Tom welcomes back Lyn Alden, Founder of Lyn Alden Investment Strategy, to the show to discuss the intricacies of trade deficits, the role of the US dollar as a global reserve currency, and the broader economic implications for the United States. Lyn explains that a trade deficit occurs when a country imports more than it exports, and while some countries experience this cyclically, others, like India, have managed structural deficits by investing in long-term growth rather than overconsumption. The US, however, faces a unique challenge: its trade deficit is deeply tied to its status as the world's reserve currency, which creates an excess demand for dollars and makes it difficult to manufacture competitively. Lyn highlights that the dollar's strength perpetuates this cycle, making imports expensive and exports cheaper, while also forcing the US to rely on foreign investment to fund its deficits. This dynamic has contributed to deindustrialization and a shift in economic power globally. She contrasts this with historical examples like the UK during the Bretton Woods era, where a similar situation led to stagnation before the rise of new powers like the US. The discussion shifts to fiscal dominance, where large government deficits constrain monetary policy, making central banks more reliant on fiscal authorities. Lyn notes that the Fed is increasingly limited in its ability to control inflation due to these fiscal pressures. She also addresses Trump's tariff policies, arguing they harm domestic industries and shift costs onto American consumers while failing to address the root causes of trade imbalances. Inflationary pressures from tariffs are uneven, with specific sectors facing price increases while others experience disinflation. Lyn emphasizes that sustained inflation requires broader money supply growth, which has not been a significant factor in recent years. She concludes by exploring alternatives like gold and Bitcoin as potential reserve assets, suggesting that diversification into neutral reserves could help mitigate risks but remains largely theoretical at this stage. On this week's Stansberry Investor Hour, Dan and Corey welcome Lyn Alden to the show. Lyn is an independent analyst, bestselling author, and founder of Lyn Alden Investment Strategy – an investment research service for both retail and institutional investors. She kicks the podcast off by describing how her background in engineering has influenced her macroeconomic investing style. She explains why she became so interested in macroeconomics in the first place and why 2017 was a turning point for the U.S. economy. Lyn also talks about fiscal dominance – or when fiscal deficits and federal debts are large enough that they start reducing a central bank's options. She puts this in the historical context of the 1970s and clarifies why inflation and interest rates are so complexly intertwined today. (4:39) Next, Lyn shares her outlook for the U.S. economy, including higher-than-baseline inflation for the foreseeable future and the country being in a similar situation to emerging markets. She discusses areas of the market where fiscal dominance has been appearing over the past few years, how the 2010s taught investors the wrong lesson, why the U.S. may experience the same economic troubles that Japan is facing right now, and the divergence between sectors going through recessions versus those that benefit from deficits. (16:42) Lastly, Lyn cautions listeners against using the traditional 60/40 portfolio in inflationary environments like today's and instead urges them to prioritize energy, precious metals, and hard assets. She also breaks down why she finds Latin America so attractive today (particularly Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico) and gives an in-depth explanation of how technology impacts money. (34:03) Dan and Corey close things out by discussing the backlash to Argentine President Javier Milei's economic shake-up, including his devaluing the peso against the U.S. dollar and laying off thousands of government workers. Plus, they share their thoughts on the latest speculative meme craze – closed-end fund Destiny Tech100 (DXYZ) – and what it means for the broader market. (54:28)

Tom welcomes back Lyn Alden, Founder of Lyn Alden Investment Strategy, to the show. Lyn discusses abundant and scarce things in investing, focusing on the era of fiscal dominance that has led to bonds becoming abundant. This is due to large budget deficits and private debt being transferred to the public sector. The implications include higher average fiscal-driven inflation and potential impact on asset prices and tax receipts. The Federal Reserve's ability to perfectly tune the economy to avoid recession for the next decade is questioned. In emerging markets, stocks may rise in local currency but decrease in hard money terms during recessions. The U.S., however, is experiencing fiscal dominance where public debt exceeds GDP, making it harder to fight inflation and slow down borrowing. While interest rates can help make a country's currency attractive or reduce borrowing demand, raising interest rates results in ballooning expenses, offsetting disinflationary forces. The commercial real estate sector is heavily impacted, but travel companies, seniors, and wealthy individuals may benefit from higher interest rates. Lyn discusses the SVB bank crisis in 2023, suggesting that the Fed might prioritize saving banks or the Treasury market over controlling inflation, limiting monetary policy flexibility. The potential outcomes of interest rate cuts include growth and demand for commodities but less effectiveness due to fiscal dominance. She emphasizes energy exposure as a hedge against inflationary pressures. Investment strategies include owning assets related to dense forms of energy in the energy sector, focusing on demographics, aging workforces, and understanding China's labor supply and demand. Alternative investment portfolios like the permanent portfolio and IV portfolio deviate from the traditional 60-40 stock-bond split by including gold and commodities for diversification. The development of Bitcoin ETFs is seen as inevitable due to its size and liquidity, but risks include hacks and confiscations. Developed countries generally accept Bitcoin as a store of value while regulating its use as a medium of exchange. The importance of building tools to make Bitcoin more efficient for users is emphasized. Lyn's book, "Broken Money," discusses global financial system issues, with countries relying on the US dollar facing negative consequences if it devalues or if the US manipulates currencies. Running large structural trade deficits is necessary but comes with negative effects such as decreased export competitiveness and de-industrialization. The shift towards more neutral assets like gold and Bitcoin in response to unreliable US dollars is emphasized, along with considering multiple variables and being data-dependent. On this episode, Nate is joined by investment strategist Lyn Alden to discuss how energy and technology have shaped our monetary system and current financial trends. While more people are becoming aware of energy's foundational role in our global systems, it is still widely overlooked, especially among those working in finance. In contrast, Lyn's biophysically rooted analysis of macroeconomic patterns expose the cyclical dysfunction of the world's economy. How has increasing energy availability and productivity offset the inflationary nature of fiat currencies - and what happens if this trend were to slow or reverse? What assumptions and biases have led most analysts to mis-read long term trends, leaving us with vulnerable economies? Is it possible to rejigger our systems and innovate more biophysically aligned tools to enable a smoother transition into a future with a lower energy throughput? About Lyn Alden: Lyn Alden is an independent analyst and founder of Lyn Alden Investment Strategy with a background in engineering management. Her work provides institutional-level research in plain English, so that both institutional investors and retail investors can benefit from it. Lyn also serves as an independent director on the board of Swan.com and as a general partner at the venture capital firm Ego Death Capital. She is the author of the 2023 best-selling book Broken Money about the past, present, and future of money through the lens of technology. Lyn has a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and a master's degree in engineering management, with a focus on engineering economics, systems engineering, and financial modeling. "I think the Left probably has a bigger disconnect on money than we see elsewhere." My guest today is Lyn Alden. Lyn is a macroeconomist, author, and founder of Lyn Alden Investment Strategy. Far from a niche libertarian curiosity, Lyn compellingly frames bitcoin as aligning with progressive values of financial inclusion, human rights, environmental sustainability and transparency. By tracing the evolution of monetary systems, she builds a thoughtful bipartisan case for why progressives should reconsider biases against this new form of "hard money." In this conversation we discuss her new book Broken Money, which I think is one of the best books for low and working class people that exposes our current broken money and global financial system which benefits wealthy elite at the expense of every day people. We analyze global financial systems, the need for financial inclusion, Bitcoin's opt-out properties, and how Bitcoin transcends traditional partisan divisions. Lyn makes a compelling yet nonpartisan case for why those on the left concerned with human rights, the environment, and social equity should take a fresh look at Bitcoin's possibilities. My hope is that this conversation will help folks from the left gain a better understanding of money, our global financial system, and yearn to learn more by reading Lyn's book and other resources about how we can actually help people the way our values and social programs desire to. Tom welcomes back Lyn Alden, Founder of Lyn Alden Investment Strategy, to the show to discuss the markets, the Fed, and the concept of fiscal dominance. Lyn explains that the unusual phenomenon of budget deficits widening despite low unemployment since 2016-2017 is largely due to demographics, leading to the concept of fiscal dominance where large deficits and high public debts can override monetary policy. She also talks about the two causes of inflation and the different tools used to combat them, such as fixing supply side bottlenecks, addressing what is causing the elevated rate of money supply growth, and looking at the long-term growth rate of truly scarce goods and services. She discusses the different ways in which the injection of a trillion dollars into the economy would affect price and asset inflation. Lyn explains that if the money is given to the top 100 wealthiest people, the effect will likely be asset price inflation, whereas if it is distributed to the bottom 50% of society, there will be more consumer price inflation. The two also discuss the challenge of increasing GDP and productivity without affecting the CPI, and Lyn suggests investing in scarce assets such as gold, Bitcoin, and high-value properties. Lyn then explains the current Federal Reserve policy of quantitative tightening, and how it has delayed a recession. She compares the US to Australia and Canada, explaining how in the US most consumer debt is fixed rate, and in Australia and Canada it is more variable rate. Lastly, she talks about the idea of reshoring manufacturing to the U.S. and how this could drive inflation, and the implications of the peak of shale oil production in the US, and how this could affect any manufacturing reshoring effort. Lyn also talks about her forthcoming book, "Broken Money," which covers the development of money, the current financial system, and the pros and cons of various types of money. She believes that Bitcoin is a good investment for the next two years, due to the tight supply-side dynamics and economic re-acceleration that may take place. Ultimately, she emphasizes the importance of remaining flexible and humble in the face of complex markets. For some time now it has been the belief of many Fed-watchers that the Federal Reserve would continue to hike interest rates until it “breaks something.” Lyn Alden of Lyn Alden Investment Strategy returns to Forward Guidance to argue that the stunning collapse of two large U.S. banks represents such breakage. Alden tells Jack Farley that this damage will soon give way to a period of low real interest rates, where inflation runs above Treasury yields. Lyn Alden of Lyn Alden Investment Strategy returns to Forward Guidance to give a much-needed update on her macro views as equity and crypto markets encounter intense selling pressure. Alden argues that stubbornly high inflation will cause rotation from growth stocks to value stocks to continue. However, Alden argues that she's more likely to buy than short beleaguered hypergrowth names (think $ARKK) - instead she sees the greatest weakness in the mega-cap “FAANG” names, which she compares to the “Nifty Fifty” stocks, a basket of blue-chip equities that seemed impregnable in the 1960s but ultimately fared poorly in the later inflationary decade of the 1970s. But it's not the 1970s, where interest rates rose to meet inflation, that reminds Alden the most of our current era; instead it is the 1940s, where policies such as yield curve control ensured that bond yields remained well below levels of inflation. Alden argues that in this environment of sustained negative real interest rates, commodities will perform very well, and in particular commodities of fixed supply like gold and Bitcoin. These episodes will air on Tuesday and Friday. Today's show is with Lyn Alden of Lyn Alden Investment Strategy. Debate: Crypto vs The Environment It is estimated that the global Bitcoin network currently consumes about 133 terawatt-hours of electricity annually - roughly equal to what is consumed by the nation of Sweden. Crypto skeptics warn that the energy demands of the network are a threat to the environment and that further adoption of cryptocurrency will lead to a harmful rise in carbon emissions. However, crypto advocates say that the figures often used to denounce crypto can be misleading and when you examine the biggest contributing factors to climate change globally, Bitcoin is responsible for just 0.13% of annual carbon emissions. Furthermore, unlike the traditional financial system, they say, networks like Bitcoin continue to make strides in adopting renewable energy with initiatives like the Crypto Climate Accord committing producers to net-zero by 2040. Location: RemotelyDate: Friday 26th, MarchCompany: lynalden.comRole: MacroeconomistThis month we have seen the markets signal an expected increase in inflation; while bond prices are a good indicator, Lyn Alden explains that just looking at bonds or the Consumer Price Index (CPI) does not tell the whole story. Price changes can vary wildly in services, commodities, and especially asset prices, but inflation affects different people in different ways.Outside of inflation, Bitcoiners have been looking closely at the Grayscale Trust (GBTC) recently and specifically the premium. I asked Lyn why people would pay less (or more) than the market price of Bitcoin for shares of GBTC. There are several reasons that GBTC is down recently, one of which is the potential approval of a Bitcoin ETF. Canada recently approved a Bitcoin ETF, with significant demand. An ETF in the United States is still being held up by regulators, despite increasing applications from institutions like Fidelity. But the rumour is one is right around the corner, and it would likely have significantly more demand than Canada's. In this interview, I talk to Lyn Alden, a macroeconomist and Lyn Alden Investment Strategy founder. We discuss bond yields, the effects of the rising inflation rate, the GBTC premium, and potential Bitcoin ETFs.

SBTV spoke with Lyn Alden, founder of Lyn Alden Investment Strategy, about how the monetary policy response from policymakers is repeating history. The 2010s look a lot like the deflationary 1930s during the aftermath of the Great Depression while the 2020s could mirror the 1940s marked by World War II.
Lyn Alden of Lyn Alden Investment Strategy is our guest on Raise Your Average. Lyn is one of today's foremost and profound macro-economic strategists and thinkers. She provides tens of thousands of investors per month with her proprietary investment research. Lyn's investing framework primarily involves fundamental equity investing with a global macro overlay, and while her research is meticulous, multi-layered, and inter-connected in it's findings, one of Lyn Alden's gifts is her ability to appeal to a wide range of investors, from beginners all the way up to market intellectuals. Our discussion is wide ranging. Lyn describes how she ended up in the investment research arena (she's an engineer), what her interests are, how she's constructed her research framework, what she's looking for in her research, how she identifies bottlenecks and roadblocks, and how she's investing. We get into the subject of the economy, interest rates, yields, and inflation expectations, Lyn leads the discussion on how the base effects of April-May 2020, when the economy and consumption troughed, is temporarily distorting investors' view on economic growth. In addition to her equity and macroeconomic research, Lyn has also conducted in-depth research into Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies, and we get into that in some detail too here. There's so much here. Lyn Alden is the founder of Lyn Alden Investment Strategy where she provides investors with research, information, and tools to help them build wealth. Initially, there were concerns around Bitcoin that made it too risky to feel confident in. Over a few years, concerns over potential competitors and vulnerabilities were addressed, greatly de-risking the asset. To cap a strong 2-3 year run, 2020 presented an ideal environment for Bitcoin to make a big jump. "2020 was the perfect storm for Bitcoin… The macro-environment couldn't be more attractive. We saw broad money supply increase 25% year-over-year." Bitcoin follows Metcalfe's Law which means that as the number of users increases, the cryptocurrency's value grows exponentially- this is often known as the network effect. In addition, due to the verification process, Bitcoin becomes more secure as the price goes up. ————————————————————————— To learn more about this episode, including podcast transcripts and show notes, visit *salt.org/talks* ( http://salt.org/talks ) Moderated by Anthony Scaramucci.

Location: Remotely Date: Friday 18th December Company: lynalden.com Role: Macroeconomist 2020 has been a year unlike any, even before the coronavirus pandemic, the global economy was showing signs of stress. With the outbreak, the spread of the virus and subsequent lockdowns, governments worldwide resorted to unprecedented levels of monetary and fiscal stimulus to keep the flailing economy afloat. With the record levels of money printing and the ballooning money supply, many earmarked 2020 as the year that Bitcoin could prove itself. In the last few days, Bitcoin has hit all-time highs of around $24,000, but unlike 2017, it is not just retail investors that have flocked to Bitcoin. MicroStrategy has paved the way for institutional investors to own Bitcoin by not only converting $450m of their treasury to Bitcoin but raising an additional $650m by way of a convertible senior note sale to buy more Bitcoin. MicroStrategy, legendary macro investors Paul Tudor Jones and Stanley Druckenmiller have taken positions in Bitcoin, signalling a new era of Bitcoin investors. In this interview, I am joined by Lyn Alden, a macroeconomist and founder of Lyn Alden Investment Strategy. We discuss the coronavirus pandemic's impact, the increase in the broad money supply, high inflation and institutional investment in Bitcoin.

Location: Squadcast Date: Monday 21st September Company: lynalden.com Role: Macroeconomist When COVID-19 struck, governments across the world implemented unprecedented stimulus packages to help what were already fragile economies, which had never fully recovered from the 2008 global financial crisis. While the economy moves in short-term 5-10 year cycles, a larger multi-decade cycle appears to be coming to an end. As governments pursue further rounds of quantitive easing, debt to GDP levels are heading towards what Lyn calls the event horizon, where debt to GDP is over 130% and currency devaluation is the most likely outcome. Holding cash through a currency devaluation risks losing purchasing power as governments increase the money supply to service debt, thus scarce assets such as gold and Bitcoin are a safe haven. In this interview, I talk to Lyn Alden, a macroeconomist and founder of Lyn Alden Investment Strategy. We discuss the current state of the economy, monetary and fiscal policy debt cycles and if we should expect currency devaluation.
