It's 1990. A young staff economist walks into a director's office at the World Bank and says the number he's about to publish is "crazy". The director tells him not to worry about it. The number was the dollar-a-day poverty line. Lant Pritchett, now of LSE, was that economist. More than three decades later, he's still worrying about it. In this week's episode he argues that the dollar-a-day line warped how the world thinks about poverty, by setting the bar so low that we can count billions of deprived people as not poor.In a new paper, co-authored with Martina Viarengo (Graduate Institute, Geneva), their fix isn't to scrap the low line. It's to add a high one as well. They propose a global upper-bound poverty line of $21.50 a day, ten times the extreme-poverty standard, derived from four separate measures of material wellbeing.Above it, you're no longer poor by any reasonable global standard. Below it, you're poor in a sense worth measuring. By that standard, 99% of Pakistan is poor, and almost no one in Denmark is. Her research spans public policy, labour markets, comparative education, and international migration.Research cited in this episodeThe dollar-a-day poverty line. Created for the World Bank's 1990 World Development Report on poverty and based on the observation that national poverty lines in the poorest countries clustered at a low floor (Ravallion, Datt and van de Walle 1991). Updated for inflation, it now sits at P$2.15 a day in 2017 purchasing power parity. It was only ever meant to mark the lowest a global poverty line could plausibly be, not the line.The focus axiom. A standard property of poverty measures, originating with Amartya Sen (1976), under which changes in the income of anyone above the poverty line do not register in the measure. Pritchett's objection is that this assigns mathematically zero weight to the near-poor; a household just above the line counts the same as a Danish millionaire, namely zero. He calls it an economic bug that became a political feature, because it takes global redistribution off the table.Gresham's law applied to poverty. Pritchett's framing for how the simple headcount displaced richer, distribution-sensitive approaches; bad economics drove out better economics because it was easier to understand. He notes the World Bank of the 1970s was preoccupied with distribution, citing Hollis Chenery and Montek Ahluwalia's Redistribution with Growth (1974), so the idea that economists ignored distribution until poverty measurement arrived is a myth.The two criteria for an upper bound. The proposed line rests on two ideas drawn from the tension between the focus axiom and standard welfare economics. One, material wellbeing achievement; the line sits where a household reaches a standard of living a rich-country citizen would recognise as adequate. Two, near enough satiation; the line sits where the extra wellbeing from another dollar has fallen so low that treating further gains as zero does little violence to reality. At twenty-one and a half dollars the marginal utility of income is roughly three percent of its value at the dollar-a-day line; at the World Bank's current high line of P$6.85 it is still around thirty percent.Four measures of wellbeing. The number is triangulated across an iso-elastic utility function, food shares in consumption (Engel's Law), a household index of six basic conditions drawn from Demographic and Health Survey data, and a cross-national index of basics. The estimates cluster between twenty and forty dollars a day; twenty-one and a half was chosen because it is exactly ten times the dollar-a-day line, a focal point in the same way one dollar was.The six minimal conditions of prosperity. Electricity, improved sanitation, safe water, primary schooling completed by older children, no child dying under five, and no young child malnourished. The test Pritchett applies is whether it would be absurd to call a household prosperous while it lacks one of them.The rich of the poor and the poor of the rich. The tenth percentile in Denmark has higher consumption than the ninetieth percentile in Pakistan or Indonesia. This is why any global line that produces meaningful poverty in rich countries implies poverty rates near one hundred percent across most of the developing world; a point Dani Rodrik (2007) showed is widely misunderstood.The prosperity gap. A distribution-sensitive welfare measure adopted by the World Bank (Kraay et al. 2025) that weights the whole income distribution rather than counting everyone above a threshold as zero. Von Ghetto-Slang, Gartenfrust und einem Gerichts-Drama voller Logiklöcher Von Ghetto-Begrüßungen über Nerd-Hochzeiten bis hin zu einem Film, der die Jungs (leider) fassungslos zurücklässt! Die Folge beginnt mit einem kleinen sprachlichen Fehlstart: Zeljko versucht sich an Jugend-Slang ("Was geht, Brudi?"). Nachdem das geklärt ist, schüttet Timo sein Herz über seinen Rasen aus. Tipps von Garten-Experten aus der Zuhörerschaft sind hochwillkommen! Besser lief es da auf einer Nerd-Hochzeit am Wochenende, die komplett im Herr der Ringe- und Franchise-Thema (Einzugsmusik: Concerning Hobbits!) gehalten war. Danach tauchen die beiden in ihre zuletzt gesehenen Filme ein. Zeljko hat Red Rooms (2023) für ein Rewatch mit Freunden aus dem Hut gezaubert. Obwohl es kein blutiger Film ist, saß das Unbehagen bei allen Beteiligten tief – ein echter "Downer", den man sich auch beim zweiten Mal kaum entziehen kann. Timo hat sich derweil dem Animationsfilm Hoppers gewidmet. Ein junges Mädchen, das per Bewusstseinsübertragung in einen Biber-Roboter schlüpft, um einen See zu retten. Ein klassischer Pixar-Film mit Avatar-Anleihen, der gut unterhält, aber für Timo nicht an die Glanzzeiten des Studios (wie WALL-E oder Up) heranreicht. Zeljko war außerdem emotional völlig ergriffen von Aftersun. Das ruhige Drama über eine Vater-Tochter-Beziehung im Türkei-Urlaub entfaltete für ihn durch seine subtile Erzählweise und die starken schauspielerischen Leistungen (besonders von Paul Mescal) eine unglaubliche Tiefe. Timo, der den Film schon länger kennt, merkt an, dass der Film für ihn einen noch krasseren Impact gehabt hätte, wenn die unterschwellige Thematik (Depression) klarer aufgelöst worden wäre. Der Film der Woche ist das auf wahren Begebenheiten beruhende Justizdrama Nürnberg. Und hier sind sich Timo und Zeljko leider komplett einig: Der Film war eine massive Enttäuschung. Im Zentrum steht nicht der Nürnberger Prozess an sich, sondern das psychologische Duell zwischen dem US-Psychiater Douglas Kelley (Rami Malek) und Hermann Göring (Russell Crowe). Das Hauptproblem für Timo: Das gebrochene, katastrophale Deutsch von Russell Crowe und anderen Hauptdarstellern, das die Immersion völlig zerstört. Zudem ärgert er sich über historische Ungenauigkeiten. Auch Zeljko kritisiert die "Marvel-eske" Inszenierung, die dem ernsten Thema nicht gerecht wird, und empfiehlt lieber Klassiker wie Der Untergang oder Zone of Interest. Einzig positiv: Der Film hat Timo dazu animiert, sich im Anschluss noch einmal tief in die echten historischen Fakten und Originalaufnahmen der Prozesse einzuarbeiten. Eine Folge voller Alltags-Anekdoten, emotionaler Indie-Perlen und einem historischen Drama, das sein Potenzial leider völlig verschenkt hat. And WALL-E is in fact pulling double duty on this one, because we get a heartwarming story about robots who fall in love despite their differing classes and stations, and having to defy their employees in order to not only be happy but bring Earth back to life again... AND we get an unexpected sledgehammer of a glimpse into the future from 2008. It was as though Andrew Stanton and Pixar saw how easily Social Media would take hold of us as a species, and cater to our every dopamine whim in order to keep our attention, as we sacrificed everything about ourselves for the sake of convenience, including but not limited to complacency over ecological disaster. AI Twins and the Future of Research The Experience Strategy Podcast Episode Overview Two Wall Street Journal articles are making waves in the market research world — one asking whether AI can replace human research participants, and another profiling a teenage-founded startup called Aura that's already attracted McDonald's and EY. Dave, Joe, and Aransas bring their combined decades of consumer research experience to the question everyone in insights is quietly asking: is this the end of primary research, or the beginning of something more powerful? What We Cover The two WSJ articles at the center of this conversation The first covers Simile, a startup building agentic AI twins modeled on real people for polling and market research. The second profiles Aura, a company founded by people younger than Aransas's high schooler, betting that AI bots can predict human behavior better than humans themselves. Dave's evolving reaction — Worry, skepticism, and then possibility His first instinct was worry. Stone Mantel has built its practice on deep consumer research, and the promise of AI twins that can answer with 0.5% accuracy at first felt wrong. But the more he sat with it, the more he saw a useful analogy: flight simulators. Simulators serve a real purpose as long as everyone is clear they are not the same as flying the actual plane. The critical flaw in current AI twin models Both Dave and Joe land on the same problem independently: AI twins are built on static preferences and demographic profiles. They treat people as if behavior is fixed — "this is how soccer moms respond" — when the entire premise of situational research is that behavior shifts with context. What mode is the person in? What situation are they navigating? Those questions are not being asked. Joe puts it plainly: they didn't ask anything about modes. Where AI twins might actually work well Trend prediction and aggregate market analysis are reasonable use cases. If you want to know whether fruit-flavored tea is about to have a moment, AI models scanning historical purchasing data and cultural signals can probably get you there. The harder problem — and the more valuable one — is understanding what a specific person cares about in a specific moment, and that requires something current AI twins are not equipped to provide. What AI twins could become with better design Dave raises an intriguing possibility: after completing primary research with a real consumer, could that data become the seed for ongoing simulation and modeling? Not as a replacement for the research, but as a way to extend its value across time and decisions. He also flags the bias risk — every feedback loop that improves AI accuracy may also drift it further from the original human signal. Joe's Wall-E scenario The Terminator isn't Joe's fear. Wall-E is. Personal language models hanging out in your Alexa, learning everything you say and do, eventually making purchasing decisions on your behalf — and research shifting to focus on the PLM rather than the person. The consent problem CBS claimed 400,000 people opted in to being replicated as AI twins. Aransas is skeptical — and direct. That was some very fine print. Companies building AI twin programs need to be serious about how they are collecting this data, not just technically compliant. Key Idea If AI can actually predict behavior change, it is no longer a tool — it is strategy. That quote, attributed to a Coca-Cola executive in the second article, captures what is at stake. Dave frames it through the lens of superpowers: AI gives companies the ability to do things they could not do otherwise. The question is whether the thing they are doing actually reflects how real humans behave. Axel Geddes ACE, Tony Greenberg, Chloe Kloezeman, Geoff Sledge, Ayesha Johannes The Hoppers editing team of Axel, Tony, Chloe, Geoff and Ayesha understand better than anyone, that in the world of animation, creating a captivating film involves more than just drawing and animating characters. It requires a deep understanding of storytelling, editing, and collaboration.  Not to mention the occasional party in the cutting room. Hoppers follows a young woman named Mabel Tanaka, an animal lover whose mind is transferred into a lifelike robotic beaver, allowing her to communicate with animals and save their habitat from human destruction, while inadvertently starting an uprising in doing so.   AXEL GEDDES, ACE Axel Geddes joined Pixar Animation Studios in February 1999 as an assistant editor on the Academy Award®-nominated feature "Toy Story 2." Geddes went on to work as a second assistant editor on "Monsters, Inc.," first assistant editor on Oscar®-winner "Finding Nemo" and second film editor on Oscar®-winning feature film "WALL•E."  He continued as a lead editor on two Toy Story Toons, the studio's Halloween television special "Toy Story of TERROR!" and "Finding Dory." He more recently served as Editor on the Academy AwardÆ-winning film "Toy Story 4," in addition to working on Pixar's "Lightyear." Geddes recently completed cutting Pixar's latest feature "Hoppers". Geddes was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. He studied filmmaking with an emphasis on editing at The Academy of Art University in San Francisco. He resides in the East Bay with his wife and their three children. TONY GREENBERG Anthony Greenberg (call him Tony) joined Pixar in 2002 as a Second Assistant Editor for The First Incredibles. His subsequent credits include serving as First Assistant Editor on WALL•E, and Second Editor on both The Good Dinosaur and Incredibles 2. Most recently, he served as the Lead Editor for Lightyear and as a Second Editor for Hoppers. Prior to his time at Pixar, Tony began his career as an Intern at Industrial Light & Magic, where he eventually rose to the position of Assistant VFX Editor. CHLOE KLOEZEMAN Chloé Kloezeman was hired as a temporary assistant editor in 2012 for the TV special, Toy Story of Terror. What was supposed to be 3 months turned into 14 years, and she's hoping that no one has noticed. She has Second Assistant Editor credits on Finding Dory, Coco, Toy Story 4 (and said TV Special), and two credits as a Second Editor (Lightyear and the new Hoppers). Working on Hoppers has been a highlight of her career. Kloezeman was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area and is a UC Berkeley graduate. She lives in Oakland with her partner and two kids. GEOFF SLEDGE Geoffrey Sledge previously worked on live action features in New York, mainland China and Hong Kong. After returning to the States, he started at Pixar in 2013, first as an assistant on Coco. He transitioned into the Second Editor role while working on Hoppers. AYESHA JOHANNES Ayesha Johannes joined Pixar in the spring of 2016 as an Editorial Intern on Cars3. She then went on to become a second assistant editor on Luca and then Lightyear.  She also worked as an assistant editor on two spark shorts at Pixar, PURL and LOOP. On Hoppers she was promoted to a first assistant editor and it has been her most favorite time at Pixar so far. Prior to her time at Pixar, Ayesha studied at the Academy of Art University and while there worked with a director on a Filipino short film called Christmas Bonus. She was born and raised in Mumbai, India and now lives in Oakland, California with her family.
