This dish magically transforms kūmara from side dish to star performer, and I can't get enough of it. Serves 2-4 Ingredients 2 orange kūmara, halved, skin on 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon pomegranate molasses 1 teaspoon smoked paprika ½ teaspoon sea salt 4 tablespoons pumpkin seeds Small handful of mint & coriander ½ cup fresh pomegranate arils/seeds Yoghurt Dressing ½ cup Greek yoghurt 1 tablespoon tahini 1 tablespoon pomegranate molasses ½ teaspoon sea salt Method Heat oven to 180C. Line a tray with baking paper. Mix oil with pomegranate molasses and paprika and rub/brush all over the kūmara. Lay out on the prepared tray, sprinkle with salt and roast for 45 minutes or until soft and cooked through. Toss in the pumpkin seeds in the final 5-10 minutes and they will toast and puff up. To make the yoghurt dressing, whisk yoghurt with tahini, pomegranate molasses, and salts until combined. Serve the warm kūmara drizzled with yoghurt dressing and scattered with mint, toasted pumpkin seeds, and pomegranate seeds. Nici's note: Use pumpkin or cauliflower in place of kūmara if you like. Growing Pomegranates is not a very popular gardening subject in New Zealand, yet, once you get into it you might be surprised what the shrub looks like and how the fruits taste when fully grown and mature. Punica granatum is the one with red flowers that hails from the Mediterrané and Tropical and Sub-Tropical regions. The Socotran Pomegranate hails from the Socotra Island (Yemen) and has pink flowers but less sweet fruit when it ripens. My research tells me they grow well in warm regions, but I saw them growing well in Canterbury too, as long as the frosts aren't too extreme. Plant in winter… Generally speaking, plant in a sunny spot (regular sun-light for most of the day) with a large area of well drained fertile soil of good depth (50 cm deep is a good start). Regular watering (not over-watering!) is appreciated and will allow the plant to move upwards. Citrus fertiliser (with a decent amount of Potash in the N-P-K ration) is a great boost from springtime till autumn. Every two weeks or so will help the plant nicely. From spring till autumn the flowers, followed by developing fruit, will absorb the food. There are dwarf varieties (“Nana”) that are suitable to plant in large pots – they can grow to a meter long. Often it takes three years for a plant to become habitual growers of bright-red flowers, followed by the red fruit. In some warm conditions (Northland, Auckland, coastal Hawke's Bay, etc) the Pomegranates might take two (sometimes three) years to start delivering the fruit. In summer, the flowers fade a bit towards an orangey look – pollinating insects will by then have done their job. Fruit will develop in autumn or slightly later. A regular but light pruning after harvest will keep the plant in great condition for development in springtime. Sometimes the plants show growth of “suckers” popping up beside the main trunk – when the plant is grafted, these suckers can also develop below the graft. Suckers are exactly what their name suggests, “useless suckers” that won't develop any flowers and subsequent fruit for the future – get rid of them! When the plant gets into the ripening phase, some sap-sucking invertebrates can do some damage: MealyBugs, Aphids, whitefly, and scale insects. Grab a Neem Oil or Conqueror Oil and smack them every fortnight. Enjoy this fruit! Yes, it can be a bit messy, but hey! Try it out! LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of Book Talk for BookTok, we sit down with T.C. Kraven, author of Of Prophecies and Pomegranates, a dark mythological retelling that grapples honestly with one of the most contested stories in Greek mythology: Hades and Persephone. Together, we explore how Kraven approached retelling a myth that has been romanticized, sanitized, and rewritten countless times. We discuss what it means to engage with the original mythos, including the complicated history behind the so-called “Rape of Persephone,” and how linguistic nuance, power, and consent shaped her interpretation of Persephone's story. This conversation also dives into one of the novel's central thematic threads: self-deception. From Demeter's possessive motherhood, to Helios's obsession, to Hades's self-punishment, we unpack how characters lie to themselves in the name of love, protection, and control. We pay special attention to Kraven's striking portrayal of Demeter as an abusive parent and why that interpretation felt both mythologically grounded and narratively necessary. We also talk about Narcissus, whose arc moves beyond vanity into something far more human and tragic, and why his emotional depth matters to the story as a whole. Finally, for aspiring writers, Kraven shares candid insight into her journey through self-publishing and her transition into traditional publishing, offering thoughtful advice for authors navigating both paths. This episode is a must-listen for readers interested in mythological retellings, feminist reinterpretations of Greek myths, and stories that refuse to look away from uncomfortable truths. ANGELA'S SYMPOSIUM 📖 Academic Study on Witchcraft, Paganism, esotericism, magick and the Occult
We examine the critical exchange between Ben Whitmore's Trials of the Moon and Ronald Hutton's responses to it, using the debate as a lens through which to explore contemporary tensions in the historiography of witchcraft and Pagan origins. Whitmore, writing from within the Pagan community, accuses Hutton of adopting an overly sceptical methodology and of applying uneven evidentiary standards that, in his view, systematically downplay the possibility of ritual continuities in European folk culture. Hutton's rejoinders foreground the demands of historical method, emphasising the importance of verifiable documentation over conjectural survivalism and defending the historian's obligation to distinguish cultural revival from demonstrable lineage. We will assess which of Whitmore's critiques raise legitimate questions about interpretive frameworks and where his reasoning departs from accepted scholarly practice. It also considers how this debate reflects wider issues around authority, tradition, and the negotiation of identity within modern Paganism, and how different communities assign meaning to the fragmentary traces of the past.CONNECT & SUPPORT

This slow-cooked lamb dish is a festive treat and it's super simple to make spectacular with a final flourish of pomegranate jewels and fresh herbs that make the whole thing feel properly celebratory. Ingredients 1 butterflied leg of lamb (1.6–2kg) 3–4 garlic cloves, slivered Zest and juice of 1 orange 2 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp runny honey 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 1 tsp each ground cumin, ground coriander, smoked paprika 1 tsp flaky sea salt Freshly ground black pepper 2 sprigs rosemary, finely chopped 1 cup chicken or vegetable stock ½ cup white wine (optional) To finish: Pomegranate seeds, mint leaves, flat-leaf parsley, extra orange zest Method Start by laying the lamb out flat and making small slits across the flesh so you can slip in those slivers of garlic. It's a tiny bit of extra effort but the flavour reward is enormous. In a small bowl whisk together the orange zest and juice, olive oil, honey, mustard, spices, salt, pepper and rosemary. Pour this over the lamb and give it a good massage so every little nook gets coated. If you've time to marinate it for a few hours or even overnight, do — the flavours deepen beautifully. When you're ready to cook, heat your oven to 170°C. Nestle the lamb into a roasting dish and pour any leftover marinade over the top. Add the stock and wine around the meat, then seal the whole dish tightly with foil. This is the trick to keeping the lamb meltingly tender. Slide it into the oven and leave it to slowly braise for about 2½ hours, checking halfway to make sure there's still a little liquid in the base. Once the lamb is lovely and soft, remove the foil and drain off some of the juices for a gravy. Increase the oven temperature to 200°C. Return the dish to the oven for 15 minutes so the edges caramelise and the top gets all sticky and gorgeous. Let the lamb rest for a good 15-20 minutes on a board or plate before slicing or pulling it into big, rustic chunks — it will be fall-apart tender. Pour the reserved pan juices back into the roasting dish. Mix 1 heaped tbsp of flour with some 2 tsps. soft butter to form a paste and add this to the roasting dish. Stir and simmer until it thickens a little for a gravy. To serve, pile it onto a platter and scatter over pomegranate seeds, mint, parsley and a final grating of orange zest. Serve gravy on the side. The colours are pure Christmas and the flavour is sunshine on a plate. Pair it with simple greens or a herby summer salad. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Is your body running on broken engines? We often obsess over what we eat, but we rarely think about how our cells process that fuel. If your mitochondria (the engines of your cells) are dysfunctional, it doesn't matter how perfect your diet is—you will feel tired, you will recover slowly, and you will age faster. In this episode, we sit down with Brad Currier, a PhD in muscle physiology and scientist at Timeline, to discuss Urolithin A—the breakthrough molecule that acts as a "recycling program" for your cells. Brad reveals why natural food sources are virtually impossible to rely on (you'd need to drink 1.5 liters of juice daily), how this molecule compares to fasting for longevity, and the shocking data coming out of studies with Olympic athletes. In this episode, you will learn:The "Junkyard" Theory: Why mitochondrial dysfunction is the root cause of low energy and poor recovery.Mitophagy Explained: How to trigger the selective breakdown of "zombie" mitochondria to build fresh, healthy ones. The Pomegranate Reality Check: Why you can't eat your way to therapeutic levels of Urolithin A (and the sugar cost of trying).Fasting vs. MitoPure: The difference between "global" starvation (fasting) and "surgical" cellular repair.Olympic Secrets: How elite runners are using this specific protocol to lower perceived exertion and muscle damage. The Future of Longevity: How this impacts not just muscle, but skin, immune health, and cognitive function.Timeline Mitopure Gummies: GET 20% Off Now!

Seattle's Fast Fashion (https://themasonryseattle.com/fast-fashion/) has built a reputation for modern, forward-looking IPAs and hop-focused lagers, and the characterful brewery and taproom in SoDo expresses the eclectic interests and aesthetic taste of founder Matt Storm. It's a funhouse of sorts—a bit like drinking in a thrift store full of budget mid-century furniture, stocked with kitsch that spans the past six decades. It's busy and not necessarily thematically consistent—much like the beers the brewery makes—but it's different and unique. You will not confuse it with another brewery. Over the past half-decade, the beer itself has developed from quick hits of new hazy IPAs filled with the coolest names in hops, to a more diverse lineup of IPAs and lagers—still hop forward and immaculately crafted. Under head brewer Stefano Annicharico, they've found a way to make beer that keeps the baseball game-day crowd happy, while also continuing to explore the possibilities in contemporary beer styles. In this episode, Storm and Annichiarico discuss: how Anchovy hops came to have such a unique name brewing drinkable, semi-dry hazy IPA with heavy adjunct loads building acidity in the mash to promote drinkability despite later dry-hop additions that raise the pH boiling hops in hazy IPA with 20-minute additions for more longevity in package lowering whirlpool hop amounts and pushing higher loads in post-fermentation dry hops finding bits of distinct character in hops such as Nelson Sauvin, Motueka, and NZ Cascade (aka Taiheke) avoiding excessive rousing to limit hop burn using New Zealand hops in modern hoppy lager And more. Ben Howe's brewing career reads more like that of a chef than a typical brewer—stints in Denmark, brewing jobs on both the East and West coasts, weeks spent interning at breweries that intrigued him—but one fateful visit to the Zehender brewery in Monchsambach opened his eyes to Franconian lager and inspired a nearly decade-long quest to understand the beer and its mechanisms of flavor. More recently at Otherlands (https://www.otherlandsbeer.com), he's pushed boundaries of accepted brewing dogma, mashing with pH levels far past any sensible range in an effort to build color and flavor—and the things that shouldn't work still obviously do work. In this episode, Howe discusses both his traditional methods and modern concessions, including: learning from Will Meyers and Megan Parisi at Cambridge Brewing capturing Franconian-ness in long-boiled lager beers old-style vs. new-style German lager brewing kräusening to carbonate rather than spunding before terminal never raising the temperature for a diacetyl rest while using ALDC to control precursors finding color with only pilsner malt hardening water for lager brewing with calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, and gypsum mashing above 5.8 pH maintaining atmospheric pressure for yeast during fermentation boiling large amounts of low-alpha hops for a long time to build flavor and texture And more. Join Michael Lane in the studio as he guides us through the fascinating story of the Ivory Pomegranate—a tiny artifact with a big mystery. First published in Revue Biblique in 1981 and later brought to light in Biblical Archaeology Review, this small relic bears the divine name of YHWH. In our final Pulp Month outing before we return for duty back at the IP slop mines, we watched the Warren Beatty vanity/autistic-passion project Dick Tracy, yet another attempt by Disney to play catch up to Warner Bros. and Batman. A nearly $50 million black tank-top movie shot by the DP of The Bird with the Crystal Plumage where Al Pacino in heavy prosthetics eats out the scenery and Madonna blasts nip. And in our most brain damaged discussion since The Book of Henry, we delve into Beatty's attempts to hold onto the Dick Tracy rights with Dick Tracy Special and Dick Tracy Special: Tracy Zooms In. For many artists, an art career takes many twists and turns—an adventure shaped by different mediums, jobs, and ways of sustaining creative work while at the same time, educating oneself with the histories of your chosen path. On this episode of The Unfinished Print: A Mokuhanga Podcast, I speak with printmaker Charles Spitzack. We talk about his discovery of mokuhanga and how it connects to his broader printmaking practice. Charles shares his early experiences making mokuhanga, his teaching methods, and how his understanding of the medium developed through a Western American perspective. He also speaks about his time at the Mokuhanga Project Space, and his thoughts on the differences between oil-based and water-based mokuhanga. Please follow The Unfinished Print: A Mokuhanga Podcast and my own mokuhanga work on Instagram @andrezadoroznyprints or email me theunfinishedprint@gmail.com Notes: may contain a hyperlink. Simply click on the highlighted word or phrase. Artists works follow after the note if available. Pieces are mokuhanga unless otherwise noted. Dimensions are given if known. Print publishers are given if known. Charles Spitzack - website, Instagram Seattle Print Arts - is a printmaking association based in Seattle, Washington, United States. It maintains a membership and is dedicated to the exchange of knowledge related to various printmaking practices. More info can be found, here. It is dedicated to increasing the understanding of printmaking and operates a co-op, gallery, and educational programs. More info can be found, here. Cornish College of the Arts - is an independent art college located in Seattle, Washington, United States. Its programs emphasize experimentation and critical thinking. More info can be found, here. Mokuhanga (木版画) - is a Japanese word meaning "wood" and "print." Traditionally, it refers to a relief printing method using woodblocks, water, natural handmade papers, and water-based pigments. With the rise of the sōsaku hanga (creative print) movement in the early to mid 20th century, mokuhanga expanded to include works made with Western oil pigments as well. Today, mokuhanga can be difficult to define, as many artists experiment with new approaches while others remain dedicated to traditional water-based methods. This balance between innovation and tradition shows that mokuhanga is limitless, continually evolving while still grounded in its past. sōsaku-hanga - or creative prints, is a style of printmaking which is predominantly, although not exclusively, prints made by one person. It started in the early twentieth century in Japan, in the same period as the shin-hanga movement. The artist designs, carves, and prints their own works. The designs, especially in the early days, may seem rudimentary but the creation of self-made prints was a breakthrough for printmakers moving away from where only a select group of carvers, printers and publishers created woodblock prints. Stephen Hazel (1934-20120 - was a painter and printmaker based in the Pacific Northwest. He created works on paper, and educated upon the subject. More info can be found, here. Beautiful Display 10: Beauties of Chinatown (1977) 24" x 17 11/16" Katheleen Rabel - is an American printmaker, painter and sculptor. More info can be found, here. Penedo Alto (sōsaku hanga) 50″ x 39″ Hideo Hagiwara (1913-2007) - was a mokuhanga printmaker who came of age during the sōsaku hanga period of the mid 20th Century in Japan. He studied printmaking with Un'ichi Hiratsuka (1896-1997). Hagiwara made prints that were expressive of the self and abstract. He taught at Oregon State University in 1967. Lady No. 6 (1975) 24.75" x 18.25" kentō - is the registration system used by printmakers in order to line up the colour woodblocks with your key block, or outline block, carved first. floating kentō - is like the traditional kentō registration technique but is carved on an "L" shaped piece of wood, and not onto the wood block. monotype print - is a unique print created from an image painted or drawn on a smooth surface, such as glass or metal, and then transferred to paper. Unlike most printmaking methods, where multiple copies of the same image can be produced, a monotype typically has a single, one-of-a-kind image. It's called a "mono" type because it is not part of an edition like traditional prints (e.g., lithographs, etchings), where you can make multiple copies. Mike Lyon - is an American artist. His medium has varied throughout his career such as "square tiles," or "pixels," through to making mokuhanga, monoprinting, and machine-assisted etching, drawing and mezzotint. Mike Lyon also has a large woodblock print collection which he has curated for the public, here. More information about his work can be found, here. Grass 4 (2010) 77" x 22" Naoko Matsubara - is a Japanese/Canadian contemporary artist, and sculptor, who lives and works in Oakville, Ontario, Canada. Conducting (2004) 22.05" × 15.59" Katsutoshi Yuasa - is a Japanese contemporary artist, and sculptor, who works predominantly in mokuhanga. He has produced an incredible mount of work. He cerated coloured woodcuts and was an educator and author. Frasconi's themes could be political in nature. More info can be found, here. Cows (1955) 7 1/2" x 12 15/16" The Arts and Crafts Movement in America - flourished from the late 19th to early 20th century, emphasizing simplicity of design, and the use of natural materials as a response to industrial mass production. Inspired by the ideals of John Ruskin (1819-1900) and William Morris (1834-1896) in Britain, the movement in the United States was closely tied to architecture, furniture making, and decorative arts, promoting honesty and a functional beauty. There was a link with social reform, criticizing modernity and industry and fostering communities of makers across the country. In Japan this folk movement was explored in the mingei movement of the early 20th Century. William S. Rice (1873-1963) - was a painter, educator and woodblock artist from the United States. What if Prince Arthur, Henry VIII's elder brother, had survived? In this special interview, I sit down with novelist Leah Toole to talk about her fascinating book "The Rose and The Pomegranate" — an alternative history novel that asks one of Tudor history's biggest “what ifs.” In Leah's world, Arthur Tudor doesn't die in 1502 — and the ripple effects are enormous. Katherine of Aragon's destiny changes, Henry VIII's life takes a very different course, and familiar figures like the Boleyns, Wolsey, and Cromwell walk entirely new paths. In this conversation we explore: - Why Arthur Tudor and this “what if”? - How Leah balanced historical accuracy with imagination. - Arthur and Katherine's marriage — and how it might have unfolded. - A reimagined Henry VIII without the six wives we know so well. - Which events Leah chose to keep… and which to reshape. - How a single turning point could have reshaped England, Europe, and the Church. It's a thoughtful, imaginative, and meticulously researched take on Tudor history that fans won't want to miss! Portland, Oregon's proximity to hop country gives its brewers an enviable perspective on hop flavors, aromas, evolving technologies, and seasonal expressions, and the brewers at Ruse (https://www.rusebrewing.com) don't take that for granted. When developing recipes, cofounder Shaun Kalis loves pushing the envelope to find additional intensity using the latest flowable hop products, but he also finds punch and flavor density in previous generations of products, used judiciously in combination with hops in other formats. Through this episode, Kalis discusses: using flaked wheat and flaked rice to lower FAN and increase the snap early pick Columbus for bittering and a healthy dose of CO2 extracted Mosaic or Simcoe with T-90's for long-lasting hop flavor selecting different expressions within the same hop variety for layering character in IPA lifting up hop flavors by boosting underlying dankness adjusting pH while brewing fresh hop beers hot side hopping for more impactful and long-lasting flavor applying new ideas to hazy IPA And more. Over the past two years, five beers that Lapel, Indiana's Pax Verum (https://www.paxverum.com) sent to Craft Beer & Brewing Magazine for review have scored 95 or above. That naturally piqued our interest, so when we planned our Craft Brewers Conference itinerary we made sure to visit the hip outpost an hour north of Indianapolis. Head brewer and co-owner Colt Carpenter cut his teeth working in a homebrew shop before making the jump to the world of professional brewing, and his embrace of high quality and diverse ingredients tracks with that experience of assisting home brewers with their own ingredient choices. Now, he embraces everything from traditional English styles and European lagers to cutting-edge IPAs, but always with a slight contemporary edge. In this episode, Carpenter discusses: building a wider understanding of and familiarity with beer ingredients by working at a homebrew shop sourcing ingredients intentionally with flavor in mind designing robust porter around a specific specialty malt managing challenges with craft malt like increased friability and seasonal variation focusing on freshness while managing color swings with specialty malts avoiding over-oxygenation cool pooling IPAs with flowable hop products building depth in hoppy beers without T-90 pellets finding hop lots that meet flavor goals, without selecting unique flavors and aromas from Michigan-grown varieties And more.
