It's the LAST Casual Friday of 2022! The MR Crew are doing a clips-and-calls show before the holidays, and are also joined by Matthew Film Guy (@langdonboom)to discuss the recent Sight & Sound poll! First, Sam, and Emma run through updates on the final report from the January 6th committee, NY Gov Hochul fitting perfectly into the Cuomo mold, Sam Bankman-Fried paying off his $250 million bond in fiat currency, and Congressman-elect George Santos' crumbling resume, before diving into the $1.7 trillion spending bill making it through the Senate and House, revamping the GOP leadership debate (and perhaps bringing Steve Scalise into the fold). Then, they take calls with Jay from New Haven on CT's solar energy policy, Aaron from Madison on fighting back against the Independent State Legislature Theory, and Amy from San Francisco on QAnon Anonymous' deep dive into Tusli Gabbard's cult. Then, they're joined by Matthew Film Guy as he dives right into the drama surrounding Sight & Sound's recent “Greatest Films of All Time” poll where Citizen Kane and Vertigo were finally overtaken for the #1 spot by a WOMAN-DIRECTED movie “Jeanne Dielman, 23 Commerce Quay, 1080 Brussels.” They walk through the anti-woke backlash to this result, as Matthew dives into the difference between an active culture war and the democratization of a poll, with Sight & Sound expanding the number of voters beyond a couple of hundred for the first time in their history, before launching into the beauty and vision of Chantal Akerman's boundary-pushing work, its long-term rise into mainstream discourse, and the importance of creating art with sensitive visions of life. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch AOC tackle the USPS deal and their shift toward Electric Vehicles being undermined by Louis DeJoy putting a scab facility at the center of the production, Drew from Portland Oregon calls in to discuss DeSantis' alternate health agency and the impact it could have on the Right's war on trans care, and John from San Antonio walks through the massive boom in union support that we've seen in 2022. They also dive deeper into Kathy Hochul's nomination of a severely conservative judge to New York's Chief Justice position, and Matt Taibbi's response to critiques (such as Matt Taibbi from a year ago) of him doing PR for a billionaire. Revis from the Twin Cities reveals a Sam Seder cameo in the Magic Schoolbus, Candace Owens has some thoughts on the Confederate Flag, and Charlie from Washington explores how to push your state to become a safe space for trans folks escaping persecution, plus, your calls and IMs! It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Dave Weigel, author of the "Americana" newsletter at Semafor, to discuss the state of play less than 2 weeks out from the midterm elections. Then, they're joined by Matthew Film Guy! Emma and Sam first run through updates on the midterms, including Schumer's statement to Biden on the PA Senatorial Debate, and Don Bolduc's pivot against his pivot against election denial. Dave Weigel then joins as he dives right into the disconnect between polling and the actual state of democratic candidates heading into the midterms, exploring how the last few weeks have slowly revealed failures in the democratic messaging leading up to November. Stepping back, Dave, Emma, and Sam explore the particular failures of letting Republicans pretend the future of abortion isn't actually at risk (when Roe was actually overturned) while also allowing them to fearmonger around crime (when no major police departments were actually defunded). Parsing through the house races in New York, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, Dave looks at where and against whom the GOP was able to successfully center crime, before they shift the conversation to the Democrats' failure to consistently hit on any of their inflation talking points. Wrapping up the interview, Dave walks through the Democratic House seats that are seriously endangered, and why beyond losing the House, they're likely to drop the Senate as well. Matthew Film Guy then joins as he explores his recent bouts with Shingles and Marc Maron, before diving into his movie recommendations of Larisa Shepitko's “The Ascent” and “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar” from Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Charlie Kirk praise Elon Musk's liberation of Twitter before diving into why the profit incentive in a world that isn't super pro-bigotry might not let that happen. Sam discusses his shadow ban from the Right Stuff (hopefully isn't plaguing other Divorcées like Prager), and Tyler from Washington discusses the Right's fear of debating Sam and why that fear doesn't extend to women and people of color. David from Atlanta discusses the GA senate race, the crew discusses the home invasion of the Pelosi estate, and Stephen Crowder says ableism is the new racism, as if they haven't gone hand in hand for centuries, plus, your calls and IMs! It's Casual Friday! Sam speaks with David Dayen, executive editor at the American Prospect, to break down the week in news. Then, Sam and Emma are joined by Francesca Fiorentini, host of The Bitchuation Room podcast! Sam and Emma first run through updates on Hurricane Ian's path of devastation, leaving millions of Floridians without power, the passing of a continuing resolution, Pelosi's poison pill on the stock trading ban, and updates on the Pentagon's funding of Ukraine. David Dayen then joins as he gets right into his recent piece breaking down the legislative process that led us to the passing of the Inflation Reduction Act, starting with the Democrats packing their entire agenda into Biden's Build Back Better plan, only for it to get widdled and widdled down into the Manchin-endorsed IRA. They parse through the unifying factors of the policies that made it through the process, looking at how their longer pedigree and presence in Congress and consultant spheres separated them from other (but largely as pressing) policies, making it incredibly difficult to govern for the present when any potential legislation must have been building up for decades, before looking to what got left on the cutting room floor, with childcare, education, college, housing, and child poverty all remaining unaddressed. After summarizing the central elements of the IRA (climate change policy, prescription drug pricing, and general tax reform), Dayen walks through the story of these policy initiatives, with the climate policy stemming from discussions at the beginning of Manchin's reign in the senate between him and Ron Wyden and evolving in the wake of the failures of the Waxman-Markey bill under Obama, also exploring the history behind prescription drug pricing and touching on the role of the 2020 Primaries as a rolling thinktank for much of this policy, before wrapping up with the history the wealth taxes and the importance of introducing legislation (even if it isn't ready to pass). And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma are joined by Francesca Fiorentini of the Bitchuation Room as they dive into a new right-wing dating app where Sam can find the AnCap of his dreams, the reactions of Ben Shapiro, Matt Walsh, and the likes to seeing a talented classical (Black) musician dance with a flute, and the continued horror stories coming from the Right's crackdown on reproductive rights. They also discuss the Student Debt Relief lawsuits coming from the right, the state of Putin's failing invasion, plus, your IMs! Emma hosts Alex Pareene, Contributing Editor at the New Republic and proprietor of the AP newsletter on Substack, to round up the week in news. Then, Emma is joined by Astra Taylor, co-founder of the Debt Collective and author of the recent book Remake the World: Essays, Reflections, Rebellions, to discuss Biden's student loan forgiveness program. Then, Emma is joined by Astra Taylor, co-founder of the Debt Collective and author of the recent book, “Remake the World: Essays, Reflections, Rebellions,” to discuss Biden's student loan forgiveness program. Emma also touches on the likelihood of the Mar-a-Lago affidavit's release today, Biden's BOOMING (44%) approval rating, and recent appearances in the wake of electoral Ws having much more energy. Then, Alex Pareene drops by as he and Emma get right into the rising charisma of supposed “Dark Brandon,” as he begins feeling himself coming out of the success of the IRA, January 6th Committee, and canceling student debt, as Democrats finally come along on the whole “actually, getting things done is a good thing” idea (with months until the midterms we can only hope it wasn't too little too late). Next, they dive into the mixed bag of the NY election results, discussing the Democrats absolutely blowing the bag with redistricting, employing the weight of that failure to push progressives into infighting, and why the lesson to be learned from this is to upset the first-past-the-post electoral system, employing ranked voting and other experimental policies, and to either detach from or completely reinvent Congressional Electoral Committees like the DCCC. Wrapping up they dive into the intensifying 1/6 Committee, walking through the foolish institutionalism that would have Merrick Garland believe that following DOJ requisites would shield him from backlash, assessing his base entering the midterms, and the importance of actually putting forwards multiple issues beyond “they're being unfair to me” in winning an election (See: Hillary 2016). Astra Taylor and Emma then conclude the free half by walking through the story of student debt relief, beginning during the Occupy Wall Street movement, met with the typical media dismissiveness, only to evolve over the next decade (with help from Congressional progressives like Warren, Sanders, and even Schumer) into a political movement that not only has viability but even practical implementation, wrapping up by taking on the legitimacy of the “minimal relief” critiques on the debt forgiveness. And in the Fun Half: Emma watches as Blake Masters starts a to-thiel coverup of his anti-abortion past, Jared Kushner discusses his billionaire fantasies of immortality and Martha MacCallum asks if it's hard to be part of a family that gets arrested so much. Tim Pool brings it back to the mediocre rock of the ‘90s, and – much to Jesse Watters' titillation – Missouri brings back spanking as an academic punishment. The crew also responds to the “why do you deserve student debt relief if you went to a private college” talking point, plus, your calls and IMs! It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Jamelle Bouie, opinion columnist at the New York Times and co-host of the Unclear and Present Danger podcast, to discuss his recent piece "Joe Manchin Is a Symptom, but It's the Senate That's Sick". Sam and Emma begin by diving into the advancing legislation to codify contraceptive rights alongside same-sex marriage, Miami's crackdown on sex ed and Oklahoma's “don't say abortion” ruling, and Fox and Friends' meltdown on the Jan 6 hearings. Then Jamelle Bouie joins as he dives right into the classic Senate mechanistic dysfunction as the US faces a heatwave (overheating creates a greater desire for vacation time), with Manchin killing his own proposals as he takes on the Senate's role of minoritarian veto. Next, they shift into a discussion more focused on the Democratic Party, meeting their opponents' incredibly unpopular crusade with a commitment to institutional chumminess and a fear of appearing anything by bipartisan (when the “bi” means working with homophobes and misogynists), and the role this impotency plays in Biden's falling approval. Moving into yesterday's 1/6 hearings, the three of them discuss the disconnect between the committee's impact on the parties' approval ratings (massive) and Biden's (nothing), how this very clearly disproves Democratic leadership's obsession with bipartisanship, before they wrap up the interview by looking at the upcoming bill on the allocations of electoral votes, and the role it can play with the Supreme Courts' future cases on the matter. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma tackle the success of the 1/6 hearings, the updates on the role of Trump's Secret Service in the coverup and Pence's Secret Service in fearing for their lives, and walk through Trump's “truths” from last night. Dr. Oz appears on Fox News to tell his supporters to stop mowing their lawns and give him money, Jethro from Louisville reflects on Bolton's denouncement of the way kids these days don't plan out their coups as he did, and Valerie from AZ explores wordplay against the right. David Rubin assures Jordan Peterson that his husband will serve as a somewhat maternal presence, and Moira from NY explores transphobia and the lack of a Democratic response. Sam previews some Nick Fuentes leaks, Malcolm from TX discusses gun control and hunting, plus, your calls and IMs! It's Casual Friday! Sam hosts Jamelle Bouie, opinion columnist at the New York Times and co-host of the Unclear and Present Danger podcast, to discuss his recent piece "The Gerontocracy of the Democratic Party Doesn't Understand That We're at the Brink." First, Sam dives right into the Supreme Court's overturning of the half-century precedent of Roe v. Wade as the first major rollback of any established right in US history, the thirteen trigger laws it enacts, and the future of reproductive health when healthcare professionals are forced to weigh they own well being and security in making decisions. Jamelle Bouie then joins as he and Sam dive right into the growing divide between establishment Democrats and younger progressives in just acknowledging the horrendous state of our politics, as seen in Whip Clyburn's official response to the Roe decision stating that it was “anti-climactic,” and take on the role of the Gerontocratic leadership of the Democratic party and their ossified perspective on how politics can and does function in the 21st Century, from Pelosi's requests for a “strong Republican party” to Biden's praising of McConnell's integrity. Next, Bouie dives into his recent research into the Republican party that preceded today's neoconservatism and their shift to hard-edged partisanship, contrasting this with the Democrats' desire to triangulate in politics, as we saw with Hillary's comments on sacrificing trans people for the integrity of anti-democratic institutionalism, and refusal to acknowledge that, yes, the GOP does mean what they say. After a conversation on the future of this fight, and the other big fights coming down the SCOTUS pipeline, Sam and Jamelle wrap up the interview by assessing the 1/6 hearings, Mike Pence, and the Democratic leadership's attempted creation of right-wing heroes. Sam further dives into the other precedents (Griswald, Casey, Loving, etc) that are put in question by this decision and the absurdity of Thomas' argument that this won't set a precedent… while encouraging an extension of this decision to future cases. And in the Fun Half: Sam explores the meaning behind the Majority Report name, James Carville asks for our help, and House Democrats sing God Bless America for some unknowable reason. Katie from Providence dives deeper into the subjectivity around the abortion “exemptions,” and how the objective nature of the punishment for abortions will easily overshadow them. Shannon from the USVIs discusses supporting Black women in the US, Alan and Brendan from North Carolina reflect on the shaping of their perspectives on reproductive rights, Valerie from AZ talks constitutionality and the Supreme Court teeing up myriad elements of queer rights to be overturned, and Mindy reads a statement from the Archdiocese of New York. The crew listens to Mick Lynch's inspirational responses to the UK media's insulting coverage of their rail strike, and Ron Johnson throws Mike Kelly under the bus, to which Kelly says, “who?” Jeff Clark can't believe that Federal Agents wouldn't let him wear the pants in their relationship, plus, your calls and IMs! It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com and proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo, to round up the week in news. Then, Sam and Emma are joined by Matthew Film Guy! Emma and Sam first dive into the Uvalde Police's ever-changing story, the White House's upcoming, likely-to-fail gun control package, and the GOP striking down a domestic terror bill, before watching Texas Lt. Chris Olivarez excuse Uvalde police's inaction as believing they had “contained” the shooter… inside of a childrens' classroom. Digby then joins as she and Sam reflect on two decades of covering these senselessly devastating instances of gun violence against children, from Wayne LaPierre asking the government to pry his gun from his “cold dead hands” in the wake of Columbine, to the tentative moments after Sandy Hook, where it seemed as though politicians would come around to reform, only for the NRA to disseminate all of the necessary talking points in a complete rejection of progress. This brings Emma, Sam, and Heather to a discussion on the collapse of the NRA in recent years, held up in court over embezzlement charges, yet with the Republican base more than picking up their torch and centering fundamentalist takes on gun ownership in electoral pushes. After briefly touching on the failure of Democrats in the wake of these mass shootings, reaching all the way back to their blame of Al Gore's gun control stance in 2000, Sam, Emma, and Digby return to the devastation in Uvalde as they tackle how a fully-militarized police department, as we have throughout the US, finds it reasonable to leave a mass shooter in a school filled with children due to fears for THEIR OWN (the cops') safety, as the Uvalde Police now claim they believed there to be no more living children in the classroom, despite the multiple incoming 911 calls FROM LIVING CHILDREN, clamoring from one lie to another as federal inaction from the democrats is the only repercussion that looms. Then, Matthew Film Guy joins as they discuss the central importance of art in creating the worlds we imagine for our futures, and in challenging and disrupting the status quo of our present, as Sam, Emma, and he give their takes on the importance of John Cassavetes and Mad Men, and Matthew rounds out the interview with his recommendations of Andrey Zvyagintsev's “Loveless” and John Gianvito's “Profit Motive and the Whispering Wind.” And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma look to the GOP's stale response to mass shootings, as Kevin McCarthy pushes the “mental health” talking point, while refusing to address or help mental health, and Lauren Boebert cites 9/11 to ask “why ban guns when we didn't ban planes,” despite the countless massive (and problematic) regulations that DID arise in the wake of the terror attack. They also get into Biden sending out previews for a $10k student debt cancellation (for certain people only, of course), and Dave Rubin, the last liberal, now identifies as a Republican, plus, your IMs! It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Ari Rabin-Havt, former deputy campaign manager for Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt), to discuss his recent book The Fighting Soul: On the Road with Bernie Sanders. Then, Sam and Emma are joined by Matthew Film Guy! Ari, Emma, and Sam first dive into what his roles were traveling with Bernie throughout the 2020 campaign, particularly in the wake of Ari's arrival on the team in the wake of his 2016 run. Ari Rabin-Havt then explores what it's like to have that intimate perspective, particularly when it comes to Bernie's atypical relationship to his popularity, which jumped to unprecedented levels in 2016, and in his reflections on bringing the magic from his previous campaign into 2020. After touching further on Bernie's evolution between the two elections, Ari reflects on the role of Democratic leadership in completely leaving Bernie out to dry when it came to his fight with Jeff Bezos in 2018 and giving him the inside lane there, and discusses how the relationship between Bernie and Elizabeth Warren developed over the course of the second campaign, from the launch of their campaigns, to Bernie's heart attack, and all the way through the well-documented clash on the Iowa debate stage. Sam, Emma, and Ari briefly touch on any massive changes to the campaign that would've been made in reflection two years later, from the first debate to Super Tuesday, before they wrap up the interview by discussing the central importance of a movement of workers to actually carry and support the progressive agenda, the importance of supporting actual organizers, and what possibilities remain around a third Bernie presidential campaign. Then, Matthew Film Guy (AKA Film Guy Matthew) discloses his BTS drama in his most recent movie, and walks through THREE movie recommendations, including Apichatpong Weerasethakul's “Syndromes and a Century,” Joanna Hogg's romance in the time of Thatcher “The Souvenir,” and Luchino Visconti's work “Rocco and his Brothers.” Sam gives Matthew his Disney World tips, and Sam and Emma cover re-juiced military aid to Ukraine, Biden's tiptoe tapdance with student debt relief, and the absurdity of means-testing. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma do their darndest to decipher Elon Musk's take on twitter's “left-wing bias” (not liking anti-semitism?) and Sam dives into the incompatibility between the right-wing (driven by a sense of grievance, desire to own the libs) and an exclusively right-wing social media (nobody to claim is attacking them, nobody to then own). OK State Sen. Warren Hamilton objects to women receiving life-saving medical procedures, Tucker Carlson and Glenn Greenwald discuss Russia's (really the Democrats') invasion of Ukraine, and why Putin (really the Democrats) did this, plus, your IMs! Today on ShrinkChicks, Emmalee and Jen sit down with the hosts of the Pillow Talks Podcast, Vanessa & Xander Marin, to talk all about sex. Vanessa is a licensed psychotherapist with 20 years of experience in the sex therapy field and Xander's a regular dude who's been married to a sex therapist for over a decade. They start by normalizing the idea of scheduling sex and explain why it can be really wonderful for our sex lives. They then go on to answer your sex life questions like: how to approach a conversation with your partner about having more sex, how to work to heal from a past sexual trauma with your partner, the difference between couples therapy and sex therapy, how to increase libido, and working through self consciousness during sex. We learn why Vanessa does not like the word “rejection” when it comes to sex, a story about Xander's 90 year old Nana listening to their podcast, and why sex doesn't have to be spontaneous to be good. You do not want to miss this one! You can find Vanessa, Xander, and all of their amazing content @vanessamarintherapy on Instagram and on their website: vmtherapy.com ! Just before the Summer of Love, 22-year-old John Griggs discovered LSD and had an epiphany – he would serve as the Hippie Messiah and guide the world to psychedelic revolution. Alec Guinness tells a child to stop watching Star Wars and drives him to tears. Kenny Baker - the man inside R2D2 - dies, but not before meeting the son he never knew. After great emotional struggle, George Lucas sells Star Wars to Disney. After a lifetime of total control, now he has to say “goodbye.” Carrie Fisher boards a plane at Heathrow Airport in London in 2016 and stops breathing before reaching Los Angeles. The world says goodbye to Princess Leia. Lucas acknowledges the fact that Star Wars used to be his, and now it’s ours. He used to live only for movies - and then he had children. Finally, a wide-eyed return to a movie theater in 1977 and the first time anyone ever saw Star Wars.Support us by supporting our sponsors!Quip - Quip starts at just $25 and if you go to getquip.com/YODA right now, you can get your first refill pack for FREE.Buffy - For $20 off your Buffy comforter, visit Buffy.co and enter code YODA
Casting begins for Star Wars. Carrie Fisher wins a role, runs into the rain, and shouts to the heavens: “I am Princess Leia!” George Lucas doesn’t want Harrison Ford in the cast, but it just so happens Harrison's building a door all week and is in the right place at the right time. Mark Hamill awakens on Robert Englund’s couch just in time to find out about “the perfect role” for him - with dialogue that is absolutely befuddling. The men inside R2D2 and C3PO come to terms with the extraordinary discomfort of their costumes - and their dislike for each other. Alec Guinness hates science fiction “fairy-tale rubbish” and considers Lucas to be “a touch boring.” Meanwhile Lucas is plowing his own money into Star Wars and still has no green light from Fox. That’s when he faces a choice: Either make the movie for half of what he needs or Star Wars will be shut down.Support us by supporting our sponsors! Brene Brown (http://brenebrown.com/) and I met a few years back while speaking at an event. We clicked immediately, grabbed lunch and laughed a lot. I asked her to come and share a bit of her journey with our Good Life Project community. The conversation that unfolded left me changed.Brown’s fascination with what she calls wholehearted living eventually led her to explore how we dance with shame and vulnerability, and how we navigate criticism, and awaken to our own power and potential. How we become brave, awake and alive. She's since written numerous books, including, Daring Greatly (http://brenebrown.com/books/), Rising Strong (https://amzn.to/2vvqvnE) and Braving the Wilderness (https://amzn.to/2M2YWfQ).I asked her to join me on Good Life Project in October 2012 and the conversation that unfolded moved us both to tears at various points. Brene was so beautifully real, raw, candid and wise. Every part of that conversation is as relevant today, maybe more so given the current climate, than it was the day we talked. We first aired this as a video conversation in October 2012. Click here to watch the video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=Sd3DYvBGyFs). Raised on an island in South Carolina, singer/songwriter Trevor Hall realized at a young age that music was more than just a passion - it was his life’s art. So, he moved to California to pursue a degree in music, began performing live shows and was quickly signed to his dream deal at a major label. His trajectory seemed meteoric, then everything came tumbling down. His albums never made it out of production, he found himself out of money, abandoned by his label and on his own to figure out how to move forward.During this same time, he was also introduced to yoga and meditation and found himself traveling to a local ashram to practice and eventually find housing and sustenance. In his time of greatest need, he found himself living in the ashram, then traveling to India and rediscovering who he really was and how he wanted to bring his music and voice to the world. From there, he began to rebuild not only his living as a musician, but also his life.Hall’s music, a blend of roots and folk music with hints of inspiration from India, has since led him to a series of sold-out tours and collaborations with artists such as Steel Pulse, The Wailers, Jimmy Cliff, Matisyahu, Michael Franti, Xavier Rudd and Nahko & Medicine for the People. Trevor Hall’s Chapter of the Forest (2014) and KALA (2015), debuted at #3 and #2 on the iTunes singer/songwriter chart respectively. He is currently touring around the US and Australia. While on tour, Hall collects donations to support children’s education in India.Hall’s latest album, The Fruitful Darkness, became the #1 Kickstarter Music campaign of 2017 and debuted at #9 on the iTunes alternative chart.Be sure to listen to the end, where Trevor shares a moving acoustic rendition of one of his songs, live in the studio.Check out our offerings & partners: Camp Good Life Project – This is the final year of Camp GLP [and less than 20 spots remain]! She reveals the genesis of this work, her own 20-year marriage, her struggle with attachment to "what was" and the innately human need to contain and define and preserve it. Jen Sincero is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of You are a Badass and You are a Badass at Making Money. But it all started from humble beginnings, playing in a band and living in a garage in Venice Beach, California, Sincero made a decision to change her life, stepping into her true identity, leading with her real, wise, funny, badass voice, and reframing her relationship with money.
