If you're homophobic you might not want to listen to this episode or hate-listen helps with my streams.   Brittany G is fairly healed from her time in a Russian Penal colony.  The absolute absurdity of the hardcore trafficking sentence for CBD oil. But straight and gay alike want the love that drove Cherelle Griner to get in the President grill about #freeBrittany until she walked off that plane. She looks bright and healthy in the above image but I like her better with her locs. I am spending downtime watching when certain Real Housewives Franchises went left. When the morning news broke to the world that WNBA Star Brittney Griner was arrested in Russia, it brought the invasion against Ukraine up close and personal to the Black community. The WNBA Star, age 32 at the time, was detained in Russia on February 17, 2022, for allegedly possessing cannabis oil in her luggage after arriving in Moscow from New York City. Griner's wife, Cherelle Griner, along with a host of celebrity friends like Lebron James, pressured the Biden Administration to bring Griner back home, adding an international spotlight to her case. On August 4, 2022, she was sentenced to nine years in prison following weeks of a long trial. Black America poured out their frustrations on social media criticizing President Biden's slow efforts to negotiate her release with Russian President, Vladimir Putin as there were concerns of her personal safety given that she was both black and lesbian. Griner's case was even more complicated given that her negotiation was during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. More importantly, how would Griner's prisoner swap affect U.S. national security? In this episode, Alexanderia Haidara talks with Dr. Nola Haynes to discuss the implications of Griner's case, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the geopolitical shifts with China. YOU MUST CELEBRATE Brittney Griner being released and NOT THINK about Who we GAVE UPPresident Joe Biden had already personally informed Cherelle Griner that her wife was being released from Russian detention when aides arrived with more news: Brittney Griner was now securely out of Russia – and on the telephone.“It's Joe Biden,” the president said when the call was patched through. “Welcome, welcome home!”Nearly ten months after Brittney Griner was arrested at a Moscow airport, the jubilant moment in the Oval Office on Thursday amounted to the culmination of prolonged, frustrating negotiations and one painful decision that left another detained American disappointed and wondering what his fate may be.Ad FeedbackIn conversations across an array of government channels, Russian officials were clear with their American counterparts: they would release Griner – and only Griner – in exchange for a convicted Russian arms dealer nicknamed the “merchant of death.”Because of the matter's exceedingly high profile, it was certain those conditions had been set by Russian President Vladimir Putin himself, one US official said.Despite Biden's attempts to link Griner's case to that of Paul Whelan, a former US Marine arrested on espionage charges in 2018 and sentenced to 16 years in prison two years later, it became plain recently that Putin would not budge.“The choice was bringing Brittney Griner home right now, or bringing no one home right now,” one senior administration official said.Exclusive: Paul Whelan tells CNN he is 'disappointed' that more has not been done to secure his releaseWith winter approaching at the penal colony where Griner was being held, Biden faced a singularly presidential decision. Welcoming Griner home would fulfill a promise and end the nightmare endured by her and her family. But any victory would be tempered by the inability to secure Whelan's freedom and inevitable blowback over the release of one the most prolific arms dealers of the past decades. The situation was complicated further when senior law enforcement officials, angry at the prospect of releasing a notorious figure it had taken years to capture and alarmed by the precedent Bout's release would set, raised strong objections.Biden took the deal.“Brittney will soon be back in the arms of her loved ones and – and she should have been there all along,” the president said from the Roosevelt Room, where he was joined by Griner's wife. “This is a day we've worked toward for a long time.”Moments earlier in Abu Dhabi, Griner had stepped from h- CNNhttps://www.cnn.com/2022/12/08/politics/biden-griner-whelan-decision/index.htmlSupport the show

Russia freed WNBA star Brittney Griner early today in a dramatic prisoner exchange, as the US released notorious Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout but failed to win freedom for another American, Paul Whelan, who has been jailed for nearly four years. The swap, at a time of heightened tensions over Ukraine, achieved a top goal for President Joe Biden but carried a heavy price. “She's safe, she's on a plane, she's on her way home,” Biden said from the White House, where he was accompanied by Griner's wife, Cherelle, and administration officials. The deal, the second such exchange in eight months with Russia, procured the release of the most prominent American detained abroad. Griner is a two-time Olympic gold medalist whose months-long imprisonment on drug charges brought unprecedented attention to the population of wrongful detainees. Biden's authorisation to release a Russian felon once nicknamed “the Merchant of Death” underscored the escalating pressure that his administration faced to get Griner home, particularly after the recent resolution of her criminal case and her subsequent transfer to a penal colony. The Russian Foreign Ministry also confirmed the swap, saying in a statement carried by Russian news agencies the exchange took place in Abu Dhabi and that Bout had been flown home. Russian and US officials had conveyed cautious optimism in recent weeks after months of strained negotiations, with Biden saying in November he was hopeful that Russia would engage in a deal now the midterm elections were completed. A top Russian official said last week a deal was possible before year's end. Even so, the fact the deal was a one-for-one swap was a surprise given US officials had for months expressed their determination to bring home both Griner and Paul Whelan, a Michigan corporate security executive jailed in Russia since December 2018 on espionage charges that his family and the US government has said are baseless. “We've not forgotten about Paul Whelan,” Biden said. “We will keep negotiating in good faith for Paul's release.” Whelan's brother David said in a statement he was “so glad” for Griner's release but also disappointed for his family. He credited the White House with giving the Whelan family advance notice and said he did not fault officials for making the deal. “The Biden Administration made the right decision to bring Ms Griner home, and to make the deal that was possible, rather than waiting for one that wasn't going to happen,” he said. In releasing Bout, the US freed a former Soviet Army lieutenant colonel whom the Justice Department once described as one of the world's most prolific arms dealers. Bout, whose exploits inspired a Hollywood movie, was serving a 25-year sentence on charges that he conspired to sell tens of millions of dollars in weapons that US officials said were to be used against Americans. The Biden administration was ultimately willing to exchange Bout if it meant Griner's freedom. The detention of one of the greatest players in WNBA history contributed to a swirl of unprecedented public attention for an individual detainee case — not to mention intense pressure on the White House. Griner's arrest in February made her the most high-profile American jailed abroad. Her status as an openly gay black woman, locked up in a country where authorities have been hostile to the LBGTQ community, infused racial, gender and social dynamics into her legal saga and made each development a matter of international importance. Her case not only brought unprecedented publicity to the dozens of Americans wrongfully detained by foreign governments, but it also emerged as a major inflection point in US-Russia diplomacy at a time of deteriorating relations prompted by Moscow's war against Ukraine. The exchange was carried out despite deteriorating relations between the powers. But the imprisonment of Americans produced a rare diplomatic opening, yielding the highest-level known contact between Washington and Moscow — a phone call between Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov — in more than five months. In an extraordinary move during otherwise secret negotiations, Blinken revealed publicly in July that the US had made a “substantial proposal” to Russia for Griner and Whelan. Though he did not specify the terms, people familiar with it said the US had offered Bout. Such a public overture drew a chiding rebuke from the Russians, who said they preferred to resolve such cases in private, and carried the risk of weakening the US government's negotiating hand for this and future deals by making the administration appear too desperate. But the announcement was also meant to communicate to the public that Biden was doing what he could and to ensure pressure on the Russians. Cherelle Griner, Brittney Griner's wife, speaks in the Roosevelt Room of the White House in Washington on Thursday about the prisoner swap, with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. Photo / AP Besides the efforts of US officials, the release also followed months of back-channel negotiations involving Bill Richardson, the former US ambassador to the United Nations and a frequent emissary in hostage talks, and his top deputy, Mickey Bergman. Griner was arrested at the Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport in February when customs officials said they found vape canisters with cannabis oil in her luggage. She pleaded guilty in July, though still faced trial because admitting guilt in Russia's judicial system does not automatically end a case. She acknowledged in court that she possessed the canisters, but said she had no criminal intent and said their presence in her luggage was due to hasty packing. Before being sentenced on August 4 and receiving a punishment her lawyers said was out of line for the offence, an emotional Griner apologised “for my mistake that I made and the embarrassment that I brought on them.” She added: “I hope in your ruling it does not end my life.” Her supporters had largely stayed quiet for weeks after her arrest, but that approach changed in May once the State Department designated her as unlawfully detained. A separate trade, Marine veteran Trevor Reed for Konstantin Yaroshenko, a Russian pilot convicted in the US in a cocaine trafficking conspiracy, spurred hope that additional such exchanges could be in the works. Whelan has been held in Russia since December 2018. The US government also classified him as wrongfully detained. He was sentenced in 2020 to 16 years in prison. Whelan was not included in the Reed prisoner swap, escalating pressure on the Biden administration to ensure that any deal that brought home Griner also included him. - Eric Tucker, Matthew Lee and Zeke Miller, APSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Gilmore also intercepted Wilson’s pass in the fourth quarter to help set up Chase McLauglin’s tying field goal. McLauglin connected from 47 yards 4:10 into overtime to give the Colts (2-2-1) the lead in the first game in NFL history that pitted quarterbacks with at least four Pro Bowl appearances each, but it featured zero touchdowns. The New England Patriots are reeling for a different reason and could use a victory just as bad as the teams prepare to match up this week. Through four weeks, the Lions are averaging an NFL-high 35 points and a league-high 437 yards per game. But even 45 points was wasn’t enough to beat Seattle at Ford Field last week to drop Detroit to 1-3. New England is also 1-3 and is looking at the prospect of having its third starting quarterback in three weeks with Mac Jones nursing a tender ankle and Brian Hoyer going on injured reserve with a concussion . If they’re out, rookie Bailey Zappe will make his first career start. NFL – Justin Fields, mired Bears offense looking for positives Although Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields and receiver Darnell Mooney connected on a big pass play last week for the first time, they’re not expecting an immediate breakthrough in the team’s offense. Heading into a game against the Minnesota Vikings, the Bears remain focused on the process of building their overall attack and not simply evaluating Fields, offensive coordinator Luke Getsy says. Still, with an offense last in passing and next-to-last in yardage, and only two touchdowns in their last 32 possessions, the Bears (2-2) have work to do to be competitive on a weekly basis. The franchise spent a lot of money entering the season to bolster the rotation and lineup and didn’t get much for it. Shortstop Javier Báez, signed to a $140 million contract, hit .238 with 17 homers, 67 RBIs and 147 strikeouts. Left-hander Eduardo Rodríguez also struggled. The Tigers did play .500 baseball over the final two months and that included wininng nine of 10 games at one point. NFL – National Football League – Week 5 Last Night Indianapolis Colts 12, Denver Broncos 9 – OT Colts 12, Broncos 9 – OT – Colts grind out 12-9 win over Broncos in injury-filled game Stephon Gilmore batted away Russell Wilson’s pass to Courtland Sutton in the end zone on fourth-and-1 from the 5 to give the Indianapolis Colts a 12-9 overtime victory over the Denver Broncos on Thursday night. The Broncos (2-3) decided against a tying chip-shot field goal by Brandon McManus, and Wilson lined up in the shotgun next to running back Melvin Gordon, then threw incomplete over the middle. Sunday Detroit Lions at New England Patriots, 1:00 p.m. Chicago Bears at Minnesota Vikings, 1:00 p.m. NFL – Lions, Patriots looking to bounce back from 1-3 starts Scoring points hasn’t been an issue for the Detroit Lions this season, but it hasn’t translated into many victories. Now, though, with No. 4 Michigan pursuing a second straight Big Ten title and what it hopes will be a second consecutive playoff berth, the Wolverines want to turn up the pressure when they visit the Hoosiers on Saturday. The couple has not spoken by phone in the four months since Griner's arrest in Russia, where she remains jailed. That was to have changed Saturday, when a long-awaited call was to have finally taken place after getting Russian government approval. But the day came and went without any contact, leaving an anguished Cherelle Griner to wonder what went wrong and to suspect at least initially that Russian authorities had thwarted the call. The U.S. State Department has classified the WNBA star as wrongfully detained as she faces up to 10 years in prison. CNN's Abby Phillip recently sat down with Griner's wife, Cherelle Griner, the night before the trial began. Abby joins AC360 to give details about Griner's decision to plead guilty and what will happen next in her trial. One NIL platform projects that more than $900 million was spent in the first year and that NIL is only going to get bigger — $1.1 billion in 2022-23. While comprehensive data is hard to come by, some of the NIL platforms and a handful of schools have provided information about the average deal, the median deal and what athletes do for that money. American basketball star Brittney Griner pleaded guilty Thursday to drug possession charges on the second day of her trial in a Russian court in a case that could see her sentenced to up to 10 years in prison. The abrupt guilty plea by the Phoenix Mercury center and two-time Olympic gold medalist came amid a growing chorus of calls for Washington to do more to secure her freedom nearly five months after her arrest in February amid rising tensions between the U.S. and Russia over Ukraine.A senior Russian diplomat said earlier that no action could be taken by Moscow on Griner's case until the trial was over, and her guilty plea could be an effort by her and her advisers to expedite the court proceedings.Griner, 31, was detained at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport while returning to play basketball in Russia, and police said they found vape canisters containing cannabis oil in her luggage.Speaking through an interpreter, Griner told the court she had no intention of committing a crime and had acted unintentionally because she had packed for Moscow in a hurry. The trial was then adjourned until July 14.Griner emphasized "that she had committed this act through negligence, unintentionally," her lawyer, Maria Blagovolina, said outside the court in the Moscow suburb of Khimki after the guilty plea."We of course hope for the leniency of the court," she said. "Considering all the circumstances of the case, taking into account the personality of our client, we believe that the admission of guilt should certainly be taken into account."Blagovolina added that other defense witnesses would be questioned at a later session.Griner was escorted to the courtroom in handcuffs and clad in a bright red T-shirt with the name "Crenshaw" and sweat pants. She also held a photo of her wife, Cherelle.U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Washington would continue to work for the release of Griner, as well as other Americans held by Moscow, including former Marine Paul Whelan."We will not relent until Brittney, Paul Whelan, and all other wrongfully detained Americans are reunited with their loved ones," he tweeted, noting that U.S. Embassy officials attended the trail again Thursday.Elizabeth Rood, the embassy's deputy chief of mission, said after the hearing that she spoke to Griner in the courtroom and shared with her a letter from President Joe Biden that she read."She's eating well, she's able to read books and under the circumstances she's doing well," Rood said."I would like again to emphasize the commitment of the U.S. government at the very highest level to bring home safely Ms. Griner and all U.S. citizens wrongfully detained as well as the commitment of the U.S. Embassy in Moscow to care for and protect the interests of all U.S. citizens detained or imprisoned in Russia," Rood said.Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov bristled at the U.S. description of Griner as "wrongfully detained" and warned that "attempts by the American side to make noise in public ... don't help the practical settlement of issues."The White House said Biden called Cherelle Griner on Wednesday to assure her that he's doing all he can to win her release as soon as possible. They spoke after Biden read a letter from Griner in which she said she feared she'd never return home.Washington hasn't disclosed its strategy in the case and the U.S. may have little leverage with Moscow because of strong animosity over its actions in Ukraine. The State Department's designation of Griner as wrongfully detained moves her case under the supervision of its special presidential envoy for hostage affairs, effectively the government's chief hostage negotiator.Asked about the possibility of Griner being swapped for a Russian jailed in the U.S., Ryabkov, the senior Russian diplomat, noted that until her trial is over "there are no formal or procedural reasons to talk about any...See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Joy Reid leads this episode of The ReidOut with the January 6th committee turning its spotlight on Jeffrey Clark, the critical figure in Donald Trump's corrupt plot to put the DOJ's imprimatur on his fake elector scheme. Plus, Joy and her guests observe how Donald Trump is not happy with Kevin McCarthy, because the January 6th hearings are completely devoid of the clowning, trolling and disruptions that Trump was apparently counting on to obscure the truth about his attempted coup. Next, we have a very special guest: Cherelle Griner joins The ReidOut. She is the wife of basketball star Brittney Griner, who has been held captive in Russia for four months. All this and more in this edition of The ReidOut on MSNBC.

WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Tonight Chicago Sky at Las Vegas Aces, 10:00 p.m. WNBA – Wife of WNBA’s Griner tells AP scheduled call never happened WNBA star Brittney Griner tried to call her wife nearly a dozen times through the American embassy in Russia on the couple’s fourth anniversary Saturday, but they never connected since the phone line at the embassy was not staffed. That’s according to Cherelle Griner, who tells the Associated Press that the couple has not spoken by phone in the four months since Griner’s arrest in Russia on drug-related charges. That was to have changed Saturday, when a long-awaited call was to have finally taken place. But the day came and went without any contact, leaving an anguished Cherelle Griner to wonder what went wrong. FINA – Ledecky leads 1-2 American finish; Italian sets backstroke mark Italy’s Thomas Ceccon has set a world record in the men’s 100 backstroke and Katie Ledecky has claimed yet another gold at the swimming world championships in Budapest.  Ceccon stunned the competition by clocking 51.60 seconds to shave 0.15 seconds off the previous best mark set by American Ryan Murphy at the 2016 Olympics. It’s the Italian’s first world title.  Ledecky extended her record haul of titles to 17 with her fourth in the 1,500 freestyle alone. Ledecky never looked threatened and finished 14.74 seconds ahead of Katie Grimes. Ledecky punched the water in delight then embraced her teammate. NCAAMBKB – Basketball player at Houston Baptist killed in New York shooting New York City police say a college basketball player was killed and eight other people were wounded Monday in an early-morning shooting at a gathering in Harlem.  Officials at Houston Baptist University say 21-year-old senior Darius Lee was killed. Judge Nancy Allf in Las Vegas refused requests to dismiss Gruden’s claim outright or move it to out-of-court talks that could be overseen by Goodell. LGBTQ ally Aron Solomon chief legal analyst at Esquire Digital gives his spin to Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about WNBA star Brittney Griner's detainment in Russia. A short summary of this unfortunate situation is that Brittney Griner was arrested on February 17th 2022 in Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport upon arrival during her seventh season playing professional basketball in Russia during the WNBA's off-season. Griner was arrested for allegedly possessing cartridges containing 'liquid with hashish oil' according to the customs service. She is currently facing charges that could carry a sentence of up to 10 years in prison. Since her arrest Griner's legal team has had access to her and been able to see her several times a week. Last Thursday it was announced that she would be held without trial until at least May 19th and then finally after over a month an official from the US embassy in Moscow was granted consular access to check on her condition. What they reported is that she is being held with two other first time detainees and in good condition. Of course we all fear that Griner is being used as a political pawn especially with Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine and that this case did not get the attention it deserved because Brittney is a Black LGBTQ athlete. If this happened to a high profile male professional basketball player like Kyrie Irving or Stephen Curry it would be an entirely different situation. It's also extremely concerning with Russia's notorious treatment of our LGBTQ community when Brittney will be safely returned to the United States and her wife. We talked to Aron about how this case has been handled up to now and where it may go from here.  Brittney Yevette Griner is a professional basketball player for the Phoenix Mercury of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Griner led the United States Women's Olympic team to a gold medal victory in 2016 at the Rio Olympics. In 2021 Griner was named to the United States Women's National Team for the 2020 Olympics where she won her second gold medal. Griner married Cherelle Watson in 2019 who changed her name to Cherelle Griner.
