Barry M. Putt, Jr. beamed into the Playwright's Spotlight from New Jersey to discuss the medium of the audio drama, a throwback and homage to radio plays of the 30s and 40s. We breakdown the differences in elements of traditional playwriting vs the audio drama, i.e., setting up the scene, dialogue, sound effects, music, etc. We also talk about converting plays from stage to audio drama, the process of writing them as well as compensation and the opportunities in that market. We also touch on length, episodic vs feature, beats and silences in the medium, the hiring process for staff writers, popular genres, writing good suspense and character as well as establishing character flaws and adapting from other sources such as dime magazines. We wrap things up by touching on some of the traditional aspects of playwriting. Whether its audio dramas or traditional stage plays, Barry offers insight that I think you will find beneficial, and as always... Enjoy!  Barry M. Putt, Jr.'s plays have been performed in Canada, France, the UAE, and throughout the U.S and his comedy, “A Different Blend of Friendship” won the New Jersey Wordsmiths Award. How to be Happy with Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar In this episode, you'll hear: The elements of happiness and how to be happier The role that rest plays in reducing stress and the importance of exercise as medicine “Perfect” vs. “good enough” and why the ego is stopping us from being happy Advice for when comparison makes you unhappy Today, we are doing a podcast swap with Learn From People Who Lived It, hosted by our co-host, Mathew Blades! You can find the  Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar joins us from his home in New Jersey, where he recently launched the world's first fully accredited master's degree program in happiness at Centenary University. Tal is an expert in the field, having received his BA in Philosophy and Psychology and Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from Harvard. He tells us that, as a young man, his squash training informed his understanding of what it takes to become an expert and excel throughout his life. Tal's dedication to the sport led him to play squash professionally and, eventually, to win the Israeli National Squash Championships. After being injured during his time in the Israeli Army, he left professional sports but was soon recruited to play at the amateur level for Harvard. There, he won the U.S. intercollegiate squash championships and eventually returned to his alma mater to become a lecturer. Tal first began thinking about the nature of happiness when he found that success in Squash was not bringing him happiness. Years later, the same realization came to him again when he found that success academically and socially in college was not causing him to feel happy either. This situation made Tal do the unthinkable… leave his computer science program and move to philosophy and psychology. He had to figure out, “Why aren't I happy? And how can I become happier?" This move kicked off what would become an incredible career and a lifelong dedication to studying the science of happiness.  Dr. Tal has become an accomplished writer, with his books on positive psychology and leadership being translated into more than thirty languages and appearing on best-seller lists around the world. In addition to what Tal has achieved at Harvard, he has also taught happiness studies at Columbia University, consulted and lectured for companies like Microsoft, Intel, and Google, and given expert interviews on programs like NPR and Armchair Expert. Throughout his career, one thing Tal has found to be true is that success has nothing to do with happiness. Rather, happiness will lead to success. One way we can see this happening is with the “flow state." When you are in the "flow,” you are having “peak experience” and “peak performance." Flowing can make us feel happy, but before we can know if we are happy, Tal tells us it's important to define happiness.  Most people equate happiness with pleasure, but it is so much more than that. Pleasure is one element of happiness, but there are others as well: spiritual well-being (meaning and purpose), physical well-being (exercise, nutrition, and rest), intellectual well-being (curiosity and lifelong learning), relational well-being (time spent with others and impact on our community), and emotional well-being. Emotional well-being is the element that encompasses pleasure but also requires being able to deal with painful emotions. Dr. Tal says, “The first step to happiness is allowing in unhappiness.”. Many of us are missing one or more of these elements. There are billions of people worldwide experiencing burnout, and Dr. Tal tells us this is not due to their being more stressed, but rather that there is not enough rest time to take care of all of these aspects. Oftentimes, people just feel like busyness is just a fact of life. Still, by evaluating what we really want in life and understanding that perfection is not realistic but good enough is good enough, you can change your expectations and, in turn, shift your perspective. There is a time for the highs and a time for the lows, but most of the time, we just need to be neutral. Tal calls embracing and accepting that most of life is neutral, with spikes in the highs and dips into the lows, emotional flexibility. He tells us to “surrender to the emotion." Embrace it. The pandemic is another factor that impacted our happiness. However, one especially alarming trend that Tal has been giving voice to is rising depression rates among teenagers. These recent unprecedented increases are mainly attributed to their widespread use of smartphones. Tal notes that the technology itself isn't the issue, but the lack of boundaries around smartphones is. Technology is radically impacting the self-esteem of men and women, but, to a greater degree, teenage boys and, most radically, teenage girls. Fortunately, Tal has advice on how to do a reality check for our children (and ourselves) when we start comparing our bodies and lives to the ones we see online. Practicing gratitude daily develops an appreciative mindset that will serve us much more than the depreciative mindset so many of us have developed as a result of impossible comparisons. But keep in mind that it's not so much what you say to your children; it's about how you model behavior for them.  This kind of practical and insightful perspective is what Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar's Happiness Studies Academy is all about. The goal is to help individuals become happier themselves and empower them to help others do the same. With a year-long certificate program and a two-year, fully accredited master's degree program, Tal is giving future leaders in the field a way to learn about happiness from multiple perspectives.   Resources Mentioned TalBenShahar.com HappinessStudies.Academy/cihs/   Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar on Instagram Jean Twenge  Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi on Flow Ellen Langer on Mindfulness “The Good Enough Mother" by D. Politics is often described as a tough world to be in, filled with heated debates and difficult conversations. Navigating through these challenging situations can be a daunting task. However, there is a key element that plays a vital role in this process - that is listening. Our guest on the listening SUPERPOWER podcast, Matt Krayton is the Founder of Publitics, a public affairs, political, PR and strategy consultancy. He provides counsel to campaigns, candidates, elected officials, executives, founders, organizations and brands. Most recently, Matt worked with Biden for President on special projects including having helped create the viral "We Just Did" hat and collateral for endorsements including NBA star Ben Simmons. His work on the campaign was recognized with a Campaigns and Elections Magazine Stanley F. Reed Award. He is currently an adjunct professor in Centenary University's Business Department, teaching in their first-of-its-kind social media program. Prior to founding Publitics, Matt worked at Fairleigh Dickinson University's PublicMind Poll and later taught a freshman seminar for political science students and in the Law in the Liberal Arts program as an adjunct instructor. In this episode, Matt sheds light on the importance of listening and digging down deep to break barriers to truly understand what lies beneath the surface. In so doing, one becomes a credible messenger of the message that can help foster effective dialogue and make a meaningful impact. He also shares lessons learned from running his own business, highlighting how active listening enables valuable feedback that contributes to the team's growth and business development. “The strength of any message is built on the ability to understand your audience. " - Matt Krayton Listening SUPERPOWER Notes: 01:22 - Recalling that moment when he realized the power of listening 05:46 - How Matt's choice to listen helped in a heated discussion: It allowed this person to process what they were feeling and see the bigger picture and view me as a credible partner in helping with a communication issue. 09:47 - A client-focused approach that Matt has adopted: The first thing that we do as opposed to offering our take on it is we ask, “What do you think is the problem?” And we listen. 11:52 - Expounding on 'deep canvassing' in listening and its impact on hot topics and potential voters. Also, how this tool could support stakeholder communication.  17:43 - Listening from his point of view: It's both taking things to a new level, and also building a strong enough foundation to stand on while you're having difficult conversations. 18:44 - Scenarios where listening helps make a strong foundation for more opportunities to happen 24:27 - What makes him drawn to challenging work: The most challenging situations are oftentimes the most interesting situations to me. 27:55 - Lessons learned from running his own company that relates to the value of listening 35:40 - What does communication and the work process look like within Matt's team and how does this impact the business culture? 40:33 - Listening as digging down deep: It is understanding that the first thing you hear from someone isn't always the thing that's at the core of what you're trying to get to.  Key Takeaways: "If you think that someone fundamentally cannot understand you, then you're going to have a hard time taking advice from that person because it feels so out of the realm of your experience. That credibility is so important when you're trying to deliver a message." - Matt Krayton "[Listening] It's really just like building that foundation and making sure that's very strong so that you can jump off of it."- Matt Krayton "I've tried to be very transparent about the challenges that I've faced growing as a manager, growing a business. I think that has helped opened the door to feedback solicited and unsolicited from the team."- Matt Krayton "It's not about being right. It's about getting to the right answer."- Matt Krayton "You have to have that humility to know that you're not always going to have the right answer, but you have to be committed to getting to the right answer."- Matt Krayton "Just beneath the surface of whatever presentation, emotionally or from a communications perspective, there's a lot of nuance in how people feel about particular issues. Digging into that is extraordinarily important in being able to break down the barriers that stand between you and whatever endpoint you're looking to get to."- Matt Krayton "If you can be a credible messenger and develop that credibility through listening and empathy, then I think you're going to be in a much better position."- Matt Krayton Connect with Matt Krayton: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mkrayton Website: https://www.publitics.com/  Connect with Raquel Ark:   www.listeningalchemy.com Mobile: + 491732340722 contact@listeningalchemy.com  LinkedIn Podcast email: listeningsuperpower@gmail.com

If happiness is to be had, it must be studied. Tal Ben-Shahar acted on this belief when he created the Master's of Arts in Happiness Studies in partnership with Centenary University, through which students of eighty-five nationalities learn how to achieve well-being and how to impact others' flourishing. In this episode, Tal joins Grant to discuss the study of happiness in an academic setting. They ask: How successful are the liberal arts in teaching students how to be happy? What does religion have to offer in the conversation on happiness? What is the ideal profile for the teacher - or student - of a happiness course? And, is happiness the missing key to uniting the University?

Jordan Toma (@imjustakidwithaniep) loves a good comeback story. Whether it's his own, a student's he connects with during one of his speaking engagements, or even a total stranger's he hears being shared on the social media platform Clubhouse, he just can't help himself from rooting for the underdog. That's because for as long as he can remember, he's been the underdog. As a kid, Jordan was diagnosed as having dyslexia, attention hyper-deficit disorder (ADHD), and an auditory processing disorder, which meant traditional classroom learning was a major challenge for him. So much so that merely the sight of a school bus used to send him spiraling into anxiety attacks. Eventually, he was placed on an individualized educational program (IEP), and after struggling his way through high school, he thought there was no way he was going to college. The tests, the homework, the fact that he was about to graduate high school with a 1.7 GPA… he was convinced he was done with school forever. His mom wasn't, though. To her, there was no way he ~wasn't~ going to college. After being rejected by dozens of colleges and universities, they finally found the right fit – New Jersey's Centenary University. There was only one catch: to enroll, it was mandatory that he'd have to move in early to begin their STEP Ahead program, leaving him only two days of summer. He thought it would be the end of the world. Reflecting upon it in this episode, he believes it's the best thing that could have ever happened to him. Hear Jordan share the story of how the habits he formed during his time at Centenary transformed him into the unstoppable force he is today: from his first job post-grad selling windows door to door and becoming the top salesperson in the company, to passing a series of exams to become a financial advisor and going on to become one of the top producers in the country, to building his real estate portfolio, to becoming a TikToker and keynote speaker and traveling all around the country sharing his story with students. I hope you'll enjoy listening to this episode half as much as we enjoyed making it for you, and if you do, please let us know by dropping a quick rating and a review on Apple Podcasts, and by sharing it on social media or sending it to someone else you think needs to hear Jordan's message!

Welcome to episode 9 of Today is the Day Changemakers, 'The Road to Opportunity.' In this episode my guest is Michael Pizzano. Michael's role at Kindred changed since this episode was recorded. He is now the CEO, Kindred Hospital - South Florida. Michael is also President of the American College of Healthcare Executives in NJ, professor at Centenary  University and Saint Elizabeth University, where he teaches Master of Business Administration and Healthcare Administration courses.  Michael loves being able to take the teaching outside of the book by sharing his first-hand experience. Michael spend some time figuring out where his career path would take him.  At one point he was heading towards becoming a U.S. Marshall, but  another opportunity as a part time EMT led him in another direction. There was a day in Michael's career that changed his life. The organization that he was working for where he felt he had great job let him go. It was a shock. He wrote an incredible recap of the events that happened that day titled 'My Long Walk Home'. It has been read by people across the country and beyond. You can find 'My Long Walk Home' on Michael's LinkedIn page. Michael's family, friends, network, and sphere of influence all supported him during this time.  It is a great example of the importance of reaching out, connecting and leaning on those around us to help lift us up when we have our vulnerable moments.  Michael went from unemployed in 2013 to becoming a first time CEO in 2015. The message here is, things happen for a reason. We may not know what the reason is at the time, but it may show up quicker than you think!  During this interview, Jodi shares something that her Dad taught her as a leader. He said, "be careful how you treat someone when you are responsible for the way they eat." It is about respect and the understanding of what you are responsible for when you are leading a team or company. Network, network, network! When networking you are growing your personal  support team, gaining advice from others in and outside your industry, possibly find new job opportunities, and so much more. Mentorship is so important. This is a topic that is an ongoing theme on this podcast and Michael feels strongly about this topic as well.  Michael is a mentor to so many, as well as, officially being a mentor to a Penn State student for a couple of months every year. "Control what you can control", is something that a great leader told Michael.  Seems simple, right? However, there are many times we may try to control it all. When trying to control everything it can lead us to put way too much pressure on ourselves, and spend too much time paying attention to things we are not able to change. Take note of what great leaders are saying to you and write them down. Listen to Michael's "why not, my job" message. There is an important lesson in this message. We may not always give ourselves enough credit, so we may not be reaching for all that we deserve.  Do we have to make a stop at every wrung on the ladder as we climb? Can we miss a few to get to the top? Why not? Thank you to Michael Pizzano for sharing his story and his time. Go to Michael's LinkedIn page and read his incredible ' My Long Walk Home' story. Congratulations to Michael for his new position at Kindred Hospital. Since this interview Michael became CEO of a Kindred Hospital for the second time! Next week we have something very special planned for our listeners. Our new Inspire Series! We will have a double episode launch with Dennis Budinich, Chief Culture Officer, Investors Bank and Rob Scheer, Founder, Comfort Cases, author of A Forever Family: Fostering Change One Child at a time, and 2018 CNN Hero.  Hope you will listen in!

A little over two years ago, in June 2017, Dr. Kenneth Hoyt did a podcast with us about his work with higher education institutions that needed, or wanted, to change. We had previously worked with Ken when he was president of Centenary University from 2002 to 2009 when he turned around the institution, dramatically increasing enrollment from 1,600 students to 3,300. How did he do this? By better understanding and improving retention rates and expanding into non-traditional, adult, online and graduate programs. It was Ken's mastery of the power of data that enabled him to provide the insights needed to better recruit potential college students while adapting Centenary's curricula to their needs. Are you in need of a turnaround? Listen and learn! It was this same understanding of the power of data that led Dr. Hoyt to found The Higher Education Practice. In our 2nd podcast, we asked him to talk about the work he has been doing with higher education institutions, especially regarding the three-year project he recently completed with the Association of Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities (AIKCU). This podcast is important because Ken discusses how he engaged with these colleges and universities to get them to capture and analyze their data, and then own the results so they could transform their institutions and better serve their students. You can read the analysis of Ken's work, “Optimizing Academic Balance (OAB): Mission, Quality, Market Potential, Cost, and Revenue,” here.  Of particular interest to us at SAMC and the work we do in higher education: Dr. Hoyt looks for the Key Performance Indicators on which a college should be focusing. All too often, institutions are not looking at the right data. They are focused on enrollment and retention but are unaware of how their own data can help them better attract, and retain, students. He successfully got the independent colleges in Kentucky to see the benefit of cross-institutional analysis. As anthropologists, we also look across institutions, and even industries, to better understand which model works best in which setting. He also helps organizations disrupt the myths which they have always held to be true, even when the facts are neither supportive of those myths nor trusted to change them. At one college he worked with, the administration was certain that minority students performed poorly when compared to (white) majority students. The facts said the opposite. The administration also thought that residential students did better than commuters. Wrong again.  SAMC helps organizations "see, feel and think" differently There is so much information, along with exceptional insights, awaiting college leadership that wants to see things with fresh eyes. It really is all around them, if only they could see it. At SAMC, that's what we're all about: helping clients see things through a new lens, with fresh eyes. About Ken Hoyt The founding principal of The Higher Education Practice, Dr. Kenneth L. Hoyt is in the midst of a distinguished 30-year higher education career. He has served as president of Centenary University in Hackettstown, New Jersey, president of The Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges, Inc. (OFIC), vice president for The University of Akron, and in various campaign/fundraising leadership positions for Otterbein College and Baldwin-Wallace College. Dr. Hoyt holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration and Leadership from Ohio University, an M.A. in Journalism/PR from Ohio State University, and a B.A. in Business Administration/ Marketing from Baldwin-Wallace College. During his seven years at Centenary University, he transformed the institution, implementing a collaborative strategic planning model that led to unprecedented enrollment growth in the university's traditional, non-traditional/adult, online and graduate programs. Recently, Centenary was recognized by Intel as one of the top 50 wireless universities in the U.S. for its wireless IBM laptop campus.  To learn more about what's ahead for higher ed, check out these blogs and podcasts  What Makes Arizona State University the Most Innovative College in the US?
