This episode of the CFO Playbook features an interview with Bill Fahrbach, Chief Financial Officer at Facet, offering impartial and invaluable financial advice and services at an affordable membership fee.Bill is a strategic Financial Executive and Entrepreneurial CFO/COO with an extensive investment banking background and rounded technology operational experience. With a track record of significant growth, capital raises, and exits, he's a leader in finance, operations, systems, and legal capacities. In this episode, Bill talks about the changing dynamics between CFO and CEO, the importance of a healthy work-life balance, and how a primarily remote-first culture affects the pathway to becoming a CFO.--------Guest Quotes:“I think what has changed is, if you think about the CFO role, it's really critically important that you get the right information out to the organization. So, the organization wants to understand how we are doing as a business, and it's not as simple as sort of just saying like, look, here are the numbers, right? There's a lot of color, there's a lot of context. So I would say as CFO, it's been challenging. It's actually pushed probably the limits in terms of like how do you communicate effectively with the employee base, whereas when you're in the office in a physical office, it's more natural, I guess you could say, and more seamless to sort of be having routine discussions with, employees across the board and articulating, you know, the good, the bad, and everything in between and getting that message across. In a virtual environment, what I've found is that the struggle is always finding that balance of how do I get the right message out in the right forums. And not create, let's say, like a drain of unnecessary meetings that people get bored in, right? So, it's finding that balance, you know, articulating the right information, but also giving the right context in a way that employees will be engaged. I'd say that was, that's been the biggest challenge.” - Bill Fahrbach--------Topics:00:38 Bill's role and adjusting to remote work03:49 How a remote first culture affects the pathway to CFO07:51 Educational background13:19 Dynamics between CFO and CEO17:53 Facilitating company acquisitions21:47 Work life balance24:23 About Facet and IPO29:18 Best decision he's ever made--------Sponsor:This show is brought to you by Soldo, the brighter way to manage business spending and expenses. Why settle for aiming to be a millionaire if you could just go for it and set your goal to be a billionaire? In this episode of the Disruptive Entrepreneur Podcast, Rob chats with Martin Fridson, a CFA and the author of “How To Be A Billionaire.” Martin's book has been one of the top non-fiction bestsellers and has helped many people on reaching – not just getting near – their goals. Discover today how a billionaire's mindset and personality differ from a millionaire. It's true also that along the way, there will always be challenges, detours, and people who would definitely put your guard down. Learn how the classic and modern billionaires dealt with these so you'll have the basis on how to face such and stay focused on becoming a billionaire. Aside from these, Rob and Martin also talk about Martin's career and his book. When you walk the road to being a billionaire, do you wish to be greedy and capitalistic? Or do you want to be generous and philanthropic? Listen in, so you know how to balance your life, how to give back, and how to live your billionaire life to the fullest. KEY TAKEAWAYS What does a billionaire know that a millionaire doesn't yet know? "Really understanding that it is possible to achieve, that's the most significant difference." You have to be extremely focused if you want to be a billionaire. "What comes first is the focus in business building and enterprise." Greedy and capitalist vs generous and philanthropic. Many billionaires had some issue with their dealings in their business, but once they have turned to philanthropy, they put their eyes on socially-relevant projects. For example, John D Rockefeller helped in a significant project of eradicating the hookworm disease. Three things you need to ready yourself with when you want to become a billionaire: Scale, Timing, and the ability to take rejection. Scale: Deciding on whether to make it to a national or international scale is very essential. To get into a billionaire status, you have to reach certain boundaries. Timing: The rapid growth right now is your cue to start moving to become a billionaire. Know the trends, so you know when's the right time to scale up or introduce new products & services. The personality of a billionaire: You have to have a thick skin to succeed. The downsides and upsides observed by Martin on starting billionaires: Example of a downside: People they interact with may think that they got the shorter end of a deal. Most of the time, this sparks the altercation between the parties – i.e. the individual getting sued. Upsides: Billionaires give essential contributions to the community. For example, in the restaurant industry, companies are starting to listen to the consumer demand of being provided with healthy options. A lot of companies also are at the forefront of the revolution in technology. BEST MOMENTS "There's this line of huge vision and craziness." “There are unquestionably dislocations when innovation comes along, when there's disruption, ultimately winds up better. it's important not to be cavalier about this to understand the effects of that dislocation towards solutions for those that wind up on the wrong end." "You have to have the incentive of profit to take the risk and do all the work, do all the regulation, construction and competition... and that's the reward." “I think that in many cases, they[billionaires] really feel that it's important for everyone to have the opportunity they have. They appreciate what capitalism has made possible for them. They know that without the education they received, they wouldn't have been able to exploit those opportunities. I think they feel a great sense of injustice that we haven't reached the stage where everyone has the educational opportunity.” VALUABLE RESOURCES How to be a Billionaire: Proven Strategies from the Titans of Wealth by Martin Fridson The Money Podcast with Rob Moore |iTunes |Stitcher|Omny ABOUT THE GUEST Martin Fridson is a Certified Financial Adviser, a financial writer and the author of “How To Be A Billionaire”. Prior to founding Whitecap Resources Inc in 2008, Fagerheim was President and Chief Executive Officer and a Director of Cadence Energy Inc, a public oil and gas company. He says "if the people of Canada think for one moment that we can only have Canadian investors and hope to drive any type of business going forward, they are absolutely, massively mistaken." In his fiscal update federal Minister of Finance Bill Morneau has committed roughly $600 million in tax credits and incentives over five years for Canadian media organizations facing significant financial challenges. Is this move protecting media availability or is it an attempt to buy favourable coverage for Justin Trudeau's government heading toward the federal election? Roy has assembled a panel of media and political experts to debate and discuss the pros and the cons. Back-to-Work legislation passed the house of commons early this morning. Today the Senate will debate it before ratifying, and the Labour and the NDP are adamantly opposed. How much damage will this do to Truduea's relationship with unions? The clerk Craig James and Sargent-at-Arms Gary Lenz were arrested and perp-walked out of the B.C. Legislature. They are now the subjects of an RCMP investigation. What do we know about this strange turn of events, and what lies ahead for these two?              British Columbia's homicide rate was up 32 per cent according to StatsCan, making it the province's highest rate since 2009. B.C.'s highest numbers were in Metro Vancouver, with 52 homicide victims in 2017.  Curtis Robinson is now the Chair of Barwatch in Vancouver, the self-regulated association of bars, nightclubs and restaurants which have been pushing back against the gang members who previously frequented their establishments. Sheri Arsenault who attended the parole hearing for the individual who killed her son Bradley and Bradley's two friends while driving drunk and at over 200kmh has questions about the parole process and will ask our guest those questions. Scott Newark, former Alberta Crown Attorney, answers these questions. Guests: Grant Fagerheim.  President/CEO Whitecap Resources Inc. Learning the process of starting a business is incredibly important for entrepreneurs. While most people think that it's sheer luck and randomness, the successful business owners learn from those who have already done it. In this interview, Dr. Lewis Kilbourne, CFO of 5 different publicly traded companies, shares his origin story of becoming a financial executive officer. Dr. Kilbourne went to college out of high school and flunked out. He didn't know what to do so he went into the military. His time in the military taught him discipline and important skills that have helped him to be the businessman he is. But it also helped motivate him to be in a position to never have to jump out of planes or be shot at ever again. When he came out, he was ready to go back to school and because he was a veteran he was accepted again. An administrator and family friend told him he had to get all A's and B's so he never got a B. From there, he continued in school and went on to get his PhD. He was then able to become an executive in several major business across the United States. From there, he was bit by the entrepreneurial spirit. He wanted to create something. He found the best investors he could find and hired the best people to be on his team. They have worked together to great things. Right after he sold his company, he had a massive heart attack and this caused him to evaluate life and walk away from some of the stress. Even though he was very successful, the time away from home cost him so much and we have to consider the cost when we spend so much time away from family to create a business. By focusing on acts of service and helping others, we can all achieve our dreams through whichever vehicle we decide to pursue them through.
