Apple had a rare quarter where it missed its revenue target due to problems in the supply chain and manufacturing.
Apple Inc. is warning customers they'll have to wait longer to get its latest iPhone models after anti-virus restrictions were imposed on a contractor's factory in central China. The company announcement gave no details but said the factory operated by Foxconn in the central city of Zhengzhou is “operating at significantly reduced capacity.” “We now expect lower iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max shipments than we previously anticipated,” the company said. “Customers will experience longer wait times to receive their new products.” Foxconn Technology Group said it imposed anti-virus measures on the factory in Zhengzhou following virus outbreaks. Apple and Foxconn previously hadn't responded to questions about how iPhone production might be affected. Access to the industrial zone where the factory is located was suspended for one week following a surge in infections in Zhengzhou and the departure of workers from the factory. The lockdown is expected to cause further disruptions to the plant, which in recent weeks has seen a spate of coronavirus infections and an exodus of workers, some of whom fled the factory on foot. Foxconn said in a statement that it is revising its outlook for this quarter downward due to the lockdown. “Foxconn is now working with the government in a concerted effort to stamp out the pandemic and resume production to its full capacity as quickly as possible,” the company said. It also said that the provincial government has said it will “fully support” Foxconn in managing the plant's pandemic prevention and operation situation. In a post on the Zhengzhou plant's WeChat social media account, the company said a “closed loop” system would restrict its employees' travel between their dormitories and the factory area to manage risks of COVID-19 transmission. The last quarter of the year is typically a busy season for companies like Foxconn as they ramp up production ahead of the end-of-year holiday rush. “We are working closely with our supplier to return to normal production levels while ensuring the health and safety of every worker,” Apple said. This article was provided by The Associated Press.
"Foxconn: iPhone maker bets on electric truck firm Lordstown Motors Foxconn, which makes iPhones for Apple, says it is deepening its investment in a US electric pick-up truck firm, which could challenge Tesla's Cybertruck. The technology giant is spending up to $170m (£147.8m) on shares in the loss-making start-up Lordstown Motors. The major cash injection comes as the company aims to ramp up production of its debut model, the Endurance. Lordstown recently began building the vehicle at a former General Motors plant in the US state of Ohio. Under the deal, the world's largest contract manufacturer of electronics bought a more than 18% stake in Lordstown, making it the largest investor in the company. Apple iPhones delayed over China Covid lockdown UK battery firm averts collapse as funding secured Mini move to China unfortunate, minister says ""Since announcing our first transaction with Foxconn more than a year ago, it has been our objective to develop a broad strategic partnership that leverages the capabilities of both companies,"" Lordstown's executive chairman Daniel Ninivaggi said. ""Foxconn's latest investment is another step in that direction,"" he added. The two companies also said they would jointly develop an electric vehicle together, although they did not give further details of the plan. The tie-up came after the world's biggest electric carmaker Tesla, which is owned by multi-billionaire Elon Musk, was earlier this month reported by the Reuters news agency to be planning to start mass production of its Cybertruck at the end of 2023. That would be two years after the original target for the highly-anticipated pick-up truck that Mr Musk unveiled in 2019. Taiwan-based Foxconn's investment is the latest cash injection into Lordstown as it continues to run at a loss. Separately on Monday, figures for the three months to the end of September showed a net loss of $154.4m, wider than the $95.8m loss the company reported for the same time last year. Shares in Lordstown rose by almost 18% in extended trading in New York after the announcements. Last week Foxconn agreed a deal with Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund to produce electric vehicles in the kingdom. The joint venture will operate under the brand name Ceer, which sounds like the Arabic word for ""drive"". Ceer will license technology from Germany's BMW and aims to start selling its electric vehicles from 2025. The deal is part of Saudi Arabia's push to move its economy away from its dependence on fossil fuels. Last month Foxconn's chairman Liu Young-way said he hopes the company will one day make cars for Tesla as it ramps up electric vehicle manufacturing operation. Speaking at the company's annual Tech Day, he said the firm aimed to replicate its success in manufacturing consumer devices as it expands into making electric vehicles for major motor industry brands. https://www.bbc.com/news/business-63551439?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Bgnl.newsletters%5D-%5Bheadline%5D-%5Bnews%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D&xtor=ES-213-[BBC%20News%20Newsletter]-2022November8-[top+news+stories] " "#TheMummicogblogOfMalta Amazon Top and Flash Deals(Affiliate Link - You will support our translations if you purchase through the following link) - https://amzn.to/3CqsdJH Compare all the top travel sites in just one search to find the best hotel deals at HotelsCombined - awarded world's best hotel price comparison site. Gretchen Walker gave advice on creating a BLE iOS application. Gretchen wrote The Ultimate Guide to Apple’s Core Bluetooth on the PunchThrough (@PunchThrough) blog. There are many other good posts on the blog about BLE from a device perspective and app development (iOS and Android). PunchThrough also makes LightBlue, a great BLE debugging app you can find wherever you find your mobile apps. PunchThrough is hiring embedded software engineers in the Minneapolis, MN area. Chris and Gretchen both recommend Ray Wenderlich’s site for learning about Swift. Chris also liked the Big Nerd Ranch books: iOS Programming and Swift Programming. Elecia liked the NovelBits.io writeup about getting maximum throughput on BLE. Apple Accessory Design Guide

Gregory Wrightstone, geologist and author of Inconvenient Facts: The Science That Al Gore Doesn't Want You To Know, launched the Inconvenient Facts app and all was going well until Apple decided to drop the smartphone application from it’s App Store. Why would Apple do this after it had generated thousands of downloads and provided rigorously documented facts on an important topic? Hint: Al Gore is on Apple's board of directors. As Venezuela endured one of its worst blackouts in recent memory this week, the government claimed the widespread outage of power, phone and internet were due to a foreign cyber attack attempting to unseat Maduro. Mike Daugherty, CEO of LabMD and author of The Devil Inside the Beltway: The Shocking Expose of the US Government's Surveillance and Overreach Into Cyber-security, Medicine and Small Business, will join me.

Dubai: Apple's latest financial statement, released on Tuesday night, outlined a tough environment for the tech giant: Last year saw sales slow across global markets, even while the Americas grew. The slowdown was largely caused by emerging market currency devaluations, according to CEO Tim Cook, making the company's already-expensive phones that much more pricey. In response to this, Apple says it will absorb that margin, keeping the prices of its devices at a more affordable level in places like China and Japan. But Apple's strategy to continue growing goes beyond price control: The company recently unveiled a new public programme of free classes that will be held at every Apple store around the world. The move will solidify the firm's spot as one of the most successful retailers in the world, while Apple hopes it'll introduce a whole new generation of users to its products. On today's episode, we discuss the merits of this strategy, what we can glean from Apple's financial results this week, and what the future is for one of the world's richest companies. Meanwhile, Ed shares some details from his trip to Cupertino last week, where he went to visit Apple at its secretive new headquarters there...

In the latest episode of the Apple v Qualcomm battle, the Cupertino-based company’s COO, Jeff Williams, said the chipmaker refused to supply modems for the new iPhones – a move that could drastically affect the network performance of the upcoming range of Apple’s handsets. As per CNET’s report, the Apple exec said this during the US Federal Trade Commission’s trial against Qualcomm on Monday. Qualcomm is still providing chips for the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus. But the chipmaker has allegedly refused to provide components for Apple’s latest iPhones, since the latter sued Qualcomm for $1 billion over shady business practices. Speaking at the US Federal Trade Commission’s trial against Qualcomm on Monday, Williams added that Qualcomm‘s royalty fee of $7.50 per iPhone is too high – it’s five times more than what the company intended to pay. Apple has traditionally sourced components from multiple suppliers. And the company intended to continue that trend last year as well. “The strategy was to dual-source in 2018 as well. We were working toward doing that with Qualcomm, but in the end, they would not support us or sell us chips,” Williams said. This tiff with Qualcomm might also impact Apple’s plans of launching a 5G-enabled phone. Many major phone makers like Samsung and LG have already revealed their plans to 5G-enabled devices this year using Qualcomm’s X50 modem. Meanwhile, Apple will have to wait for Intel to release its 5G chips, and this could delay the company’s 5G-ready iPhone. Notably, Intel is likely to release its 5G chips in 2020. It remains to be seen what this will spell for the next iPhone. A bunch of tests from four months ago have shown that Intel modems are considerably slower than those from Qualcomm. Hopefully, Intel and Apple will be able to get their act together so the Qualcomm issue becomes a moot point.
It's a new Quick Bitz edition of the show that I'm trying out. Apple confirms that slightly bent iPad Pro’s right out of the box are normal.
