WNBA – Brittney Griner’s trial resumes amid intensified diplomacy Since Brittney Griner last appeared in her trial for cannabis possession, the question of her fate has expanded from a cramped courtroom on Moscow’s outskirts to the highest level of Russia-U.S. diplomacy. The WNBA star and two-time Olympic gold medalist is to return to court on Tuesday. That is a month after the beginning of the trial in which she could face 10 years in prison if convicted. As the trial has progressed, the Biden administration has faced rising calls for action to win her release. In an extraordinary move, Secretary of State Antony Blinken last week spoke to his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, urging him to accept a deal under which Griner and Paul Whelan, an American imprisoned in Russia on an espionage conviction, would go free. NFL – Browns QB Watson suspended 6 games, NFL weighs appeal Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson was suspended for six games after being accused by two dozen women in Texas of sexual misconduct during massage treatments, in what a disciplinary officer said was behavior “more egregious than any before reviewed by the NFL.” The punishment handed out by the game’s disciplinary officer, former federal judge Sue L. Robinson, fell well short of what the NFL had asked for: an open-ended suspension of at least a year for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. Watson, who played for four seasons with Houston before being traded to Cleveland in March, recently settled 23 of 24 lawsuits filed by women alleging sexual harassment and assault during the treatments in 2020 and 2021. NFL – Watson discipline didn’t require legal charges Deshaun Watson and the Cleveland Browns found out the severity of the quarterback’s punishment when he was suspended for six games for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy. Disciplinary officer Sue L. Robinson made the decision after the NFL pushed for an indefinite suspension of at least one year and Watson’s legal team argued for no suspension during a three-day hearing. A player doesn’t have to be convicted or even charged with a crime to be disciplined for conduct detrimental to the league, per the collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and the NFL Players’ Association. Ezekiel Elliott, Ben Roethlisberger, Jameis Winston and Kareem Hunt are among players who have received suspensions despite not being charged criminally. NFL – Fans debate Watson’s 6-game suspension for assault claims Football fans are debating the six-game suspension for Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson. The reaction was mixed even among Browns fans who hope Watson can be a franchise quarterback. Touchdown Browns Backers Club President Rhonda Whitelock says some club members have told her they won’t watch the Browns anymore. She says other members don’t believe the women who have accused Watson of sexual misconduct during massage treatments. NFL – Lions giving Harris chance to earn starting cornerback spot Under a previous head coach and front office, Detroit drafted Will Harris in 2019 to play safety. Now, the Lions are giving him a chance to be a much-needed cornerback in coach Dan Campbell’s second season. Harris’ move to cornerback started in the middle of last season, when injuries at the position forced Lions coaches to adjust on the fly. In an effort to narrow his focus, the Lions are making Harris a full-time outside cornerback this year, and they’re giving him a shot at the starting job opposite Amani Orurwariye. NFL – Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, Arizona QB Kyler Murray test positive for COVID-19 Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll has tested positive for COVID-19, the team announced. The Seahawks issued a statement about an hour before their fifth training camp practice started. The team said Carroll — who is fully vaccinated — tested positive on Sunday and is experiencing mild symptoms and is remaining at home. Carroll intends on participating in team meetings virtually until he is cleared to rejoin the team. Carroll is the oldest coach in the league and will turn 71 in mid-September. Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray has tested positive for COVID-19. The two-time Pro Bowl selection tested positive on Sunday. Coach Kliff Kingsbury said on Monday that Murray was experiencing “minor” symptoms. The coach added that Murray will miss a minimum of five days. Murray also sat out Saturday’s practice with a sore right wrist. Kingsbury said that injury was “getting better.” Golf – LIV – Norman says Tiger Woods turned down $700-800M Saudi offer Tiger Woods turned down a Saudi offer Greg Norman says was in the neighborhood of $700 million to $800 million. Norman confirmed a figure he previously told the Washington Post. Norman was speaking to Fox News’ Tucker Carlson for an interview aired Monday night. The interview took place Sunday at Trump National in Bedminster, New Jersey. That’s where the third LIV Golf Invitational was held. Norman says he wasn’t the CEO of LIV Golf when Woods got the offer. Woods has spoken out against the Saudi-funded league. He says players who sign are turning their backs on the PGA Tour. MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Toronto Blue Jays 5, Detroit Tigers 3 San Francisco Giants 4, Chicago Cubs 2 White Sox were off Blue Jays 5, Tigers 3 – Chapman 2 HRs, Kikuchi wins in return as Jays top Tigers 5-3 Matt Chapman hit two home runs, Yusei Kikuchi came off the injured list to pitch five solid innings and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Detroit Tigers 5-3 for their 10th victory in 12 games. Chapman hit a two-run homer off left-hander Tyler Alexander in the fourth and a solo shot off Angel De Jesus in the sixth, the ninth multi-homer game of his career and first this season. The home runs were his 17th and 18th of the year. Jonathan Schoop and Willi Castro hit solo home runs for the Tigers. Giants 4, Cubs 2 – Wood takes no-hitter into 7th, Giants beat Cubs to stop skid Alex Wood took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and the San Francisco Giants beat the Chicago Cubs 4-2 to stop a seven-game slide. Yermín Mercedes hit an early two-run single, and four Giants pitchers combined on a three-hitter to snap Chicago’s six-game winning streak. An umpire’s ruling that appeared to give the Cubs a break instead contributed to San Francisco’s three-run third. Wood allowed two hits in 6 2/3 innings, striking out two and walking two. His no-hit bid ended in the seventh on Ian Happ’s leadoff single. Two outs later, Patrick Wisdom belted his 18th homer of the season. Tonight Detroit (Garcia 0-0) at Toronto (Manoah 11-4), 7:07 p.m. WSJM/WCSY 6:45 Oakland (Kaprielian 1-5) at Chicago White Sox (Lynn 1-3), 8:10 p.m. Chicago Cubs (Stroman 2-5) at San Francisco (Cobb 3-4), 10:15 p.m. MLB – Unvaccinated Chafin misses Tigers’ series at Blue Jays The Detroit Tigers put unvaccinated left-hander Andrew Chafin on the restricted list before the opener of a four-game series in Toronto and selected right-hander Bryan Garcia from Triple-A Toledo as a substitute player. Detroit also added right-hander Derek Law and shortstop Zack Short to its taxi squad. Chafin signed a $13 million, two-year contract in March. He will lose $142,857 from his $6.5 million salary this season. MLB – Blue Jays announce $230 million stadium renovation plan The Blue Jays announced plans Thursday for a $230 million renovation of Rogers Centre, their downtown home since 1989 when it was knows as SkyDome, but said the change will not involve replacing the artificial turf surface with grass. The renovation, to be undertaken in stages over the next two or three winters, will begin with the team adding raised bullpens in left and right field, adjusting the dimensions and heights of the current outfield wall, and adapting the outfield seating areas to add bars and patios. Blue Jays president Mark Shapiro did not disclose the outfield dimensions and fence heights, saying they have not been finalized. WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Tonight Las Vegas Aces at Indiana Fever, 7:00 p.m. New York Liberty at Chicago Sky, 8:00 p.m. WNBA – Kremlin poker-faced on US swap offer to free Griner, Whelan The Kremlin has warned that a possible prisoner swap with the United States involving American basketball star Brittney Griner needs to be negotiated quietly without fanfare. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Wednesday that Washington had offered Russia a deal that would bring home Griner and another jailed American, Paul Whelan. Asked Thursday about the U.S. offer, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov replied that prisoner swaps are typically negotiated discreetly behind the scenes. He emphasized that “no agreements have been finalized” and refused to provide further details. Griner has been detained in Russia since inspectors at a Moscow airport found vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage. NFL – Cardinals remove Kyler Murray’s independent-study addendum The Arizona Cardinals have removed an addendum to quarterback Kyler Murray’s $230.5 million, five-year contract that mandated at least four hours of “independent study” during game weeks. In a statement Thursday, the team said: “After seeing the distraction it created, we removed the addendum from the contract. It was clearly perceived in ways that were never intended. Our confidence in Kyler Murray is as high as it’s ever been and nothing demonstrates our belief in his ability to lead this team more than the commitment reflected in his contract.” Earlier in the day, Murray declared that there have been no “shortcuts” to success during his football career, no matter what provisions the Cardinals included in his new contract. NFL – QB Ryan challenges Colts to keep up with quick-paced tempo Matt Ryan has seen and done just about everything other than winning a Super Bowl in his 14-year NFL career. He’s been the league MVP. He’s won a conference title. He’s steadily climbed the league’s career passing charts. But now, for the first time since his rookie season, Ryan is settling into a whole new world. The Indianapolis Colts new quarterback is getting acclimated to a new playbook, new teammates, a new training camp facility and a new routine. NFL – Rodgers says Packers offense can grow from early adversity Aaron Rodgers says he expects the Green Bay Packers offense to face plenty of adversity during the preseason as it lines up against a defense that seems far more settled. The four-time MVP quarterback believes that could prove beneficial in the long run. Rodgers says that taking some lumps early is “going to build some character.” The two-time reigning MVP is in a much different situation than last year. He’s smoothed over his relationship with team management and is dealing with a new group of receivers now that All-Pro wideout Davante Adams is with the Las Vegas Raiders. Golf – PGA – Finau, Pendrith share Rocket Mortgage lead at 8-under 64 Tony Finau, coming off his third career victory on the PGA Tour, and Taylor Pendrith shared the first-round lead at 8-under 64 on Thursday in the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Former U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson, Michael Thompson, Cameron Champ, Lee Hodges and Matt Wallace were two shots back. Si Woo Kim and Kurt Kitayama, both ranked among the top 70 in the world, were in the pack at 67 at Detroit Golf Club. The leaderboard was filled with players who took advantage of favorable scoring conditions with morning tee times. In the afternoon, the wind picked up and the scores did as well. Finau rallied from a five-shot deficit with 11 holes left to win the 3M Open by three shots Sunday in Minnesota. Golf – Trump says Saudi-funded tour creates ‘gold rush’ for players Former President Donald Trump says the Saudi-funded LIV Golf circuit has created a “gold rush” for players. Trump played a round Thursday on his home course at Trump National Bedminster. This one was the LIV Golf Invitational pro-am. He played with Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau. Trump says what the Saudi-backed league is doing is good for golf because it gives players an alternative. It’s been a disruptor for more than the PGA Tour. Now the Ryder Cup is involved. Henrik Stenson signed with LIV and was stripped of his captaincy for Europe. Reports indicated Luke Donald will be replacing him. Nassar – FBI open to settling claims by gymnasts abused by Nassar The FBI has reached out to attorneys representing Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles and other women who say they were sexually assaulted by Larry Nassar to begin settlement talks in the $1 billion claim they brought against the federal government. That’s according to three people familiar with the matter. The FBI’s general counsel contacted the lawyers for Olympic gold medalists Biles, Aly Raisman and McKayla Maroney and dozens of other women on Wednesday. The people say the FBI’s attorneys told the lawyers for the women that they had received the federal tort claims and to say the agency was “interested” in a resolution, including discussions about a potential settlement. This week, the Saudi-funded LIV Golf Invitational series is holding its third-ever tournament, LIV Bedminster, at a golf course owned by former president Donald Trump. Now there's a sentence that our 2015 selves—even our 2020 selves—couldn't have imagined writing. But here we are, and we need to come to grips with some complex topics. That's why Brendan Quinn's article “LIV Golf and the king-sized ambition behind a game on the bring,” published yesterday in The Athletic, is so valuable. It calls on the expertise of those who have been studying Saudi Arabia and its royal family for decades, and presents a clear, detailed picture of where LIV Golf came from, how it's financed, and how it fits into the Saudi government's plans for the future. Brendan discusses all of this and more with Garrett Morrison in this episode.
The 3rd LIV Golf event takes place this week at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster, the course that was meant to host the 2022 PGA Championship before it was moved to Southern Hills. Elk & Diane discuss LIV Golf, the latest news, the course and picks for the week ahead. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This past weekend, the second event of the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Invitational series was staged at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club outside of Portland, Oregon. The Fried Egg's own Garrett Morrison was on site, and he joins Andy Johnson to reflect on what he saw. Garrett and Andy talk about the shotgun start, the team format, player attitudes, and a variety of other topics. They also make some projections about the futures of both LIV and the PGA Tour. Warning: if you'd rather not see men's professional golf be taken over by an autocracy's reputation-laundering scheme, things are starting to look a little grim. Read "Smashing Pumpkin," Garrett's story about the battle that broke out within Pumpkin Ridge's membership when the LIV Portland event was announced in March.
Another busy, controversy-fueled week in the world of golf. The second LIV Golf Invitational is in Portland, and before it gets underway on Thursday, Elk & Diane talk about the new recruits, announcements from the PGA TOUR, what it's like to be a caddie on the LIV tour and preview Pumpkin Ridge Golf Course with some picks. The 36-year-old Carpenter was signed on May 26 after spending the first seven weeks at Texas’ Triple-A Round Rock. Carpenter became the second player since 1900 to hit six home runs in his first 10 games for a team after Colorado’s Trevor Story in 2016. Curry scored 43 points in Golden State’s 107-97 victory in Game 4 on Friday night to even the NBA Finals at 2 wins apiece heading into Game 5 back in San Francisco on Monday. Boston coach Ime Udoka is counting on everybody getting involved defensively to put more pressure on Curry all over the floor and also to be more physical with the all-time 3-point leader. NBA – Green looks to make impact for Warriors even without scoring When the Golden State Warriors made their fourth-quarter push to get back into the NBA Finals, Draymond Green had the unusual role as spectator. The versatile Green who has been one of the stalwarts of Golden State’s dynasty got pulled in crunch time of Game 4 in what was a and effective decision by coach Steve Kerr. Now with the series shifting back to California tied heading into Game 5, Kerr said he has no concerns about what he’ll get out of Green the rest of the way. NHL – Avalanche, Lightning set for anticipated Stanley Cup clash The two-time defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning face the best in the West Colorado Avalanche in the Stanley Cup Final beginning Wednesday in Denver. Tampa Bay is the first team since Wayne Gretzky’s Edmonton Oilers from 1983-85 to make the final in three consecutive years. The Lightning are looking to be the NHL’s first three-peat champions since the New York Islanders won the Cup four times in a row from 1980-83. Colorado’s core led by Nathan MacKinnon used depth and speed to break through to the final for the first time after several disappointing playoff performances. The Avalanche are going for the franchise’s first championship since 2001. Ionescu tied the WNBA record for triple doubles with the second of her career when she finished with 27 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists, accomplishing the feat by the end of the third quarter — the fastest in league history. It wasn’t enough for New York (5-9), which had won four of its past five games. Trailing 86-85, Vandersloot took a pass from Candace Parker on the wing and drained the 3. New York had one last chance, but couldn’t get a shot off. WNBA – Taylor calls for Griner’s release at Hall of Fame induction Penny Taylor used her induction into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame to call for the release of her former Phoenix Mercury teammate Brittney Griner. Taylor noted it’s been 114 days since the seven-time WNBA All-Star was detained in Russia. Taylor called for President Joe Biden’s help freeing Griner, saying “BG is our family.” Taylor also said the entire global sports community needs to come together and insist that freeing Griner be a priority. The two-time Olympic gold medalist has been detained since Feb. 17. DeLisha Milton-Jones wrapped up her acceptance speech with a call to bring Griner home. DePaul coach Doug Bruno also called for Griner’s release saying, “Enough is enough." NCAABSB – Notre Dame stuns No. 1 Tennessee 7-3, advances to CWS Freshman Jack Findlay threw five shutout innings in relief and back-to-back home runs by catcher David LaManna and Jack Brannigan in the seventh sparked Notre Dame to a 7-3 victory over No. 1 overall seed Tennessee in the championship game of the Knoxville Super Regional. Notre Dame (40-15) will be making just its third College World Series appearance. The Fighting Irish’s other trips came in 1957 and 2002. Findlay (6-2) worked out of a jam after entering the game in the bottom of the fifth inning with nobody out, a run in and a runner on second, trailing 3-1. Findlay held the Volunteers in check from there, allowing a single and two walks, while striking out four to get the win. Golf – LIV/PGA – PGA chief slams Saudi-funded league as series of exhibitions PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan is blasting the Saudi-based LIV Golf league as a series of exhibitions that spends billions to recruit players without getting a return on the investment. He also says players unaware they might face criticism for taking Saudi money are “living under a rock.” They’re his first public comments since he suspended PGA Tour members who signed up for Greg Norman’s new league and played in the first LIV event last week outside London. Monahan spoke during the CBS telecast of the Canadian Open and pointed out that was “pure competition" that creates stars. Golf – PGA – McIlroy defends Canadian Open title in strong LIV response Rory McIlroy won the RBC Canadian Open on Sunday and gave the PGA Tour a strong response to the start of the Saudi-funded LIV Golf Invitational, closing with an 8-under 62 to win a wild race to the finish with Justin Thomas and Tony Finau. McIlroy finished at 19-under 261 at St. George’s for a two-stroke victory. Finau shot a 64 to finish second alone. Thomas bogeyed the final two holes for a 64 to finish third at 14 under. Justin Rose matched the tournament- and course-record with a 60 — with three eagles and three bogeys — to tie for fourth. NASCAR – Suarez gets historic win at Sonoma Daniel Suárez became the first Mexican-born driver to win a NASCAR Cup Series race on Sunday on Sonoma Raceway. The 30-year-old Mexican driver held off Chris Buescher to claim his first victory in his 195th career start. He also drove his Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet to the third Cup Series victory for this 2-year-old team co-owned by former driver Justin Marks and music star Pitbull. Suárez got past Buescher and took charge on this hilly road course in Northern California wine country early in the final stage. He persevered through a pit stop and a caution to emerge with his lead intact with 23 laps to go. NASCAR – NASCAR’s preseason Clash returns to LA Coliseum in 2023 NASCAR’s season-opening exhibition Clash race is rolling back to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in 2023. NASCAR announced Sunday it will return to the Southern California sports landmark next season after The Clash’s highly successful debut there four months ago. NASCAR got some of its best reviews in years for the 2022 Clash, which took place on a temporary 0.25-mile track inside the venerable Coliseum. Boxing – Floyd Mayweather Jr. touched by Hall of Fame induction Floyd Mayweather Jr. was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in a ceremony that included the past three classes. Mayweather credited his mom, dad and sister for much of his success and said his dad, who trained him, would get his Hall of Fame ring. The pandemic forced the postponement of the previous two induction ceremonies, making 2022 a crowded affair. The ceremony was moved from the Hall of Fame’s home in Canastota, New York, to Turning Stone Resort and Casino in nearby Verona to accommodate the 36 honorees. Former heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko was not there. He’s in Ukraine helping his brother, the mayor of Kyiv, but sent a short video. The two-time NBA MVP injured his ankle late in Game 3. Boston won 116-100 to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Tonight Chicago Sky at Connecticut Sun, 7:00 p.m. New York Liberty at Indiana Fever, 7:00 p.m. Golf – LIV/PGA – PGA Tour says Saudi-paid players no longer eligible for tour The PGA Tour says members who are playing in the Saudi-funded league in London are no longer eligible to play tour events. Commissioner Jay Monahan sent a memo indicating the sanctions against Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson and 15 other players. The memo went out a short time after the LIV Golf Invitational outside London began with a 48-player field. The decision includes the Presidents Cup. Monahan says even if players resigned their membership, they are not eligible as nonmembers to get sponsor exemptions to tournaments. The USGA already said players can still play the U.S. Open next week. LIV Golf is run by Greg Norman and funded by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund. It responded to the PGA Tour’s decision by calling it vindictive and divisive. The overall prize money is an 11% increase over last year, when capacity was reduced because of coronavirus restrictions, and a 5.4% increase over 2019. He says it could be reintroduced next year. The team did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Tampa Bay Lightning desperately needed to win game four, and they did, tying the New York Rangers at two games, apiece. The Los Angeles Angels deemed Joe Maddon's services no longer necessary. The Deshaun Watson story has hit a fever pitch and the Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, and the NFL all look bad. Also, D.K. Metcalf was inexcusably absent from the first day of mandatory minicamp for the Seattle Seahawks, free agent Quarterback Cam Newton can still play, the USGA will not bar any golfer who has qualified for the US Open because they choose to play in the LIV Golf Invitational, and the Cincinnati Reds got a great start from Graham Ashcraft and five home runs en route to a big win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.Linktree.com/LockedOnNBALinktree.com/LockedOnNFLLinktree.com/LockedOnMLBLinktree.com/LockedOnNHL Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Detroit Tigers 5, Pittsburgh Pirates 3 Baltimore Orioles 9, Chicago Cubs 3 Chicago White Sox 4, Los Angeles Dodgers 0 Tigers 5, Pirates 3 – Rain man: Skubal wins 4th straight as Tigers top Pirates 5-3 Tarik Skubal pitched seven steady innings to win his fourth straight decision and Harold Castro hit a two-run single to lead the Detroit Tigers to a rain-delayed 5-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. After the start was pushed back more than two hours, Skubal gave up three runs and six hits while striking out nine and walking one. The left-hander has worked a career-high seven innings in three consecutive outings and is 4-0 with a 1.60 ERA in his last seven starts. Castro’s hit, a liner up the middle, capped a three-run fourth that put the Tigers in front 4-1. Rookie Spencer Torkelson drove in the first run with a double. Orioles 9, Cubs 3 – Orioles hit 5 home runs, cruise past Cubs 9-3 Cedric Mullins and Trey Mancini hit successive homers, sparking a power surge that carried the Baltimore Orioles past the Chicago Cubs 9-3. Jorge Mateo, Austin Hays and Ramón Urías also connected for the Orioles, who beat the Cubs for the first time in seven tries since 2008. Reliever Bryan Baker earned the win after allowing one run and one hit over 1 1/3 innings. Christopher Morel homered on the game’s first pitch off rookie Kyle Bradish and has reached base safely in 21 consecutive games to begin his career, extending his Cubs’ record. Morel also had an RBI triple in the sixth. White Sox 4, Dodgers 0 – Kopech, Pollock lead White Sox to 4-0 win over Dodgers Michael Kopech pitched six innings of one-hit ball, pinch-hitter AJ Pollock delivered a two-run double against his former team and the Chicago White Sox beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-0. Pollock’s clutch swing off the bench sparked a four-run sixth that sent the White Sox to their third consecutive victory. It was the fourth time this season Kopech worked at least five innings and limited an opponent to one hit. The right-hander struck out eight and walked one, lowering his ERA to 1.94. The NL West-leading Dodgers dropped their third straight. Today Detroit (Skubal 5-2) at Pittsburgh (Keller 2-5), 12:35 p.m. WSJM/WCSY 12:15 Chicago Cubs (Stroman 2-5) at Baltimore (Lyles 3-4), 7:05 p.m. L.A. Dodgers (Gonsolin 6-0) at Chicago White Sox (Cueto 0-2), 8:10 p.m. MLB – Angels fire manager Joe Maddon amid 12-game losing streak The Los Angeles Angels have fired manager Joe Maddon with the team mired in a 12-game losing streak. Third base coach Phil Nevin will be the Angels’ interim manager when they host Boston on Tuesday night. Maddon went 130-148 with the Angels, who hired him before the coronavirus-shortened 2020 season. After finishing with losing records in Maddon’s first two seasons, the Angels were off to a strong 27-17 start before their current losing streak began. They are one loss shy of tying the longest skid in franchise history. NHL – National Hockey League – 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs – Conference Finals Last Night Tampa Bay Lightning 4, New York Rangers 1 (Series tied 2-2) Lightning 4, Rangers 1 – Lightning beat Rangers 4-1 in Game 4 to even East final Nikita Kucherov scored on a breakaway and Andrei Vasilevskiy had 33 saves , helping the Tampa Bay Lightning shut down the New York Rangers 4-1 and even the NHL’s Eastern Conference final at two games apiece. Kucherov took a pass from Ondrej Palat in the middle of the ice and skated in on goaltender Igor Shesterkin to give the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions a two-goal lead just over 13 minutes into the second period. Palat, Pat Maroon and Steven Stamkos also scored for the Lightning, who have rebounded from losing the first two games of the series on the road to keep their bid to become the first team in nearly 40 years to win three consecutive Stanley Cup titles alive. Game 5 is Thursday night at Madison Square Garden. NBA – National Basketball Association – 2022 NBA Finals Tonight Golden State Warriors at Boston Celtics, 9:00 p.m. (Series tied 1-1) WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Tonight Indiana Fever at Connecticut Sun, 7:00 p.m. Chicago Sky at Washington Mystics, 8:00 p.m. WNBA – Los Angeles Sparks fire coach and GM Derek Fisher The Los Angeles Sparks have fired head coach and general manager Derek Fisher the team announced. Fisher took over the team before the 2019 season and became the GM a year later. He finished his career with a 54-46 record as coach. The Sparks missed the playoffs last season for the first time since 2011 and bolstered their roster by adding All-Star Liz Cambage in the offseason. They had a difficult schedule to start the season with nine of their first 12 games on the road and are 5-7. WNBA – Griner’s fate tangled up with other American held in Russia Brittney Griner is easily the most prominent American locked up by a foreign country. But the WNBA star’s case is tangled up with that of another prisoner few Americans have ever heard of. Paul Whelan has been held in Russia since his December 2018 arrest on espionage charges he and the U.S. government say are false. He was left out of a prisoner exchange in April that brought home yet another detainee, Marine veteran Trevor Reed. That resolution escalates pressure on the Biden administration to avoid a repeat scenario of another one-for-one swap that does not include Whelan. Golf – LIV – Dustin Johnson quits PGA membership to play in Saudi league Two-time major winner Dustin Johnson says he has resigned his PGA Tour membership to participate in the new golf series backed by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund. The first LIV Golf Invitational, which offers $25 million in prize money, is taking place outside London starting Thursday. Johnson says he “had to think long and hard” about leaving the PGA Tour, seemingly ending his hopes of competing in the Ryder Cup for the United States. Johnson is No. 15 in the world, the highest-ranked player in the field. Golf – Tiger Woods says his leg not ready and he won’t play US Open Tiger Woods has pulled out of the U.S. Open and says his body "needs more time to get stronger for major championship golf.” He said he hopes to be ready to play in a charity pro-am event in Ireland ahead of the British Open at St. Andrews in July. The U.S. Open is next week at The Country Club at Brookline outside of Boston. Woods made a surprise return to golf at the Masters just 14 months after he broke bones in his right leg and ankle in a car crash. He later played the PGA Championship at Southern Hills but withdrew after the third round. Woods has won the U.S. Open three times, most recently in 2008. Golf – US Open to accept Mickelson and all eligible players Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson and other players competing in the Saudi-funded rival golf league are free to play the U.S. Open next week. That was always expected but confirmed Tuesday by the USGA. The USGA says if a player earned his way into the the U.S. Open, should that be taken away because he is playing a different league? It felt the answer was no. CEO Mike Whan says more than 9,000 people signed up for the U.S. Open and the USGA is not in the business of policing what they stand for. NFL – Rodgers unsure how long he will play beyond this season Aaron Rodgers says he’s unsure how much longer he will keep playing football. But he’s definitive about at least one element of his playing future. The four-time MVP quarterback expects to retire as a Green Bay Packer. That scenario seemed uncertain when Rodgers skipped the Packers mandatory minicamp last year in a standoff with team officials. That relationship has since improved enough that Rodgers signed a contract extension with the Packers after producing his second straight MVP season. Rodgers said Tuesday at the Packers minicamp that he doesn’t know yet whether he will play beyond this upcoming season. Olympics – Figure Skating – Figure skating minimum age rises to 17 before 2026 Olympics No 15-year-old figure skaters will be allowed to compete at the 2026 Olympics following the controversy surrounding Russian national champion Kamila Valieva at this year’s Beijing Games. A new age limit for figure skaters at senior international events has been passed by the International Skating Union that will raise the minimum age to 17 before the next Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. The limit will be phased in with 16-year-olds allowed to compete in the 2023-24 season. It will then rise to 17 for the season before the Olympics. NCAASFB – Coaches: Doubleheaders in WCWS semis threaten player safety Oklahoma bounced back from losing a Women’s College World Series semifinal to UCLA on Monday, dominating the Bruins in a game that started 30 minutes after the first one. Oklahoma coach Patty Gasso said the turnaround should not have been so quick. Gasso called it a player safety issue. She likes that the NCAA’s Division I Competition Oversight Committee added a day between the semifinals and the finals in changes made before this season, but she would give it up for time between semifinal games. He coached the Bruins within one victory of the Stanley Cup in 2019. Cassidy immediately becomes a top candidate for vacancies in Philadelphia, Chicago, Winnipeg, Vegas and Detroit and any others that may now come open. The Bruins are expected to be without first-line left winger Brad Marchand and top defenseman Charlie McAvoy for at least the first two months of next season. Cassidy was previously an assistant coach with the Chicago Blackhawks, he was also a head coach of the Grand Rapids Griffins. NHL – Jets’ Kyle Connor wins Lady Byng for gentlemanly conduct Winnipeg Jets forward Kyle Connor has won the Lady Byng Trophy, given to the NHL’s most gentlemanly player. Connor tied for the second-fewest number of minor penalties during the regular season. He was penalized just twice in over 1,700 minutes of ice time that included regular short-handed shifts and matchups against top offensive opponents. It’s his first Lady Byng honor. Last year’s winner, Jaccob Slavin of Carolina, was second in voting by the Professional Hockey Writer Association. Minnesota defenseman Jared Spurgeon was third. Soccer – Canada men back at practice after meeting with federation Canada Soccer says its World Cup-bound men’s team has returned to practice after refusing to play in an exhibition match against Panama because of strained labor negotiations. The nation’s governing body announced on social media on Monday that the two sides had met the night before. The team returned to practice and future meetings were scheduled. Canada is set to play Curacao at Vancouver’s BC Place on Thursday in the CONCACAF National League. NFL – Denver Broncos sale could come as early as this month The Denver Broncos could have a new owner as soon as this month in what’s expected to be the most expensive deal in sports history at around $4.5 billion. NFL – All-Pro Aaron Donald returning to LA Rams with a big raise All-Pro defensive tackle Aaron Donald is getting a big raise to stay with the Los Angeles Rams under a reworked contract through 2024. The team didn’t disclose terms of the new deal, but the NFL Network reported Donald is getting a $40 million raise that will make him the highest-paid defensive player in the league. Donald was already under contract for the next three seasons, but he openly contemplated retirement after he won his first ring with the Rams in February. Instead, the seven-time All-Pro will be back to torment offenses at the heart of Los Angeles’ defense. NFL – Browns’ Watson named in 24th lawsuit by massage therapists A 24th woman has filed a civil lawsuit alleging sexual misconduct by Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, who is also awaiting possible discipline from the NFL. The latest lawsuit was filed in Houston by attorney Tony Buzbee, who is representing all 24 women. Buzbee says in a statement that the women “continue to stand firm for what is right." Golf – LIV – Mickelson joins Saud-funded league Phil Mickelson is ending his 4-month hiatus from competitive golf and is joining the Saudi-funded rival league. Mickelson was the last big name added to the 48-man field for the LIV Golf Invitational outside London that starts Friday. The six-time major champion was the chief recruiter for the Saudi league. But it appeared to backfire when he was quoted as accusing the PGA Tour of “obnoxious greed.” He also says while he’s aware of Saudi Arabia’s human rights record, it would be worth it to join if it meant having leverage against the PGA Tour. Mickelson says he’ll still play the majors. Golf – Jack Nicklaus to become honorary citizen of St. Andrews Jack Nicklaus is returning to St. Andrews in July to become an honorary citizen. And this time he’ll be joining some exclusive company. The honor from the town council has been awarded to only two other American citizens. One was amateur great Bobby Jones in 1958. The other was Benjamin Franklin in 1759. Nicklaus won two of his three British Open titles at St. Andrews. The 1976 women’s 4×100 freestyle relay swimming team, anchored by Shirley Babashoff in its stunning upset over the East Germans, and the 2002 men’s Paralympic sled hockey team also were voted into the hall by a mix of Olympic and Paralympic athletes, media and administrators and fans. The weekend at Innisbrook resulted in a playoff and a repeat winner for the Valspar Championship. But hosts Alex Lauzon and Michael Russell are most interested in the questionable fashion choice for one of the big stars who played the weekend (1:48). A week late (and maybe a penny short?) was the official announcement for the LIV Golf Invitational series, featuring courses all around the world. But Alex really wants to know: who's playing (6:17)? On the Ladies European Tour, American Kelly Whaley recorded an incredible 8 birdies in a row, proving once again that the ladies are just as exciting as the men (10:48). The past week allowed Alex and Michael to play another D3 match from their respective corners of the world, and it sounds like they're going to need a rubber match to decide who's the best (12:31). This weekend is a double dose of golf action, with the Corales Putacana Championship and the always exciting WGC Dell Match Play. Alex gives us a look at what to expect as he hits the course as a volunteer once again in Austin (13:54). In Tuned In, Michael is excited for new Mario Kart courses hitting the Switch, while Alex is keeping his eyes on the weather in central Texas (19:05). This week's guest is a returning favorite, golf influencer Mei Brennan. Mei chats with Alex about how her internet pretense has exploded in the past two years since her last appearance on the podcast, and shares the creepiest asks in her DMs (22:12). Tom Brady's retirement was short, and he's teasing everyone with who he's not posting workout videos with, especially those Patriot fans (46:41). The Madness is real in March, and everyone's brackets are busted, but Michael is all in on Saint Peters (48:34). As the guys #AlwaysEndWithFood, Alex shares his obsession with Cheesecake Factory, and Michael attempts to recreate a childhood favorite (52:58).
