The Suburban Women Problem
Lessons from 1964 Freedom Summer (with Judy Richardson)

The Suburban Women Problem

We were so lucky this week to talk to Judy Richardson, who fought for civil rights alongside John Lewis during the original 1964 Freedom Summer. She hasn't stopped fighting in the years since and we were honored to hear her inspiring (and, at times, harrowing) stories of being shot at by white supremacists, years of on-the-ground organizing, and hunger strikes in jail. It was all worth it, Judy says, to pursue voting rights for Black people in the South. When we asked her what kept her going through the hard times (and what keeps her going today), she had a few answers that we could really relate to. First, she said it's her anger at the injustice. Second, it's music -- protest music, gospel music, and even salsa. Third, and most importantly, it's the people. Once she saw the courage and dedication of her fellow workers at the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, she felt she didn't have a choice but to continue the work. What we're seeing with voting rights this year is unfortunately way too similar to what Judy was fighting back in the 1960s. But far from giving up, Judy energized us to carry on the work for the next generation.Don't miss this episode! Judy is a national treasure. For a transcript of this episode, please email comms@redwine.blue. Playlist: Seven Steps to Heaven Miles Davis (trompet), Ron Carter (bas), Anthony Williams, Frank Butler (drums), Herbie Hancock, Victor Feldman (piano), George Coleman (tenorsax), Nefertiti Miles Davis (trompet), Wayne Shorter (tenorsax), Tony Williams (drums), Ron Carter (bas), Herbie Hancock (piano) Boplicity Miles Davi (trompet), Lee Konitz (altsax), Gerry Mulligan (baritonsax), John Lewis (piano), Kenny Clark (drums), Nelson Boyd (bas)J.J.

Send us Fan MailTogetherness is not a warm slogan, it's the only way we meet the scale of what's in front of us. From the start, we press on a simple question: how do you remember the past honestly without letting it turn into bitterness? In this episode, Bishop Wright has a conversation with Senator Jon Ossoff about faith, leadership, and what it takes to build a better world when the headlines feel like a steady stream of bad news. Ossoff traces his moral education through the legacy of Congressman John Lewis and the civil rights movement in Georgia, including the historic alliance between Black and Jewish communities in the South. He shares the powerful symbolism of being sworn into the US Senate on scripture belonging to Rabbi Jacob Rothschild, the Atlanta rabbi whose temple was bombed in 1958 for supporting Dr. King and the SCLC. They discuss what interfaith coalition building looks like when it's real, not performative, and why serious faith traditions should pull us alongside each other when the stakes are high. Listen in for the full conversation. Born and raised in Georgia, Senator Jon Ossoff serves as our Senior United States Senator. Since his election, Sen. Ossoff has built bipartisanship in the Senate to achieve meaningful legislative results for Georgia — even in a divided Congress. In his first two years in office, Sen. Ossoff passed into law more standalone bills than any other freshman Senator. Sen. Ossoff's legislative achievements include laws to protect children online; to strengthen public safety; to tackle the opioid epidemic and prevent fentanyl trafficking across the Southern Border; to investigate unsolved lynchings and Civil Rights murders; to strengthen mental health care services for veterans; and to fight corruption and improve security in U.S. prisons. Mentored by civil rights legend Congressman John Lewis, Sen. Ossoff previously led a small business that produced investigative journalism exposing war crimes, public corruption, human trafficking, and organized crime. Sen. Ossoff lives with his wife, Dr. Alisha Kramer, and two daughters in Atlanta.Support the show Follow us on IG and FB at Bishop Rob Wright.

Historian and New York Times bestselling author Jemar Tisby joins Mark Labberton to confront the Supreme Court's 6–3 ruling in Louisiana v. Callais, which has eviscerated Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and reopened the door to racial gerrymandering across the South. Recorded in the immediate aftermath, the conversation traces the long arc from the Three-Fifths Clause and Dred Scott through Selma to this hour. "This has landed in the black community harder and heavier than a lot of what we've seen during the Trump administration." In this episode with Mark Labberton, Tisby reflects on the history of black disenfranchisement, the cynicism of colorblind jurisprudence, and what remains of multiracial democracy in America. Together they discuss how the legal architecture of Jim Crow reemerges under neutral language, John Roberts's decades-long campaign against the Voting Rights Act, Justice Kagan's umbrella analogy, the suspension of Louisiana's primary, the black church's response, and why this midterm may be the country's last political chance. Episode Highlights "This has landed in the black community harder and heavier than a lot of what we've seen during the Trump administration, and that's saying a lot." "It boggles the mind that folks sitting on the highest court in the land who have been to all these Ivy League schools, have literally decades of experience, can get it so wrong and stand so arrogantly on such faulty reasoning." "Colorblindness only works if you're starting from a level playing field." "These are not good-faith actors, not people wanting a representative democracy, but people wanting to consolidate power, which we call minority rule." "If you can't win on the merits of what you believe, then you have to rig the system so that no one can get you out of office." Historical context provides a sobering look at this moment, drawing parallels between the struggles in Selma and Birmingham and the current judicial landscape. The bravery of civil rights icons like John Lewis and the tragic sacrifices of activists in Mississippi highlight the high cost of the rights now being systematically undid with a word processor. Political figures are already moving to capitalize on this ruling, with plans to redraw congressional districts in ways that could zero out black representation in the House of Representatives. This isn't just about technical tweaks to the law; it is about the future of the 15th Amendment and the fundamental right to a meaningful vote. The ripple effects of this decision will be felt in state legislatures and city councils across the country as partisan gerrymandering receives a green light from the highest bench. Sam Alito's majority opinion rewrites the Voting Rights Act to impose a race-neutral standard on a law that was explicitly and intentionally race-conscious — designed to protect Black voters from racial vote dilution and racially discriminatory gerrymandering. Legal scholar Rick Hasen of UCLA Law calls it possibly the worst Supreme Court decision in 100 years. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry has already announced he is canceling May primaries to redraw congressional maps and eliminate Black representation from the state's congressional delegation. Tennessee's Nashville district — carved up like a pizza to dilute Black and Democratic votes — is a preview of what comes next nationwide. The Voting Rights Act, last reauthorized by Congress with near-unanimous bipartisan support in 2006, no longer has teeth. Section 5 was gutted in 2013. Section 2 is gone now. What remains is a statute with no enforcement mechanism and no path to sue. Buy-to-let landlords will pay a tax rate two percentage points higher than the basic and higher rates of tax from April 2027. Frozen threshold bands until 2030 means most of us will pay more tax due to ‘fiscal drag'. This is in addition to the hike in the stamp duty surcharge on second property purchases to 5%, which is having a detrimental effect on property development and flipping. Ep. 232 | In this potent and profound conversation, Zen teachers, Integral Facilitators, and conflict mediators, Diane Musho Hamilton and her student and co-author Gabriel Wilson, eloquently reveal the practical benefits of a life founded on contemplative practice. What they bring home so effectively—both in this conversation and in their new book, Waking Up and Growing Up—is how much we have to gain from an interface of traditional Zen and contemporary knowledge. “Buddhist practice is the most genius way to work with human suffering,” Diane says, and grounded in awareness of the fundamental oneness is where we want to be when engaging in social or political activism, or when facing any kind of conflict. “It's the evolution of consciousness and the attendant set of skills to support that,” she continues. We can awaken to an awareness of our true nature, and then take up the gauntlet of growing up—“straight up maturation, straight-up ego development.”In fact, what Gabe calls Diane's “experiment” is nothing less than evolving the 2,500-year-old tradition of Zen, preserving and innovating, holding on to the wisdom, power, and grace of the tradition while bringing in the contributions of the West: psychology, shadow work, neuroscience, emotional development, and stage-appropriate interpersonal skills. Also, how to make sense of power dynamics, work with authority, and allow being pushed out of our comfort zone. A testament to Diane and Gabe's own inner work, this groundbreaking conversation is inspiring and impactful, punctuated with deep, personal, experiential wisdom from both guests that speaks directly to how we can best wake up, grow up, and show up in this challenging world of ours. Discernment is Not a Solo Mission: John Lewis on Forming Christian Communities

What if the early church wasn't built primarily on teaching ideas—but on forming people together in the way of Jesus? In this episode, Martha Tatarnic talks with Dr. John Lewis about his book Discernment in the Early Church and Today and what we've misunderstood about the Apostle Paul. Drawing from deep study of Paul's writings and decades of practical ministry, Lewis challenges the tendency to treat Paul as a systematic theologian rather than a pastor forming communities of lived faith. The conversation explores how early Christian communities were shaped through shared practices of discernment, where ordinary life events became the setting for discovering how Christ is at work. Rather than focusing primarily on belief or abstract theology, Paul's aim was to form people over time—individually and communally—into the image of Jesus. They also discuss how this model translates today through small group discernment practices, the role of Scripture in shaping imagination rather than prescribing answers, and why this approach may be especially important in a time of political tension, institutional distrust, and spiritual fragmentation.   Together they explore: Why Paul was more pastor than systematic theologian How early Christian communities practiced discernment together The role of experience in forming faith—not just belief How small groups cultivate trust, vulnerability, and formation Why Scripture shapes imagination rather than giving simple answers Navigating politics and cultural tension through a Christ-centered lens Practical ways churches can recover communal discernment today   John Lewis is Theologian in Residence for the Iona Collaborative at Seminary of the Southwest (Austin, Texas), where he teaches online and in-person continuing education courses in New Testament and congregational leadership. He previously served as the seminary's Director of the Iona Collaborative and Lecturer in New Testament and Spirituality (2016-21). John is also Co-Director of St. Benedict's Workshop (San Antonio, Texas), a non-profit ministry he founded in 2001 to help Christian communities use Scripture to practice discipleship and discernment in all areas of daily life. Lewis is the author of Discernment in the Early Church and Today: Reclaiming Paul's Vision for Formation and Community Building (Seabury Press, 2025) and Looking for Life: The Role of “Theo-Ethical Reasoning” in Paul's Religion (T&T Clark [Continuum], 2005). He holds a Doctor of Philosophy in New Testament degree from the University of Oxford (2004) and a Master of Divinity degree, with honors, from Virginia Theological Seminary (1997). Prior to his ordination in The Episcopal Church (1997), John was a trial lawyer in San Antonio, Texas.   Mentioned Resources:

This week the HortWeek Podcast welcomes Helen Waddington from Perennial and Creepers' head of horticulture, Michael Buck.As the first port of call for horticulturists needing extra support, horticulture charity Perennial is on the front line when it comes to gauging the mental health of the sector as a whole. With an estimated one in five people suffering from a common mental health disorder, Helen Waddington says the most common issue they hear on the Perennial helpline is related to the "cost of living". Ostensibly a financial issue, this in itself will cause stress, but it can have a knock-on effect on relationships (queries for this a have shot up by 93% she says), causing further stress, poor sleep, all of which can impact on work. "The longer this goes on without seeking help it impacts so much more on people".Michael Buck received a diagnoses of depression in 2021, "one of the hardest things" he has had to confront. He describes his experience of depression which had been building in him for many years, and the difficult decision he made, at a time of feeling great vulnerability, to seek help - "that was really tough, but that has really opened my mind to bettering yourself, understanding yourself as well".He talks about the professional stresses that have contributed to poor mental health including damage to plant imports at the border, the huge extra work generated by resulting mixed loads, negotiating with other nurseries to disentangle complex problems that can take hours or days to resolve. They talk about the importance of paying attention to the symptoms, not diminishing them, and the benefit of seeking help in good time, before more serious mental health problems can take hold. For some "pushing through" is seen as a "badge of honour" and often it feels an impossible to take time off work. For self-employed workers where "if you don't work you don't get paid" Waddington says Perennial can offer advice and support, sometimes financial."For somebody who's employed... you are better to say something to your manager about how you are feeling and they will probably give you a 'welfare day' or a 'sofa day'. For those who feel vulnerable in their role, Waddington's advice is "talk to your GP, get signed off - but you can take a signed off week without even going to the doctor's, people sometimes forget that - and get that support."Addressing the issue from the other side, Buck gives advice to employers on how to engender a "culture" within your business that can support employees: "You are only as good as the culture you foster".He says: "I've been in horticulture 20 years now, I've seen a lot and in the early days people would just [say] 'man up'...you didn't want to say anything because if anything goes wrong I'm the first to go because I'm seen as the weak link."Where that shift has gone to the positive people will see through that and see the talent and everything that you bring." He talks about the "open door" approach and culture of trust at Creepers that is not just helpful to staff, but is good for staff retention. For those interested in improving their understanding and handling of mental health issues in the workplace, Perennial has a Mental Health First Aiders programme with ambassdors network meetings where they share "top tips". Waddington shares some of the tips and initiatives that have worked for different businesses.Waddington outlines the signs to look for that someone you work with might be struggling with their mental health. And she talks about Perennial's presence at peak-stress events like RHS Chelsea Flower Show where they are on hand to offer support "when they're spinning the whole John Lewis crockery department!"Finally the group discuss how to handle another major source of stress, social media, and share they ways they manage stress in their own lives. Austin Julio Broughton discovered his gift for public speaking at just eight years old, when he was selected to memorize and deliver a portion of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s “I Have a Dream” speech. What began as a childhood imitation quickly became a lifelong calling. From that first performance to the present day, he has continued delivering Dr. King's words, developing a voice rooted in conviction, cadence, and moral clarity. Over the years, Austin has spoken at significant venues and alongside prominent leaders. He has addressed audiences at the Georgia National Cemetery alongside Governor Nathan Deal, worked for U.S. Congressman Phil Gingrey, and shared stages with figures such as Andrew Young and John Lewis. He has spoken multiple times at The King Center and alongside members of Dr. King's family, building a reputation for principled rhetoric grounded in history, faith, and civic responsibility. Today, Austin is widely known for his appearances on Jubilee's Surrounded and Roundtable series, where he has debated high-profile public figures including Amanda Seales and Cenk Uygur. His work centers on speaking truth to power within politics and public discourse. Identifying as a Christian populist, he challenges both Republican and Democratic establishments alike, arguing that truth—though often inconvenient—is more necessary than the preservation of any political party. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes James DiEugenio. Classified as White Man, DiEugenio is one of the most respected John F. Kennedy assassination researchers in the world. He's testified before Congress, authored a number critically acclaimed books on the murder and appeared in numerous documentaries and television programs. His brand new book, The JFK Assassination Chokeholds: That Inescapably Prove There Was a Conspiracy, examines how more than a half century of deliberate lies have kept the world ignorant and confused about the 1963 assassination of Pres. Kennedy. We'll explore how powerful White people who maintain the Global System of White Supremacy were at the center of the assassinations of the Congo's Patrice Lumumba, Pres. Kennedy, Minister Malcolm X, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Specifically, we'll ask Mr. DeEugenio if the evidence shows that powerful White Supremacists conspired to killed Kennedy and then labored tirelessly to cover their coup. We'll also discuss the recent release of thousands of documents pertaining to theses murders. Many black members of Congress were reluctant to pursue a records release pertaining the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. out of fear that it may unleash material suggesting Dr. King's extramarital affairs. Gus T. thought JFK was “stepping out too,” but he's still learning. Importantly, Mr. DiEugenio became very defensive when Gus T. refused to acknowledge JFK as a "good White Man" who was not Racist. The C.O.W.S. has interviewed Dr. Kenneth O'Reilly three times, and he explain that Pres. Kennedy authorized and acknowledged the FBI's COINTELPRO operation to snoop on and neutralize black people. JFK even called the late Congressman John Lewis a "son of a bitch." This is the sort of speech and action one expects from a Racist. DiEugenio interrupted and hollered that Kennedy was the only White Man to support the 1963 March on Washington. Gus T. reminded everyone that Minister Malcolm X concluded the Kennedy's invaded, diluted the march just like white milk weakens coffee. #NixonsPiano #COINTELPRO #TheCOWS17Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE 564943#

Eight out of nine people writing the U.S. dietary guidelines had ties to Big Meat and Big Dairy. Hmm. So what does that mean for the nutrition advice we're all supposed to trust? I asked a doctor to break it down. And why is cheese so hard to quit?Spoiler alert: it might not be your willpower. There's actual biology behind it. You know how much I love talking to doctors who are plant-based, and today's guest is bringing the receipts. Dr. John Lewis is a plant-powered physician, former associate professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and a researcher who has published more than 180 scientific papers. His Alzheimer's research has shown significant improvements in cognitive function using plant-derived nutrients that support the brain. If you've ever wondered whether Alzheimer's is inevitable… or whether what's on your plate could actually help protect your brain… this episode will change the way you think about food. • The real reason cheese is so addictive (and why quitting it feels impossible for many people)• The massive fiber crisis in America and why it's wrecking gut health• Why the carnivore, keto, and high-protein craze may be setting people up for long-term health problems• The simple dietary shifts that can dramatically improve digestion and inflammation• What actually happens inside your body during fasting and why it may activate powerful cellular repair• The plant foods that may help support memory and brain health Some of what you'll hear may sound shocking. Former President Barack Obama has a tendency to turn funeral eulogies into political messages. It's not just Obama either. The Democrat party as a whole tends to attack President Donald Trump and promote Democratic policy positions whenever there's an opportunity, explains Victor Davis Hanson in today's episode of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words.” “The Democrats have a long history of using the venue of the funeral memorial service to hijack it and use it for political purposes… In 2002, they did that with the late Sen. Paul Wellstone.
