Brad Roberts, the unmistakable baritone behind Crash Test Dummies, is one of the most unique vocalists in alternative rock history. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Roberts initially pursued literature and philosophy before turning to music full-time. His deep, resonant voice became the centerpiece of the band's sound—so distinctive that it set them apart immediately. What started as a small Canadian folk-rock group evolved into a global sensation, largely thanks to Roberts' offbeat lyricism and unorthodox delivery.Crash Test Dummies gained international attention in 1993 with their breakthrough album God Shuffled His Feet, which featured the unforgettable single “Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm.” With its oddball characters and haunting melodies, the song struck a strange and perfect chord in pop culture. The album itself, filled with introspective yet whimsical tracks like “Afternoons & Coffeespoons” and “Swimming in Your Ocean,” went triple platinum and earned the band Grammy nominations. The blend of wit, depth, and surrealism set the Dummies apart from their alt-rock peers and earned them a lasting legacy. Now celebrating the 30th anniversary of God Shuffled His Feet, Crash Test Dummies are back on tour, playing to longtime fans and curious newcomers alike. The tour is a celebration not only of that seminal album but of a musical journey that never really stopped. Despite not dominating the charts as they once did, Roberts and company have continued creating music, including recent singles like “Sacred Alphabet” and “Way We Are,” which show that their sense of melody and lyrical oddity is still wonderfully intact. The band's early folk-rock storytelling roots—especially in their debut The Ghosts That Haunt Me—have gradually evolved into an eclectic catalogue that includes elements of gospel, pop, and even Eastern spiritual music. Roberts, who also released a solo mantra album, has always embraced the unexpected. That same spirit fuels the band's new work, which, while quieter in mainstream circles, remains vibrant and artistically rich.Crash Test Dummies continue to prove that thoughtful, quirky, and emotionally resonant music has a home in any era. With Brad Roberts still front and center, the band offers a truly one-of-a-kind experience on stage and in the studio. Fans can find tour dates, merchandise, and new releases on their official website, follow them on Instagram, Facebook, and Spotify to stay connected as they continue their unexpected, enduring journey through the musical landscape.

Hello, our favourite animated friends, and welcome to the show. This week, Óran and Clodagh are just back from Dingle, County Kerry, where they and Larry attended the Animation Dingle Festival. Óran was thrilled because he got to touch the actual models used for the latest Wallace and Gromit movie 'Vengeance Most Fowl'. The film was made in stop-motion animation, which means amongst other things that it took a super-long time to produce. It's a welcome return for Stuart Lawler to the podcast. Stuart flew his private jet over to Anaheim in California to attend CSUN Assistive Tech Conference. What new toys are out there for the VI community? What is accessibility like at the event? Did Stuart fight any fires? How much does a beer cost? And where the hell is Anaheim? All these questions and not a lot more will be answered by the tech guru. Words by Angela CroudaceAfter decades since their last show in Australia, Brad Roberts of Crash Test Dummies is excited to return. The Canadian band's first Australian tour, back in the early 90s, was met with poor attendance as they were relatively unknown at the time. “When we played our first tour in Australia, we were promoting our very first record, Ghosts That Haunt Me. We had a hit in Canada, but hardly anyone knew us there,” Brad recalls. However, the situation has drastically changed, and this time, with a larger fan base, the band is eager for a more successful reception.Reflecting on the impact of God Shuffled His Feet, the album that defined the band's career, Brad shares his pride. “It means a lot to me that God Shuffled His Feet holds such a special place in people's hearts after 30 years,” he says. The album, featuring iconic tracks like Superman's Song, still resonates with fans around the world. The band's success skyrocketed early on, with invitations to perform on Saturday Night Live and The David Letterman Show.Despite the early fame, Brad's musical journey didn't begin until after his university years at the University of Winnipeg. “I didn't spend much time in music until after graduation. Success on the second record was overwhelming,” he admits. The Crash Test Dummies' rise to fame is a testament to their unique sound and Brad's distinct low voice, which became an unexpected asset. The reunion of the original line up in 2017 was a poignant moment for Brad and the band, marking a new chapter in their journey. “We decided we wanted to keep going because we had such a good time,” he reflects. As the band gears up for their upcoming tour, Brad's passion for music remains strong. “I still love touring and playing,” he says. And with the ongoing evolution of music, Brad continues to study classical composition, including the works of Bach, proving that music is a lifelong constant.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

What the Riff!?! delves once again into the great (and not so great) Christmas songs to add a little cheer as you rock around the Christmas tree this year. WSB Radio host Eric Von Haessler joins us for the fun!“The Holly and the Ivy” by Jon AndersonJon Anderson's fourth solo album came out in 1985, and was a mixture of traditional Christmas carols and original material. This is a traditional British folk Christmas carol. Though it can't be traced any further back than the 1800's, the association between holly and Christmas dates back to medieval times.“Please Come Home for Christmas” by the EaglesDon Henley, Glenn Frey, and the rest of the Eagles put out this popular sad Christmas track in 1978, though it was a cover originally performed by blues pianist Charles Brown in 1960, and co-written by Brown and Gene Redd.“The First Noel” by Crash Test DummiesFront man Brad Roberts puts his distinctive bass voice to work on this traditional Christmas tune. This carol originated in Cornwall, England and dates back to at least the early 1800's, using the French "Noel" as a synonym for the Christmas season“The 12 Days of Christmas” by Straight, No ChaserThis acapella group from Indiana University puts some comedic musicianship to work on this Christmas round. We know you'll like it, sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus from the Serengeti. “Nut Rocker” by Emerson, Lake & PalmerELP puts a prog rock spin on the classic Nutcracker Suite. Russian composer Tchaikovsky wrote the original Nutcracker as a two-act ballet in 1892, and is a fantasy taking place at the foot of a Christmas tree.“Christmas All Over Again” by Tom Petty and the HeartbreakersThis original song was penned by Tom Petty on a ukulele in 1992. It was used in the motion picture "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York," and also appeared in "Jingle All the Way." Jeff Lynne co-produced the song, played bells, bass, timpani, sang background vocals, and wishes for a Chuck Berry Songbook in the song.“The Christmas Song” by WeezerThis is not the one you're familiar with. The more famous "The Christmas Song" was first performed by the Nat King Cole trio in 1946. Weezer did this introspective original song with the same name in 2000 on a fan club Christmas LP.“Minnie and Santa” by Cyndi LauperLauper released this light hearted Christmas song in 1998 which tells of a fling that Minnie (not the mouse!) had with old Kris Kringle. This may sound like a cover of a classic song, but it is an original written by Lauper and Jan Pulsford.“Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” by Frank SinatraYou can't go wrong with Old Blue Eyes and a crooner Christmas classic. This song originated in 1943 and was in the musical "Meet Me in St. Louis," where it was sung by Judy Garland.“God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen/We Three Kings” by Barenaked LadiesThis Christmas medley also features fellow Canadian singer-songwriter Sara McLachlan joining in with the Barenaked Ladies.“Listen, The Snow is Falling” by Yoko Ono & the Plastic Ono BandHear us out - this is an Ono piece that is actually quite good! It was released in 1971 as the B-side to the better known "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)," sung by John Lennon.“If It Doesn't Snow On Christmas” by Joe PesciChasing Macaulay Culkin isn't the only association Pesci has with Christmas. He put this cover of an old Gene Autry song out on his 1998 album "Vincent LaGuardia Gambini Sings Just for You."(and there might be a bonus ending related to the Beatles...)We at What the Riff?!? wish every one a blessed and Merry Christmas! The Bros. Landreth return to Hidden Track for a Season 5 Session! When they started their band, it was just an excuse to spend time together, given that the brothers David and Joey Landreth were often embroiled in their careers as top–call players in the Winnipeg music scene. The brothers came together to write some original songs and their first album as The Bros. Landreth was born. Released independently without much fanfare, Let It Lie soon drew them an audience from across the world. It's somewhat ironic that the album is titled “Let It Lie”, as it did anything but lay down - especially where the Bro's musical careers are concerned! Ten years on, this beautiful album continues to resonate and do astonishing things in the world. For instance – it would have seemed impossible for David and Joey to believe in 2013 that a decade later, they could say that a song on this album has been recorded by one of their all-time heroes, Bonnie Raitt – and that it won a Grammy Award! It says a lot about the work ethic of the Bros. Landreth that their way of celebrating the debut record's 10th anniversary was no mere victory lap. Instead, they created a whole new version of the album – featuring acoustic re-interpretations of all the songs on Let It Lie – and took it on the road for a gigantic tour. It was during that tour that the band found themselves with a couple days off in Alberta! Between their sold-out concerts, the Bros. Landreth elected to play a free Saturday covers set at a local pub and took a trip down to CKUA's Edmonton Performance Space for this beautiful Hidden Track Session. Something of an intergenerational affair, this Session features David Landreth on bass (and some harmonica). Then, on acoustic guitars, we have: Joey Landreth, long-time collaborator Murray Pulver, (from hitmaking Winnipeg bands like Crash Test Dummies and Doc Walker); and the band's drummer, Roman Clarke, a great young multi-instrumentalist, who like everyone else in this session, is an absolute monster singer and musician – as well as a kind-hearted, down-to-earth, sincere, and hilarious human being. This episode is a candid visit with the Bros. Landreth – in conversation, plus live performances of three songs from Let It Lie: "Nothing", "Where Were We", and that Grammy-winning song of theirs, "Made Up Mind". Host: Grant Stovel | Producer: Scott Zielsdorf | Graphics: Craig Taffs | Music: Doug Hoyer Session recording: Scott Zielsdorf | Mixing: Duke Paetz | Video Editor: Jasmine Vickaryous. Man this week's episode was ROUGH. Zach's computer stopped recording like five times so we restarted the episode once and then had to restart multiple segments over again. This was by far i think the hardest episode to edit, but I somehow managed to Frankenstein the pieces together into an actual coherent episode even though in the process we lost Zach to a tragic plane accident.....
