This week on Autonomy Markets, Grayson Brulte and Walter Piecyk discuss Wayve's OEM partnership with Nissan, Nuro's Series E capital raise and why the Uber/Waymo partnership in Austin does not guarantee future deployments. Wayve is going to power Nissan's next-generation ProPILOT technology starting in fiscal year 2027. The deal with Nissan validates Wayve's business model of licensing and raises the question of is Nuro next in line to secure a major OEM partnership? As the autonomy economy evolves, licensing autonomous driving systems is going to accelerate fragmentation, potentially benefitting both Uber and Lyft. In Austin, Waymo is available exclusively through Uber. While early signs point to success, it's far from guaranteed that the partnership will scale beyond Austin and Atlanta, especially as Waymo continues to expand on it's own with Waymo One.Episode Chapters0:00 Wayve Partners with Nissan 3:12 Autonomous Driving OEM Partnerships 5:24 Nuro Series E7:12 Autonomous Driving Partnerships Ecosystem 13:01 Could Tesla xAI Swap Assets?17:19 Zoox Expands Testing to LA18:27 Will Zoox Launch Commercial Service in 2025?20:25 Waymo Needs More OEM Partnerships 23:40 U.S. / China Policy 28:00 Europe / China Policy 31:19 Uber / Waymo Austin Data 36:49 Unforced Error of The Week38:52 Next WeekRecorded on Friday, April 11, 2025--------About The Road to AutonomyThe Road to Autonomy® is a leading source of data, insight and commentary on autonomous vehicles/trucks and the emerging autonomy economy™.Autonomy is transforming industries and creating an entirely new economy that we call the autonomy economy™. The show opened with Tom running down a list of news items, including new information about the coming Kia K4 small/affordable EV, Moody's downgrade of Nissan's credit worthiness, and an update on slowing Tesla sales. Jill and Tom also corrected themselves on a pair of issues: Tom forgot that the current-generation Explorer is based on rear-wheel-drive architecture (episode 262), and Jill suggesting that the 2025 Nissan Altima is not available with the brand's ProPILOT semi-autonomous driver-assistance system (episode 263). Still in the first segment, Jill shared her review of the freshened Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV. Updates including improved range, and a new off-road themed trim level. In the Second segment, Jill and Tom are joined by Brad Parker of Dealnow.com. Brad shared a number of tips related to improving the value of your trade-in. In the last segment Jill is subjected to Tom's “Engine Parts” quiz. The hosts also discussed bad model names, as suggested by listeners. (Follow the Car Stuff Podcast on Facebook.)

A quick dive into Logos, the third leg of the persuasive rhetoric triangle from Aristotle (we previously covered Ethos marketing (listen here for credibility) and Pathos marketing (listen here for emotional appeal) in the last two episodes. Examples for Logos include a quick summary of Nissan's ProPilot car safety system ad and an Apple iPhone ad. Plus, I improvise a quick pitch with how I'd market this podcast to a new listener using the three rhetorical devices. Listen to see which strategy resonates with you as someone with so many options for your ears. And on that note, thank you for listening! I appreciate your ears and your time. NISSAN ARIYA REVEALED CCS PLUG LIQUID COOLED ⚡ 63kWh / 223 miles ⚡ 87kWh / 310 miles ⚡ Both FWD or AWD ⚡ 130kW+ charging ⚡ 22kW on-board charging Astonished face ⚡ 0-60mph 5.1secs (e-4orce version) ⚡ OTA Updates ⚡ From £40k/$40k. Arrives 2021 What do the British Press have to say? "The new Ariya features concept car looks and is massive technological leap over the Leaf, thanks to an all-new platform, which will be shared with Joint Venture partners, Renault and Mitsubishi. Unlike the Leaf which has effectively stood on its own, the Ariya uses a scalable platform optimised specifically for electric cars. Without the need to house an internal combustion engine, passenger space is elongated and the cockpit floor can be flat, with the batteries packed underneath." says car magazine: "The twin electric motor, all-wheel-drive Ariya models will feature Nissan’s most advanced all-wheel control technology, e-4orce. It has four-wheel drive and control. Nissan says the 0-62mph time ranges between 7.6 seconds (for the two-wheel drive Ariya 63kWh) and 5.1 seconds for the 87kWh Performance model. What about the US media? "The dashboard has a pleasingly minimalist design that incorporates two large 12.3-inch screens, one for the gauge cluster and another for the central infotainment display. A simple row of touch-capacitive climate-control buttons are nicely integrated into the wood trim of the dash. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functions are standard." says Car and Driver: "A more advanced version of Nissan's ProPilot driver-assistance system, called ProPilot 2.0, will be offered on the Ariya. It allows for hands-free driving in certain circumstances and can execute lane changes. Automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and other driver-assistance features are standard. The Ariya will go on sale in Japan first, sometime in the middle of next year. It will reach the U.S. later in 2021, with a starting price of around $40,000 that will likely reach closer to $50,000 when optioned up with the larger battery pack and all-wheel drive." And the Tech press, let's look to The Verge: "Despite being tech-forward as it comes, the Ariya lacks many of the idiosyncratic (and slightly ridiculous) flourishes that Nissan likes to stuff into its concept vehicles, like a virtual assistant that’s also a koi fish, or a fake engine noise that sounds like a musical version of THX’s Deep Note. Still, it’s an EV, so it has to have ultra-thin headlights a la EV startups like Byton and Faraday Future, and brake lights that stretch across the rear like Tesla’s Cybertruck. The car’s HVAC system can be accessed via a set of capacitive haptic switches that are integrated into the wood paneling underneath the center screen that offer a similar feeling to mechanical switches by vibrating when touched." The Pros and Cons from Push EVs Biggest pros Nissan has finally adopted CCS as its fast charging standard in North America and Europe. The optional 22 kW on-board also demonstrates that the automaker is starting to listen to its European customers. TMS (Thermal Management System) with active-cooling is finally here. Different combinations of motors and batteries Biggest cons Bad efficiency. Nissan is still far behind Korean automakers when it comes to efficiency. The Nissan Ariya is even less efficient than the recently introduced BMW iX3… If the Nissan Ariya had the same efficiency, the 87 kWh battery would be enough for 541 km (336 miles) in WLTP, instead of 500 km (311 miles). It’s at least a year away. This electric car will face really tough competition and its specs might not look good by then. https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/nissan/ariya/ https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a33311844/2022-nissan-ariya-ev-revealed/ https://www.theverge.com/2020/7/15/21324125/nissan-ariya-electric-suv-crossover-specs-price https://pushevs.com/2020/07/15/nissan-introduces-the-electric-crossover-ariya/ NISSAN TRANSITIONS TO CCS FOR US AND EUROPE "When the 2021 Nissan Ariya launches in the US and Europe next year, it will come equipped with a CCS (Combo) inlet, as the brand moves away from CHAdeMO in those markets. The Nissan LEAF and the Mitsubishi Outlander plug in hybrid are currently the only two EVs available in the US that use CHAdeMO, and the LEAF doesn't appear in Nissan's future plans." reports Tom Moloughney for InsideEVs: "When Nissan brought the LEAF to market back in late 2010, it was the first mass-produces electric vehicle, and the SAE hadn't established the Combined Charging System standard yet. In fact, it wasn't until June of 2013 when the first public CCS charging station was opened in Wolfsburg, Germany. Also, over the past few years as Japanese and South Korean automakers introduced their new electric offerings, one by one they came equipped with CCS inlets. Kia's first electric offering the Soul EV used the CHAdeMO standard. However, in 2019 when the 2nd generation Soul EV was introduced, it switched to CCS. Kia also uses CCS for the Niro EV. Honda's only all-electric offering, the Clarity also uses CCS, as does the Hyundai Kona Electric." "The eventual outcome of the war now seems plain, but the battles will drag on for a while. Nissan will continue to use CHAdeMO in Japan, where the standard dominates. Most new DC fast chargers in the US seem to be going in with both sets of connectors, though it’s unclear how long that trend will last." says ChargedEVs: "Moloughney also points out that the CHAdeMO Association recently introduced CHAdeMO 3.0, also known as Chaoji, which may become the new DC fast charging standard in China and/or Japan." https://insideevs.com/news/433929/nissan-switches-to-ccs-in-us-europe/amp/ https://chargedevs.com/newswire/the-war-is-over-nissan-to-switch-from-chademo-to-ccs-in-us-and-europe/ JAGUAR XJ ELECTRIC SEDAN DEBUT PUSHED TO LATE 2021 "Jaguar's been testing prototypes of the coming all-electric XJ sedan for a while now, an example we saw earlier this year testing in the cold having reached an advanced stage. The plan had been to launch the battery-powered flagship fastback this year, with sales to commence early 2021." says Autoblog: "A report in The Sunday Times says that plan has changed, Jaguar pushing the XJ back to the third quarter of next year while the automaker focuses on its finances and its most profitable models. The site FormaCar reports, "The presentation date on the official website now reads, 'October 2021,'" but we haven't found that XJ-specific page. In response to questions about the Jaguar canceling the XJ, a spokesperson responded, "Our engineers continue to work on the next-generation all-electric Jaguar XJ. We remain committed to our long-term strategy and our product portfolio remains the same, but the unprecedented situation will inevitably have an impact on our immediate plans."" https://www.autoblog.com/2020/07/15/jaguar-xj-electric-car-debut-delayed-coronavirus/ BIDEN PLANS MASSIVE ELECTRIC CAR PUSH "Details about Joe Biden’s environmental plans are beginning to emerge, and they include a massive push for electric cars and trucks. According to Car and Driver, part of the plan is a program that offers financial incentives for Americans to trade in their gas guzzlers and replace them with efficient electric vehicles, but here’s the kicker: The incentives will only apply to cars manufactured in the United States." repotrs Clean Technica: "Exactly what “manufactured in the United States” means is not clear at this time, but it will most definitely benefit Tesla, whose vehicles can boast some of the highest US content of any cars sold in America. It will also be a boon to Volkswagen, which is converting part of its Chattanooga factory to make cars based on the MEB platform. Hyundai and KIA, however, who make some very competitive electric cars, would be left out in the cold. Biden’s proposal includes money to install a half million electric car chargers all across America as well as financial assistance to help car makers convert their factories to electric vehicle production." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/07/15/biden-plans-massive-electric-car-push/ SKODA ENYAQ ELECTRIC SUV SPIED WEARING DECEPTIVE CAMOUFLAGE "while the Enyaq and VW ID.4 will share VW Group's MEB electric-only platform underpinnings, it'll feature distinct styling as it's the production version of the automaker's Vision iV concept the company revealed last year." says MOtor1: "Skoda is expected to offer two versions of the model – one with a single motor and one with two. The two-motor model could produce up to 302 horsepower (225 kilowatts). However, those looking for the most range will likely gravitate toward the single-motor model, which rumors suggest will offer 311 miles (500 kilometers) of range. Production for the Skoda Enyaq should start later this year. Sales and deliveries will likely begin in the first half of 2021. This will be one of at least 10 new electrified models Skoda plans to launch by the end of 2022 under its iV sub-brand." https://www.motor1.com/news/434153/skoda-enyaq-electric-spy-photos/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-news [mention for Premium Partners] You can listen to all 839 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Show #711 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 28th February 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Welcome to a new PATREON EXECUTIVE PRODUCER MICHAEL AND LUKE TURRELL Welcome to a new PATREON PRODUCER GILBERTO ROSADO TESLA MODEL 3 IS DECLARED UK CAR OF THE YEAR Tesla’s Model 3 has been crowned UK Car of the Year 2020, making it back-to-back wins for electric vehicles at the awards following the Jaguar I-PACE’s victory in 2019. After emerging triumphant as Best Executive car when the category winners were announced on 12th February, the Tesla battled it out against eight other new cars for the overall title. Three of these cars were EVs and the popularity of another one of the trio – the Kia e-Niro – ensured the closest-ever winning margin in the history of the UK Car of the Year Awards. The 29-strong panel of judges who deliberated the UK Car of the Year Awards was understandably quick to commend the efforts of Tesla. Top Gear’s Tom Ford said: “Clean, crisp and technological inside, the Model 3 drives and performs like we think EVs should. Makes others in the sector feel stuffy and awkward.” Auto Trader’s Rory Reid added the Tesla was “the most important car in a generation because it sets the standard for what electric cars should be: affordable, aspirational, fun and very cool”. Instead of being restricted to their own category in the Awards, EVs compete directly against internal combustion engined-vehicles. Three of the nine finalists from the nine vehicle segment categories were electric models and the panel gave their approval to the latest developments in technology, with 21 of the 29 votes going to battery-powered vehicles. The Kia e-Niro pushed the Model 3 all the way to finish just one point behind the Tesla, while the third of the EV trio – the Porsche Taycan – finished in joint third space. http://ukcoty.co.uk/uncategorized/tesla-model-3-wins-uk-car-of-the-year-2020/ CITROËN’S TINY, TWO-SEAT AMI EV WILL COSTS $22 A MONTH "After World War II, French automaker Citroën launched cheap and simple cars to gets its home country moving again. Citroën is now applying that same philosophy to electric cars with the launch of a small two-seat EV that drivers can rent for the equivalent of $22 a month." writes DigitalTrends: "The Ami has a top speed of 28 mph, and a 5.5-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack that provides 43 miles of range (as measured on the European testing cycle). A full recharge from the 220-volt home outlets typical in Europe takes 3 hours, according to Citroën. Technically, it’s a “quadricycle,” according to Citroën. That means it can be driven without a license, by people as young as 14 in France and 16 in other European countries, according to the automaker. Citroën will offer the Ami as a long-term rental for an initial payment of 2,644 euros ($2,907 U.S.), and 19.99 euros ($21.98) a month after that. " https://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/citron-ami-electric-car-available-for-long-term-rental-in-europe/ MICROLINO BUBBLE CAR-INSPIRED EV REBOOTS AT GENEVA AUTO SHOW "The original Micro Mobility Systems (MMS) Microlino electric vehicle never made it to series production, but the car is already getting a second generation. Set to debut at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show, the Microlino 2.0 will feature a new design, more space, better driving dynamics, and a safer structure. With about 17,000 reservations in hand, MMS is now planning production to begin in 2021." says Autoblog: "As for power and efficiency, the Microlino 2.0 claims to have a "stronger and more efficient e-motor," though no specs were provided. The old model made 15 horsepower and 74 lb-ft of torque and had two batteries options: an 8-kWh battery provided up to 77 miles of range or a 14.4-kWh battery provided up to 124 miles." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/02/27/updated-microlino-ev-bubble-car-debuts/ NISSAN LEAF E+ GETS LIMITED ENTRY-LEVEL MODEL "New to the line-up is the Nissan Leaf e+ N-Tec, of which just 1,000 examples will be offered. This trim is priced at £32,795 (including the £3,500 government plug-in car grant) which represents a £3,100 saving on the range-topping Leaf e+ Tekna." writes TheCarExpert: "This comes at the compromise of equipment but retains the larger 62kWh powertrain offered by the Leaf e+, which Nissan claims can deliver up to 239 miles of range between charges. For comparison, the standard 40kWh powertrain delivers a claimed 168 miles. Goodies added for no cost over the standard Leaf includes LED fog flights, semi-autonomous ProPilot features, an electronic parking brake and a metallic blue front splitter." https://www.thecarexpert.co.uk/nissan-leaf-e-gets-limited-entry-level-model/ ALL-NEW VOLKSWAGEN GOLF GTE PLUG-IN HYBRID UNVEILED The plug-in hybrid drive of the Golf GTE essentially consists of a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine, the hybrid module with an electric motor and a new lithium-ion battery. Compared with its predecessor, the all-electric range has increased significantly to now around 60 km. Volkswagen’s engineers have achieved the increase in range by improving the Golf’s aerodynamics and managing to increase the energy content of the battery by 50% to 13 kWh. It can be driven at speeds of up to 130 km/h in all-electric mode. When the battery is sufficiently charged, the Golf GTE always starts in all-electric E-MODE. The drive switches to Hybrid mode if the energy capacity of the battery drops below a certain level or if the speed rises above 130 km/h. PRODUCTION LAUNCH OF THE A-CLASS PLUG-IN HYBRID "Mercedes-Benz has started production of the plug-in hybrid versions of the A-Class at its compact car plant in Rastatt. However, Mercedes does not specify when the vehicles will be delivered to customers." reports electrive; "The PHEV versions will be assembled on the same line as the conventional internal combustion models. This will allow Mercedes to better utilize production capacity. Since Mercedes installs a larger battery of 15.6 kWh than in most other compact PHEVs, the drive battery mounted under the rear seat “blocks” the usual path for the exhaust system towards the rear. The exhaust is located centrally under the car floor, the rear silencer was packed into the center tunnel. In addition, the fuel tank was moved into the installation space of the axles. According to Daimler, this means that the A 250 e has “only slight restrictions on the boot volume compared to its non-hybrid sister models”. DC direct current charging reduces the charging time from 10 to 80 per cent to 25 minutes. Assuming a net capacity of 14 kWh, this results in a charging capacity of around 24 kW." ELECTRIFY AMERICA INVESTS IN ENVISION SOLAR INFRASTRUCTURE Electrify America is investing $2 million in solar-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in rural California that are not tied to the electrical grid. The investment will expand access to sustainable EV charging to drivers in rural areas, including the Central, Coachella, and Imperial Valleys. Electrify America is sourcing the chargers from Envision Solar, a San Diego-based sustainable technology company. The EV ARC 2020 is a transportable, solar-powered electric vehicle-charging infrastructure product. Each standalone station is equipped with a 4.28-kilowatt (kW) sun-tracking solar array, 32kWh of on-board battery storage, and two Electrify America Level 2 EV chargers capable of charging speeds up to 6kW. This combination allows for two customers to charge their vehicles at the same time using 100 percent renewable electricity – regardless of weather or time of day. PANASONIC PULLS OUT OF TESLA SOLAR PLANT IN NEW YORK "Panasonic will exit solar cell production at Tesla's New York plant, the latest sign of strain in a partnership where Panasonic's status as the U.S. electric vehicle (EV) maker's exclusive battery supplier is ending." writes Autoblog: "Tesla has informed New York that Panasonic's withdrawal "has no bearing on Tesla's current operations", the state said in a statement. Panasonic said in a statement on Wednesday that it would cease production by the end of May and exit the factory by the end of September. Panasonic said it would continue its automotive battery joint venture with Tesla in the U.S. state of Nevada, which just reported its first quarterly profit after years of production problems and delays. In the solar business, low demand from Tesla has left Panasonic sending most of the cells it makes in Buffalo to overseas clients, instead of selling them to Tesla for its trademark Solar Roof — cells designed to resemble regular roof tiles — as initially intended." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/02/26/panasonic-pulls-out-tesla-solar-new-york/ NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… How to persuade your friends, family and colleagues to buy an EV? Correcting Audi: Tesla Model 3 Charges Over 2 Times Faster Than Audi e-tron "The article was written by Simon Barke and Myles Clark. They each hold a PhD in physics, work for an international space mission at the University of Florida, and understand scientific data quite well. Matthew Mostafaei, Audi’s manager for e-tron, presented data taken from Twitter during the New York Auto Show without naming the source. (That’s plagiarism.) The data was misrepresented by plotting it on a different axis. (That’s a falsification.) He then used the data to show the e-tron’s charging superiority over the Model 3, when it actually proves the opposite. (That’s deception.) You may call this good marketing. I call it a brazen lie. At best, it is a highly misleading accident." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/05/17/correcting-audi-tesla-model-3-charges-over-2-times-faster-than-audi-e-tron/ NISSAN CLAIMS ITS UPGRADED PROPILOT SYSTEM ENABLES HANDS-OFF HIGHWAY DRIVING "Nissan is introducing a new version of its ProPilot Assist driver-assist system in Japan that marks a big step forward in automation. The current version of ProPilot Assist is basically adaptive cruise control with a lane-centering feature, but Nissan claims the new system — dubbed ProPilot 2.0 — allows for “hands-off” driving on highways." says DigitalTrends: "ProPilot 2.0 is designed to work only on highways, similar to Tesla’s Autopilot and Cadillac’s Super Cruise systems. It has the capability to follow a route set in the car’s navigation system from on-ramp to off-ramp. Once the car reaches the off-ramp, the driver must retake full control. On the highway, though, Nissan claims drivers can take their hands off the wheel while the car cruises in a single lane." https://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/nissan-propilot-20-driver-assist-system/ MG ZS EV TO BE EQUIPPED WITH 44.5 KWH BATTERY "MG (part of the Shanghai-based SAIC Motor) announced further details about the MG ZS EV, currently presented at the London Motor Show. The electric crossover will be equipped with 5 kWh liquid-cooled battery, which places it almost directly against the Hyundai Kona Electric with the 39.2 kWh standard battery. The WLTP range will be confirmed in Q3." according to InsideEVs. The press release says: "The ZS EV is powered by a 44.5kWh water-cooled battery with rapid-charging capability that will enable it to be recharged from 0-80% in 43 minutes, while domestic charging on a 7kW unit takes six-and-a-half hours from 0-100%. The cost-cutting measures are necessary despite the fact that Tesla just raised $2.7 billion earlier this month, Musk said in the email."reporst The Verge today: "Musk and Zach Kirkhorn, who recently replaced outgoing chief financial officer Deepak Ahuja, will review “all expenses of any kind anywhere in the word, including parts, salary, travel expenses, rent, literally every payment that leaves our bank account,” according to the email." https://www.theverge.com/2019/5/17/18629166/elon-musk-tesla-money-changes-cfo-employee-expenses TESLA IS UPDATING BATTERY SOFTWARE AFTER MODEL S CATCHES FIRE IN HONG KONG "A Tesla Model S caught fire in a Hong Kong parking lot on Sunday, less than a month after video of a Model S bursting into flames in Shanghai, China went viral. Now, “out of an abundance of caution,” Tesla says, the company is making software changes that could reduce the risk of batteries catching fire." reports Jalopnik: "Jalopnik spoke with a Tesla spokesperson about the incident, and the company said it is making some over-the-air changes to thermal and charge management battery software to make the Model S and X safer" Tesla said: "As we continue our investigation of the root cause, out of an abundance of caution, we are revising charge and thermal management settings on Model S and Model X vehicles via an over-the-air software update that will begin rolling out today, to help further protect the battery and improve battery longevity.” With an update on the article after it was published: "This article has been amended to clarify that the Tesla Model S or X may not necessarily have to be driving for extreme battery temperatures to occur. The new thermal management software aims to manage those temperatures under all conditions." https://jalopnik.com/tesla-is-updating-battery-software-after-a-model-s-catc-1834794877 TESLA NERFS AUTOPILOT IN EUROPE DUE TO NEW REGULATIONS "Tesla is starting to push a new software update that is pulling back some Autopilot features in most European markets due to new regulations. Tesla’s Autopilot on Model X and Model S was already approved under the previous set of regulations, but they now have to walk back some functionalities in order to comply. The changes are starting to get push to Model S and Model X vehicles in a new 2019.16.1 software update." says Fred at Electrek. Tesla wrote" “Due to new local regulations, the limit of how far the steering wheel can turn while Autosteer is active has been adjusted. This may reduce Autosteer’s ability to complete sharp turns. Additionally, to initiate Auto Lane Change, the turn signal must be engaged to the first detent (held partially up or down) and the lane change must start within 5 seconds of engaging the turn signal.” https://electrek.co/2019/05/17/tesla-nerfs-autopilot-europe-regulations/ PEUGEOT POSITIONS E-208 AS TOUGH RIVAL TO FUEL-POWERED SIBLINGS "Peugeot hopes to draw buyers to the brand's first mass-market full-electric vehicle -- the e-208 -- with a long-term battery warranty and lease rates that are comparable to internal combustion versions. The favorable terms are part of Peugeot's ambitions to have the e-208 account for 15 percent of its new small hatchback's global volume." according to Automotive News Europe: "Sales prices for the 208 will be announced this spring, but Peugeot is already promoting a 48-month, 60,000-km, 299 euro-a-month lease for the e-208, with a down payment of 2,400 euros. The company says the terms compare favorably to gasoline versions (269 euros a month) and diesel versions (289 euros a month) of the 208 when the cost of fuel is taken into consideration." https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/peugeot-positions-e-208-tough-rival-fuel-powered-siblings COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Witajcie. Tym razem chciałbym zaprosić Was do wysłuchania rozmowy z Markiem Kamińskim, z którym spotkałem się kilka dni przed rozpoczęciem jego obecnej wyprawy do Japonii - No Trace Expedition. Mieliśmy możliwość porozmawiania w samochodzie, jadąc nad Wisłę, gdzie kręciliśmy film promujący No Trace (widoczny poniżej). Projekt No Trace Expedition to najnowszy podróżniczy projekt Marka Kamińskiego. Jego realizacja będzie miała miejsce w terminie maj-lipiec 2018 roku. Thursday 17th May 2018. PORSCHE CAYENNE E-HYBRID REVIEW The first reviews are in for the Porsche Cayenne e-hybrid, ahead of the move of the legendary 911 to electrified power, so whether purists like it or not, battery power is here to stay. EVO has been my go-to magazine for performance car reviews for a long time and they're impressed: "There are now four driving modes to choose from: full electric (E-Power), Hybrid Auto, Sport and Sport Plus, all of which can be selected via the same rotational switch fitted to the steering wheel of Porsche’s range of sports cars. The default mode on start-up is full electric, which offers a range of between 14 to 27 miles on a full charge (up from 22 miles, with a full charge taking around 8 hours on a house hold plug). Switch to Hybrid mode and the Cayenne will adapt its use of the powertrain to suit the individual driving style of whoever is behind the wheel, switching between full electric and petrol-electric as and when it needs to, and with uncanny smoothness, too." As for environmental credentials, that's always hard for a gas burning SUV to argue, but: "The Cayenne E-Hybrid will return a theoretical 88mpg on the combined cycle while emitting just 72g/km (putting it 3g/km under the free congestion charge limit)." TESLA WILL USE SIX-DAY SHUTDOWN TO FIX MODEL 3 ASSEMBLY LINE PROBLEMS We know Model 3 production line shut downs are coming, and now we have more details. Tesla will pause production at its California factory for six days at the end of the May to improve the Model 3 assembly line says inside sources who have spoken to Reuters. So far we've seen shut down in February and April to upgrade the factory. Musk has said the planned stoppages are intended to give the company time to perform upgrades that will help it reach a goal of building 6,000 vehicles per week by the end of June. NISSAN LEAF NOW WITHOUT ENTRY-LEVEL VISIA TRIM Pedro at Push EVs has noticed something on the European Nissan websites: "At least in Portugal, Spain and France you can no longer order the entry-level Visia of the Nissan Leaf. With fewer trim levels to choose from, production complexity and costs are reduced. No need to waste time and resources to produce a trim level that customers don’t want. Acenta has always been the most popular trim level on the Nissan Leaf and it’s now the entry-level trim. I see this as good news, furthermore Nissan is not only adjusting the trim levels, but also the prices. Let’s see the evolution in Portugal." Indeed the UK Nissan site is also reporting the Acenta as the base model now with no sign of the Visia trim. The base model Acenta is from £25,190, the N-Connecta adds around view monitor, heated seats, 17” alloys wheels, privacy glass and electric door mirrors for £26,890. You can go up one more step to Tekna for ProPILOT assist, BOSE premium audio, leather front and rear heated seats, Full LED auto headlights and electronic parking brake from £28,390. They all of course come with e-pedal. THE 'AUTOPILOT BUDDY' IS CRAZY Regardless of whether you think Autopilot is a good name for Teslas driving assist technology, implying it does more than it actually does, they do make it as idiot proof as possible. You are required to keep your hands on the steering wheel when it deems assistance necessary, and if you do not, it gives you a visual warning on the dashboard followed by an audible one. And if you really let it go too long, the car comes to a stop. But what if you could avoid all the need for being aware about what a two ton fast moving lump of metal and batteries was doing. That's exactly what one idiot thought when they designed a product for other idiots to buy. Welcome to Autopilot Buddy. It will run you $179 and is magnetic plastic that will attach to your wheel to fool the car into thinking your hands are on it. Now there's really nothing stopping you swapping seats - yes someone was recently banned from driving for doing that - or making youtube videos off you hanging out of the window at seed - yes someone has done that. Their website says: "Tesla owners were searching for ways to hack the autopilot or extend the autopilot features without voiding the warranty. “Autopilot Buddy” allows early adopters to once again enjoy autopilot for longer durations, by reducing or turning off the autopilot check-in warning." You would only buy this product to be less attentive at the wheel. ELON MUSK HIRES TESLA INTERNS WHO HELPED SOLVE MODEL 3 PRODUCTION ISSUES Getting a Tesla internship is a dream for many engineering students, but what about when you spot something in the Model 3 process which improves production? In this case, it lands you a job offer from Elon Musk. According to Matthew Lane, one of the interns, speaking on CBC Radio: "“Essentially, it was a gating problem with the Model 3 production ramp. What had happened was we saw an opportunity to solve the problem. We came up with our own idea, and we actually sort of crashed the meeting with Elon himself and presented the idea. And, after speaking with him and one of his VPs, Doug Field, they essentially said ‘This is a good idea, but here’s the problem we are facing right now, so you guys go talk with us.’ And it snowballed from there,” he said. Mark Comeau added: "“So about a month and a half after that, we worked on this issue, brought things online. And then, literally at 10 a.m. Monday morning, the week after we’re finished, we received a message saying ‘Hey, head to Nevada to the Gigafactory.’ And, a five-hour car drive later, we arrived in Nevada, with a whole new situation and a whole new set of problems to address. “Elon is the type of CEO that is actually hands-on in the factory floor. He’s not one of those that sits on the ivory tower and just gets reports. He’s actually on the line, seeing the issues himself in person, and seeing what contributions people are making, and what the issues are. He doesn’t like to hear things second-hand. He likes everything first-hand knowledge. “So this issue had caused some delays with the production, so of course it was one thing that was always on his radar, and once we had figured it out and got it up and running reliably, he came by, and he had us walk through it. It’s probably one of the most unnerving experiences ever, because he’s the CEO of the company and here we are, just two interns. And, he’s basically like ‘Yep, you’ve got to stay.’” NISSAN’S SOLAR AND BATTERY STORAGE SYSTEM HITS UK MARKET "Nissan’s solar and battery storage system is now available to buy for homeowners across the UK" according to Energy Live News: "consumers can choose to buy either new or second life batteries from Nissan EVs – the firm adds these will be used to give increased independence from the national grid and electricity suppliers as well as the ability to generate, store and manage energy for use overnight. The cost of the solar and storage package starts at £3,881." I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Tuesday 6th March 2018. Before I start, in the last few minutes the Geneva motor show has just seen the launch of the VW ID Vizzion, with some very good carpets but a lack of steering wheel, and the Bentley Bentayga Hydrid with a “statement piece” charging station. I will decipher the press releases and talk more about what you want to know tomorrow. I-PACE DRIVEN Firstly, car mags and journalists have been given their first taste of driving the new all electric Jaguar I-PACE as they arrive for the Geneva Motor Show. However these aren’t what you call in depth road tests and the drives were limited to a few minutes around a carefully controlled track designed by Jag, but we don’t care, the first reviews are in. Firstly Autoexpress who say “The I-Pace ticks the usual EV boxes, with instant torque delivery and the ability to slow down to a complete halt just by lifting off the throttle pedal. But there’s also impressive refinement from those dual motors; only a faint whine is audible under hard acceleration.” Car Magazine on the other hand praise the steering and how jaguar-y it feels. I presume that’s a compliment. They also noticed how aggressive the top level of regen was and inform us that Jaguar engineers say one pedal driving is suitable for 98% of all braking events. Until some more in depth reviews surface in May that’s all we have to be getting on with, but I’ll keep an eye on the in person comments at Geneva. CUPRA EV SPECS On the podcast recently was news about Volkswagen’s Spanish division Seat, and their Cupra eRacer, the first touring car powered by electrons. At the time I lamented any actual specs because I’m guess you like me, enjoy a stat or two. Well now we have more details. It reaches 100km/h or 62mph in 3.2 Sec, onto an eventual 270km/h, thanks to 4 electric motors and continuous 402hp, which allow a peak of up to 670hp. The battery pack has 6,077 cells, weighing in at 450kg which makes up a third of the car’s weight Cupra e-Racer Technical Director, Xavier Serra says “One of this vehicle’s most surprising aspects has to be its power. The Cupra e-Racer can reach 12,000 revolutions, compared to the 6,500 of a petrol powered racer car, and all with a single gear.” It’s race-ready too, with a roll cage and racing displays. Will it ever race? Is this just proof of concept? And if so, can I please have it when you’re finished showing it off. MERCEDES SMART CARS AND EQ POWER The Mercedes Benz Smart Cars have always been a little arms length from it’s parent. The showroom near here for instance has a separate building, logos and branding. It’s very different to Mercedes showroom. Now Mercedes are bringing the Smart electric into the fold, and making it part of their EQ brand of EVs. CEO of smart Dr. Annette Winkler said: “smart is electric, innovative, intelligent and totally unique, or in three words each: ‘smart EQ fortwo’ and ‘smart EQ forfour’. With the smart EQ fortwo/forfour, we are putting the first products from the Mercedes-Benz Cars EQ family on urban roads and showing how much fun electric mobility can be.” The new models also come with a more powerful onboard charger for level 2 charging, up to 22kW power. Staying with Mercedes they also launched their EQ Power plug-in diesel hybrid. They say that electrification via hybrid means that they are locally-emission free, which is somewhat of a caveat as they run on diesel. The powertrain will be available for C-Class and upwards, with benefits for efficiency and performance. But it still burns Diesel. The electric range of 50km is in line with what we’ve seen from other plug-in hybrids recently, this time with a 13.5kWh battery and onboard 7.2kW charger, with 2 hours charge time to full. They talk about pre-entry climate control, a benefit pure electric owners love, being part of their plug ins too. Their press release goes on to mention improvements in diesel, the combustion process and internal friction. I switched off slightly because it means you have all the bits of a diesel to go wrong and need servicing. I’ll leave you with a thought on hybrids. The threat of heavy fines from European Union regulators regarding manufacturers missing CO2 reduction targets, combined with a switch away from diesel cars by customers, is a cause for some very unhappy diesel fans in the boardroom. Many people are holding off buying a diesel, even a hybrid, after reading headlines of major cities banning use of the fuel. FORMER OPEL CEO LOVES ELECTRIC Former Opel CEO Karl-Thomas Neumann was the exec who wanted Opel to be an electric-only automaker, has gone all-electric himself with a Tesla and a BMW i3. You'd think he probably has a few ways to get a pretty steep discount at Opel. I joke of course, but Electrek point out the challenges of being pro-electric at an automaker where so much profit and jobs rely on selling combustion engines a little bit longer. His plan was hardly radical, he was giving 14 years or so to gradually phase out engine engines and pivot to EV's by 2030. However things didn't work out that way as GM sold their European division of Opel to PSA. He has form in electric cars too, having previously led VW's electric plans for a period. I do have sympathy for other execs, who have hundreds of thousands or even millions of employees and those in the supply chain, to take the jump from existing revenue streams to electric sales. They've also made long term investments into engines which have long life cycles and they need to recoup their R&D costs. Hopefully it will be self-fulfilling as they see competitors earn from EV's, more will take the leap. DETAILS OF ELECTRIC FORDS The next generation of Ford Focus is one of the only cars not be featured at the Geneva Motor Show but we'll see more of it in April. Sources say the dash will feature a more prominent tablet sixed touchscreen, although not Model 3 levels of display. They are said to be using a soft hybrid 48-volt electric system to power an integrated starter-generator, an increasingly popular way to use electrons to supplement the engine and take away some of the duties the engine would have provided, such as pumps and belts and starters. NISSAN LEAF COLD WEATHER TEST The Toronto Electric Vehicle Association has taken a new Nissan LEAF out in winter conditions of -7°C (19.4 Fahrenheit). During the motorway/highway test drive the LEAF energy consumption was 29.3 kWh/100 km (62 miles). Factors include the route, the temperature and even the heated seats. That's a long way off 151 miles by EPA measure, so start doing that sun dance and hope for warm weather. There was more love for the e-Pedal which every review I've seen raves about and also ProPilot. READERS LETTERS I saw a story in a popular newspaper here in the UK which barely deserved the time to read it, as it said the recent cold weather we’ve had means that electric car batteries would run down “in no time” with heaters on, wonderfully vague and blatantly wrong. Now The Guardian have printed a response from a reader: “I had to laugh at John Richards’s worry about people freezing in stuck electric vehicles because their batteries would run down in “no time” while those in a petrol car could run their heater (Letters, 3 March). Running the heated seats and climate control for about seven hours costs about three miles of range for my Tesla.” Cat Burton Another reader replied: “My Renault Zoe has a battery capacity of 40 kilowatt hours, enough to run a one-bar electric for for 40 hours. I suspect my car would keep me warm longer than a petrol or diesel vehicle, without the added hazard of surrounding the car with noxious fumes.” Geoff Williams, Wolverhampton” Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it. We'd love to spread the word about electric cars so please do share this with at least one person who might be interested. Just a reminder you can listen to all of our previous podcasts on iTunes, Google Play for your Android devices, and most recently now on Spotify’s Podcast section. On this podcast, Nora Young talks about insurance company Arity's driver safety project. Drivers put an app on their phone that monitors whether drivers are picking up their phones or engaging with apps while they drive. It's a bid to charge people more or less for insurance, depending on whether they are distracted or not (via CNN). Arity is a branch of insurance giant Allstate. Nora wonders whether this is a harbinger of the future. Meanwhile, Cathi Bond talks about a cool project from Nissan. In a temporary project, they're placing 'self-parking' slippers at an Inn. The slippers return to their spot by the door - by themselves - thanks to an application of Nissan's ProPilot technology, normally used to help park your car (via PSFK). They had previously used the same technology to move chairs. See more here. Nora also mentions the Nite Hood sleep mask
